Ephraim was drawn to unusual places, unafraid to approach anyone who offered that special shot. Subjects who wore an
unusual hat or maybe had a prominent tattoo found themselves at the end of his lens. Sometimes it was simply a person with an interesting face.

Separately, the faces and places are ordinary. Together, they are a work of art stemming from an idea that came to him on New Year’s Eve 2009. “I was listening to a radio program about a group of photographers who spent an entire year shooting a random scene every evening at precisely 7:15,” Ephraim said. “While finding the idea intriguing, I decided to add a twist. I would photograph a different person every single day for an entire year. If they could make this kind of commitment, why couldnʼt I?” Photography is a hobby for the 25-year-old with a degree in graphic arts from Iowa State University. So he tried to keep the project as simple as possible. “The idea was to photograph people in random encounters, on sidewalks, in storefronts, walking to their cars, carrying schoolbooks or performing daily chores. As the project progressed I targeted personalities and places that would open a small window into the lives of everyday people of the Midwest.”
He discovered the problem early on. His short hair and clean-shaven face werenʼt exactly the picture of a starving artist.
“For whatever reason, people respond better to a man with longer hair and an unshaven face. It’s apparently ‘artsy,’” he said.
or crossing the street to watch from afar. Sometimes it took 10 minutes, other times it could last a half-hour.” For the entire year, Scott Ephraim lived and breathed his photography project. Juggling an 8-to-5 job at West Music in Coralville, a girlfriend, friends and family proved difficult. “I was deathly afraid of becoming sick throughout the entire year,” he said. “I didnʼt want a bout of sickness to pull me out of the race. As can be expected, I eventually suffered a bout of flu, and for two to three weeks I felt utterly debilitated. I wasnʼt about to let 10 months of work go down the drain, so I forged on, not missing a single day of my work.”
By New Yearʼs Eve 2010, he had reached his goal. He now hopes to find a publisher whoʼs
interested in turning the project into a book.
“Nothing stopped him,” said his girlfriend, Leah Hughes. “Not the weather, a bad day at work, H1N1, Christmas or even me begging him to leave the camera in the car while we went to the grocery store. He was determined to finish.” Co-worker Rebecca Pierson was impressed with Scott Ephraimʼs dedication to the project, and relished hearing the interesting stories of his photographic adventures. She also was inspired by the photos he took. “Scott captured an array of people,” she said. “I especially love the ones where he photographed people in their own environment. It really shows who they are.” “For some, the photo opportunity was a polite favor to this young photographer,” added Steve Ephraim. “For most, it was an opportunity to reveal something about themselves. Many invited Scott into their homes, apartments or places of work to see another dimension to themselves. He succeeded in crossing barriers of culture, race and class, daring to approach anyone who caught his attention. Now that heʼs gathered the raw ingredients, I am excited to see the finished product.”
At times, people didnʼt take Ephraim seriously. Some simply said no. Some were skeptical.
Others didn’t want to be bothered.
“I came across a lot of wonderful, interesting people, but at the same I came across some not-so-friendly individuals,” he said. Still, many said yes, some even inviting Ephraim into their homes for a more personal glimpse of their lives. “Somehow he seemed to sense who would most likely say yes,” said his dad, Steve Ephraim, of Cedar Falls, who occasionally found himself on an impromptu photo shoot with his son. “During these moments Iʼd try to leave him space to carry out his mission, darting inside a storefront

10 arts&entertainment ‘Moon Over Buffalo’ PRESENTED BY CFCT
CEDAR FALLS — The Cedar Falls Community Theatre will present the comedy “Moon Over Buffalo” today through Sunday, Feb. 28, at the Oster Regent Theatre, First and Main streets. In the madcap comedy tradition of “Lend Me a Tenor,” the hilarious “Moon Over Buffalo” by Ken Ludwig centers on George and Charlotte Hay, fading stars of the 1950's. On the brink of a disastrous split up, they receive word that they might have one last shot at stardom: Frank Capra is coming to town to see their matinee, and if he likes what he sees, he might cast them in his latest big movie. Unfortunately for George and Charlotte, everything that could go wrong does go wrong. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for full-time students. Gift certificates and special group rates are available for this comedy. For tickets, call the box office at (319) 277-5283 between 1 and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, visit www.osterregent.org.
Mount Mercy plans art exhibit UNI PROFESSOR’S WORK TO BE FEATURED
CEDAR RAPIDS — Mount Mercy College will present the work of artist Kenneth Hall during a special exhibit, “Between Here and There: Painting and the Unseen,” Feb. 12 through March 3 in the Janalyn Hanson White Gallery on the Mount Mercy campus. Hall, an assistant professor of art at the University of Northern Iowa, creates work that is playful and subversive. He uses paintings to put the viewer in a place of temporary suspension, allowing them to enter a world that is both mysterious and dreamlike. The Janalyn Hanson White Gallery is in lower McAuley Hall on the Mount Mercy College campus. The gallery is open 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday or by appointment. For more information, call the Lundy Desk at (319) 363-8213.

WATERLOO — The Phelps Youth Pavilion has a new exhibit, “Fiesta! A Mexican Celebration,” on display through July 31. Visitors also can learn the Mexican hat dance, raise the Mexican flag to hear the country’s national anthem, create a jaguar mask, view real artifacts from Mexico and more. Guided tours of this new, interactive exhibit are available Tuesday through Friday. Day care/preschool groups can receive free tours, thanks to the support of Cedar Valley’s Promise. BEETLEMANIA In January, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers confiscated a live, jeweled beetle that a woman was wearing as an “accessory” on her sweater as she crossed into Brownsville, Texas, from Mexico. Blue jewels were glued onto the beetle’s back, which had been painted gold, and the mobile brooch was tethered by a gold chain attached to a safety pin. Even though the woman orally “declared” the animal, the beetle was confiscated because she had not completed the bureau’s PPQ Form 526, which is necessary to bring insects into the country. Reportedly, such jewelry is not that rare in Mexico. A spokesperson for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals was, of course, appalled.
DAVENPORT — The man who added the catchphrase “git-r-done” to the American lexicon is coming to the Quad Cities. Dan Whitney, better known as Larry the Cable Guy, has made a name for himself as one of America’s top comedians. He has received a Billboard Top Comedy Tour award and for the second year in a row has been named to the Forbes Celebrity 100, which lists the hottest and most successful people in the entertainment industry. He’ll bring his hillbilly funny bone to the Adler Theatre for 5 and 8 p.m. performances Saturday, March 20. Tickets are $43.75 and are available at the Adler Theatre box office, all Ticketmaster locations, Ticketmaster.com or by phone at (800) 745-3000. For more information, visit adlertheatre.com or outbackconcerts.com.
LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS M After the New York Post reported in December on the 175-square-foot Manhattan apartment recently purchased by Christopher Prokop and his wife (for $150,000, with $800 monthly in maintenance fees), residents of even smaller Manhattan digs told the Post they were unimpressed. For instance, Felice Cohen, 39, rents a 90-square-foot apartment ($700) with a loft bed, but admits that she must sit sideways on the toilet. Freelance event-planner Eddie Rabon rents a 55-square-foot palace for $800 a month (closer to midtown than Cohen’s). He can almost touch both side walls simultaneously and cannot easily turn around while showering. Commented the residents, respectively: “We love it,” “I love it,” and “It’s fantastic.” M The recent Christmas bonus season was rough at the RF Brookes pizzaingredient factory in Wigston, England. Workers received only gift containers of pudding (“plum duffs”) with a use-by date of March 2009 but accompanied by a letter from management assuring them that food technicians had certified the product as safe to eat in January 2010. After numerous employee complaints, the company apologized and offered fresh plum duffs. LEAST COMPETENT DEER A seven-point buck was found dead in Viroqua, Wis., in November, apparently after losing a head-butting contest with a concrete-statue buck. Ramming contests are common during mating season, and the concrete buck was about the same size as the dead one but weighs about three times as much.
