Mos t of my de signer f riends scof f at the idea of of fering “ trendy desig n” to their clients A nd I’ll admit that t he word “ trendy ” does conju re up images of too much veined ma rble a nd shiny bra ss.
I’ve a lways felt secu re i n t he k nowledge t hat I k new my st yle, a nd d id n’t see a ny rea son to cha nge Mi x ing t he t h ings I’ve col lected a l l my li fe had a lways felt r ig ht to me A nd t hen we moved
T he new apa r tment is much sma l ler t ha n t he old house, so I pa red back , editing dow n to only the pieces I rea lly loved, thin k ing they would work . A nd they did work . Nothing looked stra nge or out of place, but the result wa s boring. Been there, done that wa s t he feeling.
Now, I’m busy f ig uring out how to create a new mi x that ’s still our st yle but f resher a nd unex pected That ’s where trends come in They tempt you to tr y a new wa ll colour or sofa st yle t hat you wou ld never have considered
My f r iends Debra a nd Ba r r y Ca mpbel l a re ma sters at t he curation of both a r t a nd f ur nit ure. You may remember the la st time we feat ured one of their homes it wa s our Ja nua r y 2016 cover stor y. If you look back at those photos, you’ll spot some fa m i lia r pieces I’ve watched how t hey ed it T hey work w ith their desig ner to f ig ure out what the space needs, a nd i f a n ex isting piece isn’t exactly r ig ht , it get s sold
W hen I hea rd they weren’t ta k ing their ova l t u lip t able to t he new apa r tment , I wondered why it ’s a timeless cla ssic, a f ter a ll. But then I saw what they did instead. T he new t able a nd cha irs a re a bet ter f it , of fer more seating , a nd t he st yle a nd mater ia ls a re f resh. I g uess t hat ’s t he key to moder n i z i ng: i njec t ions of t he u nex pec ted to ma ke you r persona l m i x feel new
A nd then we have the cha r ming cot tage in P E I , belong ing to N YC desig ner Kyle Timothy Blood a nd his husba nd, Dea n Per r y ( page 54). You mig ht wonder why we chose to feat ure
this st yle of cot tage decorating in a Trends issue. It ’s because authentic a nd old is in aga in. Kyle used restra int to ca ref ully update w it h a new Sha ker-st yle k itchen a nd h is m i x of v intage pressback cha irs a nd yellow chinoiserie fabric in the dining room We’re reusing a nd upcycling our old f ur nit ure instead of f i l ling t he ea r t h a nd t he ocea ns w it h pi les of d isposable f u r n it u re.
Back to the trends. Emma Redding ton na iled the big look s we’re seeing on t he hor i zon. Wi l l I embrace t hem a l l? No. Some of t hem, li ke t he ti led cou nters, I tr ied t he f irst time a round in 1987 I’ve lived w ith tiled counters They look g reat until the edges sta r t to chip or the g rout gets sta ined Brow n wa lls? Not if I ca n have black Flat bedding , motel-st yle? No tha n k s But I w ill tr y the Jea n Cocteau–inspired draw ings, t he pot ter y t hat look s li ke a relic f rom a d ig a nd sleek wood pa nel ling. I def in itely need a st ubby cha ir ( page 42) a nd I’m a l l i n when it comes to seag ra ss mat s ( page 92 ) t hat ca n be stitched toget her. Br i l lia nt!
I’m so impressed w it h t he trad m i x t hat A lice Grace achieved in her layered bedroom ( page 83) It look s v intage a nd of the moment at the sa me time I thin k it ’s her choice of a r t a nd the blue toile fabric aga inst the brow n wa llpaper. Don’t you?

THE ARTIST: Colleen Heslin’s a r t def ies cla ssif ication, pushing the bounda ries of pa inting. Work ing w ith tex tiles, she dyes, cuts a nd stitches to create pieces inspired in equa l mea sure by the Colour Field Pa i nt i ng movement t h i n k A g nes Ma r t i n a nd Helen Fra n kentha ler a nd A merica n quilting traditions The a r tist, who lives on traditiona l Tla’a min ter ritor y in qathet, B C , creates work that enjoys a push-pull bet ween what is of ten considered “ h ig h” a nd “ low ” a r t , ex plor ing bot h ends of t he spectr u m w it h fa scination a nd respect. The end result? Colour f ul pa intings that ex ude wa r mt h wh i le ex plor ing t he a r tistic process.
THE WORK S: Hav ing st ud ied bot h pa inting a nd photog raphy at Emily Ca rr Universit y a nd Concordia Universit y, Colleen ha s a strong understa nding of how a r t is made She applies t hese met hods to her cur rent body of work , which ma kes for a distinct v isua l la ng uage. Each piece sta r ts w ith fabric, both cot ton a nd linen ca nva s, that ’s ha nd-dyed in sma ll batches a nd hu ng to d r y. T h is develops a su r face tex t u re t hat g ives a t acti le feel to t he piece, once f inished. The nex t step is creating the for ms w ithin the work In a process that lies somewhere bet ween collage a nd cra f t, Colleen sews together dif ferent strips a nd bits of fabric to ma ke the pa inting
Her work s ex plore colou r, for m a nd su r face tex t ure. Ta ke Lifeline, for exa mple. A lter nating pin k a nd black shapes throug hout the ca nva s draw your eye to the circle in the middle, but it ’s the ora nge at the top that ma kes the work feel complete Placing something of a sur prise in a n other w ise str uct ured pat ter n adds dimension
Colleen is a lso interested in the dichotomy bet ween a r t a nd cra f t. Historica lly, the hig h a r ts f ield wa s ma le-dominated, while the cra f ts a rea wa s more a ssociated w ith women. “In contempora r y a r t, the concept holds more va lue tha n the medium,” says C ol leen “A med iu m is a mea ns of production in relation to the concept My work is a n exa mple of contempora r y plura lism, not a r t-ma le a nd cra f tfema le, because it disrega rds f i xed medium va lues

Lifeline (2020)
A r tis t C olle en H e slin.
If you look at contempor a r y pa i nt i ng , t he most i nterest i ng key ac tor s a re fem a le.” C ol leen i s for ma l ly tra i ned a s a n a r tist yet her practice of cut ting a nd sew ing each piece of fabr ic together is just a s steeped i n t he world of cra f t , nodd i ng to generations of cra f ting women who ca me before her
I love how the sea ms in her pieces a re v isible to the eye; this creates a mater ia lit y that you don’t get f rom pa inting a lone. In Collecting and Purging, for insta nce, the blue to the yellow a nd back aga in is not the f lat, slick , industria lly produced object that we’re so used to rever ing but, instead, there’s a n orga nic a nd persona l feel to the f inished piece Each shade of yellow a nd blue dif fers slig htly, which wou ld have been done at t he out set . “ Va r y i ng dye den sit y i s a n i ntent ion a l sh i f t for subt le complex it y i n my pa intings,” says Colleen. “ W hen dyeing , the deg ree of ag itation a f fects the sur face outcomes, a nd hav ing a bit of g radient tex t ure ca n help establish depth ”
Close, but never touching measures 76 by 94 inches; this sca le of pa inting wou ld’ve been ver y physica l to create. I love the sta rk contra st bet ween the pur ple a nd the red that v isua lly shock s you into engag ing w it h t he piece. W hen work i ng w it h c a nva s, t he a r tist uses a n old industr ia l sew ing machine. She enjoys the process, but it ’s a lso thoug ht-provok ing “ It ma kes me m i nd f u l of s weat shops, a nd how under va lued the labour of sew ing is g loba lly, a nd the sk ill that ’s involved,” she says “I thin k about the autonomy, dig nit y a nd leisure I’m a f forded in my workday. A ll of that is what ma kes room to develop idea s it ’s a pr iv i lege to work t h is way.”
Colleen’s ex ploration of g loba l issues gender d ispa r it ies, con su mer excess, labou r ex ploit at ion, to na me just a few while using such a minima l
la ng uage is a testa ment to the understa nding that, somet i mes, less is more. T h is a r t ist ’s abi l it y to oscillate bet ween dif ferent factions of a r t ma kes her work s beautif u l a nd compelling

When the owners of this hou se i n Toronto’s Ea st Da n for t h a rea found out they were expecting, the couple turned to Collective Studio’s Jordy Fagan a nd Alana Firestone for a kitchen reboot that would amp up storage without compromising style
HOUSE & HOME: What was this kitchen like before the renovation?
JORDY FAGAN: Our clients bought this house after a flip so, while it looked pretty on the surface, over time, flaws began to emerge The finishes were on the less ex pensive side, and not much thought was put into the overall design. There was a lot of grey and white, and it had a cookie-cutter, off-the-rack feel.
H&H: What was on your clients’ wish list?
ALANA FIRESTONE: Our clients love cooking and entertaining, and the kitchen needed to be more functional With a baby on the way, there was a push to add more storage and get everything done before the new arrival.
JF: They were specific about appliance placement, so we built two big appliance garages on either side of the range w a l l with doors that open and tuck away into the frames to revea l more cou nter space This eliminated t he con st a nt need to move sm a l l appl ia nces a rou nd a nd deal with plugs. We were a lso able to t uck a w a l k-i n pa nt r y beh i nd t he i nteg r ated f r idge.
H&H: How did you bring warmth to the contemporary aesthetic?
AF: We focused on using organic materials and adding lots of textures. The wood cabinets are stained black with the grain still visible, and we pu r posely used rounded, integrated handles for a softer look, so t hat ever y t h i ng wou ld blend i n . Then, we brought in perforated metal upper s above the range a nd reeded glass on the pantry door, and Neolith a type of sintered stone for the backsplash and counters Texture can provide so much contrast without having to use big pops of colour. The house has a really contemporary look, but it feels warm and not stark.
