The City of Fayetteville, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, partnered with Walton Arts Center to install a life-scale topographic map on School Avenue by eco-artist Stacy Levy. Projects like this thermoplastic topo map is one of the ways Walton Arts Center participates as a centerpiece in Fayetteville’s emerging cultural corridor.
Last season, volunteers at Walton Arts Center helped more than 23,600 students and educators as they attended a Colgate Classroom Series performance. In total, these volunteers worked nearly 500 shows last season. For any one performance in Baum Walker Hall it takes at least 39 volunteers to make theater magic happen! You can become a Walton Arts Center volunteer today, just visit waltonartscenter.org/edu/volunteer.
Walton Arts Center’s Box Office processed more than 275,000 tickets, sent 70,000 pieces of mail and answered more than 82,000 phone calls from July 2017 to July 2018. You can contact our box office at 479.443.5600 or tickets@waltonartscenter.org. 4

23 Tips for Audience Members Different performances bring different audience and artist expectations. Monitors in the lobby and curtain speakers will share specific restrictions, but here are some general tips to help you and your fellow audience members enjoy the show. What do I need to know? Be aware of the kind of show you are attending – a classical music performance, for example, is different from a rock or comedy show, and the etiquette norms may differ. Need help? Ask an usher or staff member for advice and check lobby monitors. We welcome children to most shows and know their behavior can sometimes be unpredictable. If your child/ children are disruptive to other patrons, we may ask that you move to the lobby until they are ready to return to the quiet environment of the theater. Parents can
enjoy the performance on the monitors in the lobby while outside the theater. Picture taking is generally not allowed, unless the curtain speaker or artist has indicated otherwise – and please set your phone to “silent” mode and do not text during the show. When concessions are allowed in the theater, please enjoy them quietly and with respect for the performer(s) and your fellow audience members. Don’t forget! Bring back your Walton Arts Center cups to future performances for reduced price refills.
Hearing and vision enhancement devices are available, free of charge, on a first-come, firstserved basis. Please let a House Manager or usher know if we can help you with any of the devices. We can make your experience better! If something is bothering you, please find an usher or House Manager for assistance. The carrying of weapons and/or firearms is prohibited at Walton Arts Center under Arkansas Code 5-73-306 even if you have a permit. Walton Arts Center is a tobacco-free facility.

Michael Andrew with Fayetteville Jazz Collective: Sinatra and the American Songbook Feb. 23, 2019 Michael Andrew has many credits to his name. He was the headline singer and band-leader at the world famous Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center in New York City. He also performed that coveted role at Merv Griffin’s “Coconut Club” across the country in Beverly Hills, CA. While on “Larry King Live,” Merv called Michael Andrew “one of the great singers of all time.” This show, developed specifically for our 10x10 audience and featuring the Fayetteville Jazz Collective, pays tribute to the writers of the “American Songbook,” including Johnny Mercer, Sammy Cahn, the Gershwins and Frank Sinatra. Celebrate some of history’s most iconic composers and singers led by “one of the best talents to come down the pike in 50 years” (Jerry Lewis). Show Sponsor

6-WIRE Aquila Theatre Company’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream Mar. 16, 2019 One of Shakespeare’s most beloved and witty comedies is brought to vivid life in an innovative new production by the critically acclaimed Aquila Theatre Company. At the center of the story is the Fairy King’s servant, the impish Puck, whose magic creates an endless supply of mirth, mistaken identity and inappropriate, if not absolutely ludicrous passions. Exploring the universal theme of love (and its attendant complications: passion, lust, frustration, depression, confusion and marriage), this classically trained, modernly hip troupe brings the classics into present day with a signature style full of beautiful movement, music, song and some of the finest Shakespearean acting today. Boz Scaggs: Out of The Blues Tour 2019
March 31, 2019
It’s appropriate that Boz Scaggs’ new album is Out of the Blues, since the blues is what first sparked his musical career. Growing up in Oklahoma and Texas, Scaggs spent his teenage years immersed in the blues, R&B and early rock ‘n’ roll. In 1967, Scaggs joined the Steve Miller Band in San Francisco, performing on their albums Children of the Future and Sailor before launching his solo career, which garnered him massive commercial success. With chart-topping singles, Grammy®-winning songs and a fiercely loyal audience, Scaggs has spent five decades refining his approach. Now, he returns to Northwest Arkansas with a finely developed stylistic mastery, playing audience favorite songs and new tunes that demonstrate now, more than ever, Boz Scaggs has found his voice.
The Monterey Jazz Festival is the longest continuously-running jazz festival in the world, renowned for its artistic excellence, sophisticated informality and longstanding mission to create and support yearround jazz education and performances. Now on its fifth national tour, the 2019 Monterey Jazz Festival features some of the greatest critically-acclaimed jazz artists of the next generation, including Cécile McLorin Salvant, vocals; Bria Skonberg, trumpet, vocals; Melissa Aldana, tenor saxophone; Christian Sands, piano, musical director; Jamison Ross, drums, vocals; and Yasushi Nakamura, bass. Featuring renditions of classic jazz standards alongside originals penned by the members, this performance will inspire! Photos: 1. Bria Skonberg 2. Cécile McLorin Salvant 3. Christian Sands 4. On her final tour after six decades of recording, performing and sharing music with audiences around the world, Joan Baez remains a musical force of nature and an artist of incalculable influence. At a point when it was neither safe nor fashionable, Joan sang about freedom and Civil Rights. The soundtrack for the tumultuous ’60s is heard on Joan’s remarkably timeless Vanguard LPs, and she has since been recognized for those landmark albums and their contribution to the Civil Rights movement – she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2007 Grammys, the Ambassador of Conscience Award in 2015 in recognition of her leadership in the fight for human rights, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. Flying umbrellas, larger-than-life balloons, giant kites that float over the audience, and the biggest snow globe you’ve ever seen will make you gasp in wonder and laugh until it hurts. Combining contemporary circus with street performance art and sculpture, this poetic ode to childhood will electrify the young and the young at heart. Ages 5+

Storytelling, choreographed projections and live drawn animation explore the plight of refugees fleeing environmental change through the eyes of a child. Dorrance Dance is an award-winning tap dance company based out of New York City. The company’s work aims to honor the genre’s uniquely beautiful history in a new, dynamic and compelling context; not by stripping the form of its tradition, but by pushing it – rhythmically, technically and conceptually. The company’s inaugural performance garnered a Bessie Award for “blasting open our notions of tap,” and the company continues its passionate commitment to expanding the audience of tap dance, America’s original art form.

One Night of Queen March 14, 2019 In 2000, Gary Mullen won the Grand Final of the hit U.K. TV show “Stars In Their Eyes,” winning the largest number of votes ever received in the show’s history. His performance was a tribute to Freddie Mercury, the consummate front man of the famed rock band Queen – an undeniably magnetic and unpredictable performer. With huge public demand following his win, Mullen and his band “The Works” created One Night of Queen – a fully live, amazingly accurate tribute concert that recreates the look, sound, pomp and showmanship of one of the greatest rock bands of all time. With fantastic staging, lighting and effects, this show will rock you! Support provided by Cece Box

Over the past decade, pianist Alfredo Rodríguez went from a young local Cuban artist, to being discovered by Quincy Jones, to becoming a globally recognized Grammy® nominee with three critically acclaimed albums to his name. Also helping to expose the rich musical history of Cuba to a wider audience, Pedrito Martinez has recorded or performed with Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen and Sting, among others. As a founding member of the highly successful Afro-Cuban/Afro-Beat band Yerba Buena, Pedrito was named “Percussionist of the Year” by the Jazz Journalists Association three years in a row. Together, these two artists are leading the new wave of Cuban jazz music – with a seductive, buoyant, powerful sound that will leave you wanting more.
Guitarist Peter Bernstein, organist Larry Goldings and drummer Bill Stewart make up one of the best organ jazz trios of the past two decades. Jazz enthusiasts recognize them for charting new ground with hard-swinging, yet thoughtful music. Drawing mainly on jazz standards, and a few original pieces, they re-imagine the organ jazz trio in a quiet, sensual and grooving presentation. The respect these musicians have for one another comes through in the subtle and intricate manner of their musical conversation on stage. Peter’s warm, feather-light touch and fluid improvisation with Larry Goldings’ warm hum, and Bill Stewart’s polyrhythmic and melodic focus create a vivid combination of synergistic playing that lets each soloist float across the tunes.
Benny Green holds the history of jazz at his fingertips. With decades of experience playing with the most celebrated artists of the last half century, it’s no wonder Green has been hailed as perhaps the most exciting hard-swinging, hard-bop pianist of his time. At age 24, Veronica Swift is recognized around the country as one of the top young jazz singers on the scene. An adept lyrical interpreter with tremendous tonal command, Swift has the keen ability to make everything she touches her own. Join us for a hot performance that combines the sophisticated know-how of an established jazz master, the complex sounds of his inventive band-mates and the riffs and scats of tomorrow’s jazz royalty.

For two decades, Gretchen Peters has been one of Nashville’s most beloved and respected artists. Sexy and sublime, angelically clean and devilishly dirty, blemished yet beautiful, Peters rose to the top of her craft by writing and recording songs that explore the deep corners of life with empathy and integrity. Inducted into the Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2014 and named one of the best 60 female singer-songwriters of all time by The Telegraph, Peters has undoubtedly earned herself a spot among the country’s upper echelon of contemporary composers and among her generation’s most compelling singer/songwriters.
Since being named “Songwriter of the Year” by iTunes in 2008, Royal Wood has become established as one of Canada’s most accomplished alt-pop singer/ songwriters, producers, arrangers and multi-instrumentalists. On tour for his newest album Ever After The Farewell—an ode to the classic styles of both Tin Pan Alley and Laurel Canyon—the songsmith brings class and craft to his pop-rock stylings, delivering them with a rich and resonant voice. From beautiful melodies, to perfect harmonies, to soulful vocals, this two-time Juno-nominated musician has charmed audiences across the globe. Don’t miss his debut in Northwest Arkansas!
A virtuoso multi-instrumentalist and awardwinning songwriter with a distinctive voice, Molly Tuttle has turned the heads of even the most seasoned industry professionals. Since recording her first album at the age of 13, Tuttle has accumulated various accolades, including most notably the International Bluegrass Association’s Award for Guitar Player of the Year in 2017 – making her the first woman ever to win this prestigious award. With rapid fire bluegrass guitar work, incredible technical skill, a sweet voice and fun, barnstorming songwriting, Molly Tuttle puts even the most talented shredders to shame. Show Sponsor

Beyond the School Walls: Field Trips Matter Some education thought leaders speculate that the most powerful, relevant learning for today’s students may happen outside of the school building. Field trip and other informal learning scenarios offer young people who are more connected to the world via their smart devices than any previous generation, opportunities to grapple with ideas and issues affecting our culture and our planet. Grappling connotes a real struggle. Never has it been more important that young people develop the critical thinking skills to navigate ambiguity and to carefully consider a variety of voices that comprise our community, our country, our continent, our world.
Efforts by education researchers to measure the effects of arts field trips have begun to support the notion that learning in community must be an integral part of the education experience. Their studies demonstrate how field trips matter. Young people who learn with peers through cultural institutions like Walton Arts Center benefit especially in their interest in understanding others’ views. No matter where your child attends school, please join Walton Arts Center with your advocacy for equal access to arts field trips. Our community’s future depends on it.

CONGRATULATIONS to Billie Jo Starr!
2019 Governor’s Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement Billie Jo Starr’s passion for the arts motivated her to advocate for the creation of a performing arts center that would transform the economic and cultural complexion of Fayetteville and Northwest Arkansas. Walton Arts Center opened its doors in 1992, and thanks to her tireless commitment to the arts in Northwest Arkansas it continues to thrive today.
Billie Jo has stated one of her greater accomplishments has been instilling in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren the importance of being an intentional, active patron of the arts because, “The Arts are a common language that we can all speak in a world so often divided.” Billie’s lifelong work will be recognized on March 12, 2019 during a luncheon at the Governor’s Mansion where Gov. Asa Hutchinson will bestow upon her the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award.
