Design a wall structure that has three functions serving human interaction. In the space generated, create a display for three objects: small, medium, and large. Choose an artist's work to pull your objects from.

Design a two-level upscale dining experience. Carefully consider the environment where the meal is served: it should be an experience.

Group Project: Explore the bridge between interior design and industrial design by designing a unique retail experience for customers and employees.

Design the first floor as an experimental learning environment to accommodate a number of programs. Focus on the planet and its ecosystems.

Drawing exercises with the ultimate goal of incorporating sketching into the design process as a thinking and communication tool.

WALL DESIGN FEATURING DALE CHIHULY This design explores the tensions created by contrast within the constraints of a wall. An enclosed educational side opens up to a grand gallery space balancing the subjects of science and creativity. The modular, geometric forms of the wall serve as an opposite to the organic, flowing forms of Chihuly’s work. The absence of color in the wall structure contrasts with vibrant colored glass in the art, giving the installation the primary focus.

ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA AMETHYST IN ARCHITECTURE The Ural Mountain Range located in Siberia east of St. Petersburg is one of the few places in the world where amethyst is mined. The design for this restaurant is inspired by the formation of amethyst with its crystal structure and layering. Cave-like experiences give occupants a sense of intimacy. Experimentation with hierarchy provides compression and release in a space. The staircase fractures the space, similar to the way a geode must be split to open the stone to the amethyst inside.

PROCESS The mezzanine shape is derived from a mirror image of the floorplan and inspired by the reflective qualities of amethyst.

CUISINE The chef uses molecular gastronomy to make a connection to chemistry and heighten the overall experience.

SAN FRANCISCO,CA RETAIL DESIGN 120 Coffee + Chocolate, a gourmet coffee bean and chocolate boutique, is inspired by the chemical structures of anandamide and caffeine. These chemical stimulants appear in both coffee and chocolate, sharing the same 120 degree angles within their hexagonal chemical structures. This angle shapes the interior of the space by forming distinct destination areas for each coffee and chocolate pairing. Columns shaped with the 120 degree angle, composed vertically, define the entrance experience. They serve as a visual frame for the branding wall and aid with wayfinding to influence circulation.

VIRGINIA TECH LIBERAL ARTS BUILDING PATHWAYS TO PARTICIPATION: The design of this space focuses on pathways and how they can influence circulation within an area. The new Pathways program at Virginia Tech emphasizes a flexible means of education within the university as well as a flow of ideas with multidisciplinary integration. The natural pathways created by rivers, such as the behavior of water when it hits an obstacle or the effect of erosion over time, contribute to the character of the space. Pathways are present in the design in form, material, and layout along a central axis which improves wayfinding throughout the area.

FIRST FLOOR PLAN Since flexibility in use is important in a space, the risers can function as an area for NTS lecture seating or as a critique space where they serve as a stage for the presenter.

To implement sustainable practices, the risers are constructed of local, reclaimed wood to reduce life cycle cost.

4

Although there are a few changes in flooring material, they are all on the same plane to prevent tripping and create a tolerance for error on the floor plane. The wood flooring is reclaimed wood, but Green Label approved carpeting with low VOCs is used to balance acoustics.

5

An equal amount of public and private areas in the collaboration section gives users a choice regarding where they want to work and does not discrimiate based on environ mental preferences. Seating options in the public collaboration area include mini risers, stools, and soft seating to give users more choice. Different shades of blue are used for some of the seating because blue is said to encourage focus and calm, while the complementary pale orange also used in the space gives it a subtle energy for collaboration.

All of the tables in the classroom are flip top tables with a markerboard top and the chairs and markerboard screens are all on casters to continue the pattern of flexibility in the space. Screens, whiteboards, and pin up walls throughout the space give people a choice in how they express themselves.

6

A balance between natural and artificial lighting in the collaborative space is created by the light fixture in the public collaboration area while the private area primarily utilizes the natural light from the windows. Natural light is said to help productivity and improve health and happiness of occupants.

A privacy screen from reception area defines the space and makes its use more simple and intuitive. The reception desk is sectioned into two varying heights of 29” and 42” to accommodate those in wheelchairs as well as promote varying levels of communication. The desk materials include reclaimed wood as well as a recycled glass top.

7

In terms of ergonomics, the break room includes a 42“ counter to give occupants the option to stand, since research has shown that standing has many health benefits. Additionally, there is a lower, 29” table in the area to accommodate people in wheel chairs. The space inclues more reclaimed wood flooring, recycled glass for the bar countertop and also natural light from the windows to make the space more appealing to users.
