FLOOD 08

ARTS COURSES WILL BE OFFERED AS PLANNED FOR THE FALL SEMESTER

corridor

The University of Iowa will be back in business in the fall, and that will include the departments most affected by the flooding: the School of Music, Theater Department and School of Art and Art History, all of which are located next to the Iowa River on the arts campus. IOWA CITY

University of Iowa President Sally Mason noted, "This university is known for its commitment to the arts, and we will honor that commitment to the fullest." Among the buildings closest to the river are the UI Art Building and Art Building West. John Scott, summer director of the School of Art and Art History, said that no classes or courses had been canceled for the summer, and there are no plans to cancel any courses for the fall.

vueonline.com • vuecv.com

Some of the school's facilities have been harder hit than others -- particularly the photography, ceramics, metalsmithing and sculpture studios, which were under 6 or 7 feet of water. Those studios will not be available in the fall, and the first floor of Art Building West will also not be available until recovery and repair work is completed. Classes and administrative offices will be moved to other buildings on campus, Scott said, and the school is currently identifying suitable space for the affected studio areas. Scott said no other details are available at this time. "We are already planning for the fall, while recovery gets under way," he said. The Division of Performing Arts has also been hit by flooding, particularly the School of Music and the Department of Theatre Arts.

Conditions are not yet known in the Theatre Building; it is fairly certain that Clapp Recital Hall and the Voxman Music Building will have to be closed in the fall. Currently, the division staff is housed in Halsey Hall with the Department of Dance. Their primary mission this summer is to identify locations on and around the UI campus for classes that have been displaced by the flood damage. Kayt Conrad, director of operations for the division, said, "There is much to be grateful for. We were able to save much of our costume collection, many of our musical instruments and the majority of our technology from the floodwaters.

"Ensuring the continuity of our academic missions in Theatre Arts and the School of Music is our highest priority," Conrad added. "As of today, no classes in the Division of Performing Arts have been canceled, and there are no plans to cancel any classes due to flooding. Scheduling staff in theater and music are working on relocating fall classes, performances and recitals, a process that will take several weeks to complete. The Dance Department was largely unaffected by flooding and will continue classes as usual in Halsey Hall. "We plan to have a full schedule of School of Music, Theatre Arts and Dance events posted on departmental Web sites and on the ArtsIowa Calendar in August. We ask students to check ISIS for information on classes that have been relocated from arts campus buildings." The School of Art and Art History and the Division of Performing Arts are academic units of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

No changes needed to 'I Love You, You're Perfect Now Change' 2008 HEARTLAND FESTIVAL SERIES.

T

he opening night performance of "I Love You, You're Perfect . Now Change" had audience members roaring with laughter within the first 30 seconds of the show. The heartwarming and hilarious musical was performed at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Center for the Arts and is part of UWP's 2008 Heartland Festival Series.

The musical is a series of short skits and catchy songs performed by six actors playing the roles of several different characters. The musical takes on the truths and myths behind "the relationship" by using humor and heart, portraying all too familiar situations in dating and marriage. Russ and Joan Schnepper are Platteville natives and long-time fans of the Heartland Festival. When Joan caught her breath from laughing she said, "The actors have to play such a variety of characters and their excellent performance showed how much talent is in the cast. The show really flows, especially with the lively music. I highly recommend seeing this performance." The cast included Paul Helm, Kelsey Klug, Marcy Russell, Abbey Schultz, Aaron Sitrick and Jason Slattery.

"This show has such a strong ensemble," UWP theater professor Ann Farrelly said. "They kept everyone laughing - I was extremely impressed with the overall performance." Heartland Festival actors Jay Cullen and Ryan Bartcher, who star in the next show to open, "Frog and Toad,"attended "I Love You" to support their fellow Heartland performers. "This was precisely and expertly performed," Cullen said. "It's wonderfully hilarious and really makes you laugh out loud," Bartscher added. Remaining performances will be held June 28 and 29; July 5, 6, 12, 16, 18, 26, 30; and Aug. 1. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. except for the June 29 and July 16 performances, which start at 2 p.m. at 2 p.m. Preshow dinners will be served on July 12 and 18.

The workshop offers teaching artists opportunities to know the purpose and components of arts-integrated instructional residencies, and to examine and apply a five-step process for planning artsintegrated instructional residencies for students. Artists who complete the training and subsequent residency proposal will be placed in a five-day school-paid residency for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 academic year. After completing this two-year program, ‘graduates’ will be acknowledged in publications of the Iowa Arts Council and the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center at the University of Northern Iowa.

Ticket prices are $17 for adults and $9 for children under 18 and UWP students with I.D. Dinner theater prices are $25 for adults and $17 for children under 18 and UWP students with I.D.

Caleb Engstrom is a singer-songwriter from Iowa City who has been working hard to find his place, to speak to an audience of both visual and aural interest. Generally using an acoustic guitar to create songs that capture elements of alt. country and intelligent 60ʼs pop song craft, Engstrom has presented over two hundred shows in the past three years. 2007 marked the release of A Mountain or a Bird, and, an assemblage of songs “featuring mellow folk with heartfelt melodies, spare beauty and surprising turns” (NPR). The past few years have led him to share stages with some of his musical mentors and contemporaries, most notably, Phil Evelrum, Jose Gonzalez, Dave Bazan, and Bon Iver. River & the Tributaries are based out of their hometown of Dubuque, Iowa, where they formed in the spring of 2005. Band members River and Jacson Breitbach, Bethann Gavin, Scott Gratton, Erin Hedley, and Griffen Harris spent their early years in classical training, and have since gained experience in many different styles. Their multi-instrumental backgrounds provide a unique touch. Between the six of them they play acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drum set, violin, hand drums, mandolin, various percussion, bass guitar, keyboards, upright bass, piano, trumpet, flute, cello, and whatever else they find sitting around. River, Scott, Bethann, Jac, Erin, and Griffen frequently switch instruments to produce an attention grabbing show that features each memberʼs talent vocally and instrumentally. The end result is an infectious form of estrogen doused, multi-instrumental eclectic rock that wandered off the beaten path. More info at myspace.com/riverandthetributaries MICHAEL MAAS:: KUNI’S STUDIO ONE – JULY 28, 7 P.M. Producer and studio owner, singer-songwriter and multiinstrumentalist, Mike Maas is involved in every aspect of music production. After many years of songwriting, performing and studio session work, he has opened his own recording facility, "Studio 17." He has taken his music around the world with the Cedar Creek Band and the eclectic band Black Sheep. Today, with dozens of radio, television and CD production credits, Mike performs with several musical groups and has been a regular cast member and the resident songwriter at Liars Holographic Radio Theatre since the show opened in 1997.

WHY GOOD PEOPLE DO

BADTHINGS In-depth, thought-provoking, illuminating By William Timothy Lukeman

Jungian psychologist Hollis turns the whole why-bad-things-happen-togood-people question around and asks, instead, why good people often do such horrible things. Exploring the notion of the Shadow, Jung's term to describe the hidden aspects of ourselves. Synopses & Review

VUE PICK

The title might lead a casual reader to dismiss this as just one more lightweight self-help book - but that's not the case, not in the least! As with Hollis' earlier books, it's a psychologically & philosophically rich examination of the human soul, offering no easy answers, no magic solutions, no simplistic aphorisms in place of real insight. If you truly want to understand your life & its choices, then you have to be willing to do some difficult & often painful emotional work. And that's something few of us are eager to do. Which leads us to the question: do you want to grow, to become more fully conscious, to strive towards wholeness? If so, you'll have to discard protective illusions, stop expecting someone else to solve everything for you, and apply an almost ruthless honesty to yourself. You won't like a lot of what you see in that dark mirror, and you'll try to fend it off, explain it away ... but that's our mistake. If we can acknowledge the part we unconsciously play in our own suffering, we may well learn how to alleviate some of it & live with what remains.

At the very least, it will make you think long & hard about yourself Mind you, Hollis never promises an end to suffering, a wondrous makeover that does away with every ugly scar & thought! He has too much respect for the tragic view of human life to hold up an illusion of perfect happiness, no matter how golden & comforting. He's very clear on this: what we need isn't happiness, but meaning. And to find it, we have to be willing to grapple with the Shadow, all that we fear & despise about ourselves, all that we reject & often project onto others. I feel that this is one of Hollis' finest books, in that it possesses an extra depth & richness of insight. It made me look at my own life more deeply than I have in the past, and encouraged me to confront many of its uncomfortable & frightening aspects. At the very least, it will make you think long & hard about yourself. At the most, it may set you forth upon a fascinating & revealing journey. Most highly recommended!

THE LAST

LECTURE by Randy Pausch and Jeffrey Zaslow Hardcover

Synopsis: "We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand." - Randy Pausch

A lot of professors give talks titled "The Last Lecture." Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can't help but mull the same question: What wisdom would we impart to t When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave - "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams"- wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have…and you may find one day that you have less than you think"). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living. In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.

Review: - By Sherry Lange One of the traditions of 'the college experience' at many schools is the 'last lecture' - a beloved professor sums up a lifetime of scholarship and teaching as if he/she were heading out the door for the last time. It's the kind of tweed-jacket-withelbow-patches talk that may or may not impart useful knowledge and lasting inspiration, but almost surely gives all present some warm and fuzzy feelings. But a 'last lecture' by Randy Pausch was different in every possible way. The professor of Computer Science, Human Computer Interaction, and Design

new releases and reviews

at Carnegie Mellon University was just 46, and this really was his last lecture - he was dying. And dying fast. In the summer of 2006, Pausch had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a ferociously efficient killer. Only 4% of its victims are alive five years after diagnosis. Most die much faster. Think months, not years. Pausch fought back. Surgery. Chemo. Progress. But in August of 2007, the cancer returned - and now it had metastasized to his liver and spleen. The new prognosis: 3-6 months of relative health, then a quick dispatch to the grave, leaving behind a wife and three little kids. On September 18, 2007 - less than a month later - Randy Pausch gave his last lecture. No one would have faulted him for launching a blast about desperately seizing opportunities in an irrational universe. Instead, Pausch delivered a laugh-filled session of teaching stories about going after your childhood dreams and helping others achieve theirs and enjoying every moment in your life - even the ones that break your heart. Pausch's philosophy, in brief: 'We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.' The lecture was taped, and slapped up on YouTube. Jeffrey Zaslow wrote about it in The Wall Street Journal, and news shows made Pausch 'person of the week' - and soon Pausch had a book deal reported to be worth almost $7 million. Few expected him to be alive when it was published. On February 19, I interviewed Randy Pausch for Reader's Digest. To the surprise of many - including Pausch - he was still his recognizable, energetic self.

“hearing what other people say about you and your work is crucial to success and happiness. Because this is what you get: 'a feedback loop for life.” And now we have the book. It's two books, really, because it reads one way with the author still among us and will surely read differently when 'The Last Lecture' is like the The Butterfly and the Diving Bell - the record of a dead man, talking. The first book invites your support and gives you a wake-up call. The second, I suspect, is also a wake-up call but, between the lines, reminds you that even happiness can't save you from death. Somewhere in between - in the quiet space where a book really lives - is a document that accomplishes a lot in 200 pages. It's about paying attention to what you think is important When asked how he got tenure early, Pausch replied, 'Call me at my office at 10 o'clock on Friday night and I'll tell you') and working hard and listening really well. It's easy to miss that last part of that in the emotion and the stories surrounding this book, but Pausch argues that hearing what other people say about you and your work is crucial to success and happiness. Because this is what you get: 'a feedback loop for life.' So, if you must, shed your tears for Randy Pausch. Imagine what it would be like if you or your dearest loved one drew the card called pancreatic cancer. And then put dying aside, and get on with your dreams. Amazing how many you can achieve if you want them badly enough.

ARTS FESTIVAL

We invite you to join us for the 30th annual College Hill Arts Festival, which will be held July 18-19, 2008 on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa at the shady corner of College and 23rd Streets. In 2005, and again in 2007, the College Hill Arts Festival was named to Sunshine Artist magazine’s list of ‘100 Best Fine Arts & Design Shows’ in the United States. Also, the Cedar Valley Tourism Bureaus named the Festival the 2006 Event of the Year.

By NICHOLAS BERGIN The Hawkeye

sing the recent flooding as inspiration, a local group of young filmmakers hope hoping preserve the trials and devastation of the 2008 flood on high-definition DVD to share with audiences around the world. While helping sandbag last week in downtown Burlington and at Strawberry Point north of town, inspiration struck Reid Bangert. He thought those sitting at home reading about or watching the flood on the news were not getting the full impact of the havoc it wreaked.

Bangert decided he wants to share the experience of having a river swallow an entire town - such as Oakville or Gulfport - and the aftermath of the worst flood in area history.

The group plans to film and conduct interviews in the area for two weeks using two Sony highdefinition cameras. Then, they will spend about a month editing footage.

30 years after its original release, Carnegie-Stout Public Library in Dubuque will show F.I.S.T. on Thursday, July 31, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. in the 3rd Floor Auditorium.

The filmmakers have most of the equipment they will need for the project but still have a few "little things" to acquire, such as microphones, reflectors and lights, Bangert said.

Filming for the documentary began Monday with Bangert's father, Kurt Bangert, flying him and a camera over the flooded area in a J3 Cub.

The 19-year-old aspiring filmmaker has been looking for a serious film project. He is on summer break from Iowa State University where he is studying journalism. This project has an Aug. 14 deadline, at which time Bangert plans to switch schools and attend the College of Santa Fe in New Mexico, where he plans to study cinema. In the meantime, he has recruited long-time friends Jeremy Hollenbeck and Heather Mennen, both of Burlington, to assist in making the documentary.

THURSDAY, JULY 31.08, IN THE THIRD FLOOR AUDITORIUM::

Bangert said he is self-financing the project and plans to donate 15 percent to 20 percent of any profits to flood victims.

The documentary producers also are looking for "home movie" footage and pictures of flooding to incorporate into the film.

"I think people, at least in the broader scale of America and the Midwest, don't really know what is going on. I just want to open people's eyes to the devastation that occurred," Bangert said, while sitting in the film crews' makeshift base of operations, a meeting room in Bangert Computers where Bangert works.

30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF MOVIE AT CARNEGIE-STOUT PUBLIC LIBRARY Were you in the production crew or an extra on the set of Sylvester Stallone's movie F.I.S.T.? Have you always heard about F.I.S.T., the major motion picture made in Dubuque in 1977, but never had the opportunity to see it on the big screen?

Out of disaster often comes inspiration.

news

Admission and snacks are free, and open discussion will be encouraged after the show. Sylvester Stallone stars in this hard-hitting, boldly ambitious drama that powerfully reveals a significant slice of American history. As union leader Johnny Kovak, Stallone's performance confirmed his stature as one of Hollywood's hottest stars. Closely paralleling history, the film follows the rise and fall of Kovak, from his beginnings as an idealistic blue-collar worker to

his final position as head of one of the country's most powerful unions: the Federation of Inter-State Truckers. But there are no unscarred heroes in this world. To achieve his dream of justice for the working man, Kovak must accept the muscle of organized crime.

VUE PICK

Ultimately, F.I.S.T. is a story of idealism corrupted and betrayed. Oscar winner Rod Steiger (1967 Best Actor, In the Heat of the Night), Peter Boyle and Brian Dennehy are featured in the fine supporting cast. Directed by Norman Jewison, with Laszlo Kovac's darkly moody cinematography and a heroic score by Rocky composer Bill Conti, F.I.S.T. is "a particularly American kind of epic" . FOR MORE INFORMATION For more information, please call the Library Information Desk at 563-589-4225.

............................................................... Bangert said he planned to secure the camera to a wing of the plane and run a line to an LCD monitor inside the cabin to provide a view of the footage during the flight. Following the completion of the film, the filmmakers plan to have an initial showing in Burlington before submitting it to several film festivals. They plan to sell DVD copies on the Internet.

NATIVE SON BRINGS HOLLYWOOD TO IOWA THANKS TO NEW LAW Iowa Legislature’s House File 892 signed into law last year by Governor Chet Culver. TV and video projects

Bangert said he would like to see the film picked up by a national distribution company, but sees a limited Midwest distribution as more realistic. A Web site for the project will be created in the next couple weeks, Bangert added. FOR MORE INFORMATION or to contribute to the project, contact Bangert at (319) 750-2557.

ROBERT SHERMAN MARK HEADLEY riter, director, producer, Robert Sherman, formerly from Clear Lake, Iowa and his partner, producer Mark Headley, both form Los Angeles are taking advantage of the Iowa Legislature’s House File 892 signed into law last year by Governor Chet Culver.

W

The Iowa Film, Television and Video Project Promotion Program signed by the Governor on May 17th, 2007 opened the door to Iowa for moviemakers by assisting and encouraging film,

Sherman, who came back to Iowa last year to visit his family, found out about the act and suggested to Headley that this was definitely something worth looking into. They have over thirty years experience apiece in all aspects of film production. Headley said that a few other states have similar programs and none as attractive as what Iowa offers. Because of the promotion act they are scouting for potential investors in Iowa to help them bring productions to Iowa as soon as possible. California has no such laws for Hollywood filmmakers so the word is getting out that Iowa is a good place for their movies to be made

Bright, inquisitive and generous, Kit is a natural born leader. But her happy childhood is abruptly interrupted when her father loses his car dealership and must leave Cincinnati to look for work. Kit and her mother Margaret are left to manage on their own, growing vegetables, selling eggs and even taking in an assortment of boarders including an itinerant magician, a vivacious dance instructor on the prowl for a husband and a zany mobile librarian. When a crime spree sweeps Cincinnati, all signs point to the local hobo camp where Will and Countee live with a group of their impoverished companions. Kit, who always has her antennae out for a good news story, convinces her new friends to take her to see the hobo camp for herself and writes an article that creates a sympathetic portrait of the camp’s residents. But when Kitâs mother and their boarders become the latest victims in a string of robberies, Kitâs loyalties are tested. Will is accused of the crimes and, with all of their savings gone, the Kittredges face losing their house to foreclosure. Determined to recover the stolen money and believing Will is innocent, Kit recruits her friends Ruthie and Stirling to help her track down the real culprit. Together they uncover a plot that goes far beyond Cincinnati! STARRING: Abigail Breslin, Stanley Tucci, Glenne Headly, Jane Krakowski and Julia Ormond. MPAA Rating: G
