Autumn is in the air, and after a sizzling hot summer, cooler temperatures are a welcome relief. And though things have simmered down weather-wise, the opposite is true for Alberta’s home renovation, decor and design market, where things continue to be hotter than ever.
According to Royal LePage, the two highest searched cities on its website by homebuyers are Edmonton and Calgary. With relatively more affordable prices here than anywhere else, it will likely remain that way for the next few years.
Whether you are a new homeowner in the province or have been in the same home for decades, it’s always
fun — and sometimes necessary — to find fresh ideas to beautify your home. This is where the upcoming Calgary and Edmonton Fall Home shows come in handy.
We shine a light on both events and talk with a couple of mainstage presenters. One is excited to demonstrate how to turn your home into an Airbnb and the other is equally passionate about designing your home in an environmentally friendly way.
As usual, there’s Salina’s Corner, this time extolling the virtues of shopping local for all your fall home decor.
With its changing colours, fall is a favourite season for many, and for the DIY set, that certainly brings a lot of inspiration. Look inside and see how.

CITY SERIES
MODERN ZERO-CLEARANCE DESIGNER FIREPLACES
Splish splash in style
When I was young, my family and I lived in a heritage house with a dark green bathroom. I remember with fondness the original claw foot tub I spent so much time splashing around in. My parents had created a vanity out of a burled walnut antique sideboard and capped off the charming look with a gold gilded mirror. It wasn’t a huge bathroom, but it had character. Maybe that’s why I enjoy creating bathrooms that have a personality and that are both stylish and practical.
Throughout my 25-plus years as a designer, I have seen many bathroomdecor mistakes in homes. I’m talking everything from carpet in bathrooms (this should have NEVER been allowed!), dark oak country vanities and monstersized decks for soaker jet tubs, to super tiny kit showers. Renovating bathrooms has been a constant in my career and I
have found it’s easy for this busy room to have a positive impact on our daily life if we make sure it is organized, has natural light, a fun personality, and exudes a level of luxury.
Here are a few simple steps to keep in mind if you want to have a bathroom with “personality”:
1| Use every inch of space. Storage is the key to keeping a busy bathroom tidy, so be sure to map out your room to maximize each zone.
2| Invest in lighting. Good lighting in a bathroom goes a really long way. Generally, I install vanity lights, pot lights and sconces to ensure the space is illuminated well.
3| Experimentwithcolouror wallpaper . I am a fan of keeping tile classic but consider amping up your bathroom with a bright wall colour, some patterned paper or even a bold custom shower curtain to make the room feel luxurious.

(Bath)room with a view?
Upgrades you didn’t know you needed
Kitchens get all the glory, but we all know the most valuable space in every home is the bathroom. Be it a functional main floor powder room, a well-appointed shared bathroom or the coveted ensuite, the bathroom is the space that works the hardest. Styles and trends in finishes change every year, so it can get confusing deciding what’s best for your situation.
Here are some of the best bathroom upgrades you didn’t know you needed (but will immediately realize that you do).
Solar venting skylights
A skylight does a number of things besides provide natural light. It can be opened and closed automatically with solar power, allowing for freshair ventilation and protection against
unexpected rain events. Skylights provide more security and privacy than a window, and can be quite large, even when in close proximity to neighbours, something a wall window cannot easily do. Built-in blinds and screens can also be added features.
Curbless showers
Aside from looking really sexy, curbless showers are truly functional.
Slips, trips and falls in bathrooms are the cause of 234,000 injuries in the U.S. annually, accounting for more than one-third of bathroom injuries (per the CDC). Eliminating thresholds helps to reduce that risk, while making the place look super clean.
Grab bars and benches
Let’s face it, we are all getting older. Grab bars (even if only roughed in) will eventually help everyone. Benches also come in handy for shaving or relaxing in your steamy shower. They provide function and safety and can be quite stylish.
Niches
Hide or display your lotions and potions in a concealed or feature niche. Razors, loofas and the rest can all have their place in a professional and clean stone-lined inset.
Heated floors
Electric or gas-boiler fired, there are fewer luxuries that have a bigger impact on comfort from November through March, than a heated floor.
Moisture-sensing fans
Hey mouldy shower caulking – be gone! Save power while avoiding the casualty of not turning the fan on or off during and after use.
Washlets (bidet)
Remember the COVID-19 run on toilet paper? Be prepared for the next great toiletry hoarding event by saying goodbye to paper and hello to a warm water spray and blow dry that will leave you feeling daisy fresh. Some models come with heated
automatic seats, foot warmers, music and lighting. Let’s see your Cottonelle compete with that.
Night light
There is nothing worse than turning on the vanity interrogation lights in the middle of the night on a trip to the loo. Motion-sensing kickplate lighting can provide soft ambient illumination for safety on those late-night bathroom trips. The low light will help ensure you can fall back asleep quickly after.
Back-lit heated mirrors
No more foggy mirrors and “hag” lighting – imagine! Say yes to convenience and a perfect vanity glow with a heated and back-lit mirror. These can be motion activated and ensure you will always be able to see your best angles in the best light.
Stock vanities versus custom
If you can plan the space in a way to fit a stock vanity (typically two feet to eight feet in 12-inch increments), you will save a lot of money over custom-built. Opt for full extension drawers with drain notch-outs for improved storage access. Most come fully equipped with a stone counter and integrated sink, which saves you time and money versus templating, fabricating and assembling all the custom parts yourself.

Bathroom bliss
THE EXPERTS AT MOEN OFFER FIVE TIPS TO EFFORTLESSLY TRANSFORM ANY BATHROOM
Maximize style and performance
When refreshing your bathroom, never compromise on style and performance. Seek out fixtures and accessories that look appealing and function exceptionally well.
Find cohesion with collections
Choosing a collection to update your bathroom rather than shopping for individual pieces is the easiest way to refresh the space quickly. It also saves time and effort that would otherwise be spent searching for individual items to form a cohesive look. This approach simplifies the decisionmaking process and ensures your bathroom upgrade is successful, even if you’re not a design expert.
Be brave with black
The colour black provides a bold, dramatic finish that can give any room new depth, heightening both classic and contemporary designs. When incorporated into your bathroom, black fixtures add an element of modern sophistication.
Create tech-savvy spaces
Smart-home products are all the rage. From home assistants to automated lighting, homes continue to get smarter, and it doesn’t stop in the bathroom. Embracing technology in the bathroom can enhance your daily routine in that often-used room.
Seek out comfort
Considering the amount of time you spend in the bathroom, it’s essential to prioritize your comfort, as well as family members and guests. Adding special touches such as a bidet can elevate the space and ther overall experience.
ADD HOME SAFETY to your renovation checklist
If you’re renovating or redoing any room in your home, don’t forget important products that can help protect you and your family’s precious moments together: Your smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, as well as your fire extinguishers. Easy to install and upgrade, smoke and CO alarms help provide early warning in the event of a home emergency. Here are some safety tips to help you keep your home and family better protected this fall and beyond.
ENSURE PROPER ALARM PLACEMENT
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends installing alarms on every level of your home, including the basement, and inside every bedroom. Because smoke rises, be sure to install alarms high on the wall or on the ceiling. Don’t install alarms near doors, windows or ducts, where drafts may interfere with their operation. Be sure to place alarms at least 4.5 metres away from cooking appliances to minimize false alarms.
TEST AND MAINTAIN YOUR ALARMS
Regularly check your alarms to help ensure they are working properly. Simply press the test button and wait for the alarm to sound. If an alarm is battery-operated, batteries should be replaced every six months. Remember that alarms do not last forever and should be replaced every 10 years.
UPGRADE TO 10-YEAR SEALED BATTERY ALARMS
For added convenience and protection, when it’s time to replace your existing alarms or add protection to your home, upgrade to the First Alert 10-Year Sealed Battery Combination Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm. The 2-in-1 alarm is equipped with a sealed 10-year battery, eliminating the need for battery replacements and late-night battery chirps for a decade.
BE EQUIPPED TO FIGHT SMALL FIRES
In the event a fire breaks out in your home, be sure you are equipped with fire extinguishers located in easily accessible places, like under the kitchen sink or mounted on the wall. If the fire is small enough for you to manage on your own, use the PASS technique to put the fire out: Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism. Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire. Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly. Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side.
In the event of a larger fire, evacuate your home immediately and call 911.
PREPARE AND PRACTICE YOUR ESCAPE PLAN
Gather together everyone in your household and identify two exits out of each room, including doors and windows, and assign a meeting spot outside and at a safe distance from your home. The NFPA recommends practicing your plan at least twice a year to help ensure that every family member is prepared in the event of a home emergency.

CONSIDER YOUR BATHROOM STYLE
Start by considering the overall style and design of your bathroom. Whether it’s modern, traditional, minimalist or eclectic, your accessories should
complement the existing decor. Choose accessories that harmonize with your bathroom’s colour scheme and design elements.
FOCUS ON FUNCTIONALITY
While esthetics are important, don’t overlook functionality. Assess your daily needs and select accessories that serve a practical purpose. For example, towel racks, soap dispensers and shower caddies should make your daily routine more convenient.
QUALITY MATTERS
Invest in high-quality bathroom accessories that are durable and built to last. Look for materials such as stainless steel, acrylic or granite, as they are known for their durability. Quality accessories will save you money in the long run.
THINK ABOUT SPACE
Be mindful of the available space in your bathroom. Choose accessories that fit comfortably within your bathroom’s layout without cluttering the area. Wall-mounted accessories can save space and create a clean, organized look.
Remember, bathroom accessories are the finishing touches that can elevate the overall look and functionality of your space. Take your time to choose ones that not only meet your needs, but also enhance the beauty of your bathroom.

Natural elegance
by SARA DUCK photos ELAINE FANCY PHOTOGRAPHYDesigner Michelle Thompson had a clear vision for her recent whole-home project. “The design concept was to deliver an elevated transitional feel with organic materials and harness the property’s stunning surroundings,” she explains.
Go with the flow
Thompson created flow by carrying an earthy colour palette throughout the home and repeating some finishes and patterns (such as unlacquered brass, diamonds and archways) on each floor. She also incorporated rich wood,
bold veining, limestone tiles, and linen fabric onto surfaces to add texture and dimension to the overall natural vibe of the home.
Windows on the world
“The home basks in gorgeous natural light and beautiful surroundings,” Thompson notes, revealing her strategy of maximizing the vista. Windows became her canvas, evidenced by the bold choice in the kitchen to ditch upper cabinets in favour of expansive windows along the range wall, as well as crafting windows in every bedroom, bathroom and soaring up all three flights of stairs.
A home renovation project inspired by nature and an organic, earthy palette
An indoor/outdoor synergy
Functionality was the driving force behind every design choice within this family-oriented abode. Elements such as a dedicated primary suite on a distinct floor, a sprawling mudroom, abundant storage solutions, and the inclusion of expansive 12-ft. full bi-fold doors were mindfully chosen to enhance the home’s practicality and indoor-outdoor synergy.
A perfect transition
And where there’s design, there are also challenges and in this home makeover, it was the focal wall in the great room. “We wanted to create some distinction between the great room and the adjacent kitchen, while still keeping the look cohesive,” explains Thompson. To achieve harmony between the two rooms, for the built-ins in the great room, she used cabinet fronts that resembled the ones in
the kitchen. “From the arch details to the custom fireplace and cabinets on the built-in, this space turned out so beautifully, and it’s a perfect transition from the kitchen.” With nature and functionality in mind, Thompson created a home that capitalizes on natural light and has an innovative floorplan that addresses the needs and wants of a growing family.

Articulated modern design codes allow a couple to artfully downsize from a large family home to a condo
Elevatedliving
by LAYTH RAOOF • photos STEPHANI BUCHMANThe project? To assist a Toronto couple who wanted to downsize from their multi-level family home to a condo. The result? A thoughtfully designed space that encompassed artfully curated decor and made-to-order cabinetry that followed an elegant, sophisticated yet approachable modern look.
Letting nature in
The initial design began by taking into consideration the expansive window elevation overlooking and framing a
serene vantage point of treetops from a nearby park. The flow of the treeline was the inspiration behind sourcing furniture with a unified wood finish, with some pieces expressed in comfy, organic sculptural forms, juxtaposed with ones with clean square lines.
A modern vibe
Natural touches can be included in other ways aside from wood. For example, to complete the picture, wool-blended off-white linear pleated drapery panels and a wool area rug with a diagonal line weave pattern
were added. The large-scale pieces of proportioned single-function furniture set in a monochromatic palette were the specific design codes used to enhance the space’s modern esthetic.
Three-dimensionality
Seemingly floating above the dining table, the gracefully folded sumo-sized and uniformly finished matte silver metal light pendant fixture is an artful gallery moment for a sophisticated look. But beyond its elegance, its reflection and that of the dining room in the oversized round mirror on the nearby wall provides an added sparkle to the space. The use of threedimensional forms is not only inherent in the furniture pieces, but also illustrates how all three dimensions of the interior are utilized – the floors, walls and ceiling – to optimize design to complete a space.
Design challenge
The main interior design challenge was to neutralize the off-balanced fireplace elevation where a duct from one side of the gas fireplace runs across the ceiling to vent outside. To do this, we hid the duct within one of the now visually balanced floorto-ceiling cabinets, finished with integrated full-height pulls.
Each cabinet now offers ample storage, fulfilling the wish of the client, who downsized from a substantial home and desired more storage than the condo originally offered. The central fireplace feature flanked by the symmetrical cabinet doors is adorned with a single monolithic slab of Canadian-mined Algonquin stone, a selection that is a nod to the client’s interest in Canadian art and adds a unique personalized layer to connect the client to the space.
The flow of the treeline was the inspiration behind sourcing furniture with a unified wood finish
BeforeA full-height mirror panel on the window side of the millwork makes a decorative architectural statement and also acts as a filler margin to allow for centering the overall millwork and furniture compositions to the room. This is also where the drapes will rest against so as not to get in the way of the adjacent operable cabinet door when in use.
The repetition of the full-height vertical lines in the millwork draws the eyes up, accentuating the ceiling height and also subliminally dialing up the modernity factor by way of scale exaggeration and visual tempo, orchestrated through a considered measurement rhythm sequence. Such thoughtful design details not only maintain the integrity of the elements invested in the interior design, but also enhance the sophistication of the signature design language where style intersects with substance.

on it
by BREN PETRUNICK photos MIKE CHAJECKISnuggle up in style in a bedroom designed for comfort and warmth
While you might consider key furnishings such as a bed or dressing table to be the focal point in the bedroom, it’s really the fabrics that take centre stage. Materials are a unifying feature in any room, but they garner a special significance in the bedroom, as they are both a design element and a functional necessity. Heading into the cooler months is when we feel the impact of bedroom fabrics the most.
As temperatures begin to plummet and hibernation mode sets in, we are tempted to spend more time nestled in our bed. Here are three tips if you’re shopping for sheets, plush pillowcases and cold-weather covers.
Seasonal switch-up
The transition between seasons is an excellent signal to swap out your bedding. A refreshed bed scape will create a comfortable, cosy nest for sleeping, no matter what Mother Nature has in store for us. This is a great time to pack away your lightweight cottons and linens, and dress your bed in heavier, heat-retaining fabrics.
COTTON FLANNEL
If you tend to reach for flannel shirts and pajamas when the temperatures drop, flannel sheets might be right up your alley. This soft, mid-weight cotton has a fuzzy finish that comes from brushing or a loose weave. Flannel packs an extra punch of fluff to keep you toasty through the cooler nights ahead.
EGYPTIAN COTTON
If you want to surround yourself in warmth and luxury, Egyptian cotton is for you. Widely hailed as the most luxurious bedding fabric around, Egyptian cotton is the common name for the extra long staple (ELS) cotton produced in Egypt’s unique climate, where cotton fibres grow longer than other cotton varieties.
With an unsurpassed reputation for exceptional quality, Egyptian cotton yields sheets with superior softness, durability and breathability. One touch of this exquisite fabric and you won’t give the higher price tag a second thought.
Size matters
Selecting bedsheets that are the correct size for your mattress is critical to comfort. Loose sheets can become a tangled nightmare while you sleep, while sheets that are too tight put you in the middle of a wrestling match every time you wash your linens and make your bed. Also, mattresses come in a range of depths and dimensions and selecting the right size sheets can feel like a guessing game.
Layer up
Dressing your bed for cooler seasons doesn’t stop at sheets, pillowcases and a comforter. Layering is an effective way to give visual and physical warmth to a room. Add a mattress topper, extra pillows and throws in a variety of textures and textiles such as velvet, wool and chunky knits for more heat. Don’t forget about plush area rugs underfoot and treatments for the windows. Heavier, coordinated drapery on your windows helps trap in heat and block out light, so you can hibernate in total comfort, while creating a cohesive esthetic.
pro-tip:
Before you go shopping, measure your mattress depth. Standard sheet sets might not fit mattresses that are higher than 14 inches, and include your mattress pad or topper in your measurement, as the additional thickness needs to be considered. There are three common height ranges for fitted sheets: Standard, deep pocket, and extra-deep pocket.

A bathroom transformation with a light and airy touch
Softserene AND
by SARA DUCK photos VALERIE SCHNEIDERDesigner Charlene Threatful and her team at Lush Interiors embarked on a mission to transform a dim, cluttered bathroom into a serene, storagesmart haven. The project’s muse? An
enchanting aqua artisan tile, which helped inspire the project’s overall material and colour palette.
The shower and tub layout were revamped to optimize the limited space while maintaining openness. “The shower now runs along the back wall of the ensuite, allowing us to provide
his and her showers, where each person has a large amount of storage with a ledge for each of them in their respective spaces,” says Threatful.
“Because the client requested lowmaintenance finishes, we used a large format tile that we wrapped around the bottom half of the shower and
extended into the tub surround. We kept the details calm and quiet, so that the aqua tile could take centre stage.”
Grout lines were kept minimal and by using the same quartz material on the ledges and bench in the shower, cleanup is a breeze. The glossy hex chosen for the shower floor is also easy to clean, and the grout provides enough anti-slip grip for the large shower.
“We opted for a micro shaker cabinet in a rift oak to keep it from feeling too feminine, and it grounds the vanity and adds a touch of warmth and texture,” says Threatful. The large, floated vanity illuminates the floor with under-cabinet lighting, keeping the feeling of openness. Luxurious gold details and fixtures were used to harmonize with the cabinets, patinarich floor tiles, and crystal ceiling light, giving a sophisticated look.
When it came to keeping items organized, a balance of functionality
and elegance was achieved through different storage solutions. “We utilized drawers with organizers rather than doors, which provided ample storage without the use of upper cabinetry, also keeping it light and airy,” says Threatful. Towel hooks were incorporated into the shower glass for easy access, eliminating the need for towel bars.
Lighting is paramount in any bathroom renovation, so the goal was to harness as much natural light as possible. The shower’s redesign allowed daylight to stream through its large, opaque window, emitting a welcoming warmth. Essential vanity lighting was created with three grand sconces, and a dimmable chandelier over the bathtub sporting eight candelabra bulbs sets any desired mood. On gloomy days, two shower pot lights step in, ensuring radiance without the need of bright window light.

Lenia two-drawer NIGHTSTAND in walnut. $599. article.comSelecting a sink and faucet for your bathroom
Perfect pairings
by TRISH KNIGHT AND NICOLE VARGA • photos JANIS NICOLAYYour bathroom sink is more than just a functional fixture; it’s a key design element that helps influence and define the overall esthetic of your space. With an array of sink styles available at various price points, it’s essential to consider your home’s style, the users of the room, and your personal preferences when selecting a sink. Beyond the sink itself, successfully pairing it with the right faucet and cabinet style can enhance your bathroom’s functionality and visual appeal.
UNDERMOUNT SINK Versatile and practical
An undermount sink is the workhorse in the world of bathroom sinks. Ideal for high-traffic areas such as kids’ bathrooms and ensuites, it is favoured for its easy cleaning and durability. Another key advantage is its esthetic versatility, complementing a range of home styles from traditional to contemporary.
This type of sink pairs well with a white quartz or light-coloured marble countertop for a seamless and cohesive look. Beneath the countertop, a classic vanity cabinet style is a good option. To maximize storage space, consider roll-out racks or drawers designed around the plumbing fixtures. With an undermount sink, you can easily choose between counter-mounted or wall-mounted faucets, since the sink style is versatile and boasts a classic design that looks nice with a variety of design choices.
VESSEL SINK An elegant focal point
A vessel sink is akin to jewellery for your bathroom. This decorative piece is available in different materials, including ceramic, glass and stone. While a vessel sink can enhance a primary ensuite, it is often chosen for powder rooms and guest bathrooms due to its intricate design that requires a bit more attention during cleaning.
Wall-mounted faucets are a popular choice, with the faucet height ideally positioned six to eight inches above the sink’s edge.
Installing a wall-mounted faucet requires careful planning, including locating rough-in valves in advance. While this choice adds sophistication, it also comes with additional costs. In a compact bathroom, consider a semi-recessed vessel sink. This allows for a shallower counter/ cabinet while accommodating the faucet, which optimizes space without compromising on style.
INTEGRATED SINK Luxurious, seamless design
An integrated sink is the epitome of luxury, often crafted from natural stone or quartz. It seamlessly blends into the countertop, offering a contemporary look that oozes elegance and sophistication. It also allows for easy cleaning, so regular maintenance is a breeze. However, incorporating an integrated sink demands advanced planning with a designer and contractor to ensure the installation is done correctly.
If you prefer esthetics over storage, an integrated sink can replace traditional cabinetry. Opt for a thick leading edge on the countertop and a floating shelf below to create a minimalistic yet stunning bathroom ambience.
FAUCET PLACEMENT Influence on sink style
Where the faucet is placed can significantly impact which sink style you choose and the cabinetry layout. For example, to prevent splashing and potential water damage, it’s crucial to consider factors such as the faucet height, depth and position. For wall-mounted faucets, the risk of splashing increases when the water hits the drain directly. Changing the faucet’s position after installation can be costly, so it is important to plan thoroughly beforehand. To avoid splashing issues, analyze the sink’s shape and depth in relation to the faucet’s water stream.
designtip
When shopping for an undermount sink, pay attention to the slope of the bowl to the drain and the sink’s depth, which will impact how functional it is for its intended uses.
MANY OPTIONS
Selecting the right bathroom sink and faucet demands a thoughtful approach that encompasses the overall look of your home, your functional needs and your design preferences. There are plenty of options, each offering unique
benefits that can transform your bathroom into a sanctuary of style and functionality. Some forethought and a little professional guidance from a designer can certainly ensure a functional, stylish design that will elevate your bathroom experience.

ARE STRANGE NOISES AND SPOOKY OCCURRENCES KEEPING YOU UP AT NIGHT? WHO YOU GONNA CALL?
Haunted house or home repair?
by MARLENE EISNERHalloween is just around the corner and with it, thoughts turn to everything spooky and supernatural. If you’ve been lying awake at night wondering if random noises or that flickering wall sconce means your house is haunted, we hear you. Read on to find out if those strange events lead you to call a renovator, or a ghost buster!
Things that go bump in the night (or
day)
Mark Rason is an expert DIYer and self-taught woodworker and carpenter. Owner and operator of Remarkable Woodworks in Toronto, he is also the resident Renovations Ambassador for the Toronto Home shows. We asked Rason to comment on some of the ways paranormal experts say ghosts try to communicate with homeowners, and what it might mean for you.
Flickering lights, lights that don’t work or dim periodically
Rason says like ghost sightings, flickering lights often happen in older homes, and that it’s not a surprise. Nor is it due to a resident poltergeist stirring up trouble.
[THE FIX
“An easy solution for the water tank moaning would be to vacuum out where there is a buildup of dust or use a sprayer to clean things out,” says Rason. “Howling is usually from a drafty window. A quick fix is to take the trim off the window and look for holes. Although it’s tricky to use, if it were me, I would fill the cracks with spray foam, but if you are not experienced with how spray foam can expand, it could be scary. Or, I would use bag insulation with an R value of 14 (R14), then put the trim back on and reseal it with new caulking.”
Cold spots
MARK RASON
“This is often typical of older homes that have knob and tube wiring, or it can occur because of a loose connection.” He says lights that don’t work or dim occasionally can be caused by connections shorting each other out in wall sockets, switches and older homes with spliced wiring.
[THE FIX
“I highly recommend hiring a certified electrician who has insurance and who can open up the walls, to look into it,” says Rason, adding that for this type of work, trusting a handyman or doing it yourself is not recommended.
Crashing or banging sounds in the walls
While you probably won’t find a mischievous spirit causing the problem, you may not like the alternative.
“Crashing or banging sounds in the walls could be as simple as having rodents, usually rats or mice,” says Rason, “but it can also be squirrels or raccoons, especially if the noises are repetitive and coming from a specific area. Rattling noises can come from pipes, knocking noises from a raccoon, and scratching from a bat — or any animal with long nails.”
[THE FIX
Rason recommends inspecting the outside of your home to see if there are any entry points such as holes or lose shingles, although they may be hard to see. Call an exterminator to get rid of the rodents and if you do find a hole, make sure the animal is gone and then fill the hole with spray foam.
Moaning, groaning or howling sounds
While these sounds might turn your thoughts to the grieving spirit of a murdered soul, the answer, according to Rason, is less spooky, if a bit unexpected.
“If I heard moaning or groaning, I would look at my hot water tank. Those things tend to moan and groan when there is built-up dust.” Howling, he says, typically comes from a drafty window.
To a ghost hunter, random cold spots in a home could mean a resident ghost is draining heat from a spot to grab energy to manifest. Can this be true? According to Rason, although cold spots are common, it usually means there is a problem with the heating system. “A cold spot happens because of the way the air is circulating in your home, and where the vents are placed,” he says. Too little or no insulation in the attic could also be the culprit.
[THE FIX
The best sulution is to upgrade to a smart thermostat. “If you already have wiring for a regular thermostat, this is an easy DIY project. If you don’t have a thermostat, I recommend hiring an electrician to see if there is a way to install a smart thermostat to an older house,” says Rason.
Unexplained smells
Sometimes, an unsavoury scent seems to slowly seep into your space without an obvious source. Smelly spirit? It’s unlikely. According to Rason, if it’s a burning smell, it could be coming from wires and it can also be from dust.
[THE FIX
“I would look at your dryer vents, inside and outside the house where the vent comes out,” he says. “Fall is a good time to inspect the interior and exterior dryer vents. Unexplained smells can also be a sign of dirty ducts, so you should look to get them cleaned.”
Protect your home from unwanted spirits
Desta Ostapyk is the owner and principal designer of Design by Desta and is certified in Feng Shui. She has been seeing spirits since the age of five and is a “huge believer” in the paranormal. Ostapyk offers up these tips if you are looking to decorate your space to discourage spirits from coming into your home.
You’re not welcome here
“Firstly, I don’t believe you should be inviting spirits into your home, and that starts with your front door,” she explains, adding that it applies to any exterior door that is used as a main entrance. For example, if you have an outdoor mat, keep it simple without any wording, especially the word WELCOME. “Stay away from that,” she says.
From a Feng Shui perspective, having a clear window in the front door is also a big no. “It’s never ideal to have a completely clear window in a [front] door, but if you must have a window, then make sure it’s frosted or ribbed glass. This adds texture and distorts the glass. If you have that feeling that someone is watching you, having blurred windows provides an extra level of privacy.”
A bright, uncluttered space
Ostapyk says in terms of the spirit world and entities, they tend to latch onto people who are depressed or sad and those elements play into our home, too. “A house with lighting and that is not cluttered sends out a happier vibe. Lots of windows let in natural light, and I think mirrors are really good — it’s energy and also helps move light around.”
When it comes to your bedroom, Ostapyk suggests making your bed every day and taking care to keep the space clean and orderly.
“A good takeaway is that it’s important not to store things under your bed because it blocks energy. However,
tipTo ward off unwelcome spirits and bring in positive energy, Ostapyk recommends placing specific crystals and/or stones strategically around your home “You can add a piece of black tourmaline or obsidian near the front door, above or beside it. These are highly protective stones, with obsidian known for its ability to block, absorb or transform negative energy and anything related to emotional trauma or energy.”
if you have to because you lack storage space, make sure it looks clean and it’s balanced.”
Finally, incorporating natural elements such as wood furniture and plants help ground a space and bring life into a home. And if you really don’t want to invite a ghost in, Ostapyk warns: “Be cautious of bringing items into your home, especially anything used, such as antiques or items you find on the side of the road. Don’t dabble with an Ouija board. People should never have it in their homes and never play with it.”
CORINE CAREY
From the time B.C. native Corine Carey was three years old, she had experiences that could not be explained. She would see ghostly images and hear and know things that she couldn’t possibly know. Fast-forward into adulthood and now she and her sister, Leanne Sallenback, and friend Kelly Ireland, operate Beyond the Haunting Investigations, to help people get rid of ghosts and spirits in their home.
We asked Carey if a home renovation can trigger paranormal activity. “I would never say every time you do a renovation there will be an event, but it can happen,” she says. “We’ve heard stories of people hearing footsteps, tools being moved or hidden, ladders being moved.”
But can a simple room re-do really disturb a spirit? Carey tells this story: “We were called to a private residence where the owner told us she had just redecorated the home and since then, she has been seeing a shadow figure walking up and down the hall and standing at the door to her bedroom. She called us in. The team went for a home visit to feel the energy in the room and see if we could pick up anything. When we tried to communicate, we instantly felt the presence of an elderly woman. We saw knitting, needles in a drawer, and the old woman seemed very agitated.”
They learned the homeowner had purchased a bedroom side table at a vintage store. When she turned the table over, she found a hidden drawer on the bottom and inside, there were knitting needles and unfinished pieces. “The homeowner was freaked out. She took the table back to the store,” says Carey. “The antique store found the owners of the table, who said their grandmother had just died, and it was her knitting. The homeowner gave back the knitting, and the ghost was gone.”
Top 10 ways ghosts try to communicate with homeowners

• Cold spots in your home for no reason/abrupt temperature changes
• Unexplained electrical or plumbing issues (flickering lights, taps turning on and off)

• You feel you are being watched and can’t shake it
• You see shadow figures or movement out of the corner of your eyes
• Strange unexplained smells
• Your pets are acting strangely for no reason (avoiding certain spots, scared)

Excitement grows among
Alberta’s DIYers
by PEPPER RODRIGUEZFall is in the air. Leaves are turning, the weather’s just a little bit chillier, and pumpkin spice everything is everywhere. But for the DIY crowd, nothing is more exciting than the return of the Calgary and Edmonton fall home shows.
Alberta’s home market is just zooming along, and the number of new homeowners in the province continues to rise. The real estate research website wowa.ca indicates that there has been a more than 10 per cent increase in home sales in the province over the past year.
Whether you are one of those new homeowners, have lived in your home for decades, or are still looking for that special house, fall home shows are the perfect platform to visit for home design advice, home savings and lifestyle tips and the proper tools and materials to turn your house into a dream home.
FIX-IT For the CROWD If you live in Calgary
Colleen Pastoor is positively giddy about her first appearance at the Calgary fall home show. She is a 10year veteran blogger and author of the Lemon Thistle blog, where she writes about home renovation, design and home improvement tips. She says she is eager to share her expertise with the audience on the main stage.
Her main topic is on how to plan a DIY room makeover. “I’m so looking forward to sharing my room makeover planning framework,” she says. “I’ll discuss the steps I take for every space I take.”
What may be particularly interesting to some homeowners is that she will be touching on how to be an Airbnb Super Host. Turning your home into an Airbnb can help you pay the mortgage down or put extra cash in your pocket, and the insights Pastoor learned from completing her own Airbnb project in Calgary will be helpful.
“I spent more time in Calgary than I did at home to complete this project,” she says, adding that she fell in love with the city in the process. “That’s why I’m doubly excited to be invited to participate in the Calgary Home Show.”
The Kamloops, B.C. native started blogging about a decade ago. “I have been privileged to teach live workshops, speak at conferences, and share tutorials on television. Last year, I released my first book, and we opened our new Airbnb in Calgary for bookings. This year, I’ve been focusing on creating resources for others to take on their own DIY home projects.”
Casey Matulic, show manager for the Calgary show, says there is even more to look forward to. “We’re really proud to bring in new partners for this show and ensure that attendees get the top tips, tricks and inspiration for any home improvement project they may be want to tackle for the end of the year.”
If you live in Edmonton
Amanda Lwanga from Linger Design was slated to give her debut design presentation at the Edmonton Home Show in March 2020 when COVID-19 cancelled the event two days prior to opening. But from that massive letdown, Lwanga has bolstered her home design expertise and is now – more than ever – ready to hit the big stage.
A career environmentalist, Lwanga will be bringing a greener touch to the DIY and home design process.
“I spent the first five years of my career presenting to audiences across Western Canada on environmental regulations, but this will be my debut in terms of design.”
She will focus on how her company works with this philosophy in mind when she hits the main stage. “We’re in the business of leaving the world more vibrant than we found it – more beautiful, more thought-provoking, more inclusive, and more sustainable,” she says.
“We have expertise in environmental engineering, sustainable architecture, interiors and events. We have a unique understanding of the interconnection between environmental science and art. I’ll be presenting a master class on sustainable evocative Interiors. Our market has a gap regarding high design for interiors (think Versace) and sustainability.”
Lwanga had her eye set on a career as an artist, architect or designer, but says these were never options her African parents would support as anything more than a hobby.
“After getting my undergrad in environmental engineering and a master’s in sustainable architecture, I reached the peak of my career and was in the running for a management position. But I also cried in my car regularly when I pulled up to the office. After 11 years of trying to please everyone but myself, something in me snapped. I started my design firm while on stress leave. Autonomy, design and art were my therapy as I started to find the real me.”
She hasn’t looked back since, and her presentation at the show will be a milestone in her design career.
Kristy Cairns, group manager for the Edmonton show says Lwanga’s success story is just one of many inspiring stories at this year’s event.
“Our fall show is a great way to kick-start the colder months and find the motivation to start a home improvement project you may have left to the end of the year. It promises to be chock full of great inspiration, including appearances from HGTV celebrity guests, local pros and some incredible features.”
