A few years ago, I had a credit to the stationery site Minted that was about to expire. Of course, I realized this at 10 p.m. on the expiration date, so in a panic I ordered approximately 50 sheets of the first wrapping paper I saw. It turned out to be one of my best impulse purchases ever: The paper (at right) features a beautiful shibori pattern, and with the right ribbon, it works for every occasion. I’ve used it for my mom’s birthday present, friends’ wedding gifts, toys for my preteen nephew—and I always pull it out for the holidays. I even brought some to the office as inspiration when we were planning the Hanukkah wrapping story on page 72, and I’m glad I did, because it made me realize I’m dangerously low on stock. Luckily, my fellow editors had some awesome suggestions for other do-it-all gift wrap. They’ve tempted me to try something new…but I’m going to order another 50 sheets of shibori paper just in case.

This holiday movie features designer Hilary Farr in a different kind of role—as an actor! We asked her to spill some set secrets. How hard was it to memorize your lines?

It took some work! The whole point of my shows on HGTV is for me to tell it like it is in the moment—the complete opposite of a scripted film. To help, I recorded scenes so I could listen to the other actors’ lines while practicing my own.

What was the toughest part of moviemaking?

Waiting around between scenes drove me absolutely insane!

And the best part?

My dog, Suki, a 75-pound Labrador, joined me on set. She was a star among the crew.

When considering what to give, think about what you’d eat from your own pantry, says Wayne Melichar, senior director of food safety at Feeding America. You wouldn’t want anything in a swollen or rusted can, but properly stored canned food can last one to five years past its expiration date. Not bad at all!

Because many of us wear something under sweaters, they don’t get very dirty, says Patric Richardson, author of Laundry Love. “You could probably skip washing it all winter if you spot-treat stains,” he says. When a sweater smells, spritz it with vodka—seriously, it’s a deodorizer! Just make sure to give it one good cleaning before putting it away for the season. “Moths love dirty sweaters. That reindeer costume is cute, but it could be stressing out your dog or cat. “Many well-meaning people dress up their pets and don’t realize they’re suffering,” says Amanda Gagnon, a dog trainer in New York City. If yours is pulling, running away, growling or hissing, stop. Use a blingy collar or fun bandana instead: They won’t bother most pets, and they’re just as Insta-worthy! really bad!

Cats don’t always handle holiday chaos well, so create a safe space where you can spend one on one time with them. Put a pet bed in the corner of a quiet room, add toys and treats, and they’ll be good to go (or stay)

“I put everything in the dishwasher!” says Ina Garten, cookbook author and longtime Food Network star. Trust the Barefoot Contessa on this one. She’s been adding wooden utensils to her dishwasher for years, along with good knives and even delicate wine glasses. not so bad!

“The holiday table is ripe for strife—even a seemingly civil chat can easily turn into a feud,” says Diane Gottsman, author of Modern Etiquette for a Better Life. Unless you know you’re all on the same page or can discuss politics calmly, avoid the topic. And if someone else brings it up, stay neutral. “Watch your body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice,” says Gottsman. Better yet, casually change the subject. “So, what’s everyone doing for New Year’s Eve?”

Putting a lid on hot food slows the cooling process and causes the food to linger too long in the danger zone (40˚F to 140˚F). Bacteria can flourish at these temperatures, explains Nicole Papantoniou, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Kitchen Appliances & Innovation Lab. Let food come to room temp uncovered, then pack it up and refrigerate. really bad!

Iced Holiday Sugar Cookies

Ingredients

Cookies

1 roll (16.5 oz) refrigerated

Pillsbury™ Sugar Cookie Dough

¼ cup all-purpose flour

Icing 2 cups powdered sugar

¼ teaspoon vanilla

⅛ teaspoon almond extract

2 to 4 tablespoons milk

Food color, if desired

Candy sprinkles, if desired

1 Heat oven to 350°F. In large bowl, break up cookie dough; thoroughly work in flour. (DO NOT EAT RAW COOKIE DOUGH AFTER COMBINING WITH FLOUR.) Work with half of dough at a time, refrigerating remaining dough until needed.

2 On floured work surface, roll dough 1⁄4 inch thick. Cut with floured 2 1⁄2- to 3-inch holiday-shaped cookie cutters; place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Repeat with remaining dough.

3 Bake 8 to 11 minutes or until cookies are set and edges just begin to brown. Cool 2 minutes; remove from cookie sheets. Cool completely, about 20 minutes.

4 In small bowl, mix powdered sugar, vanilla and almond extract. Add enough milk until smooth and desired spreading consistency. Stir in food color until well blended. Spread on cookies; sprinkle with candy sprinkles. Let stand until icing is set, about 15 minutes. Store between sheets of waxed paper in tightly covered container.

Set up a bar outside the kitchen. This is key to keep that area clear of guests and open for prep, serving, and cleanup! Include options like fun paper straws, holiday stirrers, and dishes with cinnamon sugar for rimming glasses to make it feel special.”

See which of these popular types is right for you.

Balsam Fir Colorado Blue Spruce

Long-lasting needles with a sweet, woodsy scent make this one of the most beloved Christmas trees, especially in the Northeast.

It’s famous for its silvery blue hue, but this pick has other perks, too, like stiff branches that can hold lots of ornaments. Plus, it sheds the least of all the spruces.

Douglas Fir Scotch Pine

Since the 1920s, this Pacific Northwest native has been a sought-after Christmas tree nationwide. Dense branches and soft needles make it a favorite.

This hardy tree has a vibrant green color and hangs on to its needles even as it starts drying out—which means easy cleanup at the end of the season!

The Hunt

Choose a healthy tree by feeling the branches. Needles should be pliable and stay in place when touched. At the tree lot, ask for a fresh cut on the trunk to help the tree take in more water. And get netting for the trip home.

The Drive

Position the top of the tree over the back of your car so the branches don’t meet air resistance and break as you drive. If you weren’t able to get netting, wrap your tree tightly in a blanket or tarp before securing it.

The Setup

Put the tree in a stand large enough for its height (check the label) and with an adequate reservoir for water. Place it away from floor vents and radiators, which can make the tree dry out.

Eastern White Pine Concolor Fir

Choose this tree if you have allergies: It’s less fragrant than other trees. Just keep in mind the branches are not the best for holding heavy ornaments.

Extra-long needles, especially for a fir, and a citrusy fragrance make this tree special. Its needles have a white tint, hence its other common name: white fir.

Similar to its relative the blue spruce, this one has lean, bluish green needles that are on the softer side. The stiff branches can stand up to ornament overload.

Recycle it!

Water and Care

Make sure the bottom of the trunk is submerged in water at all times, even when the tree starts drinking less. Trees will usually guzzle water the first few days and then slow down. Check the water level regularly, for the whole season!

The Cleanup

Christmas trees are biodegradable, and many communities offer free pickup and recycling. If yours doesn’t, look for an organization that will turn your tree into mulch or wood chips. Some goat farms will even take trees as a treat for the animals!

How to String Lights

1 Buy the right amount: You’ll need at least 100 lights per vertical foot of tree. Test each set before you start decorating to make sure all the bulbs work.

2

If you’re using several strands of lights, have a multi-outlet surge protector ready—it’s not safe to plug in more than three connected strands.

3 Connect two or three sets of lights and plug them in, then string them up the middle of the tree, close to the trunk. Once you reach the top, start wrapping the lights around the branches.

4 When you run out of lights, plug in another group. String them up the middle of the tree to where you left off and continue wrapping around the branches.

Find a Great Fake

Needles

Look for ones made from polyethylene (PE). They’re usually molded using models of real trees, so they look and feel authentic. It should be tough to spot a fake from afar!

I’m team fake all day. They’re always chic, they never need to be watered or cleaned up after, and you could even get a silver one (my fave) for a look that’s both modern and nostalgic

Lights

Many faux trees come prelit. Look for LED bulbs: They last a lot longer than incandescents, prolonging the life span of the tree itself.

Branches

A tree with hinged branches, which are permanently attached to the center pole, is easiest to set up. And consider the tip count: The higher it is, the fuller and more realistic the tree will seem.

Base

Most fake trees come with one, and you’ll want to hide it. Use a skirt, a collar, or even a basket.

Q What’s the best way to build a fire?

ASet yourself up for a roaring success by arranging a pile of kindling (and a fire starter pack if you’re using one) in the center below the grate. Light that first, then place two logs on the grate parallel to each other with space between them. Add two more logs perpendicularly on top of those, creating a square. Continue stacking in this “log cabin” style—it ensures air can move around and keep the fire burning. Stoke as needed!

Q What exactly is a “cord” of wood?

AA cord is the unit of measurement for firewood, and it’s a stack that’s 4 feet tall by 4 feet deep by 8 feet long (128 cubic feet). If you’re not sure how much you’ll need, start with a half cord.

Q Why does wood have to be aged?

AWhen trees are first cut down, there’s still water in them, and wet logs don’t burn well. Aging time varies by wood type, but most firewood needs to dry out for at least six months before it’s considered “seasoned.”

Q Are artificial fire logs OK to use?

AYep—these products are an easy way to have a nice fire for a few hours without all the fuss. In general, you should burn only one at a time, though, and never add real wood on top.

Q How often should I clean my fireplace?

AHave a certified chimney sweep come once a year to clean and inspect your fireplace and chimney. Between cleanings, you can keep your fireplace tidy on your own by periodically removing the ash under the grate with a shovel. Just make sure the ash has cooled completely, and use a fireproof container (a metal bucket or even a clay flowerpot) to transport it outside to the trash. If your fireplace has glass doors, wipe them down occasionally so your flames can shine!

AThe fire needs to be fully out before you are. Separate the logs as much as possible, and once the fire burns down, use a poker to spread the ashes. Make sure there are no burning embers, then fasten the doors or screen. Also remove anything flammable near the fireplace, in case of sparks.

Create a sparkly cookie jar by filling a snow globe tumbler with glitter. Tap glitter through the hole in the bottom of the jar, filling it about a quarter of the way. With a squeeze bottle, add a solution of 70 percent glycerin (available at craft stores) and 30 percent water (distilled works best) to the glitter. Seal the hole with epoxy and let set. Glue some of the same glitter to a gift tag and tie it around the tumbler with ribbon.

FAUX BOIS COOKIES

Follow the sugar cookie and royal icing recipes on page 70, using a 3-inch round cookie cutter. Flood the cookies with white royal icing. Let set overnight, then mix a few drops of brown food coloring with a drop of vodka. Place a wood grain stencil (available at craft stores) over each cookie and use a thin paintbrush to lightly fill it in with the food coloring mixture. Let set for about 5 minutes.

2½ cups cake flour (not self-rising), plus more for dusting

1 teaspoon baking powder

¼ teaspoon salt

1. Sift the cake flour, baking powder, and salt onto a piece of parchment paper or into a medium bowl; set aside. Beat the butter and sugar in a large bowl with a mixer on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add the egg and vanilla and beat until incorporated. Reduce the mixer speed to low and beat in the flour mixture in 2 batches until just incorporated. Divide the dough in half, place each half on a piece of plastic wrap, and shape into disks. Wrap and refrigerate until firm, at least 1 hour.

2. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Working with 1 disk at a time, roll out the dough on a floured surface,

1 pound (3 ¾ cups) confectioners’ sugar, plus more if needed

2 tablespoons meringue powder

1. Whisk the confectioners’ sugar and meringue powder in a large bowl. Add the water and beat with a mixer on medium-high speed until soft peaks form, adding up to 1 more tablespoon water if necessary.

2. Divide the icing among bowls and tint with food coloring, if desired. Adjust the icing consistency as needed with more

HOW TO FLOOD

Flooding is the technique of covering cookies completely with royal icing. You’ll need thick icing for the border and thinner icing for filling.

2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature

¾ cup sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

dusting with flour as needed, until about ⅛ inch thick. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters; arrange 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. (If the dough gets too soft, return it to the refrigerator until firm.) Gather the scraps and refrigerate until firm; reroll once to cut out more cookies. Chill the cutouts 30 minutes.

3. Position racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven and preheat to 350˚F. Bake, switching the pans halfway through, until the cookies are slightly puffed and just golden, 12 to 15 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes on the baking sheets, then transfer to racks to cool completely before icing.

confectioners’ sugar or water: For piping borders, writing, or adding decorations, the icing should be thick, like Greek yogurt. For flooding and filling, the icing should be looser, like paint.

3. Lay a piece of plastic wrap on the surface of the icing until you’re ready to use it. After decorating, let the icing harden at least a few hours or overnight.

PIPE A BORDER: Fill a piping bag fitted with a small round tip with thick royal icing and pipe around the edge of each cookie. Let set for a few minutes.

FLOOD: Fill a piping bag fitted with a wider round tip with thinner icing. Pipe a generous amount inside the border of each cookie. Spread with the back of a spoon or an offset spatula and let harden.

dreidel topper

1. Wrap a box with patterned paper.

2. Cut a square of tissue paper that’s slightly smaller than the box and fold it in half twice. Set the resulting square in front of you so the single folded edge is on the left and the double folded edge is on the top. (It should open like a book; fig. a.)

3. Fold the top right corner down diagonally (fig. b), then flip the square over and do the same thing with the top left corner to create a triangle (fig. c). On the closed point of the triangle, draw a dreidel shape as shown (fig. d).

4. Cut out the dreidel shape as shown (fig. e). Unfold.

5. Repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 with smaller squares and different colors of tissue. Layer the squares, sticking them to one another and the box with glue dots.

2. Stamp the paper to spell “Happy Hanukkah,” spacing the letters out as evenly as possible in a grid pattern.

Draw the dreidel so it connects with the sides of the triangle.

Leave this point attached on both sides to keep the dreidels connected.

Mix up the sizes of gelt for a more interesting look.

1. Wrap a box with solid-color paper.

2. Trace different-size pieces of gelt onto gold cardstock, then cut out the circles slightly smaller than what you traced.

3. Dab some hot glue on the back of a piece of gelt and lay twine over it, then press a cardstock circle over the glue while it’s still hot to sandwich the twine. Repeat with more gelt, spacing the pieces about 1/4 inch apart. Continue until the twine is long enough to tie around the box.

1. Wrap boxes with patterned papers.

2. Honeycomb balls come folded flat. Draw half of a dreidel shape on the paper backing of each one, then cut them out.

1. Cut a piece of recycled white sketch paper from a roll big enough for your box.

2. Using blue watercolor paint and a 1/2-inch flat brush, paint candles on the paper in straight strokes. Vary the angles and leave enough space between the candles for flames.

3. Using gold paint and a round brush, paint a flame above each candle.

4. Let the paper dry, then wrap the box and tie gold ribbon around it in a bow.

1. Wrap a box with solid-color paper. Tie ribbon into a bow in one corner.

2. Write the gift recipient’s name in the center of a blue piece of cardstock with a silver paint pen.

3. Sprinkle confetti and sequins around the name. Cover the cardstock with a self-adhesive laminating sheet (available at office supply stores) or wide, clear packing tape. Press down firmly to remove any air bubbles.

4. Cut out a tag shape (ours measures 5 inches by 7 inches). Tie the tag to the bow with ribbon.

When Erin James and Jasper Snoek moved into this Cambridge, MA, home, every room was painted gray—the polar opposite of their style. “I’ve always been drawn to sumptuous colors and interesting wallpaper. All of my adventurousness comes out in decorating,” says Erin, a public health researcher. She and Jasper, a research scientist, worked with designer Cecilia Casagrande to liven up the house, which was built in the early 1900s but had been stripped down to the studs by a developer. Five years later, there’s not a drab wall in sight, and the home is the perfect spot for Erin, Jasper, and their 1-year-old son, Hugo, to celebrate Christmas. The richly colored walls and mix of modern and antique furniture are eye-catching any time of year, but especially during the holidays, when glass ornaments and twinkly lights add a sense of magic. “We already thought our living room was beautiful,” says Jasper, “but the first time we put up a tree, we realized the dark purple walls were made for the holidays.”

The couple went all in on aubergine, painting the built-ins and fireplace surround the same deep hue as the walls. The color is the perfect backdrop for a green velvet sofa from Arhaus and a tree trimmed in gold ribbon. They found the love seat at an antiques store and had it reupholstered in patterned yellow velvet.

To keep the drama going, Erin and Jasper went for navy Cole & Son wallpaper patterned with urns. “It’s just on one wall, but it makes a huge impact,” says Jasper. Adults aren’t the only ones who love the design: Baby Hugo likes to trace the urns with his fingers.

Although the kitchen already had a blue tile backsplash, Erin and Jasper loved their designer’s ideas for adding more color. They painted the walls Oval Room Blue by Farrow & Ball and added matching window shades. And they swapped buildergrade pendants for globes with brass hardware—an easy change that made the space feel custom.

Our home was such a blank slate, it was hard to make choices. The possibilities were endless!

Erin never imagined a dinosaur print could be sophisticated until she saw this House of Hackney wallpaper. “I like that it will grow with Hugo,” she says. Cecilia suggested dark trim (De Nimes by Farrow & Ball). “The wallpaper is the star of the room, so I wanted to frame it like art,” says the designer.

The couple loves entertaining, so a built-in bar was a must; Ann Sacks glass tiles add sparkle to the back. They reupholstered West Elm chairs in performance faux leather to make a toddler-proof seating area (kids are welcome here!) and warmed up the whole space with seagrass-like Phillip Jeffries wallpaper and fireplace logs, stored on a bookshelf from Wayfair.

when Laura and Charles Tribbett bought their loft in Chicago’s trendy Fulton Market area, the 3,300-square-foot industrial space had very few walls—and even less personality. “We bought it from a bachelor. The story is that he had a half-pipe skateboard ramp inside the apartment!” says Laura, an interior designer. She used her professional know-how to carve out a floor plan with dedicated spaces for eating, entertaining, and sleeping—all while making it a place for her growing family to thrive. (The couple has had two girls since buying the home in 2017.) “You have to get creative to make rooms with 15-foot ceilings and gigantic windows feel cozy, but we are all so happy and comfortable here,” she says.

Laura designed this spot for the girls’ growing collection of shoes and scooters. Wallpaper (the same from the living room) and trim (painted Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore) make the space look polished “even when it’s a mess,” she says. The upper shelves are sheets of melamine from The Home Depot, mounted with fun industrial brackets from Etsy.

“Charles and I both love blue, so this was an easy decision,” says Laura of the custom-color Omega cabinetry. The Kelly Wearstler pendants had to be modified with a chain because the ceiling was too high for the rods—loft problems! The metal barstools from Amazon add a pop of red, and they wipe clean, so Laura says she’s keeping them until the girls grow up.

This eating area, which is open to the kitchen and living room, has the best views in the apartment— and the minimal Mitzi chandelier is perfect because it doesn’t block the window. “When we have friends over, we make sure they get the seats facing the skyline!” Laura says.

The girls love cruising around the ottoman, from Article; it doubles as a coffee table.

The original space was so large that the Tribbetts were able to turn it into their sleeping quarters and the nursery. Laura chose dark green for the walls (Salamander by Benjamin Moore) and a navy upholstered bed from Article to make the airy room feel more intimate.

Laura, who’s obsessed with plants, fell in love with this fiddle-leaf fig pattern by Khristian A. Howell while designing her wedding invites. “Khristian decided to make it in a wallpaper, so I had to have it!” says Laura. The eye chart–inspired MN print is an homage to Minnesota, where she grew up.

Two creative DIYers prove that style trumps size in their cozy Nebraska cabin.

In the six years that Danica and Chris Gadeken spent gutting and renovating their 1,000-square-foot home near Lincoln, NE, they picked up lots of skills—but the biggest lesson they learned didn’t involve a hammer or nail gun. “I realized that walls do talk,” says Danica, “and they will tell you what style your house wants to be.” The message for this one came after the couple replaced the worn exterior siding with greenish brown board-and-batten: “The home whispered that it felt like a cabin,” Danica says, and she and Chris ran with the idea. They installed wood planks in nearly every room and chose furniture that fit with the look. The transformation is exactly the kind of project Danica dreamed about taking on when she was in design school, and it’s now the basis for her blog, Nadine Stay. “I want to show that anyone is capable of creating a beautiful home with their own two hands,” she says.

“Everyone wants tall ceilings. But I’m drawn to the warm and cozy vibe that comes with a low one,” Danica says. “And it’s easier on our utility bills!” She and Chris spend all their free time by the fireplace, which they transformed with white paint, a sanded mantel, and pine boards they stained walnut. The window treatments are drop cloths that Danica stitched into drapes.

Danica refinished the coffee table— it originally had a yellower stain.

The couple bravely started their reno with the most complicated room in the house. “It was trial by fire,” says Danica. After taking the kitchen down to the studs, they installed engineered beech flooring, IKEA cabinets, and subway tile. To create the island, Danica and Chris topped a trio of cabinets with butcher block. “Black cabinets felt risky at the time, but we love the color as much today as we did on day one,” she says.

This room shows off some of Danica’s best tricks. For the closet, she replicated the look of custom double doors by adding trim and a second handle to a solid-core bifold door. “It’s my favorite hack in the world,” she says. Her secondfavorite: painting old furniture. This dresser from Facebook Marketplace got a coat of Caviar from HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams.

The original white walls felt too sterile, so Danica and Chris spent two weeks installing 400 pieces of MDF to create wainscoting, then they painted it a mossy green (City Arboretum by Valspar). Chris swears it was worth all the effort. “I can’t imagine a better expression of our style,” he says.

every piece of artist Melissa Koby’s bold, colorful work features a sun. “It’s meant to be joyous and empowering,” she says. “Dark and moody is definitely not my vibe.” But when Melissa and her husband, Adam, first moved into their Tampa, FL, home, the kitchen was just that. “Honestly, it was a little depressing,” she says. The couple had been renting an apartment nearby, but with their careers taking off—Melissa was working on a line for World Market, and Adam, an emergency room doctor, had just finished his residency—they decided to invest in a bigger place. Their timing was impeccable. Two months after closing on the 1926 bungalow, Melissa found out she was pregnant with twins. She and Adam quickly hired their friend, designer Ann Cox, to update the space and infuse it with charm. They painted the lower cabinets blue because “I like having fun with color,” says Melissa, and they removed some of the uppers to open up the space. Then they swapped in lighter versions of pretty much everything else. “My art is an ode to hopefulness,” says Melissa. “Why should my home be any different?”
