Now how do you go about making it your very own?Art is the answer! But just how do you approach placing art in your home? It’s a very subjective matter, so it might help readers know how a professional approach the subject. We spoke with Christina Loc, renowned interior designer who has done showhome decor for several homebuilders and is the owner of Calgary’s Metro Element boutique design store in Kensington. “When styling a room, keep in mind too that, typically, symmetry creates flow and is calming for the soul. SPICE UP THE BATHROOM Floating shelves are a great alternative for filling up your walls. When a client has nine bathrooms in their home, having a canvas painting above the toilet in every bathroom can get repetitive and boring.

MIX IT UP This large scale painting, 48x72, already looks great over the sofa. But, why not add another wall piece like a mirror and hang a couple of plants to make your space even more interesting? Depending on the scale of your art, hang art about 4 to 6 inches above your furniture piece or 60 inches from centre of the painting to the floor. Trust your judgement when placing art in your home, while keeping in mind, the number one mistake people make is hanging art too high.

There are three tips I can offer when placing art in your home: Look at your home as a whole. The idea behind this is so you can create balance throughout. You will need to figure out where you want ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ space. Positive space is where an object is occupying the space versus negative space is the empty space surrounding the objects. You want a nice balance of both so that your home doesn’t feel too cold and empty or too cluttered and fussy. Use different mediums and alternative wall décor. It’s best to mix different types of wall art. If you choose to only hang canvas paintings everywhere, your home will look flat and repetitive. Spice up your walls by including a nice selection of framed prints, meaningful photos, mirrors, wall art made of wood or metal, tapestry and floating shelves. For those plant lovers, add nature to your décor with wall planters.
For more of a modern minimalist look, hang prints of the same size with matching frames stacked one on top of each other evenly spaced out in vertical or horizontal rows.
How do you approach placing art in your home? Art really is subjective. I think if the art in your home makes you feel happy and provokes positive energy or provides a sense of calmness and serenity, you’ve picked good pieces.

Not only does it save you space but makes such an incredible wall art statement. Another way to spice up your walls is to consider the wall you are placing your artwork on. Paint it a different colour, add some wallpaper or create some texture with wall paneling. Express your personality and make it your style. This all boils down to what feels good for you. Choose a neutral and calming palette. Select bold and bright colours. Match the art to your chosen accent colour and décor. Let it stand out and make a statement. When choosing art, the choices are endless, and you really can’t go wrong. Just have fun with it. Where in the home do you think it’s important to place art? A painting, a sculpture or some other objet d’art. Great places to hang art in a home is on a blank wall where nothing is happening like at a front entrance, in a hallway, up a stairway, on a stairway landing, a bare wall in a room where there is no furniture or window on thatOtherwall.great places to hang art would be where a low furniture piece or object is covering part of a big wall so for example, over a sofa or bed; above a console table, sideboard, dresser or desk; beside or above a fireplace, inside a bathroom over a toilet or towel bar. Talk about scale, what’s too big or too small for a space? When placing artwork above furniture, generally speaking, an art piece should be somewhere between 2/3 to 3/4 the size of the furniture piece. When debating on size, stick to the bigger is better rule as long as it doesn’t overpower everything else in theSmallerroom.pieces should be dedicated to small walls. They could also be grouped together as a pair or done with multiple pieces to form a gallery wall.
Consider paint, wallpaper or paneling on your walls. In this modern yet retro looking office, wallpaper, vibrant colours and various patterns are all layered together to create this fun room. While there is a lot happening in this room, the space still feels very balanced with the large blue print above the desk meant to mirror all the blues happening across from it on the chaise and window wall. The room is then anchored by a blue patterned rug. Looking straight into the room, the layers of black and white patterns add an extra depth to the design. Three pieces of an all white 3-D wall decor is hung on top of a psychedelic black and white patterned wallpaper plays with your eyes and gives you a lot to look at. It’s the wallpaper and 3-D art that really brings this style together.

WATERCOLOUR ART CAN PROVOKE POSITIVE FEELINGS AND ENERGY
One thing to point out, a very common mistake people make when hanging art is hanging them too high. Hanging art at eye level is best, which is about 60 inches from the centre of the art piece to the floor. Before punishing your walls with lots of accidental holes, have someone help you by holding the art up where you think you want it or map it out with some painter’s tape before putting that nail into the wall. Where would you recommend someone on a budget to find good art for the home? I may be bit biased, but I do know of a great place where you can get some pretty cool art that is reasonably priced! WHAT WAS THE DESIGN INSPIRATION FOR THIS HOUSE?
Colour was critical because we wanted the home to be as interesting as our client. He had a wonderful collection of rolled prints, trinkets and knick-knacks that he collected over the years. We wanted to create plenty of opportunities to display them – especially in the gallery wall in the dining area. We wanted each space to be enticing and encourage someone to look around for just a second longer. We also felt that being bolder with colour was the best way to emulate our client’s wonderful personality.

During our first meeting, our client said how he always wanted the colourful Eames Hang it all Rack, so we put it up in the foyer. And it’s funny because all the colours on that piece ended up somewhere in his home. It was a great jumping-off point for the entire project.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR HOMEOWNERS WHO ARE AFRAID TO USE COLOUR?
HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO CREATE YOUR VISION AND MEET THE NEEDS OF YOUR CLIENT? We started from the living room and worked our way out. On our first design meeting, we pitched a rounded sofa, as it would work with the existing layout of the room better and from there, we carefully selected pieces that were functional, flexible and allowed our client to entertain large groups of people with ease. The fireplace was a challenge, as we replaced an electric one with gas, and the client wanted to keep elements of the existing concrete wall. So, we came up with a linear design to salvage as much of the concrete as possible.
WHEN WORKING WITH COLOUR, WHAT DESIGN PRINCIPLES HOMEOWNERSSHOULDKEEP IN MIND?
Designing with colour is very personal and is not a onesize-fits-all approach. Pieces should be considered if they bring you joy and tell a story as well as have a function. If you have an out-of-the-box idea, go for it! Life is too short for everything to be grey walls and natural tones.
Contrast is key and don’t be afraid to go darker on the walls. If the room has windows and is orientated with the sun, the room won’t feel dark.

To achieve the look, Genovese chose a neutral palette and combined various textures and natural touches. “I mixed woods, leather, faux shearling, wools, linen, paper and more to create interest and bring warmth and character to the space,” she explains.
W hen JaclyndesignerGenovese of Spaces by Jacflash set out to design a nursery for her own baby, she had a clear vision in mind; it had to be tranquil, organic and feel like a haven. “I knew I wanted to design a space for my son that marries both contemporary and traditional pieces to coincide with the rest of my home,” says Genovese, “but it also needed to be a calm place that felt special to me and my baby.”

In addition to the organic elements that are draped around the room, Genovese incorporated beautiful antique zoo paintings from the 1800s that hang above the crib, a nod to her mother who purchased them at an auction when she worked as a zookeeper for the Toronto Zoo. “The images are very sentimental to me,” says Genovese. “They were in the house that I grew up in, in gold frames, so I refurbished them with wood frames to match the neutral and organic vibe of the nursery.” Of course, when designing a nursery, function must be equal to beauty.
So, how did Genovese tackle the challenge? “Functional pieces like a change table/dresser can be boring, but if you customize it by swapping out the hardware, it’s an easy way to elevate the design,” she says.
Genovese also suggests making sure there is a place for everything and to combine old with new for a unique look. “For my son’s nursery, I combined an antique dresser that I found on Facebook marketplace, a vintage IKEA pendant lamp that I bought on eBay, a wooden side table from my family’s cottage, the vintage zoo photos, along with modern elements such as the crib and modern rocker from West Coast Kids,” says Genovese. With her savvy shopping skill and keen design eye, all of the elements in the space combine to create a dreamy nursery overflowing with special touches, a perfect place to spend time with her baby. good chair is like a good friend – it’s there to support and embrace you and bring comfort and colour to your life. Dating back some 5,000 years, this essential piece of furniture has evolved from its predominantly utilitarian origins. Don’t get me wrong, it definitely still serves the very specific purpose of getting us off our feet, whether to rest or to help us focus on tasks. However, the chair has also become an expression of art and personal style, a decorating tool to define areas throughout a house, and reflect how we live in our homes. With all the different styles and options on the market, the features of a good chair are ones that balance esthetics, comfort and quality. Here are some things to pay attention to. Function (and style)
at homeA
Before you can consider a chair’s esthetic attributes, think about its function. Will you be sitting on it for short or extended periods of time? Will you be engaged in any activities while seated? In terms of the space itself, is it casual or formal in nature? How many people do you need to seat? Is it a high-traffic area exposed to dirt, wear and tear? by JENNIFER BACKSTEIN
When planning your space, keep in mind the area around your furnishings. In the living room, I like to leave 18 inches between the sofa and coffee table, or about 36 inches between armchairs, sofa and loveseat, to encourage conversation. If your seating is for watching television, I recommend a gap of approximately seven feet. tip:

A chair has become an expression of art and personal style, a decorating tool to define areas throughout the home
Ottomans and cubes are very versatile and are a great option for extra seating or surfaces in a pinch. Pushed up to a coffee table or beside the fireplace, an ottoman makes a great seat. We use them often in our projects and like to top them with a tray to double as a side table. And if you think ahead and choose something with integrated storage, you’ve also got a place to put extra pillows or blankets.
Now, consider the style of seating that will best meet those needs. Your seating options run the gamut from chairs, loveseats, sofas and sectionals, to less conventional pieces such as stools, benches and ottomans. What about upholstery? Should it have a back or armrests? What about the depth and angle of the seat? When evaluating for comfort, online shopping simply can’t give you the insight you’d get from seeing it (and sitting in it) in person. Construction (and price) When shopping for seating, you’ll undoubtedly come across a wide range of products and price points. Generally, you get what you pay for and quality (think comfort and durability) is often reflected in a higher price. What’s behind that price difference? The joinery, the construction of the seat and whether it’s coil, web, down or foam, the quality of the materials and upholstery – these all factor into the final price. Measure (and measure again) You know what they say – measure twice, buy once. When buying any big-ticket items for your home, don’t rely on the “eyeball” method for measurements. This is especially important now, given the reality of supply chain issues and the resulting delays on delivery. Ensure the pieces you’re buying will fit your space –and through the doorways, hallways, stairwells and if you live in a condo, theHavingelevator!afloorplan in hand can also be extremely helpful when shopping for large-scale seating, such as a sofa or sectional. This will give you a view of how the piece, and its scale in relation to the rest of the space and everything else in it, may impact the natural flow of traffic and sight lines to windows and other focal points, like the fireplace. Research is key As you can see, there’s a lot that goes into choosing just the right seating for your application, your space and your… rear end. Do your research, make a list and discuss your options with a designer or furniture salesperson. We have lots of experience, we know what works, and can we bring some new ideas to the table – or in this case, the chair!

The completed project was unveiled on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. CHBA – Edmonton Region President, James McTeer, and Little Warriors Be Brave Ranch Clinical Director, Dr. Wanda Polzin Holman, spoke at the event.
The Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Edmonton Region (CHBA-ER) revealed the efforts of the Reno Project completed for the Little Warriors Be Brave Ranch.
“Each year, the Association’s Renovator Committee partners with an organization in need to give new life to its spaces,” said Laura Bruno, CEO of CHBA – Edmonton Region. “We are honoured to partner with Little Warriors to renovate outdoor spaces at its Be Brave Ranch facility and we hope that the children, families, and hard-working staff will be positively impacted by this work.”

F rom dishes and small appliances, to pantry items, cleaning supplies and knickknacks, the kitchen houses a million things, with about as many places to store them all. The table, counter and the top of the fridge aren’t among them, and those bins and baskets can only go so far. So, where to put it all?
The Island This is the focus of most kitchens today, due to its central positioning in the room and its many functions. Whether it’s used to slice and dice food, to dish it out, or for entertaining and dining, the island is ground zero for much of the action that happens in the kitchen.
From a designer’s perspective, storage is a critical part of every plan. It is the first step to creating a stylish and more important a functional kitchen. Here are three areas in your kitchen to amp up your storage, and examples of how I did it in this kitchen project (pictured). Cabinets Let’s start here, since these will eat up the biggest chunk of your kitchen budget, and account for a considerable visual portion of the picture as well. From a use-of-space perspective, I always recommend adding extended uppers to maximize every inch. Typically, the area between the cabinet tops and ceiling only collects dust. Why not put that extra foot of vertical space to good use, with an additional cabinet shelf running the perimeter of your kitchen? While it’s a bit harder to reach, this area provides tons of valuable storage space for occasional or seasonal items. Your lower cabinets can also be customized with custom drawers, shelves and racks, stored easily on hand, neatly and efficiently. From an aesthetic perspective, extended uppers have a polished, streamlined look, and they don’t even have to run all the way up to the ceiling. In this kitchen (pictured) we left a gap above the cabinets, which became a nice visual detail. The cabinets include a combination of solid and glass doors, adding further visual interest and a lovely way to display select kitchen collections. Matching solid panels clad the appliances, giving the space a sleek look.

Your island takes up a significant portion of your kitchen, with lots of potential storage space that can be customized to meet your unique needs. Consider first how you will be using the island, then ensure it’s well-equipped to meet those needs.
For example, if you intend to use it for food prep, your cabinets and shelves should accommodate cutting boards, knives, bowls, spices, and anything else you might need for the task. Keep in mind that if you plan to include a sink, cooktop or a pull-out trash bin in your island, those will reduce the amount of storage space available under the counter. Weigh your needs and wants, and decide what takes priority. Furniture This is possibly the simplest way to add storage to your kitchen, and probably the most cost-efficient, too. Kitchen furniture, aside from the obligatory table and chairs, doesn’t get enough credit – or enough use. Non-permanent pieces such as a side board or shelfs can help keep extra dishes or small appliances, while adding style without the commitment. Before you buy, ensure your kitchen is big enough, with ample space to move freely around it.
The kitchen takes a lot of heat, particularly if it’s not cutting it storagewise. A kitchen redesign or renovation is the perfect opportunity to evaluate your needs and wishes, and “bake” them right into the bones of the space. Work with a design firm like us to put those plans into action.

Did you know that a shade tree will provide us with lower temperatures of between five and 12 degrees Celsius than if we were out in the blazing sunshine? No wonder we migrate naturally to the shade to read a book, have a picnic or take a nap. Trees not only provides shade; the moisture that they transpire has a cooling effect. A shady deal Now is the time to begin thinking about what goes on under your trees and on the north side of your house, where you will find some interesting opportunities to plant a ‘shade’ garden.Thefollowing is our short list of favourites for dappled shade, plants that prefer a sun/shade mix. They generally do not like the hot, dry midafternoon sun.

Now, about those shade trees If you have trees on your property that were planted within the last three years, watering is of critical importance this time of year. A mature 20-metre-high maple tree transpires over 500 litres of water on a hot day. That is why it is important to get water on its roots this time of year. Apply water to the root zone of your young and mature trees by placing a hose at the base of the tree with just a trickle of water coming out at the end of it. Leave it there for three or four hours. The water needs to seep deeply into the root zone for it to be of any benefit.
electrified in their intensity. They like to grow in an open, peaty soil. Once they dry out, they do not rehydrate well, so to prevent drying, be sure to mulch with five cm of shredded cedar bark.
Rhododendrons Rhodies, as they are affectionately known in the business, have a special place in the shade garden. They love an acid soil, which is opposite to the alkaline stuff most of us put up, if you live in Southern Ontario. Always plant your rhododendrons in an open, sandy soil mixed with finely ground-up pine bark, about 30 per cent by volume. Add about four tablespoons of garden sulfur every six weeks throughout the summer and early fall to help acidify the soil. Keep in mind that you are not fertilizing them per se; you are changing the pH of the soil. For fool-proof garden performance, we recommend the winter tough ‘PJM’ varieties if you live in Ottawa. Boxwood (Buxus) Here is a broad-leafed evergreen that performs very well in Ottawa and Montreal. Since boxwood is an evergreen, treat it as such with a humus-based soil of peat or compost, and fertilize with an evergreen food such as 30-10-10 every month or so until the middle of the summer. Check out the many boxwood hybrids that have been introduced over the years. You will get a deeper colour and more finely textured foliage with these versus the original version of Korean Boxwood.

Oregon Grape (Mahonia aquifolium) Native to B.C., this plant features holly-like leaves that remain on the plant all winter and are replaced each spring as new growth occurs. They have a delightful yellow flower in spring and a dense, shrubby growth habit. Oregon grape matures to about one metre or so high and equally wide. We like it best when planted on the fringe of a hardwood bush or under the shade of tall deciduous trees and shrubs.
