Dads in Business - Celebrating Fathers Day Loris Stefani

Stefani Floor Coverings www.facebook.com/stefanifloorcoverings

45 years in the trade second generation. Loris Stefani and brother David have a passion for floor design. Like their father before them, Loris and David are both young fathers and hope to inspire their own children too. Stefani Floor Coverings offer high quality polish floors, parquetry, vinyl and carpet for home, office and industrial flooring. As a home based business, I think it’s amazing that I am able to work around my children while watching and supporting their growth. As a young child, my father offered this. So when I followed his steps in to the business, I truly wanted this option for my sons’ Oscar and Samuel. I get to join school events and outing. I love being there when it matters most. Through the good and bad times, and those funny little monster moments!

Dave Mason

Mantis Technologies www.mantistech.com.au

David Mason runs a web design business from home since 2000. (I have been since 2000 – that’s 15 years!). At one point expanding to premises with 8 staff, from 2010 we moved back to home office with one in-house staff member and the rest of our team work from Melbourne and USA. Being online, we find that clients expect to contact me outside of normal work hours. The solution - a VOIP system, so my office goes everywhere and all I need is my phone, laptop and internet. What I love about working from home is the flexibility. The majority of our clients are interstate and international, so office premises is unnecessary. Operating from home, means I can get a couple of hours work done when I get up and then go to the gym, work more and then for urgent I can work at night or weekends without leaving home.

Dads in Business - Celebrating Fathers Day

One of the reasons I decided to work from home is that our son has ASD which makes life is unpredictable. If he needs to stay home from school or needs a specialist appointment then this is easy to manage.

Michael Ouwerkerk

Virtual CIO Brisbane www.virtualciobrisbane.com.au

Michael Ouwerkerk provides a flexible service to small businesses and companies that don’t have an IT Manager or CIO. Many SMEs are only really looking at a small subset of IT (i.e. technical), and missing out on activities (both strategic and operational) that help drive revenues by implementing fit for purpose solutions, and make IT operations both efficient and risk adverse. Virtual CIO Brisbane services start with a managerially focussed IT audit to identify any issues or opportunities, then implementing changes to improve IT spend effectiveness. Some clients are regular part-time (one day a week), some specific consulting or change projects, while others need an impartial advisor from an IT perspective. Living and working in the western suburbs of Brisbane Michael says it is awesome travelling 5 seconds to his home office. “I’m in a nice leafy street, got a great outlook, coffee machine and kitchen just around the corner. With my IT I’ve got everything I need in software and hardware to ensure I can do my job at home and from client locations. Another major benefit to working from home is with minimal overheads I pass on cost savings to my clients. With flexible work times, Michael enjoys spending quality time with his family and dropping the kids at school. Michael Crook

Better Small Business Solutions www.bettersmallbusinesssolutions.com.au

Michael Crook launched Better Small Business Solutions off the back of a conversation with a friend who was having difficulties finding someone local who could provide good online research. Michael thought, “I can do that” and has been commuting from his bedroom to the home office via the coffee machine ever since and “Loving It”. Better Small Business Solutions provides four key services – looking for leads, desktop scans, patent searches and market researching. Michael enjoys helping small business to grow by offering a unique online research service which is quick, reliable and affordable. Plus Michael gets to spend most of his day sitting in front of the computer look for “stuff” (yes, that is a technical term) finding out new things. What could be better than that? Michael is the proud father of Emily, 13 years old and who in his unbiased opinion is totally amazeballs. Fred Barany

Barany Naturals www.baranynaturals.com.au

Fred Barany and his wife live and work in the beautiful Gippsland region of Victoria. Their family business Barany Naturals was borne just over 12 months ago out of a desire to find gentle and nourishing products to use in the family home. Fred and his family embrace back to basics principles in their home and make healthy and natural living choices a priority, specifically to help manage particularly sensitive skin for our young family. Barany Naturals make a variety of handmade, all natural and chemical free products which are nourishing for the skin, good for your soul and gentle on the environment. All products are handmade in small batches using tried and tested techniques. Barany Naturals uses only natural vegetable oils, quality essential oils, all-natural colourants and botanical ingredients… and a whole lot of love. The product range includes natural soaps (Body, Shampoo and Face Bars), Sugar Scrubs, Butter Bath Bombs, Natural Laundry and Dishwasher Powder. Fred Barany gets a buzz from creating a business from the beginning. Working together as a family, “to be honest, a lot of the time it doesn’t feel like work at all”. Working from home, Fred is able to fully engage in family life and prioritise time to spend more time with family and activities.

Windows 10 - To Upgrade or Not When Microsoft released Win 10 for free we were prepared to be sceptical, but we’ve been testing it in loads of different situations, and… so far we really like it. There are a few bugs to be worked out, and some precautions to take, so we still recommend waiting a while - especially if you are a small business.

Why Wait?

What about XP users?

At the moment the software companies are still working through the problems as users report them. It makes sense to let the early birds catch all the worms, while you stroll in after the bugs are fixed.

Unfortunately XP users are not entitled to the free upgrade, so you will need to buy a copy.

Win 10 will be free for a whole year – you have until July 2016 to claim your free upgrade.

Who can get the upgrade? Anyone with a Win 7 or Win 8.1 license is entitled to the upgrade for free. Win 8 users need to add the 8.1 patch first. If you are eligible you should have a little Win10 icon on the right of your start bar.

The other bad news is that you’ll need a fresh install (whether you upgrade to Win7,8 or 10) and that means wiping your computer then adding everything back from scratch. If your PC (and business software) can handle Win10 then it’s a good option - it really is very fast and pleasant to use.

What is Win 10 like to use? Well, I’m an average Win 7 user – Dave does all of the Windows Updates and whatnot for me, and I’m a bit lost on a Win 8 machine. I have to say I rather liked Win 10. It was a very different look, but once I started to work on a document with it everything was … intuitive.

Dave’s tested the upgrade on laptops, desktops and tablets and when it goes smoothly you keep all of your data, network settings and drivers (in other words everything that worked before the upgrade still works afterwards).

Win 10 actually seems to encourage those little customisations that help you to work more efficiently - everywhere I went just one right click of my mouse gave me options that I really liked.

The only exception will be any specialised software that isn’t Win 10 friendly yet. If your business relies on a special database or CAD program you’ll need to check with the software providers to see whether they are ready for you to upgrade.

I loved the new photo editor that comes with Win10. It’s not a full Photoshop, but I could apply filters, boost colour and contrast to exactly where I wanted them in seconds and then share to FaceBook.

WAHP Business Australia • September 2015

Windows 10 - To Upgrade or Not By: Jen and Dave from Help Me Dave - a Sydney family IT business.

Microsoft Edge replaces Internet Explorer, and again everything worked just as I expected it to or better.

It’s visually very nice – the Reading List even keeps little photos of each website for me to scroll through later. Even the calendar on Win 10 is just nicer to use – visually and functionally well designed.

In terms of speed: Win10 has improved the speed on every machine we tested. The more ‘stuff’ we had on the machine the bigger the improvements – and that’s across the board for desktops, laptops and tablets. Battery life in the laptops was also improved by the Win 10 upgrade. Overall I rather liked it. I’m a bit reluctant to fix what ain’t broke, but there was a part of me that missed all the ‘shiny’ when I went back to my old Windows 7 machine.

Tips for Upgrading 1) Backup (preferably with a full image) before you try it! If you aren’t sure how to do that you probably should get help before upgrading. 2) Make sure all of your updates are done – if you don’t have the icon you may need to update some of your software. 3) Disable your Anti-virus software before you start – sometimes they interfere. I love the new Photo Editor that comes with My only real grumble about Win 10 is that it’s a bit distracting. When I hit the Start button to open a document I was bombarded with Live Tiles – changing images flickering between my photos, hot news stories and a dozen other things. They look great, but the temptation to check out that news article or stare mesmerised at the screen was just too much. Luckily for attentionimpaired folk (like me) a single right click will remove the tile or make it static.

4) If you have any software that you can’t live without: check the Microsoft Compatibility Centre to make sure your version is ready. If it’s not on the list you’ll need to ask the software providers. 5) The Upgrade Wizard will flag any software or hardware that it knows will have a problem – you’ll want to remove them before you continue, otherwise you’ll be needing your backup. 6) If you decide you don’t like Win 10 there is an Undo button – the Update Recovery function will reset your computer back to the way it was before the Upgrade. 7) A lot of people have had problems when they do the upgrade ‘live’ (while downloading the file). It takes a few hours to download and even one internet hiccup in that time can cause errors. Instead of clicking the icon to do a live upgrade: we prefer to download the entire file to a USB stick first – you can grab the Tool from the Microsoft Media Creation Centre.

Multi-Tasking

The merits of multi-tasking has been hotly debated over the years. Is one gender better equipped to multi-task? Is age and experience a factor? To… multi-tasking causes distractions and reduces productivity.

While some task require sole focus due to their complexity, many tasks can be simultaneously accomplished with the proper approach and planning. Developing good work habits and a strategic approach, you can train your brain to multitask effectively.

Set and Prioritise Specific Tasks

Before you dive into multi-tasking, you first need to identify and allocate priority levels to each task. High priority tasks will require your complete focus. Lower priority tasks can batched together and multi-tasked. To determine priorities for each task, ask these questions – Is there a deadline for this task? Is this task linked or could interrupt progress on other tasks? How complex is the task and will it require my undivided attention? Is the task for a client or internal work? Will completing this task quickly lead to an immediate benefit (value)?

If you answered yes to all of these questions, then the task is priority. Let’s further classify the priority level and mark each task – Urgent – less than 24 hours High – within 24 hours Medium – within 72 hours Low – within 7 days

Task Calendar

A Task Calendar will help you keep your eye on the prize and all your tasks within easy reach. Group similar tasks together and set time blocks for those tasks. If these tasks occur regularly, schedule these into your Task Calendar.

Organise and Improve Productivity Cheat Sheet

Group related Tasks

A Cheat Sheet will save you time if you compile a list of these tasks with links to documents and information. This will save you time and your multi-tasking becomes more productive as everything is at your fingertips.

Explore different Productivity Tools and Systems

Repetitive tasks that you do often are perfect for multi-tasking. They don’t require pinpoint focus as you are familiar with the task.

Reset your Concentration

Shift between multi-tasking and single focus tasks to reset and give your brain a rest. You will feel refreshed and ready to tackle another block of multi-tasking.

Exercise Different parts of your Brain

A common misunderstanding is that you switch your concentration from one task to another. This is actually serial tasking which is not as efficient. To truly multi-task, you can’t use the same part of your brain for more than one task at a time. What does this mean? If you are writing emails and talking on the phone (communication), these both use the language centre of your brain. Instead, why not combine a communication task with an action task.

Build up to a Productive Routine

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and developing a new skill like multi-tasking is a case of training your brain. Your brain is a muscle like all the others in your body.

Switching to unrelated tasks will impact your focus. Group related tasks, such as for the same project or client together. Avoid jumping between unrelated tasks.

You don’t need to start from scratch, there are proven productivity systems in the marketplace. The pomodoro technique uses a timer to break work down into 25 minute sets with a short break between. It is based upon the idea that frequent breaks increase mental agility. The big rocks method is based on the premise that productivity isn’t about doing a lot of stuff – ‘it is about getting the important stuff done’. Tackle the ‘big rocks’ first – urgent and high priority tasks. There are many productivity mobile and desktop apps available. Remember everyone is different, find the productivity system that works for you and then stick with it.

Finally, shut down those Devices

Multi-tasking will take all your attention and you don’t want to get distracted. Avoid texting on your mobile, put it on silent for a bit. Stay away from social media unless it is in your group of tasks. Training your brain to multi-task effectively takes practice, but with planning and using these multi-tasking tips you will improve your productivity.

Multi-tasking doesn’t come naturally to everyone, but you will find that your efficiency and productivity will improve with practice. Start with small simple tasks to build up your skills.

How does Crowdfunding Work? 1. Post your business idea as a Campaign on the crowdfunding website. 2. If people want to support your campaign they can donate money to help you achieve your goal.

You have an idea! A new product or project, but you just need a bit of help to get it off the ground.

3. Reach your goal and fund your business idea.

Traditional options – bank finance, grants and equity funding or crowdfunding.

Sounds Simple!

Crowdfunding is gaining popularity and may be the answer. Platforms such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Pozible and GoFundMe are just a few.

It sounds so simple, but there is more to it, to get a successful outcome and reach your target funding goal.

Financing your Projects WAHP Business Australia • September 2015

Crowd Funding - Financing your Projects

15

Plan carefully Planning is an important part of crowdfunding. You need to show people why they should support your campaign.

Tell your story - Interact with Supporters What makes your business idea different? How will you make it stand out from the rest?

• What is the business idea, project or product? • Why should they fund your product? • What is the timeframe for developing your product if the target goal is reached? • What incentives and rewards will your supporters get for funding your product?

Successful campaigns rely on a good story or ‘pitch’ to get attention and support.

Set goals Create a plan with milestones that covers your funding goals – include lots of details and be realistic. This will help you know how much time you will need to reach your target, hit all the milestones and start your project.

Expand the reach of your campaign and interacting with your supporters via social media. Inform and update regularly about your progress - increases the chance of your supporters sharing your campaign in their networks. Use social media to connect with your audience and supporters. Popular social media tools are – Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIN, GooglePlus and YouTube. Share your campaign on your blog and issue a press release to the media.

Allocate time each day to spend on your campaign. A successful campaign is because of persistence and regular contact with your supporters. Learn from Successful Campaigns Do your Research! Take the time to check out successful crowdfunding campaigns for ideas, how to pitch and grow your project. Find other products similar to yours and learn from their mistakes and successes. Could these campaigns lead to potential customers and partners?

Where to post your crowdfunding campaign There are many crowdfunding platforms and each are different. Do the research and find the one that has produced successful campaigns similar to your project. Crowdfunding platforms have different criteria • • • •

Type of business ideas they accept People they reach Requirements (ie. campaign set timeframes) Fees (ie. upfront fees, others only charge if campaign is successful) • How they can help to promote your idea Post your campaign To attract supporters, you want your campaign stand out! Present your business idea in a unique way to achieve this. Need inspiration? Look at successful funded campaigns to learn how they did it.

Thank your backers and Supporters Congratulations on successfully reaching your campaign target. Don’t forget to take the time to thank your supporters and send out the promised incentives/rewards. Follow up and keep your supporters in the loop as you implement your business idea. Keep your supporters interested, they may be your future customers. Did you mention Rewards? A rewards shows your supporters that you appreciate them. These are sometimes called perks or incentives and vary depending on the level of support. Get creative and offer a perk to get their attention. Legal issues for Crowdfunding Depending upon the type of business idea you are seeking to crowdfund, you may need to register for licenses or meet legal terms and conditions. The type of rewards or incentives you intend to give your supporters may also require these too. If your business idea or rewards are a finance product you should seek further advice before going ahead. If your campaign is considered a pre-purchase arrangement for a product or service, this activity is regulated under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 also incorporating Australian Consumer Law. Both of these prohibit businesses from making false or misleading representations to consumers. Visit the Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s guidance on crowd funding for more information on the legal requirements of crowdfunding in Australia.

Home Office Makeover - 5 Budget friendly Tips

You need to see what you have to work with, so the first step is to declutter your workspace.

Slow Cooker Meals

De-Stress your time in the Kitchen Plan your slow cooker meals for the week ahead. Prepare each meal ahead of time, store in a freezer bag and into the freezer. It is that easy! Organising your week by having your meals ready to go each day will increase your time to spend with the family. No more time spent preparing meals each night. Does that sound attractive? The longest process of cooking any meal is the preparation. The solution is the Slow Cooker Dump Bags. Why do we call it a dump bag? Simple, you will dump the contents into the Slow Cooker, turn it on and it will be ready at dinner time.

TIPS Label all meals with the name of the meal, the date it was frozen, any ingredients it that may need to be added (stock, water, canned tomatoes, etc.) and cooking time (e.g. 8 hours on low, 4 hours on high). Use a water proof permanent marker to ensure the writing stays on. Avoid freezing foods that are ones high in water content such as zucchini, yellow squash and potatoes. When packing foods for freezing, remove most of the air as this will cause freezer burn. Remove slow cooker meal dump bag from freezer the night before to defrost, then just dump it in the slow cooker in
