“the best is yet to come” and after my invitation from the BMW AG board to attend the brand and business summit in Munich this last February I’m convinced this saying still holds true. In my 20 years with Brian Jessel and the BMW brand there has never been an invitation to view future product as experienced on this trip. The small gathering of BMW retailers from around the globe were shown real pre-production versions of the new upcoming X5, X7, 8 series Coupé and Cabriolet, Z4, 3 series, i8 Roadster, 7 Series LCI and an almost finished production version of the next generation 4 Series. We were even treated to a sneak peek of the concept BMW Vision Next I brand. Some of this product will not be out until 2020 while others will arrive in our showroom by the end of this year. Either way it’s exciting to see the future shape of this brand as well as personally meet one of the newest BMW AG board members, Pieter Nota, who is new Head of Sales and Aftersales for the Brand BMW. As the brand continues to venture in new directions and possibilities we at Brian Jessel BMW continue to explore new avenues for the Brian Jessel brand. This issue features many models mentioned and I invite you to come in and experience some of the best product we’ve ever had. Best regards,

Jim Murray

Exceptional Service Much Appreciated I A M W R I T I N G YO U T O E X P R E S S M Y

gratitude for the exceptional service that was provided to me recently. I spoke with Mr. Jason Brauer early last week and explained that there was an indication of an oil leak in my vehicle. He told me to bring the car in and they would accommodate me. The technician Lyle showed me the problem—an oil pan gasket. He advised it was a lengthy repair but I should be able to pick the car up by closing

time that day. I was given a free courtesy car and sure enough my car was ready at the end of the day. Mr. Brauer and Lyle made this happen on extremely short notice and for that we are very grateful. The empathy shown by both of these gentlemen was very evident and the engine shampoo done when the work was completed showed a great attention to detail. My wife and I have thought about trading in our convertible as we have three 10

you for our recent car purchase. Right before we left for Germany, Uwe’s car was recalled for the VW diesel issue. So we had only one car. Uwe spent the whole summer trying to decide if we should go electric or hybrid. It seems like more choices are coming out now. I decided that while he waited to decide we would get a pre-owned for a temporary period as we needed a second car. I went down to Brian Jessel BMW PreOwned and found a perfect X1 and got it for Uwe the day before he got home. He loves it. He has never owned or driven anything other than a VW his whole life, so it was a big step. And this was a basic model — imagine once he drives other BMWs! Thank you! We will be in touch with our next purchase, and please keep us updated on any electric or hybrids that are coming out. Warmest Regards,

scenes in the seminal rock mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap involves guitarist Nigel Tufnal explaining how his amplifier is louder than any others because it “goes to 11” rather than 10. Well, the BMW M760Li xDrive goes to 11—and beyond. The unabashed flagship of the sixth-generation luxury sport sedan 7 Series, the 2018 M760Li cranks the volume with a thunderous V12 twin-turbo engine producing over 600 horsepower and 590 lbs.-ft of torque. Other M Performance upgrades include tailored tuning of the 8-speed transmission’s shift program, exclusive 20-inch alloy wheels, 19-inch M Sport brakes, an M Sport exhaust system, performance tires and Integral Active Steering. In contrast to these beast-mode attributes is a subtle refinement as luxurious and stylish as the over-the-top performance is ample and precise. Exterior styling visual cues set the M760Li apart: several pieces of exterior trim are finished in Cerium Grey, most notably the mirror caps, side air breathers and the tailpipe embellishers. In addition, the illuminated doorsill finishers with V12 markings are a signal to the driver and passengers of the exceptional driving experience that awaits just over that threshold. There are also V12 badges on the C-pillars, a modified front end with enlarged air inlets and a unique tailpipe design around back. The M760Li can also be ordered as an ‘Excellence’ model, receiving exterior and interior modifications that create a plusher appearance when compared to the sporty aesthetic of the standard allwheel drive M760Li.

Inside the long wheelbase model is where the finer things in motoring come to the forefront, with high-quality materials forged into a design language that the luxury automaker is renowned for. That extended wheelbase provides massive rear passenger legroom, and the accompanying seats are designed with long and luxurious road trips in mind. And don’t worry about that 600-horsepower engine intruding into the whisperquiet cabin, nor any jostling from the handling and ride characteristics of this uber sedan. The M760Li comes equipped

As much as the M760Li is built with the rear passengers in mind, it’s most certainly designed for drivers.

Utilizing two-axle air suspension working with Dynamic Damper Control, the system provides an exceptional level of ride comfort. The suspension, damping and vibration control are perfectly balanced between sporty and smooth. For example, body side tilts from rapid changes in direction are compensated for immediately. the greatest possible freedom of movement, which further raises ride comfort. Given that deluxe and accommodating rear-seat setting, many owners will opt to ride in the back of this executive limo. If so, it won’t be difficult to spot their drivers in the valet lot. Just look for the biggest smiles. As much as the M760Li is built with the rear passengers in mind, it’s most certainly designed for drivers (don’t forget, this is a BMW). The aforementioned M Performance tuning of the 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission shift program is specially adapted to the characteristics of that big power unit. If it’s sporty driving you want, the steering wheel-mounted shift paddles provide such an experience, as does launch control, which ensures optimum acceleration under all conditions. In other words, turn it up to 11. A symphony awaits. SPRING/SUMMER 2018• BrianJesselBMW.com

BrianJesselBMW.com • SPRING/SUMMER 2018

That really is the only question left unanswered by BMW’s all-new drop-top version of its halo electrified twoseater, the i8 Coupé. Truth is it goes by both names depending on where you live. Here in Canada it’s the 2019 BMW i8 Roadster; over in its European home country it’s the 2019 BMW i8 Spyder. Maintaining the futuristic presence and underlying technical specs of its hardtop stablemate, the i8 Roadster features a softtop roof made from high-grade fabric that opens and closes with a push of a button in just 16 seconds. The Z-shaped folding mechanism is made from aluminum using new 3D printing technology, underscoring the i8’s forward-thinking philosophy. In addition to that soft-top, there is one other notable difference between the Roadster and Coupé. And that is in the rear, where the Roadster gets a pair of bulging, curvaceous pillars that run behind the head rests and into the tail in a U-shaped design. And to save weight, there are all-new 20inch alloy wheels. As with the 2019 Coupé, the Roadster boasts the features that set the i8 apart from the supercar pack, including BMW eDrive technology and an all-wheel drive system. Combined, more then enough to get that wind blowing through your hair.

INCE ITS INCEPTION BMW HAS HAD

a strong track record of bringing innovative concept vehicles to market, and the latest to make the jump from the auto show floor to the dealership showroom is the highly anticipated X7. Based on the Concept X7, the three-row sport luxury SUV promises to mix the executive privilege and performance of a 7 Series with the utility and flexibility of a traditional BMW X model. It also promises to shake up the somewhat staid full-size luxury SUV market, with a futuristic styling that charts the course for X models of the future, and onboard technology that further enriches the interaction between humans and the machine.

The Concept X7 hints at what the final production model will look like.

The 2018 X7 is currently in the early days of production at BMW’s Spartanburg, Tennessee facility, where all X models for the Canadian and the global market are built. As such, particulars about engines, transmissions and chassis specs aren’t yet public; however, it is believed that the stylish SUV will be the first X model to offer a V12 powerplant. Expect six- and eightcylinder engines to be part of the mix too. The Concept X7’s bold exterior lines and well-balanced proportions are certainly head turning, but it is the interior that really sets it apart. The instrument cluster is a 12.3-inch touchscreen; the individual first- and second-row seats are mounted on pedestals; and occupants can access digital services on their own personal infotainment screens and share their content with others in the car via gesture control. Expect to see the 2018 BMW X7 at Brian Jessel BMW later this year.

BMW i3 burst onto the electric vehicle scene, immediately redefining the segment and garnering numerous global awards in the process. For model year 2018, the i3 enters its allnew second generation, featuring a larger battery, a renewed styling inside and out, and a sport model, the i3s. As you would expect from a BMW sport model, performance is at the forefront in the i3s. It comes standard with sports suspension, a 10-millimetre drop in ride height, an additional 40 millimetres in track width and is available with exclusive 20-inch light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design that are 20 millimetres wider than the previously available versions. Like the all-new 2019 i3, the i3s model draws energy from the new lithium-ion high-voltage battery with a capacity of 33 kilowatt hours (kWh). And as with the base model, a range extender gasoline engine can be ordered as an option for the new BMW i3s. Which leads to the question: who says your urban commute has to be boring?

tables to performing for Oprah and the Queen. But that’s exactly how life has unfolded for Clifton Murray. As one third of the internationally renowned platinum-selling operatic trio The Tenors, he began performing in his youth as an annual rite of passage while working seasonally in the family business. “My family started a fishing resort in the middle of nowhere,” says Murray, who hails from the Northern Vancouver Island region of Port McNeill. “They found a waterfall and built a dam, miles from any kind of civilization, and created their own hydroelectricity and started the Nimmo Bay Wilderness Resort and invited the world to come and explore the wilderness of the Great Bear Rainforest.” Family-run operation that it was, an eight-year-old Murray began with waiting tables but was enchanted by one of his father’s roles. “After dinner and a long day on the water, my dad would take out his guitar and sing and tell stories for the guests. I would watch from the kitchen door in awe. SPRING/SUMMER 2018 • BrianJesselBMW.com

The Tenors—Victor Micallef, Fraser Walters, Clifton Murray— perform in their signature style.

“He had this ability to just take over a room and connect with so many people from every walk of life through his music and stories. To me, that was the defining moment in my development and my desire to want to be an entertainer and a performer.” At around the age of 12, young Clifton got his chance to finally shine, a moment indelibly embedded. “My dad caught me peeking from the kitchen door, pulled me out and said, ‘Boy, it’s your turn.’ I started singing a song that I’d heard him do a hundred times before, 24

BrianJesselBMW.com • SPRING/SUMMER 2018

that he knew I loved. That connection I felt with my dad was so addictive because he’s a tough, hard-working guy and doesn’t break down that wall too often. But when we’re singing together I felt the love from him.” Soon Murray’s performance adrenaline kicked in: “That audience reaction was a drug for me and I looked forward to it every night.” From that day forward into his early 20s, every summer at Nimmo Bay his father and he would sing for the guests, instilling in Murray a love for songs that were well written, “because all we had was a guitar and

our voices. If the song didn’t captivate you it wasn’t making the repertoire.” So how does one go from singing in a fishing lodge to performing for royalty? Murray still isn’t too sure. “The performing arts field was always where I felt I wanted to be, but in a group called The Tenors, no,” he admits. The ‘pinch me’ moments in the career of The Tenors have been well-documented. For one, The Oprah Winfrey Show performance was career-changing for the group. Murray recalls it as if it were yesterday. “We were told that we were going to be on as part

of “The Next Best Thing” and just thought it was us singing, a chef and a designer and that was it. They quarantined us in the green room and weren’t letting us look at the TVs. We thought this was weird. “We walked toward the stage and start singing, “Hallelujah” and we get two verses in and there’s this guitar solo and people started cheering and clapping wildly,” he recalled. “We just thought, ‘Wow, people really love guitar.’” Unbeknownst to the three singers, Celine Dion had crept in behind them and joined them in song. “Thankfully the friction of pressure had polished our skill so we were ready for it. That went viral and really connected us with a large audience and shot our career off at that moment.”

A PLACE OF ZEN AND SOLACE Clifton with his 2017 X5.

“I like to look good when I’m on the road.” That same week The Tenors performed at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, and shortly thereafter came the royal performances. “Singing for the Queen was one of those, ‘How did this happen?’ moments,” admits Murray. “To go from this little fishing village singing folk tunes with my dad to singing powerhouse songs in front of the Queen for the first time. Wow!” The feeling must have been mutual: to date The Tenors have done five performances for Her Majesty. On reflection, Clifton admits that his role in The Tenors is a blessing in disguise, as there is no greater reward than to have your talent resonate and connect with people all over the world and it takes you to places one could never imagine. “Still today when I have some time off, my dad and I will go to Nimmo Bay, which my brother runs now,” he says. “We’ll do it for old-time’s sake—we just bust out the guitar and sing songs and tell stories.” And what stories Clifton Murray has to tell.

“MY BABY. It’s a beautiful vehicle and adaptable to everything in my life,” boasts Clifton Murray of his 2017 BMW X5. “I like to look good when I’m on the road. It’s sleek, streamlined and the interior is classy and sharp. I love it.” Classy and sharp are two qualities that describe this driver and help him navigate his hectic touring life with The Tenors. Though home time may be precious little, the X5 provides a place of Zen and solace. “It’s one of those places I can go to just to clear the mind and drive,” Clifton adds. “It’s got three different drive levels including Sport Mode, which to my wife’s chagrin I use way too often.” That said, Clifton credits her for convincing him to give up his beat-up pickup truck he’d had since his teenage years. She said, “I love you but you need to upgrade.” “She brought me into Brian Jessel BMW because her family had been going there for years, and the minute I sat in the X5 I was hooked. It’s just a smooth, sleek ride.”

to play golf? An hour? Two hours? Four hours? What if you were behind the Tobiano wheel of a 2018 BMW M5 and the destination course was one of B.C.’s most spectacular? Given that option, let’s make a road trip weekend out of it, play a couple of great courses and drive some of the province’s greatest driving roads. We’ll call it the M5 Golf Loop. The 2018 BMW M5 is the ideal chariot for this trunk-slamming tour, with a rear cargo hold capable of swallowing your foursome’s clubs and overnight bags, and a sport luxury cabin with ample room for you and your golfing buddies. And while the passengers will enjoy their first-class seats as the stunning scenery streaks by, the real joy is in the Winding through driver’s seat. Granted the M5 feels like a tightly harnessed thoroughbred on the congested 100-kilometre drive to Hope, but when the route turns north up the Coquihalla Highway, its time to stretch its athletic legs. Just over two hours later, you arrive on the southern shore of Kamloops Lake at the Lakeside County Inn, your destination for the night. Settle in and stretch your own legs with a tranquil walk along the lakeshore, a hike up to Savona Balancing Rock or hop aboard one of the Inn’s cruiser bikes for a ride to Kelly’s Caboose, an antique store full of treasures. Then it’s back in the rested M5 for a 10-minute drive to Black Iron Restaurant for dinner. An added bonus is this dining experience will give you a teaser of the

Tally up your card during an after-round lunch in the clubhouse, and it’s back behind the sport-steering wheel for an afternoon drive route that is one of the country’s best. And one that provides a true test of the M5’s performance characteristics.

Sparkling in the Sun Domaine Chandon wines have a depth of flavour with a freshness that echoes a breezy day in Carneros.

Domaine Chandon of California’s Napa Valley is poised for a bright future. It would be difficult to consider anyone better suited to shepherd the estate into its next 45 years than Chandon’s current director of winemaking, Pauline Lhote. Lest anyone think the iconic Champagne brand parachuted into the region for an easy play on the name, let’s talk pedigree. Not only was Lhote born and raised in Champagne, she came of age in the industry working with legendary producers like Nicolas Feuillatte and Moët & Chandon. When I recently caught up with her on the phone, she expressed joy in her Carneros surroundings, and the opportunity she’s had over the 12-plus years she’s worked at the Domaine. “It is so lovely here,” she tells me. “When I am making sparkling wine for this house I am looking to do the same things I did in Champagne. This includes expressing terroir and ensuring there is elegance in the glass.” As the vines behind Domaine Chandon age, she finds there is a greater intensity to the fruit. “I’m incorporating less dosage with the current sparkling wines than there has been in the past,” she shares, speaking to the traditional top-up of sweet wine added to the finished wine after the second in-bottle ferment. “There is already such vibrancy, texture and flavour on the palate; the ideal structure is already there.” Indeed, the Domaine Chandon wines have a depth of flavour, yet still carry a freshness that echoes a breezy day in the Carneros sun. There is a minerality to them, adding complexity, and it’s difficult to think of what food pairings wouldn’t work well. This is something many are realizing, as the sparkling wine category has been growing at a particularly rapid pace over the last few years. While once BrianJesselBMW.com • SPRING/SUMMER 2018

The grounds of Domaine Chandon are as spectacular as the grapes produced there. Director of winemaking Pauline Lhote (below) was born and raised in Champagne, bringing a high level of pedigree to her work.

“It can be something to enjoy, even on a daily basis.” considered Saturday evening, special occasion wines, it’s as if many now feel guilt free popping a cork or two on an idle Tuesday night, or even at (gasp!) a picnic. “Oh, that is the best thing,” says Lhote. “For so many people it can now be something to enjoy often, even on a daily basis!” Of course, just as the Guinness always tastes better in Ireland, a visit to the Domaine brings a little extra sparkle to the wines. When asked what attracts regular visitors, she laughs. “Well, of course it’s the wine, but also the grounds here at the winery are beautiful. To sit outside and enjoy the day with a glass of sparkling is something special. I love that people can be casual and just do that, but if they want they can also do a full winery tour and there are educational tastings available; it’s really up to the individual.” And, really, not that any of us need an excuse to raise a glass of sparkling, but the 45th anniversary of this much-lauded estate is more than worthy of a clink of our glasses.

The booming popularity of both pink wine and sparkling wine is on point in this remarkable bottling, perfect for toasting the summer. It’s a ‘traditional-method’ (or Champagne-style) wine, natch, made from Carnerosgrown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The cheery berry fruit includes raspberries, huckleberries and mulberries, while 12 months on the lees brings wonderful fresh-baked sourdough aromatics and a lush creaminess on the palate. A charmer that will work well with hors d’oeuvres, barbecued salmon or liberal top-ups with friends. $32.99. BC Liquor Stores SPRING/SUMMER 2018 • BrianJesselBMW.com

COMPACT BY DESIGN All-new BMW X2 redefines sport luxury crossover segment.

HERE’S A NEW KID ON THE X BLOCK.

The all-new 2018 BMW X2 xDrive28i injects a revitalized sporting spirit into the luxury compact crossover segment, featuring dynamic proportions designed to highlight the automaker’s bold new exterior language. That includes a refreshing reinterpretation of a BMW design cue icon—the kidney grille—turning the familiar trapezoidal shape on its head and instead widening from top to bottom. This is the first time this design detail has seen the light of day on a modern BMW. Also unique to the X2 are the two characteristic BMW features on the C-pillars. First, the hallmark BMW Hofmeister kink is slightly elongated and stops short of the door line. This boosts the dynamic looks of this Sports Activity Coupé. Second, and a premiere on a BMW X model, is the placement of the BMW roundel on the C-pillars, a throwback design cue found on classic BMW coupés such as the 2000 CS and 3.0 CSL. Another marked design choice is the black strip of body trim encircling the body, producing the characteristically robust X model look, while lending visual emphasis to the ground clearance. “The BMW X2 represents an expression of modern and extrovert vehicle dynamics,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President, BMW Group Design. “Its standalone vehicle concept brings a

new, fresh and exciting facet of the BMW to the compact segment.” Helping the new X2 live up to its Sports Activity Coupé moniker is a turbocharged engine, BMW’s renowned all-wheel drive system and a sport-tuned chassis, providing class-beating handling qualities, exceptional agility and superb feedback—in other words, BMW’s patented and unprecedented driving experience. Despite having the same wheelbase as the X1, the all-wheel drive X2 is 3.2 inches shorter and 2.8 inches lower and features a coupéstyle roofline and slim window graphic that combine to give the new luxury crossover a muscular stance. And there’s substance to complement that sporty style in the form of the latest generation 2.0-litre BMW TwinPower Turbo, a four-cylinder powerplant that develops 228 horsepower and peak torque of 258 lbs.-ft. True to BMW’s TwinPower Turbo performance attributes, that torque is effortlessly and instantly delivered for a dynamic and agile driving experience, accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds. 38

Harnessing that impressive power is an 8-speed Steptronic transmission, its wide gear spread granting lower revs at higher speeds and better fuel economy. A BMW hallmark is allowing—strike that—encouraging the driver to take control, and so the X2’s driving responses can be adapted with a push of the Driving Dynamics Control switch, offering Comfort, Eco Pro and Sport modes. The pre-programmed set-up available via Sport mode adds more dynamic steering and powertrain responses, while the optional Dynamic Damper Control adjusts the suspension to better suit individual preferences. Tailoring your own custom interior in the driver-centric cabin is also part of the X2 story. Standard upholstery is SensaTec in either black or oyster, but there are numerous optional leathers to choose from, including four shades of Dakota leather with coordinated contrast stitching and part-perforation. The instrument panel features contrast stitching and decorative stitching as standard,

while the centre console features materials including SensaTec with contrast stitching, and all functional controls are set in high-gloss black fasciae as standard, giving the interior an elegant touch. As beautiful as the X2 is, it hasn’t forgotten that, as part of the X family, utility and practicality are top of mind. To this end the trunk has a capacity of 50.1 cubic feet, able to take on ski weekends, mountain bike tours or a day out with the family. Likewise, the door designs feature large pockets and additional storage compartments. Of all the numerous options available on the already well-appointed base model, the panoramic roof is a must, adding to the sense of spaciousness inside the BMW X2 and bathing the passenger compartment in light. The front section of the panoramic roof tilts and slides open, just like a conventional sunroof. Come to think of it, that’s probably the only conventional thing about this amazing new vehicle, which is currently available at Brian Jessel BMW.

ORDER YOUR 2018 X2 with the M Sport X package and you’ll be getting the best of two BMW worlds: those of M and X. “With the BMW X2 we’re introducing our new M Sport X model variant,” explains Marcus Syring, Head of Design BMW M Automobiles, adding, “It embodies our interpretation of a new, young ‘M’ dynamic and offers a nuanced manifestation of sportiness.” True to the legendary M performance spirit, the package adds a Sport Automatic Transmission for faster upshifts and downshifts, and includes gearshift paddles on the sports steering wheel. Speaking of wheels, the M Sport X boasts 19-inch 722 M Double Spoke wheels available with all-season or performance tires. Choose the optional beefy 20-inch 717 M Double Spoke wheels with performance tires and you’ll be grabbing equal parts traction

and attention. Additional unique exterior features of the M Sport X model include the bumper styling and an M rear spoiler. Attracting the attention of those in the luxurious cabin is the new Aluminum Hexagon Anthracite trim finisher with an accent strip in Pearl-effect Chrome, reserved exclusively for the BMW X2 M Sport X. Three additional trim finishers are available and all include an accent strip that matches the specific trim finisher, as well as contour lighting in the door trim. The standard exterior colour for the BMW X2 M Sport X is Alpine White nonmetallic, against which the wraparound signature shade Frozen Grey produces a stunning visual contrast. Additionally, seven metallic exterior colours are available as an option, including Misano Blue Metallic, Sunset Orange Metallic and the new Galvanic Gold Metallic finish that gives added impact to the character of the BMW X2 M Sport X.

and you’ll come to appreciate not only his uniquely creative mind, but also his passion for blending public art into buildings. As the founder of Westbank, the Vancouver-based real estate development company that has more than $12 billion in projects completed or under development, Gillespie has championed an aesthetic sensibility not often found in the bricks-and-mortar crowd. Every Westbank property—be it the iconic Woodward’s redevelopment, the Shangri-La Hotel, TELUS Garden or the soon-to-open Vancouver House—is teeming with artistic elements, from its initial design to on-site art installations. One of the best examples of this is Westbank’s Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel, the James Cheng-designed green glass tower that helped create the architectural term ‘Vancouverism.’ In addition to the Asia- and West Coast-influenced building being a work of art on its own, the hotel houses a collection that would be at home in a gallery. “BMW has been a great partner.” “For the past five years I’ve been looking at this corner (of the property) wanting to do a sculpture, and we actually had one of my favourite artists from Korea come over and propose something. But it just wasn’t working for me.” Then a chance meeting with Chapel Arts founder Nathan Wiens started a creative journey between the two men. “I met Ian through a real estate thing, and he mentioned he had a bike storage problem,” recalls Wiens, whose Vancouver-based creative woodworking studio focuses on “art, design, and the space in between.” Chapel Arts took that idea and came up with, according to Gillespie, “a crazy sketch” depicting a Ferris wheel-type structure that filled the entire space. The studio’s initial design was, according to Wiens, “a very simple object.” “It didn’t spin, it didn’t open, it didn’t light up,” he says, adding what took it to the next level was whom Wiens referred to as “automation” friends. “They lit it up and made it move. I mean who wouldn’t put bicycles in a pond in a mahogany bike rack with some aluminum and leather trim?” Words simply don’t do the bike rack justice. Gillespie is clearly thrilled with the latest piece of public art to grace one of his buildings, “and then to layer on top of that our 42

relationship with BMW. BMW has been a great partner for us.” Brian Jessel BMW supplies and services all the cars for the hotel, including the 7 Series used for shuttling its guests around. And for the last few years they’ve supplied BMW bikes to the hotel—first traditional pedal bikes and more recently electric bikes. “One of the things we like about BMW— and as a BMW fan myself—is they care about aesthetics,” explained Gillespie. “There’s lots of great engineering out there, but a lot of that great engineering does not manifest itself in great design.” Brian Jessel BMW Managing Partner Jim Murray is likewise a big fan of Ian Gillespie. And his otherworldly bike rack. “Great on Ian,” said Murray at the unveiling. “He’s certainly a creative guy and loves art and the creative factor around his business. I respect him for that.” He’s also pleased that Pac Rim guests will have a chance to check out BMW e-Bikes. “The (e-Bikes) will be fantastic for guests to take out for a leisurely cruise around Stanley Park. It really suits Vancouver.” Just as the BMW e-bikes suit the carousel. “When you look at these white electric bikes, they are not just incredible engineering. Someone has put a lot of time and effort into the design. It’s a gorgeous bike.”

A PEDAL-POWERED BIMMER

SOME AUTOMAKERS might slap their logo on an electric bicycle manufactured by another company and figure that’s enough for the cycling public. That’s not the way they do things at BMW, so it’s little surprise that the BMW Cruise e-Bike is built from the ground up by BMW engineers using Bosch electrical components. “It’s a lifestyle thing for our customers,” Jim Murray notes. “A lot of the stuff I see in the cars I see in the Cruise e-Bike. The carbon fibre, the eDrive technology. It’s definitely a BMW.”

And just recently a new public art installation sprung up, this one adhering to that time-honoured credo of form following function. “I think this just might be the best work we’ve ever done,” Gillespie said at its official unveiling, admittedly somewhat tongue and cheek. “And when you think about it we’ve done some pretty great buildings. But this is just this especially great piece.” What he’s referring to is a bike storage facility for the Fairmont’s fleet of cutting-edge BMW electric bicycles. But as you’d expect from Ian Gillespie, this is unlike any bike rack you’ve ever seen.

13th annual Brian Jessel BMW Cabriolet sparkles in tribute to the City of Light.

n Saturday, April 14th, Brian Jessel BMW transformed into a bubbly return to the joie-devivre of Paris in the Thirties for ‘Cabaret Cabriolet.’ The 13th Annual Brian Jessel BMW Cabriolet Gala in support of pancreatic cancer hosted 350 guests in a black tie event with tables starting at $5,000. Brian’s father Bernie passed away from this horrendous disease in 2010, and Brian has since been committed to the fight. More than $200,000 was raised during the event for the Pancreatic Cancer Canada Foundation. Vancouver restaurants Joe Fortes Chophouse, Hy’s Steakhouse, Bosa Foods and Temper Chocolate provided appetizers and dessert, while main service was provided by the Four Seasons Hotel. The room was decked in Art Déco format with reds, blacks, ambers and greens—it was truly spectacular. L.A.’s dynamic Annie Trousseau was the evening’s headliner with performances by Darlings Cabaret Dance Troop, professional magician Travis Bernhardt and virtuoso guitarist Sandro Camerin.

BMWs run in the family Name: Sandra Goldstone Resides: North Vancouver First BMW you owned? We bought a 2001 e46 325ic convertible in 2003, the day before we got married! We owned that car for two years until we traded it in on our first Tourer when our child was born. What BMWs do you currently own? There’s my 2016 M235 Cabriolet that I just purchased in February 2018 when I upgraded from my 2009 135 Cabriolet. And my husband drives a 2007 M coupé that he purchased in the summer of 2017 after selling his 1988 E30 M3. What is the favourite BMW you have ever owned? That’s a tough question! I think my favourite Cabriolet that I have owned would be the 2001 e46 325ic. It was such a fantastic first BMW. That being said, I am really loving the comfort and power of my M235 Cab! PHOTOS: LUCIA KIM

What BMW model would you love to have in your garage? I would love to own a 2002 Z3 M coupé or a blue 2018 M2. If we are really dreaming I would love to own a BMW 507. That would be a dream!

Sandra Goldstone loves summertime cruising in her 2016 BMW M235 Cabriolet.

What about BMWs appeals to you? We’ve enjoyed being part of the BMW enthusiast community meeting so many fantastic people! I also love the feel of a BMW. Whether driving to and from work or out on a drive, the car is always spirited and it is a joy to be part of the driving experience. Describe your relationship with Brian Jessel BMW: We bought our first Tourer at Brian Jessel BMW in 2005. When it was time to upgrade the wagon we turned to Brian Jessel’s selection again in 2012 to buy our next Tourer (at that time both were difficult to find). We have always found Brian Jessel BMW to have the car we are looking for even when the model is hard to find. That is why we also turned to them for our 2016 M235 Cabriolet (we were specifically looking for this year and model).
