Style at Home contributor Karl Lohnes shares his tips for creating a welcoming guest room

The best guest rooms emulate a hotel experi ence in that they are functional, welcoming and designed for comfort Think of what a guest might need, like extra blankets, a place to stash their suitcase, and little touches, too, like water on the night table Double duty furniture like an upholstered storage bench gives you a spot for guest linens and your guest a place to sit

Guest rooms are great for overflow storage when not in use, but don’t go overboard and hog all the space! Here, the top two dresser drawers are left empty for guests, while the bottom drawers hold out of season clothes

ROOM for all

The Home Office

“I really like the idea of a multifunctional room that’s an office during the day, but serves other needs after work hours,” says designer Jacinthe Leroux She likes wall beds that, although not a new solution, are enjoying a renaissance thanks to improved models that suit all budgets and styles “Some even house super practical stor age for the duvet and pillows,” she says, adding that if you go this route, leave the centre of the room unobstructed so you don’t have to move heavy furniture to access the bed In Jacinthe’s design, she added wallpaper in the niche, so that when the bed is lowered there’s a surprise of colour and pattern that also visually acts like a headboard Additional add ons could include LED lighting or a mirror

No guest room? No problem
Designer Jacinthe Leroux’s ingenious floor plans will help you make your guests feel right at home in a space you already have.

Living Room

When you don’t have a separate extra room, guests often end up sleeping in the living room But if you frequently host visitors from out of town, it’s worth the expense to create custom solu tions to make the space more comfy Jacinthe designed a fantastic two level living room that includes a concealed bed, which rolls out from under an elevated platform “This type of layout is easier to build than it looks,” says Jacinthe “It’s the flooring that will be the biggest expense The combo sofa/bed platform can be made with rela tively inexpensive materials, such as plywood, and then you add a real mattress on top ” Another plus of this solution is that the new two level floor plan transforms the room into a multifunctional space for the homeowner on a daily basis, as the upper level makes an ideal office area or reading zone

If you don’t have adequate ceiling height for a second level or you live in a rental, a top quality sofa bed is your best friend Test it in store: Does it open and close easily? Is it comfortable to both sit on and lie down on? Add a cushy mattress topper and high quality bedding, and guests will feel cared for and comfortable

STYLING TIPS

• Cushy pillows make wooden benches and chairs extra comfy, and add pattern and colour

• Don’t be afraid to mix dish patterns Use varying shades of one colour to tie your table setting together

• Keep flowers simple, especially if you are crunched for time

Try sprigs of greenery, berries or all one type of flower

• Hang a mirror to reflect light and visually expand a small dining room

• Choose low floral arrangements for formal dinner parties

For buffet style dinners, a large pitcher full of flowers on a sideboard makes a statement

When the temperature dips, nothing beats curling up by a fire in a room that exudes coziness Melanie Hay, designer of this elegant but relaxed open concept space, shares her advice on decorating for warmth

Comforting

THOUGHTS

NO MUSS, NO FUSS This liv ing room is elegant enough for entertaining, but there’s nothing that’s too delicate, fussy or hard to clean Spills can be wiped from most sur faces; pillows are washable or easily replaced; and, with a toddler in the house, almost nothing is breakable “When you come home, you want to be able to relax, kick off your shoes, put your feet up and not have to worry about the furniture,” advises designer

SOFT & SOOTHING Earthy, natural tones and textures make a room feel instantly familiar, cozy and inviting Take your colour cues from nature cinnamon, terracotta, stone, wood, sand, mossy green, even sky blue Texture is also key to this room’s comfort: the nubby feel of the throw and rug; the comfy upholstered armchairs; the subtle veining of the coffee table’s marble top For a final touch, piles of toss cushions in a spectrum of earthy colours bring even more texture in materials like velvet, silk, cot ton, linen and wool

A COLOURFUL LIFE “Don’t be afraid to put colour on your walls I’ve come to realize there are a lot of nuances in colourful walls,” says Melanie In this case, the choice of painting the upper walls in a sophisticated linen shade with a slightly darker greige for the wainscot and woodwork raises the pro file of the trim and imparts a romantic old world feeling Says Melanie: “It also helps to bring the whole room together, even though there is a lot going on here ”

LAYERS OF MEANING Think in terms of layering Melanie tossed pillows and a nubby throw onto the sofa; devised soft but neatly proportioned treatments for the windows and sliding door; and added layers of lighting “You need overhead lighting, but shaded lamps for different areas are important, too, for task lighting and to create zones,” she says “A second chandelier over the dining table would have been too much, so we added wall sconces instead, which makes the dining area feel like its own space ”

BLUE MOOD

Is there any colour more calming than blue? We love how light blue walls evoke a far off horizon, perhaps where sea and sky meet Blue is ideal in a bedroom, of course, but we think a living room painted pale blue is the perfect place to relax with a good book Here, we’ve warmed the scene with woodsy elements and added touches of black that pop in the soft palette for the right mix of modern and serene

FULL BLOOM

Blueberry Muffin, designer Samantha Pynn’s adorable kitty, likes to sit atop the dining room’s custom console, which houses vases along with linens from Sam’s HomeSense collection The wood doors mimic the pale oak flooring to strengthen the room’s airy, open look Samantha topped the console with the same porce lain she used in the kitchen for continuity The round table (a secondhand find) is a nice coun terpoint to the square space, while the velvet upholstered bench is a deliberate departure from the rest of the palette “I felt like I was going a bit safe with all the whites and linens, so I chose a velvety coral pink,” she says “It’s a gorgeous colour and I love how the floral artwork softens it a bit ”

COLOUR PLAY

“The kitchen counters and backsplash are showstoppers!” says Samantha “The colours are just so nuanced: sand, lavender, grey and soft white And the veining is just right not too heavy and definitely not faint ” Painting the lower cabinets deep purple grey is more than a perfect complement to the veining “Keeping everything all white would have felt too light This dark colour helps anchor the space,” says Sam The cabinets, with Ð inch frames, are a modern take on a classic Shaker style door and feature brushed gold pulls purchased from an all female owned business A caned front cabinet over the fridge is a warm and textured foil to stainless steel and a nifty nod to the dining chairs “My faucet is brushed nickel because I like to mix metals ”

FINE BALANCE

“I designed new panel moulding that my friend and contractor Janos Nagy masterfully installed on the living room walls,” says Samantha “It’s actually painted MDF but looks like it’s always belonged in the building ” As well as adding depth, the moulding informed the room’s symmetrical layout Deep, comfy sofas face off across a secondhand table given new life by replating its stainless steel frame in antique brass and painting the wood top Sculptural lamps lend a bit of edge, and the plum, rose and camel cush ions lighten the presence of the teak credenza The faux linen oatmeal drapes have a subtle plum under tone that tightens the mix of colours and textures “The room is set up for entertaining, but also lounging,” says Samantha “The sofas are so comfy It’s a great space to nap or read a book ”

ROMANTIC FASHION

Samantha transformed the bedroom into a dreamy retreat with gorgeous hues, all fortified by lovely textures A zigzag rug imparts edge to the floral bedding from Sam’s collection, and the wood side table introduces an organic element The makeup vanity is an old piece she had refinished; its prettiness is played up by the pale pink mirror and lamp The tiny bath room is big on details but not too big! “Originally, I was going to go with black and white floor tiles, but they were too high contrast I’m glad I went with warm grey,” says Sam The tiled wall provides a neutral background that pattern pops against, and Sam makes the most of it “I wanted to be able to change the look of the bathroom with a different shower curtain and linens,” she says, adding that the brass and fun light bring “just a little bit of glam ”

THE ART OF LIFE

Saturated colours and a jaw dropping art collection give vibrancy to a contemporary new build

The dining area’s heirloom rug, from the owners’ previous home, informed much of the colour palette, including the chairs and the sophisticated hand dipped drapery “The rug’s pale brick colour is a nod to the room’s stronger reds and a transition to the softer corals and persimmons found in the living room,” says Beth Lowenfeld The kitchen’s energetic blue cabinetry picks up on the rug’s pattern and references Lake Ontario, which can be seen from the window
