Fairy Tale BUSTED Get Rich Quick schemes... Don’t Work!

Helen Dayman

Get rich quick schemes all have the same promise… a high return in the shortest time. Sounds great and might even look great on paper. But is it really? What are the key ingredients? Fantastic opportunity, invest money for a high return quickly. Perfect! Who doesn’t want to be a millionaire? In most cases, the only people getting rich are those at the top of the ladder. Most get rich schemes are modelled on the pyramid or ponzi schemes. Sources –

Business Small business owners are targeted as Entrepreneurs. A picture is painted of ‘you can be the next Richard Branson’. Nice… Your get rich quick package will include lots of great information on how to get you from ‘scraping by’ to ‘jet-setting around the globe’. Your Mentor is already living that lifestyle and you can too. Sounds fantastic! You are invited to a free local information session where everyone is pumped up and excited. There is a dynamic charismatic presenter and a “live” feed (on screen) to your international mentor. Exciting $figures are shown that you can achieve in a short time using this program. Not many details yet, but it is exciting. How do you get rich quick? By inviting family, friends and anyone else you can get along to an information session. Yes, you are reselling this same concept. Your product is an information session and this is your path to wealth. Potential earnings are from a percentage of each person signing up and could include a percentage of their signups (pyramid structure). Let’s talk money. How much will it cost you to invest? These opportunities vary from a small $500 up to $10,000 or more.

Try this option instead – Keep that $10,000 in your pocket. Join business networking groups local and online. If you are still searching for a business idea that will tick all the boxes - engage a business or life coach. Once you have a plan for your business, that $10,000 will come in handy setting up your business for success. Keep networking. You have established contacts already who may turn into your first customers. In the race to Get Rich Quick -vs- Plan for Success, which do you think will win? While there are a few overnight success stories of those who ‘got rich quick’, they are few. Many successful business people like Richard Branson, got there on hard work. Richard Branson in an interview with LinkedIn Executive Editor Daniel Roth, said what made him so successful was enormous amounts of luck; working during the day, night and weekends; and moving quickly.

Ultimately, how well you succeed in business comes down to one person – YOU; and of course Real story. I knew a person who invested $10,000 hard work. Content is still King! Content for your website, social media and blog. Content to drive traffic to your website and increase your customer base. Good content might be informational (ebooks, blog posts, infographics, case studies), promotional (podcast, video, image), educational (course, webinar, white papers). Great content doesn’t just attract traffic to your website… it converts this traffic into action – repeat customers and sales. Content Marketing incorporates each of these elements and varied content types into a program schedule that tells a story. Network like a Pro

Tips for Face-to-Face Networking It is easy to get caught up in online networking via social media platforms. These are integral to your business marketing plan, but should not be your only networking activity. There is no substitute to networking and meeting people face-to-face. Do you attend networking events as part of a group? It is easy to squander networking opportunities by staying in your comfort zone and talking to friends. Take the plunge and attend events by yourself. It is easier to approach a single person than approach a group. You are likely to make more connections too. Be selective in the types of networking events you attend. Ask yourself what you hope to achieve. Do you want to build collaborative relationships? An industry or like-minded networking event would meet your needs. Do you want to introduce your product to potential customers? You may find a more general networking event business people from all industries would be suitable. Arrive on time or early, this will give you opportunities to meet more people. Although don’t rush your conversations, it is unrealistic to expect to meet all attendees. A productive conversation with one person will be of more benefit than fleeting conversations with ten.

Take the initiative and introduce yourself first. Once this is done, the pressure is off and you can give the other person your full attention. Meet the other person’s eyes, smile warmly and shake their hand. Once you’ve introduced yourself, you can focus more fully on the other person. Show your interest by listening and responding. You will find that most people respond positively to confidence. Make sure you have a supply of business cards to exchange with other networkers. It is also important to follow up within a week of the event. Connect on social media the same day while your shared networking experience is still fresh. Follow up with an ecard, handwritten note, text or phone call. Leave a message letting them know you enjoyed meeting the person. Don’t rely on email alone as it may not make it to the intended inbox – email filters sometimes do too good a job. Connections made at these events can then be continued through phone and social media contact. Networking face-to-face will expand opportunities for your business.

Money Credit Reports Credit reports are a list of every time you have applied for a finance product. These can range from phone plans, electricity, short term loans to home loans and business loans. This list also details every time you have missed a payment, defaulted on the product as well as any payment arrangements. The report does not show that a contract amount has been repaid. This is only shown in the credit report after a contract has been in default and a payment arrangement has been successfully paid back. There is no such thing as a good credit report. Helen Dayman WAHP Business Australia It has been 12 months since Google first started rolling out warnings on non-secure websites. There are still many sites that are shown as unsecure in Google search and in browsers. Is your website one of them? The key changes are SSL Certificates and https. Let’s break it down. What is SSL? SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. It is a protocol that helps to encrypt communications over a computer network and/or internet. What is https? HTTPS is Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure and is used to transmit secure communications over a network, like the internet. Your data is kept safe. HTTPS ensures that no-one tampers with the data and it is unable to be forged. You may have already seen a few warnings pop up on pages you visit that only use the http: protocol. Google announced in 2014 the change from http to the more secure https protocol. How is the data more secure? Authentication – verifies the ownership of the website. Sadly, many websites have been scraped and duplicated. Now you can check for the green lock to identify a secure website. Data Integrity – a secure website reduces the risk of data being tampered in transit. Encryption – security of communications between client and server. Data in forms and credit card information for ecommerce sites are encrypted to protect data. Page 26

SSL & Google How does it affect your Business website How to identify a secure website? Symbols will be shown in the address bar Secure Website – If you have used Chrome, you may already have seen the green lock or a closed lock. This means a SSL certificate has been installed and the site is secure. Unsecure Website – an open lock will be shown. This means that the website is not using a private connection, there is no SSL certificate and data could be at risk. Dangerous Website – a warning triangle symbol is shown. This means that the website has been flagged as dangerous. Within Chrome browsers, all websites without an SSL certification will display the ‘not secure’ red triangle. How will this affect your website and business? You may already have seen some websites affected. You go to a website and a warning message comes up. Google is rolling out these security warnings in stages. This means that these changes have the potential to affect all websites who do not have a SSL certificate and https. Traffic will be reduced to non-secure sites. Without a SSL certificate for your websites, you risk losing traffic and business. New customers searching online will by-pass websites that do not have the SSL certificate and use the https protocol. Existing customers will be unable to make purchases online as eCommerce payment gateways are stopping payments from nonsecure sites. What can you do now? Get your website secure and meeting the new security standards. This means a SSL certificate for your website and access via https. You may be able to purchase SSL certificates through your hosting provider, and some may provide one free as part of the hosting package.

In a nutshell… to operate your business online – you need a SSL certificate and https access.

The search engines will recognize this change and gradually move your website up the rankings. You have heard CONTENT is KING. That is not an invitation to pump out a heap of blog posts in one day and you’ll automatically be pushed to the top of the search engines. Sadly, it doesn’t work that way. Content may be King, but QUALITY Content rules above all. Write content that matters. Answer questions and queries your customers and visitors want to know. Position yourself as the Expert in your industry. This may be a better long-term approach. Use the general rule of quality over quantity, followed by consistently creating and distributing relevant content. Each blog post should be a minimum of 300 words with images or embedding a video on your page relevant to the topic of your blog article. IMPORTANT: Plan Ahead - Schedule time to create regular content to your website. Beyond… it’s all about distribution of that content on a regular basis to search engines, and via social media and your newsletters.

Understanding

myGov

Accessing government services are increasingly being directed towards the myGov app. myGov is a secure way to access government agencies and services online with one login and one password. Over the next few years there will be an increasing range of government agencies and services that can only be accessed online via the myGov platform.

Services participating in the ‘Update your Details’ service are Australian JobSearch, Australian Taxation Office, Centrelink and Medicare.

Like many new online services, the rollout of myGov has not been without a few hiccups.

myGov does not hold any information about users. It acts as a central hub and conduit between the different online systems run by each government agency.

Understanding how this service works may help you navigating myGov less stressful.

A big bonus is that you can now use the ‘Update You can link these government services to your Your Details’ service to update your address and myGov account: contact details. These changes are then sent to your linked government agency.

You can access all correspondence from the one myGov Inbox. Keep your letters, statements and messages safe, secure and in the one place. You can get notices from: Australian Taxation Office | Centrelink Child Support | Medicare Department of Veterans' Affairs National Disability Insurance Scheme

Protecting your Privacy Linking each of the different government service agencies to your myGov can be daunting and is designed to be secure. This process places security of your private information as very important. Access is only granted after you provide several different types of identification that are specific to you.

Lifestyle How to use myGov

Problems with myGov?

It is quite easy to setup your myGov account. Let’s get you started by creating your myGov account.

You can also call the myGov helpdesk on 13 23 07 and select Option 1 (Monday-Friday 7am-10pm, SaturdaySunday 10am-5pm).

1. Go to my.gov.au and select Create a myGov account. 2. Read the terms of use, then select I agree to continue. 3. Enter an email address. (This email can only be used by one person and one myGov account. It can’t be shared.) 4. You will receive a confirmation code by email. Enter that code into your account application. 5. You will be offered the option to add a security code to your account (see below). 6. Create a password. 7. Choose and answer three secret questions. (Select questions that only you can answer, easy to answer and are unlikely to change over time.) 8. Congratulations, you have now created your myGov account. Look out for an email with your myGov username. You also have the option to use your email address or mobile phone number to log in. You can now set up your myGov Inbox notification preferences or link your account to other government agencies such as the ATO, Medicare and Centrelink.

Security Codes Security codes add extra protection to your myGov account Instead of answer your 3 secret questions each time you log into myGov, you can opt for using a Security Code. These add an extra level of security and protection to your myGov account. To activate Security Codes, you can either turn on during your initial setup or do it later. Sign in and follow the prompts. More information is available at the myGov security codes pages. If you have Security Codes activated, each time you attempt to sign into your account a security code will be sent via SMS to your mobile. You will need to enter this security code to login.

Using the myGov app You can access the myGov service by the website at https://my.gov.au or you can download the myGov app free from the App Store or Google Play. Advantages to the app is that is available at your fingertips on your mobile. The app also creates a one-time access code for your mobile device which you can enter after your username and password. This code can be used instead of the SMS code or answering a secret question.

Complaints or suggestions about myGov can be made using the Centrelink feedback form. You ay need your Centrelink Customer Reference Number (CRN), if you don’t have one you can select Third Party Organisation option at Step 2. Enter myGov as organisation name and then complete your details. Make it very clear your complaint relates to myGov, you will then be directed to the myGov team. myGov only handle enquiries bout the myGov service or your myGov account. Enquiries regarding other agencies, should be direct to that agency. myGov service is designed to help you navigate the many services the government provides and linking services you use in the one place.

Linking Services to your myGov Once your myGov account is setup, you can now link it to government services and agencies. Medicare and ATO are often linked. Let’s link your myGov account to the ATO: 1.Log into your myGov account. 2.Go to the Services page and find the ATO listing. Select to start the linking process. 3.Agree to myGov storing your legal name and date of birth. 4.Provide additional information to identify your ATO record: 5.If you have an ATO online account, use your Tax File Number (TFN) and ATO account password to link myGov. 6.If you don’t have an ATO online account, confirm your identity by answering a series of questions specifically related to you - your TFN, given name, surname and date of birth. This information must match exactly the details held by the ATO. 7.Have your details have changed since you last dealt with the ATO? You will need to update them before you can complete the link. (Visit www.ato.gov.au and search for ‘updating your details’.) 8.Agree to the terms and conditions. 9.Answer two questions from information in: a)a notice of assessment received in the past five years b)a PAYG payment summary received in the past two years c)a super account statement from the past five years d)a dividend statement from the past two years e)a Centrelink payment summary from the past two years 10.Bank account details (must be the account your income tax refund was paid into last year, or has earned interest in the past two years) First time tax lodger - you will need to call the ATO to get a unique linking code to help complete this process.
