THIS EXHIBIT WILL REMAIN ON VIEW Through September 20, 2009.
Erdahl's works tend toward the figurative and the surreal, with compelling and sometimes disturbing doses of irony and social commentary. There are approximately four different bodies of work presented in this exhibition: the figurative sculptures of children, collectively titled “Brief, Amusing Stories”, “The Salesmen”, “Memory Creatures”, and the “Communication Breakdown” series.

sculptorthaddeuserdahl The figures representing childhood reflect Erdahl’s whimsical interpretations of being young as well as the imaginative versus the technological sources of play that exist for children today. “The Salesmen” were inspired by the concept of Erdahl’s own personal alter ego and the demands of an artist to “sell himself” to survive. Also inspired by personal experiences, the “Memory Creatures” reflect Erdahl’s frustrations with forgetting and the nebulous world where our memories are kept. A major shift occurred next, and during Erdahl’s last year of graduate study, he began exploring interactive sculpture wherein the viewers became the “figures” and Erdahl created objects that would experientially engage them. Focusing on communication breakdown and the rift between our internal and external modes of communicating, both interactive and figurative sculptures are utilized to represent this theme in the exhibition. Drawing is also a major component of Erdahl’s process and though he had been sketching for many years, his two-dimensional imagery recently evolved into large-scale drawings for the gallery to join the sculptures as collaborative thematic elements. The thread that ties each body of work together is the human condition and Erdahl’s fascination with the consciousness of self, how we represent ourselves, and how we struggle to communicate with others. With each body of work that Erdahl creates, a new idea drives

Erdahl enjoys the challenges, the surprises, and the opportunities for discovery, and shows this exploration in this exhibit. The Friends of the Art Center will host a closing free gallery talk with artist Thaddeus Erdahl on Friday, September 18 at 7:00pm. Erdahl will also be hosting a 2-day workshop on September 19 and 20, where participants will have the opportunity to work with the artist in sculpting heads and surreal figures. The workshop is $50/person, will be held from 1:00-4:00pm each day, and includes all materials and firing. Pre-registration is required by calling the Waterloo Center for the Arts at (319) 291-4490. Of additional regional interest is that Everett Longley Warner, the artist who supervised U.S. ship camouflage in both World Wars, was originally from Vinton, Iowa. Many of the photographs in the exhibition were provided by the Everett Warner Archives. Other materials were obtained from the Fleet Library at the Rhode Island School of Design, which recently exhibited 450 dazzle camouflage diagrams housed in its collection.

Curator of the exhibition is UNI Professor of Art and Distinguished Scholar Roy R. Behrens, who has written extensively on the history of camouflage. His most recent book, titled "Camoupedia: A Compendium of Research on Art, Architecture and Camouflage," was published in April 2009. An earlier book, "False Colors: Art, Design and Modern Camouflage," released in 2002, has been praised by critics as "an outstanding achievement" and "the best book on the subject."

An exhibition about the role of artists in naval camouflage will be presented by the Gallery of Art at the University of Northern Iowa from August 24 through September 20. Titled "Seagoing Easter Eggs: Artists' Contributions to Dazzle Ship Camouflage," the exhibit includes photographs, ship models, and diagrams of ship camouflage designed by American artists during World War I. The exhibition focuses on a particular kind of camouflage called "dazzle painting," in which wartime ships were painted in brightly colored, abstract geometric shapes. The purpose of this camouflage was not low visibility, but confusion and course deception, for the purpose of diverting the aim of submarine gunners. When dazzled ships were introduced during World War I, the American public called them "cubist nightmares" and
The exhibition will be held in the Gallery of Art showcases in the south wing of the Kamerick Art Building on the UNI campus. The exhibition is free and open to the public during gallery hours, which are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday; and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

TREASURE TROVE OF WOODSTOCK PHOTOS UNEARTHED
Woodstock Experience Four decades after Woodstock, one of the most iconic events of the 1960s, it seemed we had seen everything there was of the four-day event. But for most of that time, a collection of 260 photographs, including panoramic crowd scenes and shots of performers on stage, sat in a Woodbridge, Conn., basement. By William Weir The Hartford Courant Dan Garson, then a 17-year-old photographer for his high school newspaper, took the photos. Other than a few that ran in the New Haven Register and some shots of skinny-dippers published in a magazine, Garson's photos had never seen the light of day. Garson died of melanoma at 39 in 1991, and now his Woodstock photos are being published in "Woodstock Experience," a twovolume limited-edition set (only 1,000 copies are available) that sells for $650. They also are featured this week in an exhibit at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Garson's brother, Steve, said he had no idea how good the photos were until his brother's friend, Brad LeMee, a professional photographer, contacted him.
"I liked them, but to me, they were just my brother's photos," Steve Garson said. "(LeMee) started contacting people in the know. I was really impressed that professional photographers -- people who were paid to be at Woodstock -said they were among the best pictures taken." The ad for the August 1969 music festival in upstate New York caught Dan Garson's attention. On a lark, he wrote to the organizers, requesting a press pass so he could cover it for Amity Regional High School's newspaper, and they gave him one. He had no driver's license, so he tagged along with two writers from the Register. The driver split after one day, but Garson stayed to the very end, when Jimi Hendrix closed the festival. Reports of Woodstock wildness worried Dan's parents, but he called to let them know he was fine. His family figures he hitched a ride home. Garson decided to become a photographer when he was 12, after helping his younger brother attain his "picture-developing badge" for the Cub Scouts. His other big interest was music. Steve Garson said it was that combination of hobbies, plus Dan's moxie, that led to some memorable encounters. Dan often took photos of bands in concert, and when they came around the next time, he would leave his work for them backstage in hopes of meeting them. He did this when the band Chicago came to perform at Quinnipiac University. With 14-year-old Steve in tow, Dan passed the photos to security, who passed them on to the band. Impressed, the members of Chicago told security to let the Garson brothers into the dressing room. "So there we were for an hour and a half, playing ping-pong and hanging out with Chicago," Steve recalled. Their sister, Linda Garson-Smith, remembers when Bobby Colomby, drummer for Blood, Sweat & Tears, phoned at 2:30 in the morning. Their mother answered and scolded the rocker for calling at that hour. Dan went on to be friends with Colomby. After graduating from high school, Garson studied photography PULSE: ISSUE 023 | 14 PULSE: ISSUE 023 | 14
at Rochester Institute of Technology, then studied film production in Toronto. He eventually founded his own business in Toronto, Fabulous Footage, which supplied film clips to production companies for movies and television shows. LeMee, then an employee of Fabulous Footage, saw one of Garson's Woodstock photos on the office wall and wanted to know more about it. Garson told him the story. LeMee was astounded by the quality, but Garson apparently wasn't interested in doing anything more with the photos.
Years after Garson's death, the cardboard box stayed in LeMee's thoughts. He was determined to make the photos public. It was something of a surprise when Harry and Gladys Garson, who by then had moved to Newton, Mass., received a call from LeMee about a year and half ago. "When we moved, you find things that you haven't seen in years," Harry Garson said. "Then we got a call from a fellow in Toronto who worked for Dan. Here they've been for 40 years, and Brad was the motivating force. He knew all the things that Dan had done." LeMee told him he wanted to get Dan's pictures published, prompting the family's frantic hunt for them. LeMee contacted Genesis Publications in England. Rona Elliot, a music journalist who helped put "Woodstock Experience" together, said she was grabbed by the story of how the photos surfaced.
And the actual photos were just as amazing, she said. When they saw the pictures, Elliot said, the editors decided right away that they needed a second volume just for Garson's photos. The other volume includes essays, a specially pressed vinyl record of Woodstock performances by Santana and Jefferson Airplane, maps of the farm and artwork by Peter Max and Shephard Fairey. Having lost their son so many years ago, Harry Garson said he and his wife "were thrilled" that Dan's work would be presented in such a high-profile way. Steve Garson said his family received a licensing fee for the book. LeMee will receive a portion of the proceeds to cover the expenses of travel and photo restoration.
"Woodstock Experience" is available only through Genesis Publications: www.genesis-publications.com.

The romantic comedy stars Hallee Hirsh (Grey’s Anatomy, E.R., 90210) as Kate, a rural American teen who is turning 16. This is the first feature film from Emmy-nominated writer/director Becky Smith (Queer Eye for the Straight Guy). “16 to Life” stars veteran screen actress Theresa Russell (Spiderman III, Black Widow), Jaime Gomez (Nash Bridges, Training Day), Carson Kressley (Queer Eye for the Straight Guy), Mandy Musgrave (South of Nowhere) and Shiloh Fernandez (Gossip Girl, The United States of Tara).
