Ecological Economics Research School for People, Environment and Planning Summer Positions Several opportunities are available for students to work on ecological economics research projects. A strong background in economics is required, although students from other backgrounds such as resource and environmental planning would be considered1. We are looking for students who have excellent academic records preferably with some evidence of completing successful research projects. It is expected that these students will be entering their final year of undergraduate study in 2013, or are postgraduate students. We are particularly interested in students that have good quantitative skills, but also have the ability to conceptually interpret data and draw conclusions from it. Strong writing skills are very important. Specifically the research projects include: • Assist in research on economic analysis of the Tauranga economy and its interactions with the biophysical environment. • Assist in the economic analysis of coastal and marine restoration projects, plans and programmes. • Assist in research on the economic value of coastal and marine ecosystem services in our study locales: Tauranga, Nelson and the Horowhenua coast. • Written commentaries of sectoral trends in the New Zealand economy and the Bay of Plenty regional economy. • Literature reviews relating to ecosystem services, life-cycle assessment and other ecological economics topics. Students will be assigned to at least one of these specific projects based on their backgrounds and competencies. This is a good opportunity for students to gain practical experience in applied ecological economics research and it may be possible for this work to be the basis for a research thesis or research project in their degree programmes. Remuneration is set by the School’s policy that reflects the students qualifications and experience. These intern positions run from November 2012 to late-February 2013, with the possibility part-time continuing work during the 2013 academic year. Enquiries/applications/expressions of interest by 20 October 2012 (or earlier) to: Derrylea Hardy (Ph: 3569099, ext 2620, Email:D.J.Hardy@massey.ac.nz) Professor Murray Patterson (Ph:3569099, ext.7235, Email: m.g.patterson@massey.ac.nz) 1

BRP students with A- or better pass in Policy Analysis (132.213) and/or Advanced Planning Techniques (132.313) will be considered.
