TJ JOHNSON

As much as she thoroughly enjoys fronting her Big Band or her Hollywood Orchestra, or presenting her weekly show on BBC Radio 2, award winning jazz singer Clare Teal still revels in performing in more intimate venues. Getting close to an audience is a thrilling experience for Clare. She engages in a wonderful musical (and often spoken) conversation with the audience and they in turn feel that they really have witnessed something personal and very special. The music played in these shows is always evolving, from The Great American and British Songbooks to the music made popular by her heroes, Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day and Peggy Lee to more contemporary covers and original material.

Derek Nash - sax (Jools Holland, Brian Culbertson, Jack Bruce), Tim Cansfield guitar (Bee Gees, Steve Winwood, Ray Charles), Winston Blissett - bass (Jeff Lorber, Massive Attack, Jimmy Cliff), Frank Tontoh - drums (George Michael, Al Green, Level 42), Graham Harvey (Incognito). Led by saxophonist Derek Nash of the Jools Holland R&B Orchestra - with a band of funk all-stars who've played with, among others, Ray Charles, George Michael and Massive Attack - The Funk Experience bring you the sounds of Grover Washington Jnr, David Sanborn, Herbie Hancok, Bill Withers and more. Ian Shaw previews his upcoming Adelaide Festival one man show. Plumbing the depths of popular song (Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Rodgers & Hart) and pivoted around Shaw’s highly confessional, often hilarious originals, this one-man, one-piano tour de force is the ultimate lesson of one-man showmanship. Fred Clark is an exciting acoustic singer/songwriter who performs with incredible energy and writes with an upbeat, emotive, vibrant style. Having released 5 albums and performed over 400 gigs in the past 7 years this night will see Fred return to his hometown of Maidstone to headline a great night of candle lit music.

Judie comes to the Maidstone for a very special gig; she will be performing acoustically as part of her ‘Songs and Stories’ experience. This promises to be an intimate evening of old favourites and new songs and tales from across her life and career. Judie Tzuke is one of the UK's finest Singer/Songwriters and is known all over the world for her timeless song, 'Stay With Me Till Dawn', with many top 10 albums, including the revered classic, 'Welcome to the Cruise' and her exquisite live shows. Judie will be showing once again what an extraordinary artist she is! Fate the Juggler are a professional original folk/rock outfit, formed in the summer of 2010, comprising a fantastic combination of experienced musicians from Maidstone, Kent. They have released two albums to date and play a unique form of Original Folk Rock - a mix of musical styles from folk, rock, pop and blues, which all makes for a powerful and unique original sound.

TJ Johnson is widely considered to be one of the UK’s most charismatic highly revered jazz and blues singers. He is also a hot piano player, drummer and a respected bandleader. Always a true ambassador of the soul, TJ sings songs of love lost and gained, of life wholesome and corrupt, songs of hope and despair, songs of the night, all with the true passion and boozy swagger of only a man who has been there and knows. Backed by his group of top London based musicians TJ plays an extraordinary blend of music that transcends the boundaries of jazz, blues, soul, country and gospel and is influenced by some of the greats such as Ray Charles, Dr John, Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash, BB King, Nina Simone, Alberta Hunter, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Witherspoon and many more.

Sat 13 June MOTOWN LIVE REVUE: “Signed, Sealed & Delivered” Ex-Drifter Patrick Alan’s Motown Live Revue is an amazing show with a stellar cast of singers and a powerhouse band to take you on a journey through some of Motor City’s countless hits from some of the world’s biggest artists.

FUNK ATTACK

Young, accomplished, Kent based musicians, The Carter Burton Trio were formed in 2013, all of the members went to the same school and they soon found that they shared the same passion for jazz. They recently recorded their debut album in which is due out in April this year. The album is the follow up of their single "Full Of Emptiness", released on iTunes in 2014. Their debut album (of the same name) features their own compositions in addition to a jazz reworking of Daphne Orams Doctor Who theme.

Top soul, jazz and funk saxophonist Snake Davis is widely known for his solos on tracks like Lisa Stansfield’s ‘Change’, M-Peoples ‘Search For A Hero’ and ‘Moving On Up’, and Take That’s ‘A Million Love Songs’. // Out and About //

Out & About prominent and incisive commentators on contemporary society and culture. His uniquely subversive art combines autobiographical reference, from his childhood to alter-ago Claire, with wry social commentary on class, taste, consumerism, war, and art versus craft. See more than 50 works in this focussed survey of Perry°os practice, only on show in Margate. From a young artist forging his own language in Thatcherite 1980s Britain to his work today, the exhibition explores the idea of ‘Provincial Punk’ as an anti-elitist and teasingly unfashionable spirit of creativity at the heart of his work. See an extensive display of Perry’s hand-made ceramic pots covered in drawings, handwritten texts and collaged elements, from Perry’s earliest pieces made in the late 1980s to the present day. Described as „stealth bombs°o, these visually seductive and decorative pots touch on themes such as religion, childhood trauma and environmental disaster. From provincial to popular, Perry guides you through his chronicles of modern life, and in post-election Britain, helps us assess culture, identity, class and the role of artist and craftsperson from then to now.

Deal Festival of Music and the Arts Runs from 26th June – 12th July 2015

We move from the splendours of C16th and C17th Venicem with the combined forces of the Academy of Ancient Music, Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Choir of Canterbury Cathedral to London’s jazz imbued Soho with the brilliant Ronnie Scott’s All Stars, from witty tales about the Duke of Wellington to the uproarious humour of Worbey & Farrell. We see the evocative music of Debussy and Messiaen through the eyes of artists and the movement of dancers and we discover Shakespeare’s tales of love either in the romantic setting of Walmer Castle or through the visceral music of Stravinsky and the exhilarating passion of physical theatre. By popular demand we welcome back the great Grimethorpe Colliery Band and Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, and we also welcome for the first time special ensembles such as Wiener Kammer-Symphonie and Cambridge’s Choir of Gonville and Caius. We offer platforms for some of the best young musicians, be they ambassadors from Kent such as Matilda Lloyd (BBC Radio 2's Young Brass Award winner 2014 and brass finalist of BBC Young Musician of the Year) or charting dynamic paths into glittering careers such as the outstanding pianists Maksim Stsura, Imma Setiadi and Nicholas McCarthy.

Joan Armatrading Central Theatre Chatham Fri 29th May There are many good words to describe Joan Armatrading but surely the best, the most apposite, has to be... impressive. Her singing, her song writing, her playing, her quietly understated but complete control of the stage… impressive. Joan Armatrading is currently mid way through her last major world tour. It will be her final one on this scale. After 42 years there’ll be no more continuous long haul travel. Enough with the torturous routing and the leaving home one year not to return till the next. But this is not just her ultimate major tour. It is also, rather unbelievably, her first ever solo world tour, and kicked off in South Africa in April this year. With nearly every show to date a complete sellout, it sees her on the road until the end of 2015. It also encompasses the UK, Australia, North America, Germany, Denmark, France, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, New Zealand and more concerts in South Africa,. ‘Catch it if you can’ is a much touted phrase but here it never holds truer.

Katherine Ryan… Glam Role Model Gulbenkian Theatre Canterbury Saturday 30th May A dude who is fast becoming a recognisable face on British TV with appearances on BBC 1's Live At The Apollo & Let's Dance for Comic Relief, BBC 2's Mock The Week, QI & Nevermind The Buzzcocks, C4's 8 Out of 10 Cats and more, Katherine Ryan embarks on her second UK stand-up tour. The fresh, often dangerously fierce pop-culture obsessed Canadian, was unaffected by publicized death threats and survived the world's first crack smoking mayor. 'Warped wit...striking presence...killer lines...calm confidence.' Scotsman

AN EVENING WITH DAVID SEDARIS Thursday 4th June Winter Gardens Margate “David Sedaris isn’t a stand-up, or even much of a showman. But in his own dry and unassuming way, he’s one of the finest comic talents currently living on this planet.” THE GUARDIAN You may have heard him on the hugely popular BBC Radio 4 series ‘’Meet David Sedaris’’ or you might be one of the millions worldwide who have read one of his many books. Now, after three sell-out runs in London, two sell-out Edinburgh Fringe Festival stints and a sell-out UK 2014 tour; David Sedaris will once again set out across the UK, we’re delighted to have him here at Margate Winter Gardens for what is sure to be one of the literary events of the year. “He has a Bennett-like way with a pause, and pitch perfect comedy timing…” SCOTSMAN With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.

Gregory Porter The Amazing New Voice Of Jazz Wednesday 24th June De La Warr Pavilion Bexhill The Rye International Jazz and Blues Festival proudly presents a very special pre-festival one-off concert with the amazing internationally acclaimed voice of Jazz, Gregory Porter has taken the jazz and music industry by storm with numerous appearances on national television and radio. He continues to perform to sell out audiences across world and has achieved international recognition and acclaim with his Grammy winning multi-platinum selling album Liquid Spirit. This very special concert is kindly sponsored by Future Climate Info and as the lucky crowds who’ve seen him perform the world over can vouchsafe: you can drink deep of Gregory Porter. And the best kind of intoxication will follow. As the lyrics to his foot-stomping, high-clapping title track have it: “Un-reroute the rivers, let the dammed water be, there’s some people down the way that’s thirsty, so let the liquid spirit free…This charismatic Californian is here to breathe life, and vitality, and fun, and excitement, and passion, and honesty into the musical genres he has loved from boyhood, ever since Nat “King” Cole entered his heart. Liquid Spirit is shot through with gospel, blues and R&B influences… the title track pair’s soulful horns with a deep, enveloping bassline that frames the California native’s supple tenor.” - Wall Street Journal “Gregory Porter is a powerful baritone who writes his own songs… from a more ’70s or early ’80s oriented place in the African-American jazz tradition, strong and sometimes experimental yet serenely unacademic, and mightily good.” - The New York Times The 2015 Rye Jazz & Blues Festival take’s place from Thursday 27th – 31st August. Absent Friends Tuesday 30th June Theatre Royal Margate Summer 1974. A well-intentioned tea party descends into chaos. Wealthy, unfulfilled housewife Diana arranges a gathering of old friends to cheer up bereaved Colin, whose fiancée drowned a few months earlier. Paul, her bullying, selfabsorbed husband, has recently had a brief affair with Evelyn, the glamorous, young wife of his friend and incompetent business associate, John. The get-together is completed by long-suffering Marge, who has left her hypochondriac spouse ailing at home. Preparations for the party commence, sparking tensions and opening old wounds. As lingering resentments and deep-rooted jealousies surface, an unexpectedly cheerful Colin wanders into the mayhem.Acerbic and painfully funny, Absent Friends explores friendship, marriage and what it means to be truly happy. In one of his finest and darkest plays, Ayckbourn’s comic dexterity and acute social observations have never been sharper or more biting. Alan Ayckbourn is an Olivier and Tony Award winning playwright who has written 78 plays, more than half of which have been produced in London’s West End.

Kent Gig Guide Albert Lee

Astor Theatre Deal Friday 5th June “A brilliant guitar player. His sound is unmistakable—often emulated, never equalled.” Emmylou Harris

Albert Lee is the real deal, a genuine bona fide guitar hero who performs with such passion and prowess that it leaves you feeling breathless. No wonder that Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones called him the world’s greatest guitarist! Albert Lee as a guitar hero goes way back to the classic era of guitar playing of the 70’s. He made his name as the guitar slinger for country-rock band ‘The Hot Band’ headed by arguably the best county singer of all time; Emmylou Harris. In ‘The Hot Band’ he showed how a young man from Herefordshire, England could equal or even outplay any of the Nashville crowd. After a short while his reputation was cemented as one of the finest county-rock guitarists, and one the top guitarists in the world full stop. Since then he has been part of Eric Clapton’s band, the Everly Brothers, but these days he plays mainly with Hogan’s Heroes. Expect all of the usual showstoppers; ‘County Boy’ Albert Lee’s trademark tune, ‘Tear it Up’, ‘Runaway Train’, ‘Luxury Liner’ and ‘Real Wild Child’. What you are guaranteed with Albert Lee is a musical prowess so great that you are guaranteed to leave fully satisfied and truly awestruck. Because you will know without a doubt that you have witnessed one the greatest guitarists of all time play and sing his heart out in front you.

60 days of live music at Kent’s favourite venues listings may vary after publication.. please check with venues prior to travel

DAVID ‘RAM JAM’ RODIGAN

Bank Holiday Saturday 23rd May sees the area’s first Ska & Reggae fests. The Source Bar in Maidstone’s, Party In The Yard, has lured internationally famous Reggae man, David Rodigan to front this year’s bash. For over 35 years David Rodigan has been the top dog in the ganjascented, bass heavy-atmosphere of Britain’s reggae dance-halls. The key to his success has been an unsinkable passion for reggae music, which first took a hold of him as a schoolboy when he heard ska music in the early ’60s.He developed an obsession with the music of Jamaica that generated an encyclopaedic knowledge of the island’s every artist, every song and every rhythm track. Joining him on stage are Gold Maker Allstars, Toot n Skamen, the Scorchers and longshot sounds.

Ah… we’re glad to see the Blues are still alive… The Windmill Inn in Ashford are passionate about live music and following on from their successful Americana Festival on the first May Bank holiday, they’re following it up with a one day Charity Blues Festival on Monday 25th May. Jeremiah Longshanks, is one amongst many bands playing on the day.

The annual Bank Holiday Fest that is One Live Weekend appears on Earls’ music calendar one again this year with some of Kent’s finest bands. Kellys Heros, Mofos, Top Guns, Bad Pandas, Timmy Moore and All Day Falling are just some of the bands playing over the bank holiday Saturday and Sunday 24th & 25th May

Midge Ure… he of Ultravox, Visage, and Live Aid fame, is at the Gulbenkian Theatre Canterbury on 17th May as part of his Breathe Again European tour

I would walk one thousand miles…. Well, maybe not, but if you do want to make your way to Canterbury’s Marlowe Theatre you can see brothers Craig and Charlie Reid, AKA the Proclaimers on the 14th June.

…and finally, if you like Joan Armatrading, (Central Theatre Chatham) try and get to see her now… ‘cause if you don’t…. ‘I will never retire but this will be the last major tour that I will undertake. For the first time these concerts will be me solo on stage playing the guitar and piano and singing. I want these concerts to be a special lively interactive one to one experience. I have absolutely enjoyed the last 42 years of performances but now, with my final major tour, I want to capture a unique memory for both myself and the audience.’ Joan Armatrading Well said Joan.

The ASP Band Classic Rock and then some The new line up of The Band ASP sees a unique, fresh and friendly crew emerging and creating a impressive stamp on the county circuit. Their mixture of pumping classic rock anthems, carefully crafted R and B numbers and awesome indie hits ensure that whenever they play there is something for everyone. The fact that they love doing what they do - which is to play good music and play it well - comes over in their performances which are vibrant, well produced, energetic and always enjoyable. In one performance ASP can span 5 decades of music but have fused music genres together in a very accomplished and skilful style. Their haunting version of Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol - never fails to hit the heartstrings of anyone who hears it and compliments the faithfully reproduced licks of timeless classics from artists such as Bowie, Quo, Thin Lizzy, Eurythmics, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Foo Fighters to name but a few. Refreshingly, for a covers band, ASP can also lay claim to some bright, well crafted original tracks that compliment the set. ASP has at its forefront, Pete Amos on lead guitar and vocals, Petes’ professionalism is reflected in the calibre and extent of his musical ability. Chris White on rhythm guitar (electric and electro acoustic) creates stunning and contemporary accompaniments that underpin the originality and identity of the band and Alan Morgan on drums, provides a first rate groove which maintains the energy and dynamics of the bands performance. On electric bass is Cassy Potter always committed to recreating the lines as originally written, but not afraid to throw in a few new twists and turns now and then. The musicianship from this group is audibly powerful in their creative employment throughout the set of both electro and electro acoustic guitars and a drum and bass section which is totally in the pocket. Numbers are topped by polished lead vocals and masterly additions of backing vocals in all the right places. Whether at a country pub planning a relaxed afternoon BBQ, a three day rock festival or simply loking for a band to entertain at any function or party, ASP is fast becoming a band that will never fail to please. ASP are playing across the county - check their website thebandasp.weebly.com or visit their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/thebandASP
