The design included The Grand Stair, made from 4500 recycled timbers creat ing an immersive sculpt ural space t hat f ilters light and creates a n emot ive sense of t ra nsit ion f rom t he st reet to t he int imac y of t he interior It was no su r prise when it won t he prest ig ious World I nterior of t he Year at t he 2015 World Fest ival of A rch itect u re T here is somet h i ng about t he met hodolog y of t he prac t ice t hat at t ract s ar t ist ic endeavou r A much celebrated recent project wa s t he temp or a r y hou si ng for R a ndom I nter n at ion a l’s R a i n Room, a n interact ive work t hat marries ar t a nd tech nolog y w it h nat u re a nd ex perient ial engagement “It was par t of t he Jack alope ar t collect ion a nd t he Pav ilion in St K ilda is it s temporar y home,” says Rod ney. P h o t o g ra p hy PA B L O V E I G A S t y l i n g J A C K M I L E N K O V I C / A T E L I E R L A BThe requirements were high ceilings and lots of stone Through my business, Surface Gallery, I had already acquired and was storing a bundle of light and dark Zafiro Blue marble; for over a year before even purchasing the property I had never before seen this stone utilised in a project in Australia so my new home had to be the first place for it However, for me the initial drawcard for this property was the high vaulted ceiling in the living room which provided maximum impact and delivers New York loft style living, but with an Australian twist Steel doors were always a huge part of the brief and an easy way to ensure there would be abundant light in every room. I opted to design and make my own steel and fluted glass doors through my other business, Aldini, for all the internal bedrooms, bathrooms and courtyard These doors guaranteed that each space felt lighter and brighter. As such a key element much of the framework was actually built around the full height doors to ensure a flush finish with minimal clearance While this choice slowed the build process down a little I feel it has really had a beneficial influence on the final result

« “There is a real sense of open ness,” she says “We weren’t t r y ing to blu r t he lines bet ween indoor a nd out, but rat her to create a n element of cocoon ing inside. Ex pa nsive spaces call for ex pa nsive gest u res a nd t he cha nce to create somet h ing bold a nd dif ferent was ex ploited A s t he bu ild was delayed, t he desig ner a nd client relat ionsh ip g rew. “The schemes became more daring,” says Sarah Ja ne. Bet ween desig n intent a nd execut ion t he client became more confident a nd t he call was made to “ ex plore colou r” The k itchen, orig inally desig ned to be wh ite, took on a g reeny black hue w it h cabinet r y painted in Du lu x ‘Briar’ But it is in t he master bedroom where dept h of colou r really reig ns supreme. desig ners were able to employ rich ness in colou r, detail a nd elega nt layering W it h t he lav ish de G ou r nay ‘L’Eden’ wallpaper as a star t ing point t hey selected one of t he dom ina nt hues a deep blue to paint t he remainder of t he room The resu lt is dramat ic yet calm ing “We cou ld have pu lled a ny colou r f rom t he wallpaper such as och re or mustard but t he room get s a lot of light so it wou ld have become a big, beaut if u l glow ing box. I nstead we wa nted to create a calm a nd meditat ive feel,” says Sarah Ja ne

Location Most of our projects are based in Sydney’s eastern suburbs so it’s easy for us to get to a site when the builder or clients have a query. We visit each site often during the construction stage to ensure what we have designed is what is being built and to be on hand to workshop any changes that may be needed (you never really know what’s inside a wall until you open it up!)
