The Minnis‌. truly, a hidden gem on the Kent coastline.

The Minnis Bar and Restaurant in Birchington is a hidden gem perched proudly on the seafront of a picturesque and unspoilt stretch of the Kent coastline. The minnis offers customers an impressive range of menus from light meals and bar snacks to sophisticated a la carte. On Sundays there is a special menu combining elements of the a la carte menu with the more traditional Sunday roasts. There is even a weekday menu that offers two courses for £12. One of the things that makes The Minnis so special is the care and attention that goes into each dish from the bar snacks to desserts. Everything is extremely well thought out and designed to deliver the wow factor. Jason Freedman, the owner and head chef at The Minnis is dedicated to making sure that all of his dishes are prepared using local and free-range produce as far as possible to the point where his beef is sourced just five miles away. He has also started curing and pickling his own produce, making his own corned beef, salami, pastrami and salt beef to name a few. Jason is also working on a platter of Kentish cheeses that will be available from the autumn. But the real wonder to behold is the seafood platters. Made for two people to share you can opt for a hot or cold platter of fresh fish and seafood. We went for the hot one and were not disappointed. We were presented with a huge tray of hot delights from crispy fried cockle popcorn, prawns and oysters to plaice, mackerel and lobster all simply prepared and beautifully arranged. There was more than enough for two people, even those with big appetites would struggle to finish but we gave it our very best attempt because it was all too lovely to leave. The food at The Minnis is enhanced by its fantastic location. Overlooking the sea it is in the perfect position to enjoy the full sunset experience. I would recommend taking a camera. So imagine a summer evening watching the sun set with a chilled glass of wine and a platter of delicious seafood. It doesn’t get much better than that! Open Daily - 10am-11pm - 7 days a week The Minnis Bar and Restaurant, The Parade, Birchington CT7 9QP, 01843 841 844 4

The Duck Inn ‘Local History & Good Food’

The Duck Inn, Petts Bottom, Nr Bridge Jon and Vicky have just started their fourth year at the famous Duck Inn. A year ago they varied their menus and now have a bar menu with all the old favorites (steak and ale pie, Beer battered cod and chips, slow cooked BBQ pork ribs, etc and a restaurant menu which hosts a selection of locally sourced, cooked to order dishes (stuffed chicken, braised lamb, spit roasted Berkshire black pork, etc). The growing trade at the Duck Inn means promotion for their kitchen assistant to second chef and with some fantastic ideas for the summer menu he’ll soon be on Chef Jon’s heels! The Duck recently signed up to the dining club, Taste Card, which offers it’s members a discount at certain restaurants. The Duck Inn also caters for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, etc which cater for every appetite.

..and why not hear what their customers say….Reviews from a few Diners… With high expectations I attended the James Bond night at the Duck Inn and I was not disappointed. Arriving at the venue we were greeted with an Aston Martin Vanquish and various other attendees in Dinner Jackets, Cocktail Gowns and an array of villains straight from a Sean Connery poster. In my professional experience it always seems to be a fine line between character and caricature when attending or conceptualizing a tribute night, but the Landlord & Landlady had clearly enthused their passion for the subject into this event. The menu would not have looked out of place in a central London Hotel (at twice the price), the singer, producing her own take on the movie songs was more than just a tribute and the climatic firework display seemed to come straight from one of the movies that inspired this night. Personally, I can’t wait for the sequel because the bar has been set and like all good sequels …now needs to be exceeded. Robert Richardson, ..and another review after this May’s Beer Festival. The Duck inn, Beer and Cider Festival is held annually at Petts Bottom, Nr Bridge. One of many events at the Duck.. I met up with a friend and we headed down there on Friday night to check it out. It was obvious as soon as we arrived that this was a popular event by the amount of people already in the beer tent. Stacks of us were waiting to get in and get drinking, and not all of us were the bearded old men of ale drinking stereotype! Good beer is for everyone. The Ship Inn, Dymchurch At the heart of the community, this 500 year old pub is steeped in history but the new owners Elaine and Gary Dennis have big plans to bring it into the 21st century without losing any of the atmosphere. Since taking over last December Elaine and Gary have already put their stamp on the place with a revamped menu and much needed refurbishments. With separate bar and restaurant areas there is a place for locals and visitors to relax and play pool with a drink and a bar snack as well as a restaurant available for full meals. There is a new chef on board the Ship who is locally sourcing meat, fish and vegetables which are chosen in season and used to create hearty, traditional and great value meals such as fish and chips, steak and ale pudding and liver and bacon. There is also a full Sunday lunch menu and various themed nights to enjoy. The pub was also recently awarded a “tasty food award. The ship Inn is a five minute walk from the beach and has a safe garden with an outdoor seating area making it the perfect family location. Above the pub there are also eight rooms available to let if a visit to the pub should turn into a mini break away from it all. Elaine and Gary are far from finished with their transformation. They have plans to provide their customers with live music a TV and a play area for the kids. This place is really going to keep getting better with age.

Revealing the new sound of St Mary’s Church Ashford The first performance programme for Ashford’s new sacred and shared arts space, St Mary’s Church, has been revealed – with some big names on the list. ‘Revelation St Mary’s’ is the inaugural arts programme for St Mary’s Church, Ashford, offering a series of quality events to boost the borough’s arts offer and celebrate the completed refurbishment and revisioning of one of Ashford’s best loved historical landmarks. The arts trust is delighted to have secured Super Furry Animals’ front man Gruff Rhys, multipleBRIT Award winner Eddi Reader, BBC Radio 2 multi-award winner Chris Wood, and folk singer Johnny Flynn for their first season, along with the award winning two man show of former MP Tony Benn and folk singer Roy Bailey, and a unique one off concert by London’s Aurora Orchestra. For many years, St Mary’s has functioned as both a place of worship in the town centre and a community arts venue, hosting performances and exhibitions each year from local and international artists. In 2009, the church successfully bid for £1.7m funding to carry out substantial renovation and refurbishment works to the church, to upgrade its use as a vibrant arts venue while still preserving its function as a treasured place of worship. With funding from Ashford Borough Council, Arts Council England and Kent County Council, the church’s arts trust, in partnership with the Parochial Church Council, aims to establish a centre of excellence for the arts where Ashford’s growing community can experience high quality performance and exhibition. The refurbishment works are due to complete this summer, with the first performances taking place in July. We hope you will enjoy our first season and the many Revelations to come! Margate Winter Gardens 2011 will be a very special year for the Winter Gardens as it celebrates its 100th Birthday. Thanet Leisureforce in conjunction with Thanet District Council have launching an appeal fund to raise money for this much loved landmark. The appeal funding is aimed at providing funds for essential works to the building prior to the celebrations in August 2011. The Appeal has currently raised £40K and an additional contribution from the Council has seen the £150K repairs to the rear wall completed. Further fund raising events will be taking place throughout the year and a range of Centenary merchandise will be launched very shortly. Many shows and stars appeared at the Winter Gardens in the Post-War period. For example in 1947 Webster Booth and Anne Zieglar, Kay Cavendish ‘Itma’, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, Lynne. The programmes of this period continue to read as a who’s who of the Entertainment World. In the 1960’s the style of entertainment offered by the Winter Gardens saw many successful visits of many pop artistes like Helen Shapiro, Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas. However, the most famous visitors appeared at the Winter Gardens in July 1963; they were the Beatles, destined to become a legend in their own lifetimes The Winter Gardens is still a magnificent building and bills some of the top entertainment ranging from Ocean Colour Scene , Status Quo, Jim Davidson, Graham Norton and David Essex to name but a few. Major investment to improve and modernise the seating and staging area is underway and will encourage these top acts to use the Theatre in the future Thanet Leisureforce, are making a huge difference not only in Thanet but across England in the entertainment world bringing much needed change to keep one of England’s finest theatres going into the 21st Century. The Keppel Takes It’s Music Seriously…. The Admiral Keppel is a characterful pub which features varied live music every weekend, a laid back local crowd are drawn in by the gigs! The place has a relaxed vibe, a broad minded range of beers plus a couple of guest hand-pulls. The Keppel is slightly off the beaten track away from the hustle and bustle of the town, and for many, this is a distinct advantage. The beer garden has plenty of outdoor seating for those balmy summer nights. One of the regular musicians appearing at the Admiral Keppel is Gary Emanuel, keyboard and guitar player… and was born with the natural ability to sing soul! A great lover of soul, motown and reggae but he can sing almost anything, as too can Charlie, another regular local musician, currently the front woman of rock covers band Broken. Things to see & do... PO’ Girl … Broadstairs Folk Week 5TH AUGUST CONCERT MARQUEE

The interplay between Allison Russell, Awna Teixeira, and Mikey “Lightning” August is truly something to behold. They are distinct voices with incredible harmonies; multiple instrumentalists who bring the perfect sound to each song and songwriters who pen poetic tunes you’ll find yourself humming. Po’Girl showcases a wide array of instruments-from gutbucket bass, accordion, clarinet, banjo, dobro, guitar, to electric bass, glockenspiel, piano, harmonica, bicycle bells, drums-- and they all frequently trade off instruments with each song. Their fluid and joyous musicality is one of the group’s most endearing and irresistible features. Suffice to say Po’Girl makes 21st Century roots music, urban roots - never derivative, not faithfully aping a beloved tradition. Russell, Teixeira, Sidelinger, and August don’t re-hash the old forms, they reshape and reinvigorate them for new ears. Like genuine gypsies, they wander and play - out on the international road bringing their unique brand of pan North Americana to a widespread audience 250 to 300 days of the year. Always restless, more often than not bone-tired, they write their flashes of sadness, their loss, their good love, their faint dreams of home into songs that matter deeply to them. Like any good art, they are little acts of self-rescue. So you should listen. You aren’t much different from them, and who couldn’t use a little rescuing these days? “This is an incredible band that presents its music, lyrics and arrangements in a totally original manner. The balance and range of instrumentation linked with ever so tight vocal work is unsurpassable” ~ Phil Brown, BBC

Broadstairs Folk Week 5TH -12TH AUGUST Broadstairs folk week has become one of the most highly anticipated events in Kent over the summer for locals and visitors alike. Both professionals and amateurs join together for a week of celebrating talent and culture. From Morris Dancers on the promenade to bands playing in one of the many pubs and bars and the bandstand, there is always something going on to watch or join in with. This year promises to be just as eventful as ever with many varieties of acts confirmed such as 4 Square, Barbara Dickson , Belshazzers feast, the Spooky Men’s chorale and many more. This year will also present a revamped concert marquee where all of the headline acts will perform. The festival is always helped along by local businesses with pubs providing live music and the ice cream parlours stepping up to the high demand and always delivering. The ever popular craft fair will be making its usual appearance on Victoria Gardens. The fair will open at 10am and stay open all through the day until 10pm all through the week. It is free to enter and is a great place to find an unusual treat for yourself or to find that unique present like musical instruments, pottery, jumpers and hand made cards to name a few. Folk week really is a great time to see Thanet at its very best, with a whole community embracing culture and inviting visitors to do so with them. 34

Th 14THExperience the ‘Miracle of Dunkirk’ Cut into the chalk of the White Cliffs beneath Dover Castle lies an underground network of tunnels. It was from here in 1940, at the start of the Second World War, that Admiral Ramsay and his team successfully coordinated the rescue of 338,000 soldiers stranded on the beaches at Dunkirk. In June 2011, English Heritage launched an exciting new visitor attraction. The Secret Wartime Tunnels experience evokes those dark days of 1940 via dramatic sets that reveal the countdown to war, the lightning strike of the German army across Western Europe, and the trapping of the British Army on the open beaches and shattered town of Dunkirk. Walk through the tunnels to see, hear, and feel the danger of Operation Dynamo, the role played by Ramsay and his Dover command, and the extraordinary suffering, sacrifice and bravery of all those who enabled the miraculous rescue from Dunkirk.

The British Golf Open- Sandwich 14TH-17TH JULY From the 14th - 17 July the British Open 2011 will be returning to Kent hosted again by Royal St Georges Golf Club in Sandwich Kent. The last time The British open was held in Kent was back in July 2003. The Royal St George’s has hosted the event 13 times before. The course has been celebrated by golfers since the nineteenth century when it was opened to give London golfers a relaxing alternative to the overcrowded and under managed courses that they were used to. To give an idea of the difficulties players face at the Royal St George’s Bill Rogers, Greg Norman and Ben Curtis are the only three players who have ever won The Open at Royal St George’s under par for 72 holes. At the last open in 2003, The 132nd Open was won by Ben Curtis, an American rookie playing his first ever major, he won by 1 stroke carding a 69 for the final day and was the only player to shoot under par for the week. With the finest in the globe’s golfing talent coming to battle it out on Kent’s number one course this July, you’d be mad not to swing by and check out one of sport’s classic annual events.

Whitstable Oyster Festival SATURDAY 23 - FRIDAY 29 JULY 2011

Word is spreading about the Whitstable Oyster Festival. And for good reason too. With the number of events and audiences rapidly increasing every year it really is the pearl of the seaside towns Summer events. For people wanting to escape the gloom of the economic recession, Whitstable’s Oyster Festival is a perfect antidote. Most Festival events are either free or very low cost, making a whole day or even a a whole week of entertainment very affordable. “Audience research shows that the festival is very poplar across all ager ranges from young children right through to senior citizen”” says Festival Director Mair Stratton. “We attribute this to our low pricing policy, coupled with the scope of activities and entertainment on offer”. Traditional local customs of the oyster fishing industry are at the heart of the Whitstable Oyster Festival, and celebrated through events such as the Oyster Parade, Landing of the Oysters, Blessing of the Waters and grotter building. Surrounding these set pieces, the Festival features a host of family and arts-based entertainment, fun workshops, street entertainment, local heritage and history, and a blossoming food fair promoting local produce and producers. Thanks to a Local Food Grant from the Big Lottery Fund the food and drink EPICentre will be even better in 2011, with a 2-day stage hosting demonstrations, tastings and competitions.

If you’re bored of listening to the same old ‘Rock’ covers, come to see Fat Badger and “Get Badgered”! “Get Badgered”, has become a phrase used, quite often, to promote our gigs. And that is how we like our supporters/audience to feel after they have heard us. That feeling of flustered excitement, hairs on the back of your neck, mixed with a hint of nervous anticipation, not knowing what’s coming next!!! Fat Badger are a 4 piece band with a fine selection of talented musicians. Chris Bailey on guitar, Chris Payne on the bass, Darren Roberts on the drums and myself, Andy Tozer, on vocals. Fat Badger are already etched into Ashford rock folklaw, because we were the first band of the evening line-up at the very first Create Festival at Victoria Park, Ashford, in 1996. The only change since then is we have upgraded the bass player and have 15 more years of great music to choose from! Fat Badger are not just a rock covers band. We take great thought choosing covers and pick some of the finest album tunes and avoid cheesy chart topping tunes. We cover popular bands like Foo Fighters, Hendrix, Led Zepplin, Red Hot Chillie Peppers to name but a few but we also play songs by Audioslave, Velvet Revolver, Reef and Chicken Foot.

THE BUBBLE BAND

The Bubbleband are an energetic four piece group hailing from the Isle of Thanet in the top right hand corner of Kent. With Krista Uphill on fiddle, Graham Sykes on guitar, Scott Kirk-Emes on bass and Mark Norton on drums, they create some of the most exciting and energetic contemporary folk music of our time, taking the traditional and the new, mixing it up and coming out with a fresh new electric musical experience that is both highly entertaining and fun! In the live set be prepared for only fools and horses meets the Cajun stomp, proof that the classical composer Rossini was in fact a hillbilly and the Prodigy’s Breath vs the folk classic King of the Fairies. They are also keeping the folk music tradition well and truly alive by writing their own material inspired by the rich local history of the area. Stories of the “wreckers” of Deal and tales of the Thanet smuggling gangs are brought together with some of the bands own experiences to provide some catchy, informative amusing and sometimes saddening songs. The Bubbleband have had the honour of playing at some of the most prestigious local events including the opening of the Turner contemporary, the Planet Thanet beer festival at Margate Winter Gardens, the Margate Big Event and can sometimes be seen playing in the Market Place in Margate old own. They are currently recording their first album, Windmills & Pirates to be released at Broadstairs Folk week in August where they will be playing 3 gigs this year. For the latest gig list, downloads & booking information visit their website at: www.thebubbleband.co.uk. They can also be found on Facebook and YouTube.

Jazz Listings American saxophonist Greg Abate makes a rare appearance in Kent this month when he plays at the 144 Club, New Road Rochester on Wednesday, July 13. Abate was lead alto with the Ray Charles band and later played tenor with the revived Artie Shaw Orchestra. He has gone on to become a worldrenowned hard-bop soloist performing at all the major jazz festivals around the globe. His first highly acclaimed album was recorded live at New York’s Birdland. Greg Abate will be backed by the Roan Kearsey-Lawson Trio. The performance begins at 8.15pm. The multi-award winning Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra’s repertoire is astonishing wide-ranging, taking in the classics of the swing era with some contemporary compositions. Trumpeter and jazz critic, Digby Fairweather has said: “I haven’t heard a better big band since the days of Herman, Ellington and Basie.” Praise indeed! You can hear this exciting 19-piece outfit at he Smallholders Club, Wigmore on Saturday, July 23 and at the Tower Theatre, Shorncliffe, Folkestone, Sunday, July 24.
