rosy FEELING

From punchy pinks to crimson reds, rosy tones are making their mark as go-to statement shades that work all year round. Often seen as seasonal, the pink and fuchsia hues that were the stars of 2022 have made their way into the home as more permanent fixtures, adding bursts of energy to interiors and complementing the maximalist trend in home decor. These feel good shades have the staying power to take us beyond spring and summer, while also igniting demand for more rich tones within this vibrant colour family.

Crimson influenced shades, like Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year - Viva Magenta, highlight the versatility and joyful presence blushing shades bring to our homes. Described by the Pantone Color Institute™ as “a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength”, Viva Magenta makes a captivating case for becoming the must-have colour for interior spaces this year.

Introducing these all-eyes-on-me shades into your home can feel a little daunting, but with some planning, the final look is sure to be the stylish update you never knew you needed. With spring just around the corner, this is the perfect time to bring life to a bare wall with a fresh coat of magenta-inspired paint or wall-paper feature – adding a statement sofa or accent chairs in this colour palette will also enhance the la vie en rose energy in your home. If you’re not ready to make a big investment, try swapping your pillows and throws for a new set that feature these energetic shades. And, don’t forget to complete your style edit with decorative accessories in similar tones (a vase filled with vibrant pink and crimson blooms is highly recommended).

wanderlust lifestyle

When I am designing living spaces, I always want to ensure they not only look great but also are comfortable, inviting, and really have a mix of furniture styles with a lot of pattern and texture. These are spaces where people spend a lot of quality time entertaining, hanging out and making memories. The goal is to make these spaces look effortless and curated over time.

When I was asked to design a collection for Urban Barn, I was so excited to infuse inspirations from my travels. I have always found that travelling inspires me in so many ways and really influences the way that I design not only my client’s spaces, but my own personal space as well, hence calling the collection Wanderlust. I also knew that I wanted to create pieces that worked together to create a cohesive look but also ones that worked on their own.

I have come to be known for my signature of mixing furniture styles in my interiors and this collection is a true reflection of that. A mix of mid-century, modern, traditional and everything in between is showcased in this collection. From the soft curves in the coffee table bases and chairs, bobbin style legs in the console and bench, the mix of wood tones and the hammered metal finishes there is a showcase of how different styles can work harmoniously.

Travel is life, travel is style. One of Calgary’s most prominent interior designers, Alykhan Velji, takes us on a trip on styling the living room – or any other living space of your home – with his new collaboration with Urban Barn, Wanderlust.

Creating spaces that look like they have been curated overtime is something that is very important to me when it comes to design. I do this with a careful mix of pieces but also introducing patterns and textures so that each space looks layered. The Wanderlust collection is a true labour of love that took almost 2 years to come to life. I couldn’t be happier with the collection and am so excited to see how people incorporate these pieces into their own homes.

The Wanderlust Collection will be available online as of January 19th, 2023, and will officially launch in stores February 17th, 2023. More info at www.UrbanBarn.com

INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS TO WATCH OUT FOR IN 2023

In 2022, the interior design world saw some of the most beautiful trends come through its doors. It brought every shade of green into our homes, we learned (and loved) the term “Organic Modern”, and we have grown to appreciate the finer things when it comes to housewares– linen, handmade pottery, and anything with an old-world artisan touch.

In 2023 I predict that we will see more of these trends that 2022 brought, and so much more. It’s an exciting year filled with beautiful organic textures, color, and drama. Here are 5 Interior Design trends you can expect to see more of in 2023.

A bonus trend! Checkerboard

Checkerboard is a brand new trend coming for 2023. You’ll see checkerboard in art, tile, rugs, throw pillows and blankets. This is one of those trends that comes down the pipes from fashion trends and it’s a great trend to include in small accessories– this is not a trend to invest in. It’s funky and reminds us that sometimes design is really fun!

16 RENO + DECOR |FEBRUARY/MARCH 2023

Dark, moody, rich colour

This is the year for rich colour. We’re seeing brown come back, but it’s not like the brown we knew and eventually grew to loathe back in good old 2006. Think any brown you would see in your favourite morning beverage– chocolate, coffee, mocha. It feels warm, it might feel a little earthy– it’s giving cozy AF. We’re also seeing moody but muted blues, greens, and even some browny-mauves appearing on the colour scene. Thanks to designers like Amber Lewis and Ashley Montgomery–moody, dark, rich colours will be showing up in homes for the next few years. And while the white oak look is still going strong, we will be seeing darker woods with a true brown midtone to dark appearance popping up in furniture, cabinetry, millwork, and other accessories. Dark countertops will be gaining popularity as well such as granite and soapstone.

Statement stone

Towards the end of 2022, we’ve seen stone backsplashes popping up in kitchens everywhere, and you can expect to see this trend to be gaining more and more popularity in 2023 due to its simplistic and organic, yet beautifully minimal nature. Once again, you will see more dark and dramatic colouring in stone like marble and quartzite and even manmade porcelain slab. Along with kitchens and bathrooms, you will also see a resurgence of stone in fireplaces, however the stone will be light in colour, over-grouted and large format–think cozy english cottage.

Emphasis on lighting

In 2023, we will be seeing more of an emphasis placed on lighting and the beauty, function, and atmosphere it can create. Gone are the days where an overhead light is simply flicked on when you walk in a room–people are starting to pay attention to ambient, task, accent and decorative lighting and how all these lighting types work together to create an elevated experience for everyday life. Think under cabinet lighting, art lighting, well placed sconces, and statement chandeliers and pendants.

Organic modern still going strong

Another trend that is coming in hot from the end of 2022 is Organic Modern. Organic Modern is a blend of minimal modern lines, combined with natural elements that promotes a feeling of calm and wellness. You’ll see lots of Biophilic design here as well as lots of emphasis placed on handmade artisan goods with materials such as linen, ceramics, and stone. You’ll also see a mix of both curved and organic lines in this design style, as well as elements that have been trending in previous years such as rustic wood and turkish rugs. This style is expected to stick around for the next few years, and you will see many of these elements popping up in mainstream decor stores.

Emphasis placed on sustainability and timelessness via transitional design

This last one might sound out of place, considering that this is an article about design trends for 2023. However, for the last few years many interior design trends have been leaning hard towards sustainable design. More and more, consumers are looking for products that will stand the test of time both from a durability standpoint and from a design standpoint. Higher quality finishes are sought after such as real wood, stone, and handmade wool rugs. Vintage and antique shopping has seen an uptick and we are seeing DIYers both restore and rethink some of these vintage and antique finds to make them work in their own homes. Homeowners are starting to see the value of finishings and furnishings that will grow and adapt with them as they move through the seasons of their lives– and their desire to both save their hard earned cash in the long run, and keep fast design out of landfills has pushed sustainable and timeless design to the forefront. This is bringing forth a style we may have seen in the last few years but didn’t know the name of and that style is Transitional Design. Transitional design is a mix of old and new, modern and traditional. It’s warm and inviting, a design full of self expression and history, and we can expect to see more of this in the next few years.

Just white Hipstoric HOME TREND

“In 2023, people will embrace the Hipstoric home trend and find new ways to honour beloved stuff in their homes by combining vintage—often inherited— pieces with their modern styles. To bring this trend to life, people should try to mix modern and antique furniture and look for new ways to keep cherished pieces. From repurposing antique windows or furniture to upcycling beloved furniture, this trend is all about making the old new again with a modern twist.”

Viva Magenta

Exuding vim and vigour, Pantone’s colour of the year is Viva Magenta (18-1750), a bold shade from the red family symbolizing joy and strength. When incorporating this shade into your lifestyle, think of pops of magenta in a statement piece of furniture or throw pillows, an oversized sweater or a swipe of magenta on the lips à la ‘90s style.

“In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. Pantone Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known. Rooted in the primordial, Viva Magenta reconnects us to the original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, it galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”

FIRED UP All

Do you want to incorporate a fireplace into your home? A zero-clearance fireplace may be what your space needs. We asked the experts at Regency Fireplace Products to explain the advantages of this type of fireplace

Afireplace can set the tone in a room and provide a beautiful focal point in which to relax and unwind in a cosy atmosphere. It provides instant ambience. Is a fireplace on your wish list this year? One type of fireplace you should consider is a zero-clearance design. The convenience, customization, and flexibility offered by a zero-clearance fireplace are unparallel for many reasons. One of the most significant advantages is that it is a premanufactured metal firebox that is entirely self-contained and insulated, which keeps the outside of the fireplace from getting too hot, protecting the materials surrounding the unit. That means it doesn’t need to be located a distance from combustible materials. But wait, there is more. Consider these four benefits of this type of fireplace.

INSTALLATION

Since a zero-clearance fireplace has greater framing and finishing flexibility, it can be designed to match your room, instead of your room matching the fireplace. In addition, a zero-clearance gas fireplace does not require a chimney or hearth because it utilizes direct-vent technology. The fireplace can simply be vented through an outside wall or roof. This flexibility, combined with a large variety of size options, allows you to add the warmth of a fireplace to a bedroom, living room, den, basement, second storey — just about anywhere in your home.

FINISHINGMATERIALS

Zero-clearance fireplaces allow you to use virtually any finishing material, including wood, wallpaper, and marble, to

cover story | Sponsored Content
26 RENO + DECOR | FEBRUARY/MARCH 2023
Ei29 Electric Fireplace Insert

turn it into the focal point of any room. With zero-clearance fireplaces you can also hang TVs and artwork directly above the fireplace without fear of damage.

CUSTOMIZATION

In addition to the variety of finishing materials available, you will also have many choices in customizing the look of the actual fireplace itself. Multiple options for faceplates, interior panels, and log sets are just a few choices you can make in creating the perfect fireplace look for your home.

EFFICIENCY

Zero-clearance fireplaces have much higher efficiency ratings than traditional open masonry models. Because the system is direct vented, it uses outside air for combustion, keeping the warm air in your home. With old masonry fireplaces, much of the heat produced is lost up the

chimney. The completely sealed firebox of a zero-clearance gas fireplace prevents cold air from entering your home like it would with an open masonry fireplace so, even when the fireplace is not in use, it helps keep more heat into your home and lower heating bills.

If you’d like a zero-clearance fireplace in your home, visit your local Regency dealer. Because every installation is unique, working closely with your dealer can ensure you find the right size unit for your home, while also getting the look you desire. In addition, they will carefully check the location where the fireplace will be installed to ensure all specifications can be met and that venting can be run safely and correctly.

When my glamourous client presented me with the design freedom to create a colourful penthouse in the sky, I jumped at the chance. The 365-degree views of the lake are the perfect backdrop for my canvas of bold blues and saturated pinks. When designing an open-concept space with colourful pieces, it’s important to consider the flow and sightlines in the rooms from various angles, ensuring that the entire colour palette works in harmony.

The custom pink settee that sits like a reigning queen in the entrance gives visitors a sneak peek into the vibrant pops of colour that awaits them as they pass from room to room. The watery hue is echoed in the rich blue custom velvet sofa that forms the basis of this welcoming seating area. I opted for an oversized coffee table that proudly displays a mix of books, candles and my client’s colourful collectables.

Get the look

Add the magic of colour to your home. For some inspiration, here are my top three tricks to achieving a luxurious colourful look in any space.

Use a pattern as the jumping-off colour palette in your room. Art, a rug or accent pillows are the perfect accessories to use as the basis to your vibrant room scheme.

Consider slipcovers as a budget-friendly alternative to colourful custom upholstery.

Incorporate painted furniture pieces to add character and warmth.

Spotlight on spring

It’s not all gloom and doom for 2023 — there is some light to help you get through what is anticipated to be a challenging economic time. We combed through the trend diaries and noticed an overarching theme in mind.

This year is all about celebrating your authenticity and focusing on sustainability, paving the way to establish new connections within the spaces in your home and most importantly, with your loved ones.

Whether you are looking to spend this spring decluttering, choosing to refresh your space or renovating and making major changes, why not plan ahead and enhance your interiors with what we have discovered?

Freedom of expression

Functional maximalism is taking centre stage this spring, allowing you to express yourself fully through colour, texture and

material, all the while helping with your daily rituals. Multisensory touchpoints infused in a space — for example wallpaper, incorporating a bold couch with rich colour schemes, or mixing pieces from the past and present — will be ruling our interiors with a focus on high-low design in the home. It’s a pared-back design, with the classic and the timeless taking a back seat to usher in an era of expressionism and individuality.

Buckle up, spring is fast approaching and with it, the excitement to usher out the old and bring in the new

Furniture fundamentals

It was in 2020 that we began to see a shift in the furniture and decor industry. Manufacturers and designers began to dive deep into recreating furniture collections, blending clean lines, elegant shapes, and materiality, pushing the boundaries of what we have been acustomed to see over the previous years.

In 2023, there has been an upswing, with different eras expressed through modernity. Working with rich velvets, bouclé, hair on hide, mohair and vegan leather, the trends are predicting that this industry is going to continue to shift and elevate in design and functionality, while making these pieces approachable.

We have loved and lived with bleached woods, but we are noticing that designers and manufacturers are veering away from the Scandi influence and beginning to use darker, richer tones. Everything from walnut to black mango wood, wood veneer and rich marble, we are loving all the moody vibes that this trend is giving. All you need is one statement piece that will be the conversation starter at a dinner party or barbecue you will host this spring.

Tantalizing tables

The devil is in the details and yes, our dinnerware, silverware and serving ware will have its moment. Form, uneven organic shapes, rustic textures, and warm woods converted to sculptural serving essentials are all designed with one goal in mind — to intentionally spark some gleam when serving your most coveted foods and recipes. An inexpensive way to refresh your space and decor, this spring’s trends enable you to create a delightful tablescape to reflect the freshness and vibrance of the season and celebrate a new and exciting year ahead.

Cottage life

Designer Rebecca Hay turns a pandemic purchase into a dream destination up north

Sometimes, the best ideas happen when challenges arise. Did you notice during the pandemic that there was a shift in what we wanted out of our homes, jobs, and lives? Faced with lockdowns, isolation and a changing world, many set out to carve a way of living for themselves and their families.

For designer Rebecca Hay’s client, the pandemic gave them the idea to purchase a cottage that would allow them to spend more time together up north, surrounded by nature and a beautiful lake.

Hay was enlisted to completely refresh the dark interiors with minimal construction and maximum decorating. “My

clients are busy working professionals with three young children,” says Hay. “The space needed to be familyfriendly but still have an elevated, comfortable look.”

Hay chose a neutral palette of white with hits of blue and green, echoing the lake and trees surrounding the property. Natural wood details can be found throughout the cottage’s

design, along with stone and brick accents that were part of the cottage’s architecture. “The look feels cottagey but without being too rustic,” says Hay.

The stunning kitchen was refreshed by removing some cabinetry and valances, repainting the remaining cabinets and island, and adding new hardware and window treatments.

“The kitchen is one of my favourite rooms in this cottage. I love that my team and I were able to completely transform the room without a major reno,” says Hay.

37 renoanddecor.com
The space needed to be family-friendly but still have an elevated, comfortable look.

Additionally, Hay saw the opportunity for a bonus space by creating a loft area above the entrance of the cottage, which was previously a two-storey open space. This offered an additional sleeping area for guests and served as the kids’ new playroom/game space.

“I added warm textures with grass cloth material and layered in different textures and colours with blue furnishings, a continuation of the look found throughout the cottage,” says Hay. The loft also includes a nifty

window seat/pullout bed that marries functionality and style. “The window seat is perfect for curling up to read while also serving as an additional bedroom for guests,” explains Hay.

For Hay’s clients, a pandemic idea turned into a purchase of a lifetime.

“My clients were never cottage people, but the pandemic changed that,” says Hay. “Now they have a beautiful oasis up north to enjoy whenever they want.”

Mindful changes for an eco-friendly life in 2023 and beyond

greener A

There is no denying that these days, climate change and the Earth’s well-being are on the minds of many people. So, is it your goal to live greener in 2023? I hear you. While it may seem like a monumental task, implementing small changes around your home can lead to a reduction in landfill

at home
YOU
44 RENO + DECOR | FEBRUARY/MARCH 2023

waste, cleaner air and the preservation of nature. Here are five ways you can start living a greener life.

Eco-friendly renovations

Are you planning a home reno this year? Why not incorporate sustainable touches? For example, flooring options such as bamboo and cork are renewable resources that have less of an impact on the environment compared to hardwood. Energyefficient appliances can help reduce energy waste, lower natural gas and water use while saving your household money. And paint with no or low volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and eco-friendly wallpaper creates less waste while being made, and can cut down on airborne toxins.

Conscious shopping

Thinking twice about purchases enables you to be mindful of what you really need to buy. Being mindful can lead to better purchasing decisions. For instance, with a bit of research (hello, world wide web!) that amazing marble coffee table you’ve been swooning over may be available gently used at a fraction of the price. Buying used items helps reduce carbon emissions and saves on resources such as water and energy. If buying used isn’t an option, then why not buy locally? Supporting small businesses helps keep the community thriving and minimizes carbon emissions, not to mention a more personalized shopping experience as well.

Compost it

There are so many benefits to starting a compost. Not only does it keep food waste from being put in plastic bags that end up in landfills, but adding compost to your soil and yard is rich in organic nutrients, reducing the need for pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Composting can save you money and helps the environment. It’s a win-win!

Pause on plastic

Did you know that one million plastic bags end up in the trash every minute? And that plastic makes up 80 per cent of all marine debris. Shocking, right? There are simple things we can do to reduce our plastic use. Whether you are buying food or shopping for clothing, bring a recyclable tote along. Using a reusable shopping bag can decrease reliance on plastic bag production and protect the environment from plastic pollution. In the kitchen, why not substitute your plastic wrap for beeswax wrap? Beeswax is better for the environment and more breathable than plastic, ensuring your food stays fresher for longer. And, of course, cutting down on plastic bottle use is a must. With a little forethought, having a stainlesssteel reusable bottle with you will cut down on the need to buy plastic when you’re in a pinch.

Upcycle, sell, or donate

Furniture can take up a lot of space in a landfill. Do you have a piece of furniture you want to shift? First, ask yourself, can this piece be upcycled? With a new coat of paint and cool hardware, you can transform a dated piece of furniture into a one-of-a-kind statement piece. If upcycling won’t work, you could sell the piece on accounts such as Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace. And, if selling is a nogo, give a new life to that piece of furniture by donating it to places such as Value Village. Remember, someone’s trash is another person’s treasure.

The numbers behind a well-decorated space

tip:

The ideal gap between seats should be between three ft. and 10 ft., and the gap between the sofa and coffee table should be about 16-in.

Measure by measure

I’m going to let you in on a little design secret. Besides knowledge and a knack for creating stunning spaces, an interior designer uses simple math when decorating. To create a room with that certain je ne sais quoi, interior designers use measurements to ensure a room looks balanced and beautiful. In this article, I

break down four areas where accurate measurements play a role in the overall harmony of a well-decorated interior space.

Lighting

Lighting is important in every room for its function, esthetic and ambience, and when it comes to a ceiling fixture,

the correct proportions are the key to achieving a desired impact. To determine the appropriate size of your ceiling fixture, measure the length and

designer’s eye
48 RENO + DECOR | FEBRUARY/MARCH 2023
Ph ot o : Mike C ha j eck i

width of the room in feet, and add those numbers together. That sum, in inches, represents the ideal diametre of your light fixture. For example, a room that measures 15 ft. by 20 ft. would require a light fixture measuring 35-in. across.

Seating

Seating — and how it is spaced — is a factor in virtually every room in some capacity, but in the living room, it’s everything. The sofa is the

centrepiece of a living room. Standard sofas measure about 84-in.-long and 38-in.-deep, but they can range from 72-in. to 96-in.-long, suited to smaller and larger rooms, respectively. The seat height of most sofas and armchairs is 18-in., so keep this in mind when choosing side tables and a coffee table, which should be about two-thirds the length of your sofa. When positioning your seating, give each piece enough breathing room.

pro-tip

Pay attention to the suspension height of light fixtures. If it hangs above a table or counter, the gap between the bottom of the fixture and the tabletop or countertop should be approximately 30-in. to 36-in. Otherwise, the space between the bottom of a light fixture to the floor should measure between six and seven ft.

Area rugs

A rug forms the base of a furniture grouping, such as a living room sitting area or a dining room suite, so these measurements should be factored into the design plan from the beginning. If a room has one express function, such as a dining room, then the rug should be chosen relative to the size of the room and should accommodate the entire furniture grouping to create a cohesive look. If the area rugs are for a large, open-concept area, sketch out a floorplan and layer in all the individual “zones” that are planned for the space, such as the sitting area, the reading corner, the television area, the office nook, and so on. Adding rugs to these areas acts as a visual anchor and helps define them within a large, open

tip:

It’s best to hang single artwork at eye level, with 60-in. from the centre to the floor being the magic number.

space. Each area rug should be large enough to accommodate the furniture grouping related to that particular area, with about eight inches of rug peeking out from beneath furnishings.

Art

Artwork provides visual interest and dimension to a space. When hanging artwork, consider the size and scale of the piece. I love to place large pieces over a sofa or console and group smaller pieces in corners. If you’re hanging your art above furniture, it can be four to six inches above the piece. If the art is going above a sofa or console, the piece should be approximately two-thirds the width of the furniture. Lastly, think about layering art. This is especially effective in places such as the kitchen, pantry or in a bookshelf vignette.

THE EASE OF French Country design

Good design never goes out of style. It is important to focus in on a style when renovating, redesigning or building your new home and even more important to create a style for your brand for your business as well.

By keeping your interior fit and finishes classic and timeless, and not pushing your design too “trendy”, will assure that your interior design will withstand the test of time.

Paint, wallpaper, artwork, furnishings can easily be changed and are where I like to show the homeowner’s personality. Whereas the “ fit and finishes” tiles, countertops, cabinetry and millwork need to be thoughtful, classic. It is as important to tie in the exterior with the interior - this creates harmony from inside to outside.

56 RENO + DECOR |FEBRUARY/MARCH 2023

In French Country - as shown in these photos - I’ve kept the materials simple, it’s the patterns that are typically complex. Linen, soft hand-made prints, thoughtful millwork details, a mirror in an ornate frame, a vintage rug on a new hardwood floor — all embody a French Country aesthetic. I decided to bring in the darker richer charcoal/black/gray elements which ground the space while keeping it fresh and more modern.

French Country combines European elegance with rustic comforts. Using soothing hues, soft patterns, and antique accents, this aesthetic creates an inviting look that’s both polished and lived-in. Truly an elegant way to really live in your home.

All those slasher films would want you to believe that the cabin by the lake is a scary place, but the only thing scary about Christina Dennis’ new lake home is that it didn’t have an indoor toilet.

Christina, Edmonton’s own The DIY Mommy, has embarked on a second lake property, this time by the shores of Seba Lake, about an hour west of the provincial capital.

“After a year of successful hosting in our first lake cabin in nearby Spring Lake, we were inspired to invest in a second one on an even bigger lake. We enjoy transforming a neglected home into something beautiful, we’ve loved meeting so many people virtually as vacation rental hosts, and it’s been a wonderful side gig for our family.”

Christina, known as the DIY Mommy, has crafted a niche for herself in the busy home show circuit with her own brand of homespun, budget-friendly, beautiful decor and do-it-yourself hacks to create the perfect homelife.

Based in Edmonton, Christina maintains a lifestyle blog in her theDIYMommy.com website focusing on home décor tutorials, home organization ideas, upcycling tips and even easy recipes for the family to enjoy. The website is every homemaker’s friend.

Last year, she, along with her husband, Sean - a general contractor and electrician who owns The Greenovator Corp. – had done a complete renovation work for their

first lake front property in Spring Lake, just west of Edmonton. It has been a complete success for the family, and they have made a decision to embark on another renovation project. This time, it was a little more challenging.

“The biggest challenge with our new lake cabin project - affectionately called “The Tiny Lake House” was that it was SO small,” she tells R+D.

“At only 467 square-feet, we had to be very careful with its design. There was no bathroom (only an outhouse!), so we had to completely gut the home, redesign it, and rebuild the entire interior.”

Christina says they had come up with a plan to work around those challenges. “After much thought and reworking, came up with a layout that included a small wetroom style

bathroom, a cozy bedroom, and then a completely open living space featuring a living room that can double as a second sleeping area.”

Originally the cabin had two small bedrooms, no bathroom, and a tiny kitchen in the center. “We completely changed the layout and built a small bathroom, a mechanical room with a stacking laundry, and a more open concept kitchen, dining area and living room. The kitchen is my favourite part of the renovation, and it features vintage-look appliances in a gorgeous mint green colour with open shelving and lots of cabinet storage to maximize the small space.”

She emphasizes that the durability of the finishes is the most important aspect in designing a lake house that will see plenty of use and activity.

renoanddecor.com 63

“Luxury vinyl plank flooring is my favourite durable flooring, and I also chose washable furnishings and accessories. A relaxing decor scheme is also very important for me, and we achieved this by using light, fresh paint and furniture colours,” Christina says.

You can hear more of her thoughts in how to design such small spaces when she presents at the Home + Garden Shows in both Calgary and Edmonton.

“At the shows, I’ll be sharing 10 Tricks to Make Your Small Space Feel Bigger. I’ve designed and renovated several small homes and tiny rooms,

and these tricks have been essential in making these spaces feel more open and inviting.”

Christina has been a mainstay at both shows, having been a main stage presenter several times. “I always love meeting folks there and sharing my favourite home decorating tips and tricks!”

ADVICE FROM

KNOW WHY YOU WANT TO RENOVATE.

What problems are you trying to solve? Most renovations begin with practical issues. For instance, your bathroom may be cramped, you need more storage space in the kitchen, or there is nowhere for the children to play or do homework under your supervision.

EVALUATE THE STRUCTURE, SYSTEMS AND GENERAL CONDITION OF YOUR HOUSE.

With your renovator, list the repairs and replacements likely to be required over the next two, five and 10 years. If necessary, be prepared to make trade-offs between lifestyle improvements and work needed to keep your home in good shape.

CHECK LOCAL BYLAWS.

Before you get too involved in a particular design for adding to or substantially altering your home, you or your renovator need to know the local regulations — for instance, lot-line setbacks or septic tank requirements.

renovators

KEEP IT SIMPLE.

A complex design can result in complicated and expensive construction. Whether you want to build on to your home, change roof lines or reconfigure interior space, consult with a professional renovator on the impact of design on construction and budget. Less complex designs will often let you achieve the same goals.

WORK WITH THE STRENGTHS OF YOUR HOME.

And save money at the same time. Check under existing carpeting and sheet flooring for old hardwood flooring. Refinish old trim and moulding rather than replace it. Resurface cabinets rather than install new ones. Turn a large landing into a child’s play area, a quiet reading area or a small home office.

DON’T JUST FOCUS ON THE UPFRONT COST.

Renovation is a further investment in your home. Consider the time, energy and cost required for ongoing maintenance and possible replacement down the road. A well-planned renovation can reduce these future costs.

Courtesy of the Canadian Home builders’ Association

DON’T CUT CORNERS TO SAVE A FEW DOLLARS, OR YOU MAY NOT GET THE RESULTS YOU WANT.

There may be ways to stretch a limited budget or you may be able to scale down your project or alternatively, do it in phases over time. But don’t compromise on quality — it’s always better to do less and do it well.

LOOK AT YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD.

Exterior changes or additions that blend with the existing streetscape will probably add the most value to your home, and they will usually be appreciated the most by your neighbours. If you do want a design with a difference, think about ways of complementing neighbouring homes.

DON’T WORRY ABOUT TRENDS.

Design trends come and go. First and foremost, plan for comfort, ease of living and personal satisfaction. Enjoy exploring options and possibilities — then design the renovation that is uniquely right for you and your family.
