2019
A warm welcome to Swindon Open Studios 2019 – our longstanding, community-based art event during which the town’s artists invite members of the public into their studios, homes and pop-up exhibitions each September for a unique chance to meet the artists and see how and where their art is made. Participants will be happy to discuss their work with you and many will be giving demonstrations of their practice. You may even be offered tea and cake in the garden before setting off to your next discovery and possible purchase! Symbols below each listing indicate the available facilities. The first Swindon Open Studios was in 2004 with a follow up in 2006. From 2008 onwards the event has been held annually and we aim to build on the efforts and success of previous committee members to ensure the town’s art scene grows bigger and better each year.
www.swindonopenstudios.org
Please visit our website for updates and follow us on all the usual social media channels to look out for even more information on our artists. Please tag pictures of your visits and favourite artists on social media #SwindonOpenStudiosVisit – we will be offering a prize for the individual who visits the most venues across the widest area over both weekends (more details inside back cover). Keep an eye out for some of our artists’ work which will be appearing in shop windows and businesses around town during September while we promote the event. A big thank you goes to our artists who have subscribed to the event to make it possible, along with our sponsors who’ve helped us with the costs of printing this brochure. An equally big thank must go to our sponsors, our committee of volunteers and to our main sponsor, Waddell Digital, all of whom are keen to promote the arts in Swindon. With best wishes, the Swindon Open Studios Committee

I am happiest when creating. My current project is Tiaras etc. I create bespoke pieces using wire, semi-precious gemstones and materials from nature. Come and see a collection of other work by myself and my son Ryan Tennant, who studied Fine art at Chelsea college of Art in London.
I enjoy painting in a variety of media, drawing and textile artwork. Sketchbooks are also a passion and there will be many to look at showing different projects and ideas over the years. There will be paintings, plants and cards for sale. You are welcome to explore the garden which is another creative outlet and an inspiration for my work.

I make slip decorated earthenware pottery in an imaginative range of wheel thrown mugs, jugs and dishes, alongside hand formed ceramic vessels. My inspirations are 18th century English slipware and the megalithic structures and burial chambers of the British landscape. I warmly invite you to meet me and view my work.
I am a glass mosaic artist, specialising in creating art for the garden. My work reflects my love of gardening, nature and wildlife, as well as my fascination for the vibrant marriage between glass and light. I will be demonstrating, and there will be an opportunity for you to contribute to creating an exciting group mosaic, which will be raffled for charity.
I'm new to open studios and will be showing a mixture of what I enjoy creating which reflects my interests, travels and things that inspire me from nature. I like to work with watercolour, pastels and acrylics. I also love making mystical, magical crafts such as wirework trees, fairies, fairy jars and doors.

I am a professional pet photographer. I strongly believe every family who has a pet should have beautiful memories captured in photographs to treasure forever. I'll be showcasing some of my previous work and taking bookings. Whether you are looking for full-colour portraits, fine-art prints, or casual photographs to turn into canvases, I’m happy to help.
Here be dragons! Makerspace hosts a collaboration of artists and craftspeople producing 2D and 3D art in a variety of media, creating a blaze of dragons for the 2019 Swindon Open Studios. Examples of media used include: paper, textiles, quilting, soft sculpture, pen and ink, lino-print, ceramics, wood, metal, wire and mixed media.
I have worked as a ceramist for almost 20 years, my work has been regularly exhibited at open studio events. My work is about discovery, finding detritus collected on beaches and looking at graffiti and the marks the weather and people have left on the landscapes. I will be showing my recent work that is functional with a nod to the colours of the landscape.

My photographic work involves landscapes and details within them. They come from local and my travels. At the moment my work is digitally produce with some images scanned from photographic film.
Ethereal paintings and sculptures works on natural surface medium using mixed media - oils, acrylics, chalks, pencil and ceramic. I work mainly on wood, stone or ceramic and attempt to bring the dormant spirit to life. I’ll be offering portraits and caricatures on the open days and there will be opportunities for people to get involved with interactive arts.
In the madness of it all I climb a hill and find my moment of peace. The walk inspires a thought, an image to share with you today. So venture out and join me in a moment of madness, at Mams gallery to see paintings, drawings and perhaps some poetry.

I have a diverse interest in art and enjoy painting pastel landscapes, illuminated letters in gouache and gold leaf, ‘quirky’ and historic buildings in watercolour and hand building ceramics both functional and decorative. I very much enjoy painting fine detail and will be exhibiting some of my miniatures along with my ceramics.
My work as an artist is to facilitate and encourage others as they explore their creative side. I provide studio space, ceramics workshops and lots of tea and coffee where people get together, share skills and just have a good time in a friendly, supportive environment. You will see samples of work created by me and our visiting students and artists.
I love drawing buildings! It's as simple as that so when you visit me you will find all sorts of illustrations of local landmarks from Swindon and Bristol combining a mix of handdrawing and digital colour. I'll often draw people's houses and can be commissioned to draw almost anything...

Artsite
We are the Urban Sketchers Regional Chapter for Swindon. We draw on location, indoors or out, capturing what we see from direct observation. We currently have over 100 members and we sketch in and around Swindon on the first Saturday of every month. Urban Sketchers is an international, non-profit organisation, supporting a grassroots global community of sketchers.
I am a mixed media artist. I like to combine acrylics, collage and printmaking techniques in my work. I'm inspired by nature, colour and patterns around me. Layering and creating textures are also important elements in my work. I will be showing mixed media works on paper, canvas as well as mono prints.
The Artsite Complex consits of three properties (The Post Modern, Number 9 and Arstite Studios). Based in Theatre Square we currently house up to fifteen working Artists’ studios. Our aim is to provide affordable studios and space where creatives of all genres can experiment and grow.

I predominantly work in Ultraviolet and Standard Installation but also paint, print make, video and photograph, collage and assemble. My work is related to Arte Povera the Italian precurser to Conceptual Art. I also use my unconcious and subconcious to acess meaning and imagery so in that way I am a Neo-Surrealist.
Drawings inspired from architecture, geometry, and abstract landscapes. The everchanging flows and movements of time are illustrated in these drawings, and how that humanity cannot be bound by conformity to any set pattern. Nature will always grow beyond the plans of human planning and will manifest itself far removed from the realms of peoples control grids.

I enjoy working with enamels to kiln fire onto copper and steel. I like to capture natural forms, and explore the different ways that enamels can be used, and mixed with other ingredients. I like to think that some pieces might belong best in a garden!
As an artist I do not restrict myself a specific subject or media. Although I find I am often drawn to shape and texture, which in itself will often decide the media use. I enjoy the process rather than the outcome of my art, which makes for some interesting failures as well a successes. My studio work will include Painting , Collage, Print and Wire Work.

Sally Taylor
Samantha Silverton creates ceramic collages and assemblages inspired by the landscape. By capturing the essence of a place, working from a series of moments, relying on memories and emotions evoked she explores colour and mark making with a vibrant and intuitive energy, creating expressive paintings on Fired earth.
I seek out and collect old and vintage china inspired by the decades from the 1930's - 1970's and the Victorian era. Quirky ceramic vases, pots, and jugs intrigue me. What is the history behind my sentimental objects? Who did they belong to? What memories do they evoke? My work reflects the faded patterns and past that I now recycle and renew.
I am a mixed media artist working with and inspired by my collection of old photographs, books, china, textiles and general ephemera of everyday life; creating narratives, personal histories evoking memory and loss, through painting, collage, assemblage and textiles.

I like to incorporate found objects and natural materials into my work, adding words and photographs to create a story in mosaic. I’m drawn towards local and British landscapes, traditions and folklore for inspiration. I will be showing my work at Artsite on 21 and 22 September and will also have work on display at the Beehive alongside Kelly Ishwari Waldek collaborating on a words project .
I am a Linocut Printmaker and Intuitive Mandala Creator. I make full use of these beloved processes as conduits to allow the expression of power, passion and beauty. My studio is open to the public on 21 and 22 September as part of Artsite, in addition to holding a joint exhibition nearby at The Beehive, along with Mosaic artist Lynette Thomas, over both SOS weekends.
My work is rooted in Iran. It is layered with memories from my everyday life; some vivid, some faded over time. Vibrant and colourful, they are warm and rich, tempting us to imagine faraway lands. I love landscape and I love to show it in an abstract way.

Chris Waddell – photography
Lamorna Waddell – ceramics and paintings
Ken White – fine art paintings
Chris is a professional graphic designer and photographer who has published his first book "The End of the Pier Show" a compendium of all the UK’s remaining pleasure piers. He is working on an eclectic photo-a-day project and several travel-inspired books.
I love structure, form and texture. Architectural details inspire my drawing and painting practice in which I experiment with non-conventional media. My ceramic vessels are mostly porcelain inspired by lace and lingerie fastenings.
Ken White is perhaps best known for his murals, sited in a wide variety of locations all over the world. He was for many years the personal artist for Virgin boss Richard Branson and has completed works for him in many Virgin establishments worldwide. Ken's current work includes a series of landscape and industrial paintings based on his time working for the GWR.

C6 Art Stars – A level art
Painting Humans at Play allows me to contemplate our contradictory nature in all its strange and beautiful forms; while humour underpins much of my work. I owe an artistic debt to 16th century Northern European masters and ladybird books. I offer paintings, prints, gifts and delicious cake.
Samantha Silverton creates ceramic collages and assemblages inspired by the landscape. By capturing the essence of a place, working from a series of moments, relying on memories and emotions evoked she explores colour and mark making with a vibrant and intuitive energy, creating expressive paintings on Fired earth.
Join us to view the incredible work created by our students for their A level studies. Take in beautiful architectural inspired pieces, incredible portraiture, stunning paintings and quirky sculpture by C6 Art Stars, on show for one day only. A true celebration and showcase of the finest Commonweal artistic talent in the C6 cafe gallery and 611 studio space.

Louise Thompson – fine art paintings
Cheryl Holland Willis
Caroline Day – fine art paintings
I enjoy creating colourful minimalist still life pieces using oil paints or soft pastels. There is a large car park at our venue, so why not start your Old Town arts trail with us. We also have a lovely roof terrace with spectacular views which will be open, weather permitting. Exhibiting with Cheryl Holland Willis.
I discovered print a few years ago starting with lino and now drypoint printmaking from nature in the surrounding area. This year I have also expanded into pen and ink fine line drawings of British wildlife. There will be a selection of prints and cards to purchase and I will be doing a few small demonstrations on the drypoint in the cafe. Exhibiting with Louise Thompson.
"My compositions are rooted in a reverence for places and nature, during the ever changing seasons. Florals in particular allow me in a wonderful way to engage with colour, light and structure." Caroline Day graduated with a First Class BA Hons Degree in Camberwell College of Arts, 1994. and went on to gain a MA, Distinction, Cardiff University, 1996.

Paul Lappin
David Bent Hon CRAeS
Lisa Lowe – ceramics
Paul specialises in detailed pen and ink drawings of buildings and street scenes. He has spent the last few years in southern France drawing the busy cafĂŠs and quiet streets of nearby towns, selling his art at the local markets. In January he returned to his home town of Swindon to draw the pubs and independent businesses of Old Town, which are on display here for the first time.
Long time participants and supporters of Swindon Open Studios, David and Carole Bent will be welcoming visitors again this year. This is a good opportunity to see where David creates his paintings , recently exhibited at the Swindon Museum & Art Gallery and further afield. Originals and limited edition prints will be available to buy.
I love clay and all things ceramic and am constantly experimenting with shapes and colours, I am drawn to bright colours, life quotes and clean lines. Firing and opening the kiln can be very exciting and although I won't be firing the kiln on the open days I will have my workshop open and can explain the making process, along with various items for sale around the garden.

Ann Gamble
I am multidisciplinary artist and it is the creative process itself that drives my passion. I thrive when exploring different media and pushing their limits. The processes often intersect and correlate to produce unexpected outcomes. I love to explore texture and experiment with surface quality often strongly inspired by the environment.
I am an abstract artist, colour is my passion and motivator, you do not get what you see, it's all an illusion and your emotions tell you the story, believe in your sceptic self. Environmental sculpture and the environment are my reasons for producing works of art depicting environmental damage to our planet.
Ann will accept almost any challenge. Working mainly in oils for portraiture of animals and of people, floral pictures, still life, scenic work, weddings, christenings etc. Ann is also able to work from your black and white/sepia photographs as well as for turning various photos of people who have passed away/never met into a family portrait.

Aradhna Rastogi – paintings

Rhianon G Beardsall – mosaics and paintings
I specialise in natural fine art which ranges from acrylic, oil and watercolour. I come from a family of Indian jewellery designers. Here I was inspired by my father’s work which leads me to explore nature and real-life images. Hence my designs have an influence from Indian art.
I have always been entranced by coloured glass and first trained and worked making stained glass. I then moved into working with kiln formed glass which I love for its vibrance and fluidity as it melts to form the most amazing tactile shapes and colours. I make a range of items from simple window hangers and bowls to wall art for the home and garden.
As a contemporary artist inspired by the joy of nature, my work is vivid, vibrant and varied in both style and media. Described as a "mosaic mastermind" by Ideal Homes & Gardens (India) my unique mosaics include jewellery and designs for both indoors and out. My acrylic paintings are inspired by the life I see around me in colourful, abstract and painterly styles.

Lisa Lane – multi-media artist
John Webb – fine art paintings
With a Masters in Fine Art, I am an artist/designer/illustrator. Having a lifelong interest in comedy and humour, I was surprised to find that in creating humour it led to the darkest of spaces. The sublime and the ridiculous. I work in a mix of mediums from pencil and oils to digital and film. I will be showing a few short films also.
Lisa Lane looks forward to welcoming you. She is a multi media artist, who will be displaying her large and eclectic collection of paintings and dry media work in pastel. Her work reflects many interests and is represented through aromatherapy oil paintings, large scale seascapes, collages encaustic art and more...
John studied at Swindon Art School and Birmingham School of Arts & Crafts. He works in watercolour, oils and pen & ink. John’s output includes landscapes, seascapes, wildlife, churches and railways. As an art student in 1962, John was able to make his own historical record in art of Swindon’s Railway Workshops before their dissolution.

Still life, landscapes and wildlife. My artwork explores the colour, form and texture of the natural world through a range of mediums from pen & ink illustrations, pastels and watercolours to drypoint and lino-cut prints.
In my studio you will find a warm welcome and a riot of colour and movement. Large oils and acrylics, and small delicate watercolours of birds, flowers and fishes. Things seen and things remembered.
I specialise in illustration, mixed media and 3D form. I live in a cottage in the woods and my studio, Puff of Smoke, is nestled in the garden. It is a neverland of creatures, dwarfs, fairies, dragons and always the sound of a story drifting through the air.
Exhibiting with Deborah Battaglia.

Ushma Sargeant – textile artist
My art can be split into two main areas; landscapes and animals. My landscapes are inspired by the beautiful views that surround my studio. The shapes and colours that are found naturally in landscape fascinate and inspire me, along with the sense of history that can be found in these ancient areas.
Ushma creates fibre landscape and wildlife pictures taking inspiration from the unique and historical scenery around her, working to capture light, depth and texture using wool, silk, camel, alpaca, llama, angora, flax, seaweed, bamboo and acrylic. Ushma started using fibre as a medium in 2015 and her knowledge and skills have developed with practice.
