HEAD COACH

James Hill WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH FIFTH SEASON

James Hill is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Virginia State University Lady Trojan basketball team. This season Coach Hill became the first Virginia State women's coach to be named the CIAA Coach of the Year in back-to-back seasons. Taking over a VSU team which had only won four games five years ago, Hill guided the Lady Trojans to a 22-7 record and the CIAA Eastern Division crown in 2010. The Lady Trojans also made it to the semi-finals of the CIAA Tournament for the second straight year. To cap off the season, VSU made it's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2002 and while Hill was named the CIAA Coach of the Week on three separate occasions. Hill also became the third VSU women's coach to record back-to-back 20-win seasons. Leon Bey and Bertha Cummings achieved the feat during the 1980s. Hill also became the first VSU coach to guide the Lady Trojans to a Top 20 ranking in the USA Today/ ESPN Women's Basketball Poll. VSU was ranked as high as #16, the team's highest ranking ever in the national poll. The Lady Trojans, under Coach Hill's guidance, also reached as high as #3 in the Atlantic Region of the NCAA, marking the team's highest ranking ever in the regional poll. Hill's coaching philosophy, both on and off the court has blossomed into academic success for his Lady Trojans. Rhon'Neisha Taylor was named to the CIAA- All Commissioner's Academic Team for the 09-10 season. Hill also coached three other Lady Trojans that were recipients of the 2009-10 DII Academic Achievement Awards; Domminique Dunn, Tierney Rock, and Nia Thompson. Hill guided the Lady Trojans to a 21-8 record in 2008-09, becoming one of only four VSU coaches to reach the 20+ win plateau. Only Leon Bey, Bertha Cummings and Peggy Davis have reached 20 or more wins in a single season while at VSUA Division II, and only Cummings had more wins, with 23 wins in a single season. Hill was named the CIAA Coach of the Week twice in 2008 -09, and the Lady Trojans reached the semi-finals of the CIAA Tournament for the first time since 2002. VSU was also ranked in the Top 50 of the USA Today/WBCA Rankings several times during 2008-09, marking the team's first appearance in the poll since the 2001-02 season. VSU was also ranked as high as sixth in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional Poll and won nine of their first 10 games last season, a feat that hadn't happened since the 1995-96 team won their first 18 games. For his efforts, Hill was named the 2009 CIAA Coach of the Year. The Lady Trojans were also given the award for the highest team grade point average in the CIAA that year. In his first season, Hill guided the Lady Trojans to a 9-20 record, including a 5746 first-round upset of Virginia Union University in the 2007 CIAA Tournament. The win was the first for a Lady Trojan team in the tournament in four years. In his first season, Hill was named CIAA Coach of the Week twice, once after the Lady Trojans upset Fayetteville State and Elizabeth City State in back-to-back games. In 2007-08, Hill coached the Lady Trojans to an 11-18 mark, and guided VSU to the second round of the CIAA Tournament. VSU also won the John B. McLendon Team Sportsmanship Award from the CIAA. Hill is a native of Macon, Ga., where he attended Northeast High School. He played basketball for four years while at Northeast, winning the Best All-Around Player and Most Assists Award for three years. He also received the Grit Award, one of the highest athletic awards given in Georgia. Hill landed at Shaw University, where he played basketball for three years while earning his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Allied Health and Professional Recreation. He started his coaching career at Nash High School, where he was an assistant coach on the basketball and football teams. Hill moved on to Apex High School, and quickly received an assistant coaching position at his alma mater, Shaw University. During Hill’s tenure at Shaw, the Lady Bears won three consecutive CIAA championships, three Black College Championships, a South Atlantic Regional Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight. Hill was also named the CIAA Assistant Coach of the Year for two straight years while Shaw obtained an overall record 105-21 during his time as assistant coach.

COACHING STAFF CHIANTE WESTER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ASST. COACH FIFTH SEASON

Chiante Wester enters her fifth year coaching at Virginia State University. Chiante is a graduate of Shaw University, where she received her Bachelor's of Sciences degree in Allied Health Professional while participating in Women's Basketball from 2000-2002. While attending Shaw she received several awards such as outstanding player, Outstanding Service Award, Athletic Trainer Senior Award, Most Improved Basketball Player and an Outstanding Student Honoree at Shaw University. Upon graduation she moved on to be in charge of all youth at Garner Road YMCA where she was the Director of Youth Basketball Operations and Child Care Department. After four years of service, she left the YMCA to become the Assistant Women's Basketball Coach for Virginia State University. While serving her third year, she was one of 25 coaches chosen from 500 applicants to attend the 2008 NCAA Women's Coaches Academy. Chiante's duties as a coach are managing study hall and academic progress. She is involved with all aspects of the Lady Trojan program. She serves as Film Coordinator and handles all film exchanges. She is responsible for recruiting, scouting, academic progress, supervising all noncoaching personnel, player development and administrative duties.

GENE THOMPSON WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ASST. COACH FIFTH SEASON Gene Thompson is an assistant to the Lady Trojan Basketball team as well as Men’s Tennis Coach at Virginia State University. Before coming to VSU, Coach Thompson coached Delaware with stops in Virginia and North Carolina where his high school basketball coaching record was 489 wins and 227 loses. He coached football (A state title in 1971); Track & Field (A state title in 1995); and tennis. He was name State Coach of the Year in Basketball, Tennis, and Track & Field. He was also named Conference Basketball Coach of the Year nine times. He has worked the fame Five Star Basketball Camp for over 30 years along side coaches like Hubie Brown, Rick Patino, and John Calipari. He coach Christian Lattner, Grant Hill, Monte Williams, and Vince Carter on his camp teams. The Five Star Camp is where all the great ones attend. A native of Newport News, Virginia, Thompson graduated from Carver High School and attended Compton College and graduate from Elizabeth City State University, BS. He received his Masters degree from Virginia State University. Thompson is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

ANTHONY MILLS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GRADUATE ASST. SECOND SEASON A native of Brooklyn, NY Anthony Mills graduated from Meadowbrook High School (Chesterfield, VA) and continued his education and graduated from Virginia State University with a Bachelors Degree in Teacher Education: Physical Education. Mr. Mills is currently pursuing his Masters Degree in Sports Management. Prior, Mills has coached on the community, middle school and on a highly competitive AAU level in Richmond, VA from 2002-2008. He have achieved great success by winning multiple championships on those levels and helping young athletes academically and athletically. In 2002 Anthony Mills founded and establish Richmond USA Basketball Club, a youth basketball exposure team stationed out of Richmond, VA. He parted ways with the organization to finish his education and pursue college coaching in 2008. Now Anthony Mills is a member of the Virginia State University Athletic Dept. and is a young up-and-coming coach with knowledge and intrinsic passion for the game of basketball.

SUPPORT STAFF

JASON POMPEY SPORTS INFORMATION Starting his second year as the Assistant Sports information Director, Jason Pompey inherits the office of sports information at Virginia State University. Pompey has two years of previous sports information duties starting out as an undergraduate work-study student at Virginia Union University and as a graduate-assistant at Virginia State University. Pompey received his Bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in Marketing from Virginia Union University in 2009 and will receive a Masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in Sports Management from Virginia State University in December of 2010. Interning for previous sports information directors such as Jim Junot at Virginia State University as well as both Tiffany D. Sykes and Tamika Duck at Virginia Union University, Pompey has worked and learned various tasks in the sports information world. With a great background, Pompey has the drive and passion to continue the trend of young successful sports information directors in the CIAA conference. In addition to becoming the prime contact for VSU Sports Information, Pompey will be responsible for web content maintenance, publication of athletic newspapers, script for game summaries, pre and post game process, composing/editing player profiles, script for game day announcements, calling and faxing facts and figures to media outlets. Pompey is a native of Queens, NY that now resides in Richmond, VA.

Dr. Rodney Gaines HEAD STRENGTH & CONDITIONING COACH Dr. Rodney Gaines received all three of his professional degrees from Virginia Tech: A B.S. in Business Finance in 1989, M.S. in Health and Physical Education (Exercise Science) in 1996, and a PhD in 2001 in Education, Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Health Promotion and Education Research. Dr. Gaines is the first ever strength and conditioning coach at Virginia State University, and he has many goals for the program. The mission of the Virginia State University Strength and Conditioning Program is to help athletes develop power, speed, agility, strength, flexibility, cardiovascular strength-endurance, and spiritual development. The strength and conditioning also help athletes in the areas of sport nutrition counseling, sport psychology, and spiritual wellness.

Matt Williams HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER Matt Williams is entering his seventh year as the Head Athletic Trainer at Virginia State University. Matt completed his undergraduate studies at Emory & Henry College in 1993 and attended graduate school at Radford University from 1993-95. His resume includes tenure as Head Athletic Trainer at Saint Paul's College from 1995-2000 and Head Athletic Trainer at Brunswick Senior High School from 2000 through 2004. Matt is a native of Big Stone Gap, Va., and currently resides in Lawrenceville, Va.

2010-11 SEASON OUTLOOK

2010 CIAA Coach of the Year, James Hill looks to make it three 20+ win seasons in a row for the Lady Trojans in his fifth year. Under Hill's philosophy, VSU made an NCAA Tournament appearance, won the CIAA Eastern Division, and posted a 22-7 overall record all in the 2009-10 season. Four key Lady Trojans depart from last season's team; Leslie Phillips, Tierney Rock, and Angela Brown started for the Lady Trojans while Dominique Dunn provided defense off of the bench. In the 2010-11 season, Coach Hill will lean on the experience of 6 seniors to show 8 newcomers how to play Lady Trojan basketball. VSU will be led by 2010 All CIAA Women's Team member, 5'8 senior guard Rhon'Neisha Taylor (Nashville, TN). Taylor was ranked fifth in the CIAA scoring in 2009-10 averaging 14.3 points per game. Taylor also ranked first in steals, second in offensive rebounding, and fourth in free throw percentages. Looking to go all the way in their senior season alongside Taylor will be 5 experienced seniors. The Trojans return with experience in the middle with 6'2 Betty Appiah and 6'0 Morgan McGill's ability to rebound defensively and block shots. 5'8 Temperance Brantley, 5'9 Janelle McDowell, and 5'9 Nia Thompson rounds out this year's senior class guards. Coach Hill adds depth and perimeter scoring to his team with 8 top newcomers. The Lady Trojans will open their 2010-11 season on November 15 in a home game against Davis and Elkins College followed by the 2nd Annual VSU Chik-FilA Classic on November 26-27.
