From Our Publisher

Women are creating holiday “miracles” everywhere in the world. The traditions of baking, decorating, shopping, cleaning…. adds additional stress to the already overworked, which can also bring on the bah humbug response of many, or what I like to call the “Holidaze”. This holiday season I am “choosing” to slow down enough to enjoy myself. My mother always said “ You can have it all…. just not all at the same time.” So this year, I am giving myself permission to cross off some of the items on my holiday to do list … I will not be frazzled, frantic, or frustrated! I would encourage you also, to not over commit. Don’t try to do too much too perfectly! Beat the monotony of your endless to do list and immerse yourself in the joy of your life…. choose the holiday traditions with the most meaning for you and let the others go. The principle of Giving and Receiving the flow of blessings in our life is related to our passing blessings along to someone else. You can give your money and /or your time to many well deserving charities. Look for ways to serve and bless others by practicing random acts of kindness. Do what you heart invites you to do, not just what life requires of you. Blessings to you and yours, Debra K. Collins Publisher/Managing Editor From Our Editor

This is our holiday issue of the magazine and it is filled with beautiful ads from our advertisers and great articles from our writers. Make sure to read Leslie Toldo’s article Happy What? Merry Who? for a comical look into her holiday adventures. Meredith Carson offers advise in her article, How to Prevent the Post-Holiday Overindulgence Hangover. Additionally, our cover girl, Deborah St.Hilaire, shares her positive outlook on life, explains her DivaSisters vision, and gives us a glimpse into her past. I hope you find holiday inspiration in these articles.

We are also excited to have the Meijer’s Health and Cooking Stage at the expo again this year. The appliances used on the stage are compliments of The Maytag Store; and the cabinetry and counter-tops are compliments of Pro Build. Susan Rosenhauer Editor

Audiobook

Former U.S. Army Captain Luis Carlos Montalván returned from two tours in Iraq a troubled, broken man. Suffering from a host of physical problems, dependent on nearly a dozen medications, plagued with agoraphobia, and tormented by nightmares, Montalván had personally and professionally hit rock bottom. And then he met Tuesday, a golden retriever from East Coast Assistance Dogs, a non-profit in upstate New York that trains dogs for the disabled. The loving companionship of this devoted, huge-hearted dog healed Montalván. Now Tuesday not only provides help with daily tasks, but gives Montalván the confidence and freedom he needs to maneuver daily life. This New York Times bestseller poignantly highlights the experiences and trauma of veterans, and the healing value of service dogs.

Author Curtis Sittenfeld captures the complicated nuances of the sister relationship with wicked accuracy. Kate and Violet Shramm are identical twins, yet they are wildly different; Kate is as conventional as Violet is eccentric. But more than blood binds them – they share an ability to predict the future. Yet even in this they differ; Violet embraces her psychic ability, and Kate shuns hers. Kate’s loyalty is put to the test when Violet goes on national television and predicts an earthquake that Kate does not foresee. When Violet becomes a laughingstock, Kate’s loyalty is tested. Sittenfeld masterfully demonstrates how, in the blink of an eye, even a loving relationship can turn from harmonious to adversarial. Unexpected plot twists show that ultimately, these sisters are more alike than they think.

Menopause Has Put Life On Pause

Ask any 40+ year old woman about her health, and menopause will usually be one of the first things mentioned. Menopause symptoms drive women crazy. What woman wants to open the bedroom window in the middle of winter, sleepwalk her way through her workday, or yell and scream at her loved ones at the drop of a hat? Women should be tired of getting prescriptions for depression just because they’re going through menopause. Menopause symptoms are horrible, and no woman should have to live with them. Well, with bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), now they don’t. BHRT has been repeatedly featured

“Hormonal imbalances can be caused by a variety of outside factors and lifestyle choices. Chemicals in our makeup, toxins in our air and water, preservatives in our foods, and heavy metal exposure can all contribute to hormonal imbalances. My goal for each patient that I see is to figure out not just what is wrong, but also why it’s going wrong. That way I can correct the underlying cause of the symptom and keep it from coming back. This is the true essence of preventive medicine.” Many physicians providing this therapy charge thousands of dollars and do not bill health insurance. However, Dr. Strauchman is dedicated to making bioidentical hormones affordable to everyone. “I believe that everyone should have equal access to this revolutionary therapy. Our offices are happy to bill our patients’ health insurance plans as a courtesy to them, so patients may be at least partially reimbursed for their treatment costs.” For more information on bio-identical hormones, or to schedule your initial one-hour consultation with Dr. Strauchman, please call (810) 694-3576. on Oprah, and is fully endorsed by the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. Unlike typical hormone replacement therapy drugs, like Premarin or Prempro, which are manufactured from horse urine and can increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancers, bio-identical hormones are made from natural plant-based ingredients like wild yams. Recent news stories have reported the increased risk of breast cancer from using Premarin and/or Prempro. These increased risks are not associated with natural bio-identical hormones. BHRT is now available right here in Grand Blanc at the Natural Wellness & Pain Relief Centers of Michigan. Dr. Megan Strauchman, the center’s medical director, is expertly trained in the diagnosis and treatment of symptoms that respond well to bio-identical hormones, such as hot flashes, mood swings, chronic fatigue, migraines, loss of libido, and “brain fog.” Dr. Strauchman is fellowship trained in anti-aging and regenerative medicine, and frequently uses BHRT to successfully Dr. Megan Strauchman - Medical Director Expertly trained in the diagnosis and treatment of symptons that respond to bio-identical hormones. treat her patients. Indigo Moon Photography eet Deborah St.Hilaire, a self-defined “seeker of truth and beauty with the eye of an artist, the heart of a romantic, and the soul of a storyteller.” She laughs equally at her own jokes and mistakes, explaining that, “I only learn ‘the hard way.’ But I am always me, now that I know who I am.” With her early years split equally between Ohio and California, she happily resides in Bay City, Michigan with her husband. In her professional life, Deb is a Women’s Life and Transitions Coach, Nutritional Consultant, Design Psychologist and award winning Speaker. Her book, “Divalution: The Evolution and Revolution of the Diva,” led her to launch The Divalution, LLC, uniting women through red wine and laughter for the mutual elation of humankind, and W4DIVAS.com. As an Internet radio show host, Deb’s skills in communicating, listening, and connecting support her mission of igniting “The Divalutionary Fire.” “I love coaching, especially with women who are transition such as career change or divorce. We work on their entire life picture, from the inside out. It is what I was born to do.” Deborah’s story lends perspective to her profession. As a baby, she was adopted into a very loving family.

Divas love without limit, laugh without control, support without judgment, mentor without jealously and live without regret.

“My childhood was absolutely splendid, with only a couple of exceptions.” Her parents owned a catering company, and having a family-run business meant they spent a lot of time together. “We went on marvelous summer vacations. Much of my young adulthood was spent writing poetry, hiking, and enjoying adventures while working two jobs so I could save money for travel. My dad gave me a sense of adventure without fear, teaching me that I could do anything. I took him at his word, leaving home at age of 22, and never looked back.” After twenty years in California, she returned to the Midwest, focusing on raising her sons while working as a Realtor. “Being a mother was and is very important to me. I am blessed with love, laughter, family and friends. Like all of us, I’ve known hurt and pain but I always go back to my blessings.” As one who “only learns the hard way, Deb has given purpose to her painful times, never wanting any woman to feel she is alone. “I teach women options for getting ahead, helping them hone their coping skills and creative thinking so they can bring their ‘whole selves’ to the workplace, regardless of what they do for a living.” Deborah states that the time has come to bring our nurturing natures into the workforce, becoming fearlessly feminine, comfortable in our skins, being our authentic selves in every situation. Her vision is a “social tribe” of supportive DivaSisters who help each other thrive (as we move along, we bring along).

Through coaching, speaking, writing, and personal example, Deb guides women toward bringing out the best version of themselves, kind, honest, generous, and authentic. She encourages women to raise their daughters as “Divalutionaries” so they grow up strong, self-aware, confident, and gentle. Deb was a natural for what she does today. She has always written, and Internet radio was a natural extension of what she loves doing. In 2012, she was approached to do a show based on her book, and the rest is history. “I’ll always be grateful for that first radio experience. The Divalution Show is nearing its one-year anniversary. We launched D4DIVAS to empower, enlighten and entertain Divas and those who love us. Now, through The Divalution, LLC, along with my partner, Tammie Weidner, and our marketing professional, Misty Heller, and W4Divas, we will reach more women with quality programming, dance music, and enjoyable, informative shows.” Like the rest of us, Deborah has prevailed over adversity and hardship. “My biggest struggle was not having enough food for my son and me. He would eat first then I would finish whatever was left. My coaching clients often appreciate that I went through a tough divorce in 1998 and lost my home when the market crashed in 2009. I too have ‘been there, done that,’ just like them.” We all have an opportunity to learn from the hard times and here’s Deb’s take on the issue: “Material possessions are worthless. The people in your life who love and understand you are priceless. With the help and support of others, we gain the strength to make it through anything. When friends comment on how strong I am, they don’t realize it is because of them.” In short, here is her personal inspiration for all of us: No matter what you are going through, you are not alone. Ask for and accept help, if or when you need it. You can do this. Grudges equate to self-inflicted misery. Divas know that forgiving is freeing. Let go of resentment before it takes root in your soul. Smile and laugh heartily as often as possible. If you feel down, do something to lift another Diva. You’ll both feel better. Write daily. Journaling is a way of expressing your feelings to a dear friend: you. Keep stretching and growing, and take time for healthy pampering. Deborah knows it takes time for us to learn that where we are is where we’re meant to be, doing what we are meant to do, and we need to be grateful for these opportunities. She says, “I believe that there are no coincidences. I believe that Divas love without limit, laugh without control, support without judgment, mentor without jealously and live without regret. I believe in loving kindness and that together, we can make this world a better place. Let’s do exactly that, now.”

Relationships Dear Shuntai,

The Gentle Knock on the Door

WOMEN2WOMEN MICHIGAN • www.w2wmichigan.com

We heard a soft knock on the door – the day Adrriana and Jaydin came to live with us. It was December 23rd, and the social worker at Ennis Center had told us that a sibling group needed a place to stay during the holidays…a nice foster home like ours. Because it was the holidays and these children were only seven and four, my husband and I agreed a few weeks of caring for them would be no big deal! We made it through the holidays with no drama. Santa came through at the last minute thanks to the generosity of many kind hearts, and the children were too afraid to change the peaceful flow of our daily routines for a few days. By day four, however, everything changed! The anger and fear that had built up inside of these children because of losing their mother and then being bounced from house to house – came raging our way. They tossed chairs, wet the beds, screamed when we said, “no,” and hurled disrespectful words our way. They tried everything they could to make us hate them, not because we deserved it, but because they hated themselves and their lives. They felt abandoned and unloved and the walls went up. Fortunately, time passed. School happened. We did the Disney thing and we embraced the sands of summer in ways they hadn’t known. Mostly, though, we kept to a routine and gave praise when it was warranted and tried to be patient as they worked things out in their broken little hearts. As a full year with the children approaches, my husband and I notice the changes – not just in the way they call us “mom” and “dad,” but in the way we feel about these little ones. Sometime in December 2014, we will stand before the local judge and declare our love for Adrriana and Jaydin. We will promise them that though we are from the Baby Boomer generation, we will provide for them and offer something that no one can ever take away: love, family, and home. The lessons learned have been many, but the one that stands out the  Helen Hicks is an awardwinning administrator and most is this: motivational speaker living in the If you hear a gentle knock Detroit area. I am having a difficult time. I haven’t spoken to my sister in years. Our relationship has always been rocky since I became my mother’s caregiver 5 years ago. Unfortunately, our mother died last year and my sister and I have not spoken in 4 years. The last time we saw each other we both said some hurtful things. I told her that I never wanted to see her again but now I regret everything I said in the heat of our argument. I am not at peace at the end of the day. How can I start the process of forgiveness? I really do love and miss my sister. Dear Sister, Did you know that forgiveness is spiritual? It is “an internal transformation” that begins in the heart. Forgiveness is about believing in something higher than yourself. Forgiveness is not about your sister and the words she and you used as weapons against one another. It’s about you loving yourself enough to free yourself from the invisible bondage of un-forgiveness. It is not easy to forgive when you’re hurting. In the process of forgiveness, you will experience a range of emotions, you will revisit the pain, and you will feel discouraged at times. However, at the end you’ll display strength, find hope, and you will eventually “let go and let God” (or whatever higher power you believe in). Discovering the power of forgiveness will free you and your sister to live a life of unhindered purpose. Love your life or live trying.

I won’t force a piece but I do wait for just the right elements for certain projects to come to fruition. One of my best sellers at shows are the magnets I make out of lids from old chew tins.” Lamphier shows a variety of genres for her subject matter. She mostly enjoys creating “funny little animals in sometimes precarious circumstances”, such as her elephant suck in a tree. One of her favorite pieces is a depiction of a crow skeleton perched on a branch. When asked what inspired that piece, Susan tells a story of finding a dead crow this past winter. She goes on to say that a few weeks later, she had a vivid dream of drawing the skeleton crow. “The very next night, I sat down and began to draw the skeleton crow from my dream. It was as though that image was burning through my hand and onto the paper. I couldn’t stop. I stayed up half the night until it was finished. I added some watercolor the next

Experiencing the wonder-full

ast Christmas, the very best thing I did to celebrate was to take a walk. You might remember that Christmas 2013 was unlike anything we had ever experienced. Stuck in the Polar Vortex and without power, most of us hunkered down in front of fireplaces or temporarily moved in with those who had them. Frozen over, the sub-zero world outside felt wild and dangerous, which was exactly why I needed to experience it for myself. On Christmas Eve, I coaxed my two youngest kids, both teenagers, to join me on an adventure. We bundled up and headed out, not knowing what we might encounter, but needing to shake off our cabin fevers all the same. We headed, of course, to the woods. It’s impossible for me to enter the wooded trail by my home without thinking of Robert Frost. “Whose woods these are, I think I know…” and “One could do worse than become a swinger of birches,” both lines from two of my favorite Frost poems, echo through my mind whenever I step in. What we experienced that day was our own personal Narnia, an iced-over world that sparkled under a brilliant blue sky. We absorbed the once-in-lifetime sight with the wonder of small children. We stepped carefully across the slippery pavement, stopping often just to listen to the crackling song of branches covered in ice. We tasted freshly fallen snow and took off our gloves to gently touch the tall grasses that looked as though they’d been encased in glass. I breathed in the sharp cold and exhaled a prayer of thanks at the pure majesty of it all.

This was where I found Christmas in its purest form. The idea that it could have been found on a sale rack at Macy’s or in an Amazon shopping cart seemed obscene in comparison. I couldn’t help but wonder why I had once again been tricked into the holiday rat race when the true light of the season was waiting there, free for the taking, all along. In a frenetic world that demands we meet its ever-increasing expectations, it seems that me that we need to go renegade and insist that we get to define the holidays for ourselves. Perhaps we need less things and more nature … less giving of gifts and more giving of ourselves … less buying and more charity … less activities and more friendship … less engagement with the clamoring world and more soul building. Perhaps we need to step out and away from the pressure of all that screams for our attention and decide for ourselves how the holidays will be spent. Truth is, I have no recollection of the gifts I placed under the tree that Christmas Eve night or what was opened the morning after, although much time, money and energy was spent gathering those items. What I do remember—and what I will remember until my dying day—are those moments spent with my kids in the glittering woods on that holy day. It was bitter cold and a bit perilous, but it reminded me that I was alive. Jimmy Stewart was right, it is a wonderful life. It’s up to us to decide how we might live it.

“Reading about nature is fine, but if a person walks in the woods and listens carefully, he can learn more than what is in books, for they speak with the voice of God.”~George Washington Carver

A Pleasing Combination

20

usic is always the first thing I think of when I hear the word harmony. The beautiful blended voices of Peter, Paul & Mary, Crosby, Stills & Nash and our church choir fill me with rhythm and wonder. How do they do that? These seemingly uncomplicated combinations of notes produce such incredible music and I am in awe! Harmony can be defined as a pleasing combination of elements. It may be musical sounds, colors on a palette or the conditions of a peace treaty. The magical arrangement that produces a positive outcome is the crucial element. So it’s worth saying: Harmony is NOT sameness. The elements may be strikingly close or similar, but they are not the same. What is the magic in that?? Harmony is the beauty we create by weaving difference in delightful ways. In the song Ebony and Ivory – Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney used the piano as a musical metaphor to sing about racial harmony. They urged us to intentionally orchestrate our lives to create a civilized society. The most humorous take on the word harmony I found was on the back of a Big Easy Roller Girl in New Orleans. Her Derby name was ‘HarmaKnee’ - so ironically hilarious! But I digress … The Holidays will soon be upon us and we long for the peaceful coexistence they promise. The TV shows, commercials, carols, smells, and bright lights entice us to hope – promising this time things will be better. We’ll find that elusive harmony, kinship and sweetness at the family gatherings and be filled with joy. We hold fast to this image until the veil begins to slip, tension rises and discord returns. Finding ourselves out-oftune and feeling off-key, our expectations are dashed and our hearts break a little more. Yet, Mother Nature is there holding us, laying down a blanket of snow and turning the light down to soften the sounds and hush the harshness. Mother Nature is so still,

so peaceful during the Holidays you can almost feel the Earth’s heart beat. Lay with her. Living in harmony begins within. When we create a pleasing combination of the things we love: kindness, compassion, joy, respect – we create harmony within. Then when life gets difficult or frustrating and we feel out of whack, we have a wellspring of harmony to tap into. We can center and reconnect with who we are and what we love. A walk in nature, a good meal or a full belly laugh can help re-center us. But my healing balm is music which is potent enough to reconnect me to my soul. Its power is truly worthy of a doctor’s prescription. We live more fully in harmony by creating our own symphony of family, friends and neighbors. By finding just the right arrangement of the illogical aspects of our lives, the contrary, obstinate, and uncooperative with what we love, we can create a delightful harmony. Writer Audre Lorde encourages us, “Only by learning to live in harmony with your contradictions can you keep it all afloat.” As difficult as it may be we have a better chance for harmony if we leave our expectations and should’s behind. Instead, let’s gift wrap those things we love about ourselves! The chimes are ringing and the music is playing. Let’s plan on spending each  Elaine Stenger, Ph.D. day living in is the Director of College harmony with Application Advantage. As the famous Andy Williams song says, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, but let’s also admit, it can be one of the most stressful. The message of the holidays should be to surround yourself with loved ones and recognize what is most important. However, they often become about parties, shopping, baking, cleaning and entertaining which leads to a tremendous amount of undue stress. Stress, anxiety and depression are not that uncommon during this time because people often experience heightened emotions. In fact, the American Psychological Association has found that nearly half of all women in the United States experience heightened stress during the holidays. This can be dangerous and put their health at risk. Stress, anxiety and depression can also trigger overeating and binging. These emotions may result in drinking excessive alcohol, sugar cravings, excess caffeine, skipping exercise and lack of sleep. But with practical tips, you can help stop these overwhelming emotions in their track and begin enjoying holiday traditions! You must first acknowledge your feelings and recognize your body’s fight or flight response releasing an abundance of cortisol. Relaxation is key and it is very important to take deep breaths and incorporate meditation. Mindful meditation is especially important, allowing you to realize what’s truly important to you and your family. Be grateful. When friends and family become overwhelming, remember how lucky you are to have such amazing people in your life. There are individuals out there who do not have a strong network of family or friends and the holidays become a time of isolation and loneliness. If you are feeling you are alone, please reach out to your community, religious organizations or other

22

social organizations. They can offer support and companionship. Volunteering your time to help others is also an excellent way to lift your spirits and broaden your friendships. Throw perfection out the door. Remember that everything doesn’t have to be perfect. As a practicing physician, father and husband, along with managing a medial lifestyle show, I have to balance many duties and challenges. I am careful to be mindful of the task at hand, whether it be hosting a television show or playing with the kids, understanding that all things can’t be perfect when meeting multiple challenges. Move naturally. Exercise is the best way to overcome stress during the holidays or really any other time of the year. Research shows that physical activity not only boosts your energy levels, but also boosts your mood. Exercise also reduces anger, tension, fatigue and confusion. Regardless of your busy holiday schedule, it is imperative not to forget to make exercise and activity a part of your day. Physical activity increases production of endorphins, your body’s feel-good neurotransmitters. If you become inactive, it may result in depression and fatigue after just a few days. Eat whole and organic foods. During this time of year, you will be tempted with sugar-filled, processed foods all across the shopping malls. In order to be energetic, focused and happy, it’s best to eat whole foods such as organic fruits, vegetables and lean protein (such as fish and organic chicken). Also choose to cook with healthy fats such as olive oil and incorporate flax seed, legumes, nuts and seeds into your meals. Eat until you are 80% full. With so many tempting treats, you have to be careful not to overeat. If you eat until you’re 80% full, you can maintain a healthy weight, even during the holidays. Folks who eat moderately are able to live a fulfilled life, enjoying their food without suffering the damaging effects of obesity. Finally, be generous. The best way to remain balanced, content and cheerful, is to focus on generosity. From family and friends to neighbors and co-workers, you can be generous with your compliments. You can generously offer to do a loved one’s errand, give a handwritten letter or homemade Christmas card. When you are creative with your gifts and thank you notes, people will appreciate your authentic and heartfelt sentiments. The holiday season is extremely special for my family as we prepare to celebrate. My wife, children and I enjoy spending time with loved ones, trimming the tree and understanding the true joy of giving. To find Ask Dr. Nandi in your area visit the website www.askdrnandi.com. Healthy Eating With Susan 

The truffle recipe that I am sharing this issue is very simple to make, and is a healthy option as far as desserts go. I find it best to purchase these ingredients at your local health food store, as it may be difficult to find them at your local grocery market. The sweetener used is agave, which comes from the same plant that is used to make tequila. Being about 25% sweeter than refined sugar, a little can go a long way. It is also gluten free and has a low glycemic index. The chocolate used is powdered raw cacao, which is free of any sugar or fillers. Raw cacao provides you with an exceptional flavor and a healthy dose of antioxidants, magnesium and iron. Additionally, it is also important to use unsweetened coconut, which is free from any added sugar.

24

Truffles Chocolate Coconut Truffles ½ cup coconut oil/warmed to soften ¾ cup agave nectar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon Himalayan sea salt 1 cup dried unsweetened shredded coconut 2 cups raw cacao powder, sifted

Instructions: Using a mixer, blend coconut oil, agave, vanilla, and salt. Add coconut and blend until smooth. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and stir in cacao powder. Place bowl in refrigerator for about 10 minutes to set slightly. Remove from refrigerator and roll into 1 tablespoon size balls. Roll each truffle in the coating of your choice. Place in individual liners, and store in the refrigerator. Topping Options: cacao powder, coconut, dried chopped fruit, nuts such as pecans, pistachios, or walnuts.

Happy what? Merry who?

I ran in to a chain department store to get some dental floss today. I had a coupon, quick in and out, right? Wrong. First of all, when I walk in any of the big name discount department stores, I should always carry a lunch, because there is never anything quick about it. I do go in and eventually I walk back out. Today, there was a distraction I never could have anticipated: Thanksgiving ornaments. Yes, exactly like Christmas ornaments, made for a tree, but they were clearly Thanksgiving themed. I don’t know why I am surprised, really. Sandwiching some Thanksgiving themed knick-knacks between the Halloween and Christmas displays makes it a little less creepy for the shopper. Halloween villages and light displays are becoming more popular, so it is not that much of a stretch to imagine six foot, inflated pilgrim and turkey yard décor. I was seriously considering the turkey sitting on a pumpkin glittery candlestick holders (which, are not located anywhere close to the dental floss that I went shopping for in the first place). Then a still, small voice inside my head said, “No more.” I get being festive; my Christmas tree goes up the day after Thanksgiving every year. I do the whole house up. My husband hides, terrified by my indecision-fueled rants about where to put “Fat Santa” this year. “Where was it last year?” I want to know because I loved it there, and it was perfect. Maybe I can find a picture from last year and solve this mystery. Before I know it, I will have spent hours of my life, putting up décor that will only be up for a month, tops. Never mind, how much I will spend on little “this and that’s” to insure that I out-do whatever it was I can’t seem to remember doing when I decorated last year. I don’t even think it is the effort and time put in that bothers me. I think it is how lost I can get on the packaging of the holiday, that I cannot seem to find my way back to the real reason I love my favorite holiday in the first place. Beyond the obvious, “what about the meaning of the holiday” issue, lies the added, unnecessary anxiety, during an already stressful time of year. I hear my friends worry about getting their cards out “on time”, and whether they should get a “gift” for so-and-so, just in case so-and-so gets one for them. It’s not about sincere giving, it’s about not offending anyone. I do it, too. Have I made enough cookies? Is it too early or too late to do fudge? What is “her” frosting recipe? I think it may be better than mine?

Are my cookies dry? Is this year’s giftwrap selection sending the right message? Are my bows straight? Will the kids feel shortchanged? The list could go on… and on. By definition, a holiday is “a day of festivity or recreation when no work is done.” It is a day. It is an opportunity to be with family. It is not a contest. It is not supposed to be about having something on hand that appears to be a gift for anyone who might drop by unexpectedly. Breathe. Let’s all just breathe. Oh, and if you have a “Fat Santa” weighing on your mind, too, just know that if you can’t remember where you put it last year, no one else will either. They are too worried about how many extra bottles of body lotion to buy on sale, so they have an emergency gift in case you stop by with that pair of socks you bought, “just in case”. We put the pressure on, which means, we are the only ones who can take it off. Just do it-and truly have a happy holiday season, whenever yours begins. (Oh, but if you want to make extra cookies for, say, me, I am okay with that.)

4 Ways to Avoid

Business 

Burnout

The holidays are upon us and it would be so easy to feel overwhelmed and burned out. Nearly every successful entrepreneur I know has grappled with it. So, before you hit a wall, try these four techniques: Truly disconnect. In today’s business world, we’re constantly tethered to our “always-on” office connections. As a result, when we truly disconnect, the effect can be extraordinary. You might worry you’ll miss something incredibly urgent. But, if you really want to feel your best you need to completely quiet your world for at least awhile.

1 2 3 4

Refocus on your successes. Focusing your energy on what’s wrong only creates an endless spiral of more and more negativity. Instead, make a list of every “victory” you’ve had during the year, quarter, month, or day. There’s a good chance you’ll see significantly more good than bad in your life. Set a major goal that you cannot achieve on your own. I’m talking about setting what Jim Collins called a “Big Hairy Audacious Goal” in his book, Built to Last. This is the kind of goal that rallies the troops and gets them to transcend what they, themselves, thought was impossible. Get back to the fun. How many times have you said, “I’d love to, BUT I’m too busy.” That’s total B.S. What you’re really saying is you haven’t made that activity a priority in your life, or you feel guilty about having fun. For many of us, work is our default setting unless we have something else scheduled. Don’t settle for enjoying life only when you can squeeze it in between business. Put fun activities, rewarding experiences, and exceptional adventures on your calendar and protect them like you would any other appointment.

Do You Own Your Name On Google? If you’re like me, you’re kind of a cyber stalker. You meet someone new; you Google their name to see what they’ve done, what connections and common touch points you might have. (No? Just me?) When it comes to your own name, do you know what other people see? Go ahead. Google your name right now. I’ll wait. And for the Big Question: do you dominate the Top Ten? Each Google search returns ten results per page – if you want potential clients to find you, you gotta own the first page. (Multiple pages are even better!) When potential partners, clients or influential contacts search for you, it’s important that they find you at the top. Owning all ten search results is an indicator that you and your business are legit. That you’ve been around. That you’ll continue to be around. That you’re out there, making things happen (publishing, speaking, being involved in organizations, in the community and the like.) The same is true for your business name. Your name and your business name are your brands, the mental real estate that you own in other people’s minds.

to Finding Career Harmony

32

You aren’t alone feeling unfulfilled in your career, we all do at some point. I preach a lot about taking big leaps to pursue your passion, purpose, or mission; whatever name you want to call it. But the biggest struggle people typically have is defining what that is exactly. Or what about the person who isn’t quite ready to take a big risk to dump an average career that simply pays the rent? How do you happily stand in the “in between” until you are ready to leap into the most amazing career of your life? The trick is to find Career Harmony. Career Harmony (noun): A pleasing combination or arrangement of different things to make up your life’s work. Let me first say, this won’t be easy. No my dear, you are going to have to work to be happy. Starting now, there will be no more excuses for being miserable in your job. Understand? (This would be where you nod your head up and down in agreement). Here are five strategies to create career harmony to figure out your true passion while building strong wings so when you are ready to jump, you’ll soar above the clouds. 1. School Yourself – If you aren’t moving forward, you’re standing still and that means being stuck. Pick up a class, take Spanish lessons, learn a new computer skill, or pursue additional certifications. Start immersing yourself in your new dream field while you’re still working in your old one. Hey now, that’s an idea and I’m not even a rocket scientist. 2. Take Initiative – See something burning at work that drives you insane and think you have a better way? Pitch it to management, take charge, make a difference, rewrite policies, or develop solutions. Rather than sulk and whine about the status quo, do something about it already. 3. Side business – Do you lose sense of time when you are dabbling in your hobby? I’m willing to bet it brings you immense joy and makes you giggle. Note to self, this is passion.

Figure out how you can make money doing what you love to do, just for a few hours a week and even if it only covers a tank of gas. One step will lead to another and may lead to that dream career which allows you to work from home in your pajamas. I’m not joking. I would never joke about pajamas. 4. Network - Brush your hair, step up your game and step out to meet people. Target people who are doing what you want to do, for companies that you admire. Find out what makes them and the company successful, what’s the culture like, or an average day? What’s the best thing about their job, the challenges, up and downs? You might just find your passion or on the flip side, your dream isn’t what you thought it was. In that case, it’s time to find another dream! 5. Tinker – Toying with a new career? Find someone to job shadow or volunteer time to work – for free. Yes, for free. I didn’t stutter. You can’t put a price tag on an opportunity to gain experience in your potential dream career. Offering a trial basis may just set you apart from the hundreds of other people who are just dreaming about a change. You, the fabulous one, are actually pursing it. The point is, enough waiting for the clouds to part and angels to sing bestowing you with the answer to solve your career dilemma – take action now! I dare you.

MCC’s New President:

WOMEN2WOMEN MICHIGAN • www.w2wmichigan.com

Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea

36

The incoming President of Mott Community College, Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, will be the first woman, and first African-American, to serve in the institution’s 91-year history. With Dr. WalkerGriffea as President, Lenore Croudy as Chair of the Board of Trustees and Dr. Amy Fugate as Vice President of Academic Affairs, most of the top leadership of MCC is female. The student body of MCC is also predominately female, making it one of the best and safest higher education options for women. Walker-Griffea said she became interested in MCC after years of hearing about the college’s student success initiatives. “MCC was focusing on student success early on, before student success was a term that colleges were using,” she said. “That stood out to me. I was intrigued at how the college was able to work very creatively and innovatively to ensure that their students were doing well and completing courses at the rate they should be.” Having relatives in the area, Walker-Griffea understands the challenges the community faces as it reinvents itself. She believes Flint is moving in a positive direction, and wants to continue MCC’s role in the revitalization of Flint and Genesee County. Walker-Griffea most recently served as Senior Vice President for Student Services at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland. She has also served in several administrative capacities, as a counseling faculty member and as an instructional faculty member. A native of Tulsa, she earned a Bachelor of Science from Oklahoma State University, a Master of Education from Virginia State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Texas Woman’s University in Denton. She is a member of the American Association of Community Colleges Commission on Diversity, Inclusion and Equity, and serves as Vice President for Resources and Development of the American Association for Women in Community College. She has also served as a member of on-site and off-site review committees for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges accreditation reaffirmation process.

Don’t Tell My Wife I Wrote This 

Christmas Insanity

WOMEN2WOMEN MICHIGAN • www.w2wmichigan.com

I don’t beg too many questions. But I have to beg this one. Why is it that men have an easier time letting go of Christmas? Now, I don’t mean to play the Scrooge to your Tiny Tim here. I enjoy my Christmas as much as the next guy. It’s my favorite holiday, with Opening Day of Deer Season pulling in a close second. And, in case you are of the belief that I suffered as a child with parents who bought me practical gifts and informed me that Santa was a fake before I’d hit the age of three, nothing could be farther from the truth. I was the child who began playing the Firestone Christmas albums before Halloween and didn’t let up until the last piece of fudge was gone. I lived Christmas. I mean, I didn’t even bother to go to sleep on Christmas Eve. I stayed up all night editing my Christmas list, just in case I needed a last second change. But I let go. Now I wait until Thanksgiving to launch into a neverending string of Christmas songs. And now it’s Harry Connick, Jr. and Vince Lombardi. The Firestone albums aren’t available on MP3. I’ve checked. I don’t stay up all night any more. I go to bed at nine like every other fortysomething on the planet and threaten my children with early gift returns should they rouse me before 8am on Christmas Day. I’ve matured in my Yuletide behavior. The women in my life, starting with my mother on down the line, have only modified the level of intensity they put behind their Christmas efforts. Modified, which here means they’ve lost their freaking minds. Seriously, do you really think men are responsible for Black Friday sales that begin on Wednesday? Or in-store knife fights over the hot new Arrest Me Elmo doll? If you’ve never been to Times Square, you can just ignore that reference. When women look at wall-to-wall sparkly presents and pretty red ribbons, they see joy and happiness and ghosts of their Christmasses past. Men see more crap we gotta put together, store, and fix. Again now. This predisposition toward less objects in our homes does not mean that men have no Christmas spirit. We got lots of that stuff. It’s why we buy you the Mrs. Claus outfits from Victoria’s Secrets every year and get a little weepy whenever the Budweiser Clydsdales save a puppy or some happy crap like that.

42

We love Christmas. We’d love it more if we could find our chair after the feeding frenzy that is Christmas morning. We’d love it more if our wives didn’t spend the day after Thanksgiving through December 24th crying nightly because Christmas just isn’t the same any more. As if the vestige of manliness to whom you are married or betrothed isn’t enough reason for you to celebrate the season of joy and peace. Now, I want y’all ladies to enjoy your season. Christmas is, after all, for the moms. Without you, I probably would have come home one day to find my Firestone albums scattered across the front lawn in a million pieces somewhere around November sixth. And I would have grown up believing that the Three Wise Men came bearing gifts of salted peanuts and beer. For your defense of time-honored traditions, I thank you. Let’s just keep a clear path to the old man’s favorite chair on Christmas morning. Because, really, our favorite gift is to sit comfortably with a cup of coffee and thank God for our beautiful families.
