PERFORMANCE SET

CEDAR FALLS — The James & Meryl Hearst Center for the Arts will present a puppet theater workshop and performance from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30. Workshop participants will learn how to make shadow puppets and a simple stage from the Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre Company. Following the workshop, attendees will join in the fun with the Eulenspiegel members for an impromptu group performance. The Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre Company will perform its adaptation of the classic fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood.” Eulenspiegel’s adaptation of this beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tale is brought to life by seven lively puppets and a wacky storyteller. The puppets are miniature Bohemian marionettes. The set is an extra-large pop-up storybook and comes to life right before the audience’s eyes. Participants should be prepared to stay for the entire event. Cost is $12 for one adult and one child and $5 for each additional person. For more information, call (319) 273-8641. Cedar Rapids Museum of Art show “LESS IS MORE: THE VOGEL GIFT OF MINIMAL AND CONCEPTUAL ART”

SHOWCASE WILL EXPLORE HISTORY OF TELEPHONES CEDAR RAPIDS — The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art will present “Less is More: The Vogel Gift of Minimal and Conceptual Art,” opening Saturday, Jan. 23. Admission will be free all day and there will be activities for children of all ages from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. as a part of Family Fun Day: The Building Blocks of Art. WATERLOO — The Grout Museum District, 503 South St., will open a new exhibit, “Watson, Can You Hear Me Now,” on Wednesday, Jan. 27. The exhibit will remain on display until March 2011.

“Less is More” tells the extraordinary story of Herbert Vogel, a New York postal clerk, and his wife, Dorothy Vogel, a Brooklyn librarian, who together managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in history with very modest means. The couple chose to live on Dorothy’s salary and devote Herb’s entire salary to purchasing art. After collecting for more than 30 years, they amassed a collection of more than 4,000 pieces.

The exhibit takes a look at the evolution and history of communication based on the Grout Museum District’s collection of telephones and other communication devices. Fascinating facts about the history of the telephone will be showcased, including the first words spoken over the telephone line to today’s cryptic texting.

After a generous donation to the National Gallery, they decided to share the rest of their collection with the nation. In 2008, the Vogels began distributing 50 works of art to one museum in each of the 50 states as a part of their Fifty Works for Fifty States initiative. The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art was chosen for their gift to Iowa, and this is the first time their donation has been displayed.

Artifacts, photographs and other archival materials will demonstrate how quickly times have changed since 1876, when Alexander Graham Bell patented his invention.

Family Fun Day activities will include color chromatography, creating shapes with the “shape-shifter” suit and a chance to “draw” line drawings all over the Carnegie Library using purple masking tape, inspired by “Harold and the Purple Crayon.” There also will be a station devoted to the number 50, in honor of the Vogel initiative.

For more information, call (319) 234-6357.

“Less is More: The Vogel Gift of Minimal and Conceptual Art” will be on display through May 2.

FOR MORE INFORMATION, visit www.crma.org or call (319) 366-7503. The CRMA is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, with extended hours and free general admission from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. PULSE: ISSUE 034 | 0

Brad Myers releases new CD BY BRENT JOHNSON CEDAR FALLS — I wasn’t sure what to think when I sat down with Brad Myers. A lot of musicians have the desire to be good, but many fall short for one reason or another. But when we met at a local coffee shop, Myers’ casual vibe offered no frills or gimmicks — what you see is what you get. He offers no excuses about his passion. “I don't really know what's next for me and my music, but I am excited to go where it leads. To be honest, I'm a bit scared of the unknown,” Myers said. The songwriter grew up in a home surrounded by music and started playing guitar when he was 13. He wrote his first song at the age of 15. “I was so shy to play my original tunes because it was like opening my heart to everyone. I eventually got past that and now sing about my dreams and struggles,” he said. “I write songs that are very honest about what's going on in my life. It is my means of expression, and my hope is that my music somehow inspires you with whatever chapter of life you're in.” He credits his success to the unconditional support of his grandfather, Warren Jacobsen. Without him, “all of this could not have been possible.” Myers has played shows in Des Moines, Iowa City and most recently at Zeke’s in Ames. He moved to Cedar Falls in 2008 from Boone. “I have received great support and help from people that are in and around the music business. ... It feels really good to be playing locally in the Cedar Valley,” Myers said.

Euforquestra live AT THE REDSTONE ROOM DAVENPORT — Originally from Iowa City, Euforquestra will bring its tour of progressive, genre-crossing funk fusions to the Redstone Room at River Music Experience at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11. Emerging as a musical powerhouse, Euforquestra is quickly spreading its self-proclaimed Afro-Caribbean-barnyard-funk, a unique, rhythmic blend of sound integrating such genres as Afrobeat, reggae, Afro-Cuban, samba, soca, funk, salsa and dub. With two full-length albums to its name and a relentless tour, Euforquestra has created a presence on the national scene.

He wrote the music and lyrics on his new CD, “Early Attempts,” and the album was produced by Spencer Ford. The first cut, “August,” is an upbeat acoustic guitar forefront tune that some might compare to the sounds of John Mayer or Matt Wertz. Track two, “Fake Love,” talks about being on the same page in a relationship. “Early Attempts” will be available for $5 at a CD release party set for 10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at The Hub.

The Energy to rock Cedar Falls GROUP WILL PLAY AT THE HUB CEDAR FALLS — The Energy, a rock band based in Brooklyn, N.Y., will play at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, at The Hub.

Doors for the performance open at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $10.

“Lights,” the first single off their latest album, “Realize Your Sin,” has made the leap to radio, and the group has opened for acts like 3 Doors Down and Eve 6.

"I am a soloist at heart," Johnson said. He often performs alone, preferring the intimacy and spontaneity of a show that can change with the moment. "I'm a showman. I like to talk to people and I love to make them laugh. And, of course, I have to move them with the music. That's the whole thing. Without that, there is no reason to be on stage."

THE EDGE OF DARKNESS

set at the intersection of politics and big business. Thomas Craven (Mel Gibson) is a veteran homicide detective for the Boston Police Department and a single father. When his only child, 24-year -old Emma (Bojana Novakovic), is murdered on the steps of his home, everyone assumes he was the target. But he soon suspects otherwise and embarks on a mission to find out about his daughter's secret life and her killing. His investigation leads him into a dangerous, looking glass world of corporate cover-ups, government collusion and murder — and to shadowy government operative Darius Jedburgh (Ray Winstone), who has been sent in to clean up the evidence. Craven's solitary search for answers about his daughter's death transforms into an odyssey of emotional discovery and redemption. JASON OSBOURNE movieline

THE HURT LOCKER Starring: Jeremy Renner Director: Kathryn Bigelow

This drama centers on a young woman who claims she was the target of an anti-Semetic attack and the subsequent media sensation it creates. Opposite worlds get set on a collision course, as the film becomes a complex psychological drama raising issues of race, religion and identity. Based on the play by Jean-Marie Besset. DATE

The making of honest action movies has become so rare that Kathryn Bigelow's magnificent The Hurt Locker was shown mostly in art cinemas rather than multiplexes. That's fine; the picture is a work of art. But it also delivers more kinetic excitement, more breath-bating suspense, more putting-you-right-there in the danger zone

AVATAR: James Cameron, the Oscar-winning

director of "Titanic," first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not exist yet. Now, after four years of production, AVATAR, a live action film. Cumulative Gross to Date

ANIMAL ABUSE The Kirklees (West Yorkshire, England) Environmental Health department cited farmer Ronald Norcliffe, 65, in 2008 for inadequate lighting in his barn, which inspectors said failed to meet the “psychological needs” of his one cow and her calf. In his formal appeal, heard in October 2009, Norcliffe noted (unsuccessfully) that he has had a clean record as a farmer for 30 years and that in fact, he still lives fine without electricity in his own house. After his defeat, Norcliffe’s lawyer sighed. “I still have no idea how much lighting is appropriate for a cow.”

FAMILY VALUES On the heels of the “Balloon Boy” fiasco in which a superambitious father exploited his child to win a reality TV job, Jim Dunn of North Vancouver, British Columbia, submitted a demo reel to reality-show producers featuring him and his entire family turned into gasoline-soaked fireballs. Dunn, one of Canada’s leading film stunt men, and his wife and three kids, ages 15, 12 and 9, have all performed as stunt doubles (though it was the first fire for the youngest, who was 7 when the video was shot), and abundant safety precautions were taken (with no resulting complications). In his career, Dunn has suffered six leg fractures and a cracked skull, and needed two bowel resections.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS A news summary of traffic stops on Christmas Eve in Alice Springs, Australia, noted that 11 people were charged with DUI, including one man who was spotted driving despite his car’s hood being broken in the “up” position and having smashed through his windshield. The driver maneuvered down the street by craning his neck out the side window. Two weeks earlier, in Trumbull, Conn., police arrested Christopher Frazao, 27, after watching him drive despite a windshield full of snow (except for a small opening he could peer though). A search of the car revealed marijuana and other drugs, as well as items believed to have been stolen in recent burglaries. PULSE: ISSUE 034 | 2
