Out & About Summer 2015

In the year of the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, Kent unveils its hidden treasure… Magna Carta Rediscovered, a major touring exhibition visiting towns and cities across Kent with important historical associations to Magna Carta, the document that shaped the legal system across the world since it was sealed at Runnymede 800 years ago on 16th June 1215. The 1300 Faversham Magna Carta is displayed as the centrepiece of this fascinating ‘must see’ exhibition. ‘Magna Carta Rediscovered’ is a unique visual touring exhibition that will use this anniversary year to illuminate Kent and Medway’s connections with this period of medieval history. This free, interactive exhibition provides a unique opportunity to deepen public understanding of Magna Carta. The exhibition launched in Faversham on 23rd May, and remainedin the town until 28th June when began its tour across Kent opening in The Beaney, Canterbury on 2nd July. The ‘Magna Carta Rediscovered’ exhibition features interactive displays which interpret the importance of the medieval Magna Carta to today’s concepts of the freedom of the individual, democracy and society. With Magna Carta as the centrepiece, the exhibition also highlights the rest of the Faversham Charter Collection and the town’s civic regalia. ‘Magna Carta Rediscovered’ is being curated by Laura Samuels, who has been involved in delivering heritage projects for more than ten years. She has worked on a wide range of projects ranging from museums, art galleries and touring exhibitions, to places of worship and theatres to battlefields, archaeological excavations and parks (jakarandatree.com). The exhibition has been designed by Italian company ETT Solutions, which uses 21st century technology to make the role of the museum visitor ‘active’. Dates and venues are: 2nd July-19th July The Beaney House of Art and Knowledge, Canterbury; 25th July-6th September, Kent History and Library Centre, Maidstone; 10th September19th September, Maison Dieu, Dover; 24th September-6th October, Jury Room, The Guildhall, Sandwich; and 10th October-6th December, Lady Chapel, Rochester Cathedral.

MAGNA CARTA LEGAL LEGACY Magna Carta was a watershed in English legal and political history. It underpins many of the most important aspects of legislation, particularly concerning human rights. One of the most significant of these is Habeas Corpus, refined in 17th century when Magna Carta was being rediscovered as an affirmation of individual liberties. Drawing directly on clauses from Magna Carta, Habeas Corpus states that no-one should be imprisoned or held in custody without a fair trial. It is one of the most important privileges associated with English civil liberties and has been used to defend and champion freedoms ever since.

The War is Over! Peace in our Time! Yes it’s true – after 33 years, this year’s War and Peace at Folkestone Racecourse will be the last one ever! Having organised War and Peace for 27 of its 33 years with the help of Barbara Shea, Rex Cadman has decided it’s time to call it a day. “Barbara and I have organised War and Peace for 27-years this year and she is ready to retire, so we decided that as we started this journey together, after much thought we would end it together. “We’re very proud to have grown the show from a small club event with about 100 vehicles, to the world’s largest military show, seeing over 4,000 vehicles and 100,000 people. A great many other military vehicle shows have War and Peace as their parentage, having grown out of our event”. But War and Peace isn’t just about military vehicles; in 2009 it introduced the annual Schools’ Day – a free event for Kent and Medway school children that grew considerably each year. Last year 2,500 school children had a taste of wartime Britain – a true testament to the educational value the county places on the War and Peace Schools’ Day. The recognition of veterans is another aspect of which the War and Peace team is quietly proud. “We were the first show to invite WW2 veterans for free nearly 20-years ago, and have had the privilege of meeting true heroes, no matter what they achieved” said Rex. “Sadly their numbers are dwindling quite considerably and we’re losing an incredible generation.” Each year War and Peace has extended the complimentary invitation to veterans of other significant conflicts that it is marking for that year – including the Falklands, National Service – and this year the Gurkhas in honour of their 200th anniversary of service to the British crown. “We’ve had an amazing time, but sadly all good things must come to an end. The 2015 War and Peace Revival will be our last show – it may also be the last War and Peace ever unless someone or a group comes forward to take it on!” War and Peace evolved from the annual Invicta Military Vehicle Preservation Society club event back in 1982 at Tenterden train station, which moved to the former Whitbread Hop Farm at Paddock Wood in 1987. The War and Peace Show was then based at the Hop Farm for 25 years, before relaunching as The War and Peace Revival at Folkestone Racecourse in 2013. So if you’ve always thought of coming to War and Peace and not got round to it - don’t miss out on being part of the final show!

K ent VW Festival Friday 24th – Monday 27th July Headcorn Aerodrome The Kent VW Festival has come a long way in the last four years since it started at a local steam rally near Dover. After outgrowing the grounds the festival moved and despite imitations, this still remains the only “Kent VW Festival”. 2015 see the festival moving to Headcorn Aerodrome. (between Tenterden & Maidstone) This offers the best location in the heart of Kent with flat grounds and the added bonus of lots to see and do for all the family. As well as some awesome selection of VW’s and the usual VW show events, such as show and shine, and great chilled camping, the Kent VW Festival offers so much more than any other similar show in Kent. You’ll find everything from helicopter flights, pleasure flights and Ariel Pyrotechnics displays to two seater Spitfires and 50 calibre machine guns to fire. Alongside this there is a free onsite Museum. This year there are over 20 live bands playing over the weekend plus free music workshops for the kids to enjoy. The Kent VW Festival is the only VW show in the South East constantly raising money for good causes each year, and they are justly proud to have raised thousands for Charities such as Pilgrims Hospice, Jade’s Brain Cancer Trust and Help for Heroes. This year they are supporting The British Heart Foundation! The local VW fraternity have lost several VW fans over the past year due to heart problems and any way they can, they wish to help with research into heart problems and defects. So if you want either to party or chill we have traders, music, DJ’s, free activities and also a full size fun fair on site… plus an onsite pub/restaurant. So come and camp for 3 nights for £20 and kids up to 16 yrs old are free! Tickets are available from www.kentvwfestival.org.uk

Theatre Tributes, Comedy, Drama, Musicals July / August 2015 Changeling Theatre is delighted to be touring The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Hay Fever across the South East in summer 2015, in outdoor venues ranging from country homes such as Swarling Manor and Egerton House, to ornamental gardens such as Walled Nursery Hawkhurst, and Biddenden Vineayrd. Walmer and Rochester castles, Margate main beach, and a number of public parks also present performances.

The Two Gentlemen Of Verona Following the phenomenal success of Romeo and Juliet last year and the overwhelming vote of our audiences for THE TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA, we made the crazy decision to present a 20th Century classic alongside our usual offering of open air Shakespeare. Shakespeare's comment on friendship, love, constancy and fickleness, this romantic comedy takes us from the controlled world of Verona and Milan to the wildness of the forest where, it seems, anything can happen. The Two Gentlemen of Verona is a comedy about the adventures of two bosom buddies, Valentine and Proteus. When Proteus falls in love with his best friend's girlfriend, the guys find themselves torn between the bonds of male friendship and romance. (If you're thinking all this sounds like a modern day "romantic comedy," you're right. Two Gentlemen of Verona is the great, great grandfather of buddy flicks) “At first I did adore a twinkling star But now I worship a celestial sun” Hay Fever tells the story of a busy weekend at a country house, where each member of the Bliss family has invited a guest to stay, without informing anyone else. Judith, a recently retired actress contemplating a swift return to the stage, has invited her young admirer Sandy Tyrell, who believes he is in for a romantic tryst with an unattached beauty. Judith’s husband David is working on the last chapter of his novel, and has invited the sweet ingénue Jackie Coryton to keep him company,. Not to be outdone, brother and sister Simon and Sorel have each invited an older lover. All four guests are forced into close quarters with the four members of the host family, each one more eccentric than the last. Parlour games turn to rancour; romantic alliances split and reform with flippant ease, recalling at once the dry wit of Wilde and the carnivalesque atmosphere of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. As Saturday evening climaxes into a clamour of melodrama, each of the invited guests begin to rue ever accepting an invitation from the inimitable Blisses.

In My Dining Hell, Jay examines our love affair with lousy reviews, reads from accounts of some of the most excruciating nights out he’s ever had & looks at the worst reviews his own work has ever received. A hugely entertaining show in the company of the man recently voted the best food and drink journalist in Britain.

Hotsy Totsy are something

different...They play songs from 1930s, right up to current chart hits and they like to call themselves a “retro to contemporary girl-group”. The girl’s popularity is spreading especially with the current trend for all things retro/vintage, and have played all kinds of venues, ranging from outdoors at sports events, local pubs, clubs and bars, hotels and even theatres and residential homes. What makes the group different, is that they are able to individually tailor a set list to events or venues. What does Hotsy Totsy sound like? They idolise The Andrews Sisters and have worked tirelessly to create that full, rich harmony sound. The sound, although predominantly vintage and vintage inspired, has grown with the live performances. Other styles continually get incorporated into the repertoire and because they are an actively gigging group, they try and make sure they have something to suit everyone in their song list. On the Hotsy Totsy home page, you can find a full list of songs. Hotsy Totsy like to put their own twist on some songs, so you will hear pop favourites like Perfect by Fairground Attraction, That’s Life by Frank Sinatra and Umbrella by Rihanna sung in a way which you would not hear anywhere else. And , of course, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy by The Andrews Sisters signature song. Not wishing to stick with the same set list, the girls learn a few new songs every month, so people wishing to book them can ask for particular songs and it helps keep all their performances fresh. Based in the Thanet area, but Hotsy Totsy will travel to other venues around Kent ….and this is what a few of the customers had to say….

“A great show at The Red Lion! A mixture of great songs with amazing vocals!” - Red Lion St Peters customer “WOW - you girls looked and sounded fabulous! Everyone was very impressed with you all. Perfection” For bookings: hotsytotsyband@hotmail.com

I like a bit of Americana, and let’s face it, who doesn’t? If you want to see a real class Americana star, you’ve got to see Tim Eriksen at the Marlowe Studio at the Marlowe Theatre Canterbury on 30th July. Tim Eriksen is acclaimed for transforming Americana tradition with his startling interpretations of old ballads, love songs, gospel and dance tunes– creating a distinctive hardcore americana sound, and an incredible live experience.

The 15th August sees the John Butler Trio at the De La Warr Pavilion Bexhill. I’m strongly tempted to pop down to Bexhill myself just to see support artist JP Cooper!! Definitely one to watch in 2015 Following on from a sold-out UK tour and supporting soul singer Angie Stone in 2014, so it will be a double helping of excellent British musicians on stage.
