THE

JOHN CRAIG GUIDE ‘MACHO’ IN ITALIAN

LUXURY MADE REAL

Luxury, elegance, style. Those words are too often abstractions that mean different things to different people. But to see those words take shape in the physical world, try on an Emanuel Berg shirt. Then you’ll see those lofty concepts become real in the mirror. The brand has become a symbol of exclusivity for its dress shirts. It’s a family company, owned by Jaroslaw and Petra Berg-Szychulda, who select the Italian fabrics and assemble the collections themselves. Emanuel Berg is worn by an elite clientele—one that prefers a perfect fit and a diverse selection—so it’s only natural that you can get it at John Craig. Make luxury, elegance and style come to life in your wardrobe with an Emanuel Berg shirt.

Can a clothing line be elegant and masculine at the same time? Can it employ oldschool artisans and yet still have cutting-edge styles? The short answer to both is Baldassari, one of John Craig’s favorite lines of knitwear and sportswear this season. Trends change, but the brand’s overall image remains the same— Baldassari personifies a strong and confident man who exudes modern elegance. In short, macho. The look was born in the petri dish of fashion, Milan, specifically the Brera district. It was there, in the 1970s, that Maurizio Baldassari absorbed the industry savvy that would inspire him to start his own line. This fall, look for his collection at John Craig. Try on Baldassari and wear macho.

A READ FOR SPEED

FALL/WINTER 2021

Whether your first car was a Dodge Viper or a humble Ford sedan, you probably put pedal to the metal once or twice and dreamed of being a Formula One racer. Life’s become more sensible since then, but somewhere deep inside those dreams survive. So take a look at Formula 1: The Impossible Collection (Assouline). In this book, author and former New York Times Formula One reporter Brad Spurgeon describes 100 memorable moments from the previous century that helped catapult F1 to the third spot in popularity (behind the Olympics and World Cup soccer) among the world’s sporting events. With vivid photos, descriptive narratives and insightful interviews, the book highlights races, technological achievements and notable names such as Bruce McLaren, Enzo Ferrari and Michael Schumacher. Consider it the motorsports book to end all books, the winner of the checkered flag.

PINING FOR GREAT DINING EXPERIENCE

Move over, happy hour, and make way for Golden Hour, a daily after-work stretch where cocktails flow for a laid-back-yet-sophisticated experience. That’s the vibe embraced at The Pinery, a fine-dining establishment now open in Orlando. The restaurant itself pays homage to Orlando’s past—it’s named for the former pineapple plantations along Lake Ivanhoe and incorporates the city’s historical architectural elements. But its tribute to the city as well as its scenic setting overlooking the lake and downtown Orlando is bested only by a delicious menu with fresh Florida ingredients. The offerings change according to the season—mains like Florida grouper and Frenched pork chop with delectable honey-roasted sweet potatoes graced a recent menu. And, of course, there’s the Golden Hour options, featuring items like fire-roasted corn fritters, seasonal Florida fish tacos and Cedar Key clams. Great taste for a refined audience: No wonder why we at John Craig love The Pinery so much! THE PINERY, 295 NE IVANHOE BLVD., SUITE A, ORLANDO, 407.377.7576, THEPINERYORLANDO.COM

Discerning men who want the highest quality clothing come to John Craig—with clothing from more than 60 of the world’s best designers on hand, guys are sure to find what they want and need. But for the man who wants a little more, who wants to add a personal touch to the already great garments, there’s John Craig’s made-to-measure program. Here’s how it works: Come into John Craig, where our experts will talk to you about your clothing needs and discuss personal style. Then it’s time to choose your favorite base garment: suits and sportcoats from Kiton, Isaia, Canali, Hickey Freeman, Samuelsohn or John Craig Private Label, for instance, or Emanuel Berg or Eton dress shirts. Then there are more personal choices, like fabric and customized options, including jacket linings, buttons, contrasting lapel thread, functioning button holes and more. Of course, you’ll be measured by one of our well-trained clothing consultants, ensuring that your suit, sportcoat or trousers fit you like, well, a glove. From fitting to delivery, each element of the made-to-measure experience is tailored to you at John Craig. Customization is everything; it’s also a modest investment of time, and, if we may say so ourselves, an excellent deal. The only downside: Once you’ve tried made-to-measure, you may never be able to go back to off-the-rack.

THE JOHN CRAIG GUIDE CHEER FOR THE CHECKMATES

GENTLE WEAR FOR GENTLEMEN In clothing as in art, the Italian sense of style and artistry is a potent one. Based in the northern Italian city of Brescia, Boglioli is a company that reflects that potency. What defines its offerings? Lightweight garments with a neat cut. Sleek shapes and a palette of versatile, understated hues. Masterful tailoring in luxurious cotton and wool. Leisurely and relaxed, not just for work. Think of Boglioli as “the softer suit.” But while its style is tasteful, polished and sophisticated, it never sacrifices masculinity. It’s all Italian and all man. If Michelangelo’s David ever got tired of standing around in the buff, he’d wear Boglioli.

If the folks at Pantone can select a design hue of the year—the king of color is celebrating “Ultimate Gray” and the golden “Illuminating” in 2021—the style pros at John Craig recommend a go-to shade for fall. Tobacco is one of the hottest colors in menswear, and it’s taking over essentials like pants and sweaters as well as accessories like belts and ties. This season, why not skip stonecolored pants and add flair with tobacco-dyed denim; or ditch the black jacket and don a sun-baked brown bomber to light up the night? Stop by any John Craig store and let us show you fall’s best garments in this vibrant shade.

Every sport relies on star power—LeBron James and Tom Brady are always must-see TV. But today a quieter game is creating stars of its own: chess. Long considered a pursuit for child prodigies and men’s clubs, chess is garnering a new following. Tournament-tested and world-ranked players are taking their games to social media and live-streaming sites, calling “checkmate” while showing off their chess skills and personalities. They also take on ordinary folks on sites like chess.com. You may not buy jerseys as you do for your favorite athletes—instead, you’ll hit the “follow” or “subscribe” button to show support for the top chess players. If you’re wondering whom to follow, here are four top players: Magnus Carlsen (pictured). It’s easy to mistake this 30-yearold Norwegian for an actor, but he’s all business—sometimes ruthlessly so—on the chessboard when the sportcoat comes off. He’s the world’s top-ranked chess player, a grandmaster (GM) and a pretty good competitor in other games as well: Check out some of his sporty shots on Instagram (@magnus_carlsen). Hikaru Nakamura. Born in Japan but raised in the U.S., Nakamura is a top-20-in-the-world player and one of Carlsen’s biggest rivals. He earned the GM title at 15, becoming the youngest American at the time to achieve that feat. Now 33, he competes in international competitions and matches on chess.com and has fans worldwide thanks to his popular Twitch stream and YouTube channel (GMHikaru on both services). Alexandra Botez. This 25-year-old woman FIDE master is a social media celeb thanks to her prowess on the black-andwhite squares. (The initials FIDE stand for the International Chess Federation’s name in French.) Dallas-born, Vancouverraised Botez competes in global tourneys and against opponents on chess.com, and she’s built a massive fan base thanks to her Twitch and YouTube accounts. The channels (BotezLive on both services) follow her and her chessplaying little sister, Andrea, in their daily activities, such as challenging chess hustlers in New York’s Washington Square and Union Square parks. Keti Tsatsalashvili. A grandmaster since 2010, this 29-yearold Tbilisi, Georgia, native conquered the chess world early, capturing plenty of international titles before she turned 18. Since then she’s added chess commentator to her arsenal of roles, hosting championships and titled tournaments across the globe. Like Botez, she runs an active YouTube channel and Twitch account (LetsChessLive), where she streams her online matches from chess.com.

RISING STAR

Breakout Moment Thanks to his role on Bridgerton, British actor Regé-Jean Page is drawing major attention—and so are his sartorial choices. oping, but he knows what he likes. His sartorial style is what he has called “very safe,” typically consisting of turtlenecks and shawl-collar sweaters paired with slim jeans and low-top sneakers—a far cry from the Duke’s romantic formalwear. But, like his alter ego, Page knows how to dress for the occasion. For his February 2021 hosting gig on Saturday Night Live, he opted for a single-breasted black suit jacket and slim black trousers by Alexander McQueen with a jeweled brooch. Then, at the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards in April (where he was a nominee), Page wore a dark velvet tuxedo and a printed shirt by Louis Vuitton, which he accessorized with Kurt Geiger London loafers and a diamond huggie earring. “Baseline, you should be able to have fun with your fashion,” he said in a 2020 interview with Who What Wear. “I don’t know how eloquent I am in that language, but I very much admire it.” It’s a shame for many reasons that Page won’t be a part of Bridgerton’s forthcoming second season—word has it that the next slate of episodes will focus on other characters’ relationships rather than Simon and Daphne’s. But fans who burn for Regé-Jean can take comfort in knowing there is a lot more to come from this gem of an actor—sartorially and otherwise.

Phoebe Dynevor plays Simon’s wife Daphne on Bridgerton, and sorry, ladies, but Regé-Jean Page is taken in real life too: His girlfriend is fellow Brit Emily Brown, a part-time copywriter, part-time soccer player.

FALL/WINTER 2021

They say the clothes make the man, but Regé-Jean Page’s elaborate Regency-era wardrobe in the hit TV series Bridgerton can’t take all the credit for the strong impression he’s made. After all, in the key honeymoon scenes in Episode 6, he’s—well, let’s just say costumes aren’t a key factor. Still, on the series, he makes the Duke of Hastings, aka Simon Basset, a memorable character, and what he wears he wears well. The same is proving true of the 31-year-old actor himself. As a performer and as a fashion exemplar, Page is turning out to be a memorable fashion player. The Netflix show, based on the novel series of the same name, is Page’s big claim to fame so far. Yes, he had a few small yet notable roles beforehand—he played Chicken George in the 2016 reincarnation of the miniseries Roots and was a regular in Shonda Rhimes’ one-season-wonder legal drama For the People. Still, Bridgerton, also a Rhimes creation, was the perfect casting match for Page. It displays his unmatched ability to wear period pantaloons and riding boots with ease. Hey, not everyone can make a Lord Byron-inspired wardrobe appealing. Born in London to a Zimbabwean nurse mother and an English preacher father, Page spent his early childhood in Harare, then moved back for secondary school to England, where he discovered acting thanks to the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain. Page’s real-life fashion sense, much like his career, is still devel-

Backyard weddings and virtual ceremonies worked in a pinch, but formal events have

9/29/21 2:36 PM

SHIRT COLLAR: Those headed to the most formal

PANT LEG LENGTH: Though you’ve shown plenty of ankle this summer, keep them covered at a formal event. Our tailors will be sure that your pants aren’t too short and also aren’t bunching on the bottom. In general, trousers should have half or no break. The half break is standard, showing a slight dent where the hem rests on the top of the shoe.

PANT LEG WIDTH: Finding a cut that flatters your waist, thighs and calves is key. In other words, pants that are too tight will wrinkle, while anything that has too much material runs the risk of appearing baggy and sloppy.

JACKET LENGTH: There are a couple rules of thumb that are easy to follow: The jacket should cover your rear end and, with your arms at your side, the garment should end between your thumb’s knuckle and base.

JACKET SLEEVE: For the perfect length, be sure the sleeve shows about a half-inch of the shirt cuff— just enough for others to see your fancy cufflinks.

JACKET LAPEL: Wear a silk-faced peak lapel for highly formal occasions and a rounded shawl style when you want to soften your look. A notch lapel is versatile but the least formal for a tuxedo.

JACKET CUT: A trimmer, modern fit comes with a fashion-forward and flattering silhouette—for all body types. It is slimmer through the chest and shoulder than a traditional-cut jacket, and it’s appropriate for all occasions.

BLACK-TIE IS BACK no

Comfort was key during last year’s shutdown—even our attire for weddings was relaxed, whether they were conducted over Zoom or in someone’s yard. Of course, you never failed to look your best, but attending life’s most special moments just wasn’t the same because you weren’t dressed to the nines. The good news is that “normal” has returned, as you likely have noticed thanks to the abundance of invitations to weddings and galas that have appeared in your mailbox. That means it’s time to visit us at John Craig, where we’ll size you up for your new made-tomeasure tux. From a perfect-fitting jacket from go-to names like Canali, Kiton and Samuelsohn to modern accessories, our tailors and stylists will go through the checklist here and make sure, item by item, that you’re ready to go when the next big event arrives.

SHIRT FRONT: Pull off a timeless look with a smooth, slim-fit, bib-front shirt in a pique fabric with room for studs. Other clean looks are a shirt with no placket and concealed buttons, and a pleated front worn with studs.

SHIRT COLLAR: Those headed to the most formal wedding or fundraiser can’t go wrong with the wing, a stand-up collar with downward points. For a modern, less formal look, a mandarin collar with bow tie or a spread collar with necktie will certainly turn heads.

rests on the top of the shoe.

Double-sided cufflinks for your French-cuff shirt will give you a polished look, more than the T-bar variety. Stud sets should match, or closely resemble, your cuff links. A tuxedo paired with a bow tie is considered appropriate attire for the most formal weddings and special events. The black silk satin bow tie is the classic choice and a failsafe whether you’re the groom, a guest of honor or simply someone attending a black-tie affair. On any given day, have fun mixing pocket square colors and folds with your sportcoats. You can even go bold during daytime weddings and fundraisers. But when it comes to the most formal events, there is nothing more classic than a white silk square in a presidential fold. Patent loafers and oxfords are a sure-fire hit for the most formal events. Or keep things low-key by choosing the styles in suede or polished leather.

IT’S ALL IN THE JEANS Feeling blue over finding perfect denim? Let John Craig’s style pros go to work for you—knowing pants is in their blood.

| JOHN CRAIG

Most men didn’t spend their childhood playing dress up; seldom do boys protest which T-shirt or sweater they would wear, and rarely do the make a fuss over a pair of pants. For these guys, few things change over the years. Even the most discerning gentleman today doesn’t want to spend a lot of time in a dressing room: It’s usually “get the perfect fit and go”—especially when it comes to wardrobe basics like denim. At John Craig, we understand that many men may not want to get worked up while looking for jeans, but we also know that finding the perfect pair takes more than searching for a size tag on the waistband. A department store brand with a 32x30 tag, for instance, might fit differently when compared with John Craig’s high-quality denim by designers like AG and DL1961. When you visit John Craig, Craig DeLongy and our other style pros will talk to you even before you start trying on pants. “We focus on getting the fit right as quickly as possible,” says DeLongy. He and the team ask three basic questions: 1. Do you like low rise or mid rise? “Mid-rise jeans tend to be most popular with our customers.” 2. How fitted do you want them? “Some men like their jeans to be quite fitted around the thigh, but others want to be more comfortable.” 3. What kind of leg opening do you like? “The trend is slim, but our best-selling fit is still regular straight leg.” Once the staff gets your answers, they’re good to go. Inventory experts, they’ll know to grab jeans from brands like AG, DL1961, Citizens of Humanity and Monfrère, among others. “We’ll get the fit right in less than three tries,” says DeLongy. But John Craig goes beyond fit. Denim is about style too. “Then we can talk about washes—a dark, clean pair that you can dress up or something more fun with detailing and distressing,” he says. “We have a jean for every guy of every age…but you have to find the right fit first.”

9/29/21 2:38 PM

SKINNY FIT Popularized by young hipster types in the late ’00s, the skin-tight denim phenomenon stuck around for about a decade before trends began to shift. But with slight modifications, today’s skinny-fit jeans are both fashionable and comfortable—and yes, they do allow breathing. How they fit: The skin-tight feeling has given way to something more modern. Keep doing those squats because this style still hugs your seat and thighs. Most are mid-rise, meaning that the waistline will sit slightly below your belly button, but guys with uber-thin, Mick Jagger-type bods will benefit from a low-rise jean that sits closer on the hip. Dudes also should pay attention to the level of skinniness in the leg. Many brands still offer jeans that carry the close fit all the way through the ankle, but if that tightness is too boy-band for you, opt for a pair with only a slight taper at the bottom. Who’s wearing them: Paparazzi often capture style icon Harry Styles wearing a pair of black denim skinny jeans with a statement button-up and Chelsea boots, but your day-to-night look can be perfect with a lightwash pair and a long-fit T-shirt. And while skinny fit may be favored by the nightclub crowd, it’s also suitable for the discerning man. Pair a subtler skinny jean with a sportcoat and loafers for a sophisticated look that is far from dated.

SLIM FIT It’s easy to use “skinny” and “slim” interchangeably in conversation, and there are indeed similarities when you’re talking about garments. But if you have a slightly fuller body, you’ll want to know the difference when putting on a pair of pants. How they fit: Like skinny-fit denim, slimfits also are close to the seat and thighs. They differ, however, in the leg opening— the calf and ankle loosen in most of the latter styles, providing greater mobility. Average slim-fit jeans are constructed with a mid-rise—meaning that the length from the crotch to the belt is anywhere between 9 and 11 inches—and give off a casual vibe. High-rise slim-fit jeans sit just above the waist and provide a neater, sometimes tailored appearance. Who’s wearing them: Slim-fit jeans are a great everyday cut for men looking to take the town by storm. Their versatility and ability to be paired with everything from sweaters and button-up shirts to sneakers and monk straps make them a preferred choice. And though they’re popular with Hollywood’s trim leading men, guys of all body types can feel confident in a pair because the slightly tapered yet close fit complements any figure.

REGULAR FIT In the beginning, jeans were utilitarian pants worn for any and every task— thus, comfort was the priority, then fashion. That meant they had to provide the wearer plenty of room to move while still appearing tidy. That’s the story of regular fit. How they fit: Unlike slim-fit denim, which has a narrow silhouette and hugs the body, regular-fit jeans have a straight fit through the hips and thighs. In other words, they’re not too loose, not too tight. Though there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all pant, regular fit comes close. For shorter guys the style’s mid-rise adds balance while elongating the body’s frame. Taller fellows also benefit from the mid-rise, which can reduce the visual appearance of long legs. Who’s wearing them: Once worn mostly by blue-collar workers on the job, these jeans are perfect for casual Fridays at the office. The extra fabric standard in regular jeans gives added comfort to all body types. This style pairs well with sport shirts and boots for a casual or rugged look, but a darker wash can be dressed up easily with a dress shirt, sweater and monk strap shoes.

LOOSE FIT The fashion police didn’t ban baggy pants (though some U.S. cities did). In fact, this style isn’t the faux pas that some made it out to be a decade ago. By considering a few sartorial rules, you can rock loose-fitting jeans and always be in style. How they fit: Loose-fit jeans offer maxcomfort feel and max-casual vibe. That’s because the style is typically cut to sit below the waist, providing extra room in the seat and thigh area. The straight leg also is roomy, but doesn’t give off an excessive bulky or baggy appearance. A high-rise fit can help men with larger waists flatten their mid-sections and shape their rear ends; it also allows more room in the leg for dudes with bigger calves. Watch the length of the leg: Jeans should not extend past the top of the shoes. Who’s wearing it: This style is best kept in casual settings (ball games and the like), but a variety of styles—different colors, patterns and washes, for example—will keep outfits interesting. For a smart combo, wear loose jeans in a light wash with layered pieces like hoodies, bomber jackets or large coats. Because of the jeans’ relaxed nature, finish a loosefit outfit with boots or sneakers.

FALL/WINTER 2021

DENIM THAT’S NOT DENIM Gold-rush miners of the 1850s knew they were wearing durable pants, but little did they know that their garb would be a long-lasting fashion trend. Of course, indigo-dyed cotton denim has come a long way since then, going through more than a century’s worth of transformations and incarnations (some memorable, others regrettable). Today’s jeans and five-pocket pants are better than ever: They’re just as durable to wear to a 9-to-5 job, whether you’re mining or managing clients, but they are constructed with comfort and style in mind too. Top designers such as Citizens of Humanity and Monfrère are incorporating fabrics such as elastane and Lycra to give their pant formulas stretch properties. Four-way stretch denim, for instance, provides the ultimate luxury. These pants stretch in four different directions, so they move with your body while you’re on the go, and they won’t lose their shape as they stretch over time—that was an issue with earlier stretch jeans. They’re also super-soft (like your athleisure wear), so you can relax in a pair while you watch the whole ball game or binge the entire series of a Netflix show on your couch. Available in different washes and colors, stretch denim and five-pocket pants can be used equally in an office setting or out on the town. You’ll be tempted to wear them at the health club—they’re that comfortable—but go with the shorts and sweats for your workout.

THE SPORTING LIFE

PEAK LUXURY

| JOHN CRAIG

Now Jackson Hole, Wyoming, has a nearby five-star luxury hotel worthy of its stellar skiing and eye-popping vistas. By Everett Potter Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Wyoming, is one of the grand prizes of American skiing, an adventure that begins with a jaw-dropping view. Set at the base of the Teton Mountains, these jagged spires of rock are arguably the most scenic stretch of the Rocky Mountains range. Jackson Hole has long attracted the big dogs of the skiing and snowboarding world, who come here for so-called Big Mountain skiing. If you’re unfamiliar with that term, it means what it says. Jackson Hole is a behemoth, with a vertical drop of more than 4,000 feet and 2,500 acres of in-bounds terrain, on a 10,400foot mountain. While there are easier green and blue runs, you don’t head to Jackson for easy turns. It gives fresh meaning to the term “challenging.” The out-of-bounds terrain is more than 3,000 acres and, basically, if you can see it, you can ski it—but only those with avalanche gear and training are encouraged to head past the ropes. In-bounds has challenges aplenty. There are runs with enormous moguls and chutes, the most famous being Corbet’s Couloir. It starts with a fear-inducing vertical drop, a double black-diamond entry into a narrow chute where you need to start making turns instantly. I count myself among those who’ve peered over the edge, only to retreat while a braver soul gamely takes the plunge down what looks like a sheer vertical wall. Just ride the tram from the base to get a drone’s-eye view of the action as you near the top of the mountain. But hard-core skiing is only part of the story. Jackson Hole has slowly evolved over the past 20 years, and while it still attracts plenty of 20- and 30-somethings eager for a steep and deep experience, it long ago recognized that a well-heeled crowd would come for better hotels and fine dining, make a few turns and admire the dramatic vistas over cocktails. Thus Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole, Hotel Terra and Caldera House came to town, the leading edge of the luxury options at the base of the mountain, where also there are restaurants, shops and

neighborhoods with CEO-level homes that routinely sell well into mid-eight figures. The ultra-chic Amangani Resort lies a couple of miles away. At Jackson Hole, you can still have a frosty après ski beer with the cliff jumpers at the Mangy Moose bar, with Warren Miller movies playing in an endless loop. But your dining choices are more like those found in Los Angeles or New York and trend to upscale steakhouses, sushi bars and Italian trattorias. Staying at the base of the mountain is great. But you’re in Jackson Hole. Twelve miles down the road lies the town of Jackson itself, an upscale cowboy town, centered on a town square whose four corners are ringed by inventive clusters of elk antlers that had been shed and collected. Surrounding the square are wooden sidewalks a la the old West, roofed over against the elements. There’s also a range of restaurants, shops and bars, the most colorful being the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, whose neon sign shows a rider on a bronco. There’s even another ski mountain in town, Snow King, that is beloved by locals. Now, with the opening of Cloudveil in May 2021, Jackson finally has what it’s long been missing: a fivestar luxury hotel. Part of the Autograph Collection of hotels owned by Marriott, it takes its name from the Cloudveil Dome, a peak within the Grand Tetons. It’s the first major building project on the town square since 1997—and a game changer. From Cloudveil you can walk to the restaurants and shops, and you’re directly across from the town square. Skiing or riding? There’s a shuttle to slopes, so you can leave the often gnarly winter driving to the pros. The design was a group effort by three firms: TruexCullins, CLB Architects and IBI Group. There was clearly an attempt to invoke rugged local elements, so they used materials such as stone, metal and wood throughout, as well as huge windows. The lobby has a giant, 3,000-pound boulder that functions as the front desk, and the lobby fireplace

is a welcome touch. A three-story granite wall is a reminder that you’re in the heart of climbing country. The hotel has 100 rooms and suites, and the décor has accent walls of wood, banquettes, wrought iron touches and neo-midcentury-modern chairs. Some of the rooms have corner fireplaces and balconies. There are smart TVs, and the bathrooms are stocked with Grown Alchemist products. On a sensible riff on the mini-bar, each floor of the hotel has a pantry stocked with complimentary local snacks and drinks. If you need to get your heart rate up before tackling the moguls on Jackson Hole, it’s good to know that there’s a gym with weights and Peloton equipment and, for après ski, a heated outdoor pool and Jacuzzi. The hotel’s 5,000-square-foot terrace is the only rooftop space of its kind in Jackson and is designed for summertime yoga and meditation. It’s expected to be open to the community as well for music performances and stargazing. Given Jackson’s proximity to both Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks, the latter about 60 miles away, there’s little question that summer and fall will be big here as well. Nor do you need to wander far for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Bistro, a French-inspired restaurant in the hotel, is the brainchild of the Fine Dining Restaurant Group, led by Gavin Fine and Roger Freedman. Fine is the Danny Meyer of Jackson, a savvy restaurateur who has put the town on the culinary map with such acclaimed eateries as Bin22, The Kitchen, II Villaggio Osteria, Bar Enoteca, Bodega, Sugar + Spice and Bovine + Swine. It offers outdoor café dining, a zinc bar, an oyster bar and a newly established reputation as a dining destination itself. So the sage advice is to come to Jackson Hole prepared for challenges and stay for the deep creature comforts of the new Cloudveil. It’s the newly crowned cool kid on the block, perfectly positioned to offer the ultimate in Western chic in the hippest ski town in the West. Enjoy the vibe, even if you can’t quite bring yourself to leap into Corbet’s Couloir.

Opposite page, clockwise from top left: Jackson Hole has many moguls and chutes, including the legendary Corbet’s Couloir; the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar is a must-visit location in the town of Jackson; the ski resort is set at the base of the Teton Mountains; dishes like duck confit are served at The Bistro restaurant; the five-star Cloudveil hotel opened in May 2021; a cluster of elk antlers greets visitors.

Five star sips | JOHN CRAIG

When a TV headliner makes a movie it seems natural; a screen actor releasing an album of songs is less common, but still not exactly “man bites dog.” These days, however, a gaggle of showbiz celebrities is branching out further—into the spirits world. They’re pouring talents that can’t be bottled into a product that can, giving a whole new meaning to the phrase “creating buzz” and helping to endow chosen liquors with star power of their own:

GEORGE CLOONEY Casamigos Tequila

FALL/WINTER 2021

This 60-year-old actor totes a heavy bag of Hollywood hardware, including three Golden Globes and two Oscars, and plays significant social roles as a philanthropist and political influencer, but he’s also a major player in the world of spirits. His impact started in the early 2010s while he was looking for local tequilas to stock at his vacation home in Cabo San Lucas. When none of the offerings suited his taste, he sought to make his own. Along with his friend Rande Gerber and developer Mike Meldman, Clooney founded Casamigos Tequila Company in 2013, making a spirit that not only tasted great but also felt cool when consumed straight or on the rocks. As with anything Clooney touches (even his comparative box-office bust Batman & Robin was 1997’s 10th highest-grossing film), the tequila turned to gold and doubled in sales each year. But star power wasn’t the only thing behind Casamigos’ big numbers; Clooney and company knew good tequila too. The flavor profile is unlike many other varieties, as traditional herbal and citrus notes aren’t as prevalent as smooth caramel and black pepper. This makes it an ideal sip, whether it’s neat, on the rocks or mixed in a delicious cocktail. Just four years after starting the company, the team sold its operations to beverage magnate Diageo in a deal worth $1 billion.

BRUNO MARS SelvaRey Rum It’s no surprise that mixologists concocted a drink inspired by and named after Bruno Mars’ punchy groove “24K Magic,” but that cocktail isn’t the music star’s first connection to the spirits world. When Mars, who was born Peter Hernandez in Hawaii in 1985, started performing small gigs throughout the U.S., he connected with SelvaRey, a Panamanian company that catered his events and parties. And soon after he broke through with his part in “Uptown Funk,” Mars purchased a stake in the company, which produces a line of popular rums. The prize of the collection, however, is SelvaRey Owner’s Reserve, released this year. Though Mars technically co-owns the brand with brothers Seth and Marc Gold and Robert Herzig, he is the “owner” in this case. Mars worked with master distiller Don Francisco Fernandez to create this drink, a blend of 15- and 25-year-old rums that was then aged in oak barrels. The pop star not only controlled its taste—it has smooth notes of toffee, hazelnut and vanilla—but also designed the shape and color of the statuesque bottle, logo and box. And why not? He does make magic, after all.

KATE HUDSON King St. Vodka

FALL/WINTER 2021

Though some of her rom-coms have flopped and the athleisure line she founded may fall out of trend, Kate Hudson’s labor-of-love vodka brand will always be perfect for any martini. The 42-year-old actress-slash-entrepreneur took a stab at the world of liquor in 2019 for one reason: She wanted a vodka that truly satisfied her own palate. What she created was King St. Vodka, a 100 percent gluten-free beverage crafted with alkaline water that’s “7x distilled for purity.” Named for a Greenwich Village street where Hudson once lived and welcomed guests, the vodka has done more than gain the favor of her current celebrity pals: VinePair gave it an A-minus rating, while Jeff Ellingson, popular liquor critic and founder of the Best Tasting Spirits blog, awarded its Silver Medal to King St. And despite the vodka’s feminine rose-wrapped label, which was Hudson’s idea, its neutral palate and peppery finish would likely please Mr. Martini himself, James Bond.

DRAKE Virginia Black Whiskey

| JOHN CRAIG

At just 34, Toronto-born Aubrey Drake Graham is already a multifaceted global phenom. It’s tough to bet against anything he has his hands on, from making hit records and writing chart toppers to starring on the big screen and being the global ambassador of an NBA franchise (the Toronto Raptors). So when he teamed with spirits industry giant Brent Hocking, founder of the original DeLeón Tequila (which is now controlled by Diageo and Sean “Diddy” Combs), to create Virginia Black Whiskey in 2016, the result was an almost instant success. Entertainers and athletes alike enjoy a sip from the champagne-like, black-and-gold bottle, but it appeals to everyone else as well. It’s smooth on the palate with hints of toffee, vanilla and orange on the finish, a flavor that helped the spirit earn 91 points and a spot in Wine Enthusiast’s list of Top 100 Spirits of 2017.

RYAN REYNOLDS Aviation American Gin

FALL/WINTER 2021

In most cases, the after-1 a.m. crowd at your local watering hole can’t distinguish the merits of a good cocktail, so their gin-and-tonics are often mixed using the house liquor. That’s passable for last call, but those with a more discerning palate deserve better. And Christian Krogstad and Ryan Magarian gave them better in 2006, when the duo first produced what is now called Aviation American Gin (Aviation, for short) in Portland, Ore. Its flavor starts with heavy rye and lavender followed by juniper, cardamom and orange. Wine Enthusiast once gave it a 97-point rating, the highest grade the magazine had ever given to a gin. That caught the attention of actor and gin aficionado Ryan Reynolds, who bought a stake in the premium liquor company in 2018 and retained his minority ownership when spirits giant Diageo took over the brand last year for $610 million. Reynolds also still remains the face of the brand (not a bad-looking face), appearing in multiple places on the gin’s website. Also handsome are the gin’s Art Deco-inspired bottle and its flask-like silhouette.

GROOMING

When a beard gets weird Unevenness? Bare patches? A few simple tips can help your face be happily hirsute.

Face it: Facial hair seems to have a mind of its own. Just as some male chins are more thickly forested than others, many men’s faces have blank spots or areas where facial hair grows unevenly. But the answer needn’t be to go clean-shaven. With some smart strategies and a little attention to detail, you’ll be cheered by your beard. LET IT GROW. A better-defined beard is easier to shape, so play the waiting game before breaking out your trimmers. If you suspect that patches are forming, resist the temptation to shave your beard; let it grow for another month—this will give you better grooming options. There’s a good chance your facial hair will grow fuller and fill the patchy spots after a few weeks—and you may decide that a long beard fits your style. If it doesn’t fill in, however, you’ll at the very least be able to clearly identify where your beard will (and won’t) grow and shape it from there. KEEP IT TRIMMED. Though patches can sometimes be flattering on a guy’s face, it’s still important to maintain a neat and even appearance. You can incorporate patches into your style by keeping a short beard. (This also helps camouflage some patches.) But take your time shaping your beard, as a few misfires with shears or shavers will leave you with more patches than before. CLEAN UP THE LINES. A patchy beard can look clean and profesh when it has clearly defined lines. That means using a razor or trimmer to shape sharp borders around your sideburns, cheekbones, jawline and lips. Men with fuller beards should treat them every day by combing in beard oil. SEE WHAT WORKS FOR YOU. When unwanted patches are part of your beard game, managing the length of your facial hair will work wonders for its appearance. Keeping a short and even growth can minimize the appearance of patches, while a longer beard can cover the blank spots. If neither of these approaches does the job on your face, break into your lady’s makeup bag and grab an eyebrow pencil—you can shade in smaller patches using this trick.

| JOHN CRAIG

CONDITION YOUR BEARD. Just as you treat the locks on top of your head with care, the hair up front deserves the right products too. Dry and wiry facial hair can cause patches, so conditioning your beard with a good oil or balm will keep it healthy down to the follicles. Exfoliate beneath the hair to remove dry and dead skin—this will improve blood flow, which promotes thicker, healthier hair. A good diet, too, will help with facial hair growth: plenty of water, vitamins B and C and the all-important omega-3s will nourish your beard.
