From the President/CEO
Welcome Back to Your Walton Arts Center If there’s one thing I’ve missed over the past year, it’s been the opportunity to gather for live performances. I’ve not just missed seeing a Broadway play or watching a musician who I love perform; I’ve missed coming together as a community for a shared art experience. It’s in these communal experiences where we realize that we are not alone; we develop empathy for our fellow man; and we are able to process some of our deepest feelings. In short, these art encounters make us better people.
Now more than ever we need these art experiences so that we can connect to others and escape the day-to-day challenges of life. And on behalf of the staff, the volunteers and our board, I want to welcome you to your Walton Arts Center for our 30th anniversary season.
Enjoy the show!

Tips for Audience Members Different performances bring different audience and artist expectations. Monitors in the lobby and curtain speakers will share specific restrictions, but here are some general tips to help you and your fellow audience members enjoy the show. Be aware of the kind of show you are attending – a classical music performance, for example, is different from a rock or comedy show, and the etiquette norms may differ. Need help? Ask an usher or staff member for advice and check lobby monitors. Picture taking is generally not allowed, unless the curtain speaker or artist has indicated otherwise. Please set your phone to “silent” mode and do not text during the show.
We welcome children to most shows and know their behavior can sometimes be unpredictable. If your child/children are disruptive to other patrons, we may ask that you move to the lobby until they are ready to return to the quiet environment of the theater. Parents can enjoy the performance on the monitors in the lobby while outside the theater. We can make your experience better! If something is bothering you, please find an usher or House Manager for assistance.
While concessions are allowed in the theater, please enjoy them quietly and with respect for the performer(s) and your fellow audience members. Don’t forget! Bring back your Walton Arts Center cup to future performances for reduced price refills. Hearing and vision enhancement devices are available, free of charge, on a first-come, firstserved basis. Please let a House Manager or usher know if we can help you with any of the devices.
The carrying of weapons and/or firearms is prohibited at Walton Arts Center under Arkansas Code 5-73-306 even if you have a permit. Walton Arts Center is a tobacco-free facility. waltonartscenter.org

Grammy Award® winner Hussain and pre-eminent classical tabla master Zakir Hussain presents TRIVENI: a classical Indian program featuring Kala Ramnath on violin and Jayanthi Kumaresh on Saraswati veena. Triveni is a mythical site where three sacred rivers unite in India and the name aptly represents the confluence of these accomplished virtuosos, joining together for the first time. This fluent, joyous and entirely original collaboration features soaring melodies and complex rhythms that seamlessly stitch North and South Indian traditions together – a hallmark of Zakir Hussain’s iconic career.
A renowned festival and concert-hall headliner; the youngest musician ever nominated for a Grammy Joey Award in a jazz category; Alexander and a media favorite who earned a front-page profile in The New York Times, Joey Alexander’s original music seamlessly incorporates influences from gospel, Latin music and more, with through lines that emerge: a heaven-sent sense of song and form, and a keen ability to generate escalating excitement over the course of a performance. Based on personal truths about the power of hope, faith and family, this performance takes on joy as the ultimate expression of resistance, reclaiming the narrative of people of color being voiceless, powerless and victimized, and turning it on its head by embodying stories of joy – because when humans have survived immense hardship and injustice, prevailing with their humanity intact, the presence of joy has always been at the root.

April 29, 2022 Mingus Big Band celebrates the music of one of the most important figures in twentieth century American music – virtuoso bass player, pianist, bandleader and composer Charles Mingus. Mingus recorded over a hundred albums and wrote over three hundred compositions in his 56 years, leaving the second-largest legacy in American music after Duke Ellington. Today, this 14-piece band provides a home base for many top performers and exciting new players. “The music is, like Mingus himself, earthy, passionate, soulful and intense – and at all times swinging.” (NPR)

In the first circus-style adaptation of Stravinsky’s Rite Circa Sacre of Spring, the critically acclaimed contemporary circus company Circa tightly weaves together powerful world-class acrobatics and dynamic encounters suffused with dark humor and rich tenderness. When the famous high C on the bassoon sounds, the stage explodes with bodies in electrifying displays of physicality and power. Under the direction of circus visionary Yaron Lifschitz, Sacre is a distinctive production that penetrates the senses and stirs the soul.
From legendary composer Marvin Hamlisch comes the Tony Award® and Pulitzer Prize-winning singular sensation, A CHORUS LINE! Casting for a new Broadway musical is almost complete, and for 17 dancers, this audition is the chance of a lifetime. A CHORUS LINE brilliantly evokes both the glamour and grind of showbiz. It’s the musical for everyone who’s ever had a dream and put it all on the line. The iconic score features such classics as “What I Did for Love,” “One,” “I Hope I Get It” and more! With its celebration and true-to-life depiction of performers and their struggle to achieve greatness on the Broadway stage, A CHORUS LINE has earned unanimous praise as a true masterpiece of live theater.

Learning Through the Arts at Walton Arts Center
Did you take a field trip to WAC as a child? Maybe you’re a teacher who looks forward to bringing their students to a show – or even a parent who makes a point to be a field trip chaperone when your child is heading to WAC.
When you become a Friend of Walton Arts Center, make a donation, or attend Art of Wine, Masquerade Ball or AMPfest, you are helping us continue to do this important work in our community.
In a typical season more than 25,000 children get to see a live theater performance at Walton Arts Center through the Colgate Classroom Series. The series is designed to give students of all ages an opportunity to take an arts field trip to the theater. There are multiple performances to choose from each season including shows like the entertaining Popovich Comedy Pet Theater, or educational shows like Digging Up Arkansas that effectively teach students the history of Arkansas.
COMMUNITY IMPACT
We believe that all students should have access to formative arts experiences. As we continue to navigate the COVID-19 environment, we recognize that field trips are more challenging than ever for schools. We continued to offer virtual-only curriculum-linked performances in Fall 2021, and we look forward to a return to in-person school performances in Spring 2022 – all at no cost to schools.
+
Since 2001, more than 600,000 students and teachers have been served by our arts education programs.
+
More than 25,000 students from nearly 90 schools annually experience a live performance at Walton Arts Center as part of the Colgate Classroom Series.
+
Each year, nearly 100 teachers and teaching artists learn to use the arts to teach core curriculum subjects like literacy, social studies, and science. These exemplary educators bring the arts to more than 1,000 students, kindergarten through high school.
+
More than 69,000 students in 75 Arkansas counties have learned about Arkansas history through the arts programs since 2013.
