With winter on the way, one thing that will keep us smiling is that beautiful Alberta sunshine! Having the right windows ensures that you’re maximizing the benefits of those warm and sunny rays. Our friends at Duxton Windows & Doors share how they replaced Heat Mirror windows in a client’s home with Quad Pane thin glass, that will block the sun’s rays to avoid overheating issues, while still allowing as much sunlight as possible into the home. Check out pages 16-17 for all the details. Here’s wishing you a joyful Holiday season and cheers to a healthy and happy 2022!

ARCHITECTURAL FILM IS CHANGING HOW COMPANIES ARE REMODELLING

Bodaq Interior Film

R

by MICHELLE HOPKINS emodelling the interior of your business can be daunting and expensive. You want the right products that offer endless design possibilities as well as comfort and durability. Introducing Bodaq Interior Film’s self-adhesive finishing solution - a costeffective alternative that is extremely durable, offers a wide range of choices and looks great. Best of all? There is a minimum of disruption to your business. These innovative architectural vinyl films can be used on everything from cabinetry, floors, ceilings, fireplaces, even elevators – just about anywhere you can think of. The other advantages of the architectural film are that it can be applied to nearly any surface, whether it is flat or curved, wood or metal and comes in a variety of finishes, including matte and high-gloss. Besides offering more than 400 different peel-and-stick patterns, replicating every natural surface you can think

of, such as stone, leather, metal, wood and tile, the films are eco-friendly and flame retardant with antibacterial and antifungal properties. The marble and wood flooring films alone look so real, they will fool your customers. IKEA has used these lightweight and non-toxic films to renovate several stores across Canada, including all of its stores in B.C. The furniture and home furnishings giant has applied the film in their showroom design vignettes, at cashiers’ desk stations, as well as on feature walls, to name a few applications. With savings between 30 to 40 percent of the cost of the real material, Bodaq Interior Film is revolutionizing the way businesses, as well as homeowners, are renovating their spaces. Perhaps best of all — the film creates very little waste and doesn’t require any additional adhesives, resulting in no toxic paint fumes or sawdust to linger after the super easy installation. For more information, visit www.bodaq.com.

QUAD PANE

window replacement by DAVID SMEDING, SHIELD WINDOWS & DOORS AND AYNSLEY DUECK, DUXTON WINDOWS & DOORS

About the Project We met Greg and Shelley at the Home Show in January 2020. We proceeded to set up a meeting for the following week. They had a beautiful home that they built themselves 30 years ago, just outside the city of Edmonton. After living in their house so long, they wanted some things changed, and they wanted highly efficient and insulated 16

RENO + DECOR | DECEMBER 2021/JANUARY 2022

windows. Their original windows were Heat Mirror windows, but they still got condensation on the interior glass, so they wanted an even higher R-value on the replacement windows. In the master bedroom, they had two smaller windows which were awkward to meet building code for egress. On the main floor they had an office with only two small windows, where they wanted a lot more natural light.

For the glass we were able to offer them our quad pane thin glass with Low-e 272/180, achieving an R-value of about R-12. This glass blocks the sun’s rays to avoid overheating issues, while still allowing as much sunlight as possible into their home. Greg and Shelley were very happy with the performance numbers we could achieve, and at an affordable price.

In the

master bedroom, we cut out the wall

between the two windows and built in a new structure so they could now have one larger

window. One side opens easily to vent and meet egress, with a window type that they preferred. In the office we made a huge change. They started with two small windows in a 160 square foot room. We removed their closet, and made two new openings. The window facing the back became 12 x 5’! And the window on the side is one solid piece of glass at 8’ x 5’. This completely changed the room and made it the perfect place to sit down and relax. They live out in the country and this really brought the outdoors in. All together we ended up changing out 36 new windows and 4 new doors. The original windows had stucco over the flange, so we had to carefully cut 1.5” around each window and carefully remove them.

For their doors they wanted to keep their electronic locks, so we used a standard single point lock. But to ensure that the seal at the top of the door would be maintained, we added roller catches at the top of each door. This worked well and holds the top of the panel snug against the weather seal. Greg and Shelley were a pleasure to work with, and over the months we built a nice relationship, to the point where it was sad to say goodbye. So Shelley was trying to find more work for us to do in their home so we could visit again! For more information, go to duxtonwindows.com

clienitmonial: test

Shield were excellent! Both Paul & David were very professional and responsive to my many many emails of questions and extras I asked for. Provided great info and other contacts for more of my questions. We sought several window installers and quotes. These were the best windows by far and I really did my research! and the cost was only slightly higher. They were all installed in just 4-5 days and they look fantastic! I really love my new door too!

HOW TO PICK WINE LIKE A PRO with Super Wine Girl, Angela Aiello

1 2 3 4

NEW WORLD IS ALL ABOUT GRAPES AND EUROPE IS ALL ABOUT THE PLACE IT’S FROM The first thing to understand is that in places such as Canada, the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Chile and Argentina, wines are labelled by the grapes inside the bottle. You’ll see grape names such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Shiraz and Grenache, etc. In many places in Europe, wines are labelled by the place they are from. You’ll see names of places such as, Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, Chianti, Barolo, Cahors, Priorat, Rioja and Sherry. There are many varieties of grapes in the world and many regions that grow them. Each grape varietal and each region has a unique flavour profile – so there is always something to discover. Getting to know your favourite grapes and varietals is crucial in better understanding which wines you’ll prefer. UNDERSTAND WINE STYLES AND HAVE AN IDEA OF WHICH STYLE YOU’RE CRAVING Do you drink according to your mood, the weather or what food you’re pairing with the wine? Your wine preferences may change based on your mood, the occasion, the time of year or what you’re preparing for the next meal. Give your style words and feelings so that you can pinpoint exactly what wine you want to try. DON’T JUDGE A WINE BY THE LABEL OR PRICE Flashy art or a higher price tag can lead you to believe you are purchasing quality wine. Be mindful this is not always the case. Read the labels (both front and back). You can even research the producer for added information as you can learn more about the product and the producer’s work. A nice wine label or bottle on sale will get you once but it might not get you again. There are great wines at great prices and also great wines with great labels, but judging just on looks or price is not the way to buy wine. BE OPEN TO TAKING A WINE ADVENTURE Did you know the Canary Islands makes wine? Did you know Washington State makes killer Cabernet and that Argentina grows vineyards at high elevation, creating exceptional mountain wines? There is so much cool stuff to learn about wine that you can literally have an adventure in every single bottle you open! You can learn about the world in every sip, and that’s really exciting, especially now when it’s hard to travel. You can taste the world from the comfort of your home with a glass of wine in your hand and Google by your side. To learn more and subscribe to Angela’s Super Taster Collective visit superwinegirl.com or follow her on Instagram and/or TikTok @SuperWineGirl

Cellarettes or bar cabinets, as they are called today, have been around for centuries. Today, bar cabinets are multi-functional, housing your bar accessories, bottles and also acting as a great small furniture piece.

Prosecco Rosé is finally available at the LCBO, and we are tickled pink about it. In order for it to be labelled Prosecco Rosé, the grapes used must come from a specific geographic area that has passed the Italian government’s quality requirements, and be fermented for at least 60 days in stainless steel tanks. ntertaining season is upon us again after a long moratorium on gatherings. Curated affairs are the trending ticket this party season. With every detail carefully thought out and nothing overlooked, your guests will enjoy a “tended to” vibe, while accommodating any conscious or sub-conscious social-distancing comfort zones that still linger. Let’s break down this trend.

30

RENO + DECOR |

DECEMBER 2021/JANUARY 2022

Our home is your home A party where you’re not at ease is one that you’ll be leaving shortly. Your guests should feel comfortable, with plenty of room to sit, stand and manoeuvre. How many guests do you anticipate showing up? What

activities will they be engaging in, and where? Then, design “stations” to accommodate your plan. Typical party stations include food, bar and lounging, but your list may also include something specific, such as a games zone, or wine tasting area. It’s also a nice touch to have a “welcome zone” by the entrance/exit, with a coat rack, a place for shoes and, of course, hand sanitizer. Movable furniture is my go-to when designing any living space. From a practicality perspective, these pieces are worth their weight in gold. And the great news is, modern furniture designers are creating pieces that maximize multi-function, space efficiency and aesthetics. Think coffee tables that rise into dining tables, storage benches and ottomans that double as seating, and bar carts on wheels that have a million and one different uses at this time of year. When prepping your space for an intimate party, style matters. Though your party stations are temporary, ensure each of them adds aesthetic

value to your space. Will it look pleasing? Attract guests? Aside from seating and surfaces, or anything else essential to that activity, ensure each station has a focal point, such as a piece of art or centrepiece, and dedicated lighting. In the dining area, opt for versatility and ease, with themed, self-serve food stations. This set-up accommodates more people (bonus if you have a small space) while allowing guests to choose what they eat, when and where. Just ensure you have plenty of extra seating throughout your entertaining areas. Consider individualizing single portions in disposable dinnerware, ideally recyclable or compostable. It’s more sanitary, and this grab-and-go tactic leaves time for the hosts to mingle with guests.

The bar is the focal point of many parties, so this space should be stocked, and styled. Supply the bar with the standard selection of beverages and glassware, being mindful of your guests’ preferences. Prepare what you can ahead of time, such as mixes and garnishes. Of course, always have a selection of alcohol-free options for the nondrinkers and designated drivers. Finish the bar with some themed or seasonal decor and lighting. Party season this year is all about being a gracious host, and creating a curated affair, from the food and drinks to the music wafting through the speakers. What’s the vibe you’re aiming to achieve, and how will you evoke that mood? I think you’ll find that a little forethought will go a long way.

Modern elements and cosy details turn this cabin into a special retreat

35

T

his cosy yet contemporary chalet in Blue Mountain, Collingwood, serves as a recreational retreat for its owners, a haven to enjoy the great outdoors and host family and friends. To match the homeowners’ chic, laid-back lifestyle, I chose a modern farmhouse aesthetic that embraces the mountain vibe, the home’s architectural attributes and its structural limitations. Despite its many transformative elements (new floors, a fireplace, mudroom, updated entrance,

36

new panelling, staircase, interior doors, and a lot of paint), the home maintains a distinctive cabin feel highlighted by a central fireplace. On approaching this project, my original inclination was to move the fireplace. However, on discovering the home’s structural limitations, I opted to keep it in its original position, streamlining and modernizing the existing traditional wood-burning stove with a sleek, four-sided gas unit. What started as a design challenge became a new focal point to be enjoyed from every angle in the vast space,

which was now perfectly divided, yet connected. The dining area proved to be a fun collaboration with my clients, who chose to feature a Twiggy painting that adds a pop of colour and contemporary flair to the other side of the fireplace. To bring drama and dimension to this open-concept area, I painted the east and west gable ends in a dark, warm grey colour. I repeated this same contrasting hue on all interior doors to perfectly match the smoky, stained hardwood floors and complement the pickled pine ceilings.

focal point of the space. On the main floor, the guest bedrooms were designed to maximize sleeping. Twinover-queen bunk beds were placed against the wall and a few windows, featuring light and airy metal frames that don’t feel visually heavy in the space. The other bedroom boasts a wall-to-wall headboard that allows the twin beds to be pushed together

to create a king-sized bed, if and when desired. In the end, the variations of warm greys and contrasting colours throughout the chalet, plus the addition of cosy furniture pieces, work well to create a warm and welcoming space everywhere you go. And the perfect place to entertain friends and family.

IDEAS 2022 PHOTO: Vasil Chapesh

The new year is all about decorating with personality, and designer Bilha Kangethe breaks down what we can expect

T

he year 2021 was certainly an interesting one in interior design. I saw a focus on balance and functionality, as we spent more time in our homes. In 2022, things are going to change. Off the heels of Milan Design Week, exhibitions showcased refined spaces that were skillfully combined with bold colours and geometric forms. In effect, we anticipate 2022 trends to dial into personality and expect to see inspiring spaces that honor the fullness of living, telling a story of sustainability and nostalgia, mixed with an artful blend of colour choices and positivity about the future. Here are my top four trends for the new year.

MATERIAL MANIA Natural materials, organic textures, and a blend of rich wood, marble, glass and metal combinations are taking centre stage in furniture and decor collections. Rattan and wicker trends continue to thrive, giving a more relaxed and airy feel in our interiors.

POST MODERN DESIGN Reminiscent of the 1970s-90s post-modern design, is a revival of the original style. The bold shapes, colours and pop art that were favoured then have now become muted and softer. Materials such as travertine, terrazzo, velvet, boucle and coloured glass and plastics, instantly transport us to these past eras with one goal in mind – to provide comfort and cosiness, all the while making a statement in our interiors.

NOT SO NEUTRAL We are seeing a shift in colour in our interiors, saying goodbye to grey and white neutrals and adding colour in a fresh and exciting way. Grounded in natures deep earth tones, paired with rich jewel tones, this colour palette will inspire you throughout 2022. PHOTO: Vasil Chapesh

AVD and ROLLOUT introduce new brutalist-inspired wallpaper

F

or the last 11 years Alykhan Velji’s boutique design firm has brought an energetic flavour to the Canadian design scene. Known as a master of mixing design styles, patterns and textures, he loves to add a hint of the unexpected to each of his projects – ensuring that each design is personalized, goes beyond the current trends, and stands the test of time. “My love for introducing patterns and texture in my designs is something that I have come to be known for. It adds so much character and life to a space,” he says. “This can be done through textiles, fabrics, and wallcoverings. Layering spaces is also key and by using of all of these components, you can really create spaces that have personality.”

Designing spaces using murals has been a particular favourite. Now, Aly is collaborating with the renowned RollOut wallpaper design company to introduce a new line of wallcoverings. Inspired by Aly’s heritage, and brutalist architecture – a minimalist construction style that emerged in the 150s – this new line is the latest at Aly Velji Design. Three distinctive wall mural designs are available.

Elements Overlaying soft forms and sharp angles found in brutalist architecture makes this a study in contrast. Working with colours found in nature and a subtle linen background results in an approachable yet dramatic look.

Dune

Natural tones of sand, pinks and ochre work together with organic shapes that take inspiration from the desert and brutalist architecture. The stark contrast of areas that are often thought of as bar, dry and extreme to show a softer side of both.

Terra Taking inspiration from the red earth, clear ocean and lush greens found in my native country, Tanzania. The palette has been chosen to evoke the spirit and sensation of tropical latitudes and a lovely casual breeziness. Go to alyveljidesigns.com and rollout.ca for more information. renoanddecor.com

cosy

Make your home by C. MARIE HEBSON

Whether you’re working with a small space or just want to give your great room a more intimate vibe, a few of my favorite ways to get that

vibe

Layer in luxe fabrics The addition of lusher, richer textures that complement existing decor is an instant way to make any room feel that much cosier. Especially with a tone on tone palette, where colour isn’t a distraction. Here are two gorgeous sofas upholstered in faux fur, and the side chairs in wool – you can’t get more textural or cosier than that! Fur, Mongolian Lamb and velvet are my favourite go to fabrics to get cosy warmth.

54

RENO + DECOR | DECEMBER 2021/JANUARY 2022

Take a holistic approach Incorporating healthy, natural materials to promote wellness – here I Created a restorative environment by selecting local materials and locally resourced fabrics and furnishings. The overall affect helps to generate a feeling of good will, harmony and balance with nature – shown here is the gorgeous shou sugi ban dining table I designed, made locally by Hammerton Forge.

Opt for oversized – less is more mentality Too often I walk into a clients space and they have too small an area rug, coffee table or even lamps. Try a larger area rug, ensure that all legs of the furniture in the room are on the area rug. Try oversized ottomans or coffee tables – it brings all the elements in the room and brings them closer. A fabric ottoman always adds coziness especially with a great drink tray.

Restorative design to soothe the soul

56

RENO + DECOR | DECEMBER 2021/JANUARY 2022

by LOUIS DUNCAN-HE challenges, globally, and often, as a result, individually-the comfort we get from a well-designed space can be indescribable. You cannot put words to the comfort, warmth, serenity, or restorative quality of a beautiful room. It is just something that you feel.

As designers, we learned the fundamental building blocks of the art of design. From scale and proportion, to balance and harmony, to colour theory – these principles highlight that there is indeed a very technical side to the process, which can be acquired through theory and practice.

Finding ways to incorporate natural and organic elements into your home is always soothing to the soul.

Still, the heart and soul of design is not something that can be easily extracted from a book. Great designers not only design with precision, but also with an incredible amount of energy, creativity and spirit. You can feel the difference when you step into a space that was designed with a deeper intention in mind. As a designer, my mandate is to thoughtfully reveal the authentic aspirations of each client to create spaces that are rich in spirit and restorative to the soul. Although the process and end product may vary for each homeowner, here are my top 5 things to always keep in mind ahead:

1. Focus on a feeling

When we start working with clients, this is one of the first and most important exercises we go through. We ask them to come to the design briefing with a variety of inspiration photos that elicit an immediate reaction or feeling. It should be visceral: it either moves you, or it doesn’t. It doesn’t matter if you love a specific sofa or armchair in a living room reference. What’s important is to try and nail down the overall intention and sentiment of the space, because without this key piece of information, it’s hard to actually design with much meaning and purpose.

renoanddecor.com

57

2. Get personal

Whether you’re working on your own or with a designer, get very personal. During the onboarding process, a good designer will ask questions in a variety of different ways, trying to get to the root behind your aspirations. If we aren’t getting anywhere with straightforward questions, we may pivot to exploring areas like art, music, travel. Ultimately, it’s not about trying to identify the exact shade of colour you want. Rather, why are you drawn to the colour in the first place? Because in understanding the underlying desire and reason behind a choice, it becomes much more impactful. 58

RENO + DECOR | DECEMBER 2021/JANUARY 2022

3. Find balance

Balance and harmony can be brought into a room in so many different ways. It can be as simple as highlighting overall symmetry, or utilizing the principles of Feng Shui, or focusing on harmonizing the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water). The point is, finding a way to create balance and

harmony in a way that visually makes sense to you will add calmness and a restorative quality to your home

4. Go natural

Finding ways to incorporate natural and organic elements into your home is always soothing to the soul. You may want a very rustic looking space

containing wood with a live edge. Bring in a soft alpaca throw or add subtle fluted wood detailing accents or piece of furniture.

5. Follow your heart We often intuitively know exactly what we want, so instead of trying to create an endless array of the “why it won’t work”, focus on ways to work

with your overall vision and bring it to life. Usually having this sense of direction and conviction is the best way to enter into a partnership with a designer. Because it’s not a designer’s

job to think for you. Rather, it’s our job to help edit and bring a certain level of focus to the project, to help bring your ideas to life in the most beautiful and meaningful way possible.

cosy holiday entertaining

Spreading warmth and welcome for the

HOLIDAYS

T

he Holidays just haven’t been the same since the pandemic last year, and though some limitations for gatherings have been eased this year, some caution should still be exercised for the greater good. But that doesn’t mean celebrations can’t be warm and welcoming, if a little bit more intimate. The team at Calgary’s Designers Edge takes a look at how we can still achieve a glam look over the Christmas season with a focus on bold colour and a cosier look. “Just because the world has gone through some changes, does not mean the holidays are cancelled,” says Designers Edge President Danielle Paul. “We are looking forward to a safe and happy holiday season! The combination of warm textures and bold colour

in your holiday home decor can ensure that this Christmas is cosy and entertaining!” Designers Edge (DE) has become a leading voice in interior decor in Calgary and counts among their clients several of the city’s top homebuilders. Their work can be seen in a wide range of single-family and multi-family showhomes and custom private homes. Danielle and the team at Designers Edge talked with R+D to come up with expert tips on how to achieve a safe and glamourous Holiday celebration with family and a few friends. Zoom Christmas parties may still be the order of the day, but it helps if you can have a stylishly festive background around you. And one can always raise Christmas spirits – literally – with their suggestion of Christmas-themed cocktails.

Table Setting

60

DE Team

1. What is the most important tip for a safe but stylish holiday entertaining and how can you achieve this through decor? DE Team: It is important to remember that staying safe while sharing intimate moments with family is a priority. One way to achieve this during the Christmas season is through how the table is set for dinner. We suggest serving small individual side dishes for each person that are filled with gravy, cranberry sauce and all your other sides. This can be done without compromising the decor and design of your table setting. The small dishes set around the place mat remains cohesive with the overall aesthetic. To add to this, we incorporated a wood cutting board as the centerpiece while layering some greenery to make the table look lively. In preparing food, you can lead by example while still creating a festive aesthetic. Friends and family can still join in festivities while being in the comfort of their own home. Each person partaking prepares a list of ingredients of a Christmas themed cocktail or mocktail of their choice to share with everyone else. Through a group video call, each person takes their turn hosting a Master Class and demonstrates how to create their personalized concoction with everyone following along step by step. Go the extra mile by styling a bar cart for the occasion! We bring in the use of decanters, glassware, and greenery to style the cart while elevating an area of the home.

Danielle

2. Any new trends in holiday decor this year? What’s the colour trend? DE Team: Neutrals never go out of season! This year we see brown and black being a foundation, and dark colours with metallics as the focus. A rich, dark green contrasts with gold in our Christmas decor this year! Some warmth, bold colour and sparkle – you get it all! With these being the focal trend in our decor, filtering in neutrals through wood materials would add extra warmth to the home. Christmas tends to bring out the crafty side in most people, so this year we see more and more soft materials prevail in decor. This includes yarn, velvets, pampas leather and felt to make into things such as wreaths, ornaments, and so on. renoanddecor.com

3. Which room would you concentrate entertaining in? Dining room and great room would be obvious but how about foyers, flex rooms or half-baths? DE Team: Christmas is an exciting time of year and there is no shame in going all out on decorating different areas of the home! We make the living room and dining room a priority in holiday decorating since most of the time will be spent in these areas. It should be decorated to be the most festive while entertaining guests. Fabrics are an easy way to make a room feel cosy and they can be used in many different applications. Christmas tree skirts are rising in popularity to hide the base and our take on making one is using a green crushed velvet fabric from Maxwell Fabrics. Crushed velvet suggests warmth, luxury and Maxwell Fabrics in Calgary has a variety of colours to pick from. Aside from a tree skirt, fabrics can be custom ordered to make drapery and throws! Mantles, bookcases and more! Shelves are often throughout the home in some shape or form, so knowing how to style these areas will help make the home more festive for entertaining. Greenery is the number one staple during the season as it warms up the space with its calming effect. You can mix metallics with dark greenery and have them loosely sitting on a shelf or gathered in the form of a garland. The more the better! The biggest 62

advantages to getting faux greenery, is that it’s local and can be picked up right here in Calgary from Silk Plant Warehouse, but also that it never dies! Plus, the variety in colours and availability of flocking or metallics is unlike what you can get from real greenery. We enjoy keeping it for the next year and filling in new colours or branches to suit a completely different look.

4. As long as we are limited in the number of guests we can invite over, are there any tips you have in creating a festive yet intimate entertaining for such small groups? DE Team: For most of us, the living room is where we have the most memorable moments. Everyone gathers here to open gifts, share stories, and have hot beverage on the floor surrounding the coffee table. Creating a laid-back atmosphere will encourage people to come together and this can be done through styling the areas you want more attraction to. Is there a fireplace mantle? What about a coffee table? How does the Christmas tree interact with all these focal points? We gravitate to unique, custom-made items that go along with the season. Whether it be for decor or for

gifts, we go to LETHRBAR in Calgary for all our leather creations! We had some leather gift tags made from LETHRBAR to personalize gifts. They can also make decor, such as ornaments, coasters, or napkin rings, to add a touch of personality and warmth to the Christmas decor!

5. Tips where to get best holiday decor locally? DE Team: We rely heavily on our suppliers in our home designs, and it doesn’t stop with Christmas decor! Here are a few supportive local businesses that assist us in creating our vision. SILK PLANT WAREHOUSE – Greenery and silk plants are available all year round! MAXWELL FABRICS – With a showroom in Calgary, it is made easy to see all the options of fabric to make into your custom piece. LETHRBAR – Custom, handmade goods are favourable during this season because you know care has been put into the product and it is made unique! These local businesses never let us down when we need something to fit our interior decor and you may be surprised what they can offer during the Christmas season! renoanddecor.com

Tropical plants in a Canadian winter

H

by MARK & BEN CULLEN

ere in Canada, we endure a long, cold winter that encourages us to reach for tropical plants for good reason. There is literally no better way to introduce humidity and oxygen into our indoor environment. To garden indoors successfully, especially this time of year, it’s important to provide the best possible growing conditions. With the right care and location, your indoor plants will live a good long life and you will reap many benefits from them.

Light requirements Observing the growth and changes in your tropical plants allows you to determine if they are receiving enough light. Plants that don’t get enough light will usually look pale, have longer than normal stems, and smaller than normal leaves. Sometimes, a plant will look as if it’s reaching for light, stretching its leaves and lengthening the distance between growth nodes toward the nearest window – a sure sign that it needs either to be placed in a sunnier window or the natural light augmented with artificial light. Plants with colourful foliage will often lose colour when they don’t get enough light, and revert to green leaves. It is natural for most flowering plants to stop flowering through the winter months.

Fertilizer Fertilizing indoor plants in winter is necessary only when you see new growth developing or the plant is in

bloom. Otherwise, your tropical plants are “resting” this time of year and will not benefit from a fertilizer application. It’s best to err on the side of caution and give plants a little less than the amount the instructions call for. There are several forms of fertilizer available: Granular, slow-release granules, spikes and water soluble. These can be organic or inorganic chemical combinations. In our opinion, the best choice for houseplants is an inorganic, water soluble formula. The elements in it are readily available for the plant’s use and you will be able to see the effect right away. The final step in choosing your houseplant fertilizer is determined by the plants you have. Some, such as African violets and geraniums, have fertilizers formulated specifically for them. African violet fertilizer, for instance, often is a 10-30-30 ratio with traces of boron, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum and zinc. If there is no specific formula for your houseplant, a 20-20-20 ratio with trace elements is best.

Rules of fertilizing We follow three rules for successful fertilizing: Do not fertilize plants when: They are wilted, dry or dormant. Plants need nutrients only when they are actively growing or flowering. Fertilizing at other times could cause a build-up of insoluble salts in the soil, which can damage the roots. If white salts build up on the pot rim

or soil surface, stop fertilizing and drench the soil a couple of times with generous doses of water (putting them in the shower works!) then, if growth continues, resume feeding in a month or so, using less fertilizer. If the plant stops growing or wilts, despite the proper watering schedule, stop fertilizing, and drench again. Then wait until growth resumes before starting up the fertilizing and use a weaker solution than before.

Maintenance In the winter months, the air in most Canadian homes is dry and conditions are perfect for insects to thrive. To raise the humidity around your plants, place a tray filled with pebbles and water under them. The water should not touch the bottom of the pots. This will create a cooler, humid atmosphere due to evaporation. Routinely inspecting houseplants enables you to observe and correct most problems before they get out of control. You will be able to spot insect or disease problems before they get too serious. Keep the leaves free from dust accumulation by washing them with a soft cloth that has been sprayed with insecticidal soap. African violets and other “hairy” leafed plants should not be misted or washed with a cloth, but instead should be washed in lukewarm, soapy water. Just hold the soil in place with your fingers while inverting the plant, swish the plant in the soapy water and rinse twice in clear water.
