SANDY MURPHY.
Art Department led by the experienced You would think the best person to head an art department in a store would be an artist. Right? That’s exactly what Paper Plus Masterton has with Sandy Murphy, who is not only a successful artist, but she has a huge art knowledge she’s willing and eager to share with curious customers. You know – the brushes, paints, pencils, pens, canvas, paper types. Sandy explains that Paper Plus owners, Warwick and Sarah Delmonte wanted each of the store’s departments to be headed by knowledgeable people. Customers know when they come in with questions, they will get quality help. When Sandy joined Paper Plus, she was thrilled to take over the art section – and expand it. From a handful of felt pens and notepads, the current display of art equipment would be impressive in any gallery, or to the most accomplished artist. “We wanted to offer all ranges of art equipment encouraging people to dip into their artistic side. We want
to nurture that,” says Sandy. “Covid has given us time and permission to investigate our own talent and I am seeing this in the people coming in to buy art stuff.” She still has the felt pens, coloured pencils, and notepads but there’s also an extensive range of quality acrylic and oil paints, a vast range of paint brushes, and the paper choice is legendary. “Once you get into your art, the last thing you want is for the materials you use to let you down. It can easily put you off and so buying quality is vital.” Sandy especially enjoys selling to the ‘grandparent market’ – guiding them to encourage grandchildren to be artistic. Sandy qualified with a Diploma in Visual Arts from UCOL in Masterton in 2002 and has continued learning from local artists like Jane Sinclair and Sandy’s aunt, Mavis Newland. Sandy enjoys working in oils, but watercolours are her favourite. She also loves talking about the art world – call in have a chat. You’ll be amazed what you learn.
Liv ing in constant pain is no fun. Wairarapa physiotherapist J ulianne O’Donnell is the first to agree, having experienced it herself. However, she is adamant people don’t have to suffer as learning manag ement tools and/ or exercises can be a path to a pain- free life. “ Pain is stealing people’s liv es and it doesn’t have to be this way,” she says. With ov er 3 0 years physiotherapy experience, Julianne teaches people to care for their bodies. She doesn’t promise to remov e the pain altog ether but aims to assist in changing a tudes, helping clients understand their bodies, and teach them productive ways to deal with pain. “Medication certainly helps, but there are tools like pain education, effective distraction, and relaxation techniques, which help g reatly. E xercise is v ital as then the body produces its own endorphins, which are one of the strongest pain reliefs out.” J ulianne runs Pain Manag ement Wairarapa from her clinic in B oundary Road, Masterton. With her is fellow physiotherapist, Judy rown, and the two women offer a fully equipped g ymnasium for on- the- spot exercise. It’s a quiet, intimate space where
clients can exercise under a g uiding eye. Research shows one in five New Z ealanders liv e with persistent pain and J ulianne says it is increasing in prevalence with our ageing population. She shares scary statistics that women ov er 5 0 years hav e lost 3 0 per cent of their muscle mass and by years, it’s down to per cent. “As we age, it is harder to recov er from injury and so we need to keep our strength up,” Sport injuries, car accidents, back and neck problems, arthritis, and migraines are all major causes of both acute and persistent pain. There are just two dedicated pain clinics in New ealand – Auckland and Christchurch. Wairarapa is lucky to hav e Pain Manag ement in its midst. J ulianne says allied with the physiotherapy she offers, she likes to get to know her clients, understand their liv es and teach them about the nerv e and muscular system. I t helps people learning to cope with injury and their pain. Depending on the type of pain, it can sometimes take just one session with J ulianne to establish a ‘ life plan’ and to learn self help techniques. Julianne is a licensed ACC practitioner and can order x- rays and ultrasounds. So, if you have an underlying pain issue which is ruining your enjoyment of life – Julianne is the one to call on.
