Did You Know… There are approximately 50 languages spoken in Northwest Arkansas! While Walton Arts Center has always focused on presenting great arts experiences from around the globe, we’re redoubling our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion on our stages, among our staff and board, and among our volunteers. To that end, we’re actively participating in several DEI programs and workgroups, and look forward to engaging even more fully with the full mosaic of cultures that make up Northwest Arkansas.
You can get exclusive content and “backstage access” when you follow Walton Arts Center on social media. Don’t forget to use #waltonartscenter in your posts so we can follow along!
Last season, volunteers at Walton Arts Center helped more than 23,600 students and educators as they attended a Colgate Classroom Series performance. In total, these volunteers worked nearly 500 shows. For any one performance in Baum Walker Hall it takes at least 39 volunteers to make theater magic happen! You can become a Walton Arts Center volunteer today by visiting waltonartscenter.org/volunteer.
Walton Arts Center’s Box Office processed more than 388,000 tickets, sent 65,000 pieces of mail and answered more than 48,500 phone calls from July 2018 to July 2019. You can contact our box office at 479.443.5600 or tickets@waltonartscenter.org.

18 Tips for Audience Members Different performances bring different audience and artist expectations. Monitors in the lobby and curtain speakers will share specific restrictions, but here are some general tips to help you and your fellow audience members enjoy the show. Be aware of the kind of show you are attending – a classical music performance, for example, is different from a rock or comedy show, and the etiquette norms may differ. Need help? Ask an usher or staff member for advice and check lobby monitors. Picture taking is generally not allowed, unless the curtain speaker or artist has indicated otherwise. Please set your phone to “silent” mode and do not text during the show.
We welcome children to most shows and know their behavior can sometimes be unpredictable. If your child/children are disruptive to other patrons, we may ask that you move to the lobby until they are ready to return to the quiet environment of the theater. Parents can enjoy the performance on the monitors in the lobby while outside the theater. We can make your experience better! If something is bothering you, please find an usher or House Manager for assistance.
While concessions are allowed in the theater, please enjoy them quietly and with respect for the performer(s) and your fellow audience members. Don’t forget! Bring back your Walton Arts Center cup to future performances for reduced price refills. Hearing and vision enhancement devices are available, free of charge, on a first-come, firstserved basis. Please let a House Manager or usher know if we can help you with any of the devices.
The carrying of weapons and/or firearms is prohibited at Walton Arts Center under Arkansas Code 5-73-306 even if you have a permit. Walton Arts Center is a tobacco-free facility. waltonartscenter.org

Socks in the Frying Pan
Äbhä by Parshwanath Upadhye and Punyah Dance Company
Mar. 5, 2020 Socks in the Frying Pan is a multi-award winning trio from County Clare on the West coast of Ireland, the universal hub of Irish Socks in the Frying Pan traditional music. Their dynamic vocal harmonies, virtuosic musical ability and on-stage wit has captured and captivated audiences the world around. Comprised of the Hayes brothers on the accordion, fiddle and banjo, and their bandmate Aodán Coyn on guitar and vocals, Socks in the Frying Pan’s modern take on the traditional style and energetic approach has gained them critical acclaim and earned them a spot at every major Irish festival in the U.S. Now, the worldwide ‘Sock Invasion’ continues when they take the stage in Arkansas for the first time ever!
April 21, 2020 Punyah Dance Company (Bangalore, India) under the artistic leadership of one of the moust sought-after classical Indian dancers, Parshwanath Upadhye, tells the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana – the story of legendary Lord Rama on a quest to rescue Sita, the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi, whose choices would change the course of history. Punyah approaches India’s favorite epic with a fresh perspective, focusing on the central female character and pushing the boundaries of the traditional dance form Bharatanatyam (ba-rat-NAT-yam), characterized by highly technical footwork and a vocabulary of sign language based on hand gestures, eye contact and facial movements. With creativity and innovation, this familiar story is brought to new life through dance! Show Sponsor

Concert Series Arlo Guthrie
Arlo Guthrie – 20/20 Tour: Featuring Alice’s Restaurant Back By Popular Demand March 20, 2020 In 1965, Arlo Guthrie wrote a folk song about a series of incredulous events that began on Thanksgiving day. “Alice’s Restaurant Massacre” struck a chord with the anti-war counterculture, and by 1967, Guthrie had gone from playing small clubs to playing festivals and stadiums. Since then, he has come to be known to generations as a prolific songwriter, social commentator, master
storyteller, actor, activist and iconic figure in folk music in his own right with a distinguished and varied career spanning over 50 years. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Alice’s Restaurant – a movie based on his song in which he plays himself – Guthrie returns to Northwest Arkansas on a tour that sets the 18-minute monologue that brought him fame and fortune front and center.

Selvaganesh
Experience world-renowned jazz in the Starrlight Jazz Club! All shows in Starr Theater
The Art Blakey Centennial Celebration March 20, 2020 Art Blakey was often called the father of hard bop. He was responsible for producing and developing more jazz talent than any other band leader during his more than six-decade career. Art Blakey’s band, The Jazz Messengers, was considered the quintessential forum for musicians who wished to hone their talent and leave their own mark on the jazz scene. Preserving, protecting and honoring the legacy of Art Blakey, The Messenger Legacy Band is an elite line-up of alumni members of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, each now a longtime leader on his own and considered among jazz’s most accomplished players – including Bobby Watson (alto sax), Essiet Essiet (bass), Geoff Keezer (piano), Brian Lynch (trumpet), Bill Pierce (tenor sax) and Ralph Peterson (drums).
Arun Luthra’s Konnakol Jazz Project with Selvaganesh April 24, 2020 Arun Luthra is one of the premier saxophonists and composers on New York’s jazz scene. He’s an American jazz musician of Indian heritage who explores fusing the modern post-bop sound with elements of Indian classical music, and draws from a wide variety of modern and classic musical influences to create a vibrant new sound and style. Joining Luthra’s ensemble is Selvaganesh, the son of T.H. “Vikku” Vinayakram – the legendary Indian percussionist best-known for his ghatam work in the pioneering acoustic fusion group Shakti with guitarist John McLaughlin. Together, they’ll perform music from Luthra’s Konnakol Jazz Project – a selection of works that highlights Carnatic and Hindustani music rhythms, and the art form of konnakol. Jayme Stone’s Folklife
March 21, 2020
May 14, 2020
Called “a gifted songwriter and a powerhouse singer” with a voice that “booms with the force of a Texas straight-line squall” (Nashville Scene), Grammy Award®-winning singer-songwriter Bonnie Bishop may just be the “new queen of country soul” (Houston Press). More than a decade after her song “Not ‘Cause I Wanted To” topped The New York Times song of the year list, Bishop got her second big break when she started working with Nashville’s hottest producer, Dave Cobb – who helped Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell become award-winning chart toppers. Inspired by the Motown greats, like Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, Cobb encouraged Bishop to break up with her old identity – moving away from country to pursue a career as a soul singer. As Nashville’s establishment and legions of roots-music fans are now well aware, she ain’t who she was.
Jayme Stone is a composer, banjoist, instigator, producer and educator who has developed a process of trawling for understudied sounds in the more arcane corners of the world to see how they’ll land in his musical universe. On his newest album, Stone treats old field recordings as heirloom seeds passed down from a bygone generation that he plants in modern soil, burgeoning into vibrant Sea Island spirituals, Creole calypsos and stomp-down Appalachian dance tunes for contemporary listeners. Performing alongside an ensemble with virtuosity, musical integrity and irrepressible charm, Stone’s Folklife album is full of beautiful, intriguing, thoughtful music that rewards our attention as much as it captures it, and proves that folk songs are indeed perennials for the people.

LearningThroughtheArts at Walton Arts Center
Important new research involving Walton Arts Center has demonstrated the benefits of arts programming for students. The research, conducted by professors from the University of Missouri, Texas A&M University and Walton Arts Center Vice President of Learning and Engagement Laura Goodwin, measures the benefits of the original stage production Digging Up Arkansas, which tells Arkansas history through an interactive theater experience. A collaboration among Walton Arts Center, Trike Theatre and Fayetteville educator Mike Thomas, the play was presented in every Arkansas County. More than 30,000 third through fifth graders have learned from Digging Up Arkansas since 2009. By randomly assigning school groups to see the performance, researchers found that students who experienced Digging Up
Arkansas demonstrated greater historical knowledge, content that is mandated by state curricular standards. Participating students also demonstrated increased enthusiasm for learning history, greater historical empathy and an increased interest in the performing arts. These findings suggest valuable educational benefits offered through school partnerships with arts organizations. In recent years, studies have documented a decreased emphasis in arts and humanities instruction that correlates with the rise of test-based accountability pressures in public schools. One potential way for schools to fill this gap is to partner with arts organizations like Walton Arts Center. We are proud to serve the field through high quality research and hope this study will be useful to arts advocates in Northwest Arkansas and beyond.
