Rogers Stadium “Home of the Trojans”

The Virginia State University football team has called Rogers Stadium home since the 1950 season.

At 13,500 seats, Rogers Stadium is the largest football stadiums in NCAA Division II and in the CIAA. In addition to football, the CIAA Track and Field Championships are held every year in Rogers Stadium.

Opened in 1950, and originally called the VSU Athletic Field, the stadium replaced Rogers Field, where the Trojans had played football since the formation of the formal team in 1902. The stadium was christened Rogers Stadium in 1951.

The stadium is named in honor of William A. Rogers (at right), the first coach of the Trojans’ football team.

VSU won the opening game in Rogers Stadium when the Trojans downed Bluefield State 25-7 on September 30, 1950. Booker Bradshaw scored the first touchdown in the history of the new stadium.

The structure, which sits at the Fourth Avenue entrance of the VSU campus, has seen several renovations over the years.

State-of-the-art lights were installed in the stadium in 2004, and new concession stands and restrooms were built in 2006.

A renovated press box and Presidential Suites opened in 2007, and new coaches’ offices, locker rooms and weight rooms opened in 2008.

In addition, the entire field is a wireless internet “hot spot,” so fans can log on to keep track of the game’s statistics.

Media Information

Press Credentials Press credentials are issued to working media only. All requests for credentials should be made to the Sports Information Director, Jason Pompey, at least 24 hours in advance of game day. Credentials may be picked up at the Athletic Office on the Virginia State University Campus prior to game day. Credentials may also be picked up on game day at the “Media Entrance” on the north end (scoreboard end) of Rogers Stadium.

Press Box Due to limited seating, only working media with proper credentials will be admitted to the press box during games. The press box is equipped with electrical outlets, telephone jacks and wireless internet. One telephone line will be provided upon completion of the game for use by media services and Sports Information staff. Jason Pompey’s cell phone number is 646-643-8510.

Press Parking Press parking is available behind Rogers Stadium along Fourth Avenue. Parking spots will be designated for press parking.

Radio/Television Broadcasts All requests for radio or television broadcasts of games must be arranged through the Sports Information Office at least one week in advance of game day. When more than one request is received for the same game, top priority will be given to television first, then to the radio station that regularly broadcasts the visiting team’s games. All arrangements for telephone lines are the responsibility of the visiting radio station.

Statistical Information Working media will be supplied press guides, line-up sheets and cumulative statistics, which will be distributed on press row prior to game time. Halftime or “quickie” statistics will be available at halftime. Final statistics will be distributed as quickly as possible after the conclusion of the game.

Player and Coach Interviews Players and coaches will be available for interviews during the week by phone or in person. Interview times for players are dependent upon the players’ academic schedules. At the conclusion of each football game, players and coaches are available for interviews after a 10-minute “cooling off” period. Post-game interviews will be conducted on the field or outside the locker rooms in Rogers Stadium.

Photo Credentials NCAA policy establishes that photographers on assignment, both print and television, will be afforded credentials. Admission to the game will be by media pass ONLY. Photographers are not permitted to shoot between the 25-yard lines and credentials must be displayed at all times. Photographers are not allowed in the team areas for any reason.

Sports Information Jason Pompey is the Sports Information Director at Virginia State University. Pompey has three years of previous sports information duties starting out as an undergraduate work-study student at Virginia Union University and as a graduate-assistant at Virginia State University. Pompey received his Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from Virginia Union University in 2009 and his Master’s degree in Sports Management from Virginia State University in 2010.

Interning for previous sports information directors such as Jim Junot at Virginia State University as well as both Tiffany D. Sykes and Tamika Duck at Virginia Union University, Pompey has worked and learned various tasks in the sports information world. With a great background, Pompey has the drive and passion to continue the trend of young successful sports information directors in the CIAA conference.

In addition to becoming the prime contact for VSU Sports Information, Pompey will be responsible for web content maintenance, publication of athletic newspapers, script for game summaries, pre and post game process, composing/editing player profiles, script for game day announcements, as well as calling and faxing facts and figures to media outlets.

Athletic Director

Peggy Davis Peggy Davis continues to enhance a proud legacy of caring and concern leadership in her eighth year as Athletic Director at Virginia State University (VSU). Davis has added a list of impressive accomplishments to her resume.

She is a two-time Hall of Fame recipient (at Virginia State University and Howard Payne University), Davis has been named Athletic Director of the Year of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) four of the last five years 2006-07, 2007-08, 2009-10 and again in 2010-2011. She was also honored with the Jannette A. Lee Administration Achievement Award in 2005 and 2010.

Under her direction, the VSU Athletics Department was honored with the Governor’s Excellence Outstanding Team Award in 2007. She has overseen numerous facility upgrades, which began in 2004 with Daniel's Gymnasium and the new playing surface. The upgrades have since continued, including the new men's and women's basketball locker rooms, the new athletics equipment storage facility, the new lighted tennis facility and the football stadium renovations to include a new practice football field, weight room, coaches offices and President's Suite.

Prior to her current position of Athletic Director, Davis served as the Women’s Head Basketball Coach, Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator. Davis has been at the helm of a VSU sports program which has won thirteen CIAA Conference Championships and eight NCAA Tournament bids in seven years. Seven Head Coaches have been awarded the CIAA Coach of the Year in their respective sports under her leadership.

Many great highlights have taken place under Davis’ athletic leadership, including the men’s program winning the C.H. Williams All-Sports Award for excellence in the men's sports programs in 2008 and 2009. The women’s sports program was awarded the Loretta Taylor AllSports Award for excellence in the women’s sports programs in 2004. In 2005 Davis started the University Trojan Athletic Club, designed to raise university funds specifically for her athletic programs.

Davis’ career at VSU has been dedicated to encouraging hard work and producing results. Her tenure as Women’s Head Basketball Coach yielded many accolades for the Lady Trojans. In 2000-2001 she guided Virginia State University to a CIAA Eastern Division crown, the last VSU women's basketball coach to do so. In 2001-02 she led the Lady Trojans to the CIAA Eastern Division title, the CIAA Tournament Champions, and a berth in the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament. It was there that the Lady Trojans advanced to the second round, marking the first NCAA Tournament win ever for a VSU Women’s Basketball Team.

During the 2002 CIAA Tournament, the Lady Trojans received the John B. McLendon Sportsmanship Award, which recognized their outstanding sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

Davis’ coaching career is decorated with several history-making events. Before coming to VSU in 1997, Davis was the head Basketball Coach at Angelo State University in San Angelo, TX. She led the ‘Belles to a regular-season and Lone Star Conference Tournament championship.

Under her direction, Angelo State also advanced to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament for the first time in school history.

Before taking the reins of the Angelo State women’s basketball program, Davis was the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at her alma mater, Howard Payne University. While at HPU, Davis guided the Yellow Jackets to a Texas Intercollegiate Association Championship. In 1996 Davis was inducted into the HPU Sports Hall of Fame.

In 2007 Davis was named to the Lone Star Conference’s 75th Anniversary Basketball Team for her achievements as a player while at Howard Payne University. In 2007, Davis was inducted into the Virginia State University Hall of Fame.

In the three conferences that Davis has served as a head coach, she has been named “Coach of the Year” in each. She has served on numerous NCAA Committees.

Davis is currently President of the CIAA Executive Committee, as well as the CIAA Athletic Director's Association. She is also member of the CIAA Tournament Committee. She holds memberships in the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

Davis also sits on the NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Tennis Committee representing the Atlantic Region. In June 2010, Davis was

The Legend of The Trojan The Trojans exhibited bravery, endurance, power and daring in their exploits to exert their supremacy in physical combat. The name “Trojans� is tied to the warriors of Virginia State, for they too, display these same qualities in defending the honor and prowess of Virginia State in the world of athletics.

Prior to October 22, 1932, the athletic teams at Virginia State were referred to either as Hilltoppers, because the school is located high upon a hill, or Statesmen after the second of the official school name. Both of these names seemed too tame and incongruous with hard work, fighting, and the hard knocks, especially those encountered by the football team.

HEAD COACH

Andrew Faison VSU FOOTBALL HEAD COACH NINTH SEASON 49-42 RECORD Coach Andrew Faison is in his ninth season as the head football coach of the Virginia State University Trojans. Faison is the 22nd head coach at Virginia State and has compiled a 49-42 record through the 2010 season. A graduate of Virginia State University, Faison earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and has completed a Master’s Degree in guidance and counseling. He is an active member in the American Football Coaches Association, the CIAA Football Coaches Association and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

After taking over for Lou Anderson prior to the 2002 season, Faison has worked hard to take VSU football to the next level. In his inaugural season (2002), he guided the Trojans to a 7-3 record and second place in the Eastern Division of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Prior to the start of the 2010 football season, Coach Faison and his Trojans were predicted to finish eighth in the CIAA. Faison guided his team to an overall record of 8-3 and to the CIAA Football Championship. Led by the 2010 CIAA Special Teams Player of the Year, kicker Justin Parker, the Trojans finished first in the Northern Division and Coach Faison was named 2010 CIAA Coach of the Year.

Having an impact on and off of the field, Faison has tremendous success coaching and graduating VSU student-athletes. During his tenure with the Trojans, Faison coached 2005 AFCA Coaches All-American Return Specialist, P.J. Berry and 2008 CIAA Rookie of the Year Taron Hampton.

Although the Trojans dropped to 5-5 in 2003, Faison rebuilt VSU into a contender the next season. Under Faison’s guidance, VSU finished at 6-4 in both 2004 and 2005.

Injuries to key players at crucial times took their toll on the Trojans in 2006 when VSU finished at 2-8, and it marked the first time a Faison-coached team finished with a losing record.

Injuries again hit the Trojans in 2007, but Faison was able to work enough magic for the Trojans to finish with a 4-6 record.

In 2009, Faison ended the season at 6-4 but guided his team to upset victories over the conference’s top three teams that entered post-season play.

Before arriving at the Land of Troy, Faison served as defensive coordinator & recruiting coordinator at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), where he helped guide the Rams to the CIAA Championship in 1999 and 2000 and CIAA Northern Division titles in 2000 and 2001.

Prior to coaching at WSSU, Faison worked for Lou Anderson at VSU. As the defensive coordinator & recruiting coordinator for the Trojans, he helped guide VSU to the championship of the CIAA’s Northern Division in 1987 and 1988.

2010 OUTLOOK

After being predicted to finish in eighth place in the CIAA, head football coach Andrew Faison guided his team to an overall record of 8-3 and to the CIAA Football Championship in 2010. The Trojans finished first in the Northern Division and coach Faison was named the 2010 CIAA Coach of the Year. This season, Faison returns with high expectations for his defending Northern Division Champs.

“Our goal is to get back to the championship game and win it this year. My staff and I have a good nucleus of student-athletes returning for the upcoming season. I expect us to play at a high level every game giving us a season full of excitement” says Faison.

Last season, VSU received great play from their special teams units, ranking a top of the CIAA Conference in several categories. 2010 CIAA Special Teams Player of the Year, former Trojan Justin Parker, finished 8 for 8 (100pct) in field goals with a long of 40 yards and ranked 2nd in PAT kicking. 2010 All-CIAA First Team member, Billy Rudd (P) returns for the Trojans and will take over all kicking duties.

Rudd ranked second in punting with a long of 57 yards, totaled 1,851 yards, and made 12 punts inside the opponent’s 20 yard line.

Seniors, Antwain Lyde (RB), Michael Griffin (OL), and Timothy Paulk (WR) will lead the Trojans offensively with their experience and leadership. 2010 All-Rookie Team member, Kenay Hawks (RB) returns in the backfield looking for a breakout second season for VSU. For a second straight season VSU ranked second in the CIAA conference in scoring defense with their opponents scoring 15.6 points per game in 2010. Seniors, Howard Spencer (CB), Larry Armstead (DB), and Jeremy Pruitt (LB) return defensively looking to lead the Trojans to another Northern Division Title.

The Trojans return thirty-three lettermen from last season’s team. Sixteen seniors will participate in their final season at Virginia State University. Thirteen starters return after nine departed the Trojan program.

PERSONNEL SUMMARY

Junior, Jarred Battle (6-2, 195 lbs.) will lead the Trojans behind center after starting all eleven games a season ago and passing for 1,583 yards. Coaches expect his awareness, overall knowledge, and his game management skills to increase in order for him to make better decisions. Looking to give Battle competition will be junior, Malik White (6-1, 208 lbs.). White showed glimpse of improvements coming out of Spring Ball and the coaches are expecting him to create competition with Battle at the quarterback position.

Three experienced running backs return for the Trojans after the offense averaged 147.27 yards per game last season. The Trojans will be led by a committee of running backs, each having the ability to carry the offensive load. Led by senior, Antwain Lyde (5-11, 205 lbs.) who led VSU with six rushing touchdowns averaging 75 yards per game, 2010 All-CIAA Rookie Team selection Kenay Hawks (5-8, 1890 lbs.), and sophomore Aaron Clark (5-8, 190 lbs.), the Trojans’ rushing attack will look to get the job done.

Hoping to improve this season is the wide receiver core. Senior, Timothy Paulk (6-0, 160 lbs.) adds explosiveness from the outside, along with his good hands and great route running ability. Returning with more experience than the rest is junior, Corey Young (6-2, 180 lbs.). Young has played since his freshmen year and continues to get better year by year. Young has the most game time experience out of this wide receiver group. The Trojans biggest target is Thaditguss Lewis (6-5, 190 lbs.), who led the Trojans with three receiving TDs (all in the red-zone). Lewis creates an advantage with his large size against most average sized opposing defensive backs. Sophomore, Dion Futch (5-7, 160 lbs.) played as a true-freshmen in 2010 and did some good things for the Trojans’ offense. Futch will be looked upon as an early play-maker replacing former Trojan wide-out, Brian Berry’s team leading all-purpose yardage.

Defensively, VSU wants to be very physical with their opponents. Their front seven has to apply pressure and win the battle at the line of scrimmage. Junior, Rashad Vesprey (6-2, 305 lbs.) returns with the most playing experience on the Trojan defensive line. When fighting off blocks from offensive lineman, Vesprey uses his hands exceptionally well ultimately getting him into the offensive backfields.

Now as a junior, Vesprey has 53 total career tackles to lead the defensive line. Bernard Morgan (6-3, 290 lbs.) started all eleven games for the Trojans in 2010. Morgan started at nose tackle in the Trojans 3 -4 defense, totaling 21 tackles (10 solo and 11 assisted) Two starters return at the outside linebackers spots, Clifton Haney (6-1, 200 lbs.) and Thomas Sykes (6-2, 225 lbs.). Haney does a good job of rushing the passer with great speed by coming off the edge. He also ranked 6th in the CIAA with 3 fumbles recovered. Sykes is the more physical line backer as he led VSU last season with 9 tackles for a loss. Inside linebackers, Jeremy Pruitt (6-2, 235 lbs.) and Bryce Willoughby (6-0, 230 lbs.) should both have great impacts on the defense. Pruitt returns as VSU’s leading tackler with 82 tackles a season ago. He also was ranked 2nd in the CIAA with 4 fumbles forced and 9th in total tackles.

The Trojan defensive secondary, coaches are looking for Howard Spencer (5-9, 180 lbs.) to continue his aggressive play and great cover skills. Spencer can pay both corner positions and also at safety.

Justin Carr (5-9, 172 lbs.) played in 10 games last season for VSU in the defensive secondary, mainly at the corner postion. Larry Armstead (6-0, 195 lbs.) will provide the physical play in the secondary starting at safety for a third straight season. Armstead is a hard-hitting safety that brings experience and leadership to the defensive side of the team.

With the departure of 2010 CIAA Specialty Player of the Year, Justin Parks due to graduation, Parker’s cousin Billy Rudd will take over as the place kicker and will continue his punting duties. Junior, Jarred Battle started all eleven games for the Trojans throwing for 1,583 total yards in 2010. He completed 125 of 233 passes scoring 10 TDs. Battle also rushed for another 6 TDs. Battle threw for 228 passing yards and made 21 completions, both were career best versus Fayetteville State in 2010.

This season, VSU plans on handing the ball off to multiple running backs after the team rushed for 1,620 total yards with 22 TDs. Senior, Antwain Lyde will lead the Trojans’ rushing attack after rushing for a team high 675 yards in 2010. Lyde rushed for 100+ yards in two games last season, versus West Virginia State and Virginia Union.

Sophomore, Kenay Hawks was named to the 2010 All-CIAA Rookie team. Hawks rushed for 88 yards on National T.V. playing in the CBS-College Sports Game of the Week versus Elizabeth City State.

The Trojans hope for an increase in production from several Trojans at the wide receiver positions, after last season’s all purpose and receiving team leader, departed the program.

Senior, Timothy Paulk had a team season-high 117 yards receiving and caught the game-winning 50 yard TD pass against Bowie State in 2010. Paulk finished last season with 28 receptions for 388 yards .

Junior, Corey Young continues to improve his route running abilities year after year improving since his freshmen season. Young recorded VSU’s longest reception of the season versus Norfolk State with a 56 yard reception and finished the game with 103 yards.

Sophomore, Thaditguss Lewis had 3 TD scores on 5 total receptions in 2010. Lewis is a key asset in the red-zone area with his 6’5 height advantage over most corners .

Trojans are looking for several big plays from two year starter Le’Mont Lewis.

Junior, Le’Mont Lewis brings stability at his position after starting the past two seasons at the tight end position for VSU. He is a hard worker on & off the field helping out on key blocks or even going out into the secondary and creating mismatches.

Lewis caught 2 passes last season for 43 yards. (12 yards versus Bowie State and 31 yards versus Elizabeth City State )

Junior, Rashad Vesprey is a strong defensive lineman that fights off offensive lineman blocks in order to get into the backfield to make the tackle.

Pruitt made a game high 17 tackles in the 2010 CIAA Championship Game versus Shaw.

Junior, Clifton Haney was a constant threat to opposing offenses last season. With his quickness and speed, Haney made 49 tackles and had 9.5 tackles for a loss of yardage.

Haney ranked sixth in the CIAA in fumbles forced with 3.

Trojans are expecting junior, Thomas Sykes to continue his physical play after making 40 tackles and recording 9 for a loss of yards. Sykes also had 2 sacks and 1 interception in 2010.

VSU ranked second in the CIAA scoring defensive category only allowing 15.6 point per game in 2010.

Their defensive secondary intercepted 12 passes ranking VSU third in the CIAA with 16 total passes intercepted.

Senior leader, Howard Spencer ranked eighth in the CIAA with 11 passes defended in 2010. Spencer returns as the tackle leader for the secondary with 43 total.

Senior, Larry Armstead is a hard hitting safety with ample playing experience in his tenure as a Trojan.

Junior, Justin Carr and sophomore, Sean Smith will play important roles in the Trojan defensive scheme.

Carr made 24 tackles with 3 defensive breakups and four passes defended. Smith made 13 tackles and had a 59 yard interception return for a TD versus Virginia Union.

Senior, Billy Rudd was named to the 2010 CIAA AllFirst Team as a punter and will take over majority of both the place kicking and punting duties for VSU in 2011.

Rudd ranked second in the CIAA in punting , totaling 1,851 and had a long of 57 yards twice versus Livingstone and versus Elizabeth City State.

Setting up the return game for VSU will be Dion Futch and Sean Smith.

Futch had 288 all purpose yardage in 2010 and led VSU in kick returns averaging 16.7 yards per game with a long of 33.

Sean Smith led in punts returned averaging 32.7 and had a long of 71 yards versus St. Paul’s.

Quarterback Jarred Battle led the Trojan attack. He threw for one touchdown and ran for two as VSU racked up 334 total yards and defeated Livingstone 30-6.

Battle, who was 15-27 for 148 yards connected with Corey Young on a ten yard strike with :25 left in the first half and the Trojans went to the break, leading 16-0. “We didn’t take them lightly,” said Battle. “They have a new coaching staff and we prepared for everything.”. Virginia State held Livingstone to 193 total yards.

The Trojans were stingy on the ground holding their guests to 45 yards, but giving up 148 yards through the air. Jeremy Pruitt led the defensive stand as he had eight tackles, four solos-four assists – on the night. “Overall we jelled pretty well,” said Pruitt. “We still have a few things to work out but we got over the opening night jitters and got the win.”

Redemption is sweet as Antwain Lyde can attest. The 5’11’ 205 lb junior running back carried 20 times for an impressive 168 yards in leading the Trojans to a 34-21 win over West Virginia State.“I knew I had to redeem myself after the first game when I had two fumbles,” said Lyde. “I wanted to come out today and showcase the skills God gave me.”When he scored on a 15-yard jaunt up the middle with 10:05 left in the game, the Trojans led 34-14 and his day of redemption was complete. “My hat’s off to him, said head coach Andrew Faison. “We stayed on him and he had a week and a half to get himself together and he did.”

Battle, in only his fourth start, again was impressive as he threw for over 100 yards for the second consecutive week and has four touchdown passes after two games.”I thought he did a good job throwing the ball,” said Faison.” A couple times, though, he threw into double coverage.”I told him if it’s not there, don’t throw it, but that will come as he matures into the position.”

Virginia State University's football team held on late in the fourth quarter to secure a 20-13 win against Chowan University in Murfreesboro, NC on Sept. 25. Justin Parker's 2nd made field-goal (19; 30), from a season long 30 yards out gave VSU a 206 lead with 3:23 remaining in the game.

“We were up against a good team,” said Faison. “I’m proud of the way our guys hung in and fought and never gave up,” he added. Young, who also had a career night yardage wise with three catches for 103 yards, dropped a couple passes earlier and said the hype of the game and excitement may have been a cause. “I may have gotten a little too anxious a couple times but the O-line was pushing hard for us the whole night and we were able to get going in the second half.”

Coach Andrew Faison and the VSU Trojans won their first northern divisional conference game with a balance attack of 168 yards passing and 153 yards rushing improving to their best start at 3-1 since the 2002 season.

The Trojans scored 17 first half points as the offense rolled early on two passing scores and a made 19 yard field-goal.

Offensively VSU used five different rushers combining for 153 yards on 40 carries. The offensive line opened up huge holes for two young Trojan running backs that had 25 of VSU's 40 rushes.

Jarred Battle’s 50-yard touchdown pass to Timothy Paulk with 1:07 left in the fourth quarter proved to be the game winner as the Virginia State Trojans came from behind to beat the Bowie State Bulldogs 16-15.

Battle (208 yards passing) shook off the effects of the earlier turnovers and quickly moved the Trojans to the 50-yardline on a 12-yard pass to Brian Berry and an 11-yard pass to Paulk (7 catches, 117 yards). On the next play, Battle again found Paulk, this time for a 50-yard bomb that gave the Trojans the lead with 1:07 left in the game. The 2-point conversion attempt failed and VSU led 16-15.

Bowie State had one more shot at getting into range for a game-winning field goal attempt, but the drive came to an end when Budd’s pass attempt was intercepted by VSU’s Alfred Ngauja and the Trojans were able to run out the clock.

With the win, Virginia State improves to 4-1 and 2-0 in the conference.

Va. State left everything on the field after a valiant late game effort fell short as the Trojans lost to visiting Fayetteville State 21-14.

With no time outs remaining and 1:26 left on the clock, the Trojans drove sixty yards in eight plays. Faced with a fourth and goal from the 10, Quarterback Jarred Battle’s pass to Thaditguss Lewis in the end zone slipped through the grip of the 6-5, 190 pound wide receiver.

Battle, 21-39 for 228 yards and one interception, connected with Clarence Sims for 18 yards, Brian Berry for 26 yards and Timothy Paulk for 16 yards to move quickly down the field on the last drive. “All of our receivers came up big for us on that drive,” said Battle.

"Fayetteville State came in real sharp,” said Trojan’s head coach Andrew Faison of the defending CIAA champs. “But we have to start playing right from the beginning of the game,” he stressed. We can’t keep waiting until the second half to get moving.”

Running a steady offense and a pesky defense, the Trojans built a 15-3 halftime advantage and held on for the win.

Virginia State, which had 321 total yards, used a good mix of passing and running to build its cushion.

Trailing 3-0 after a Devon Pike 28-yard field goal with 10:17 left in the first quarter, the Trojans set up shop at their own 47 following an Ian White interception of a Namon Jones pass. Seven plays later, Antwain Lyde scooted 12 yards around the left end for the score. Justin Parker’s point after kick gave the Trojans a lead they would not relinquish.

“We’re getting better on offense,” said Battle, “but we’ve still got some work to do in order to finish these drives.”

Virginia State punter Billy Rudd pinned the Vikings back on their own one with 4:11 to go. They stalled with 1:14 left.

The Trojans took over and ran out the clock.

LINCOLN 0, VIRGINIA STATE 42 // 10.23.10 It was everything homecoming is supposed to be. A picture perfect day, alumni returning to share memories and cheer for the home team, senior members of the football team showcasing their skills and playing well and of course a queen being crowned.

Virginia State picked up 285 total yards on the day and were in control from the time freshman running back Aaron Clark scampered into the end zone from seven yards out with 9:42 left in the first to give the Trojans the early lead.

White’s interception ignited more fireworks for the homecoming crowd on the Trojan’s next possession. From its own 43, Virginia State drove to the Lincoln six. Battle hit senior wide receiver Brian Berry twice in the drive for 39 yards.

From the six Clark again got the call and hit pay dirt as the Trojans went up 35-0.

By virtue of their 35-7 win over arch-rival Virginia Union, the Trojans (5-1; 7-2) are one win away from claiming their first ever CIAA Northern Division title.

What started out as a slugfest in front of 9,234 excited fans turned into a blowout by halftime. Virginia State scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a commanding 28-7 lead at the intermission.

Antwain Lyde rushed for 140 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns to pace the Trojans. Rahoo Walker added 63 yards on eight carries and one score. Brian Berry electrified the Trojan faithful with 81 yards on just four carries.

For the Virginia State defense, Sean Smith and Howard Spencer returned interceptions 59 and 22 yards respectively for scores. Jeremy Pruitt led with 11 tackles, followed by Justin Carr and LaQuentin Milo with seven take-downs each.

“We are very excited about this experience, said Brian Berry whose spectacular catch and run off a 54-yard reception from quarterback Jarred Battle, 4-7 for 78 yards, with 4:21 left in the first quarter, put the Trojans up 17-0. “We’ve made a statement in our last few games,” expressed Berry, of the Trojans, who have out-scored their last three opponents 111-21, “and now we are going to Durham to win a championship,” he said emphatically.

Pruitt echoed the comments of his comrades about what the victory meant. “It feels great,” he said. “I love my teammates and coaches. We bonded as a brotherhood this year and that’s what keeps us together,” he added. Walker went in seven plays later from 11 yards and the Trojans went up 31-0.

As disappointing as their 14-7 loss to the Shaw University Bears was in the CIAA championship game or how low they may have felt, the Trojans walked off the field the way they walked on the Durham County Memorial Stadium turf: They epitomized the phrase, “All for One and One for All.” “We played hard for our fans and gave them an exciting game,” said Faison. “We just didn’t give them the win they came to see.” Faison praised his defense for their gut-check effort and felt his team earned the respect they weren’t getting at the beginning of the year.

“Shaw’s defense played well and forced Jarred to hurry some passes,” said Faison. “I feel like we earned respect today, though.” Faison was honored as the CIAA coach of the year for 2010.

But he addresses it in a different manner. “I call it the coaching STAFF of the year award.” It’s no wonder his players are all selfless gentleman.

Virginia State University was founded in 1882 as the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute, making it the first fully state supported, four-year institution of higher learning for Blacks in America. Today, Virginia State University is one of Virginia’s two land-grant institutions.

The campus sits atop a rolling landscape overlooking the Appomattox River in the Chesterfield County village of Ettrick. It is accessible by Interstates 95 and 85, which intersect in adjacent Petersburg, as well as U.S. Routes 1, 301 and 460. The University is centrally located about two hours away from Washington, DC to the north, the North Carolina Triangle area to the south, the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.

VSU students live and learn on a 236-acre main campus, with more than 50 buildings, including 15 dormitories and 16 classroom buildings, and a 416-acre agricultural research facility.

Led by its 12th president, Eddie N. Moore, Jr., former Virginia State Treasurer, the University boasts healthy fiscal management and growth, with a 2007-08 operating budget of over $125 million.

The University’s academic programs include the “Bridges to Baccalaureate” program for students transferring from two-year colleges who want to major in the sciences, the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge and the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program for students planning to pursue doctoral degrees in their chosen field of study. Honors scholarships are also available to entering freshmen, including the Presidential and Provost Scholarships. In 2006, VSU inaugurated the Low Income Families With Talented Students (LIFTS) financial aid program, the first of its kind among HBCUs. LIFTS promises to meet 100 percent of a qualifying student’s financial need by providing 75 percent of a student’s need through scholarships and grants and limiting debt through student loans to 25 percent of VSU’s in-state cost of attendance over four years, regardless of state residency. Virginia State University offers 50 baccalaureate and master’s degree programs and a Certificate of Advanced Study within five schools: The School of Agriculture; The School of Business; The School of Engineering, Science and Technology; The School of Liberal Arts and Education; and The School of Graduate Studies, Research and Outreach. In 2006, Virginia State University graduated its first-ever doctoral students, who earned their Doctor of Education in Administration and Supervision. In 2005, VSU welcomed the first students to its Nursing Program. This important program was introduced to meet the pressing need for qualified nurses in the Southside Virginia region.

The School of Graduate Studies coordinates a bachelor of individualized studies degree program, a non-traditional baccalaureate program primarily for working adults. Students can pursue the degree on a full-time or part-time basis.

About Ettrick, VA In 1765, Neil Buchanan, a merchant from Scotland, established himself on a tract of land naming his plantation Ettrick Banks after Ettrick in County Selkirk in Scotland. Mr. Buchanan served on the first Committee of Safety for Chesterfield County during the American Revolution and in 1792 he was appointed a trustee by the great Commonwealth of Virginia to oversea the extension of navigation on the Appomattox River.

The Buchanans added more land and by 1795 their farm had grown to 529 acres. Ettrick Banks was a tobacco plantation. Through their association with a Scottish trading concern, the Buchan-
