admit it may take some time for me to get used to seeing my face staring back at me from this page, but as the new guest editor at RENO+DECOR magazine, I am so excited to share my passion and expertise in design with you. In every issue I will begin a conversation that expands on what our editorial team has been working on to bring you the best in home design and decor trends. As I celebrate being welcomed into this role, I am acutely aware of the importance of design in our lives as it relates to our mental well-being. Transitioning through these past two years of the pandemic has shown me that sometimes the simplest home elements can give us great peace in a time of struggle. From a well-placed workspace to a whimsical piece of art, many everyday home pieces silently provide us with the comfort and organization we need to continue to move forward in an environment that is familiar and special to us that grounds our soul.

RENO + DECOR |   APRIL/MAY 2022

From a design perspective, kitchens have often been recognized as the heart of the home. Now more than ever, they’ve been at the forefront of our minds as a place to escape into an exotic recipe or a welcoming retreat during a work-fromhome lunch break. People are craving mixed materials, smart appliances and organic curves, all of which create the perfect blend of welcoming luxury that sets the mood for living comfortably now or in the future, regardless of what the universe brings our way. Some of my favourite additions to kitchen design right now are mid-tone woods, in particular walnut and oak for its beautiful, tactile texture. I am also consistently specifying organic elements such as natural stone or curved archways for the warmth it brings. And finally, incorporating ecofriendly appliances or recycled materials that are kind to Mother Nature. This issue is packed full of kitchen design inspiration, so if you have been contemplating a kitchen renovation, this is your time!

Kitchen

trends for 2022

T

he kitchen is the heart of any home. Not only does it serve our utilitarian needs, but it also doubles as a home office, family zone for homework and catching up at the end of the day, as well as a key area for entertaining. If you’re looking to renovate this multi-functional, multifaceted room, then let’s take a look at some of the trends you’ll be seeing this year and beyond.

Colour From customized storage solutions to coffee stations and bar areas for entertaining, kitchens have evolved into highly stylized spaces that reflect our personality and the way we live. When it comes to cabinets, colour is definitely the way to go. The standout colour this year is blue. Whether it’s a daring shade of navy, cobalt or teal, blue is popping up in kitchens everywhere. Though some of these shades are quite bold, blue is still a colour that is both comfortable and serene; as long as it’s not overdone.

Wood accents Beautiful marbles, quartz and warm wood tones are still a mainstay in our kitchens. Wood flooring is a definite, but so is adding wood accents in other areas of your space. A beautiful wood with a natural grain for a large island countertop can be a wonderful centrepiece, as can a beautifully grained walnut as an accent detail to portions of cabinetry. Accenting your bold-toned blue cabinetry with touches of a warm gold for your hardware will make it stand out even more.

Backsplash When it comes to your kitchen backsplash, I’m a big lover of Zellige tile. This is a wonderful tile, most often square in shape and highly lustrous with a pattern of irregular lines that

evokes a desirous hand-made vibe. The tile is simplistic and calm, yet offers so much texture and interest in a space without being a prominent pattern.

Eclectic vibe Blending different eras creates a unique look, so don’t hesitate to introduce vintage finds or antique collectibles to your more contemporary kitchen. Find some great salvaged barstools and re-cover them in a funky bold pattern. A great antique cabinet can be painted a trendy colour and turned into a bar in a modern space. Whichever way you decide to design and accessorize your kitchen, this is definitely the year to inject some uniqueness into your space and make it all your own!

A vision to behold

home renovations

by MICHELLE HOPKINS

elegant fusion

This home renovation saw an of a warm West Coast modern design with timeless appeal

W

hen Chris Arena was offered his late grandmother’s 1990’s townhome to own, he knew it would require renovations to make it a comfortable space for his wife Loren and their young son Rowan. “It was really in need of a refresh, as it had been vacant for a few years,” says Chris, of the 1,200 sq.-ft. Vancouver residence. “The biggest thing for us was to have an open concept main living area.”

The couple attended the IDS Vancouver Show and spoke to a few renovators, including Kendall Ansell, the founder of Belle Construction. “I instantly liked what Kendall had to say,” says Loren. “I appreciated her ability to listen to us. Rather than push her own esthetics, she was on board with our vision for the space — even our half-baked ideas, which she helped us with.” That Belle Construction is an 80 per cent all-female crew also appealed to the couple.

Michelle Hopkins is a freelance writer based in Vancouver. Since 2004, she has been contributing to several notable magazines, as well as three Oregon based magazines. Besides writing about travel, food, business, and inspiring people, Michelle loves writing about everything to do with real estate and interior design.

A dearth of women in trades According to the Canadian Home Builders Association of BC (CHBA BC), of the 200,000 jobs in residential construction, approximately four per cent of the construction trades workforce in the province are women, although that number is growing each year. “CHBA BC recognizes how vitally important gender diversity is in the residential construction industry,” says Neil Moody, CEO of CHBA BC. “There are incredible opportunities for women that offer challenging work, good pay and high levels of job satisfaction.”

A good match “I’m a graphic designer, and I personally felt that Kendell’s work ethic and attention to detail aligned with mine,” says Loren. “On day one she handed us a binder detailing timelines, costs and other important information.” Equally impressed, Chris says, “Kendall and her team were excellent and very professional. Another big bonus for us is that Kendall is also an award-winning interior designer.”

Turning a vision into reality The vision the Arenas took to Belle Construction was one of an elegant

fusion of warm West Coast modern with timeless appeal. From start to finish, the project took four months. The first thing Ansell needed to do was to reconfigure the existing space and flow to really make it work for the young family. With a little one underfoot, it was important to have open sightlines throughout the main floor, while keeping a functional family space in mind. That meant removing the wall that separated the galley kitchen from the living space,

new larger windows to brighten the home, and lots and lots of storage space, including custom cabinetry in the dining room. “The main floor was really closed off and had weird angles,” says Ansell. “The toughest part of this project was removing that wall. The engineer required that we add extra framing in the ceiling.” The kitchen received the most attention, while the bathrooms were updated with new sinks, vanities and cabinetry. Ansell also added new lighting, fresh coats of paint and warm hardwood flooring throughout. “The six-panel doors were solid, so all we did was paint them and add new hardware,” she says. In the end, the homeowners were thrilled with the stunning transformation. What could have been a stark, modern design, was turned into an exceptionally inviting space. “For any future renovations, we will be calling Kendall,” says Chris. renoanddecor.com

We asked Sharon Grech, Benjamin Moore’s colour and design expert, about the hottest hues for kitchens in 2022. Here are her top three choices: 1. Small kitchen

ideas

Slammed for space in your kitchen? Don’t fret. “In a small space, it’s all about finding the balance between the perfect function and the meaningful beauty that surrounds you,” says Richard Ouellette of Les Ensembliers. R+D asked for his top three tips for working with a petite cooking space. 1. The best way to make sure your small space functions the way you want it to is to start with a well laid-out plan. There are some things that simply won’t work in a smaller kitchen. Make a list of your must-haves and work with a professional to ensure every inch is maximized. 2. Create zones in your space to give you different experiences and moments throughout your day. 3. Choosing the right appliances for your space and needs is critical. I love the JennAir Urban Living collection specifically for this reason. The Urban Living series appliances are built with the same exceptional luxury details, functions and quality as a regular-size appliance. Moonstone

Next, let’s talk tile… There are so many options available these days for tile, but it’s most important to make sure you always use a tile that is specifically made for exterior use. Opt for full-bodied colour porcelain tiles such as Ciot’s Moonstone Collection, available in a variety of colours and fascinating finishes and textures. Looking for something fun? Check out our large assortment of patterned porcelain tiles that are inspired by encaustic cement tiles. They are a great way to add style and charm to your exterior kitchen backsplash, while having the added benefit of porcelain’s durability with easy maintenance and no sealing required. Why not refresh your pool with a vibrant mosaic made for an outdoor application? A trim of mosaic along the edge of the pool is a great way to add a burst of colour to your space. It is also a good idea to consider a porcelain paver, such as Ciot’s Stoncrete and X-Rock Collections to complete your look and create a unique pattern in between your greenery.

KITCHEN UPDATES Looking to update your kitchen but don’t have the budget for a full reno? From swapping out the hardware to adding a hit of colour, our design experts share five ways to make your cooking space cool again. by SARA DUCK Photo: Jules Lee

Pop of colour “Incorporating a pop of colour in a cooking space adds personality and interest in an otherwise neutral room. Colourful lower cabinets ground the space in an open-concept kitchen. Trees by MARK & BEN CULLEN

T

here is a well-known leadership theory that says selecting one word to be your focus for the year will create clarity, passion, power and lifechanging impact. With this in mind, our word for 2022 is: Trees. Trees are the world’s most advanced breathing machines, a miracle of nature that has not been matched for efficiency and economy by anything created by humankind. We need more of them. We have all experienced the many health benefits of getting out into nature or ‘forest bathing’ – breathing clean air, watching wildlife, birds and insects while we enjoy the shade and the quiet. But most importantly, trees efficiently store carbon emissions that help to fight our climate change emergency. While it has always been this way, the number of trees is in decline. We need to act fast to save these miracles of nature and ensure a safe future for people and the planet. Design trends are finding inspiration in nature, sustainability and bringing the outdoors, inside. Perhaps you’ve been considering a landscape project for your home, be it a balcony project or a more ambitious endeavour. We also have some expansion plans. On November 11, 2022, the last tree of the Highway of Heroes Tree Campaign will be planted, marking the completion of a project that has created living tributes to Canadians

who have or who are serving during times of conflict. Seven years and $12 million later, more than two million trees will be planted by this date. This initiative has inspired us to expand our mission through our new national charity, Canadian Trees for Life. Launched in 2021, with $2 million in seed funding from Natural Resources Canada through the federal government’s 2 Billion Trees Committment program, Trees for Life wants to continue the momentum started last year, right across Canada. We planted more than 270,000 trees in 2021, and we are aiming to double that number in 2022. Trees for Life’s primary objective is to mobilize community-based tree-planting initiatives across Canada. Using our insights and networks, Trees for Life will provide Canadian tree-planting organizations with the tools, resources, and horticultural trade networks to enable them to grow existing tree-planting initiatives, implement new ones, and educate their communities about the value of trees. If you haven’t got your one-word focus for the year, consider ‘trees’, for all the life-changing impact they bring.

Join us in assisting communities across Canada to dramatically increase their tree canopies:

K

itchen design is an everevolving process. It embraces functionality, balance, the perfect layout, smart storage solutions, proper lighting and ventilation and the right cabinetry choice, all while honouring style and

esthetics. Exceptional design is an aspiration for most kitchen designers, and just as important, are wheelchair accessible kitchens built with ADA compliance in mind. While ADA-compliant kitchens have advanced over the years, the reality is, there currently are more

kitchens that don’t require ADA compliance than those that do. But with the senior population projected to increase and aging in place a viable option, we anticipate a shift in the kitchen design industry toward even more advancements to cater to that need.

In an effort to address that demand, designing with accessibility in mind is becoming an important consideration in residential architecture and design. In addition, kitchen furniture and cabinet manufacturers and suppliers are introducing innovative and cutting-edge systems to support and accommodate this growth.

What makes a great accessible kitchen design?

Photo: Fisher paykal

An ideal layout should have a lot of maneuvering space and take into consideration all the needs of the user. You want to avoid areas that have cross routes and parallel surfaces, and limit travel distances between functional zones. Kitchen styles to consider are the single row (if you are limited for space), and L-shaped kitchen, a U-shaped kitchen, an L-shaped kitchen with an island, and a semi-island with at least 60 inches minimum of accessible space between counters and opposing sides.

FUNCTIONAL ZONES Functional zones facilitate the process of prepping and making meals. It includes countertops and food prep zones, food storage, tableware and cutlery storage, a clean-up area, as well as cooking zones. The goal is to eliminate any barriers that can interfere with being able to

THE PERFECT LAYOUT

comfortably work in the kitchen. Equally important, the design needs to consider the user’s motor skills in relation to their preferred movement if they are using a wheelchair, a walker or other mobility device. Whether right-handed or left-handed, they tend to use their dominant hand to use their device and the opposite hand to perform tasks such as opening drawers and moving things around.

ADAPTABILITY This kind of design involves rethinking how a kitchen functions. That means adjusting sink and countertop heights; installing induction countertops and motorized cabinet systems; addressing knee and toe guidelines, incorporating appliances with mobility enhancements such as pull-out dishwasher drawers; incorporating smart storage solutions; and installing flooring that is as flat as possible with few grade changes. While ADA compliance takes centre stage, you don’t need to compromise

in style and esthetics. Final finishes such as cabinetry, tile backsplash, and flooring still have a role to play in the design scheme. There is ample room to add character and texture, colour and to play with tones.

OPTIMAL LIGTING, VENTILATION + AUDIBILITY The perfect mixture of ambient, task and accent lighting enhances the kitchen design while providing functional capability and access within the space. For those with a level of hearing loss, audibility is key and can be addressed by installing timer buzzers and smoke alarms to assist the user. Depending on the electrical code of your region, installing switches and receptacles within the cabinets and drawers that also store appliance can provide efficient access and use. We are watching the development of accessible kitchen design and look forward to the innovative solutions that designers and architects come up with.

CREATE A WORKABLE HOME OFFICE, EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU DON’T HAVE THE SPACE

W

by BRODY ROBINSON

hether you’re new to working from home or have done it since the beginning of the pandemic, a home office has become a necessity for people just like you. Your office could currently be in your spare bedroom or in a small corner of your apartment; it doesn’t matter if you have a designated area or you are working on the kitchen table, now is an ideal time to update your space. At this year’s National Home Show: The Big One, you will find inspiration for your home office and other renovation and space-saving needs.

workable home office, even in the tightest of spaces.

The right location The ideal home office is one that is in a space where you won’t be distracted. Privacy is vital if you find yourself at home all day with your family. The right location is key, as is making sure your office has a door. Shutting out distractions and shutting in work allows you the needed disconnect between work and life. Each can be enjoyed, but make sure to keep them separate.

The right lighting When it comes to a home office, the right light is crucial. Natural light is the best – many famous authors try to situate themselves near a window to use natural light, encouraging creativity and increasing productivity. With the pandemic keeping so many of us indoors, try to let in some natural light and take in the outdoors while you work.

Ergonomic-friendly furniture “With the new normal of parents working from home, and online school for students, the home office needs an upgrade,” says Denise Hayward, show director for the National Home Show: The Big One. “You may think you don’t have the space for a home office – but think again!” To help you get inspired, here are some tips to help you create a

Whether it’s the kind of chair you buy, the height of your desk, or your computer setup, your home office should have ergonomic components. If a home office is becoming your new normal, don’t be afraid to splurge. Your back will thank you for it!

Crafty and convertible Make the most of a tight situation by using convertible furniture

and decor. Your space can be aesthetically pleasing and great for extra storage. Create an area that’s transformable enough to use for both work and everyday life, making it fit your needs. Get creative with desks that fold into walls, modular shelving or seats that function as storage boxes for a multi-purpose and multi-functional space.

Make it your own Your home office is still your office and should represent you. Choose a colour scheme that matches your overall aesthetic and you will look forward to sitting at your desk every day. Add those plants that bring some nature in or an animal print to spice up your space. This is your home office – make it your own with whatever makes you happy!

Check out the National Home Show: The Big One, April 15-24, 2022 at Toronto’s Enercare Centre for more ideas on how to transform your space and make your home office work for you. Clean lines, traditional flooring and hits

of bold colour breathe new life into this home

W

hen Jude Kamal and her design team at Sansa Interiors met with her clients, they quickly relized the builder-grade home needed a serious contemporary update. The 3,000-sq.-ft. home had clean lines but outdated interiors.

APRIL/MAY 2022

So, Kamal and her team quickly got to work brainstorming a fresh and modern design scheme. “We knew that functionality was their top concern, so we approached their house renovation in layers. We brought in materials and finishes that would complement the function of

the space, while still making it feel brand new; this enabled us to stay within budget,” says Kamal. With pandemic restrictions in full effect, it became a challenge for the design team to get permits, find specific finishes, and have crews into the house to complete the renovation.

“We had this

grand

vision of a massive custom sectional sofa that could seat all of our clients’ guests.”

“Even though the permits forced the project to be delayed by a month, we were still able to get creative in how we phased out the construction to keep the delays at a minimum,” says Kamal. “COVID-19 may have made the process more challenging, but it didn’t affect the quality of the end result.”

For this project, Kamal and her team drew inspiration from Moroccan architecture (since their clients appreciated its simplicity and organic feel) and modern design. They gutted the home’s inside while honouring the original architecture, which allowed the rooms to flow better.

renoanddecor.com

43

In addition, they kept the colour palette neutral and introduced light wood tones and minimalist-inspired furniture to create a modern and streamlined home. In the kitchen, they introduced a bold cobalt blue, echoing a typical shade found in Moroccan architecture. A more modern, subtle blue was used in the laundry room. Kamal and her team got creative when designing the perfect space for their clients to entertain and throw large parties. “We had this grand vision of a massive custom sectional sofa that could seat all of our clients’ guests. We were told it was impossible to build what we were trying to achieve, but we refused to take no for an answer,” says Kamal.

Through various experiments with cardboard test models, the team was able to come up with a way to create a large enough sectional that was sturdy in build and could still fit through the door. “As a final touch, we worked closely with the millworker to detail this perfect custom sectional that would fit seamlessly into our clients’ space, using a fabric that was both easily cleaned and had a high thread count so it could withstand heavy use,” Kamal explains. By prioritizing crucial rooms, Kamal and her team were able to create a beautiful and functional family home for their clients. For more information, visit sansainteriors.com

COOKING UP

FIRE SAFETY IN THE KITCHEN

The kitchen is known as the heart of the home for a reason. It’s the place we gather to share meals and create memories every day. But did you know cooking is a leading cause of home fires and home-fire deaths?* Before the next time you turn on the oven, stove or other cooking appliance, make sure you follow these fire safety tips to keep your home and family protected *Council of Canadian Fire Marshals and Fire Commissioners

ESTABLISH KID-SAFE ZONES Never leave cooking unattended and designate a “kidfree zone” of at least one metre around the stove and any area where hot food or drinks are being prepared. Create a space away from any kitchen appliances where kids can play freely while still being supervised. Make sure to keep knives and appliance cords away from edges for when young children do enter the kitchen.

CLEAN THE APPLIANCES Food splashes and splatters all the time, but don’t leave the mess. Keep your appliances clean of grease and food debris that could potentially catch flame, and don’t forget to clean your oven at least every three to six months.

AVOID POTENTIAL BURNS Cook on the back burners of the stove whenever possible and keep all pot and pan handles turned inward and away from the stove edge to avoid bumping them. To prevent hot food or steam from burning your skin, always stir and lift pan lids away from you. Keep oven mitts and potholders near the stove so you can quickly access them when needed and remember to place hot items in the centre of counters on non-slip placemats.

INSTALL AND TEST SMOKE ALARMS

KEEP A FIRE SUPPRESSANT ON HAND

The National Fire Protection Association recommends protecting your home by installing smoke alarms on every level, including the basement and inside every bedroom. Alarms should be tested every month and the batteries changed every six months. For convenient protection, upgrade to First Alert 10-year sealed battery alarms to eliminate battery replacements and late-night battery chirps for a decade. Even with 10-year alarms installed, it’s still important to regularly test them.

Always have a fire extinguishing device in a close and easily accessible location when cooking. Keeping one on hand is important but knowing how to use it makes all the difference when a fire does happen and every second counts. For an easy-to-use solution, the First Alert EZ Fire Spray features a lightweight spray-can design with no pins or levers – just point and spray.

Spruce up your space with spring-inspired floral wallpaper

N

o doubt you are familiar with the classic spring saying, “April showers, bring May flowers.” We hold on to the hope that by May, boom, everything will be in bloom, and suddenly all is right in our world. But don’t you wish you could capture that special spring feeling at home all year round? Besides your budding plant family, incorporating floral wallpaper will give you that springtime look, toute l’année. When choosing the right floral wallpaper, remember to select a motif that you won’t tire of. Although wallpaper has come a long way in terms of installation (hello, peel and stick!), it still takes time and effort to hang correctly. So, it’s a good idea to get a sample piece before you commit to an entire wall. And, speaking of walls, remember, less is more when working with florals. For example, you may (in a burst of spring fever) have a desire to wallpaper an entire room. While this is definitely a bold statement, you may find it overwhelming over time. Choosing to create one feature wall in a space will give you the look you are after without going over the top. Today you can find a variety of floral wallpaper to choose from in different styles and price points. Here are some of our favourites.

magine it: the smell of popcorn, the muted whispers and finally, brilliant images and striking sound filling the room as the movie starts. You can see yourself in the comfort of your living room, watching with friends and family and then suddenly, you wake up and realize it’s only a dream. You can turn that dream into a reality, and your living room into a home theatre, by including a state-of-the-art, large-screen TV from Hisense and discover a whole new way to watch watch movies, listen to music and play games. Hisense, one of the top five television brands in the world and the top-selling TV in China, has just released its L9G Series 4K Smart TriChroma Laser TV, and it’s the kind of cutting-edge technology you’ve been dreaming of. And, what’s really great about it is that it won’t matter where you decide to set it up. With its anti-glare technology, the sunlight from your floor-to-ceiling windows or the glow

from the lamps on an end table won’t interfere or degrade your viewing experience. The ALR screen blocks more than 85 per cent of glare, so all you see are crisp, bright images, no matter where you are in the room. “The L9G is an exceptional TV, with the most true-to-life images to be seen on a screen,” says Lindsay Takashima, vicepresident of sales, consumer electronics, from Hisense Canada. “The result is an image that projects images on your screen the way the director intended us to see them in a theatre-like way, but now, we can do it from the comfort of our home.” Seamlessly integrated into any decor, the TV allows you and your family to enjoy your individual activities, whether it’s intense gaming, watching sports, or getting absorbed in fast-paced action movies. The audio component is amazing, with speakers that push sound to every corner of the room, creating an unparalleled 3D audio experience — you really will think you’re in a movie theatre.

as the long-standing trend of the all-white kitchen finally fizzled out? I’ve recently seen some bolder trends bubbling up to the surface, as is the case in this dramatic kitchen design, which became a showpiece in a brand-new build that I recently undertook with my team. The

ask: A sophisticated space, anything but common white or neutral. Here’s where we went with it. We were starting from the ground up, and as a designer, that’s an ideal scenario, giving us complete flexibility with our design direction. As with all our projects, our clients – in this case a young professional couple with two young children – guided the concept

for the space. They were big on entertaining and, like the thoughtful hosts they were, they wanted their space to make a big splash. At the same time, their busy lives demanded practicality and integrated ease. We looked to high-contrast elements to make the statement our clients were hoping for. We maintained the light, contemporary

colour palette of a gentle hint of grey, and dressed it up with high-contrast black elements. These included the dark-veined marble countertops and backsplash, and an amazing dark obsidian range with chrome inserts that echoed the hue of the central island – an instant focal point and natural gathering place within this open-concept kitchen and living area. When planning your kitchen (and hopefully you’re working with a professional designer), choose your focal point first. Then, plan everything else around it. In most kitchens, the main focus is the range hood and island, which anchor the entire composition, and are organic attractions from both a style and function perspective. Choose something that stands out, but still aligns with the overall esthetic of the space. The kitchen island requires some special consideration, since it’s a central element, physically and in terms of use. Determine what the primary purpose of your island will be in your kitchen, since it can serve many different functions, from food preparation, dining and entertaining, to storage. Not only will this inform the specs, but it will affect other aspects of your kitchen as well. In this kitchen design, we maximized the island by satisfying all three. Our clients requested a raised breakfast bar to visually conceal the cooking clutter at counter level

tip: If your island is dark, try to use a lighter floor tile to create contrast and make the island “pop.”

when entertaining guests. This allows visitors to sit and still contribute to the conversation, removed from the mess. While we’re talking function, storage is a recurring theme in this kitchen design, and this was a high priority for us. The kitchen can get cluttered quickly with all the action it sees on a daily basis. To get ahead of the mess, we included features such as built-in spice racks, pull-out garbage bins, extradeep pots-and-pans drawers tucked underneath the cooktop, and a Lazy Susan in corner cabinets that maximize every inch while keeping kitchen essentials conveniently on hand. Last, but not least, lighting was an important consideration – natural and artificial. Aside from functional

necessity, lighting also creates ambience and highlights thoughtful features. Avoid blocking natural light that streams through windows and doorways, keeping sightlines open. Then, get creative with your lighting plan. Along with standard pot lights, add pendants, under- and in-cabinet lighting and even wall sconces, to add interest. In this kitchen, we went against traditional upper cabinets windowside for that very reason, opting instead for a simple stone ledge. A new kitchen is a big investment. Ensure you’re working with a professional designer so all your wants and needs are “baked in” the design plan.

tips & tricks

Deciding whom to

HIRE

Once you have interviewed renovators, checked their references and received written price quotes from those you are interested in hiring, it’s time to decide who will be doing your job Renovators should be allowed adequate time to prepare a bid for your project, and you must ensure that each renovator is working with the same plans and specifications. For all but the simplest projects, you should expect the renovator to present their bid in person, so that they can discuss each aspect with you an answer any question you may have.

1

Decide the importance of each aspect of your evaluation. While overall price is important, it is only one factor. Many homeowners who have successfully completed major home renovations speak about the importance of “peace of mind” – working with a renovator they trusted and felt confident in.

6

2 Once you have met with the renovators who are bidding on your job, you should review each set of bid documents carefully before deciding who to hire.

5

If you have a particularly strong sense of confidence in one of the renovators, they are probably your best choice, even if their price is not the lowest. In the end, you should choose the renovator based on your sense of the overall value they can provide to you.

Compare every aspect of their bids – the description of the work, specifications (materials and products), price and allowances, deposit and payment milestones, project schedule and any additional recommendations or ideas for your project.

Review the information you collected during and after your initial impressions of each renovator, and what their previous customers had to say about them.

IN THE KITCHEN

W

by KATE DAVIDSON hen it comes to interior design, function and fashion go hand in hand. While it’s certainly possible to achieve each independently of the other, without both, the space falls short. Contrary to popular belief, you can have your cake and eat it, too – particularly with regard to the kitchen. In this room especially, each design decision requires thoughtful consideration of beauty and brawn. Here are three key areas that we focussed on in this recent project for a busy family of six.

This kitchen needed to be a showpiece to be used and admired from all

viewpoints

Colour palette Black and white are a classic combination with a strong, modern sensibility. While one might typically consider it for its esthetic qualities, it has a practical purpose, too. Black and white rooms have a timelessness

that won’t soon get dated. Despite this, they somehow manage to maintain their trendy appeal. This bodes well for a kitchen renovation, which can be expensive and hard to live through. Once your kitchen reno is over and done with, you won’t want to do it again for a very long

time. With a black and white palette, you won’t have to. This kitchen features a classic white backdrop, which acts as our “neutral” hue. Then we added punctuation via the black range hood and lower cabinets, which become focal points and attract the eye. To offset the white and black cabinetry, we chose warm-toned quartz countertops and floor tiles, which soften the space. We then added further interest and warmth by combining brass and black fixtures. The cooking area is the focus of most kitchens, and rightfully so. Here,

get around to it) and are durable enough to survive daily wear and tear with grace. Our clients specifically requested surfaces and finishes that were hard wearing and efficient, to meet and withstand the demands of this family with four teenaged boys. Given the option (and with all the amazing products on the market these days, there’s always an option) I always recommend choosing something that meets your functional needs while fulfilling your style goals.

Storage space Contrary to colour and finishes, storage is typically considered purely for its functionality, but don’t discount its many esthetic attributes. Overall, having a sufficient, smartly designed storage system makes it easy to keep your kitchen neat and tidy without

too much effort. But in terms of the storage elements themselves, explore different options to up your style game. For example, in this kitchen, every drawer and shelf was accounted for in our design, which included dualpurpose pieces that maximized every inch in this family-style kitchen. We added interest with contrasting floating wood shelves and a built-in China cabinet unit, complete with a small drawer for placemats. The kitchen can be a real pressure cooker, both from a design perspective and when it comes to daily demands. For a truly seamless and highfunctioning kitchen, be sure to factor your overall lifestyle in at the design stage. Work with a professional designer like myself to ensure all your needs and wants are built into a design from the start and that will stand the test of time.

we made the range and hood fan a focal point by centring them in the space and finishing the cooking area with a strong, square-shaped hood cover, in a bold black hue of course!

Functional finishes Finishes are another typical esthetic focus, but don’t forget to weigh their practicality before you commit. If you live a busy life, as most of us do, look for finishes that require minimal maintenance on a regular basis, are easy to clean (when you

by RON RAPP Whether building new or tackling a renovation, construction today involves building science and hightech materials that require educated and knowledgeable contractors. Working with a professional renovator or licensed builder will ensure you have access to a team of industry specialists who are educated in their trade. This way, you can be sure your project meets permitting requirements and ultimately, delivers the best outcome for your family. It’s also worth noting, by working with professionals, you will gain access to trade pricing for materials and skilled trade teams, which is important for proper product installation and warranty protection. There are also often rebates and government incentives to improve the energy

efficiency of your home, to help save you money.

High-performance homes Homes built above the basic code that are operating with higher efficiencies are referred to in the industry as high-performance homes. The B.C. government has targeted 2032 as the deadline when all new homes in the province should be built to a Net-Zero ready standard, meaning the components are in place for the home to be able to produce as much energy as its homeowners consume, for a ‘netzero’ energy consumption level. The same outcomes can be realized when you renovate your

current or new home and you can look to incorporate certain features of high-performance into your project. Renovations are currently not required to meet the same energy performance levels as a newly built home however, the changes are being encouraged through federal grants and provincial rebate programs. Tangible rewards

In addition to energy cost savings and the environmental benefits of high-performance homes, there are many other tangible rewards that your family will experience. Building to a higher performance level means you will be building a legacy – a home that will last through the ages. Or, if you are looking to sell in the next five to 10 years, the resale value will be protected as comparable new homes on the market will also be built to these higher standards. home. Combined with the new heating and cooling mechanical systems, fresh air is regularly circulated for a higher standard of indoor air quality – a huge benefit for anyone dealing with allergies or asthma, not to mention smoke from forest fires experienced in recent past years. Indoor climate control becomes a non-issue when building high performance. Built to create an constant year-round temperature, your home will be warm in the winter and cool in the summer, with an effortless touch of a button.

his townhouse kitchen with adjacent family room was destined to be the most used space in the home. The room spans the width of the house, but the living area portion was shallow and its relationship with the kitchen was intimate. When you find yourself living in close quarters, you quickly learn that your relationships with those around you are even more important. The same is true for the spaces within a

small, open-plan home. Areas in close proximity are related geographically and in other ways, too. The visual transition from one area to the next needs to be smooth. Colour schemes, materials and the broader esthetic should relate. In an open-concept kitchen and living area such as this one, visual cohesion is critical. In an open-concept home, the kitchen is so much more than a foodprep and eating area. It often doubles as a homework area and home office, triples as an entertaining space and

games room. In addition, a wall-less floorplan means the kitchen is likely the first thing you see when you enter the home, so you want to ensure that a welcoming view greets you. You can create continuity by carrying the same flooring in the living areas and into the kitchen. Consistent hardwood throughout will create the illusion of more space by blurring the boundary between the kitchen, living room and any other adjoining areas. By the same token, use a common colour palette for the whole open

area. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to use one colour; but rather, make sure your choices are complementary. Remember, the goal is continuous flow. In this connected kitchen and living area, we achieved continuity with a design that prioritized a furniture feel, as opposed to letting the kitchen chaos overwhelm. We integrated all the kitchen appliances with panels and added touch-latch mechanisms to avoid having hardware on most of the kitchen cabinetry. The media wall was designed as part of the kitchen millwork. By repeating elements, such as the black accents on the oak veneers, we created visual balance and unity in the space. The decor was thoughtfully selected with layers of texture and a repetition of tonal taupe and greige that blends with the walls and draperies, leaving the room feeling light and airy. Richly hued, luxurious fabrics on the contrasting toss cushions were inspired by the modern art featured in the room.

The three Kelly Wearstler hanging pendant lamps suspended over the kitchen island feature a curvilinear design that complements the customdesigned range hood, while providing some relief from the modern linear elements throughout the space. The island itself serves as a functional feature and a visual anchor for the space, seamlessly leading us from the living room into the kitchen. Used as a spacious food prep area, serving and dining space, it eliminates the need for a dining table and chairs,

and frees up valuable space for other essentials. Make the most of this essential by investing in a quality countertop and if you’re including a kit, a great sink from a reputable brand like Blanco. Whether spacious or small like this one, the kitchen is the hub of the home. Invest in the best you can afford and work with an experienced designer to ensure your kitchen delivers on function and style, within the greater context of your home and life.

Modern

O

ld world” and modern – at first glance a contradiction of characteristics, and also my objective as the designer on this kitchen project. This kitchen was designed for an active family with kids, dogs and high expectations for a space that combines classic European charm with modern conveniences. Oh, and it had to be durable (remember: kids and dogs). Generally speaking, there’s a lot riding on the kitchen design. Designing this space can often be a huge investment, and to be honest, not always the easiest process. However, most would agree that a renovated or updated kitchen is often topping the list of our home musthaves. Since the kitchen sets the esthetic tone for the rest of the space, it is often the starting point for the rest

of the home. But great kitchen design is more than just skin deep. From a technical perspective, the success of the design directly correlates to how smoothly (or strenuously) your “everyday” goes. This kitchen project has it all, and arguably the best part? It’s built right in. Here’s our recipe for success. The homeowner was a key inspiration behind the design, in terms of style and function. She loves to cook and entertain, so the kitchen fittingly focussed on the LaCanche oven, for its practical uses and its amazing esthetic value. You might not realize it at first glance, but at a convenient arm’s length to the right is a huge double fridge, softened with beautiful panelling that matches the cabinetry. We further prioritized beautiful function in the form of custom cabinets, the central island and a dedicated pantry area.

renoanddecor.com

67

The island is another common kitchen focal point, thanks to its central positioning and multiple practical purposes, whether it’s used for food prep, serving or dining. Once you’ve identified your primary (and secondary) use of the island, ensure it’s built to accommodate your needs. For example, an integrated wine fridge; a shelf for serving-ware and table linens; or storage for cutting boards, knives and spices. To top it off (literally) we finished this island showpiece with a real honed marble countertop. Marble is porous and can scratch, but in our case this characteristic worked in our favour. The homeowner welcomed the stories and memories told over time by a natural patina. When doing custom cabinets, I like extended uppers to help maximize every inch of available space. And as I’ve learned, storage space is always in demand. Typically, that spot between your cabinets and the ceiling are left blank, empty and wasted. What if you could add an extra shelf to every

68

RENO + DECOR |   APRIL/MAY 2022

cabinet? While the area beneath the ceiling can be a bit harder to reach, it’s an ideal place to tuck away occasional or seasonal items. To balance the clients’ functional needs and esthetic goals, we used a combination of open and closed cabinets and shelves, which supply valuable storage space while adding visual interest and helping tell the homeowner’s story. We finished the cabinets in a natural colour palette that echoes a more traditional esthetic. This particular kitchen afforded us the luxury of space, so we indulged in a butler’s pantry, accessed through an arched doorway that was designed to feel like it has a history behind it. Ample storage, durable countertops and a locally sourced stone backsplash coordinate with the authentic feel of the connected kitchen.

The overall palette was inspired by nature, and features wood tones with “watery” touches of blue, green and soft white. The palette flows from the kitchen into the adjoining open-concept living area. Retractable glass doors provide a

seamless transition from the kitchen to the outdoor living area. This kitchen satisfied the homeowners cravings for a space that started out as a design dichotomy, but ended up beings exactly what they wanted and needed.

Freshen up

big style

your space for

spring by LISA ROGERS

Usher in the new season with floral accents and fresh patterns

Play with floral wallpaper Nothing harkens spring more than this season’s crop of floral wallpaper. Depending on your style, you can go big and bold with large patterns and blooms or you can stay understated with less imposing prints. I love floral wallpaper functioning as an accent wall in a powder room or the bedroom. Complement the paper by finding soft furnishings and accessories that bring some of the featured colours into the space.

70

RENO + DECOR |   APRIL/MAY 2022

S

pring is a gorgeous season, not only because the days get longer and the sun shines brighter, but the feeling of optimism it brings is hard to beat. And while we tend to focus a lot of our attention on spring cleaning this time of year, it’s also a wonderful opportunity to refresh your space with some simple, stunning decor ideas that can bring life back to your home. Follow these suggestions to bring the season into your own space.

Bring in some pampas grass Pampas grass is very popular right now, and I love how it exudes a relaxed, bohemian look that can fit into any modern or neutral colour palette in your home. Because it’s a dried floral, it will stand the test of time, so it’s a great investment with zero maintenance. These work anywhere, and depending on which ones you go with, you can place them in any size vase for any room.

Brighten up your doorway As with your bookshelves, why not try a similar treatment on your door or even just the frame? It’s the easiest upgrade that packs a beautiful punch, and raises your home’s curb appeal in the process. A couple of hours and your favourite spring-inspired shade, and you will have completed a project that lightens up your home and makes an impact.

Repaint your bookcases Bring life back to your built-in bookcase by painting it a fresh spring colour. I love the idea of a soft pastel – think mint or pink – and then play with your accents by adding topiaries or little pots of fresh flowers scattered across the shelves. If that still feels like too much of a commitment, I do love the idea of colour-coordinating your books – it still looks fabulous and curated.

Switch your bedding Swap your cotton or heavier fabric bedding for the pleasure of soft linens. With warmer weather approaching, you want linens that feel light to the touch and don’t (literally) weigh you down. There are so many colour options to choose from, but I love to stay neutral with slate grey, sand or cream tones.

Try citrus centrepieces Build your own seasonal centrepiece with a quick trip to the grocers: Buy a bunch of tangerines, lemons or limes and fill a clear glass vase to place in the centre of your dining table. It immediately feels like spring has arrived and reminds me of dining al fresco.

ARTS OFF MAIN GALLERY by MICHELLE HOPKINS LOCALE

WATERCOLOUR by Eileen Mosca

I

n 2003, seven local artists got together to open Arts Off Main Gallery as a way to showcase their works. Nearly two decades later, the cooperative is operated by nine established local artists who sell their original creations. Throughout the bright, 1,200-sq.-ft gallery, there is something for everyone, from original paintings, pottery and fabric art to carvings and jewellery. “We turned a cafe into a gallery and we all bought in for $1,000 and sweat equity,” says one of its founding members, painter Eileen Mosca. “Three years ago, the café sold, but we were lucky to find our new home around the corner on Commercial Drive.” Besides the eclectic tight-knit collaborative style of artists, the gallery is also committed to connecting with the surrounding community by inviting guest artists and artisans to showcase and sell their pieces. “We have one young artist creating button drawings, while one of our former partners, Danielle Allard, was recently offered a year residency with a master carver in Haida Gwaii,” says Mosca. “The caliber of talent in the gallery is extremely high.”

74

RENO + DECOR |   APRIL/MAY 2022

The gallery is much more than a place to buy art. There’s a sense of community that exists — kids and four-legged friends are both welcome. In addition, many locals come in regularly to hang out, kibbitz or ask the artists questions. “We aren’t just here to sell, we love to discuss our work,” says Mosca, adding the gallery’s mandate has always been to sell art that is affordable and accessible to everyone. Born and raised in New York City, Mosca quips that she moved to BC “for love.” The accomplished painter originally began her artistic career as a commercial silkscreen printer and graphic designer. She has been involved in both group and solo exhibits of her silkscreen prints, many of which are part of collections in North America, England, Ireland, Europe, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Today, Mosca is focussed on watercolour paintings. When asked what she likes to paint, Mosca paraphrases renowned American pop artist Robert Rauschenberg: “I like painting my own quirky view of Vancouver.”
