SAFE HAVEN ALL EYES ON WATERLOO CENTER FOR THE ARTS, NOW WORLD’S RESOURCE FOR HAITIAN ART TREASURES Waterloo Center for the Arts Curator Kent Shankle was relieved to receive word WATERLOO that Haitian artist Frantz Zephirin had survived the devastating earthquake that

struck Haiti on Jan. 12. But the fate is unknown of many other artists and friends whose work is represented in the center’s extensive Haitian collection, as well as friends and colleagues who were in Haiti, including Marilyn Houlberg from Chicago’s Art Institute, an expert on Haitian Voudou arts and culture. She was missing in the immediate aftermath of the quake, but has been located alive and well. BY MelodyPARKER melody.parker@wcfcourier.com PHOTOS BY RickCHASE Pulse Staff Photographer

“We’re working the e-mails and other sources. It’s still so chaotic, no one knows much yet,” said Shankle.

There’s been no word about such famous artists as Yves Telemaque and Mireille Delice, for example, but Lionel St. Eloi and his family survived, although their house was destroyed. “We visited St. Eloi at his home, a wonderfully whimsical place three or four stories high. Anybody who has been to Haiti can’t visit without developing a strong connection with the people. They have an incredible history and an amazing spirit despite the hardship and poverty of their lives. There’s a warmth and creative spirit you can’t help falling in love with,” Shankle explained. Another friend operates a children’s school near Jacmel in southern Haiti. The earthquake’s epicenter was halfway between the capital city of Port-auPrince and Jacmel. Scully said the children were unharmed, but many parents are missing and homes were destroyed.

The art center is home to the largest public collection of Haitian art in the United States. There are more than 900 objects in the permanent collection, including metal sculptures, paintings and beaded and sequined flags. It was established in 1977 with a gift from Dr. and Mrs. F. Harold Reuling and has expanded to represent work by other Caribbean cultures. Joining forces with Friends of the Art Center and the national chapter of the Haitian Art Society, the center has established a Haiti Quake Relief Fund for emergency relief and recovery.

“Untitled” by Julio Balan

Executive Director Cammie Scully said the center has been inundated with messages from colleagues and scholars from around the world. “They look to us as leaders in the Haitian art field and we’re being as responsive as we can. In the months and years ahead, I suspect people will want us to represent the art of Haiti because so much of it has been lost. We have an encyclopedic collection that begins with the Haitian masters of the 1940s, up to contemporary artists.” Scully and Shankle last visited Haiti in 1998. Since then, several trips were canceled because of political upheaval in the country. “We were planning to take the Haitian Art Conference to Haiti in November, too. More than the art is the human loss and what’s going to happen to the people. We know there are artists in areas of Haiti that were hardest hit,” said Scully.

Many of Haiti’s art treasures have been damaged or destroyed, Shankle said, and the gallery system “probably is crippled. It will be a long, hard road to recovery and it’s important to step in and provide that help.” Scully added: “What’s pouring into the country right now could mean a renaissance for Haiti with decent jobs rebuilding the infrastructure. I may sound like a Pollyanna, but these are an incredibly resilient people.” A large portion of the Haitian collection currently is on display at the center. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

10 arts & entertainment Sculpture by Victoria Reed WATERLOO CENTER FOR THE ARTS EXHIBIT FEATURES UNI STUDENT

WATERLOO — Plastic bags, scrap steel and empty space become strangely lifelike in an exhibit at the Waterloo Center for the Arts. The temporary exhibit, Sculpture by Victoria Reed, features the work of current University of Northern Iowa student Victoria Reed. Reed uses her Iowa roots to depict the aesthetics of form and the controversial qualities of her subjects. This is Reed's first major solo exhibition. She uses metal, wood, plaster, fiber and other natural materials to create works that capture the forms and attitudes of animals. Varying from birds, dogs and sheep to monumental horse forms, Reed's sculptures consistently maintain a surprisingly realistic quality despite her use of unexpected materials and varying levels of abstraction. The Friends of the Art Center will host a gallery talk and reception with Reed at 7 p.m. Friday, March 12. The exhibit will remain on view through April 4 in the Waterloo Center for the Arts’ Forsberg Riverside Galleries. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. For more information, call (319) 291-4490 or visit www.waterloocenterforthearts.org.

10 ‘Guys and Dolls’ CLASSIC SHOW SET AT DUBUQUE GRAND OPERA HOUSE

DUBUQUE — One of America’s best loved musicals, “Guys and Dolls,” will be performed at the Dubuque Grand Opera House. The plot features Sergeant Sarah Brown, a member of the Save a Soul Mission trying to make a difference on the streets of Broadway; Adelaide, the showgirl desperate to leave behind her seemingly glamorous lifestyle for a white picket fence; Nathan Detroit, a swindler keeping just one short step ahead of the law; and the hit songs “I’ve Never Been in Love Before,” “A Bushel and a Peck” and “If I Were a Bell.” Performances are set for Feb. 26-28 and March 3-7. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. except for Sundays, which are at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults and $12 for those age 12 and younger. PULSE: ISSUE 035 | 10

COWBOY JUNKIES

TO PERFORM AT THE REDSTONE ROOM DAVENPORT — Cowboy Junkies will perform at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, at the Redstone Room, 129 Main St. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Cowboy Junkies began their singular journey in 1985 when guitarist Michael Timmins, drummer Peter Timmins and bassist Alan Anton began jamming in a garage. The next step was to find a singer. “I never wanted to be a musician,” Margo Timmins confides, “but one day Mike asked me to sing. I said yes, but only if I didn’t have to do it in front of the other guys. So I sang with Mike for a couple of days, and then he asked, ‘Um, do you think it’d be OK if we brought the other guys in now?’ I said, ‘Well, OK. I guess so, I mean, if we have to.’” The band released its debut, “Whites Off Earth Now!!” in 1986 on its Latent Recordings label. Hypnotic and languorous, it revealed Michael’s fascination with Robert Johnson, Lightnin’ Hopkins and other seminal blues artists. The band toured the southern and southwestern U.S. in support of the record, soaking up the music of Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams and Jimmie Rodgers along the way. This inspired their second album, “The Trinity Session,” self-released in 1988. Before long, the Junkies had signed to RCA Records, which reissued “The Trinity Session” to a wider audience and platinum sales. Their subsequent albums chronicle the band’s evolution, a process Michael describes as gradual and organic. “It’s become much easier to communicate musically over the years, as we’ve all grown as musicians, and of course, we have 20 years of shows behind us now,” Michael says. “We’re able to bring greater dynamics and infinite variety to the music as a result.” In 2005, Cowboy Junkies released “Early 21st Century Blues,” an album principally comprised of covers, which Rolling Stone proclaimed “closely revisits the career-making ‘Trinity,’ — hushed electric guitars, brushed drums and Margo Timmins' husky moans. It all adds up to a concept album about war that screams with a whisper.” The band’s most recent studio effort, 2007’s “At the End of Paths Taken,” was hailed by Paste as an album of “an alluring, gently haunting quality; inspired by reflections on family and world dynamics and mortality.” TICKETS ARE $37.50 FOR THIS SPECIAL SEATED PERFORMANCE. THEY ARE AVAILABLE AT WWW.REDSTONEROOM.COM, EITHER QUAD CITY CO-OP RECORDS LOCATION OR BY VISITING THE RME.

‘ONE NIGHT OF QUEEN’ TO ROCK THE ADLER THEATRE DAVENPORT — The UK’s hottest and most successful rock show, “One Night of Queen,” will play for one performance only at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at the Adler Theatre. The show celebrates the music of Freddie Mercury and Queen. In 1985, following an appearance on Live Aid, Queen was internationally acclaimed as the best live band on Earth with Freddie Mercury as the greatest live performer of his generation. Few performers could ever hope to match his unique talent. Gary Mullen has been recognized worldwide as the closest thing to Freddie. The band and production recreate the excitement and atmosphere of a live Queen concert to unmatched perfection. During their seven years of touring, “One Night of Queen” has built a reputation for regularly selling out large theaters and concert halls across the UK and Europe. Tickets start at $26.50 and are available at all Ticketmaster locations, online at Ticketmaster.com or by calling (800) 745-3000. Additional discounts are available for subscribers and groups of 20 or more by calling (563) 326-8522. FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT WWW.ONENIGHTOFQUEEN.COM.

Park Ave. Registration will be from 6:30 toalways 7 p.m.open! “Art & Copy” is a powerful new film about advertising and inspiration. bluesblowout noteworthyperformance Janiva MAGNESS to headline Blues Blowout

WATERLoo — By the time Janiva Magness turned 16, she had lost both her parents to suicide. over the next two years she lived on the streets and in 12 foster homes, becoming a teenage mother in the process. so when the Detroit native sings the blues, there’s never a false note. she knows pain and loss, as well as the sweet triumph of a second chance. “it’s the only music that ever made any sense to me,” said Magness, who will perform at iowa Public Radio’s Blues Blowout on Feb. 13. “it wasn’t like i made a cognitive decision to sing the blues, it was more about following my heart, following my instincts and following what seems to be the thing that gives me the most peace.” Magness’ connection to her craft has earned her national acclaim. The vocalist is a nominee for the 2010 Blues Music Award for Best contemporary Female Artist of the year, a title she also earned in 2006 and 2007. she has recorded seven solo records and has shared the microphone with numerous blues legends, including R.L. Burnside. “Janiva is special,” said Bob Goffstein, guitarist with The Tornadoes, an

iowa city-based band that will open the night. “she’s a very powerful, emotive singer and has great material.” Magness performs 200 dates a year, and has given shows in Des Moines and iowa city. This year’s Blues Blowout, sponsored by the Friends of kuni/khkE, will mark the singer’s first appearance in the cedar valley. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. organizers expect a crowd of 300, said Mary Grace herrington, chief operating officer of iPR. “The Waterloo/cedar Falls community loves blues, loves music, loves our station, and i think (the Blues Blowout has) just grown from there,” herrington said. “iowa has a very committed blues following that waits for this event every year.” Magness credits the genre for transforming her sorrows into successes. in 1991, she reunited with the daughter she gave up for adoption as a teen. Today they enjoy a close relationship. Magness also has used her celebrity to advocate for kids in need. she serves as a spokeswoman for casey Family Programs, a national organization that works to provide and improve foster care, while offering families resources to help them retain custody of their children. Music transformed her life, Magness said. Today she strives to share the spirit of the blues with audience members. “i want them to walk away with a sense of connection,” Magness said. “if there’s a connection, then i know that i’ve done my job, because that’s what the music is about in the first place, human connection.”

IDENTITY CRISIS TOUR U.S. Cellular Center welcomes Jeff Dunham

CEDAR RAPIDS — Jeff Dunham will bring his undeniable talent and unstoppable laughs to the U.S. Cellular Center at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25. The center is at 370 First Ave. NE. Hailed by Time magazine as “perhaps the most popular comedian in the U.S.,” Dunham continues to pack and sell out venues on his ongoing tour that has made him the top-grossing standup act in America, according to Pollstar. Dunham’s ascension into the pantheon of top entertainers was recently confirmed by Forbes, which ranked him a top earner in its Celebrity 100 list. His three DVDs — “Arguing With Myself,” “Spark of Insanity” and “A Very Special Christmas Special” — have sold more than 4 million copies (and continue to rack up brisk sales). He boasts some 350 million views of his clips on YouTube. The only comic named “Ventriloquist of the Year” twice, Dunham recently struck a multiplatform deal with Comedy Central and content partnerships with iTunes and Amazon.com. His first comedy album, “Don’t Come Home For Christmas,” was No. 1 in comedy sales on Amazon and hit the Billboard independent album charts in the Top 10. His best-selling line of merchandise recently rolled out into retail stores across the nation, and he follows the debut of his series with his first book, “All By My Selves: Walter, Peanut, Achmed and Me,” being published this spring. Tickets are $45.50 and are available by calling (319) 398-5211. For more information, visit www.uscellularcenter.com. PULSE: ISSUE 035 | 2

Starring: Jamie Foxx, Gerard Butler

The legal thriller meets the serial-killer shocker in Law Abiding Citizen. The story begins when home invaders kill Clyde Shelton's wife and daughter. The bereaved father (played by a thoroughly unsympathetic Gerard Butler) looks to slick Philly prosecutor Nick Rice (a low-key Jamie Foxx) to see that they receive the maximum sentence. Instead, the murderer, Ames, testifies against his accomplice, Darby, who gets the chair, while he gets 10 years. Upon his release, Ames' mutilated body turns up in an abandoned warehouse, and all roads lead to Shelton. Rice attempts to defend him, but his client makes it impossible — Shelton wants to go to prison — so he does time, but then members of Rice’s legal team start to die. The attorney suspects Shelton, but can't connect him to the crimes, so he races against the clock to save the lives of his assistant, Sarah (Leslie Bibb), D.A. Jonas (Bruce McGill), and his own wife and child. The movie may sound like a Yank reboot of the Japanese chiller Cure, in which an inmate kills from inside institutional walls, but plays more like a mash-up between “The Silence of the Lambs”, without the psychological complexity, and “The Devil's Advocate”, without the cynical giggles. F. Gary Gray got his start with hip-hop videos and urban action flicks, like Set It Off, until he hit the big time with his remake of “The Italian Job”. “Law Abiding Citizen” is a disappointing muddle from a director who's done better in the past and will surely do better in the future. - Kathleen C. Fennessy - LA Times

OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPHERD

WHAT RECESSION? A December USA Today analysis revealed that during the first 18 months of the recent recession, beginning December 2007, the number of federal employees with six-figure salaries shot up from 14 percent of the federal workforce to 19 percent. Defense Department civilian executives earning more than $150,000 went from 1,868 to more than 10,000, and the Department of Transportation, which had only one person earning $170,000 in December 2007, now has 1,690. The average federal salary is $71,206, compared with the private sector's $40,331.

COMPELLING EXPLANATION Ex-convict John Stephens told a Floyd County (Ind.) judge in December that he had a full-time job and intended to turn his life around, but had slipped when he tried to rob the Your Community Bank. "If I hadn't been watching the news and seeing (other successful) bank robberies," he said, he wouldn't have been tempted. He said he was especially impressed by one serial robber, who had made it look easy by vaulting over banks' counters.

OH, THE IRONY Copenhagen, one of the "greenest" cities in the world, endured an added 41,000 extra tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in December during the 11-day "climate summit." The 15,000 delegates required 2,000 limousines (only five of which were electric or hybrid) to get around town, and the world leaders arrived and departed in 140 private jets, some of which had to be "parked" overnight in Sweden because of airport congestion.

REDNECK CRIME Daniel Gable, 61, was arrested for breaking and entering into a neighbor's apartment in Fargo, N.D., in December. He had triggered the resident's "burglar alarm," which consisted of the stack of empty beer cans the resident places just inside his front door every night.
