About VSU

Looking for a university where the faculty and staff turn dreams into reality? Look no further than Virginia State University. A student population of nearly 5,000 enjoys personal attention by the faculty and staff not typically found at larger institutions. U.S. News & World Report acknowledged VSU’s excellence by naming the University the top, public, master’s level HBCU in America! Virginia State University was founded in 1882 as the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute, making it the first fully state supported, fouryear institution of higher learning for Blacks in America. Today, Virginia State University is one of Virginia’s two land-grant institutions. The campus sits atop a rolling landscape overlooking the Appomattox River in the Chesterfield County village of Ettrick. It is accessible by Interstates 95 and 85, which intersect in adjacent Petersburg, as well as U.S. Routes 1, 301 and 460. The University is centrally located about two hours away from Washington, DC to the north, the North Carolina Triangle area to the south, the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. VSU students live and learn on a 236-acre main campus, with more than 50 buildings, including 15 dormitories and 16 classroom buildings, and a 416-acre agricultural research facility. Led by its 12th president, Eddie N. Moore, Jr., former Virginia State Treasurer, the University boasts healthy fiscal management and growth, with a 2007-08 operating budget of over $125 million. The University’s academic programs include the “Bridges to Baccalaureate” program for students transferring from two-year colleges who want to major in the sciences, the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge and the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program for students planning to pursue doctoral degrees in their chosen field of study. Honors scholarships are also available to entering freshmen, including the Presidential and Provost Scholarships. In 2006, VSU inaugurated the Low Income Families With Talented Students (LIFTS) financial aid program, the first of its kind among HBCUs. LIFTS promises to meet 100 percent of a qualifying student’s financial need by providing 75 percent of a student’s need through scholarships and grants and limiting debt through student loans to 25 percent of VSU’s in-state cost of attendance over four years, regardless of state residency. Admissions and academic information is available at the University’s Web site, www.vsu.edu or by calling (800) 871-7611. Virginia State University offers 50 baccalaureate and master’s degree programs and a Certificate of Advanced Study within five schools: The School of Agriculture; The School of Business; The School of Engineering, Science and Technology; The School of Liberal Arts and Education; and The School of Graduate Studies, Research and Outreach. In 2006, Virginia State University graduated its first-ever doctoral students, who earned their Doctor of Education in Administration and Supervision. In 2005, VSU welcomed the first students to its Nursing Program. This important program was introduced to meet the pressing need for qualified nurses in the Southside Virginia region. The School of Graduate Studies coordinates a bachelor of individualized studies degree program, a non-traditional baccalaureate program primarily for working adults. Students can pursue the degree on a full-time or part-time basis.

On April 2-3,1865 the most famous event to be seen by the residents of this small mill village was the passing of the main bodies of two great armies down the main road of Ettrick after crossing Campbell’s Bridge from Petersburg under the orders of Robert E. Lee. This was of course the march to Appomattox Court House.

Virginia State University President Keith T. Miller The Board of Visitors made the selection on July 1, 2010, that Dr. Miller will replace President Eddie N. Moore, Jr., who retired in June 2010, after 17 years of successful service to Virginia State University. Dr. Miller began his academic career in 1987 at Fairleigh Dickinson University as an assistant professor in the Management and Marketing Department and as Director of the campus MBA program. In 1991, his last year there he also served as interim chair of the Management and Marketing Department. Dr. Miller moved to Quinnipiac College in Hamden, CT in 1991, where he spent three years as associate dean of the School of Business. He later became the Dean of the College of Business at Niagara University, a position he held from 1994 to 2001. During his tenure there, the university was granted accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Additionally, enrollment increased by 20 percent. Dr. Miller was named provost and vice chancellor of the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, in 2001. Under Dr. Miller’s leadership, the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, developed and expanded its online programming in business, nursing, and social work; secured many external grants, entered into a number of articulation agreements with nearby two year colleges, and finalized new international collaborative agreements. During his tenure as President of Lock Haven University, it became the only public institution in the state to require laptop computers. In recent years there has been a 30 percent increase in student community service hours and a 50 percent increase in honors students. Foreign delegations have been sponsored from Hungary, Romania, Kenya, Taiwan, Australia, Mexico, China, and the Ukraine, among others. Lock Haven University is a wellrespected, student-centered, public university that currently has the largest enrollment in its history. Dr. Miller has won numerous awards as he has published or presented more than sixty papers primarily on business related topics. He has served on the editorial boards of various journals and speaks to community, civic and professional organizations regularly. He served for two years on the Board of Directors of the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (now named the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) (AACSB) and served four years on the executive board of the Middle Atlantic Association of Colleges of Business Administration. At Lock Haven University, Dr. Miller was appointed to and has served on the following boards: Clinton County Community Foundation, Pennsylvania Campus Compact (current chairman), the Center for Rural Pennsylvania, AASCU Committee on Policies and Purposes, Lock Haven Kiwanis, and the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) United Nations Commission on Disarmament Education, Conflict Resolution and Peace. Additionally, Dr. Miller is the IAUP Representative to the United Nations. Through the years Dr. Miller has been active in faculty development, enrollment management, service learning, accreditation, small business development, and significant fundraising. The Virginia State University football team has called Rogers Stadium home since the 1950 season. At 13,500 seats, Rogers Stadium is the largest football stadiums in NCAA Division II and in the CIAA. In addition to football, the CIAA Track and Field Championships are held every year in Rogers Stadium. Opened in 1950, and originally called the VSU Athletic Field, the stadium replaced Rogers Field, where the Trojans had played football since the formation of the formal team in 1902. The stadium was christened Rogers Stadium in 1951. The stadium is named in honor of William A. Rogers (at right), the first coach of the Trojans’ football team. VSU won the opening game in Rogers Stadium when the Trojans downed Bluefield State 25-7 on September 30, 1950. Booker Bradshaw scored the first touchdown in the history of the new stadium. Top 10 Rogers Stadium Crowds A record crowd of 32,000 packed Rogers Stadium for the Trojans’ match-up against CIAA arch-rival Virginia Union University on October 27, 1978. The structure, which sits at the Fourth Avenue entrance of the VSU campus, has seen several renovations over the years. State-of-the-art lights were installed in the stadium in 2004, and new concession stands and restrooms were built in 2006. A renovated press box and Presidential Suites opened in 2007, and new coaches’ offices, locker rooms and weight rooms opened in 2008. In addition, the entire field is a wireless internet “hot spot,” so fans can log on to keep track of the game’s statistics. New goalposts were installed for the first game of the 2008 season.

2010 UniversityRED-ZONE COACHES OPPONENTS GAME INDIVIDUAL DEFENSIVE OPPONENT Football REVIEWS & STATISTICS STATISTICS STAFF STATISTICS COACHES & STAFF 2010 Virginia Virginia State State Football Football COACHES & STAFF Andrew Faison VSU FOOTBALL HEAD COACH NINTH SEASON 41-39 RECORD Coach Andrew Faison is heading into his ninth season at the helm of the Virginia State University football program. He has compiled a 41-39 record through the 2009 season. After taking over for Lou Anderson prior to the 2002 season, Faison has worked hard to take VSU football to the next level. In his inaugural season (2002), he guided the Trojans to a 7-3 record and second place in the Eastern Division of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Although the Trojans dropped to 5-5 in 2003, Faison rebuilt VSU into a contender the next season. Under Faison’s guidance, VSU finished at 6-4 in both 2004 and 2005. Injuries to key players at crucial times took their toll on the Trojans in 2006 when VSU finished at 2-8, and it marked the first time a Faison-coached team finished with a losing record. Injuries again hit the Trojans in ‘08, but Faison was able to work enough magic for the Trojans to finish with a 4-6 record. Before arriving at the Land of Troy, Faison was an assistant coach at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), where he helped guide the Rams to the CIAA Championship in 1999 and 2000 and CIAA Northern Division titles in 2000 and 2001. Prior to coaching at WSSU, Faison worked for Lou Anderson at VSU. As an assistant coach for the Trojans, he helped guide VSU to the championship of the CIAA’s Northern Division in 1987 and 1988. An All-CIAA Defensive Back during his playing days at VSU, Faison earned Most Valuable Player honors among the VSU defensive backs in 1980 and was inducted into the VSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.

Corey Sullivan is entering his second year as offensive coordinator at Virginia State University. Sullivan comes to VSU from Hampton University, where he spent two seasons as offensive coordinator and four years as wide receivers coach. Sullivan had a great impact on the receiving corps at Hampton, producing two all-conference selections and helping Marquay McDaniel and Onrea Jones earn invitations to the 2007 NFL combine, where they went on to be listed on NFL rosters at the Denver Broncos and the Indianapolis Colts, respectively. Under Sullivan’s direction McDaniel closed out his career by breaking Hampton’s single-season records for receptions (59) and touchdown catches (14). The 2007 season was a positive one for Sullivan where he had the number one scoring offense, number one passing offense and number one red zone offense in the MEAC. Sullivan’s direction led red-shirt, Senior Jeremy Gilchrist to break the single-season receiving record with 1,043 yards, single-season records reception with (69) and the only player to record a 1,000 yard season. Red-shirt Junior Terry “Tj” Mitchell to break Hampton’s single-season passing yards with 2,309 yards. Gilchrist and Mitchell went on to be All- MEAC along with Dennis Conley, as an offensive lineman. In 2008, Herbert Bynes passed Mitchell’s record with 2700 yards passing and 17 touchdowns in Sullivan’s spread offense which led to Justin brown signing with the Arizona cardinals as a free agent. A four-year letterman at Tennessee State, Sullivan was a two-time All-Ohio Valley Conference receiver for the Tigers. During his senior campaign, the Miami, Florida native was an All-American and Spirit Award candidate. Following his days at TSU, he went on to spend the 2000 season as free agent wide receiver with the Buffalo Bills, in addition to playing with several Arena League teams. Sullivan, who earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2002, returned to his alma mater in 2004 to coach the wide receivers. http://www.vsu.edu/pages/102.asp

Battle secured the starting position by leading VSU in their final two games of the 2009 season and excelling in spring practice. The Trojans hope to control the clock with the help of their explosive backfield; junior Antwain Lyde (6-0, 200 lbs.) and senior Rahoo Walker (5-10, 195 lbs.) Both running backs made huge impacts during the 2009 season rushing for a combined total of 1,056 yards and 14 touchdowns. “Lyde and Walker are both physical and powerful players that complement each other,” said Coach Faison. Both Lyde and Walker finished last season ranked respectively among the CIAA rushing leaders. Lyde finished fourth in rushing yards averaging 66.6 yards per game and Walker finished eighth in scoring touchdowns totaling 7. The Trojans top wide receivers, senior Brian Berry and sophomore Corey Young will be returning as well. Berry (5-10, 180 lbs.), was a member of the 2008 All-CIAA Second Team, even though he was troubled by injuries after week three, Berry still managed to lead his team in receptions last season. Scoring two touchdowns and playing as a true freshman in ‘09, Corey Young (6-1, 180 lbs.) led VSU with 349 receiving yards. Sophomore Kai James (6-0, 180 lbs.) also returns with his excellent route running abilities, making him the possession receiver for the Trojans as he did in their season finale win making a key catch against Bowie State. Defensively Virginia State returns six starters from their ’09 conference leading pass defense and second leading scoring defense. Controlling the line of scrimmage on defensive end will be sophomore Rashard Vesprey (6-1, 270 lbs.) and junior James Pratt (6-0, 265 lbs.). VSU’s top returning linebacker is senior leader LaQuentin Milo (6-0, 227 lbs.). Milo was the second leading tackler in finishing with fifty total tackles on the season. Also returning is stand-out sophomore Byron Gourdine (6-1, 200 lbs.) who led the conference in fumbles recovered and also finished second with five fumbles forced. The Trojans secondary will showcase four players who have played together successfully leading VSU to the conference leading pass defense (110.6 yards) and second leading scoring defense (17.3 points per game). VSU’s defensive backs will be led by seniors Ian White (6-1, 190 lbs.) at corner and Alfred Ngauja (5-11, 185lbs.) at safety. Ngauja recorded two interceptions in ’09 and was ranked twelfth in the conference with six passes defended. Juniors Larry Armstead (6-0, 185 lbs.), who will play the other safety spot, and Howard Spencer (5-8, 170 lbs.) rounds out the Trojan secondary at the other corner. The kicking game will display the Trojans leading team scorer, senior kicker Justin Parker (5-9, 170lbs.). Parker made 21 of 24 point-after attempts and 7 of 9 field goals last season for the Trojans.

The Trojans return with a double dose of quickness and power in the backfield with two consistent rushing weapons on offense, Antwain Lyde’s physical running style and the vision and quickness of Rahoo Walker. In ‘09 Antwain Lyde led VSU in rushing yards with 163 carries for 666 yards. Lyde ran for over 100 yards in two games; 145 yards vs. Livingstone and 103 yards vs. Lincoln (MO). Rahoo Walker has great vision and can picture where the hole is going to be before it appears. Walker had a team leading 7 rushing touchdowns in ‘09 as two came in a Trojan key win in Week 5 at Fayetteville State.

The top four receiving leaders return for VSU. Brian Berry returns for his senior season with VSU after catching 22 passes for 290 yards in ’09 and had his best game in Week 6 vs. Elizabeth City State with 5 receptions for 103 yards. VSU’s top returning receiver Corey Young as a true freshman in ‘09 stretched the field with his height and speed leading the team in receiving yards with 349 yards. Young’s longest reception of 75 yards came against Lincoln (MO) in Week 3. Hoping for a breakout season in ‘10 is Kai James. James is an excellent route runner with the ability to become VSU’s prime possession receiver as he caught three key first-down passes on VSU’s Homecoming Game vs. Bowie State. Corey Sims adds to VSU’s depth at wide-out as he caught twelve passes for 145 yards in ’09 season.

Virginia State University was held to seven first downs and just 50 yards rushing as Saint Paul's shut out the Trojans 18-0 on Saturday night in Rogers Stadium in Ettrick, Va. VSU quarterback Leonard Michael Johnson completed 10 of 23 passes for 91 yards. Saint Paul's running back Albert Tinsley had 136 yards on 23 carries while scoring two touchdowns. The shut out was the first for a Saint Paul's team against Virginia State since 1933 and marked the first time the Trojans have been shut out at home since 2001. The loss dropped VSU to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in CIAA play. Saint Paul's is now 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the CIAA.

Virginia State University's Kevin Allen had 11 tackles and a fumble recovery, but Virginia Union University rushed for a school record 490 yards as the Panthers downed the Trojans 31-3 in front of a national television audience in Rogers Stadium on October 15. The game, which was broadcast nationwide by CBS College Sports, saw VUU break the school record of 414 rushing yards in a single game, set in 1960. Antwain Lyde led the Trojans with 55 yards rushing while quarterback Edward Davis was 5-for-13 for 30 yards. VSU's only points came when kicker Justin Parker connected on a 26-yard field goal with seven minutes left in the first half. VUU was led in rushing by Trevon Winston's 180 yards while Panther teammate Christopher Smith had 145 yards on the ground. In all, Virginia Union tallied 511 total yards in offense to VSU's 118. The loss dropped VSU to 4-4 on the season while VUU raised it's record to 5-3. The meeting was also the 100th game between the two schools in a series which dates back to 1900. The Trojans lead the series 49-42-9. VSU now travels to Lincoln University, Pa., to meet the Lions of Lincoln University on October 24.

Virginia State University used three fourth-quarter touchdowns to seal a 34-14 win over Lincoln University on October 24 in West Grove, Pa. VSU's Corey Young hauled in a pass from freshman quarterback Jarred Battle and raced 75 yards for a score while sophomore Alfred Ngauja intercepted a Lincoln pass and returned it 69 yards for another touchdown. VSU's Rahoo Walker capped the scoring with a four-yard run late in the game. Walker led VSU with 101 yards and two touchdowns while teammate Antwain Lyde (above) finished with 98 yards. Battle, making his first career start, passed for 143 yards and a touchdown. VSU closes out the 2009 football season by taking on Bowie State University in the Trojans' homecoming on October 31.

Jarred Battle led VSU to win in their final game of the 2009 season. Antwain Lyde led the Trojans in rushing with 89 yards and one touchdown. Lyde’s partner in the backfield Rahoo Walker also scored a rushing touchdown and gained 46 yards for the offense.. Homecoming partygoers got an early start on the festivities when they arrived in their RVs on Friday, October 30. The revelers came as the Homecoming Lot on the VSU Campus began filling up with vehicles. The game could also have implications in the race for the CIAA Eastern Division crown. If Virginia Union University is defeated by Elizabeth City State University on October 31, and VSU beats BSU, then the Eastern Division will be thrown into a three-way tie for the title.

2010 Virginia State Football UniversityTHEFootball LEGEND OF THE THE TROJAN LEGEND OF THE TROJAN

The Legend of The Trojan The Trojans exhibited bravery, endurance, power and daring in their exploits to exert their supremacy in physical combat. The name “Trojans is tied to the warriors of Virginia State, for they too, display these same qualities in defending the honor and prowess of Virginia State in the world of athletics. Prior to October 22, 1932, the athletic teams at Virginia State were referred to either as Hilltoppers, because the school is located high upon a hill, or Statesmen after the second of the official school name. Both of these names seemed too tame and incongruous with hard work, fighting, and the hard knocks, especially those encountered by the football team.
