In May of 2018 in the Lee Valley, Paul Fleming stumbled upon an old tin shed. “It was completely covered in gorse and you could only see it from a few feet away,” he says. Thought to have been made in the 1920s from old flattened tin drums, Paul, who is a member of the Top of the South History club, shared the find on the club’s Facebook page. It brought back some memories for a few of its members. John Patterson remembers spending the night in a similar shed with his family when he was about 3 or 4. ‘His mum was terrified when a pig started bashing the hut’. The Top of the South History is a social group that shares old photos and information in an attempt to preserve the past and this weekend they are getting together at Rabbit Island. The group was started in April 2018 as a follow-on from a very popular West Coast history group. It was decided to create one for the top of the South Island, bringing in Nelson, Stoke, Richmond, Motueka, Golden Bay and the surrounding areas. Old photos are posted online and members provide information and missing names if possible. The BBQ and picnic on Saturday will be an opportunity for many of the members to meet for the first time and put a face to a name.
