Generous of spirit, instinctively inquisitive and tirelessly creative. This is just one perspective of the Welsh nation as exemplified by its visual arts community. One perspective from a country that might offer you as many alternatives as its three million inhabitants.
Un adnodd na ellid ei wadu yw cyfoeth ein palet diwylliannol parhaus. Caiff hwn ei ddathlu a’i archwilio yn flynyddol yn yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol, gwˆ yl beripatetig sy’n denu cynulleidfaoedd amrywiol ac yn cyflwyno’r Lle Celf. A mutual resource that few would deny is the richness of our enduring cultural palette. A celebration and exploration of this takes place annually at the National Eisteddfod, a peripatetic festival that draws a shifting audience and which presents Lle Celf (literally Art Place). This is an extensive and eclectic exhibition that provides an opportunity to proclaim and dispute the measure of the visual arts in Wales each and every year.

international collaboration and interaction that persists year round. From fleeting exchanges at opulent international events to long-term partnerships that bond remote centres of creative practice, artists and producers from Wales approach all with personal commitment and professional generosity. The multiplicity of practice and the creative multiplicity of roles undertaken is a telling characteristic of the sector in Wales and, together with a strong sense of place, helps drive our creative momentum. Artists turn producers turn curators turn administrators. This multiplicity isn’t for everyone, but for those that have the energy and vision it can manifest happenings of such clarity as the site responsive inter-disciplinary project En Residencia, conceived and curated by Marc Rees and commissioned by Laboral, Ciudad de la Cultura in Asturias; or initiatives that are as enabling as Chris Brown’s and Anthony Shapland’s contemporary temporary artspace g39. Those with technological facility can benefit from prolonged and distant discourse that can impact on any number of participatory locales, such as Emma Posey’s Getping on-line ideas generator, or Simon Whitehead’s Ping partnership. Transient or long haul, we’re good at forging connections and know the value of our partners. I trust that the snapshot presented in this publication engages you with our Lle Celf.

Mae Canolfan Gelfyddydau Aberystwyth hefyd yn trefnu rhaglen flynyddol lawn o breswyliadau i artistiaid – i ymarferwyr o’r DU a phob rhan o’r byd – gyda’r artistiaid yn gweithio mewn unedau creadigol newydd a ddyluniwyd gan yr arobryn Thomas Heatherwick. Aberystwyth Arts Centre is a contemporary arts complex that includes two galleries and an artists’ film viewing room alongside a theatre, cinema, concert hall, dance studios and artists’ studios. The Centre works with artists to present a wide range of current practice and exhibitions are supported by an active educational programme. The Centre also holds the biennial International Ceramics Festival and displays the University’s extensive international studio ceramics collection. Recent exhibitions have included the provocative work of Miranda Whall, Ellie Rees’ video work, Sandy Brown ceramics, Jordan Baseman filmed work, William Kentridge film pieces, Lubaina Himid’s evocative paintings and films by Chinese artists Cao Mengqin, Yang Jian and Yang Zhifei. The vitality of photographic work in Wales has been evidenced through exhibitions of work by David Hurn, Sue Packer, Rhodri Jones and James Morris’s reflective imagery in the 2010 exhibition A Landscape of Wales.

Aberystwyth Arts Centre also organises a year round programme of artists’ residencies for both UK and international practitioners, with artists based in the new creative units designed by award-winning Thomas Heatherwick. Artists Haider Ali from Pakistan, Jean Yves Vigneau and Michel Huneault from Québec, and Riikka Makikoskel of Finland have recently undertaken residencies. The residency programme is approached with a real sense of collaboration, enabling relationships between the Centre and the artists in residence to grow and be sustained. The Centre is actively open to developing new international partnerships and conversations.

Artes Mundi identifies and supports contemporary visual artists whose work engages with social reality, lived experience and the human condition. Every two years Artes Mundi makes an open call for nominations of artists from anywhere in the world and invites two international curators to make a selection of artists for the thematic exhibition in Cardiff. The process concludes with the awarding of the Artes Mundi Prize which, at £40,000, is one of the world’s largest international visual arts prizes.

bloc is a Wales based hub of international creators, producers, makers and thinkers. The organisation devises and produces commissions and festivals to challenge and investigate creative technology. Through its projects, bloc brings together individuals with a range of skills to create, talk, doubt, rethink and imagine use of technology and to reflect upon this within the specific culture and environment of Wales. Participation is key and communication technologies enable global contributions to local bloc projects. Performing Pixels, conducted from Scala Cinema and Arts Centre in north Wales, brought together technologists and creatives from North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia to celebrate digital practice across film, interaction and performance. A range of disciplines was explored via a diversity of communication means, all in real time. Recognising the need for idea development and exchange has recently been reinforced for bloc creative technologists Emma Posey, Stefhan Caddick, Paul Granjon and Peter Hathaway through research visits and project participation in Kenya and Ghana. Maker Faire Africa celebrates ingenuity and bloc collaborated with African creatives to develop various inventive solutions, from solid-fuel stoves and water pumps to blackboard journalism.

Chapter is one of Europe’s largest multiartform venues with cinemas, theatres, exhibition spaces, a café, a bar and over fifty studios. The centre has more than 1,500 visitors a day and is an unique social space in Cardiff.

Chapter Gallery has a reputation for innovation, internationalism and excellence with emphasis on commissioning new work, developing artists’ residencies, touring, publishing and creating fora for critical reflection via a dynamic programme of talks, events, professional development and educational activity.

Exhibitions in the gallery range from the first UK show for established international artists, to large thematic group shows, to major solo presentations for established artists from Wales including, for example, Anthony Shapland, S Mark Gubb and Sean Edwards. Beyond the main venue projects are increasingly developed off-site, such as Hassan Hajjaj’s off-site work as part of Chapter’s Social Spaces Programme, and often in collaboration with national and international partners. Recent commissions have included Luna Park by Heather & Ivan Morison, touring the UK, and a group exhibition of artists from Wales at CAC in Vilnius, which included Bedwyr Williams and Tim Davies.

Artists are not static. Their practice moves, relocates, realigns, transforms. Their interests shift. Artists are naturally social, they feel comfortable and validated when in the company of other artists. They readily develop allegiances (and animosities). They seek new groupings. Their creative impulse is an endeavour to exceed the threshold of our collective experience. Nations are also not static. Some flow freely into one another, others arrive uninvited. Their tendency to cooperate waxes and wanes. Their beliefs alter, trusts and mistrusts are made. Their borders move and their names change. The things they hold up with pride may later disappear. Languages bleed into one another and dominate, others are crowded out. Somewhere within this process exists a nation’s visual culture. It is inherent in that process, and the nation of Wales in particular testifies that. Culture has been at the heart of daily life for generations of people in Wales, and today’s artists continue to clarify for us what it means to be of this place. They focus and amplify the landscape (rural and urban) and our human condition. Often working outside the support of traditional institutions, they create legacy partnerships at home and afield. Artists are our cultural diplomats. With their portrayals of their nations’ experience they transgress language, borders, mistrusts, beliefs; they fasttrack to a place beyond our cultural experience. They can promote a world view and tolerance. To stifle this movement is perilous.

DASH-Art has the primary intent of developing new and innovative ways of engaging artists and audiences. Its aim is to utilise digital technologies to interconnect artists and audiences and to create real-time multimedia content for associated mobile platforms. The initiative has evolved from the antecedent ICAW Harlech Biennale which has been curating events and enabling international dialogue since 1994, inviting artists from worldwide to bring their practices to rural north Wales. The growing desire for a diminished carbon footprint gave rise to the idea that works can be constructed by a process that is reductive or subtractive in nature. DASH-Art’s current project,

Absence/Substance posits the possibility that precious, often transient things are embedded in our consciousness and are ephemeral or ideological rather than material. The project uses Skype as a democratising technology that enables the viewer to be transported by the internet real-time to locations across Europe and beyond. Artists John Brown and Neil Powell are leading project development.

The collaboration that generated Condition Report illustrates this. Artists Helen Sear and Ken Grant, from the European Centre of Photographic Research at University of Wales Newport, encouraged Ffotogallery to partner with FAMU, the national art academy in Prague. The ensuing dialogue explored the influences of globalisation and how cultural movements may be shared across countries, but also the particular narratives and sensibilities in the new photographic work exhibited in Condition Report that are distinctive to people and place.

Another of Ffotogallery’s recent commissions and exhibitions, The Silent Village, crosses generations, countries, artforms and histories. Artists Peter Finnemore and Paolo Ventura collaborated with writer Rachel Trezise to reflect and respond to the original 1943 short film made in Wales that memorialised the atrocities wreaked upon a small Czechoslovakian village. The contemporary artists reconstructed the film, its references and allusions, drawing reconnections across time.

Vision On comprised an extensive season of activities that celebrated the creative use of digital technology. Initiated by Ffotogallery, Vision On invited contributors from afar to explore digital potential through presentations, installations, workshops and interventions. Gallery space became laboratory space, observation became interaction, and experimentation generated such boundary breaking ideas as Jamie Thomas’s motiontracking programme The Karman Cube. The online channel Switchboard captured live Vision On happenings and data.

g39 is a dynamic artist-led organisation, Cardiff based with national reach. Part gallery, part community and part resource, it is a welcoming space for audiences to experience a selection of Wales’ most exciting and relevant contemporary art. Despite its small size, the public space has become an integral component of the UK artist-led scene, and is a hub for the country’s creative community as well as a direct line for audiences to access Cardiff’s cultural scene. g39 often works in collaboration with other galleries across the world to show Welsh artists abroad, as well as hosting co-curated exhibitions from other nations including Canada, Québec, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, France and Estonia. Many of g39’s artists are gaining significant international reputations, artists such as Bedwyr Williams, Jennie Savage, Nadia Hebson, Richard Bevan, Awst & Walther, James Richards and Sean Edwards. From its inception, g39 has consistently commissioned and presented innovative and challenging work to broad ranging audiences; to date, g39 has shown the work of nearly 700 artists to over 70,000 visitors. The organisation sees its role as a bridge between the artist and the public, and a key component of the curatorial rationale is bringing contemporary work into wider view. Its activity is recognised for the influential furrow it ploughs in the flourishing cultural networks of Wales and the UK. g39 is valued as a major supporter and enabler of emerging visual artists in Wales, it undertakes significant work in providing information and advice, in 2008 establishing WARP – Wales Artist Resource Programme.

Glynn Vivian Art Gallery has, for many years, developed its international networks and welcomed cross cultural collaboration. From an historical perspective the relationship between local and global has always been at the heart of the gallery’s activities, this can be seen in Richard Glynn Vivian’s diverse collection of paintings and ceramics, his gift to the city of Swansea in 1911. Glynn Vivian Art Gallery sees itself as a local gallery in an international context and, as such, shows work from Wales, UK and elsewhere. Recent international projects have included Shimabuku’s Swansea Jack Memorial Dog Swimming Competition and Displaced, Contemporary Art from Colombia that included the work of Oscar Munoz, Humberto Junca, José Alexandra

Restrepo, Maria Elvira Escallon, Miguel Angel Rojas and Nadin Ospina, amongst others. The exhibition was co-curated by Karen MacKinnon of Glynn Vivian Art Gallery with Maria Clara Bernal, a curator and academic from Bogota. The Gallery is working on a number of new international initiatives including a collaboration with artists from China and from Wales, Tim Davies, Paul Emmanuel, Owen Griffiths, Zeng Huanguang, Maleonn Ma and Fern Thomas in Lets See What Happens…. The Gallery is also working on a project with Amsterdam based artist Maria Pask. Both projects culminating in exhibitions and publications in 2012/13. The international programming is very much about collaboration, developing lasting networks and meaningful dialogues between artists, across different cultures and time zones. The programme, and development of it, creates conversations that relate to particular place and locality in an international context.

People tend to read far too much into the surroundings they confront, it’s human. A reader like me, armed with a tourist’s eye and post-colonial background, always looks for the reflection of his own past. Wales is an easily legible landscape in this regard, temptingly. It encourages narrations of both difference and dissidence. A net of stories covers the hills, valleys and shores as a smooth velvet film. Not that explicit, not that articulated, it is still always presumed, taken for granted as a grounding framework of daily discourse. Presumption of dissidence. It sets the tone of conversation. And the tone is blueish. A specific sense of humour grows in Wales, one of fading protectionist attitudes returning in the guise of artistic actions loaded with a sense of absurdity; competing articulations of one’s identity and self-reflection. A certain introvert soul searching is evident, but tempered with irony, laid back in a mellow afternoon. One has to let go to live on, people in my country are having hard times learning this. Hostages of the past, they still look for justice for bygones. But Wales compromises these clashes through art in a most productive way. The lesson to be learned.

HG Gallery is situated on the main campus of Cardiff School of Art and Design, its programme reflects the multidisciplinary nature of the college course structure. HG Gallery actively reaches out to audiences locally, nationally and internationally as well as serving the staff and student population. The Wales Rajasthan Exchange exhibition seen at HG Gallery during Spring 2011 showcased the work of ten visual artists from India together with eight from the college – Annie Giles Hobbs, Sue Hunt, Tom Piper, Chris Lloyd, Richard Cox, David Ferry, Bill Chambers, Tom Martin – who are mostly members of V-6. V-6 is a group of printmakers who have toured work to the USA, Australia and India. The opening exhibition took place at Jawahar Kala Kendra, International Arts Centre in Jaipur, the second biggest Arts centre in Asia. 2011 tour venues also include galleries in New Delhi, Deradun and Chandigarh. LOCWS International is an artist led organisation that works with UK based and international artists to create temporary visual art projects for public and accessible spaces across the City of Swansea in South Wales.

May You Live in Interesting Times: Festival of Creative Technology, Cardiff was launched in 2005 and is a major event developed in partnership between bloc: Creative Technology Wales and Chapter. The 2009 festival featured more than forty events across three days including a number of international commissions, residencies and exhibitions.

Based in Cardiff, Mermaid and Monster represents a number of artists from across the UK but with a focus to develop opportunities for artists from Wales through selling in the international art market. Initiated in 2007 by artist/curator Gordon Dalton along with artist Richard Higlett, Mermaid and Monster’s team became three in 2010 with Arts consultant Emma Price joining the project. Mermaid and Monster’s main focus is promoting the work of emerging and established contemporary artists at international art fairs, such as Art Basel and Scope Miami. Other activities include curated projects, editions, professional development initiatives and advocacy on the international stage of contemporary art created in Wales. Most recently, in late 2010, Mermaid and Monster was invited to present at the Manchester Contemporary Art Fair, exhibiting established artists such as Helen Sear, Anthony Shapland and Neal Rock alongside emerging artists such as Alistair Owen and Lauren Jury.

A vibrant cornerstone of contemporary visual art in Wales, Mostyn’s recent expansion beautifully integrates the original 1901 galleries (the first in the world built to show the work of women artists) with strikingly designed new areas. The award-winning architecture provides a stunning space for the enjoyment of art and for socialising. It is also the platform for the gallery’s artistic vision, one driven by a belief in excellence, creativity, imaginativeness, the distinctive voice, original thought, seriousness about the human condition and the accessibility of art based on the diverse yet shared nature of human experience. Mostyn is a showcase for some of the best art being produced in Wales and for important art being made elsewhere in the world. It organises solo exhibitions by Welsh artists at key stages of their careers and group exhibitions of particular interest to Wales. The major reopening show for Mostyn, We Have the Mirrors, We Have the Plans, was a diverse and stimulating group show of work by twenty five artists and artist partnerships that probed and celebrated contemporary art currently being made in Wales. Uniquely in the UK, Mostyn regularly shows leading contemporary artists from Africa. …and nowhere is this more true than in Wales. Constitutionally, it has little more autonomy than a federal state and strives against the dominance of Anglo-American influences. Regardless of the huge industrial upheavals of its past, that re-sculpted the landscape and syphoned it’s riches, the people of Wales, with an almost siege mentality, have had to invent and re-invent themselves time after time, and are still doing so today with the best means they know, culture.

Our singers, actors and writers are world renowned and, with continued state support and inclusion at international events, the visual artists in Wales are burgeoning. But is there such a thing as Welsh Visual Art? I don’t know… but a minority culture’s continual fight against extinction is a powerful and creative force. This seems to permeate through the arts in Wales, setting it slightly apart from its immediate neighbour, and driving the work to be internationally pertinent. Indigenous to Wales or not, this infectious will to survive is common in all who work tirelessly within the current visual arts family of Wales. If that’s what defines Welsh Visual Art, I may be closer to the answer. So if a nation is not defined by geography alone, but by its people’s response to what the world throws at them, those individuals visually reinventing and re-creating Wales today certainly deserve an opportunity to be featured at global visual arts events such as The Venice Biennale.

From July 2011, Wales has its own National Museum of Art. Completely refurbished spaces are complemented by six impressive new galleries at National Museum Cardiff. The National Museum’s extraordinary mix of fine and applied art, from 1500 to the present day, can be shown for the first time in a single series of integrated galleries. The National Museum has worked on a range of international initiatives. It has played a part in establishing Wales’ presence at the Venice Biennale and hosts the international Artes Mundi exhibition and prize. It has developed international touring, most prominently in the hugely successful tour in the USA of Turner to Cezanne: masterpieces from the Davies Collection and recently hosted a show of carvings from the remarkable Dazu world heritage site in China. Major new acquisitions include works by Eija Liisa Ahtila, Dias and Riedweg, Lida Abdul and Berni Searle, all shown at Artes Mundi exhibitions, as well as works from Wales’ Venice projects by Paul Seawright, Peter Finnemore and Merlin James. These are alongside historic and contemporary acquisitions from Francesco Guardi to James Turrell. The new gallery space opens with a major themed display from the collection. International work is featured alongside work from Wales, from Josef Herman to Bedwyr Williams, from Francis Bacon to Richard Long. John Cale’s Dyddiau Du/Dark Days, first shown in Wales 2009 Venice Biennale exhibition, is also programmed for the new gallery.

Growing from an itinerant collective of artists working in interdisciplinary practices in rural west Wales are events and projects that relate explicitly to the immediate locale but that connect with an ever-expanding glocale. Artist led collective ointment has generated opportunities for live art practice in the region, initiating and producing events, exchanges and residencies that explore unique responses to environmental and rural change in conversation with other contributing artists and with audiences.

Close collaborative exploration with Quebecois collective Boréal Art/Nature instigated intimate encounters with diverse wildernesses in the Crwydro / Marcheurs des bois exchange. Over-wintering swallows at a west Wales oil refinery became the focus for a collaborative response by workers and ornithologists, a live artist and musician in ointment’s Milford Swallows project, 2009. A founding member of ointment, movement artist Simon Whitehead continues a sustained collaboration that precedes ointment and which is illustrative of the motivation that has helped to shape ointment’s approach. Pings engages with the geographical distance between Simon Whitehead, based in Abercych in west Wales, and sound artist Barnaby Oliver who is living in Melbourne, Australia. The artists explore the physical space between them through water, land and air and engage with each other through various channels, including the web, phone, post and the less tangible links of memory and synchronicity.

In January 2008 they began an exchange of performance material as a means of mapping their respective locales, often working simultaneously from nearby rivers. Although a few thousand miles apart they shared the intention to ‘meet’ at a particular time each week by approaching their rivers as an unbroken body of water through which they would correspond. Through improvisational approaches they have been building a cumulative body of material from these meetings. This material (including video, sound and image) begins to create its own character, responsive to season, time of day, level of water and the meandering presence of each artist.

A key venue, Oriel Davies originates exhibitions of innovative contemporary art from Wales, other parts of the UK and internationally. In 2010 Oriel Davies collaborated with ArtSway and Autograph ABP, commissioning lens-based artist Dave Lewis to make Field Work. The partnership continued in 2011, to support Dave Lewis to make new work for the New Forest Pavilion, 54th International Art Exhibition, Venice Biennale. Oriel Davies’ planned programme includes Oriel Factory, a major show of new work by Paul Granjon. French artist Paul Granjon has been based in Cardiff for over fifteen years and, together with Laura Ford and Peter Finnemore, represented Wales at the 51st Venice Biennale of Art, 2005. He describes his practice as ‘the co-evolution of humans and machines,’ creating robots, automata, musical instruments and performances to explore our relationship with technology. For Oriel Factory, Granjon works with volunteers to recycle redundant technological and electronic waste, constructing a gamut of extraordinary new robotic contraptions.

Oriel Davies has invited Six Artists from Denmark to Wales – Hartmut Stockter, Marianne Jorgensen, Jette Ellgaard, Klavs Weiss, Karen Havskov Jensen and Thomas Wolsing. Three of the artists live and work in Vestjyland, a land of sand dunes, marshland, small villages and wind farms. Working in film, installation, land art and textiles, the artists take a sideways look at rurality, from the depopulation and economic demise of Vestjyland through to tongue-in-cheek attempts to capture the pastoral idyll. The opening day of the exhibition sees an outdoor performance by Wales-based artist Tom Gilhespy of his Kettle Choir, first performed in Vestjyland in 2010.

Since opening its doors in June 2000 in a converted former Victorian laundry, tactileBOSCH Gallery and Studios in Cardiff has become a key exponent of experimental work and a catalyst in developing the practice of numerous emerging artists.

Instigated by performance artist Simon Mitchell and photographer Kim Fielding, tactileBOSCH is spread over three buildings. The enduring vision of tactileBOSCH has been to enable a selection of established international artists to visit the Welsh capital to create and perform work, as well as to provide a platform for both emerging and established local artists to explore and to showcase their practices. As an alternative gallery space, tactileBOSCH is adaptable, almost chameleonic, in nature. The naturally lit space transforms according to the character of each show and enforces no parameters on the placement of work, giving the artists the opportunity to exhibit and experiment in a way that is not always possible in other public spaces. This capacity for transformation provides a living environment, capable of producing an innovative dialogue between artist, curator, space and audience.

With a gallery space in the front room of a terrace house, TRACE has produced a programme of performance and time-based work since 2000. Each project, many by visiting international artists, has involved an installation component, or trace. The performances effectively alter the space over a set duration in order that the trace of the artists’ activity has a longer life. These discrete traces have accumulated into a living archive centred on process, events and experiences.

Since 2008 the group of Wales based performance artists that evolved as TRACE has focused on creating collective collaborations and external contextual projects. As a group now defining themselves as a collective, TRACE Collective, they have identified an investigation that reflects the discourse arising from work presented by artists at TRACE. Anchoring this speculative investigation in the specific, the ongoing project TRACE:Displaced has seen members of the collective effectively relocate TRACE both physically and conceptually, transplanting a 1:1 scale architectural replica of the gallery space into a new situation within which to undertake a range of performance enquiries and actions, also involving guest artists. Four main

performance install-actions have taken place at four locations; inside the Tramway during the National Review of Live Art in Glasgow 2008, outdoors at the National Eisteddfod of Wales 2008, outdoors at Coed Hills Rural Artspace in south Wales 2009 and at Artspace in Sydney, Australia 2009. TRACE Collective has also produced performance archival projects in Glasgow at the National Review of Live Art in 2010 and is planning future projects in Berlin and Patagonia. A characteristic of performance artists is their collective networks and social interactions. This results in organisational work and collective projects that place emphasis on the advance of artistic practice through the dynamics of group interaction. TRACE Install-action artspace and TRACE Collective can claim to be part of this ongoing process.
