You need to take the elevator in your apartment building every day, and there are some huge pet peeves that come along for the ride. Here’s an elevator etiquette refresher.
1. EXIT THEN ENTER. Let passengers off before boarding the elevator.
2. WHEN TO TAKE THE STAIRS. One flight up or two flights down – use the stairs when
able. This isn’t a hard and fast rule, but it helps keep the flow on a busy elevator.
3. HOLD THE DOOR! Your neighbours will remember you watching the doors close on them – and not in a good way. Hold the door for others who are running to catch the elevator.
4. KIDS. If they’re old enough, let them push the button, but don’t let your children play with the panel or light up all the floors like a Christmas tree. That’s no way to impress the neighbours or make friends.
5. BE NEIGHBOURLY. Generally, the people on the elevator are your neighbours. There’s no need for awkward silence – but there’s also no need for awkward questions. Don’t confuse friendliness with nosiness. Now, enjoy the ride!

East Kildonan is a popular suburb running west from the Red River to Panet Road on the east and again north from Oakland Avenue almost to Harbison Avenue in the south. Largely residential and stretching down Henderson Highway, E.K. residents constantly course downtown over the Disraeli Freeway.
Those who call East Kildonan home know the community by heart – this is a community with deep roots and a lot of long-time residents. They’ve gone to school here or started a family here. Some like the access to other parts of the city while
Life in this big neighbourhood is busy for families – and for traffic. Teens hang out after school near the malls while young parents play at the pool or stroll down the sidewalks. The many parks and pathways also attract young singles in the summer who bike or rollerblade with a friend or a pet.
Locals vary from Harley Davidson fans to Winnipeg Jets fans. Workingclass and middle-income families find housing fairly affordable here, especially east of Henderson Highway. Further west, along the river, bigger, more affluent homes have more seclusion and winding, seemingly exclusive roads. Lush, green groves and bustling community centres are on both sides of the road with many trails teeming with activity.
East Kildonan is home to two school divisions with 15 schools and three community centres – great for families with kids of all ages. There are many small parks and many acres for leisure activity in outreaching Kil-Cona Regional Park. The nearest hospitals are the Health Sciences Centre downtown and Concordia Hospital, plus the family health centre.
The most common ways to get around the main routes are by vehicle and bus. There are 14 bus routes and major roads to follow, but the side roads and pathways that follow the river and through residential blocks are ideal for foot traffic and cyclists. The airport is past the city centre, at least 13 kilometres away.

There are many varieties of grapes in the world and many regions that grow them. Each grape varietal and each region has a unique flavour profile – so there is always something to discover. Getting to know your favourite grapes and varietals is crucial in better understanding which wines you’ll prefer.

SIX TIPS FOR RENTING WITH PETS

1. Don’t wait until the last minute. Begin looking for a pet-friendly rental property at least six to eight weeks before you need to move.
2. Be flexible. Look at a lot of different locations/ neighbourhoods and property types (apartment blocks, condo units, homes). This will improve your chances of finding a suitable place for you and your pet.
3. Introduce your pet to your new landlord. Invite your new landlord to your current home to show the animal has caused no problems there or ask if you can bring your pet to the
landlord’s home. You want to show that your dog is calm and well-behaved.
4. Don’t sneak your pet in without permission. This will only lead to future problems and the landlord can give you notice to move out.
5. Get written permission from the landlord. Ask them to add a clause to your tenancy agreement that says your pet is allowed to live there and any conditions set by the landlord. As well, make sure that any “no pets” clauses are removed from the agreement. If you already have one pet and would like to get another, talk
to your landlord to make sure it’s okay.
6. Be prepared to pay a pet damage deposit. Your landlord can ask you to pay a pet damage deposit that can be up to one month’s rent. This is in addition to your security deposit and tenant services deposit (if applicable).

Corydon Avenue flows like a lazy river. Braced by black metal archways, it connects Osborne Village and Confusion Corner at its eastern end to just past Stafford Street at its western edge. Wildly popular in the summer, this district pumps in the heart of Crescentwood. It’s a great area to get out and enjoy.

cruising past, as for the pedestrians themselves. People like to live on Corydon for the love of Little Italy, for the availability of artsy services and trendy restaurants and for the proximity to downtown.
Corydon Avenue is lit with long strings of lights like a marina or market in Italy. Proudly connected to community and known for pasta or pizza, it is also home to stacks of sushi places, cute boutiques and trendy nail and hair services. Business people make it a standard stop for coffee during the day and skateboarders or motorcyclists ride by after hours.
The crowd on Corydon loves its lattes and gelati, which can be found
on almost every corner. Residents and business people might pay a little more for a high-end treat, but there’s also lots of competition and a great selection of treats and eats for every craving and flavour.
Although Corydon Avenue is adjacent to some main thoroughfares going downtown and to the airport, it is not congested. Driving is popular, but there is a preference for commuters to walk, bus or cycle to work. Visitors and restaurant enthusiasts often stroll down the Avenue on foot faster than motorized vehicles.

What was the inspiration for your office?
Colour, colour and more colour! I wanted this room to be the central creative hub of our home, and nothing sparks creativity like colour. I started with the art and used those tones and shades for all the other decorative elements.
Your favourite element in the space?
The oversized drum pendant from Dainolite is hands-down my favourite element. The office is situated on a split level between the first and second floors, has no windows and the ceilings are more than 15 ft. tall. While we did install pot lights to keep the space bright, we needed something beautiful to fill up the vast space above the upper cabinets, and this white and gold fixture couldn’t be more perfect.
How were you able to keep things looking great but also organized?
While the office includes lots of pretty objects and decorative elements, I made sure that trays, baskets, and files were worked into the design to keep all the office essentials in their proper place. Just because a working home office needs to be functional, doesn’t mean it can’t be cute at the same time.
What was the biggest challenge of the room?
Since I share our home office with my husband, I needed to hold back the reigns a bit to avoid it becoming overly pretty. While I did manage to work plenty of pink into the design – we kept the cabinets grey, installed a navy DIY bookshelf and worked in neutral elements to calm down the girly vibes.

With the kids heading back to school soon, now is the time to de-clutter and get your home organized.
WHAT’S IN YOUR FREEZER?
An organized freezer allows you to find and use what you have, prevents waste and saves you money. Freeze sauces, meats and berries in zipper freezer bags and use permanent marker to write the contents and date directly on the bags. Use sturdy, flat-bottomed freezer baskets to store the floppy freezer bags. Organize by category (frozen vegetable in one basket, sauces in another). Place new foods at the back of the freezer and use the oldest food first.
STORE YOUR SEASONAL CLOTHING
Before storing them, ensure that they have been cleaned. Even if items appear clean after wearing,
body oils can cause stains that set over a few months and may attract moths. Never store clothing in plastic bags for extended periods (even those that come from drycleaners); they trap moisture and encourage mildew. Use cotton garment bags instead. Avoid storing clothes in cardboard boxed as acids in the cardboard can cause fabrics to yellow and the glue between the layers can attract insects. Use lidded plastic storage containers instead. Tuck some cedar blocks or shavings inside (it’s less toxic than moth balls). Always store the clothes in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area.
MAXIMIZE BATHROOM STORAGE SPACE
Place items you use daily within easy reach, like on the countertop, in the top drawer or in a hanging organizer in the shower area.
Store items used once or twice a week in the next most-accessible place, like the middle drawer or under the sink.
Stash items used only once or twice a month in the back of the cupboard or in labelled boxes.
For shared bathrooms, avoid turf wars by giving each person their own shower tote, which can be stored in the person’s bedroom when not in use.
HOW DO YOU FILE YOUR PAPERWORK?
Some experts suggest placing new paper behind previous ones (filing to the back) because it’s faster and easier to drop papers in the file that way. On the other hand, when you are looking for papers inside your files, you are more likely to need the most current ones, so you could access them faster if you filed them at the front. This just goes to show that organizing is not one size fits all; you need to fine the systems that work best for you.

INTO YOUR NEW COMMUNITY BY DOING THIS
When you move, you’ll probably be happy to let go of a few things, like old clothes, worn furniture and broken gadgets. Those you won’t miss. But the things you will? Close friends, favourite hangouts –familiar things that made you feel at home. While some things aren’t easily replaced, the following tips can help you get settled into a new neighbourhood after relocating. Find some great new favourites and it will make adjusting just a little bit easier.
TAKE PUBLIC TRANSIT
Economical and eco-friendly, taking public transit is one of the best ways to get a feel for a new city. No plans? Grab a day pass and pick a route along a major road. This will help you get your bearings and get settled in an
unfamiliar place. Or just keep your eyes open in the morning during your commute. You’ll learn to recognize landmarks, familiarize yourself with street names, and perhaps spot a place or two to get off and explore. All this while someone else does the driving.
LOOK ONLINE
Online reviews host a wealth of information about local businesses around you, but don’t stop there. Bookmark some local blogsthey’re known for publishing ‘bestof’ lists and frequently updated listings to community events. And while you might not be a tourist, travel websites can be a great place to find the must-trys and can’t-misses in your new city.
ASK AROUND
Independent exploration and online research can only take you so far. Don’t be shy - take the initiative and ask someone in your project group to suggest some lunch options. Take up your
coworkers on those after-work drinks. Use opportunities to get to know others better, and ask questions! People love to share their experiences - good, bad, and ugly, and it’ll give you some much needed insight when you’re a recent transplant to a new place. If you’re introverted and this all sounds easier said than done, try connecting with just one or two people you feel comfortable with. Asking for recommendations is a casual way to break the ice and get a conversation started. You’ll get settled much quicker if you develop your social network.
