SPRINGS, SPROCKETS AND PULLEYS EXHIBIT - NOW THROUGH JANUARY 18 Everything looks better in a museum. Men, women, grandmas, grandpas and kids of all ages will be amazed by this whimsical exhibit Waterloo, IA - Imagine a museum actually showcasing old kitchen utensils, machine parts, pieces of furniture, lighting fixtures, fishing tackle, medical supplies, toys and carnival figurines. It’s not your typical art exhibit, that’s for sure, but in the eyes of artist and mechanical sculptor Steve Gerberich, teapots become heads, lawnmowers transform into razor-jawed sea creatures, stacks of plastic cups metamorphose into the trunks of palm trees. Yes, everything looks better in a museum… with a little imagination. Just press a button, turn a crank, or step on a pedal and set one of Gerberich's amazing and curious sculptural assemblages into motion. A flock of decoy geese flap suitcase wings, an automated orchestra performs using tennis-racket banjos and hubcap snare drums, an over-zealous farmer endlessly milks a wooden cow with hooves clad in high-top sneakers. These and many other witty motion machines are brought together in Springs, Sprockets and Pulleys: The Mechanical Sculptures of Steve Gerberich, a new exhibit on display now at the Waterloo Center for the Arts through January 18, 2009. ............................................................... 175TH CELEBRATION PICNIC The City of Dubuque*s 175th Anniversary planning committee is coordinating a community-wide picnic day to celebrate Dubuque*s 175th anniversary. the others' eyes to the facts. "This is a remarkable thing about democracy," says the foreign-born juror, "that we are notified by mail to come down to this place and decide on the guilt or innocence of a man, of a man we have not known before. We have nothing to gain or lose by our verdict. We should not make it a personal thing." But personal it is, with each juror revealing his or her own character as the various testimonies are reexamined, the murder is re-enacted and a new murder threatened before their own eyes! Tempers get short, arguments grow heated, and the jurors become TWELVE AN£RY MEN.

witty motion machines are brought together in Springs, Sprockets and Pulleys: The Mechanical Sculptures of Steve Gerberich, a new exhibit on display now at the Waterloo Center for the Arts through January 18, 2009.

Gerberich is truly a visionary - a creative problem-solver who uses basic mechanical systems and found objects to construct his amazing whimsical art. An avid collector of discarded treasures, from tag sales, surplus stores, thrift shops and yes, even dumpsters, virtually anything he touches may become a part of his work. Gerberich’s "Springs, Sprockets and Pulleys" exhibit has been traveling for over seven years to museums across the United States.

His palette is a toolbox and his art is based on the simple principles of mechanical motion, created from everyday items. But don't call it junk. "I really don't use the J-word," Gerberich explains, "but I use, you know, 'overlooked common objects.’” He continues to challenge the every-day, pushing objects to come alive and work in extraordinary ways. Bridging the gap between fine art and fun, Gerberich's gadgets have been described by Charles Osgood of CBS Sunday Morning as "common objects, made uncommon" and NBC Today Show's Gene Shalit has called them "brilliantly eccentric" and "ingenious". Gerberich's work offers viewers a unique way to interact with contemporary sculpture, explore the principles of simple mechanical motion, and simply ponder the remarkable inventiveness of art. Steve Gerberich, a Waukee, Iowa-native, graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in the early 1980's with a BFA in photography. After graduation, he moved to New York City where his photographic work was transformed into large-scale kinetic storefront window installations for major department

stores such as Bloomingdale's and Macy's. Gerberich, a sculptor, painter and photographer by trade, cites Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, Joseph Cornell, and his late brother Tim as inspirations for his work.

And once Gerberich's work broke "out of the box", there was no putting it back into small spaces or quiet still lifes. Since then, his works have been exhibited in NYC's Grand Central Terminal, in London, and at major museums across the U.S. The Waterloo Center for the Arts will be hosting ten different Saturday workshops throughout the next several months, where all ages can discover the world of mechanical motion and making art from everyday items. Workshops begin Saturday, September 20 and pre-registration is required. See a complete list of Gerb-o-matic classes being offered at www.waterloocenterforthearts.org or call the Waterloo Center for the Arts at 319-291-4490 to register.

IMLS and its cooperator, the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH), will award a total of 3,000 free sets of the IMLS Bookshelf by the end of 2009. FUTURE GENERATIONS:: “We are very pleased to announce the recipients of the IMLS Bookshelf in the second round of competition. These libraries, museums, and archives are in the forefront of our call to action on behalf of America’s collections,” said AnneImelda Radice, Director of IMLS. “According to a recent national survey, our important collections are at great risk, and without them, the American story simply cannot be told to future generations.” THE DUBUQUE MUSEUM OF ART IS BEING AWARDED THIS ESSENTIAL SET OF RESOURCES BASED ON AN APPLICATION DESCRIBING THE NEEDS AND PLANS FOR CARE OF ITS COLLECTIONS:: The IMLS Bookshelf focuses on collections typically found in history or art museums and in libraries' special collections, with an added selection of texts for zoos, aquaria, public gardens, and nature centers. It addresses such topics as the philosophy and ethics of collecting, collections management and planning, emergency preparedness, and culturally specific conservation issues. THE IMLS BOOKSHELF IS A CRUCIAL COMPONENT OF CONNECTING TO COLLECTIONS:: A Call to Action, a conservation initiative that the Institute launched in 2006. IMLS began the initiative in response to a 2005 study by Heritage Preservation documenting the dire state of the nation’s collections. The multi-faceted, multi-year initiative shines a nationwide spotlight on the needs of America’s collections, especially those held by smaller institutions, which often lack the human and financial resources necessary to adequately care for their collections. For more information on the conservation initiative, please go to www.imls.gov/collections. ABOUT THE INSTITUTE OF MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SERVICES:: The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. Reading Lolita In Dubuque In observance of Banned Books Week, multiple copies of Vladimir Nabokov's 1955 classic novel Lolita, as well as Azar Nafisi's 2003 memoir Reading Lolita in Tehran, are now on display and available for check out at Carnegie-Stout Public Library in Dubuque.

READING LOLITA IN DUBUQUE Awe and exhiliration-along with heartbreak and mordant wit--abound in Lolita, Nabokov's most famous and controversial novel, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsessive, devouring, and doomed passion for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America. Most of all, it is a meditation on love--love as outrage and hallucination, madness and transformation. NY Times Book Review Sunday, August 17, 1958 - Elizabeth Janeway [Lolita's] illicit nature will both shock the reader into paying attention and prevent sentimentally false sympathy from distorting his judgment. Contrariwise, I believe, Mr. Nabokov is slyly exploiting the American emphasis on the attraction of youth and the importance devoted to the “teen-ager” in order to promote an unconscious identification with Humbert’s agonies. Both techniques are entirely valid.

Acclaimed as one of the greatest novels of the 20th century, Lolita is a highly controversial and frequently banned story about a middle-aged man who is obsessed with a 12-year-old girl. Lolita is available in regular and large print and audio-book formats on the main floor of the Library.

Also, on Friday, October 3, Carnegie-Stout will host a free screening of Stanley Kubrick's 1962 movie Lolita. Professor Paul Kohl from Loras College will introduce the movie, and open discussion will be encouraged after the show. The movie, which is not rated, will be shown at 7 p.m. in the Library's 3rd Floor Auditorium. Banned Books Week, September 27 through October 4, 2008, is a nationwide campaign to promote freedom of expression. Sponsored by librarians, booksellers, publishers and writers, Banned Books Week has been observed every year since 1982. The Permanent Art Collection is a vital cultural and educational resource for UNI students, university staff and faculty, and the greater Cedar Valley community.

SINCE THE 1930s

a remarkable cross-section of nationally and internationally known artists.

THE VIEWER

While works of art are what they are and should be viewed and appreciated for just that, they also serve as witnesses for all sorts of inquiries: It’s up to the viewer / curator / investigator to probe.

T

he University of Northern Iowa Gallery of Art will present an exhibition of works from the UNI Permanent Art Collection titled "Highlights from the Collection" from Monday, Aug. 29 through Sunday, Sept. 21. The exhibition is co-curated by Gallery Director Darrell Taylor and UNI Professor of Art History Charles M. Adelman. Adelman will present a lecture titled "Highlights from the UNI Permanent Art Collection: Some Observations" on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m., in the Kamerick Art Building (KAB), Room 111. An opening reception will follow. The UNI Permanent Art Collection includes nearly 3,000 two- and threedimensional art objects acquired since the 1930s, primarily through donations. The vast majority of artworks are 20th century prints, paintings, photographs and sculpture representing a remarkable cross-section of nationally and internationally known artists, according to Taylor. Featured works include the Collection's Rembrandt etchings and Japanese Ukiyo-e prints as well as dye transfer photographs by Harold Edgerton. Signature pieces from the Collec-

tion will also be on display; for example, an abstract expressionist painting by Philip Guston titled "No. 6," a painting by Bauhaus artist and theorist Josef Albers titled "Homage to the Square: Blue Call," a watercolor by Dada artist George Grosz titled "Fancy Dress Ball," and the recently acquired premier limited edition re-issue of the "Szyk Haggadah," published by Historicana of Burlingame, Calif. Supplementing the exhibition will be works by celebrated national and international artists Käthe Kollwitz, Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso, Robert Rauschenberg, Keith Haring, Henri Matisse, Juane Quick-To-See Smith, Ken Little, Nina Ward and Jose deCreeft, among others. All events at the UNI Gallery of Art are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday; and noon to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The gallery is located at the northeast corner of Hudson Road and West 27th Street, Cedar Falls, on the main floor of the Kamerick Art Building. FREE CROW Detours Sheryl Crow

CROW OFFERING FREE ALBUM DOWNLOAD TO VOTERS:: Sheryl Crow is giving away free music - a tactic she calls the "Tupperware" party approach to inspiring young people to vote. The singer announced a plan to give a digital copy of her album "Detours" to the first 50,000 people who register three friends to vote.

"I hope people wake up and emotionally engage in issues," Crow said in an interview during a visit to Los Angeles. Crow's giveaway is a kickoff to Rock the Vote's voter registration drive. She is also offering a free download of her politically charged song "Gasoline" to anyone who logs onto the Rock the Vote Web site or anyone on the group's mailing list, said the organization's executive director Heather Smith. Crow, 46, was one of the founding artists of Rock the Vote 18 years ago. She said the "Detours" album fits perfectly into the group's cause since the lyrics touch on topics such as adoption, breast cancer, the war in Iraq, the environment and Hurricane Katrina. "It's about the issues that everyone's talking about, but there's a lot of hope," Crow said. "At this moment in my life, writing about anything else would be uninteresting and impossible because I feel such urgency."

JONAS BROTHERS POP CHARTS

A Little Bit Longer

Produced by John Fields (with Jon Lind and Kevin Jonas, Sr., serving as executive producers), "A Little Bit Longer" covers much musical and emotional ground, kicking off with the joyful jam "BB Good." Says Joe of the track, "It's a big sing-along song, and it's fun." The funky and danceable debut single, "Burnin' Up," keeps the party going, with Big Rob, the brothers' hefty security guard, rapping midtrack. "It's about this girl," adds Joe. "Maybe she's at a party, and you feel that immediate connection. You both know it's there." Though relentlessly upbeat, most songs on "A Little Bit Longer" explore star-crossed standoffs and missed romantic opportunities. Songs like "Shelf," the hard-rocking "Pushin' Me Away" and "One Man Show" survey love's unequal playing field, bad break-ups and the defiant isolation that follows. Their appeal is growing by leaps and bounds internationally as well. Jonas Brothers have seven platinum and gold certified records outside the US, as well as a sold out European tour, and sold out 80,000 seat stadium shows in Latin America. Sure, they had a blast with all of it. But bottom line: The Wycoff, N.J., natives are musical soul brothers every bit as much as they are blood brothers. For them, it has always been about the music.

TOADIES No Deliverance

After seven years of side projects, '90s radio conquerors the Toadies return with just their third album in 14 years.

Despite the vast spacing, the Toadies' vibe hasn't changed much at all. While the band is most known for its enigmatic smash hit "Possum Kingdom," the bulk of its songs are even harder-edged, with glass-shattering rhythm guitar riffs and pounding rhythms. This is especially true of "No Deliverance"—the band seems to be taking huge delight in reuniting, and its triumphant attitude shows in every riff and holler. It's also nice to hear that frontman Todd Lewis hasn't lost his lip, as such tracks as the grisly "Hell in High Water," the aptly named breakup ditty "Song I Hate" and the title track spit and bite with a gleeful fury. - Lavinia Jones www.vueonline.com

ust as a band makes their way from the garage to a bar gig to an arena and makes the climb from an unsigned band to rock stars, the owners of the Reverb are making a transition from the garage to mainstream. The Reverb, a staple of live music in downtown Cedar Falls, will be moving all assets and energy to their other business, Spicoli’s Rock Garden and Grill, which opened in January of this year. The new venue, located at 3555 University Avenue, will expand on the vast amount of local, regional, and national acts of all genres that the Reverb has brought to the cedar valley since 2001 and will add the great specials, spacious seating, and appetizing food brought by Spicoli’s. This new venture will officially be dubbed Spicoli’s Grill and the Reverb Rock Garden.

J

eo Kottke an acoustic guitarist widely known for his idiosyncratic finger-picking style, which draws on blues, jazz, and folk music influences, and his syncopated, polyphonic melodies. Leo’s work is often considered part of the American Primitivism movement, partly because he was signed to John Fahey's Takoma Records label. Kottke has overcome a series of personal obstacles including partial deafness and a nearly careerending bout with tendon damage to emerge as a widely-recognized master of his instrument. Kottke has collaborated on his records with his mentor John Fahey, as well as with Chet Atkins, Lyle Lovett, Margo Timmins, and Rickie Lee Jones. He has recorded tunes by Tom T. Hall, Johnny Cash, Carla Bley, Fleetwood Mac, The Byrds, Jorma Kaukonen, Kris Kristofferson, Randall Hylton, and many others. He is also a frequent guest on the radio variety program “A Prairie Home Companion.” Leon Redbone an singer and guitarist specializing in interpretations of early 20th-century music, including jazz and blues standards and Tin Pan Alley classics. Recognized for his trademark Panama hat, dark sunglasses, and bow tie, Redbone first appeared on stage in Toronto, Canada in the mid-1970s. While living in Canada in the early 1970s, Redbone began performing in public at Toronto area nightclubs and folk music festivals. At one point, it was rumored that he was actually comedian Andy Kaufman, who

sometimes took on other identities, or singer/guitarist Frank Zappa, who somewhat resembled Redbone. However, Redbone has performed since the deaths of Kaufman and Zappa, and the rumors have subsided. David Letterman once proposed that he was Don Novello, the comedian famous for playing Father Guido Sarducci. In 1974, Rolling Stone magazine ran a feature article on Redbone, a full year before he had a recording contract. His first album, On the Track, was released by Warner Bros. Records in 1975. He was introduced to a larger public as a semi-regular musical guest on NBC's Saturday Night Live throughout the late 1970s and into the 1980s. In a late-'70s appearance on the The Merv Griffin Show, he was introduced as "Andy Kaufman ...maybe or maybe not," alluding to the eccentric comedian as being his possible true identity. During the 1980s-90s Redbone was a frequent guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. It was apparent from the on-air exchanges between host and guest that Carson was a fan of Redbone's work. Leon was heard in the recent hit movie, Elf, as the voice of a snowman in this story of a human baby named Buddy (Will Ferrel).

With the changing of the music and bar scene in recent years, the owners of the Reverb (Cody

Winther and Rob Dunn) have decided to be proactive in the business rather than waiting for the business to change before them. Rising gas prices and a staggering economy mean that venues are going to have to provide only top quality entertainment along with additional sources of income such as other forms of entertainment, quality drinks, and great-tasting, reasonably priced food. Combining the forces of Spicoli’s and the Reverb accomplishes this goal. The venue will branch out and encompass all forms of live music and entertainment by having bigger national acts, local and regional original music, cover bands, and other forms of entertainment such as karaoke. The new venue will also feature a spacious stage and an upgraded sound system that will rival that of any other club in the Cedar Valley.

Starring: Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh, Melanie Thierry, Lambert Wilson and Gerard Depardieu

Andrew Caldwell, Drake Bell, Kevin Covais, Alona Tal, Ryan Pinkston Directed by: Deb Hagan

It is the not-too-distant future. Thousands of satellites scan, observe and monitor our every move. Much of the planet is a war zone; the rest, a collection of wretched way stations, teeming megalopolises, and vast wastelands punctuated by areas left radioactive from nuclear meltdowns. It is a world made for hardened warriors, one of whom, a mercenary known only as Toorop, lives by a simple survival code: kill or be killed. His latest assignment has him smuggling a young woman named Aurora from a convent in Kazakhstan to New York City. Toorop, his new young charge Aurora and Aurora’s guardian Sister Rebeka embark on a 6,000 mile journey that takes them from Eastern Europe, through a refugee camp in New Russia across the Bering Straight in a pilfered submarine, then through the frozen tundra of Alaska and Canada, and finally to New York. Facing obstacles at every turn, Toorop, the killer for hire, is tested like never before, in ways he could never have imagined- as he comes to understand that he is the custodian of the only hope for the future of mankind. For the first time in his life, Toorop has to make a choice: to make a difference or walk away and save himself. Too bad it came on the day he died.

After Kevin, a high school senior, gets dumped by his girlfriend for being too boring, he doesn't want to go to the freshman orientation weekend at Fairmont University, where they had planned to go together. But his best friends, Cater and Morris, convince him that the weekend away will help get his mind off her. Once there, one of the rowdiest fraternities on campus decides to recruit them as "pledges" in return for granting them access to the college party scene. Though forced to put up with the disgusting antics of fraternity brothers Teague, Bearcat, and Cooper, the guys meet sorority girls Kendall, Heather, and Amy, and sparks fly all around. But once Teague feels threatened by Kevin's new relationship with Kendall, he takes the pre-frosh humiliation to a greater level, and the guys decide to fight back, pulling a huge prank that lands them on top.

T

The life of an anonymous assassin takes an unexpected turn when he travels to Thailand to complete a series of contract killings. Joe (Nicolas Cage), a remorseless hitman, is in Bangkok to execute four enemies of a ruthless crime boss named Surat. He hires Kong (Shahkrit Yamnarm), a street punk and pickpocket, to run errands for him with the intention of covering his tracks by killing him at the end of the assignment. Strangely, Joe, the ultimate lone wolf, instead finds himself mentoring the young man while simultaneously being drawn into a tentative romance with a local shop girl. As he falls further under the sway of Bangkok's intoxicating beauty, Joe begins to question his isolated existence and let down his guard... just as Surat decides it's time to clean house.
