Festival have returned with gusto. And so, even though budgets are tight these days doesn’t mean that you can’t escape for a weekend of culture; Iowa City’s location – a half-hour south of Cedar Rapids, and only a little over an hour away from Cedar Falls, Waterloo and Dubuque – makes it a great candidate for an inexpensive getaway. And while the city is generally busy and frantic during the school year (especially during the Big 10 football season), summer is the perfect time to catch the city at its most relaxed. If you’re ready for a cultural excursion, Pulse proudly presents your itinerary for a weekend in Iowa City.

nchoring the southern tip of the 380 Corridor and running along the lengthy Interstate 80 artery, Iowa City has long been considered a cultural crossroads of the region. As the first capitol of the state and home to the University of Iowa, Iowa City has long been a center for learning and the arts, and it’s a fact that has been recognized by more than just the citizens. The Old Capitol Cultural District, an area covering much of the downtown and neighboring historical neighborhoods, was one of the first certified Cultural and Entertainment Districts in the state of Iowa, while 2004 saw Forbes Magazine naming Iowa City the third Best Small Metropolitan Area in the U.S. It seems that even the international community has taken notice of this city built on the banks of the Iowa River: in late 2008, UNESCO designated Iowa City a “City of Literature,” in honor of its rich literary tradition (home to writers such as John Irving, Flannery O’Connor and Tennessee Williams), and is only one of three in the world with such a title. Unfortunately, some important pieces of Iowa City’s culture were lost in the waters of the flood of 2008; as the Iowa River rose past its banks, it irreparably damaged the U of I Museum of Art and Hancher Auditorium, a major performance space in Eastern Iowa. Yet, even in the shadow of flood recovery, Iowa City continues to be a repository for the arts and entertainment; sites ravaged by the floodwaters, like the Iowa Memorial Union and City Park, have been rebuilt and opened to the public, while popular downtown festivals like the Iowa City Arts Festival and the Iowa City Jazz

Want something no one else will have? FRIDAY DINNER::
Keep it Easy When it comes to dinner in Iowa City, eating right doesn’t mean that you’ve got to drop major coin. Enjoy the Atlas outdoor patio while eating their famed Iowa Pork Tenderloin or Atlas Macaroni and Cheese; enjoy a delicious gourmet burger and fries at Short’s; or stop in at the India Café, which has been voted “Best Ethnic Dining” in Iowa City by virtually every local publication. variety of national musical acts, or head over to the Riverside Theatre for some dramatics, produced by local actors and directors. If you’re into foreign or independent films, or you just want to skip the Hollywood offerings, you can’t go wrong with the student-run Bijou Theater, located in the Iowa Memorial Union. SHARE SOME DRINKS:: If you’re ready to party, hit the dance floor at The Summit or check out DC’s, a multi-level club filled with flat-screens. If you’re in the mood to chill out, kick back with a pint at George’s, the Old Capitol Brew Works & Public House, or shoot some stick at College Street Billiards Club, located in the heart of the Ped Mall. Try Donnelly’s or the Dublin Underground if the Irish pub scene is more your style, or grab some sake or a martini at Formosa in the upscale Hotel Vetro if you’re in the mood to flaunt it.
SATURDAY LUNCH::
Do Something Different Skip the fast food and try out some of the most unique lunch spots Iowa City has to offer. Try the Beef & Brie sandwich at Quinton’s, or grab a fresh-made falafel at Oasis for a healthier lunch. If you’re in the mood to get outside, put together an organic, locally grown picnic at New Pioneer Co-op and head to City Park for a lazy day by the Iowa River.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON::
Brush Up on Your History Spend the day exploring the history of the State. Take a tour of the former state capitol at the Old Capitol Museum, or head next door to Macbride Hall to tour the U of I Museum of Natural History – both are free and open to the public. If you’re a Hawkeye fan, you can’t miss the U of I Athletics Hall of Fame, where you can see Nile Kinnick’s Heisman trophy.
SATURDAY DINNER::
Sample Iowa City’s Finest Iowa City has long had a reputation as a destination for foodies, and with highly-rated restaurants like the Motley Cow, Devotay and the Linn Street Café all occupying the same block and using local, organic ingredients, it’s no surprise. If you’re in the mood for something a little more exotic, you’ll find creative, sumptuous sushi at the nearby Takanami.
RECOMMENDATION: The menu at the Motley Cow changes with the seasons and the availability of local ingredients, but their wood-fire pizzas remain a delicious year-round favorite among patrons. Reservations are recommended at all the above restaurants.
SATURDAY EVENING::
Live Music Night Iowa City is synonymous with live music, and with several venues, you’ll be able to find your own drum to march to. Bring the earplugs for a show at the Picador, Iowa City’s premier rock venue, or head downstairs at The Yacht Club to catch all kinds of acts, ranging from funk to punk to jazz. The Mill serves up some of Iowa City’s best indie music, while the Piano Lounge keeps the lights and the mood low, set to the sound of a baby grand. HINT: The Piano Lounge is located behind Takanami, through what looks like a small, shady walkway. Don’t be scared.
SUNDAY MORNING::
Eat Away The Night Before Soothe your head and stomach with a thick omelet at the Hamburg Inn No. 2, an Iowa City institution and frequent campaign stop for politicians. If the wait is too long, head over to Lou Henri’s for unique egg dishes and amazing waffles. HINT: The Hamburg Inn is a popular spot, so expect a sizable wait if you don’t get there before 7-8 in the morning. Don’t worry; it’s worth it. SUNDAY NOON:: Buy a Book Celebrate Iowa City’s lengthy literary history by shopping at one of the city’s many bookstores before hitting the road home. Prairie Lights Books is Iowa City’s most popular independent bookstore, although if you’re the type that loves digging through stacks of used books, you’ll definitely want to set aside a few hours for the Haunted Bookshop and The Book Shop.

WICKED BROADWAY’S BIGGEST BLOCKBUSTER COMES TO DES MOINES
1.
icked is a Tony Award-winning Broadway and West End musical, with songs and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman. The story is based on the best-selling novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, a parallel novel of L. Frank Baum's classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz. Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and her relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. (In the album notes, Gregory Maguire explained that he derived the name "Elphaba" from the initials of L. Frank Baum.) Their friendship struggles through their opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, their reactions to the Wizard's corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba's public fall from grace. The plot is set mostly before Dorothy's arrival from Kansas, and includes several references to well-known scenes and dialogue in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz as a backstory.
Des Moines’ most eagerly anticipated stage production will begin performances at the Civic Center on Sept. 23 for a limited engagement of four weeks The musical debuted on Broadway on October 30, 2003. It was produced by Universal Pictures and directed by Joe Mantello, with musical staging by Wayne Cilento. Its original stars were Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, and Joel Grey as the Wizard. Although the production received mixed reviews and was panned by The New York Times, it has proved to be a favorite among patrons. The Broadway production's success spawned productions in Chicago, Los Angeles, London's West End, Tokyo, Melbourne, and Stuttgart, as well as two North American tours that have visited over 30 cities in Canada and the United States. Wicked has broken box office records around the world, holding weeklygross-takings records in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, St. Louis, and London, and the record for biggest opening in the West End (£100,000 in the first hour on sale). The West End production has played to more than 2 million people, and the North American tour has been seen by over two million patrons. The show was nominated for ten 2004 Tony Awards, winning those for Best Actress, Scenic Design and Costume Design. It also won six Drama Desk Awards MORE INFORMATION:

Terms Everyone Should Be Familiar With When Going Green
1
SUSTAINABILITY | Various definitions abound for this one that’s quickly becoming part of our mainstream vocabulary. Let’s go with this one: “Using methods, systems and materials that won't deplete resources or harm natural cycles.”
2
GREEN BUILDINGS | Many new construction projects are now including new and innovative environmentally friendly construction materials and architectural designs. In addition, sustainable land/lots must be considered as part of the Green Building platform. This one requires an official definition so here’s the U.S. Green Building Council’s take of a Green Building: "A high performing home or business that's energy and water efficient, has good indoor air quality, uses environmentally sustainable materials and also uses the building lot or site in a sustainable manner." GREEN PRODUCTS | We are becoming increasingly aware of the need to include Green Products in our efforts to Go Green. Products are things we use in conjunction with Green Buildings and Practices. Here’s a definition of Green Products we like to use – “A product that is environmentally and socially responsible, along with being accountable to, and respectful of, the places and people that provide and use them.”
3
4
GREEN PRACTICES | Arguably the most important aspect of Going Green lies in the daily practices we perform in our day to day routines – be it at home or work. This is the straw that stirs the drink, and adopting Green Practices is the one area each and every one of us can participate in starting today. Practices also happen to have the largest overall environmental impact and is the key link in the Green Chain of Buildings, Products and Practices. Here’s a powerful definition I like to use that was created many years ago. I think it pretty much sums up the concept of Green Practices: "In every deliberation, we must consider the impact on the seventh generation... even if it requires having skin as thick as the bark of a pine." – Great Law of the Iroquois
5
GREENWASHING | Unfortunately even though Going Green is the right thing to do, there are always bumps in the road. Greenwashing is a commonly used term that refers to “The promotion of a product or service as being environmentally friendly without any basis in real fact.” More on this topic in future riffs...

UNKNOWN COMPONENT BECOMING KNOWN By my count, Keith Lynch has released five albums in about as many years, an admirable feat for an artist, considering (or due to) the fact that he records and releases his work independently. The age of MySpace and relative ease of home recording has opened up many possibilities for artists with imagination to spare, and as Unknown Component, Lynch continues to offer up his wordy form of musical poetry for anyone who cares to have a go. Separately Connected, the latest UC release, offers up a dozen engaging trips through such cheery affairs as the nature of truth and reality, with songs titled “Alone With Your Mistakes” and “Friendly Indifference”. The music of UC propels even the most brooding sentiment forward, filling the empty spots with hammering drum fills, insistent guitar chording and keyboard landscapes. “At times like these we tell ourselves that all we need is something else,” sings Lynch, nicely summing up the desire churning through a culture that seemingly has everything. The music, which serves as the backdrop for Lynch’s wordplay, sometimes seems like an afterthought, quickly fading out as soon as the thought is complete, but the depth of the lyric is the prize after all. Fans of the late Elliott Smith, Radiohead or even ’90s era U2 will likely find Unknown Component to their taste. I wouldn’t go so far as to call Separately Connected a rock record, although tracks like “Being Awake” and “The Truth of Telling Lies” come pretty close to being anthems. Still, Lynch is taking on the Big Issues at his own pace and succeeding. Featured on KWWL Channel 7 Live performance: Wednesday 7/29 12:45 PM. PULSE: ISSUE 021 | 12

understated textures and sleek, uptown grooves – a sound Scaggs would develop further on his commercial breakthrough Silk Degrees. RIVERSIDE, IA Boz Scaggs hits the Event Center stage at Riverside Casino & Golf Resort on Friday, September 25, 2009 at 8pm. Tickets are $55 or $70. Tickets are on sale now in the Gift Shop, or online at riversidecasinoandresort.com or by calling 877-6773456. The show is open to guests 21 years of age and older. Singer and musician Boz Scaggs has been associated with some of the most incendiary talents of the rock era.
Scaggs began his solo recording career in 1969, with an eponymous album for Atlantic Records that features members of the famed Muscle Shoals rhythm section. That album has achieved a kind of legendary cult status for the extended blues foray “Loan Me A Dime,” which features an incendiary guitar solo by the late Duane Allman. PULSE: ISSUE 021 | 14
In 1970, Scaggs began a long-term association with Columbia Records. His first three efforts for the label – Moments, Boz Scaggs and Band and My Time – are loaded with durable, insightful original songs. Slow Dancer, issued in 1974, emphasizes understated textures and sleek, uptown grooves – a sound Scaggs would develop further on his commercial breakthrough Silk Degrees.

It also brought Scaggs a Grammy award: “Lowdown,” which he co-wrote with David Paich, was voted Best R&B song. Scaggs has released several successful albums since Silk Degrees including Middle Man, Other Roads, Come on Home, Dig and But Beautiful.

Abdul, Still Without Contract, Poised to Leave `Idol'
She already is looking toward an "Idol"-less future BY RICHARD RUSHFIELD AND SCOTT COLLINS LOS ANGELES TIMES
HOLLYWOOD - Paula Abdul is unhappy. And unless the producers of "American Idol" change her frown to a smile soon, she'll dance like there's no tomorrow away from TV's No. 1 show.
"Very sadly, it does not appear that she's going to be back on `Idol,' " David Sonenberg, Abdul's manager, said. With auditions for the ninth season due to start Aug. 6, Sonenberg says he doesn't even have a proposal for a contract from FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment, the production companies behind the show. The new season is scheduled to premiere in January. "I find it under these circumstances particularly unusual, I think unnecessarily hurtful," he said of the contract holdup. "I find it kind of unconscionable and certainly rude and disrespectful that they haven't stepped up and said what they want to do." Representatives for Fremantle, 19 and Fox declined to comment. When TV stars (or their reps) air contract-renewal gripes, it's often a sign that negotiations are entering a more active phase. Abdul -- whose tearful, tongue-tied feedback to contestants has made her a kind of batty sister figure to star "Idol" judge Simon Cowell -- may have special reasons to want to push the ball forward now, given that "Idol" host

Ryan Seacrest just signed a deal worth a reported $45 million that will keep him on the job for at least the next three years. That pact effectively doubled Seacrest's salary. Meanwhile, Cowell has a contract that expires next year and is jockeying for his own rich new payday. Published reports have floated $144 million, which Cowell has scoffed at, saying that talks are ongoing. (Fellow judge Randy Jackson is booked through 2011.) But the situation is more complicated for Abdul. Last season, the producers added a fourth judge, Kara DioGuardi. Producers have not announced a deal with DioGuardi either, but the speculation is that her presence at the judging table might have been a shrewd move to tamp down any outsize contract demands that Abdul and her team might make. For their parts, DioGuardi and Abdul have said recently that they want to return to the show. But in Abdul's case, that seems dependent on getting the right dollar amount. Sonenberg has said his client has not been well-compensated. She already is looking toward an "Idol"-less future, he says, although Abdul's foray into non-"Idol" programming, the 2007 Bravo show "Hey Paula," was not a success. "She's not a happy camper as a result of what's going on. She's hurt. She's angry," Sonenberg said. "I think at this point we're going to be considering everything, including some kind of a competition show. She has tremendous ideas for a whole variety of shows."

He has been bridging the gap between generations of music-lovers both in the Greens the fees world. for 18 holes fourrelease, people, including cartsTemporary, at Lacoma Golffinds Course U.S. and 1. around Hisfor new Ain’t Just Loomis masterfully blending his myriad influences, at once forging ahead into new musical territories while maintaining a strong connection to the blues legends that took him under their wings at a young age. Born and raised in Galveston, Texas, Hamilton was first hooked on music through his parents’ extensive collection of blues, rock, and soul records. Hamilton honed his multiinstrumental chops early, learning drums, piano, guitar, bass and harmonica by his early teens, and performing as part of his family’s doo-wop group. At age sixteen he went backstage to meet Bo Diddley, and before the night was over Hamilton was onstage playing alongside the legend. Since that initial meeting, Diddley has become a friend, mentor, and supporter. “INNOVATE, DON’T IMITATE”…Diddley’s words continue to inspire Hamilton and fuel his desire for originality. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member said of Loomis, “You got to put some seasonin’ in what you’re doin’, and this boy’s got the whole salt shaker!” Diddley contributes his unmistakable voice and funky tremolo guitar to “You Got To Wait,” a tune he and Hamilton co-wrote for Ain’t Just Temporary. Other Texas blues legends such as Johnny Copeland, Gatemouth Brown, Joe “Guitar” Hughes, and Albert Collins also schooled him early on in the finer points of the music, recognizing the youngster’s talent and potential. By the time he turned eighteen, Hamilton had performed in front of thousands at the Delta Blues Festival, and he was writing, arranging, and performing his own material. He released his first CD, Hamilton, in 1994, which received a Grammy Nomination for "Best Contemporary Blues Album".
