We spend over a third of our lives in bed, and yet the mattresses we sleep on can spend 80 120 years in l andfill, causing ongoing harm to the environment long af ter we ’ ve stopped dreaming about them. For family owned sleep specialists A.H. Beard, that just didn’t sit right with their dream of a sustainable future Inspired by the way nature has provided ever y thing we need for a comfor table sleep, A H Beard used over 120 years ’ experience and craf tsmanship to design Australia’s first fully rec ycl able and truly sustainable mattress range. Each component of the Australian made Origins range can be returned to nature when it’s outlived its purpose: to provide you with the best qu ality sleep of your life

That’s no idle boast Each mattress designed by an A H Beard sleepsmith is optimised to provide the six essential features of Premium Sleep (see right) sleep that’s healthy, restorative and now eco friendly as well. Not only is each mattress made of breathable hypoallergenic materials for a sof t and healthy sleeping space, but the specially designed Comfor t Coils with each spring wrapped in its own sof t

fabric pocket and the revolutionar y fully rec ycl able EvoCoil suppor t system mean postural suppor t is maximised while par tner disturbance is minimised. The six essential features of Premium Sleep feature in all three tiers of the Origins range Pl anet, Popul ace and Prosperity so you know you’ll sleep better, dreaming of a sustainable future Sustainability goes fur ther than materials, and although all raw materials are sourced from sustainably cer tified and ethical businesses, the range truly shines in its commitment to suppor ting people not just in their sleeping life, but in their working life as well. “ We’re a creator of community wealth and wellbeing,” s ays A.H. Beard CEO Tony Pearson, expl aining that Australian growers, suppliers and craf tspeople are used wherever possible to suppor t local jobs and Aussie communities “Our hope is to inspire others to join us in creating mattresses that are as good for your sleep as they are for people and the pl anet,” s ays Pearson.

Truly good qu ality, Premium Sleep means a better tomorrow for you and for the pl anet. With A H Beard’s Origins range, you’ll feel the dif ference but the pl anet won’t

Ta ke it outside. From sun drenched lunches that turn into late nights to afternoons filled with generous ser ves of family, friends, and laughter, Freedom has ever ything you need to entertain in style It’s the season of entertaining at Freedom.

f eel so lucky to live in Australia, and feel that even more when I have just returned from overseas. I am a big fan of travel and exploring cities on foot you just see so much more that way plus the spike in your daily step count allows for more indulgence in the local cuisine! I always return with a phone full of images of house facades, and (weirdly) a lot of trees, tree seats and tree enclosures, plus gardens, cafes, restaurants, signage, design ateliers, art galleries and boutiques. I know how fortunate I am to love my job and to get to view exciting content constantly, and when it’s like that, your obsessions go wherever you go!

I just spent a week in San Francisco, a city of immense contrasts from extreme wealth to poverty. It is all very sobering, but I love the can do attitude in the US and the feeling that, despite everything, ambition is rewarded and respected. We could definitely harness a bit more of that here Our design aesthetic in commercial and residential design and our retail and hospitality are brilliant and we need to shout it out a bit more On that note, we recently celebrated the winners of this year ’ s Top 50 Rooms, sponsored by Winning Appliances, at the fabulous restaurant, Nour, where we enjoyed incredible food and were surrounded by Australia’s best design talent. Congratulations to the overall winners Tania Handelsmann and Gillian Khaw of Handelsmann+Khaw who took out the big award this year see page 45 for all the winners

It’s fast approaching the busy season and in full festive spirit we bring you our cover home, a classic cottage beautifully reimagined by Sally Rhys Jones for a Sydney family, page 32 It’s the ideal place to entertain and relax To match long lazier days, we have a delicious, fresh menu by Sydney based recipe developer and food stylist extraordinaire Amanda Cordony Amanda’s recipes are simple, easy to shop and prepare, and ideal for the Australian summer. I have grazed on this menu and it’s a winner! See page 74.

We have plenty of gifts for interiors lovers, plus some inspiration for a wonderful tree I love the felt cockatoos perching on our Australian Christmas tree decorated by John Verano from our partners in the Australian House & Garden collection at Myer John joined us for an epic Christmas shoot directed by our fabulous stylist, Sophie Wilson. And Kirstie Clements shares some gorgeous indulgent pieces on page 63.

Like most Australians, I love a sporting hero, and am excited to spy them in transit recent sightings include surfer Layne Beachley and former Wallaby captain John Eales but how rare is it to have a tour of an absolute legend’s home? Mick Fanning, famous for his incredible athleticism and bravery in the ocean, has shared his chic surfside headquarters recently renewed by Three Birds Renovations see page 100.

Enjoy the following pages, and we hope that the beautiful food, gift ideas and interiors inspire you for a safe, relaxing and uniquely Australian styled holiday break

H&G’ s ‘Spring Colour Carnival ’ (November) really lifted my spirits. Exploring the magic of colour gave me the confidence to reimagine my interiors and inspired me to use my holiday time to paint my children’s bedrooms some thing other than white. When it was done, each of the three kids hur tled into their bedrooms and smiled at the pinks, blues and greens now brightening up their spaces. H&G will always make me both miss and feel at home, no matter where in the world I am. It is a monthly treasure I can ’ t live without.

Browsing the Oc tober issue, I was reminded how much windows, and what can be seen through them, add to the appeal of a home Windows create living ar tworks sometimes manicured or spec tacularly landscaped; other times wild and natural but always changing. esolutely occupying space between apartment blocks, this worker’s cottage in Sydney’s inner east is more than 100 years old and the very last one left in the whole area. There’s a certain poignancy attached to this fact that’s not lost on its current owners, Elizabeth and Jonathon The couple bought the house in 2019 and, on the advice of a designer friend, engaged interior designer Sally Rhys Jones to enhance its heritage charms while lightening and contemporising its interiors.

“We loved the cottage’s sweet facade when we first saw it,” says Elizabeth, “but there were some significant issues the fact there was no driveway was almost a deal breaker Despite that, we knew the home had real potential to be enhanced with a clever, high end renovation ”

Previous owners had added an extension to the rear, but it was “heavy on the red timbers”, says Sally and those needed to go She set about delivering Elizabeth and Jonathon’s vision for their home: that the cottage’s classic elements be carried through to the new, lighter feeling open plan living space and that the materials selected be luxe in looks yet durable enough >

to stand up to anything the family’s sons Alec, 10, Sebastian, eight, and Baxter, six might throw at them. “With three very busy boys and a lively dog, we wanted a house that looks lovely but is practical,” says Elizabeth The layout of the home has been kept essentially the same, but that’s not to say there haven’t been significant changes. “We put in new doors and windows, replaced the staircase, added a polished plaster fireplace suround and took the ceiling out so we could remove its outrageous number of downlights,” says Sally From the front door, the cottage’s central hall opens to a library/sitting room on one side and a home office on the other, along with a space that serves as a TV room for the parents. Interior designer Lori Murray, of March Twice Interiors, collaborated with Sally on the furniture selection “Lori has such a wonderful eye, ” says Sally “Her pieces pull everything together ”

A sleek steel framed door one of Elizabeth and Jonathon’s key requests separates the cottage from the open plan living spaces. What was once a cavernous space now feels warm and inviting, adds Sally, thanks to the addition of details such as character giving skirting boards and architraves, joinery and an island better suited to the scale of the room “The kitchen was gutted and while we kept its layout the same, the island bench was widened and cabinetry, in a traditional profile, was teamed with benchtops and a splashback in Carrara marble ”

The kitchen was tailored to large family living, with an extra drawer style dishwasher and fridge set into the joinery Storage has been worked in under the stairs, too. “Sally and I worked closely to design in enough space for all the boys’ shoes, bags, racquets and the like,” says Elizabeth. “We also had a small laundry trough tucked into the powder room so muddy items don’t need to be carried upstairs to the laundry ” The four bedrooms are positioned upstairs, too, with the main’s textured grasscloth walls giving it a cosiness boost. Each son has a bedroom in his favourite colour, with Alec arguably the most thrilled: “Everything looks amazing!” he says (but the new pool, especially)

Exterior works were a key part of this renovation “The facade and roof are now in heritage colours,” says Elizabeth, “and we extended these colours through to the home and into the backyard.” Landscape designers

Goodmanors drew up plans for a bluestone driveway and front path, with silver pear trees alongside The icing on the cake? “People now stop as they walk by to tell us how much they love the house,” says Elizabeth > Rhys/Jones Inter ior Architecture, Mona Vale, NS W; sallyrhysjones.com .

What dif ference can a millimetre make? “A lot, when it comes to window coverings,” s ays Amelia Taylor, head of product and marketing for Wynstan “Make it easy on yourself and leave the measuring to the exper ts.” Good qu ality blinds and cur tains can and do l ast for decades, she adds Invest wisely by considering the room ’ s purpose along with your privac y and light blocking requirements It’s also good to look at the l atest technology and innovations: “ Veri shades are the newest style of window treatment on the market,” s ays Amelia “ They combine the sof tness of cur tains with the vers atility of a ver tical blind You can walk through them freely, whether they ’ re open or closed ” Motoris ation is another add on homeowners are increasingly choosing. “ There’s a lot to love about the ability to control your blinds with the press of a button or a tap on an app ”

● How you hang your cur tains can enhance the look of a room. “ To highlight a room ’ s height, it’s good to run your cur tains from just under the cornice and have them pool gently on the floor,” says Amelia.

● For the ultimate durability, seek out plantation shutters that are construc ted from a dense polymer foam This material makes them water resistant and termite proof, and of fers three times the insulation of a similar style of timber shutter “One of the great things about plantation shutters is that they can be made in any Pantone colour and come in a variety of shapes,” she adds.

urfing legend Mick Fanning has famously embraced the odd risk or two, and the breezy refresh of his light filled beachfront home on Queensland’s Gold Coast was no exception In 2022, he and his fiancée Breeana handed the keys to Three Birds Renovations and left them to elevate the dune top dwelling from shack to chic. But it was a calculated risk. Having done their research, Breeana and Mick fell in love with the laidback coastal aesthetic of Three Birds and its principals, Bonnie Hindmarsh, Lana Taylor and Erin Cayless. “They handed over full creative control and their trust,” says Lana.

Built by Mick in 2014, the three storey weatherboard home and two storey guest cottage boasted white brick walls, white floors, exposed timber beams, a spectacular recycled timber front door and even a conversation pit. But Breeana and Mick, who have a two year old son Xander, wanted to turn things up a notch

“The spaces were quite minimalist and and we wanted warmer, more inviting areas families could enjoy together,” says Breeana. “ This included a focus on entertaining areas, cubbies, lounging nooks and activity spaces. It was about brilliant style, fused with practicality ”

“We were onto a winner from the start,” adds Bonnie “As you might expect of a coastal home, there were white wal l s a n d w h ite wa s h e d t i mb e r f l o o rs , b u t to tal ly unexpected (and ver y beautiful) were the reclaimed materials mismatched timber doors, exposed beams, an intricately detailed wrought iron balustrade and recycled bricks. The house needed little renovation, just new furniture and a bit of styling to refresh it.”

In a property of this size seven bedrooms between main house and guest cottage the challenge was ensuring the right ratio of living, dining and sleeping spaces to create the ultimate holiday experience for up to 20 guests.

That was partly achieved with a fresh take on a bunk room “Mick and Breeana wanted a sort of a bedroom living area combo for visiting families,” says Lana “Everyone needs space to retreat to on a weekend away, and this arrangement has serious slumber party vibes.” Mick generously sacrificed his trophy room for something more practical, with three double beds, two in separate nooks with curtains for privacy, which transform into daybeds for lounging and watching TV.

>

THIS IS THE LIFE

There are fun and functional spaces for all ages and interests,” says Breeana, who adores the conversation pit on the lower level But Mick sacrificing his trophy room for the new cubby, or multipurpose room, could prove the most winning move “It’s such a brilliant and whimsical retreat when we have friends over, ” she says “ There’s space for everyone and any mood ”

With its double recycled timber doors and massive mirror, the entry on the bottom level evokes a day spa feel But then you go from calming to party time with a massive all weather covered deck, cleverly zoned. Four hanging cane chairs are flanked by a generous dining table on one side and a conversation pit on the other, with a table tennis table behind that Beside that is a yoga room with sauna On the middle level, living and dining areas open to a massive deck with daybeds, while a white brick kitchen boasts a recycled timber ser ver y that connects to the deck on two sides, and a butler’s pantry A dark and moody wine room, with recycled timber joinery and brick wall, a media room (Mick’s favourite space) and that multipurpose kids’ room complete that floor.

The top level is a true retreat, accommodating a balcony with 180 degree beach views Also on this floor is the resort style main bedroom suite, which includes its own sitting area. The main bathroom, dazzling in Moroccan style handcrafted tiles, is hidden behind a recycled timber door; another bedroom occupies a mezzanine loft

While the existing white on white scheme made the house feel crisp and fresh, it needed some softer elements to make it feel more inviting. The Three Birds team solved that with soft furnishings and comfortable, textural

furniture. “We introduced lots of earthy accents, with cream and rust tones for contrast,” says Bonnie Texture, essential in a coastal home, is celebrated in bouclé sofas, jute rugs, sheer linen curtains and plush cushions Alabaster sconces and pendants wash rooms in soft light.

The Three Birds trio also played with scale to create more intimacy in the generous spaces, with oversized pieces throughout, such as the humungous sofa complete with washable slip covers, of course in the media room, the perfect chunky piece for the whole crowd to gather, kick back and watch a movie “Its modular design meant we could create a giant U shape to create plenty of seating,” says Erin.

The couple’s act of faith paid off big time, with Breeana in tears when she first saw the transformation after a months long absence “With its warm pops of colour, the nooks that have been turned into functional and inviting spaces, the art and the decor, it embraces all the elements of what a welcoming home means to us, ” she says. > Thre e B ird s R e n o v a t i o n s , S ydn e y, NS W; thre eb ird s re n o vat i on s c o m Thi s p ro p e r t y i s a v a il abl e to re nt a s h oli d ay a c c o mm o d a t i o n . incredible home, but it was cr ying out for texture and visual interest.”

Occupying the top two floors of a small block of seven apartments built in 2008, the spacious two bedroom unit was purchased six years ago by a pair of empty nesters who had downsized from a sprawling family home nearby. “We fell in love with the apartment’s location, its bright and airy feel, and the magical beach views,” says the owner “Waking up to the sunrise over the water, with the Norfolk pine trees that line the promenade in the foreground, is just incredible.”

Even so, they identified a few areas for improvement “The layout was not as conducive to entertaining as we would have liked and did little to maximise the views. Upstairs, the main bedroom and ensuite felt cramped,” they say “We wanted to create views from every room and give the apartment a more modern, light, welcoming and beach luxe feel ”

Using the existing travertine f l o o r o n t h e l o w e r l e v e l a s a s t a r t i n g p o i n t , M i c h a e l introduced a restrained palette of pale oak, creamy marble, warm white and buffed plasterwork to create the sophisticated feel t h e c o u p l e w e r e a f t e r , w i t h V groove panelled walls adding a coastal edge

From there, he set about reworking the layout on the lower level, removing several non structural walls to improve the connection between the entry, kitchen and ma i n l iv i ng /d i n i ng s p a c e s T h i s al s o al lowe d fo r uninterrupted sightlines from one end of the apartment to the other, with beach views at one end and district views at the other.

A no frills staircase beside the entry that led to the upper level was replaced with a beautiful, sculptural design with oak treads and an open balustrade wall that lets in the light. “The staircase is in a central spot between the entry, living and dining area so we wanted to give it some gravitas and create more of a sense of arrival,” says Michael “The new design also allowed us to relocate the laundry from the kitchen to under the stairs, which is more practical for the owners. ”

S

The kitchen itself is now a highly functional area with more prep surfaces and streamlined joiner y that doesn’t detract from the apartment’s flow “We elongated the kitchen and brought it closer to the dining room to improve the interaction between the two spaces, and so the cook can enjoy sea views while they’re at work,” says Michael. Curved end cabinetry adds softness a n d re fe re n c e s t h e u n u s u a l c e i l i n g i n t h e m a i n bedroom upstairs “We also replaced a sliding window overlooking the barbecue terrace with a hydraulic awning to create a proper servery for entertaining.”

Thanks to the apartment’s top floor location, Michael was able to run a flue through the roof and install a three sided gas fire in the living r o o m . “ T h e w e a t h e r i s v e r y present up here, with belting rain and high winds at times, and having the fireplace creates a cosy spot where you can bunker down with a glass of wine and watch it roll past,” he says

Upstairs in the main bedroom suite, the cramped feeling created by the existing cur ved ceiling proved a trickier challenge to solve “We explored a few different o p t i o n s , a l l w i t h t h e g o a l o f enhancing the sense of space, connecting the ensuite with the outlook, and making the curve less of a constraint and more of a sculptural feature,” says Michael

The solution involved opening up the bathroom with a splayed wall that provides privacy while allowing the owners to enjoy clear views over the treetops while relaxing in the bath Meanwhile, the portion of the room where the ceiling curve is lowest has been optimised with new built in joinery.

“Gentle moves, all of them, but together they make the space feel less like an apartment, and more like a h o m e , ” s a y s M i c h a e l A n d t h e o w n e r s c o u l d n ’ t agree more. “ The beautiful ambience, the softening curves, the view being in this apartment is just good for your soul We feel incredibly grateful to call it home,” she says > C a d e n c e & C o, Te r re y Hill s , NS W; c a d e n c e an d c o.c o m .au .

Photographs on shelves of Krista’s grandparents

here were three semi detached California bungalows for sale on this quiet street in Sydney’s north when interior designer Krista Collard and her husband Ben were searching for a family home in 2015. They all had their charms, but it was this one the one not professionally styled or staged that immediately caught Krista’s eye “It was unassuming from the front, but the rear of the house, where the kitchen, dining and living area were located, had the most incredible north easterly light,” she says “The house was well built in solid brick and had a beautiful outdoor area. With just two bedrooms and one bathroom, it was too small for our future needs, but I could see that with some work it had the potential to be a great family home. I was sketching out plans in my mind before we’d even finished the walk through ”

Krista, Ben and Ben’s children Toby, now 15, and Macy, 12 lived in the house as it was for the next few years, installing a pool out the back and updating the bathroom in 2018 By 2020, with the children fast outgrowing their shared bedroom and the too small kitchen seriously beginning to grate, the couple decided it was high time for an extensive renovation

The plan was to add a second storey that would accommodate three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a work from home space for Ben and a retreat for the children Downstairs, the bathroom and existing bedrooms would be retained, with one of the bedrooms converted into an expansive home office/second living area, and the children’s bunkroom to be used as a guestroom. As for the remainder of the original part of the house, that would be gutted to make way for a spacious new kitchen, butler’s pantry and laundry, along with a living and dining area that open onto a cosy entertaining deck complete with outdoor fireplace and built in barbecue.

While a contemporary box out the back is the norm for California bungalow extensions, that wasn’t the direction Krista and Ben chose to follow “We really wanted to bring the charm of the original house into the addition,” she says “At the same time, we wanted it to have the feel of a luxe hotel suite, with beautiful and timeless finishes and a mix of open and airy spaces where we could connect as well as private little spaces to escape for ‘ me time’. I’d call it a ‘vacation every day’ vibe.” >

H O U S E S H G

Sustainability also mattered. “We were prepared to spend on quality finishes that would last,” says Krista. “If we ever sell, we’d hope that whoever has it next won’t feel they have to remove everything and start over ”

To meet the brief she’d set for herself, Krista specified wainscoting on the walls, decorative cornices and oak chevron floor in the new addition that speak to the history of the house In the kitchen very much the heart of the home for this family of passionate cooks a richly veined marble splashback and benchtops, brass fixtures and rich, blue black joinery feel warm, inviting and luxurious.

Meanwhile, the home’s three bathrooms are elevated to the status of ultimate pampering zones, with a freestanding bathtub, marble lined walls and art “It was important to me to give the bathrooms personality and make them spaces where you can truly relax,” says Krista.

A stay at a boutique hotel in Barcelona in 2017 was the inspiration for the main bedroom. “It was light and open, yet managed to feel cosy and cocooning, with a fireplace and quirky custom light fixtures I set out to recreate that with neutral colours, layers of fabrics, bold artworks and a Surrealism inspired pendant ”

When it came to the children’s bedrooms, Krista played it smart and took her cues from their hobbies and interests. “ Toby is passionate about aeroplanes and surfing, and he gave the gorgeous grey wave wallpaper his instant stamp of approval,” she says. “Macy loves bright, vibrant colours and enjoys reading, so we kept her room light and fun, with a lovely built in bench seat by the window where she can relax with a book They’re thrilled to finally have their own rooms ”

And they’re not the only ones who are happy with the results of this renovation “It’s a great all seasons house,” says Krista. “In summer we can open up the doors, swim in the pool, get the barbecue going and sit outside by the fire and in winter, we can light the fireplace inside, toast marshmallows and cosy up to watch a movie together It has everything we need and more ” > Kr i sta C oll ard Inte r iors , Ch a t s w oo d , NS W; (02) 9188 7765 o r k r i sta c oll ard d e s ig n s c o m D u c k e r C o n st r u c t i o n s , War r i e w oo d , NS W; 0404 04 9 680.

o r the owner of this four bedroom bungalow on Sydney’s Lower North Shore, designer Jennie Cadman of Periwinkle Interiors, her navy sitting room is a treasured place “Not until I renovated this home did I realise this colour had such a powerful impact on me, ” says Jennie And, like a classic outfit, this residence is just the right fit for her, her husband and their four children, aged between two and 12.

In 2018, the family were living just down the road They had recently completed a renovation, but the home they had still wasn’t quite big enough for their growing family. So when this property came on the market, Jennie and her husband jumped at the chance “It had great bones high ceilings, huge bedrooms and it was mainly on a single level with a generous backyard,” she says Thoughtful previous owners had harnessed precious attic space for a bedroom and a family room too.

Less appealing was the dark and awkward floor plan in the 1990s addition, with a bedroom at the back and a laundry beside it “Both overlooked the garden, when that should have been the living area, ” says Jennie “ There was no bench space in the kitchen, either I was making school lunches on top of the stove.”

In 2019, the couple approached architect Adam Hampton of Hampton Architecture to make the house flow better They asked him to design a new extension with a living area overlooking the backyard, to relocate the wayward bedroom, and to create an ensuite for the eldest child, who had outgrown sharing a bathroom.

Today, the extension forms part of an open plan kitchen/dining/ living space that spans almost the entire left side of the house The sitting room sits between the open plan and the entry; to the right of the entry is the main bedroom suite and family bathroom. The children’s bedrooms overlook the backyard. Upstairs, a study and the family room are tucked under the pitched roof >

“The kitchen is the centrepiece, with a new living room that connects to the backyard,” says Adam “Strikingly, the addition sports a pitched roofline, echoing the form of the front facade. “We wanted the height,” says Jennie. “At about 4 metres at its highest point, it makes the room feel far larger, especially with the skylights ”

Instead of a fridge, Jennie opted for a cool room a 1 4x1 1 metre insulated space with shelves behind glass “It’s better than a fridge we can just dump our groceries in there rather than unpacking straight away, ” says Jennie, who also eschewed high cupboards. “I’m not tall and wanted everything below bench height ”

In the dining area, at the opposite end of the open plan space from the living zone, Adam added french doors that open to a deck overlooking the front garden and pool, with a sitting area tucked neatly underneath To bring the outdoors in elsewhere, windows in the children’s bedrooms were enlarged and the attic level family room gained a balcony Lastly, the generous main bedroom was reconfigured to increase the size of both the ensuite and walk in wardrobe.

Jennie’s handiwork begins with that beautiful navy blue The colour is seen at its best in the sitting room, where it appears in artworks and some of the soft furnishings Pops of red and orange, such as the Knoll ‘Womb’ chair in the sitting room and patchwork kilim in the dining room, provide the perfect amount of punch “The formal and informal spaces are designed to be in contrast,” says Jennie “The casual living room is bright and airy, while the sitting room is darker and cosier.”

Texture is key, with a linen modular sofa, linen curtains, timber floors, tongue and groove joinery, a concrete plinth and a marble coffee table in the family room Smooth marble features in the main bathroom and dolomite was selected for the kitchen benchtop and splashback. There, too, walnut veneer contrasts with the brass finish on the rangehood and a curved island.

She adds: “I love everything about the home, but my favourite room would have to be the sitting room It’s so cosy and cocooning ” That bold navy sets a course for a new and exciting future > Per iwinkle Inter iors, Sydn ey, NS W; @per iw inkl e inter iors. Between the living area and kitchen, steel framed doors can be closed off when a bit of separation is needed.

“ They limit the noise, yet you can still see everything,” says Jennie Tongue and groove joinery hides the TV and in progress craft Both front and back gardens get regular workouts, facilitated by the pool, basketball hoop and expanses of lawn

he owners of this property had waited a long time to begin the process of creating their forever home. They bought the residence on Sydney’s Upper North Shore in 2005, when their two children were small, attracted by the generously sized block and its existing stand of mature eucalypts

After living in the house for many years, they were ready to commit to an update in early 2020 and then Covid hit. Undaunted, they pressed on, engaging Melissa Koch to design the interiors as well as help navigate the trials and tribulations of a knock down rebuild project during such unprecedented times.

H G H O U S E S

The owners opted for a traditional design, built by Homestead Home Builders. “They wanted a tailored and timeless house that was practical and comfortable for the whole family,” says Melissa.

With their young children now teenagers, separate zones topped the list of priorities The new four bedroom house is spread over two levels, with multiple dedicated spaces for entertaining, including a ground floor games room and a media room on the first floor.

Outside, a covered entertaining deck with an outdoor kitchen and fire pit adjoins a pool and a garden designed by Edwina Stuart “The home office on the first floor was an important addition so many more people are working from home these days,” says Melissa. >

Ease of entertaining was high on the wish list for this family They wanted a home that was suitable for hosting Christmas lunch and frequent family gatherings Their wish duly granted, the owners say, “We adore the various zones that we now have because they enable our family and friends to come together, but they also provide a separate space for each age group ”

Melissa came highly recommended, having been introduced to the owners by mutual friends. “Designing a home is an intimate process and understanding the needs, rituals and behaviours of the residents gives us a better idea of how we can best curate a space for them,” says Melissa “ That initial connection even if it’s six degrees of separation makes the process easier ”

As the mother of twins herself, Melissa is well versed in the robust requirements for easy family living. For this family, which includes pet dog Jaffa, she focused on using natural, sturdy finishes such as stained oak flooring, wool carpets and rugs, tactile bouclé upholstery, metal and stone finishes and wall panelling The result is a cosy yet enduring atmosphere. “Each material is robust, easy to clean or patinates gracefully with age and wear, ” she explains

As enthusiastic entertainers, the owners welcomed the concept of a games room close to the open plan living and dining area and kitchen, and leading to the outdoor space. “The design intent was to make this room playful and fun, and for it to have an ele gant connection to the living area, ” says Melissa The billiard table, with its blue grey felt top, was custom made in Melbourne and resembles a piece of furniture “The art is whimsical, and in each corner there are bar tables and stools that encourage mingling,” she adds. And when teenage gatherings are underway, the parents can retreat to the ‘dog free’ sitting room to relax in front of the fire

This home exudes elegance thanks to its cool grey and white palette, with accent colours changing from room to room. “The generous >

proportions of the house meant we needed to layer furnishings, art and textures to help make each space feel cosier,” says Melissa The formal living room has a glam persona with its cerused oak bar and Art Deco mirror, marble coffee table, crystal chandelier and velvet and silk fabrics. By contrast, the media room has a relaxed vibe, with a Slim Aarons artwork and Mid Century inspired furniture

Having seen images of Melissa’s own home, the owners were keen to replicate some of its features, such as the herringbone oak flooring, wall panelling and light fixtures. The selection of lamps and light fittings in particular are a delight “They are little jewels that really set the character of each room, ” they say

While the build took place at a difficult time, the owners were excited to finally be creating their family home. “ They adapted with grace while the building landscape was changing day to day,” says Melissa. “They lifted my spirits as we muddled our way through together ” Meli ssa Ko c h Inte r iors , S y d n e y, NS W; m eli s s a k o c hinte r i o rs c o m Ho m e ste a d Ho m e Buil d e rs , Kelly v ill e , NS W; homesteadhomes.com.au. interior refresh with an old friend – was the perfect way for this Melbourne homeowner to begin a new life phase.

he proportions and charms of Victorian architecture had always appealed to the owner of this circa 1900 family home in bayside Melbourne. So, while the property needed work, from the moment she saw its d i s t i n c t ive a rc h e d w i n d o w s a n d su n drenched living areas, she knew this was the home for her.

More than a decade ago, the homeowner engaged Maggie Fulton, director of JAM Interiors, to complete an extensive renovation and fit out o f t h e p r o p e r t y S o pleased was she with the r e s u l t t h a t i n 2 0 2 1 , the owner approached Maggie again for her next interior refresh. “ M y l i f e s t y l e h a d c h a n g e d , ” s a y s t h e owner “My children had grown up and moved out, so I was ready to live in more sophisticated su r ro u n d i ng s I st i l l wa nte d to b e able to relax without too much ceremony, but it was important to me to have a h o m e f i l l e d w i t h beautiful fabrics, quality furnishings and decor with lasting appeal.” T h a n k s t o t h e i r p r e v i o u s p r o j e c t , Maggie already had a good idea of the owner ’ s preferences, as well as th e way l i g ht m ove d through the rooms and how the floor plan functioned The owner says her main goal was to reinvigorate the spaces using the furnishings she already had, but also invited Maggie to push her to let go of things that were past their use by date Works undertaken included installing new solid timber parquetry flooring, adding new carpet, replacing windows in the living area, painting walls, updating the kitchen and refurbishing an upstairs bathroom

In the kitchen, the footprint was retained and a new, updated feel was achieved via polyurethane cabinetry in

Dulux Domino; the benchtop was replaced with Elba marble and pendant lights by Emac & Lawton installed above the kitchen bench. Natural stone also appears in the bathroom, with Bianca Carrara marble hexagonal tiles selected to match that on the vanity

In the living areas, new furnishings meld with existing pieces The old sofas and chairs were reupholstered, with new rugs and a trestle based custom made American oak dining table added Two Davinci wicker dining chairs from Domo were paired with e x i s t i n g C h i p p e n d a l e style chairs reupholstered in Litani Blues fabric by Alice Sergeant Textiles

C o m p l e m e n t i n g t h e sofa are cushions using hand blocked American t e x t i l e s f r o m R a o u l Textiles, Carolina Irving and a Kushann ikat print

A kilim by Behruz Studio further enlivens the room.

Maggie says that having the trust and commitment of the homeowner allowed h e r to e n su re that a ny of those ‘surprises’ that c a n c r o p u p d u r i n g a renovation process could b e h a n d l e d w i t h o u t d r a m a s u c h a s t h e discovery of a beautiful, cur ved fireplace in th e m a i n b e d r o o m , w h i c h was simply refurbished and reinstated

“The makeover turned out even better than I could have imagined,” says the owner “I think one of my favourite spaces would have to be the family room, where the original arched windows take centrestage The newly arranged artworks have really transformed the whole area I also love the sitting room at the front of the house the antique French mirror is an amazing focal point and the blue and white furnishings feel fresh and cosy at the same time. It’s so inviting, immediately draws people in ” What more could you ask of a forever home? >

A showy front garden that makes the most of spectacular views, a tranquil back garden to retreat to... The owners of this Sydney home have it all.

Red and yellow kangaroo paw, lomandras, native rosemar y (Westringia ‘Grey Box’) and pretty yellow buttons (Chr ysocephalum apiculatum) are some of the hardy species used for the stunning roof garden at this home in Sydney ’ s east. An existing Murraya paniculata hedge (far lef t) was pruned to direc t the eye to the harbour in the distance; Grevillea ‘Moonlight’ fills a planter on the garden’s opposite boundar y

itting pretty in Sydney’s east, this home has a captivating double identity. With hints of a lookout tower at the front, it offers sweeping coastal views, yet it’s a genuinely private property, with a family friendly yard out the back.

Completed in 2019, the garden, designed by Melissa Wilson Landscape Architects and installed by Formed Gardens, was part of a new build project by MASQ Architects “The home was built for a professional couple with school age children,” says Ben Longbottom of Formed Gardens. “For the landscaping, they wanted something bold, full of interesting planting and forms It needed to complement the architecture and provide a retreat for the family to enjoy.”

Journeying through the garden is a delight that starts at the street entrance, where native pigface (Carpobrotus glaucescens) and trailing rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis ‘Prostratus’) cascade over the edges of planters above, creating a moment to pause before stepping inside

At the top of the stairs, horizontal steppers invite visitors into the ‘infinity’ garden, which stretches across the roof of the garage. “It’s both arrival courtyard and viewing platform,” says Ben “Plants cover the entire structure to create a dynamic aspect for the home, which has district and harbour views.”

Carpobrotus ‘Aussie Rambler ’ trails of f the roof planter, forming cur tains of wine coloured foliage over the window.

Neatly clipped mounds of silver y tree germander (Teucrium f ruticans) contrast with the lime green leaves of Lomandra

Since it’s a roof garden, the plant palette needed to be visually interesting and low maintenance, as well as tolerant of full sun and shallow soil. Native rosemary (Westringia ‘Grey Box’), a species with silvery foliage and a naturally clumping habit, brings texture to the space and is paired with strappy leaved Lomandra ‘Lime Tuff ’ and ‘Blue Ridge’ for contrast. Kangaroo paw (Anigozanthos ‘Big Red’ and ‘ Yellow G e m ’ ) , c re ep i ng thy m e ( T h ymu s ‘ P i n k C hi ntz ’ ) and yellow buttons (Chr ysocephalum apilculatum) provide pops of seasonal colour.

While the rooftop garden engages with the wider landscape, helping settle the new home into its surroundings, the back garden is more insular Yes, there’s continuity in the overall aesthetic, but leisure i s th e de sig n fo cu s h e re : a law n to play o n , a n entertaining zone and, of course, the pool.

An existing stand of wild date palm (Phoenix reclinata) provided some privacy in the pool area, but Ben and his team filled in the gaps with weeping l i l ly p i l ly ( Waterh ou se a fl oribun d a ‘ Swe e p e r ’ ) . Surrounding the pool are a series of raised beds, some featuring imperial bromeliads (Alcantarea imperialis ‘Rubra’) under planted with no mow grass (Zoysia tenuifolia) like ruby crowns showcased on cushions of emerald velvet. Hardy native pigface (Carpobrotus glaucescens) and Mediterranean spurge (Euphorbia wulfenii) are abundantly planted nearby for additional texture and colour poolside

Of course, there were challenges along the way such as bad weather, drainage issues, sharing the site simultaneously with multiple trades, protecting all finishes and managing difficult access “Materials had to be either craned in or heaved up in buckets from the street,” says Ben. “Thankfully long reach truck cranes meant the bulk of the soils were delivered in This allowed landscape works to be sequenced around the final stages of building works ”

A garden in full bloom is a sight to behold, so adding fragrant plants to the mix enhances the glorious sensor y experience, writes Ta m m y Hu y n h .

There’s something uniquely pleasurable in the sweet or spicy aroma of a scented flower awakening the senses Including such blooms in the garden, especially in outdoor dining zones or adjacent seating areas, allows you to immerse yourself in nature’s gorgeous gif ts Here are five of the best per fumed flowers for summer.

G A R D E N I A ( G A R D E N I A S P P. )

A wonder ful choice as a feature plant, hedge or potted specimen The waxy, white or cream flowers are intoxicating and usually last 6 8 weeks before fading When not in bloom, the glossy green foliage is an attractive year round feature Plant in a sunny spot, with protection from af ternoon sun, and ensure the soil is well draining. G. ‘Florida’ (pictured) is the most popular form, growing into a 1x1 metre rounded shrub, G ‘Magnifica’ is the tallest variety at 2x1 5 metres and produces extra large flowers and leaves For smaller varieties, look for G. ‘Grandiflora Star ’ and G. ‘Radicans’.

M A D A G A S C A R J A S M I N E

( S T E P H A N O T I S F L O R I B U N D A )

This evergreen climber can grow up to about 6 metres tall and 2 metres wide, and is ideal for training over an arbour or pergola, up a trellis or cascading over a handing basket From spring to autumn, clusters of small, starr y white blooms adorn the vines Its intense scent with sharp, spicy undertones is highly prized for wedding bouquets and per fumes Native to Madagascar, parts of Africa and Asia, it is sensitive to frost and prefers part shade with well drained soil

A N G E L’ S T R U M P E T ( B RUG M A N S I A S P P.)

Large, sweetly scented trumpet shaped blooms in shades of yellow, orange, red, pink and white The fragrance is intense in the evening, luring pollinating moths This medium shrub or small tree is easy to grow, but requires protection from frosts Morning sun is ideal, with shelter from af ternoon sun. Remove suckers from the base to maintain its arborescent habit The plant is toxic, so take care around kids and pets

F R A N G I PA N I ( P L U M E R I A S P P. )

As hardy as it is pretty, this deciduous tree earns a place in any garden with its wonder fully per fumed pinwheel shaped flowers Available in the classic white and yellow combo (Plumeria rubra var acutifolia), it can also be found in red, pink, apricot, yellow and violet Grows best in warm climates, but can flourish in cooler areas if given frost protection Choose a spot in full sun and well drained soil Drought tolerant once established

L A V E N D E R ( L A VA N D U L A S P P. )

A classic perennial with fragrant purple flower spikes and aromatic leaves Native to the Mediterranean, so it loves areas with hot, dr y summers. English lavender (L angustifolia) flowers in midsummer and is ideal for cool regions, tolerating frost once established French lavender (L dentata) flowers throughout the year and copes with mild humidity Italian lavender (L stoechas) has distinctive ‘bunny ear ’ petals on top of the floral spike, and blooms are available in lavender, pink or white Lavenders love full sun with well draining, alkaline soil #

How much rainfall have you had this year? If, like many Australians, your answer to that question is “ a lot”, you might be keen to discover how just how much of a soaking your garden has received For a durable measuring device with markings that won’t discolour or fade, look to the Cr ystal Rain Gauge ($120, below), which can measure up to 200mm of rainfall without emptying cr ystalraingauge com au
