When a woman walked into Safavieh’s Stamford, Connecticut, flagship store and declared, “I need an interior designer,” Sally Kellogg stood up and proclaimed, “That would be me!” And thus began an energetic meeting of the minds, a collaboration between two discerning women that led to a lifestyle transformation. Kellogg encouraged her client, Tracia, to focus on what she loved. Tracia kicked off her shoes, joined by her husband, Lou, to find comfort in a carefully selected Century Cornerstone sectional sofa with a high back and deep seats. Sophisticated companion pieces followed. An armchair by Hickory Chair is upholstered in a leaf-patterned charcoal mohair fabric by Theodore Alexander. light and plays off the nearby Martini side table. A strategically placed Theodore Alexander mirror, balancing dual metals, opens up the space, while a large abstract artwork by Jill Pumpelly, which Tracia found on her own, adds a colorful focal point. “My client has a strong artistic sense,” says Kellogg, commending Tracia’s ability to choose pieces that “she will never tire of in her new environment.” In the dining room, a live-edge dining table with a metal trestle base caters to Tracia’s sculptural sensitivities. Keeping with the refined yet comfortably modern theme, the angular dining chairs’ wing-like sides are outlined in a black welt. In the background, the Migration credenza adds a visual punch with its ethereal depiction of gold birds flying across the reverse-painted black glass. “My client loves each and every object in her home. As we worked together,” Kellogg explains, “Tracia was able to transform her environment as she uncovered her own true personal style.” Just as the designer credits her client, so Tracia gives a glowing endorsement to Kellogg for her role in creating a place people look forward to being in: “I learned that there’s a real difference between a decorator and a designer. And Sally is a true designer. She worked with me to create a space I hadn’t even dreamed was possible.” It helped that her talent and taste were made available through the resources of Safavieh’s Stamford store. As Kellogg puts it, “This wonderful showroom provides me with an endless toy box, where so many furnishings can be put together to create amazing results for every circumstance.” In this case, the result is an elegant urban interior that serves as an intriguing personal sanctuary for Tracia, Lou and their family and friends. The dining room’s live-edge table, striking chairs and dazzling credenza play well with the owner’s clear glass chandelier and the architectural brass and crystal table lamp from John-Richard.

A TALE OF TWO CITIES From his apartment on Paris’s Left Bank to his classically modern D.C. home, Thomas Pheasant is a master of understated design. If ever an interior designer elevated the use of neutrals to an art form, that designer is Thomas Pheasant. Forget any preconceptions about beige spaces being staid or emotionless. Pheasant can turn an off-white room into a visually rich and exciting environment. He proves it here with two homes of his own, his apartment on Paris’s Left Bank and his house in Washington, D.C. Pheasant, who describes his design aesthetic as a “modern evolution of classical style,” always lets the location direct the design. When it came to his Paris apartment, which he uses as a “place to breathe, reflect and get inspired,” the city’s limestone facades, gray roofs, and black iron railings inspired the architectural details and the gray and stone palette he brought into the apartment. room, add interest and complement the designer’s tufted Ritz chairs for Baker. A hypnotic Richard Serra painting and sculptural Felix Agostini sconces create a vibrant energy that plays off the tranquil palette. Wall panels and decorative plaster add layers to the neutral paint finish, while a mix of fabrics in linen, velvet and silk contribute textural interest. In the entry hall, which features an amazing view across the Seine to Sacré-Coeur, an oversized mirror temporarily placed behind a striking black cabinet quickly became permanent. Pheasant’s c. 1995 Tassel chairs and Felix Agostini sconces complete the chic look. In the bedroom, a pale palette is highlighted by natural light from the window, exuding tranquility, while a Colby Caldwell photograph adds a serene grace note. It’s no wonder the designer and his partner use this residence for inspiration and escape. Pheasant’s four-bedroom D.C. house, located just outside of Georgetown near his studio, comes with a pool house and garden that are often shared with family and friends. Despite the home’s unabashed elegance, it offers a sense of comfort and ease and serves as a fantastic display of Pheasant’s work. “Most of the pieces in

the living room and the rest of my home are my designs. They tell the story of my personal journey over the years,” he says. From his Paris sofa designed for Baker in 2005, to the Bel-Air lounge chairs from 2008, and a variety of custom pieces, the beautiful, tailored grouping in the living room shows just how well Pheasant’s collections work together. A circular bronze by artist Bruno Romeda and 1930s Chinese carved figures in the rear niches form artful focal points, while a stately, tall round table centrally placed serves visually to divide up the expansive living room. “Sculptural form, contrast, simplicity…it’s what I love,” explains Pheasant. In the sun-filled dining room, Pheasant showcases his admiration of classical elements mixed with modern ideas. A custom round bronze dining table, an antique Baccarat chandelier, and a contemporary sculpture by Eva Hild work together beautifully. The foyer, which showcases Pheasant’s deft hand and modern classical spirit, is described by him as “the perfect summation of my point of view.” It’s a point of view worth sharing.

For Lorraine Gordon, lead interior designer at Safavieh’s Broadway flagship store in Manhattan, capturing the feeling of “home” has rarely been as important as it was for this Tribeca project. The design was for the daughter of Gordon’s very first client. “When I was just starting out,” says Gordon, “her mother was the first person to trust me to design for her. That meant a lot. previous apartments for her daughter as well.” A high-school student when they first met, the daughter is now an attorney, married and working in New York. Her Tribeca home is just under 2,000 square feet, with two bedrooms and the gift of 14-foot ceilings. Oversized windows in the living area and master bedroom let in masses of light. “The bare apartment had such beautiful bones,” says Gordon. “The gorgeous brick wall, the reclaimed wood floors, the multicolored wood kitchen. We just wanted it to be comfy and cohesive, so we chose a neutral color scheme.” To balance the home’s neutral palette, Gordon added layers of texture “to make everything tell its own story.” The sofa is linen and scattered with cozy throws. Pillows are made from Tibetan lamb’s wool and rabbit hair. The bedroom’s wallpaper is sisal; the library’s metallic. “Texture makes things more interesting,” notes

Gordon. “It breaks up neutrals and gives a cohesive feel without any one thing sticking out too much.” The great room features two pieces of custom furniture, both oversized and both of carved wood. “Everything shrinks in a home with such high ceilings,” says Gordon, “so it was important that pieces be large in scale. And my client loves real, carved wood.” The duo selected the largest top they could find for the live-edge dining table, made of Mexican guanacaste with gilded wood legs. On the opposite side of the great room, the 105-inch custom sideboard lends overall balance to the space, and its gilded wood base connects it to the dining table. Like those two pieces, all of the furniture was chosen specifically for the space. But a few items carry special meaning for client and designer alike. The brown leather chairs that flank the sideboard and the Turkish Sivas rug are from the home of the client’s parents—the source of Gordon’s first project as an interior designer. In fact, Gordon selected those pieces 15 years ago. The third item that carries special connotations of home for the client is the hand-carved wooden screen from India, which belonged to her grandfather’s brother. “My client is of Indian heritage and her husband is Jewish,” says Gordon. “So they come from different traditions and cultural backgrounds. But they balance each other so well. Part of my job is to keep their home balanced in the same way—to give them both what they like and make it feel like home.”

Colors inspired by the ocean make homeowners Christine and Tim—who both grew up near the beach—feel at home. After their youngest child went off to college, they renovated to create comfortable, elegant and welcoming living spaces that reflect them as a couple.

As new members of the empty-nest club, a Nassau County couple wanted to create their dream home, but still ensure that it remained a welcoming space for their two children, now in college, who return for weekends and summers. That meant opening up the interior space, increasing natural light and updating the décor. The homeowners, Christine and Tim, reached out to Safavieh. “The designer we worked with, Karin Krinsky, really listened,” says Christine. “Everything that we said we needed, every last detail, she made sure we got. She never tried to push her own agenda—her focus was always on what we wanted.” One example: The couple wished for comfortable sofas they could relax on in the evenings, whether to read, watch television or chat about their days. “Karin helped us find sofas that are not only comfortable, but beautiful, too,” says Christine. “And despite their light color, those sofas stand up to lots of use, including our miniature schnauzer.” Because of its central location for Christine and Tim’s large, close-knit extended family, the home serves as a gathering place. “We spend a lot of time all of us here together,” says Christine, “including Sunday dinners and celebrations like birthdays. Our dining room is usually full of people, love, laughter and lots of Italian food.” In short, having the redesign be family-friendly was a priority. Everything had to be comfortable and

Mirrored and metallic surfaces reflect the abundant natural light and add a little sparkle throughout the renovated spaces. The display cabinet, seen in the photo above, houses Lladró ceramic figurines, which Christine has been collecting for more than 28 years. “From the time we were engaged to when the children were born and through today, every piece has a wonderful story attached,” she says. As wine enthusiasts, Christine and Tim enjoy having a space dedicated to conversation and to tasting wines from their extensive collection (above). able to stand up to daily use. “To make sure everyone feels at home,” says Christine, “I wanted to incorporate some family heirlooms—things that would be familiar to all of us—into the new design. Karin helped me go through what we had, and she incorporated what we wanted to re-use into her plan.” A treasured photograph from her parents’ home—two Adirondack chairs facing the ocean—sits atop a display cabinet in the family room. “Karin thought it would look great there. She researched the photographer and was able to get a beach photo by the same artist that’s now displayed near the first. My Dad is so happy to see their photo in our family room.” It was easy for Christine and Tim, high-school sweethearts who both grew up around the beach, to choose a palette: soft, neutral colors accented by shades of blue. “I love the ocean and the outdoors, but I also like a little glitz and sparkle,” says Christine. “Karin added subtle touches to give me that, like crystal drop beads on the window shades, and the wallpaper in the dining room. If you look closely at the flowers on it, they have a little shimmer.” The design also incorporates mirrors and metallic surfaces, including brushed nickel and brass, through all the rooms. “We’re completely happy with our redesign,” says Christine. “To the point that one day last winter, I just had to pick up the phone to thank Karin. I told her, ‘You’ve brought me so much peace in this home. I feel so happy in every room.’” S A FA V I E H s t y l e

boring. Combine different styles of furniture made of different materials for the same curated look as in your living room. Wicker seating and low metal tables, for example, look fantastic together. 4. Finish the floor. If you’re furnishing a covered porch, treat the floor as you would an indoor space: Use all-weather rugs to define seating areas and add a polished appearance. Today’s indoor-outdoor rugs are even appropriate for use on open patios and decks, where rugs provide good looks, slip protection and bare-footed comfort. 5. Fire it up. Whether on a porch or as a freestanding patio feature, an outdoor fireplace provides the same dramatic focal point as an indoor hearth, and it extends the outdoor living season deep into fall or even winter. In open areas, a fire pit admirably serves the same purpose. Tall, gas-fired heaters, as you’ve seen at outdoor cafes, are a less expensive alternative. 6. Ensure evening ambiance. There’s magic to being outside after sunset. As in your indoor living spaces, soft lighting is key to creating a relaxing nighttime environment. Few people have enough sources of lighting in their rooms, indoors or out. For your porch or patio, consider LED or incandescent lights with dimmer switches, battery-operated candles or lanterns, real candles, old-fashioned gas lanterns (there’s nothing more charming), and landscape lighting that extends the magic into the distance. 7. Favor functionality. The function of today’s outdoor living spaces goes far beyond comfortable seating. Outdoor kitchens, built-in bars with entertainment centers and cabanas for lounging are all part of the current scene. Even if you’re not into lavish entertaining, you’ll appreciate the convenience of a nearby refrigerator stocked with cold drinks. Ready to relax? On a Safavieh shopping trip, designer Marissa Sauer chose a comfortable, chic Bernhardt sofa and mirrored coffee table that reflects the island light. Underfoot, a durable indoor/outdoor sisal rug withstands the elements while a coral lamp with an acrylic base adds interest. Black mosaic tiles from a local tile store form the kitchen backsplash.

It’s not often a New Jersey-based company is asked to work on the interiors of a ground-up build on newly purchased beachfront land in Turks and Caicos. But when the client is local, serendipity is in the cards. Marissa Sauer, owner and lead designer of Design MACS, understood just what the client wanted. “The property itself is unique,” she explains. “It was purchased with the intention of turning it into a luxury vacation rental from the start, so we set out to create a place that was flexible for both individual and group rentals depending on high or low season.” Working hand-in-hand with the builder, Paul Chaplin of NorStar Group, Sauer visited every eight weeks or so to check on the progress. What resulted was Villa Viatu—two luxurious open-concept duplexes just steps away from Pelican Bay Beach on the island of Providenciales, with breathtaking views of the ocean. Each duplex floor consists of one two-bedroom suite with en-suite bathrooms and an adjacent studio suite—all with fully equipped kitchens, dining areas and living

areas. The ground-floor living areas open up to the pool (complete with a heated spa and plentiful chaise lounges), while the upper floors enjoy a spacious balcony for al fresco dining and breezy nights. Since the island lacked in furniture stores despite shining in natural beauty, Sauer decided to simplify the process and outfitted the interiors almost fully with furniture from Safavieh’s Paramus, N.J., store. With help from Safavieh designer Michelle Townsend, who Sauer described as knowing the many available collections “like the back of her hands,” the process was pretty seamless. While each suite’s elegant yet beachperfect furniture mostly keeps to the theme, there are subtle differences that give each suite personality— from differing turquoise and aqua hued artworks to ocean-themed accessories, and variously scaled coffee tables and mirrored finishes. The result is an elegant villa that offers the sense of a private resort. An outdoor kitchen, a hammock area, and a newly added fire pit add to the property’s allure. And it’s location on Tranquility Lane? Well that’s just perfect.

PURE ALLURE

The seductive rooms of Mary McDonald command a closer look. Like Coco Chanel before her, Mary McDonald worked as a milliner before she hit it big on her own. She brings to interior design a milliner’s sense of balance, drama, glamour, refined details and bold gestures—all of which have become her hallmarks. While she is strongly influenced by classicism, her rooms are never boring, rarely restrained and always pack some emotional wallop. “Really memorable rooms are seductive,” McDonald says. “They beckon you to

enter and then they embrace you.” She describes seduction as key to her approach. Fair enough, but just what are her tools of seduction? “Well-thought-out ambient lighting for sure,” she answers. “There is nothing worse than going into someone’s home and you feel you are in some sort of surgery center. It’s helpful to mix in accent lighting to artfully accentuate certain elements. I also rely on alluring beds, cozy but curated seating groups, tabouret tables, lush rugs, one major statement piece be it art or chandelier, and of course a little sizzle and glam somewhere. A little bronze or brass can be finishing jewelry touches.” This Californian’s main aesthetic groove might best be described as classically

The graphic painted ceiling, so modern in feel, plays off the gilt sconces, which McDonald designed. Other contrasting pairs: the acrylic coffee table separating painted fauteuils and the expansive chinoiserie screen separating photographs of Moscow’s Ostankino Museum.

elegant, punctuated by the modern. Asked her favorite ways to add a modern touch to a room, she replies: “I think the easiest way to keep your home fresh and current without constant redecorating is, first and foremost, lighting and lampshades. A pair of contemporary lamps or reading lights with a more current shade can really give a room a fresher edge in even the most traditional of settings. I also like to use a very clean and contemporary selection of drinks tables, stools and larger scale table accessories to create the tension between old and new.” That tension is evident in all of the McDonald rooms seen on these pages. Each is composed mainly of traditional elements, which sit in conversation with one or more well-placed contemporary pieces. In the sitting room-cum-bedroom, for example, painted fauteuils flank an acrylic coffee table, while nearby, an oversized contemporary photograph is illuminated by a gilded flame-ball sconce. In her own home, McDonald’s favorite space is her bedroom, seen at left. “I find the space peaceful,” she says. “I have a fireplace I use in the winter and a big picture window that looks out at green treetops in the summer as well as the city view at night. My Chinese Chippendale is just enough Old World glamour to assuage my feminine old school side, while the room is strictly ivory and pale blue—so all very serene and pleasing to just lie around and forget the world.” In real life, McDonald doesn’t spend much time lying around. She has a busy design practice, with client projects underway in multiple states. And she has made her mark as a furniture designer, with an elegant and extensive collection for Chaddock, which you’ll see previewed on the following spread.FGuilty pleasure Besides being a palace for pugs, McDonald’s own bedroom is her favorite place in the house, a quiet refuge where she can “just lie around and forget the world.” The ivory and pale blue color scheme, the fireplace and a sprinkling of Chinese Chippendale all contribute to the air of tranquility.

Mark D. Sikes

An appreciation for the classics and a deft, studied hand yields timeless, California-chic interiors. Mark, how would you describe your design style? Classic, timeless and all-American. You’re known for mastering the feat of melding chic and glamour with comfort and function. What’s your secret? I don’t know if it is a secret, but I try to make sure the rooms I create are both inviting and comfortable. And it is important that the design stands the test of time. The rooms should look and feel just as good 15 years from now as they do today. You appear to gravitate towards color palettes that feature shades of one color. Is this a conscious choice? Not really. I do love color, but I love it in ways that are easy to take in and that do not overwhelm the viewer or the design of the space. What is your favorite designed space? I have so many, it’s hard to choose! I would probably have to go with all of Hubert de Givenchy’s homes. What propelled you to design your own furniture line with Henredon?

I went in with the goal of creating designs that could end up as timeless classics. I was also very inspired by the comfort and ease of California living. Henredon was the perfect partner because of their dedication to a level of quality that will last for generations to come. If you had to pick a design from your Henredon collection that you are most proud of, which would it be and why? If I had to pick a few, I would choose all the designs made with natural fibers. The rattan, cane and rush pieces add so much texture and really help define a curated California style.

the moment I do, someone creates something that flips my viewpoint on its side. The right designer can pull off decorating trends that are not easily used and make them timeless. For example, Albert Hadley often used chintz in a time when it was really out of fashion. Because the rest of the space was understated, his interiors didn’t feel overly decorated and staid—they felt modern and appropriate.

You debuted a new book this past fall, Beautiful, All American Decorating and Timeless Style. Tell us about it! It’s simply a collection of all the beautiful things that inspire my work—organized by color, story, and style.

What do you think a home should embody? A home should be two things: comfortable and beautiful. It should also reflect the personality of the people who live there. The first thing I do when I meet with a new client is to really understand how they live—their home should align with the things they value in life.

Is there a decorating trend you would like to see relegated to the past? I don’t like to dismiss trends because

If you could design a home anywhere, where would it be and what would it look like? I am partial to the hills of Montecito.

I would love to have a house situated on a point that overlooks the Pacific. I would have a garden where I could sit and look over the blues of the ocean and sky. I have lived all over the U.S., but California is where I will always stay. What words of design wisdom will you leave our readers with? Always ‘Make it Beautiful.’
