welcome!

Redefining the L word. It’s about time.

Welcome to the premiere issue of Luxury Living. Looking back at the progression of the Canadian luxury market, from its growith in terms of real estate, boutique shops and fine dining restaurants and it’s easy to see that Calgary has come a long way, fast. Calgary has arrived as a world-class city and it now has a luxury market that caters to most every option you could ever want in terms of real estate, shops and services. Our first issue is a snapshot of a few of the best. Along with great style, chic décor and unique places to visit, this issue captures what’s new and what’s ahead in the world of luxury travel, food and fashion. What defines “Luxury” is a personal decision. We still adore our objects, as you’ll see in the pages ahead, but it’s time to redefine the L word and make it more about pursuing new experiences and interests too. Of course, finding the time to do it all is a luxury in itself for many of us. We hope you enjoy our first issue. If you have any questions or comments, please write to us. We’d love to hear from you.

designeradvice

The power of colour by yanic simard photos by Brandon Barre

colour is a multi-billion-dollar industry. It is also the most powerful aspect in the design world. It can change the way you’re feeling, stimulate thought, increase your appetite – it’s really quite phenomenal. You’re drawn to colours that you like when you’re shopping for clothing because you know you’ll feel good when you’re wearing them, and the same thing goes for interiors. Statistics show that most people spend about 90 per cent of their time inside, a large portion of which is in their own home. If you live with colours that make you feel good, it will make for a better quality of life. Deciding which direction to take in terms of colour is where many people tend to panic. My advice is to look through several magazines, tear out the pages that have elements you like, put them all in a folder and, once you have at least 20 different style images, analyze the colours that appear most often. This is a great way to get inspired and decide on colours for your own space.

Paint Particulars I am very particular about colour selection and when I design a space, I like to keep the walls through any open areas in a consistent hue. My entire place is painted in Benjamin Moore’s OC-23, Classic Grey. It’s a very soothing colour that really adapts to the other colours around it – like a chameleon. It’s a nice hue to wake up to in the morning and to fall asleep to at night. The tone of it varies throughout the day with the amount of light; it’s brighter in the day and much richer in the evening. When you’re choosing your paint colour, remember: it’s just paint. It’s not permanent and can be easily changed if you’re not happy with it. People always forget that you can get sample cans from the paint store. Pick up a maximum of three different testers that you like, paint sections of each on different walls (or paint large sheets of white Bristol board and stick them up), and live with them for a few days. (If you give yourself more than three options, trust me, you’ll never decide). Then narrow it down to your favourite two, and then finally pick the one.

Just remember that choosing colours for your home won’t happen overnight. It’s a process that starts with getting inspired; the rest will fall into place. It should be fun, not painful. And if you find that you really can’t do it on your own, it’s probably time to hire a good designer to do it for you.

Get Used to It Choosing a colour palette should never be an impulsive decision; you should take time deciding so you know you’ll be comfortable with it. Once you finally do paint the walls, you might still wonder if you selected the right colour. However, keep in mind that you have to give yourself the chance to live with it. Big changes take time to adapt to. For instance, if you’re going from burgundy to off-white you can’t expect to get used to it within the first few hours. No-commitment Pieces Pillows, accessories and other accent pieces give you the chance to have fun with colour, since they’re ‘non-committal.’ I’ve used hints of blue and green throughout my interior. It’s nice to have your entire residence consistent in terms of colour because then you can move pieces from one room to the next and you’ll never have to worry about making sure it coordinates.

Tamani’s Riversong offers luxurious estate living

by Heather Ryan

Living in luxury doesn’t just involve upscale homes, for discerning buyers who choose to create a dream home in Riversong in Cochrane it also i n cl u d e s b re at h t a k i n g surroundings and stunning views. Backing onto a heavily treed escarpment with the Bow River at the doorstep, Riversong, being developed by Tamani Communities, provides a location that is second to none. “Riversong is a gorgeous area with incredible views of the river valley, the mountains and the town of Cochrane,” says Cam Hart, general manager with Tamani Communities. “Our estate phase is The Pointe, and because of the spectacular views, the topography, the large lots, this high-end product is top notch; you can’t beat it anywhere.” The Pointe consists of 114 lots, 68 of which back onto the treed escarpment featuring those amazing river and mountain views. The majority of the lots are 44-feet wide, but eight lots are 54-feet wide allowing room for triple-car garages, Hart says. Estate homes in The Pointe showcasing exceptional details, fabulous styles and luxurious features and finishes are being crafted by Jager Homes, Jayman MasterBUILT and NuVista Homes and appeal to buyers looking for a cut above. These front-attached garage homes include both bungalow and two-storey designs starting from1,600 sq. ft. and

[12] luxury living SEPTEMBER 2012

ranging up to more than 3,200 sq. ft. with walkouts. Homes that back onto the escarpment are priced starting in the $700,000s, while those on the larger lots are priced at $1 million-plus. Each of the builders have showhomes open in Riversong that feature stunning details and dynamic designs “that are a must see; they are truly outstanding homes,” Hart says. The homes reflect Riversong’s Contemporary Heritage architecture that complements the community’s natural surroundings and provides an overall upscale feel, he says. Homeowners also have the luxury of enjoying nature at their doorstep as 100 of the community’s 340 acres has been set aside as an environmental preserve, ensuring an abundance of green space as well as natural parks, tot lots and pathways that linked throughout the community and to a pedestrian bridge that allows residents direct access to downtown Cochrane.

Situated on the south side of the Bow River and east of Hwy. 22, Riversong offers a convenient location that’s an easy 20-minute drive to Calgary’s west side or the mountains, and just minutes to downtown Cochrane where there is an array of shopping choices from boutiques to big retailers, restaurants, services and other amenities. “People looking for luxury for up to 20 per cent less than northwest Calgary, 30 per cent less than west Calgary, with all the amenities of those locations, are looking at Riversong,” Hart says. “We’re getting a great response because Riversong allows people to come home to luxury, a tranquil natural setting and the charm of small-town living; it really can’t be beat.” For more information on Riversong’s The Pointe, visit the showhomes, open Monday to Thursday, 2-8 p.m., and weekends and holidays, noon-5 p.m., or visit riversongcochrane.com.

Wine cellars a luxurious addition by Heather Ryan

Y

ou may have started out just collecting one or two bottles of your favourite wine, and then purchased a few more and a few more. Before you knew it your passion grew to a point where finding a proper place to store those precious bottles became a must.

Photo supplied by Ultimate Renovations

Whether you’re an avid collector or just enjoy a few bottles around for special occasions there are few things more luxurious than having your own wine cellar. Apart from the extreme pleasure of selecting and sharing wines with family and friends; maintaining the bottles in good condition is a must – wine needs to be stored at the right temperature and humidity – nothing is more detrimental to your wine than extreme heat and cold. For this reason a good wine cellar needs to have a temperature control to store the wines between 10 C and 14 C and humidity control, which should be in the 55-75 per cent range, or you need a cellar with a good wine fridge that will maintain temperature and humidity levels. But while all the technical and functional aspects are necessary to ensure wines remain drinkable, collectors often want their wine cellar to be a focal point in their home where they can proudly put their treasured collections on display.

Photos supplied by Ultimate Renovations

Whether you’re an avid collector or just enjoy a few bottles around for special occasions there are few things more luxurious than having your own wine cellar Danny Ritchie, president of Ultimate Renovations, says wine cellars are a popular addition luxury homes and his company has crafted several different custom designs in the past few years as part of renovation projects. “We’ve built them mostly in larger homes where there is space to accommodate them and a lot of them have been tied into the addition of a bar where the owners can serve their guests and do wine tasting,” he says, noting they’ve created both wine cellars that are fully enclosed with temperature and humidity controls and others that include wine fridges for proper storage. The most typical size for cellars, he says, is five- by eight-feet and made of cherry or walnut with custom cabinets, wine rackets and wine fridges. But Ritchie has constructed a number of luxurious wine cellars that have uncorked the ultimate wow factor. “We put in a rundle stone wine cellar that tied in with a bar and rec room and it was really stunning,” he says. “We added a rounded metal gate for the door and combined with the stone you really got the feeling of entering an old-world cellar. It also had custom cabinets and temperature controlled fridge. “We’ve also done temperature controls rooms with custom racks and storage cabinets

and even one that had an electronic racking system where you push a button and the bottles move along on a conveyor like those you see in some upscale bars,” Ritchie says. The most expensive wine cellar that Ultimate crafted cost the homeowner $100,000 and had “different temperature controlled glass cases for various wines and it was a completely surrounded in glass room with a tasting bistro and metal gates.” One wine cellar design that Ritchie would love to build, but he hasn’t yet, he discovered on the Internet. It involves digging a whole in the basement floor or even in the floor in the garage and installing a spiral staircase going down about eight feet. “Wine racks are put in the walls all the way down on either side of the spiralling staircase; it’s really incredible, and because you’re that far below ground the wine stays cool.” When it comes to the design and materials used, Ritchie says homeowners have been really creative. “A wine cellar is typically a luxury item that people want to show off, so they want them stand out. When you consider you’re creating a showpiece it’s not hard to spend $50,000.” The most popular choice for materials is wood, such as mahogany and cherry, not just because of their gorgeous natural look, but because they’re great for constructing not

only the walls, but also building racks, shelves, drawers and cabinets, and for adding decorative touches such as mouldings and cornices. Natural stone is also great for floors and walls adding an authentic cellar look, while glass presents an ultra modern, urban chic look and gives guests a stunning view of the treasures inside the room. There are a variety of wine racking designs to choose from, as well as lighting styles and your selections will often depend on what type of ambience you want to create in the room. If the wine cellar is going to be temperaturecontrolled as opposed to using wine fridges, glass doors are a good choice because they allow the room’s interior to be on display while the door is closed. Ritchie says the majority of wine cellars they build are in walkout basements of highend homes, but there has been some movement toward building them upstairs off the kitchen so the wines are more easily accessible when entertaining. Regardless of where you build it, when you combine an eye-catching custom design with the latest technology the result is a wine cellar that will not only maintain your treasured wines, it’s a grand addition you’ll savour for many years.

Vibrant, deep and bold, cobalt blue is the colour found in the mesmorizing Grecian seas - and it’s making a major statement in fashion as well as decor this season. Craftsmanship

O

ne should never underestimate the many benefits of creating a vibrant and functional outdoor living space customized for your home. Landscaping is essentially giving your house a home. Professionally landscaping your property provides a sanctuary for your family, friends and pets. Landscaping improves your quality of life, increases the value of your home and adds a little personal flare to your home’s exterior. Your landscape options include custom decks, patios, walkways, garden beds, trees, shrubs, lighting, fences, irrigation, drainage solutions, boulders, retaining walls, water features, and barbecue pits. Clearly there are many aspects to landscape construction and it pays to explore all your options carefully. More importantly hire a company with a strong portfolio and who is open to you talking with past clients.

Your landscape options include custom decks, patios, walkways, garden beds, trees, shrubs, lighting, fences, irrigation, drainage solutions, boulders, retaining walls, water features, and barbecue pits. The key to enjoyment and the longevity of your yard is quality craftsmanship. Landscaping is a process that’s built in layers. Many of the steps are tedious, lengthy and labor intense. Progress can seem slow due to the preparative work required, with most typical contracts springing to life in the final few days of construction. second book to kitchens and baths? Candice If you ask homeowners which rooms they would like to renovate, 90 per cent will say a kitchen or bathroom. It’s the number one project I am constantly approached about. And since we live differently now, our needs and functions have changed, and these rooms can present a ton of choices and challenges to those who embark on a renovation or update. When it comes to these two rooms, a good project can have a big impact on how they live their lives. LC What are some elements that every kitchen and

bathroom should have? Candice People overlook lighting and it’s so important to a room. In my book, there are a number of tips and tricks to make sure you have the right lighting no matter what your lifestyle. Lighting is an amazing tool to bring

out the elements of a room, such as the backsplash in a kitchen or a key item in the dining room. LC Do you for see any top trends in kitchen and

“We have a very strong retail market in Calgary and Alberta, probably the strongest in Canada,” says Ben Brunnen, chief economist with the Calgary Cha¬mber of Commerce. “One of the reasons is because Alberta is full of high income earners and a lot of these incomes are generated in Calgary because of all the head offices that are located here due to the fact that Calgary is an energy hub,” he says. “We have the highest number of executives per capita in Canada, and with that comes higher salaries and a demand for higher-end goods and housing.” At 1.3 million people Calgary is only the fourth largest market in the country, but it has the highest income per capital, with the highest purchasing power, and the highest retail sales per capita in 2011 at $18,284 per 1,000 population, according to figures posted on the Calgary Economic Development website. “So from a retail market perspective, Calgary is a great place to be and it’s attracted a number of high-end retailers” especially over the past few years, says Brunnen. “The opening of western Canada’s first Williams-Sonoma store a few years ago, followed by Pottery Barn, really started the momentum of higher-end brands looking at Chinook Centre,” says Peggy Lim, Chinook Centre marketing director. Chinook Centre recently went through an expansion with 71 new retailers opening, and it now offers consumers approximately 30 unique-to-market retailers, including many that appeal to consumers seeking luxury brands. “Calgarians are well traveled, knowledgeable of U.S. and International luxury brands and wanted access to these brands in their hometown,” says Lim. “This really drove our expansion leasing strategy.

“With the opening of our expansion, we welcomed Calgary’s first standalone Burberry, Tiffany & Co., Michael Kors, Stuart Weitzman,” to name but a few of the premier shopping outlets Chinook was able to attract to this city. At Burberry, luxury shoppers can find handbags for $2,000 to $3,000, some less and some more expensive items are available. “Most of the higher-end brands are extremely customer service oriented as well, so if you see a product on their website that they don’t carry in their store, they can arrange to bring it in for you,” Lim says. Tiffany & Co. is known for its unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that can be valued in the millions, but also has silver jewelry priced below $200. Stuart Weitzman shoes average $400 to $600, with boots priced upwards of $1,000, while Michael Kors has a wide range of product with accessories and leather goods available in the hundreds of dollars. For the executive, Harry Rosen is the answer. The men’s wear store carries several international brands such as Hugo Boss, Armani Collezioni, John Varvatos, Etro, Canali, Ferragamo, Ermenegildo Zegna. A quality suit could start on average $2,000 and upwards of $5,000 depending on the brand. While Lim notes that many of the highend stores at Chinook cater to both customers looking for entry level and higher end price, consumers of luxury brands tend to have a higher-level of discretionary income than the average Another premier shopping destination in Calgary is The CORE (TD Square/Holt Renfrew), Calgary’s only downtown shopping centre, which completed its multimillion dollar renovation in the fall of 2011. The design of the redevelopment project combined three city blocks into an urban streetscape in the heart of the city incorporating not only stores carrying designer labels but also the renowned and revamped Devonian Gardens. “We’ve been seeing a growth in high end stores in the past couple of years,” says Jillian Lucyk, The CORE marketing coordinator, adding that high-end stores such as Holt Renfrew, Harry Rosen and Brooks Brother are among the premier shops offered at the CORE.

FEATURE “These stores are doing well here because Calgarians have refined tastes so many consumers are looking for designer labels,” she says, noting that the newly renovated Birks jewelry store is home to a Rolex boutique – the only one in Western Canada. Canada’s upscale Holt Renfrew is also attracting Calgary’s label-loving fashionistas who are thrilled to discover a variety of highend designer brands such as Chanel, Dior, Gucci and Prada. Holt also takes its customer service for premier shoppers a little higher by offering specialized services such as valet parking, personal shopping and fur services. “Calgary can support a high-end retail market because of the increase in high-end salaries and it has the highest consumer confidence in Canada,” Brunnen says. ‘Calgary has something for everyone – if you want a taste of luxury, you can find it in our city.”

Calgarians have smorgasbord of

fine dining choices by Heather Ryan

When it comes to fine dining it’s not surprising that Calgary offers a smorgasbord of great places to wine and dine.

From inviting exotic dishes to naturally-raised, locally-sourced items, there are a variety of choices available to please discerning palates who want to dine in style at Calgary’s premier restaurants that represent cuisine from around the world. “Calgary has an amazing number of high-end dining establishments and people can find any cuisine they desire,” says Hala Dehais, public relations manager for Tourism Calgary. “Because we have so many head offices here it’s quiet busy during the week with out-of-town guests and a number of conventions, so that keeps the restaurants busy as executives are entertaining clients. “More people are staying downtown after work on Thursdays and Fridays, and visitors are spending time downtown on weekends for shopping or various events, so that has resulted in a greater demand for a variety of restaurants. “People are also enjoying dining as the experience – they’re making an evening of it by sitting down to several courses and sampling different wines,” Dehais says. “As Albertan’s, our private liquor policies allow restaurants to offer an amazing selection of wine and beer that diners can’t get in any other province, so many of Calgary’s top restaurants take advantage of this by providing an extensive wine and/or beer list and suggesting pairings that work well with each dish.” In recent years there has been an increase in the number of Calgarians who want to know where their food is coming from and “they’re willing to spend more money to dine at high-end restaurants,” Dehais says. “The food evolution of locallygrown and locally-sourced food really began a few years back starting with Rouge and the demand has seen the growth of other restaurants with newer places like CHARCUT carrying on the farm to table practice.”

Many of these restaurants change their menus every month, “so there’s always something new, and our chefs are young or young at heart and willing to experiment with new things.” What’s also great about Calgary’s fine dining scene is “a lot of the restaurants offer fine dining in a more casual environment e so people can enjoy high-end fare without having to dress up.” With the help of Tourism Calgary and various websites listed here is a quick glimpse at some of Calgary’s best places to dine: Belvedere Restaurant is considered to be Haute Cuisine and presents the perfect pairing of food and wine providing an extensive wine list to choose from, which you can enjoy during casual fine dining or in the lounge. Who wouldn’t appreciate a menu where every item is prepared in-house from many locallysourced products and offers some exotic choices such as Free Range Rabbit and Quail Egg Carbonara. Catch Restaurant and Oyster Bar was established in 2002 in the historic Imperial Bank of Canada building and offers an urban loft feel. It’s become known for its fresh seafood/shellfish dishes – how about Line Caught Mahi Mahi, Butter Poached Nova Scotia Lobster or Miso Glazed Wild Halibut? Catch works closely with the Vancouver Aquarium Ocean Wise program to make sure they’re offering a sustainable menu. CHARCUT Roast House, a relative newcomer to the Calgary dining scene, uses ingredients that are sourced from small, local artisan farmers and ranchers, with herbs harvested daily from its own garden. The menu is referred to as chef-driven cuisine with Italian and Country French accents and you’ll enjoy selections such as Spit Roasted Spring Creek Prime Rib and Fire Grilled Ewe-Nique Farm’s Lamb Leg. Rouge offers an escape to France’s wine country minutes from downtown in Calgary’s trendy Inglewood neighbourhood. Located in The Cross House, which was originally built in 1891, Rouge is rich with atmosphere and its food is sourced from local growers and its own on-site garden. Its goal is to provide an exceptional dining experience and its menu is delectable. Seared Duck Breast or Carmen Creek Bison Striploin Medallions anyone? Housed in the historic Dominion Bank Building, which was built in 1911 and located in Calgary’s downtown theatre district, Teatro Ristorante is appropriately named since Teatro is Italian for theatre. It serves contemporary Mediterranean cuisine rooted

in Italian tradition so diners can enjoy selections such as Dungeness Crab Risotto, Lobster Tortellini or Driview Lamb Agnolotti. The wine cellar features a wonderful selection of award-winning wines. Located in beautiful Prince’s Island Park, it would be hard to beat the ambience served up by The River Café including lovely park views and the hand-crafted feel of the fishing lodge décor. The menu changes monthly with the seasons, and the availability of organic and free-range products from local farmers and producers. Current menu items include Fraser River White Sturgeon and Olson’s High Country Bison Striploin. Offering one of the most distinctive settings for any Calgary restaurant is The Ranche, with its historical atmosphere and natural surroundings among the trees in Fish Creek Park. The flavours and traditions of Alberta’s ranching heritage live on at The Ranche and the ambience blends rustic with sophistication, while the menu offers delectable dishes from 57°C Wild Northern Caribou to Hog Wild Boar Porchetta. Centini Restaurant and Lounge presents a warm and luxurious atmosphere that makes it one of the most popular restaurants for the city’s corporate clientele. The restaurant serves up a modern Italian take on fine dining and continental European cuisine with choices such as Lobster and Crab Ravioli and Pappardelle Sausage. Of course a stellar meal deserves a stellar wine, and Centini’s collection is a match for any dish. NOtaBLE has an open kitchen with a wood-burning rotisserie where a new burger is created and added to the menu every month – August featured Alberta Lamb burger. The restaurant also presents a gourmet casual style offering a rotisserie menu that changes constantly – with choices like Leg of Alberta Lamb and Rack of Alberta Pork. There also is a great selection of wines to choose from. Muse Restaurant and Lounge allows diners to experience the best of what fine dining has to offer in a casual and relaxed atmosphere that has a variety of choices such as Almond & Honey Glazed Alberta Duck Breast and Yukon Potato Lobster Lasagne, as well as a nice selection from the wine list. The restaurant uses organic meats and produce from local farmers, hand-picking all ingredients and supplies. -

Calgary home to world’s premier horse jumping facility –

Spruce Meadows by Heather Ryan

I

t draws more than 500,000 visitors a year, including royalty, politicians and celebrities and has earned a reputation for being the best in the world.

Spruce Meadows is a premier venue in Calgary and, in fact the world, as it has been officially recognized by the FEI (Federation Equestre Internationale, which is the world governing body for the horse sports) as the No. 1 venue and organization on several occasions. Because of this it lures many of the best riders around the globe including Olympic champions such as Canada’s own gold-medal winner Eric Lamaze (2008, Barcelona) and Brazil’s gold medalist Rodrigo Pessoa (2004, Athens).

“When Spruce Meadows started 37 years we knew the experience had to be unique for the riders, and there was a commitment to making it a leading venue in the world of international horse sports,” says Ian Allison, Spruce Meadows’ senior vice-president. “At the time the major show jumping focus was in Europe, so we wanted to give our venue a European flair by making it outdoors, and we started with a riding hall, stables and a big grass ring and it’s evolved from there. “We also focused on the quality of the events and organization, taking a professional approach to competition management to ensure the riders, our sponsors and the fans enjoy the whole experience.” And it’s seem to have paid off as Spruce Meadows has attracted riders from 48 countries around the world including the U.S., Great Britain, Germany and Brazil, many of Spruce Meadows sponsors have been with the organization since the beginning, and 90 per cent of the fans return year after year. “Spruce Meadows has become a significant piston in Alberta’s and Calgary’s tourism,” Allison says. “If we get 1,000 horses coming in to compete at our major events in June and July each horse has four people who come with it, so that’s 4,000 people who are staying in hotels, dining out, spending money in Calgary, and that doesn’t include the number of fans who come out to watch the events.

“Spruce Meadows is more than just a tourist attraction it’s a destination like the Calgary Stampede and the Rocky Mountains,” he says. “Sixty per cent of our fan base is regional, but 40 per cent of the half-million people coming to Spruce Meadows are from outside of Alberta; they’re coming to Calgary to come to Spruce Meadows. “Those who come to Spruce Meadows for the first time often say they had no idea there was so much here,” he says. “We have 500 acres with a number of different rings for indoor and outdoor show jumping competitions, stables and other facilities,” such as the Georgian Room in British House and Congress Hall that corporations and individuals rent for hosting banquets, weddings, conferences, catered theme events and theatre-style gatherings. “In addition to the FEI sanctioned tournaments we host more than 300 events a year such as trade shows and exhibits,” Allison says – some of the previous notable events held at Spruce Meadows included the G8 summit meetings, the World Petroleum Congress and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, NATO. While Spruce Meadows takes pride in being an affordable, family-friendly venue – you can get in for just $5 and seniors are free – it does have luxury seating available for those looking for a cut above with patio suites, skyboxes and Club International. There are also opportunities to experience more than just the competitions as these guests can walk the course, meet and greet riders, visit the stables and more.

Spruce Meadows is more than just a tourist attraction it’s a destination like the Calgary Stampede and the Rocky Mountains

With these types of facilities available it’s not surprising that Spruce Meadows has hosted royalty with visits from Queen Elizabeth, Prince Edward and Queen Beatrice of the Netherlands, heads of state including Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Governor General David Johnston, and celebrities such as Bruce Springsteen, Tom Selleck and Bill Gates, just to name a few. Since Spruce Meadows began hosting competitions in 1976, athletes have won more than $95 million with some of the top moneyearners at the facility being Eric Lamaze ($3.5 million), Canada’s Ian Millar (2.8 million) and Breezie Madden of the U.S. ($2.7 million). There is more than $6 million to be won at Spruce Meadows during the 2012 season; the biggest pay out being the CN International event with $1 million at stake during the Masters, which ran Sept. 5-9.
