HEAD COACH GEORGE WHITE MEN’S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH SECOND SEASON
Coach White recently completed his first season at the helm, after being selected to become the 18th head coach of the Virginia State University Men’s Basketball program last Spring. White came to VSU after spending the 2008-09 season as an assistant coach with the Colorado 14ers of the NBA Development League. The team finished with the best regular-season record in the NBA DLeague, winning the Southwest Division with a 34-16 record. The 14ers then won the NBA D-League Championship, sweeping Utah in the championship series. White spent the previous two seasons as the Director of External Relations for the men's basketball program at Stanford University. He was an integral part of the staff that led the Cardinal to the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and helped develop NBA draft picks Brook Lopez of the New Jersey Nets, Robin Lopez of the Phoenix Suns, and Landry Fields of the New York Knicks. Possessing a significant track record in all aspects of coaching, scouting, game preparation, and player evaluation, White was also heavily involved with the marketing of the Stanford program including areas such as community relations and all fundraising and cultivation of key constituents. He also oversaw the development and promotion of the Cage Club, 6th Man Club and all special events, as well as on and offline publications and initiatives. White also coordinated interaction between the athletic and university administration and media and public relations. In addition to initiating the Career Development Program and lecturing at and assisting in the management of summer camps, he was involved with many operational aspects of the Cardinal men’s basketball program. White came to Stanford from Rider University, where he served as an assistant coach in 2005-06 where he helped develop NBA first-round pick Jason Thompson of the Sacramento Kings. Before his stint at Rider, White spent two seasons as an assistant coach under Mike Dunlap at Metropolitan State College in Denver, helping guide the Roadrunners to a No. 1 national ranking while reaching the NCAA Division II Final Four in 2004 and Elite Eight in 2005. White also served as the Head Coach at Ursinus College from 1995 to 2000, where he led the Bears to two consecutive playoff appearances. In his six seasons at the helm, four players scored over 1,000 career points, one earned All-America honors and all of his four-year players graduated. White has worked with the Denver Nuggets organization as Assistant to the President and scouted college players for the team. White also possesses significant management, marketing and finance experience outside of athletics. A 1983 graduate of Harvard University, White was a four-year letterwinner for the Crimson and served as a team captain during his senior year. A two-year starter, White was named Harvard's Top Defensive Player.

COACHING STAFF DONALD PAYTON MEN’S BASKETBALL ASST. HEAD COACH SECOND SEASON
Donald Payton enters his second season as the top assistant for the Trojans. Payton was previously the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Clinton Junior College in Rock Hill, SC. Payton returned to Clinton after a two year hiatus after serving as the top assistant at both Barton College and Lock Haven University. From 2003-05, Payton served as the top assistant coach at Clinton Junior College. The Golden Bears were 41-22, claimed their first ever NJCAA DI National Tournament appearance and advancing to the NJCAA Region X Championship game both seasons. Clinton was 22-11 in the 2008-09 season, claimed share of the regular-season Region X Conference Championship while advancing to the Region X Conference Championship game. The Golden Bears were 37-28 during Payton’s tenure as head coach. In two seasons at the helm, Payton coached four all conference performers (three on the first team), helped place all sophomores in college while six of the eight accepted athletic scholarships, and had a graduation rate of 100% for student-athletes in the program during his tenure. Coach Payton enters his 18th year of coaching, including eight years of college level experience. From 1996-2002 he founded and was the head men’s coach for Supreme Court Basketball, college exhibition travel team. During his time with Supreme Court, he sponsored basketball camps specifically for “at-risk” youth. At Barton College, Coach Payton was an integral part of Barton College’s run to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in the 2005-06 season. The Bulldogs finished the season 28-4 claiming several championships including CVAC regular season champions, CVAC conference tournament champions, and NCAA East Regional Champions, before falling in overtime to the eventual champions Winona State University. Payton coached three student-athletes that went on to play professional basketball. After the record setting season at Barton College, Payton accepted a similar position at Lock Haven University of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Prior to his arrival in north central Pennsylvania, the Bald Eagles squads were coming off three consecutive 4-23 seasons. With Payton’s influence, Lock Haven finished the 2006-07 season with a 12-15 record and came one game short of making the PSAC West Division playoffs for the first time in several years.

2010-11 SEASON OUTLOOK
The 2010-11 Virginia State University men's basketball team looks to improve on 7-20 overall record in the 2009-10 season by reloading with new talent. Replacing six players from a season ago, second year head coach George White, reloads with several newcomers to play alongside 6 returnees. The Trojans averaged 68.8 points per game in 2009-10 and finished fourth in the CIAA Eastern Division. The Trojans will have to replace 70 percent of their team scoring as six seniors depart including VSU's all time three point leader, Trey Mines as he concluded his Trojan career with 228 made three pointers. Seniors Brandon Plummer (Norfolk, VA) will be the floor leaders for the Trojans. Plummer returns as the leading scorer for the Trojans as he ranked 10th in scoring in the CIAA conference. Plummer started 23 games last season, averaged 13.5 point per game, and went a perfect 10-10 from the free-throw line twice in 200910 season. VSU also returns Christopher Washington, Mike Bynum, Ivan Harris, and Dijon Cuffee at the perimeter positions from last season. Davon Charity adds depth to the Trojan front court. Coach White also brings in an influx of new faces to make an impact at the Land of Troy. Coach White and the Trojans will open their 2010-11 season on November 15 in a home game against Pfeiffer University inside Daniels Gymnasium.
