Pasadena Roof Orchestra

Dublin Guitar Quartet

Feb. 24, 2018

March 9, 2018

Swing is in. Top DJs are stocking up on old vinyl copies of the great big bands, trendsetting clubs are vying to outdo each other with their swing and electro-swing nights, and Pasadena Roof Orchestra (PRO) is the band responsible for starting the revival. The 11-piece orchestra — with its authentic 1920s and ’30s aura, technically brilliant delivery, rousing atmosphere and light-hearted musical style — has been grooving for more than 45 years, first bursting onto the scene after discovering over 1,000 swing-era arrangements in their founder’s attic. The PRO has since earned a reputation for transporting what some might consider “antiquated” music into modernity in a fashion both fascinating and authentic. This thrilling concert experience is sure to keep you swinging for years to come!

Described as a “quartet with a difference” by the Irish Times, the Dublin Guitar Quartet (DGQ) is the first classical guitar ensemble entirely devoted to new music. Since its formation at the Dublin Conservatory of Music and Drama, DGQ has worked to expand the limited repertoire by commissioning new works and adapting modern masterpieces intended for instruments other than guitar, bringing attention to some of the world’s leading composers. With a keen sensitivity to the musical and emotional demands of each composition, these artists incorporate ingenious textures that transform the standard guitar sound, arousing audiences with rhythms and harmonies that buzz, clunk and ring like gongs. Aquila Theatre Company’s Sense and Sensibility March 8, 2018 With precision, sensitivity and high voltage energy, Aquila Theatre Company articulates the human essence inherent in classical drama and expands the canon of classical works for the stage. At the hand of artistic director Desiree Sanchez, this production incorporates an innovative use of space, movement, design and sound, combining the techniques of British and American theater to present a bold and exciting adaptation of one of Jane Austen’s most popular novels, Sense and Sensibility. Living in a world in which choices are limited, especially for women, this story poignantly and cleverly illustrates the effects of economic uncertainty brought about by rules of inheritance. Ravé Mehta’s FLOW May 24, 2018 Enter a world where music, yoga, art, mindfulness and dance all converge into one awe-inspiring, soul-healing experience. FLOW is a live piano concert by award-winning composer, producer and pianist Ravé Mehta, choreographed by lululemon ambassador and yoga dancer Kristen Schneider and accompanied by the awe-inspiring vocals of award-winning singer Radha Mehta. Infused with yogainspired artistry, such as piano yoga, yoga dance, acro-yoga, aerial yoga and more, FLOW will take you on a musical journey filled with grace, beauty, elegance, creativity and love. Partly choreographed and partly improvised, this show is an original experience that will allow you to be fully in the moment, free and open to whatever may come. Show Sponsor

Charlie Daniels Band May 10, 2018 Few artists have left a more indelible mark on America’s musical landscape than Charlie Daniels. Since forming the Charlie Daniels Band in 1972, this fiddlin’ man has received numerous accolades, including induction into the Grand Ole Opry, the Musicians Hall of Fame and, in 2016, the Country Music Hall of Fame. Over his career, Daniels has populated the radio with such memorable hits as “Long Haired Country Boy,” “The South’s Gonna Do It Again,” “In America” and of course, his signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” Now, this country music icon takes the Walton Arts Center stage for the first time ever to prove that, even at 80 years old, he’s still got it!

The trio has been touring nationally to sold-out clubs and theaters in support of their best-selling book, Liberal Redneck Manifesto: Draggin Dixie Outta the Dark. This year’s tour, From Dixie With Love, is about celebrating everything great about the South and telling stories from a place of love. It’s about dancing to country music at a gay wedding. It’s about loving your neighbor whether you have the same religion, skin color or sexual preference. It’s about leaving behind bigotry, but remembering the fried okra.

Diana Krall June 28, 2018 Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards and eight Juno® Awards, and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum certifications. Krall and her familiar band of Anthony Wilson (guitar), Karriem Riggins (drums), Robert Hurst (bass), and Stuart Duncan (fiddle) have been entertaining audiences with material from Krall’s latest album, Turn Up The Quiet, during the most recent North American tour. Earning critical praise, MOJO Magazine called the new album “spectacular” and said Krall was in “top form.” People Magazine said, “Diana Krall’s new music will have fans falling for her all over again.”

Feb. 27, 2018

April 6, 2018

Since its successful three-year run on Broadway, Swiss-based experimental mime troupe Mummenschanz has pioneered a new form of visual theater using shadow, light and creative manipulation of objects, resulting in a stunning spectacle that transcends cultural barriers and sparks the imagination. Making their Walton Arts Center debut, these “musicians of silence” bring their surreal, signature large-scale masks to life and revive an historic tradition of acrobatics, with each scene set to only the soundtrack of the awe, joy and laughter of the audience. Celebrating its 45th anniversary, this revolutionary group returns to the U.S. to present a show full of originality, exceptional ingenuity, surprises and deft satirical touches.

Original. Imaginative. Ridiculous. What began quite literally as a street corner barbershop act has now evolved into an internationally acclaimed touring sensation. Seen nationwide on Season 4 of NBC’s “The Sing-Off,” VoicePlay is unlike any other theatrical experience, recreating the orchestrated sound of an entire musical production with nothing but the human voice. Amazing, humorous, vertigo-inducing harmonies pepper this vocal band’s signature sound as they ping-pong between eras and styles, lacing their shows with inventive and often hilarious onstage theatrics. A show fit for all ages, VoicePlay stops in Northwest Arkansas to headline the 2018 VoiceJam A Cappella Festival with a sound you have to hear to believe.

Martin Sexton April 4, 2018 Raul Midón

Peter Yarrow

Martin Sexton

Raul Midón March 1, 2018 Raul Midón is a distinctive and searching artist, characterized by a silky tenor voice and a syncopated, flamenco and jazz-infused guitar style. Bass, harmony and melodic lines fly from the fretboard in a way that belies the fact that all the music is produced by just two hands. In his own words, the musician, blind since birth, describes it best. His music is “for those who are interested in going beyond notions of genre – it’s for listeners with open ears, open minds, open hearts.”

Syracuse native Martin Sexton got his start singing in the streets and subways of Boston in the early ‘90s. Still fiercely independent and headlining venues from The Fillmore to Carnegie Hall, he has influenced a generation of contemporary artists. His songs have appeared in television series such as Scrubs, Parenthood, Masters of Sex and in numerous films, though it’s his incendiary live show, honest lyrics and vocal prowess that keep fans coming back for more.

LearningThroughtheArts Northwest Arkansas has an abundance of world-class arts. But who gets to participate? Why does it matter? These questions are at the core of Walton Arts Center’s advocacy for students. School boards, superintendents, curriculum leaders, principals, teachers and parents are the gatekeepers to arts field trip participation – unless they value the benefits of participation, too many students get left behind. When students learn through the arts they develop the critical thinking, collaborative and creative skills necessary to succeed. When students explore their community’s cultural amenities — including Walton Arts Center — they build cultural capital to help them reach the dreams of adulthood.

Proud Sponsors of

Walton Arts Center envisions a community where every child participates in high quality arts experiences, both in school and in the community. It will take all of us working together to realize this vision of a well-rounded education that every child in Northwest Arkansas, no matter where they go to school, deserves.

Symphony of Northwest Arkansas Season Packed with Variety and Exciting Special Guests

Paul Haas

For more than six decades, the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas has carried out its mission of bringing great music to life. Made up of the region’s finest professional musicians, SoNA has been delighting symphonic music lovers year after year with classical and pops performances, special concerts and innovative programming.

Established in 1954 as the North Arkansas Symphony, the group changed its name to the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas in 2011. Maestro Paul Haas also joined the symphony as music director at that time, and today SoNA is reaching thousands each year and selling out performances one stellar season after the next. SoNA seems to have found the perfect formula for solidifying its golden standing: delivering consistency through distinctive programming, world-renowned guest soloists and classic masterpieces, while keeping the audience on its toes – like when Haas decides to throw fun surprises in to various concert programs. As a resident company of Walton Arts Center, SoNA’s mainstage concerts are primarily performed at WAC, but in recent years it has also infused itself into the community by performing at venues and events throughout the region, such as the Bentonville Film Festival or Fayetteville Roots Festival, and at the Walmart AMP or Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. “Collaboration has been vital to our success,” SoNA Executive Director Matthew Herren says, adding that the orchestra is expanding its reach now more than ever through community partnerships. “The future of Northwest Arkansas is bright, and classical music will certainly continue to be a part of the landscape.”

Walton Arts Center OnStage Spring/Summer 2018

The 2017-18 Season Continues Having already lit up the WAC stage earlier in the season with a rousing performance of Tchaikovsky’s romantic 5th symphony last fall, followed by the annual Christmas Pops spectacular and the family Snowman concert in December, and some brilliant Mozart and Mendelssohn to kick off the new year – SoNA musicians are now set to continue the season with an exciting lineup featuring guest singers and the swinging sounds of a big band. On March 10, get ready for an evening of iconic Hollywood film music as SoNA teams up with the incomparable Fayetteville Jazz Collective. With selections from Singin’ in the Rain, April in Paris, James Bond, The Pink Panther, Raiders of the Lost Ark and more, this concert features scores from some of the biggest blockbusters in cinema to date!

Danielle Talamantes

And, to finish the season on a high note on May 5, SoNA welcomes an internationally travelled cast of singers for Masterworks III: La Bohème, featuring Puccini’s Act I of La Bohème and Strauss’ epic Also sprach Zarathustra.

TheatreSquared’s Season 12 Continues with a Bang Six-Play Season Features Regional and World Premieres “Unmissable,” says Robert Ford, artistic director of TheatreSquared (T2). “That’s the best word we can use to describe the 2017/18 six-play season.”

to drinks and perhaps a bit too much honesty. Performances of this existential, funny, scathing and smartly written new comic drama are set for Jan. 24 – Feb. 18, 2018.

“We secured the rights to both the 2015 Tony Award® Winner for Best Musical and the 2016 Tony Award® for Best Play, immediately after their Broadway runs. We [launched] the world premiere of a gripping new play based on untold events in the life of Nina Simone. We’ll bring home an Arkansas playwright’s acclaimed new play — told partly in rap, with comic verve — of how his parents first met as refugees in south Arkansas. And [we’re reimagining] two classics with abundant theatrical invention.”

In March, the season continues with Vietgone, by Arkansas native Qui Nguyen. A modern twist on the all-American love story, this recent off-Broadway hit is a classic boy-meets-girl tale – except this boy and girl are refugees from the Vietnam War newly settled in a relocation camp in Fort Chaffee, Ark. Fresh from its acclaimed 2017 New York debut, Vietgone presents a fresh theatrical take on one Arkansas family’s unique history. Directed by T2 artist in residence Kholoud Sawaf, performances are slated for March 14 – April 8.

T2’s Season 12 officially launched this past August with 20 performances of the 2015 Tony Award®-winning Best Musical, Fun Home; and in October, the company staged the world premiere of The Champion, inspired by the life of R&B legend Nina Simone. And for the holiday season, T2 offered an inventive twist on Frank Capra’s classic film with It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play. “Season 12 has already been a record-setter for T2 – we’ve had more sold-out shows in the first half of the [season] than in our past two seasons combined,” says Executive Director Martin Miller. “It’s clear there’s a lot of excitement in Northwest Arkansas for great theater, and the word’s getting out.” In the new year, TheatreSquared presents The Humans, by Stephen Karam, winner of the 2016 Tony Award® for Best Play. As darkness falls, a Pennsylvania family’s holiday dinner transitions 38

Walton Arts Center OnStage Spring/Summer 2018

In the final mainstage production of the season, T2 presents The Hound of the Baskervilles, as freely adapted by Steven Canny and John Nicholson and directed by Mark Shanahan. Packed with verbal and visual ingenuity, this sublimely funny reimagining of the most celebrated Sherlock Holmes mystery is a hypertheatrical tour de force. Performances are April 25 – May 20. And, in June, TheatreSquared celebrates the best of what’s next with the 2018 Arkansas New Play Festival. Arkansas’ flagship celebration of new plays, the festival will feature two weekends of performances at T2 and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, paired with local craft beers and a host of exclusive behindthe-scenes events from June 8-17. All T2 mainstage performances take place in Walton Arts Center’s intimate 175-seat Nadine Baum Studio Theater.

Community Creative Center Celebrating 10 Years of Hands-on Studio Arts in NWA This is a very special year at Community Creative Center. The nonprofit arts organization will be celebrating 10 years of offering art classes and workshops from its home in Walton Arts Center’s Nadine Baum Studios. Pottery, painting, drawing and mixedmedia art classes and workshops for people of all ages and skill levels are the main focus of CCC, along with an extensive arts education program serving NWA schools.

The 10th Anniversary celebration will culminate with an exciting new offering that also marks the beginning of CCC’s newest arts endeavor – the launch of the new Wheel Mobile, a mobile art studio. The custom-designed Winnebago will travel to schools, farmers markets, youth centers and other NWA locations, and will offer the same types of art classes and workshops currently available in the Nadine Baum Studios. “We are thrilled to be working on this exciting new project,” says Putman. “As far as we know, there is no other traveling art studio like the Wheel Mobile anywhere!” Arts accessibility for all has always been central to CCC’s mission, and this new project will allow the organization to reach many more students and community members.

A special anniversary celebration will take place in April and include $10 workshops for kids and adults plus a 10th Anniversary handcrafted pottery sale featuring work by the Center’s teaching artists and staff. “What greater way to thank our friends and family for their support over the years than with the opportunity to enjoy and create more hands-on art,” says Barb Putman, CCC’s executive director.

“For years at CCC,” Putman adds, “we’ve been encouraging people to imagine more. Now, with the Wheel Mobile, we’ve taken our own advice and have imagined a way to bring the arts directly to people where they live, learn, work and play.”

CCC’s regular class schedule will also be available during the spring session for both youth and adults. Along with the multi-week potter’s wheel, figure drawing and painting classes, the Center also offers an array of one-time workshops designed to appeal to a variety of students and interests. Ghost Date Night at CCC invites couples to try out the pottery wheel, calling to mind Patrick and Demi from the movie Ghost. “The point is to be together with your sweetheart and try something new…and the arts are a perfect vehicle to do this,” explains Ashley Byers, the Center’s education program manager. Arts education programming will be front and center this spring as well. The Center will serve more than 1,000 students through oncampus, afterschool and art-integration programs. Stage to Studio gives pupils the opportunity to watch a live performance at Walton Arts Center, then continue the experience across the street at CCC with a hands-on art workshop exploring themes introduced by the performance. And, Curious Minds sends CCC teaching artists out to the students for a four-day afterschool art residency. Both programs serve low-income schools in Northwest Arkansas.

It’s All About the Drama with Trike Theatre for Youth Kids grow up quickly, as the saying goes, and the same can be said for Trike Theatre, which started in a small downtown storefront in 2008. Today, Trike Theatre, Northwest Arkansas’ Professional Theatre for Youth, has programming year-round and is not only reaching young actors, but their parents, teachers and younger siblings, too. Over the years, the nonprofit moved from location to location before establishing its current home on the Bentonville Square. But empowering youth to forge deep connections with themselves, their community and the world by seeing, participating in and learning through theater has been the focus for Trike Theatre since day one. “Our focus has stayed true even though we’ve branched out and done a million other things,” says Jason Suel, Trike’s head of outreach. After earning her graduate degree, Trike Theater founder and artistic director Kassie Misiewicz worked in professional theaters for youth in Milwaukee and Seattle. When she and her family moved to Northwest Arkansas, she believed it was the perfect place to create such a program – and her colleagues at Walton Arts Center agreed. “Trike Theatre’s partnership with Walton Arts Center has been truly symbiotic,” says Misiewicz. “When we were first starting in 2008, even before we had our nonprofit status, I met with Laura Goodwin at WAC to dream of possible education and artistic collaborations. Our shared artistic aesthetic and deep love and respect for young audiences led us to co-create Digging Up Arkansas and Bear State of Mind – two plays that challenged both companies to develop original Arkansas-based stories and refine the way we engage the audience.” Since 2009, Digging Up Arkansas has been performed in all 75 of Arkansas’ counties and has reached more than 30,000 third through fifth graders. This year, Trike Theatre is projected to 42

serve 40,000 people in and out of the Northwest Arkansas community through all of its programming. In addition to offering Theatre Academy classes and camps yearround, the Youth Theatre program gives actors ages 8-16 the chance to audition and perform in several fullscale productions. The 2017/18 Season lineup includes Charlotte’s Web and Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse, both performed in Walton Arts Center’s Starr Theater. For its youngest audiences, Trike Theatre also offers its Little Trikes Series – professional, engaging theater experiences for children ages 2-5 and their families. Trike Theatre’s reach goes well beyond Northwest Arkansas. As national art integration consultants, Suel and Misiewicz impact teachers and students across the country. In NWA, Trike’s artseducation outreach includes the SmART Residency Program, a partnership with Walton Arts Center supporting students at Sonora and Bayyari elementary schools. Through this program, Trike’s teaching artists provide curriculum-linked workshops, pre-performance and post-performance workshops and professional development. “We’re not only just about reaching the kids, we’re about reaching their parents and the teachers, and educating about what the arts can do,” Suel says. He also echoes Misiewicz in pointing out that the organization would not be where it is today were it not for Walton Arts Center. “They support us; they believe in what we do.” Now in its sixth season as an affiliate company of Walton Arts Center, and with the recent WAC expansion complete, Trike is now able to bring more theatre experiences and educational opportunities to the Fayetteville community — including classes and shows right here at WAC — providing even more artistic opportunities for young people and families in Northwest Arkansas.
