She has appeared at Riverssance and other popular Quad City locations. THE HUE, an instrumental progressive rock quartet, strives to forge a wholly unique brand of electrified music out of a diverse palate of influences that run the gamut from jazz to metal, classical and post-rock.

RUDE PUNCH was formed by three guys from Davenport, Iowa in the Spring of 2006.Brady Jager, Adam Tucker and Robb Laake have been playing together since they went to high school together in Davenport. Playing in a couple different bands, they noticed that when band practice was over they would meet up together outside of their other bands and play the music they really wanted to play...Reggae. At first they would just jam covers of their favorite bands Sublime, 311, and of course Bob Marley. After the other bands broke-up they decided to take their new band on as their full project. From 2004-2006 they practiced and began writing songs. In the spring of 2006 Rude Punch began playing some shows for their friends' parties and some local bars, creating a good fan-base of "life-loving, partying, dancing, have-a-good-time people". Rude Punch finished their first album in Galena, Illinois at M- studios in the fall of 2006. With that c.d. they took their sound on the road playing shows in Iowa, Illinois,

COVER STORY BY

PUBLIC PROPERTY “Despite a wholesale instrumental personnel makeover since last year’s stunning “What’s Goin’ Down,” Public Property’s third disc in as many years continues the band’s meteoric upward arc as they continue to fashion some of the most ebullient, infectious reggae/ska-based island music anywhere. Charismatic Hawaii-born frontman Dave Bess and the vocal trio of Mareva Minerbi, Margaret Larson and Georgette Stern remain the group’s bedrock, with Bess’ uncanny Marley-esque raspy crooning style elegantly shadowed by the girls’ ethereal, I Threes-like chirping — all punctuated by percussionist Matt Grundstad’s percolating rhythms. Newcomers Ben Franklin and Jeremiah Murphy lock down the rhythm section, guitarist/vocalist Andy Parrott supplies a non-stop blur of driving rhythm chops and slinky, serpentine solos, and keyboardist/vocalist Paul Hala adds varied, spot-on textures.” – Jim Musser, Movement Review. WOODBOX GANG From the village of Makanda in extreme southern Illinois, in a little hollow called Vulture Valley, comes a "caustic acoustic cacophony" known as the Woodbox Gang. They have skillfully combined the American roots music styles of bluegrass, delta blues, folk, and traditional country with the aggressive delivery of punk rock to create their own style of music to which they have given the name "Trashcan Americana". The band is very interested in experimenting with the combined sounds of various conventional and non-conventional instrumentation to create sonic landscapes specifically tailored to the mood and theme of each composition. THE DICK PRALL BAND Based in Chicago and born in Iowa, singer/songwriter Dick Prall comes to his easygoing – and sometimes goofy – manner quite naturally. In person, he’s charming, often peppering his conversations with clever asides wherever possible. Though he readily admits to enjoying the embrace of company, it was Prall’s exploration of what he calls “autonomy” that brought a whole new spin to his latest work. The crack group of musicians here, some of whom are bandmates involved with Prall's previous works, know when to add a swirling fill, and when to get out of the way.

Norman Rockwell: Fact & Fiction September 12, 2009 - January 3, 2010

In 2007, the citizens of Cedar Rapids rallied together to purchase a series of watercolors destined for the auction block in New York. These five watercolors, by acclaimed 20th century American artist Norman Rockwell, depicted scenes associated with an election day and were created specifically for the November 4, 1944 issue of the Saturday Evening Post. To complete the Post commission, Rockwell traveled to a quintessential Midwestern town, Cedar Rapids, to study local citizens as models for his series of images. In the 65 years since his visit, numerous anecdotes and stories have arisen about the artist's time in Cedar Rapids and the creation of this work. This exhibition uses these five, newly conserved and restored watercolors, along with numerous photographs taken by local photographer Wes Panek for Rockwell, to investigate the many facts and fictions associated with Rockwell's visit and this set of watercolors.

newstv Ken Burns BURNS TURNS HIS ATTENTION TO NATIONAL PARKS

Filmed over the course of more than six years at some of nature's most spectacular locales — from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska. BETTER MAKE THOSE PARK RESERVATIONS NOW. By Martin Miller, Maria Elena Fernandez and Kate Aurthur Los Angeles Times

Ken Burns, courtesy of PBS

Ken Burns' "The National Parks: America's Best Idea," a six-part, 12-hour documentary celebrating the virtues of the country's nearly 400 federally protected spaces, sets up camp on PBS on Sept. 27 and stays through Oct. 2. The country's most famous documentarian, who spoke last Saturday during the semiannual Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, is hoping to do for the national parks what he did for its battlefields after the airing of his landmark PBS series "The Civil War" when visits to sites such as Gettysburg skyrocketed by as much as 300 percent.

"We want the superintendents angry at us because of all the Popsicle wrappers they'll have to clean up," Burns said. "It's a good problem to have." Collateral nuisances like trash and traffic jams notwithstanding, large swells of visitors will help ensure the park system's vitality and transcendent importance, Burns said. With about 275 million annual visitors and the green movement on the rise, it seems unlikely the parks will go unnoticed any time soon. Without the shield of the national park system, Burns argued, Yosemite would be a gated community and Yellowstone would be an amusement park.

"We think it's the Declaration of Independence applied to the landscape," says Burns, whose 30-year filmmaking career has produced some of America's most powerful historical documentaries to date, including "The Civil War" and "Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery." "For the very first time in human history, land was set aside not for kings or noblemen or the very rich, but for everybody and for all time," says Burns.

The American-born idea, which Burns characterized as the Declaration of Independence applied to the landscape, spurred other nations to preserve some of their lands for the public. Today, more than 200 countries have set aside more than 4,000 sites. Asked if the lengthy series was a tough sell, especially in comparison with his works about sports, music and war, Burns said no. "The drama is as dramatic as anything else," he said. PBS President and Chief Executive Paula Kerger addressed the key question of the year: that is, money and whether the earthquakes that have rocked the worlds of business and personal finance have caused a permanent change or a temporary one. PBS's local stations have been hit hard during the economic collapse, and PBS itself recently downsized by 10 percent.

"We're trying to be quite realistic about the resources we have available," Kerger said. She went on to say to say that stations' budgets have been slammed from all sides: reductions in state money, university endowments, corporate funding and philanthropy. But there is good news for public television, she said. PBS is funded for the year already. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting will get $430 million this year and is hoping for a further bump to $450 million the following year. Tonally, one journalist asked somewhat rhetorically, is there a difference between the Bush administration and the Obama administration in terms of affection for public television? "I guess the best way to answer that question is that coming out of the administration, we received full funding for public broadcasting, which is the first time in eight years," Kerger said. "So I think that says something." Ken Burns' "The National Parks: America's Best Idea,"

Ken Burns I Influential

Ken Burns has been making documentary films for more than 30 years. Since the Academy Award-nominated Brooklyn Bridge in 1981, he has gone on to direct and produce some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made. The late historian Stephen Ambrose said of Ken’s films, “More Americans get their history from Ken Burns than any other source.” A December 2002 poll conducted by RealScreen Magazine listed The Civil War as second only to Robert Flaherty’s Nanook of the North as the “most influential documentary of all time” and named Ken Burns and Robert Flaherty as the “most influential documentary makers” of all time.

Black summers' night

BLACKsummers'night is the heavily anticipated new studio album from groundbreaking modern soul artist Maxwell. BLACKsummers'night is the first full-length Maxwell release since Now, his critically-acclaimed third studio album, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 in August 2001.

Weeks Peak in Rlse

2 3 4 Dream Theater's 10th album isn't much of a surprise. Like most of the band's work, it's long (this one lasts 75 minutes over six songs), soaring prog metal. For all that, it's pretty good. Few modern metal bands so frequently aim to be so epic, reliably churning out albums full of bombastic, self-referential minisuites, with finger-splitting guitar solos, tasteful piano-violin interludes and synthesizers galore. Most of it works. The albums are across the map musically but consistent. "A Nightmare to Remember" kicks things off, and it's winningly gothic. But its 16 minutes give a good sense of the endurance required of listeners. "A Rite of Passage" and "Wither" follow and are the shortest songs on the album (8:36 and 5:26), basic melodic hard rock. Then it's back to the 12-plus-minute grandeur. Only the infrequent, silly death growls really miss the mark, though some of the instrumental breaks seem to meander. But at this point in Dream Theater's career, the sound is basically set, and so is the audience. With songs that length, the band is not going out of its way to become more accessible. Its ambition is impressive and appealing, as is its musicianship. Dream Theater is worth checking out, and this is as good a place as any to start.

If Kanye West's 2008 album, "808s and Heartbreak," was hip-hop's first emo record, then Kid Cudi's 2008 mix tape "A Kid Named Cudi" was the first emo mix tape. Playing the role of interplanetary outsider, Cudi explored the disillusionment and loneliness, both personal and professional, that can't be overcome, despite being one of the most lauded voices in hip-hop's freshman class. It's disappointing, then, that Cudi's latest mix tape, "Dat Kid From Cleveland," regresses to the hip-hop mean. Instead of a coherent musical narrative, the mix tape is a catchall for the one-offs Cudi released this year, and he does more posturing than pondering. The results are not nearly as charming. The first two-thirds of the mix tape plays like an iPod Shuffle loaded with regrettable Top 40 songs. On "I Poke Her Face," Cudi is joined by his idol, West, and Common; the trio lazily trades sophomoric one-liners about bedroom behavior over a sped-up sample of Lady Gaga's "Poker Face." It is not until the mix tape's final third that Cudi finds his groove: "Switchin Lanes" and the LCD Soundsystemsampling "Can I Be" provide moments both unexpected and exciting. With his highly anticipated debut album, "Man on the Moon: The End of the Day," due this fall, Cudi's strong finish should remind listeners there's still plenty to look forward to from this 25-year-old Clevelander.

COLLECTIVE SOUL "Rabbit"

Multi-platinum rockers Collective Soul have revealed the title and track listing to their upcoming Loud & Proud/Roadrunner Records debut album, Collective Soul (Rabbit). The album, which is scheduled for an August 25th release date, was recorded at frontman Ed Roland’s Lake House studio and is self-produced. Listen for their first single, “Staring Down.”

Having already sold over 45 million albums worldwide, ‘Footsteps’ is his first ever collection of covers and also features 2 brand new tracks. The 13 ‘covers’ on ‘Footsteps’ represent a personal and candid appraisal by Chris of songs which have influenced and affected the way he has crafted his musical imprint. Chris selected the songs by applying three critical principles: he had to love them, have sung them many times before – and, perhaps most relevantly, they had to have inspired him. “Listening to the great songwriters was the inspiration for me to try and become a good songwriter myself,” he says. “I’m talking about the likes of Lennon & McCartney and Bob Dylan; people as good as that just don’t seem to exist any more. I learned my trade, my craft, almost at the feet of the Great Masters. And that is my musical journey. Those songs are my footsteps.” Two new pieces, “First Steps” and “Footsteps”, explain in greater depth his musical journey, his dreams and aspirations, and his sense of achievement from hopeful beginnings to the success of today. Chris says the process of shortlisting the songs for inclusion on the album was an involved one. They are all, in my opinion, great songs – and each one has a resonance with me.

JOURNEY SPECIAL GUEST HEART Sunday, August 23 Tickets: $45 With hits like "Don't Stop Believing", "Any Way You Want It" and "Faithfully" and a career spanning three decades, Journey has firmly established its music legacy. They are also among the best-selling artists with two gold, three platinum and eight multiplatinum albums. “Revelation,” the groupʼs most recent album and first with lead vocalist Arnel Pineda, kicks off with the single “Never Walk Away,” a melodysoaked and guitar-driven anthem with the resilient air and upbeat optimism fans have come to expect from Journey. Yet Pineda hadnʼt even joined the band when the albumʼs first songs were written in mid-2007, and founding guitarist Neal Schon is quick to admit, it wasnʼt always easy to stay optimistic when the band wasnʼt sure what the future held. Since the new album, Journey has been playing for packed crowds all over the world. Ann Wilson and her younger sister, Nancy Wilson, first showed the world that women can rock when their band Heart stormed the charts in the 70s with hits like "Crazy on You," "Magic Man," "Barracuda," ʻStraight On,” “Even It Up” and “Kick It Out.” They continued topping the charts through the 80s and into the 90s with huge hits like “These Dreams,” “Alone,” “What About Love,” “If Looks Could Kill” and “Never.” Along the way, Heart sold more than 30 million records, sold out arenas worldwide and had a profound influence on rock music. The sisters reunited as Heart in early 2002, during which time they released a critically acclaimed live concert film on DVD and CD, “Heart Alive In Seattle,” followed in 2004 by “Jupiters Darling,” the first new Heart studio album in a decade, produced by Nancy and featuring 15 original songs. Since then, the duo has been touring worldwide.

Ways Businesses Benefit from Going Green

Faster Pussy Cats & Sister Sin

1

SAVE MONEY TODAY AND TOMORROW | “Going Green is Too Costly”. It simply isn’t true that Going Green is going to break the bank. It is true that companies adopting Green Practices save real money applied directly to their bottom line by taking the necessary steps to run a cleaner and more efficient business. New practices that evaluate and reduce energy, water, materials, waste, and other inputs result in clear and quantifiable savings both today and tomorrow as they gain acceptance into your company’s culture. CREATE A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE | ”Green” vs. “brown”. It’s a total mismatch. More and more success stories are being written each day around the advantages Green Businesses are realizing vs. their ‘brown’ counterparts. Statistics show us alarming upward trends worldwide that customers, consumers, and businesses alike are more inclined to purchase and partner with established Green Businesses. Customer loyalty to such businesses is reaching an all-time high.

2

INCREASE EFFICIENCIES | “Lean and Green”. Analyzing your business from top to bottom with a keen eye toward building a greener and sustainable operation fosters an overall culture of waste eliminate among both employees and management if implemented properly.

3

IMPROVE LOCAL ECONOMIES | “Local is the New Green”. Doing things like buying and recycling locally not only can reduce your carbon footprint, it helps local business economies as well as keeping young Iowans retain residence here by creating stronger and more sustainable communities.

Throw away your heavy metal rulebook: a new movement is preparing to hit “for those about to rock”. Gothenburg, Sweden’s SISTER SIN are your new ambassadors of “street metal”. Having grown apathetic towards the popular trends in Sweden’s hard music scene, SISTER SIN arose from the gutters of Gothenburg in 2002. Settling on their moniker because it represented their “bound to absolutely nothing” lifestyles, the furious foursome entered the local scene as a hard-hitting, undeniable metallic force.

AUG 11

Female lead vocalist Liv, guitarist Jimmy, bassist Chris and drummer Dave created a rough-around-the-edges yet relatable image of dysfunction and attitude. Backed up with fresh lyrics and gritty riffs, SISTER SIN set out to inject some of what had been absent from the heavy metal scene since the glory days of the early 80’s. “We just try to deliver good rock-and-roll music with the oldschool touch,” notes Jimmy. “The style of music that we perform is an important part of rock history that deserves more attention.”

INCREASE EMPLOYEE MOTIVATION & WELLNESS | “Green and Clean”. Introducing a Green Business culture can have a positive measurable effect on your employee’s motivation, morale, and wellness. Employees respect efforts made by management such as improving indoor quality, reducing waste and eliminating environmental toxins. This provides a healthier work environment and allows you to attract and retain key employees who share your values and commitment.

G.I.JOE:

RISE OF THE COBRA

07 AUG

Starring: Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Ray Park, Rachel Nichols, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje

What’s the story?

Duke and Ripcord are two specially trained military operatives who join an elite international team called "G.I. Joe." This highly-skilled unit works under the radar, answers to no one, uses the latest in ultra-high-tech equipment, and does not accept failure as an option. Their current assignment will take them all over the world as they go head-to-head with an infamous arms dealer known as Destro and learn the dark truths behind the ominous new organization known only as "Cobra."

Two Good Reasons 1. Director Stephen Sommers, best known for The Mummy

and The Mummy Returns, knows how to bring the action. The way he sees it, this film is his chance to explore some fun, James Bond-like territory.

2. Not familiar with the "G.I. Joe" franchise? Not a problem. The movie is designed to be just as entertaining for newcomers as it is for old fans. And the writers say it's inspired by the early '80s comic book more than the cartoon series.

RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN 02 Loosely based on Alexander Key's novel Escape to Witch

Mountain, Race to Witch Mountain is not so much a remake of the 1975 film Escape to Witch Mountain as an entirely new film based on some key plot points from the former film. Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Anna Sophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig. Rated PG due to sequences of action and violence, frightening and dangerous situations, and some thematic elements. (Ages 9 and older) -Tami Horiuchi

THE SOLOIST 03 a deeply moving and deeply human film about people and what,

and whom, they connect with. Robert Downey Jr., who is effortlessly charismatic, plays Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez. Jamie Foxx also stars as Nathaniel Ayers (also in a stellar turn), a homeless street musician whose lovely music played on a battered two-string violin. DUPLICITY 04 Oscar® winner Julia Roberts and Clive Owen star as two sexy spies-turned-

corporate operatives in the midst of a clandestine love affair. When they find themselves on either side of an all-out corporate war, they'll put everything on the line to remain one double-cross ahead in a high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse. From writer/director Tony Gilroy (seven-time Oscar®-nominated Michael Clayton) comes the film critics are raving about: “Roberts and Owen have sizzling chemistry in this instant classic.” AUG.UST 25.
