Decoding thecode by MICHAEL NYIKES
Q
A reader wrote asking whether there are any health and safety benefits to installing a toilet with an elongated bowl versus the traditional round bowl.
A
Interesting question with an interesting answer. Most residential toilets have round bowls, but most commercial toilets have elongated bowls. An elongated bowl is 2 inches (51 mm) longer than a round bowl and the extension is toward the front of the fixture. In commercial applications, toilets are exposed to multiple users between cleanings and tend to also be exposed to more frequent misuse, such as soiling the toilet seat and surrounding area. The elongated bowl (typically with an open style toilet seat) reduces the probability of the negative effects of misuse and provides less user exposure to potentially contaminated surfaces. The elongated bowl also has a larger 8 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS OCT - NOV 2013
water surface area which helps keep the inside surface of the bowl clean. So from a health and safety standpoint it appears as though an elongated bowl has more benefit in a commercial setting, however for residential use a round bowl seems to be more than adequate. MAKE A STATEMENT WITH THE
Power of Colour by HEATHER RYAN
FROM FURNITURE AND PAINT TO BACKSPLASHES AND COUNTERS one way to make your home more distinctive and reflect your personality is to add a dash of colour. Colour is powerful because it allows homeowners to make a statement, says Lynn Boulding, interior designer and co-owner of Artisan Kitchens & Renovations with her husband Dave. “Using colour will energize a room and define it and it really sets the tone for the home. “We just went through a phase where dark colours were put only on feature walls, but now we see more balance with strong colours like rust, pumpkin and warm grey on walls throughout the home,” says Lynn. “The last couple of years brown woods were popular, but now we’re seeing more grey, which wasn’t really done before,” Dave says. “For the cabinets – smoky grey, and two-tone colours are popular with darker colours on the lower “Neutral cabinet and counter top colors allows for glittery glass backsplash tiles and strong colors for walls and accessories” (which can be changed in the future!) photo supplied by Artisan Kitchen & Renovations

cabinets and the island and lighter ones above.” Having two different coloured countertops in the kitchen is also a growing trend. “People are picking a lively stone with glittering gold and silver in it for their islands and something calmer for the perimeter counters,” Lynn says. “There is also a much greater selection of products with colours we’ve never seen before.”
Both Lynn and Dave say a backsplash is a great place to add colour and let your personality shine. For example, a recent customer created a backsplash with South American flair that mixed several colours including rustic orange, lemon yellow and green with glass tiles and copper pieces in a tumbled pattern “and it looks great; it’s very refreshing,” Lynn says. They both agree that pastels are out and the colour trend is toward more earth tones that are inspired by nature and Frank Lloyd Wright that reflect Prairie, Shaker and Arts and Crafts styling. “Seafoam green was very popular last year, but this year it’s warmed up with more yellows and we’re seeing a lot more oil-rubbed bronze for handles, faucets and sinks.” “Calgary is really a wonderful place for colour,” Lynn says. “We can go strong because of the amount of sunshine and the angle of the sun’s rays.” She tells clients not to be afraid to add colour on all four walls and ceiling, like browns or burgundy for bathrooms and home theatres, which can result “in a cocoon-like feel that’s visually calming.” When choosing colours, Lynn recommends that you look at what inspires you by going through magazines and clipping out photos you like of cars, fashions and art. “From that we can start to see a pattern emerge and you can use that to help narrow down colour choices for your home.” Lori Monett, sales manager for Pacific Stone Fabrication, says there is a definite trend towards organic coloured stones. “People are selecting slabs with natural hues including aquamarines as they looking for that “back to nature” feel, they want to inject more colour in their home and they’re looking for more interesting stones so their kitchen doesn’t look like their neighbour’s.

They want to make a statement and have that wow factor, but they don’t want the colour to be overpowering 14 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS OCT - NOV 2013
“They want to make a statement and have that wow factor, but they don’t want the colour to be overpowering,” Monett says. In addition, she says, they are also seeing a different set of clientelle who want white in their kitchens and “they’re looking for something that is non-descript, something that doesn’t have any movement; they really want clean and simple. So really we’re seeing the two different types of customers.” Having thousands of slabs in stock gives people a vast range of colours to choose from. “Many people don’t realize how much choice is available now,” Monett says. “Customers can have whatever colour they want and can create something that is uniquely theirs. Also, since we own all of our own material, clients can mix and match colours without having to purchase full slabs.” And you can find colours you want in different backgrounds, which will give completely different looks. For example, Labradorite and Lemurian stones both have the blue and green colours, but one is a creamy background while the other is blackish. “They both go back to that spa-like feel; they’re colours that are very relaxing, look amazing and people love them.” There is also a growing trend toward leathered slabs where the shine is taken off the granite creating a texture. “People love that; it’s something different because it gives the kitchen a different look as well as colour.” On the backsplash, Monett says she’s seeing more glass tiles with metals and natural stone that co-ordinate with the colour palette. While for floors, Travertine is the popular choice, in particular
Travertine Noce (a soft tan colour) and Travertine Navona (a linen colour), “because it’s versatile, every piece is unique and it’s very forgiving in hiding dirt and pet hair.” While kitchens are becoming more colourful, Monett says many people are choosing white and cream for the bathrooms. “We’re doing lots of marble and simple basic colours,” she says, but adds you can add splashes of colour with towels and accessories. “I just came back in April from the High Point Market in North Carolina, which is the largest furniture show in the world, and colour was used everywhere,” says Lori Lee, interior designer with Red Door Home Living, a new furniture store opening Oct. 5 in south Calgary. “There was avocado green, which was just gorgeous, and lots of oranges and reds in fabrics and leathers; there was even a beautiful smoky blue leather. “I think everyone is tired of seeing the brown and black furniture so we’re seeing more colour in furnishings, not just with sofas and chairs, but with tables and accessories,” Lee says. “Blue is really popular for 2014, but all the paint companies are coming out with different colours for 2014 – for Benjamin Moore it’s orange. Colours for home decor follow fashion, so what we’re seeing are reds, greens and oranges in accessories.” Lee says many homeowners are still afraid of colours, but she suggests adding throws, pillows, vases, rugs and artwork is a good way to start introducing colours into a room.
“Sky blue fabric adds a splash of colour to room” photo supplied by Red Door Home Living.
“I’m bringing in these really nice rugs from India that have lots of colour that can really give a room a boost,” she says. “I also have these neat stacking tables; each one is a different colour (red, yellow and blue) and they can go anywhere in the home – the living room, bedroom or downstairs. They’re an inexpensive way to colour to a room.

RENOVATIONS, DESIGN AND FURNITURE
Red Door does it all by HEATHER RYAN
W
hether you’re looking to update your home from a renovation project to new furnishings a Calgary company can make it all happen in just one stop. Red Door Renovations and Design was started by Dan Lee and his wife, award-winning interior designer Lori Lee, two years ago to offer their expert knowledge and skills to customers “with a focus on a level of care and passion that Lori puts into every renovation project; she treats each project as if it was her own,” Dan says. “We also recognized that a lot of people have small- to mediumsized renovations and they couldn’t find renovators interested in taking them on – some renovators won’t touch anything under $100,000 – so we wanted to offer a service to help those people with smaller projects,” he says. “For us it’s about caring and working with clients not just about doing big renos.” After going through the renovating process, they found many clients also wanted help updating their furniture. “They built a trust level with Lori during the renovation and many hired her to replace their furniture.” Rather than shopping at other stores, Dan says, “we felt why not offer this service to our customers.”
So Red Door Home Living, a 4,000-sq.-ft. store in south Calgary, will open to the public on Oct. 5. The store showcases mid- to high-end transitional and contemporary furniture and with a wide variety of fabrics and styles to choose from that can be customized to suit customers’ tastes. Red Door Home Living also offers hard surface floor and tile selections, a lighting line and a variety of accessories – “we’re providing customers a one stop shop.” Customers can also see a display of Red Door’s renovation projects showing a range of possibilities and a kitchen cabinetry display by Jake Klassen’s Kitchen Gallery, which is partnered with Red Door. “We have our own design team so we can help with everything from furniture selection and space planning to renovating your kitchen or bathroom,” Dan says. “When customers choose us they benefit from getting two services in one – Lori is an interior designer and project manager – and we’re price competitive.” For more information, visit the store at #12 15425 Bannister Rd. S.E., call 587-352-6322 or visit www.reddoorhomeliving.ca.

THE DIVERSITY OF CLIENTS ONE ENCOUNTERS AS A DESIGN
COLOUR IS AN EVER CHANGING, UNPREDICTABLE AND SOMETIMES SEEMINGLY ELUSIVE CREATURE. IF YOU THINK THAT LITTLE PAINT SWATCH YOU PICK UP THE PAINT STORE IS EXACTLY WHAT WILL APPEAR ON YOUR WALLS ONCE YOU PAINT THEM YOU MAY BE SURPRISED.
professional is endlessly fascinating to me. There are those who are happy to sign over a defined budget, give us free rein and wait to be delighted. These projects are always a pleasure, as once we have thoroughly interviewed the client to get to know them, their lifestyle and preferences, we can move swiftly to creating that perfect interior. Then there are the others who prefer to be involved every step of the way. While this is more time consuming as it is more consultative, it is a great opportunity to educate these clients and then have the enjoyment of seeing them gain confidence and independence in making selections. Currently working with a very engaged client in the latter category, I found myself essentially discussing Colour 101 with her. As I left her home I found myself mentally making the checklist of the “Most Important Things to know about Colour” as follows:
COLOUR IS NOT CONSTANT. Colour is an ever changing, unpredictable and sometimes seemingly elusive creature. If you think that little paint swatch you pick up the paint store is exactly what will appear on your walls once you paint them you may be surprised. We always recommend that when you make a selection, paint a sample board and look at it at varying times of the day as the light changes, as well as in different locations in your space. We do not all see colour the same way. Colour is processed both in the eye through receptors and in the brain. These differ among individuals and some people are actually “colour blind” with missing receptors or limited processing, while others have enhanced abilities. It is interesting to note that some women, due to their XX chromosomal configuration, have a genetic predisposition to seeing more complex colour. (So ladies, when his socks don’t match his tie, please give him a break!)
COLOUR HAS TINTS AND SHADES. They start as a pure, bright colour (can be defined as a particular wavelength of light). If we add white we change the tint and they become lighter and often tend to softer more pastel shades. If we add a little black the colour tends to become more subtle and sophisticated as the shade changes – these are the colours we tend to use in our homes, with the more pure colours or pastels used in children’s rooms. The fact that not all colours are created equal is one of the most common mistakes we encounter as designers, as people tend to use pure colour when they should be using tints or shades.
OCT - NOV 2013 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS 21
PSYCHOLOGICALLY WE ARE PROFOUNDLY AFFECTED BY COLOUR. YELLOW CAN INDUCE ANXIETY, RED IS ENERGISING, BLUES AND GREENS ARE TRANQUIL BUT CAN BE A LITTLE DEPRESSING. COLOUR HAS UNDERTONES. (This is where things can unravel horribly!) Colours can be complex and have undertones that do not live happily with one another. If you have a red roof and wish to select a neutral warm grey shade for your stucco you have to be very careful that the grey has no green undertone, as it will pop next to the red. I have seen more than a few homes in Calgary where homeowners selected grey, as per current trends, and in the harsh light of day they are now living in purple houses! The subtle red undertone in the grey they selected( which was barely noticeable on the colour swatch) becomes greatly amplified when it is the size of a house. Colours on the opposite sides of the colour wheel bring each other out (red vs green, blue vs orange, purple vs yellow), so in the case of our greys with a red undertone, the green of the front lawn adds insult to injury. This is where it makes sense to hire a professional to help with selections – mistakes are expensive and fairly permanent.
COLOUR HAS PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES. If you paint your bathroom mustard yellow you will look in the mirror and feel ill! Colour will cast a glow upon its surroundings and change how everything looks. If you have a beautiful maple tree outside your window, it will throw a green toned light into the room in summer. In fall it will change to red and in winter when the leaves have all fallen the natural light will come in. In each case it will change the wall colour in the room.
22 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS OCT - NOV 2013
PSYCHOLOGICALLY WE ARE PROFOUNDLY AFFECTED BY COLOUR. YELLOW CAN INDUCE ANXIETY, RED IS ENERGISING, BLUES AND GREENS ARE TRANQUIL BUT CAN BE A LITTLE DEPRESSING.
Psychologically we are profoundly affected by colour. Yellow can induce anxiety, red is energising, blues and greens are tranquil but can be a little depressing. There are both good and bad associations with most colours, and the actual tint, tone or shade of the colour is very important and can have a significantly different effect. As suggested, very bright strong yellows can increase anxiety levels whereas a very soft buttercup yellow can be soothing and serene.
COLOURS NEED TO BE COMBINED THOUGHTFULLY. Mondrian, the artist who painted the famous pieces consisting of black lines incorporating squares or rectangles of red, yellow and blue is a perfect example of demonstrating visual balance and proportion perfectly. If you add accent colours to a space, there is a certain requirement for placement in that space, as well as the amount of accent colour that will work best. Intensity and saturation of colour is important as well as the texture of the material they are on. I recently was in a lovely home where the owner loved vibrant colour and had richly textured satin throw pillows in very saturated greens
OCT - NOV 2013 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS 23
and purples on the black leather sofa. The combination of intensity, reflectivity from the shiny fabric, and texture from all the ruffles created a very strong visual impact which was not mirrored on the other side of the room. A redistribution and minimising of pillows was all it took to restore the balance without sacrificing the overall look. Overall, working with colour is not easy as there are many aspects that need to be considered, which is why so many homes are safe and neutral. However the rewards of taking a few risks and being adventurous pay off handsomely, and an injection of colour can bring energy and a sense of joy to your home. If you do decide to go that route, there are some great books and websites on colour theory. It is well worth learning a few basics before you pick up the paint brush or purchase the accessories. Alternatively consult a professional – they usually extend their paint store trade discount to you which will more than make up for the consultation fees!

HOME OWNER TRADE PERMITS by VANESSA GASH MOST HOME RENOVATION PROJECTS INCLUDE ELECTRICAL
and/or plumbing work to complete the construction. This work should be completed by qualified tradespersons who will obtain the appropriate permits prior to completing the work. Alternatively, homeowners who meet the requirements and are knowledgeable in electrical and/or plumbing work may obtain a home owners permit to conduct some of this work themselves. Home owners applying for electrical and plumbing permits must meet the following criteria: 1. You must own the home. 2. You must live in the home. Work on a rental or revenue property must be conducted by a qualified licenced tradesperson. 3. You must conduct the work yourself. This means you are not permitted to obtain a home owners permit and have a friend, family member or contractor do the work for you. 4. The home must be a single family property. We commonly receive calls here in building regulations regarding what portions of work are able to be completed with a home owners permit and which items require a tradesperson. The breakdown below should help answer those questions. Most plumbing within a home may be completed under a home owners permit. This includes installing plumbing fixtures, venting, waterlines, replacing sewer and underground work on the property right up to curb stop at the street. All work must adhere to the National Plumbing Code of Canada 2010 and the City of Calgary Water Utility Bylaw. Further important information and homeowner responsibilities are available online at www.calgary.ca. Homeowners are not permitted to do any work that involves natural gas. Permits for this work must be applied for and the work done by a certified mechanical contractor. With a home owner electrical permit you are only allowed to work from the ‘load centre’ portion of the electrical panel. Work on the consumer service side of the panel, the portion from the supply authority to the disconnecting breaker is not allowed. Your permit covers the wiring of switches, receptacles, lighting and other outlets for new and renovation work. You may also work on a detached garage including underground wiring. Because the electrical permit allows only two inspections (rough and final), the underground and the garage rough inspection should be ready at the same time. The rough

inspection is when all the boxes are installed, the wiring is installed in the boxes, splicing is done and the bonding wires are secured to the back of the boxes (the switches and receptacles are not to be installed for this inspection). All work must meet the requirements of the Canadian Electrical Code. The City of Calgary website www.calgary.ca provides a ‘Homeowner Permits and Electrical Wiring Guide’ which describes methods of installation that have been successfully tried and tested over a number of years. These include detailed diagrams that homeowners may find helpful. Items not covered on a homeowner’s electrical permit include any work which was completed and concealed prior to inspection, changes to the main electrical service, pool grounding and electrical equipment connections for permanently installed swimming pools. Additionally, if at any time your electrical inspector deems that the installation could be hazardous to life or property you as the homeowner are responsible to hire a qualified electrical contractor to obtain a permit and complete the work. Although doing your own electrical and plumbing may seem less expensive and more convenient, it is only recommended if you are knowledgeable in these areas. If you have a basic knowledge of wiring, plumbing installation and venting requirements, then a home owner’s permit may be the right choice for you. If not, it may be best to leave it to the professionals. The goal is to complete your home improvement project safely and in a code compliant manner. Information on permit requirements is available online at the www.calgary.ca website. If you have specific questions about Building Code, electrical or plumbing requirements please call 311 and ask for the (TAC ) Technical Assistance Centre. Safety Code Officers in all disciplines are available Monday to Friday from 8am-4:30pm to answer your questions.

RENOMARK
A home renovation
starts earlier than you think by BRYAN TUCKEY
PLANNING A RENOVATION THIS FALL? I would like to use this opportunity to review some tips from professional RenoMark contractors to ensure your project goes as smoothly as possible. The Canadian Home Builders’ Association asked a group of renovators what design and planning advice they most often give to their customers, and their first response was: know why you want to renovate. Ask yourself; what problems are you trying to solve? Most renovations begin with practical issues such as a cramped bathroom, a need for additional storage space or a change in household formation that requires children’s playrooms or studies.
It’s also important to evaluate the structure, systems and general condition of your house. With your renovator, list the repairs and replacements likely to be required over the next two, five and 10 years. If necessary, be prepared to make trade-offs between lifestyle improvements and work needed to keep your home in good shape. You can save money by working with some of your home’s hidden strengths. Check under existing carpeting and sheet flooring for old hardwood flooring or refinish old trim and moulding rather than replace it. Keep in mind that it is more cost-effective to resurface cabinets rather than install new ones. Focus on keeping things simple. You’d be surprised how quickly a complex design can result in complicated and expensive construction. Whether you want to build on to your home, change roof lines or reconfigure interior space, consult with a professional renovator on the impact of design on construction and budget. Less complex designs will often let you achieve the same goals but, in a more affordable way. Don’t cut corners and just focus on the upfront costs. Renovation is a further investment in your home. Consider the time, energy and cost required for ongoing maintenance and possible replacement down the road. A well-planned renovation can reduce these future costs. There may be ways to stretch a limited budget, but don’t compromise on quality as you may end up paying for it later. Most importantly, if a job is too big to handle yourself, hire a professional. Your home is quite likely the largest asset you own, and you are placing it in someone else’s hands. Make sure that this person carries all applicable licenses and permits, carries liability insurance, offers a warranty on all work and provides a detailed, written contract for every job. These are just a few points that distinguish a professional renovator. A good example to go by is the RenoMark Code of Conduct, which every RenoMark member has agreed to abide by. The program, which dates back to 2001, is available across Canada in eight provinces and 38 communities. Visit renomark.ca to learn more about the website’s search feature, which can help you find a professional renovator in your area. Don’t delay, because the best renovators start planning their projects months in advance – and so should you!

BASICstaging… by LAURA LE LET’S BEGIN WITH THE EXTERIOR. AS THE SAYING GOES “you only get one
chance to make a great first impression” this applies to everything we do including selling our homes. Stand in front of your property and look at it objectively; remove anything that is not pretty. Store items such as excess flower pots especially if they do not have any plants in them or are too small for the space and the raccoon holding the welcome sign or the frog lounging on its back or laying in a hammock. These things look adorable but can add to the clutter both outside and inside. Having a “Welcome” mat is lovely but a “Welcome to Our Home” or “Welcome to the Nut House” is not. The mat must be generic and not specific to anyone. Silk plants in pots outside in the winter are not okay either as they are not fooling anyone; no one has that green of a thumb. Please remove Christmas lights as soon

as the weather permits as well. If space allows a couple of chairs and a small table creates a nice vignette and is welcoming to buyers. It also makes the neighbourhood feel very friendly. Okay, now for the interior. De-clutter… everywhere! This especially includes closets, pantries and cupboards. Buyers will be looking inside the cupboards when they are looking at your home. They are going to be considering all storage areas to see if their stuff will fit. Storage space is important to everyone because most of us have
a lot of stuff. Make sure the floor is visible in the closets and the pantry and everything is as neat and clean as possible. Baskets and bins containing the small, unruly items like make up, toothbrushes and hair product. It is a good idea to have a basket for each person in the bathroom that can be brought out for use and returned under the cabinet daily so everything is ready for a viewing and there is none of that

panic and wondering if everything is put away when you get a call that an agent is bringing a client over to see your property. Now let’s consider the furniture; remove and unnecessary small side/decorative tables. They tend to also be holding small unnecessary candles or knickknacks. Pack away some of the stuff in the china cabinet keeping whatever it is that you have the most of visible. This means if you have an entire set of china from your Aunt Mable leave it in the cabinet and pack the rest of the miscellaneous things that tend to add to the visual clutter. Chrystal looks beautiful in a china cabinet especially if the cabinet has lights. Okay, now it is time to remove the things that we are so used to looking at that we don’t even see them anymore. These items include various mats on the floor, toilet brushes, plungers, waste bins and tissue boxes. None of these are pretty to look at and that is why they are not used as décor in show homes. Same principal applies to fans, they suggest the possible need for air conditioning and space heaters scream the lack of heat circulation. Plants must be healthy and robust. Preferably no dried flowers and only beautiful silk flowers, please. Get rid of those blue and pink arrangements from the
eighties along with the valances that co-ordinate with them. Sadly, it is best to remove as many traces of pets for viewings as possible. This is a tough one for me as I am a pet lover (except spiders!) not everyone loves them. It is ideal if the pets are out of the property for showings and everything that they lay or chew on is hidden. And what they eat and drink out of as well. The same principal applies to the children. Toys should only be in their rooms and possible the family room as long as it is not the first thing the potential buyers see when they walk in. the colours toys come in are not always esthetically pleasing in large quantities and it can be difficult to incorporate them into the colour scheme. Try to keep toys in rooms where they can be quickly put away in bins, baskets or even a large storage ottoman.

LAURA LE CREATIVE ENHANCEMENT INC.
Keeping a property perfect for viewing can be a daunting and unrealistic task. It can be made easier if excess items are already stored and only what is needed is readily accessible or easily hidden out of sight. Who knows… maybe when you get to the new house you will realize you don’t need those small side tables or the candle that was sitting on it.

HOME AND DECOR
Modern mixing with real housewives WHILE IN VANCOUVER EARLIER this year as part of my
Western Canada media tour, I took a lot of inspiration in what the beautiful and busy city has to offer. Bringing the Cityline cameras with me, I visited the homes of inviting Real Housewives of Vancouver Amanda Hansen and Jody Claman, and found many great examples of my rules for mixing and matching your decor. Here are some ways you can bring real personality in your space, inspired by two ladies with character to spare. SLEEK AND SUBDUED Amanda Hansen’s house, home to an artistic family, creates the perfect harmonious backdrop to creative projects (and the occasional messy experiment). Amanda’s interiors start with a simple palette: her white wall colour lets the 100+ year old architecture speak for itself without fighting the furnishings for attention.
include at least five: paint, paper, velvet, silk, cotton, linen, wool, leather, metal, glass, wood, stone, plastic and plant life. It’s easier than it sounds: Amanda’s space mixes a wood table, metal and plastic chairs, leaded glass windows, painted walls and multiple fabrics (sleek draperies and plush upholstery) before even getting to the accessories. 2. Add Modern Classics the “Modern” period in furniture
design is actually decades old, but timeless. Any home can benefit from the inclusion of a BRNO cantilevered steel-frame chair or, like Amanda’s house, a moulded plastic Eames-style seat — either infuses some sleek textures into your palette without appearing cold. Dabbling in a little modernism actually adds personality that will make a space feel even more like your space. GET THE LOOK Invest in the Eames classic from DWR.com, or
find a look-alike in many furniture boutiques.

it’s my favourite clean and neutral white, free of green, beige or yellow undertones. HERE ARE 4 MORE WAYS TO CREATE A CLEAN, CONTEMPORARY MIX LIKE AMANDA’S 1. Feel It Out Whether making a traditional or modern mix, it’s
important to use a range of textures to keep a stark palette from feeling sterile. Consider this list, and make sure to 38 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS OCT - NOV 2013
3. Create a Rhythm While contrasting periods and materials, remember to keep a thread of consistency between pieces where possible: by repeating elements, you create a look that is purposeful rather than haphazard. For example: the combination of metal and clear glass/plastic is found in her leaded windows, glass-doored cabinet and cantilevered side chair. Reusing touches of a material throughout creates a rhythm that guests will sense, even if they can’t put their finger on it.
4. Light the Way A consistent feature throughout the space is the use of “Edison Bulbs.” Combining these glowing-filament bulbs with architectural clear glass shades creates a mix of old and new that fits the home’s old-world character and creates a warm, glowing ambience. You can find these bulbs at many decor shops for an inexpensive upgrade to an existing sconce or pendant.

Her space includes oversized art (such as a wall-filling painting and life-sized pink statue) and a baby grand piano — dressing even a small room with pieces that make you say “wow” will bring more satisfaction than compromising on compact clutter.
à
BIG AND BOLD Jody Claman’s home, designed for a chef with a spicy personality, makes BIG statements: although her space uses lots of white (like Amanda’s), it’s kept to her eclectic furniture, and her walls are far from a blank slate: soft pink makes for a near-neutral with plenty of personality.

GARAGES
THAT GO THE DISTANCE GARAGES DO A WHOLE LOT MORE
than protect your family’s vehicles from the elements. According to The Calgary Foundation, Calgary has one of Canada’s highest vehicle ownership rates per capita. As a result, Calgary’s CarShacks, recommends a two-vehicle garage, even if your family has just one vehicle. Since 1999, CarShacks has built thousands of garages in southern Alberta. In Calgary a double vehicle garage is well worth the return on the investment at resale. According to the Appraisal Institute of Canada (AIC), a garage will typically offer a 50 to 75 per cent on the investment although it doesn’t specify the size of that garage. CarShacks suggests a two-car garage
is worth the additional cost because some Calgary homebuyers will see a single-vehicle garage as a teardown. Calgarians are typically multi-car families and prospective buyers may automatically take the cost of tearing down a single-vehicle garage and building a two-vehicle garage off the asking price. Typically, each vehicle requires 10 feet in width and 20 to 22 feet in depth but if, like so many Calgarians, you love your oversized pickups, you’ll need at least 12 feet in width and 24 feet in depth, as well as a door that’s eight feet tall versus the standard seven feet. The building code requires both a vehicle and a passage door. CarShacks always makes the passage door opening three feet wide.
Homeowners don’t think to ask for the extra-wide door until they’re trying to wrestle a snowblower, wheelbarrow or patio furniture through it, so CarShacks made it a standard feature. When determining the size of your garage, ask yourself how much of your backyard space you are willing to sacrifice to the garage. While storage is typically the most common secondary need, some homeowners also create an additional finished heated room. A Calgary piano teacher even had a small studio installed in the garage to free up the family living room and give her family more privacy and quiet time. “True living spaces are increasingly common, but still relatively rare," because of restrictive building codes. Make a wish list, then use it to plan your garage based on your family’s needs and the return-on-investment that makes sense for you.

Painting your backyard the
COLOR OF JOY by JACKIE SWARTZ
AS WE APPROACH THE HARVEST MOON ONE CAN’T HELP NOTICE the shifting palette that fall offers. In some parts
of our country we call them leaf peepers, those people that take tours to witness and photograph the full expression of the season. Fall leaves ranging in colors from burnt siennas to the deepest golds. Sunshine freckled leaves interspersed among our beautiful spruce or pines. The local highlight is the exciting spice of larch trees showing off their brightest yellows. Capturing the beauty of these colors can be created in your own garden by planning with a landscape designer and a perusing a host of garden magazines. Landscaping combines principles and elements to ensure functionality as well as producing aesthetically pleasing outdoor rooms. Color is the most challenging element to work with in a residential landscape. However, when assisted with the help of a professional landscape designer a combination is found that is rewarding. Color brings the landscape alive and sets the mood as well as stimulating our emotions. Warm colors such as reds, oranges and yellows express our passion and excitement; whereby the cool colors of greens, blues, and violets express calmness and 42 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS OCT - NOV 2013
balance for optimal harmony. Color is used in the landscape for many different reasons. 1. To enliven our outdoor settings 2. Accent certain areas that you want to stand out, like a walkway or a front door, 3. Harmonize the exterior landscape with structural colors unifying the overall design of your space, 4. Color is a wonderful tool to compliment and harmonize a variety of plants found in your beds, 5. Eco-friendly colorful gardens also attract butterflies, birds and animals by simply including certain colors in your planting 6. Color provides variety and interest creating beauty that lasts throughout all seasons. Let’s start with a basic palette of red, yellow and blue known as our primary colors. When these primary colors are combined, secondary colors are produced. In other words, mixing two adjacent primary colors on the color wheel produces orange, green, and purple. Now to complicate things even more, there are tertiary colors. Tertiary colors are achieved by mixing one primary and one secondary color together. For example mixing red-

COMBINING A WHOLE AREA OF COOL COLORED PLANTS TOGETHER CREATES HARMONY AND BALANCE. THE SAME HOLDS TRUE BY COMBINING WARM COLORS IN ONE AREA AS WELL. Some color definitions are: » Hue: the purest form of any color, without adding black, white, or a compliment. » Tint: Colors lightened by adding white » Tone: Colors that have gray added to them » Shade: Colors that have black added to them » Key Color: Dominant color in a color scheme or mixture » Neutral Gray: Combination of black and white » Intensity or chroma: the strength of a color. The intensity of a color can be reduced by its complementary. For example, the intensity of green can be reduced by adding red, eventually resulting in gray. » Value: The lightness or darkness of a color E.g. light or dark green » Achromatic: A colorless scheme using whites, blacks and grays » Analogous: A combination using two or three colors on the color wheel. For example; yellow and yellow-green
orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, and red-violet gives a wider spectrum of color. For those that love simplicity, a mono-chromatic palette uses any shade, tint, or tone of a single color. I have seen gardens that just have one color in them, such as pink or yellow. And for those who love the purity of a white garden in Calgary may I suggest trees that have snow white blooms to celebrate spring time such as a Malus ‘Combination’ apple tree or a Prunus Mayday tree. Also, shrubs such as Rosa ‘Morden Snowbeauty’ rose, Spiraea x arguta ‘Garland spirea’, Potentilla fruticosa ‘Snowflake potentilla’. Finally, lets include some perennials such as Iris sibirica ‘Snow Queen’, Gypsophila repens ‘Alba’(creeping baby’s breath), or Chrysanthemum x‘Morden Cameo’.
Combining a whole area of cool colored plants together creates harmony and balance. The same holds true by combining warm colors in one area as well. Cool colors mirror our natural world of water and dew kissed grasses and may include reds with a blue tint such as rose and burgundy. On the other hand warm colors mirror the sun and fire. For example, here is where we experience the golden rusts, deep oranges, peach and any variation of these colors. Using and combining color stems from personal taste. A spectrum of color that speaks to you will be one that you enjoy. Don’t limit the joy of the front yard; and bring some color to your back yard as well. Often the back yard is where family members can enjoy and relax amongst the blossoms. Cool-season bedding plants work well in hanging baskets and containers. Also may be placed on a deck or patio. When planting, be aware of the amount and combination of color chosen for showy results. Too many colors at once can be overwhelming. Mass planting in groups is important especially if you want to view an area from a distance. Cool colors can make a home look further away and warm colors produce the impression that the home is closer to the street. Pastel colored plants are bright and great for shady areas. They tend to show up better at night and in low light areas. Another benefit of pastel colors is that they tend to make a small planting area appear a lot larger. Vibrant, rich colors can make a landscape come alive and also make a large area seem smaller. By combining complementary colors from the color wheel, you can make a landscape cheerful. For example; scarlet red roses or ruby red geraniums against a variety of greens is joyful to view. My preference as a landscape designer is planting feature perennials. Sometimes I create a stepping down affect by planting tall perennials in the back. I am known to repeat a color from the back and incorporate that same color as a front border. The purpose of this brings the perennial combination in alignment making the garden look and feel balanced. For example; I used yellow in the back ground and repeat that same yellow close to the ground. Please review the following example: OCT - NOV 2013 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS 43
» Back of bed: Liatris spicata ‘Gayfeather’ Liatris (purple), Heliopsis helianthoides False Sunflower (yellow), Monarda didyma ‘Marshall’s Delight’ Bee balm (hot-pink), » Middle of bed: Achillea filipendulina ‘Moonshine’ Yarrow (yellow), Salvia x sylvestris Blue Sage (purple), Chrysanthemum ‘Morden Candy’ Mum (pink), Helictotrichon sempervirens Blue oat Grass (blue), » Front border of bed: Geranium sanguineum Bloodred Geranium (pink), Euphorbia polychrome Cushion Spurge (yellow) This second example demonstrates a garden using an analogous color scheme. » Back of bed: Berberis thunbergii ‘Rose Glow’ Rose Glow Barberry (rosepink). Lychnis chalcedonica Maltese Cross (red), Echinacea purpurea Purple Coneflower (purple), » Middle of bed: Dictamnus albus Gasplant (pink), Erigeron speciosus Fleabane (pink), Perovskia atriplicifolia Russian Sage (soft purple), » Front border of bed: Heuchera ‘Palace Purple’ Coral Bells (purple foliage), Dianthus gratianopolitanus ‘Cheddar Pink’ Pinks (Pink), Armeria juniperifolia Spnaish Thrift (pink) Once you have created one perennial combination, you can create another one to compliment the first one. Try using a combination of plants that benefit you for each season. For example; when the spring blooms die, then perhaps plant summer blooming flowers as a follow up act. Keep in mind choosing colors that you like and enjoy will enhance time spent working in the garden.
Even in the harshest conditions don your favorite colored croc’s and have fun producing a color scheme that speaks of your personality and love of gardening. After all, your yard is a living canvas created by you and carrying your signature of style. This is the power of color.

Are You A Victim Of
The Moody Blues?
by ADENE LUCAS
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE COLOR? Most of us can think of the answer quickly as it is one of those questions we have come across since childhood. Color is woven through all aspects of our lives and plays a very important part in how we feel and respond. It impacts everything from the color of vehicle we drive, to the color of the clothes we prefer to of course, the mother of all color ... paint ! The colors you use in your home can have a profound effect on the emotional state of those who live there. This may sound very dramatic and scary but if you read about color psychology there has been a lot of documented research on this very subject. Retailers, restaurants, hospitals and even sport teams live by color psychology because they recognize that color is a universal, non-verbal language. 46 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS OCT - NOV 2013
Paint color can send people into fits of panic and anxiety. I’ve been to many clients’ homes where they have a large assortment of mini paint chips which they have been agonizing over. First of all, they are on the wrong track because the lighting in the paint store is fluorescent which gives off a cool, slightly bluish light thus the color changes once they get the samples home. This can be confusing. If you are selecting cool tones in a blue or green range that’s great but if you’re picking a warm tone the color will look very dull on the walls. Light influences how paint reads. If you have incandescent bulbs they provide a warm amber hue. This makes paint colors like red, yellow or orange appear more intense. Halogen light is the closest to replicating natural light. It doesn’t distort color as much as the other light sources and it’s mostly white and bright. Of course natural light, which is what comes through your windows, is ideal but even that changes depending on the position of the sun. If the room is north facing, the light will be softer and warmer. Southern exposure has the most intense light which gives you the option of a darker, richer color as the room will be flooded with sun. The best way to determine

how natural light will affect your paint selection is to get either a sample tin or a large swatch that can be placed around the room. Now you can feel better about choosing the “wrong” color. It’s just not that simple and the adage that I hear often, and disagree with is, “it’s only paint”. Although this may be true, it is also your time and money so getting it right the first time saves both. There are many elements that will influence the way a color reads, not just the type of lighting. Objects in the room can affect the color perspective because they absorb and reflect light. That’s why the paint on the walls may appear to be the wrong color even though you agonized over it forever!
48 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS OCT - NOV 2013
Particular colors can be more or less affected by light. Whites and off whites may seem simple but they can appear yellow, grey or washed out in different lights. This is also true for pale shades of other colors. However, whites and other light colors can also reflect hues from other objects in the room such as furniture or flooring. Colors like beige, khaki and sage green are sometimes the worst offenders when it comes to changing color under different light. Regardless of the paint chip, if you get the color rolled out and in one stroke see something you don’t like, such as a green under tone, stop painting because you will always see it that way and not be pleased. I recently had a client pay a large sum of money for an exterior paint job and called me because the color she copied from a neighboring house was all wrong. It appeared to have a pink undertone and every time she looked at her house she was distraught as she
saw pink. The real issue in fact was that the door was a cranberry color which was bleeding into the new exterior muddy brown. I suggested painting the door a flat black as well as the trim. Problem solved. Unless you have done your homework, paint selection is best left to the professionals. There is nothing worse than rolling out the first few strokes and realizing it doesn’t look like that little paint chip. Recently I was at Sherwin Williams looking over their new color forecast. A couple of the pages looked like wonderful nail polish samples with names like “Feverish Pink”, “Electric Lime” and “Gladiola” to name but a few. The colors were high voltage, intense and bold. In the right application these colors could really be fun. Another palette featured was more sedate and featured names like “Safari” and “Spiced Cider”. Even without seeing the actual color swatches it’s easy to envision what these colors look like based on the names. I always think it would be fun to have a stack of paint chips, a group of friends, perhaps some

cocktails and pick the names for colors. I am sure that’s exactly how it’s done too! How else would you get the name “Mexican Sand”? If you’re not into the latest greatest paint colors and are still trying to decide how to begin, think about your favorite colors and what is in your home. For example, think about your furniture, the flooring, window treatments, stone work and other fixed pieces. Try to select colors based on what you have and build from there. If this space is vacant and anything goes, then simply use colors you like, that are not difficult on the eye, and which can coordinate well

with other shades. It is also important to think of the room and function that the paint is going to be in. For example, if painting the master bedroom is the project, then the goal would likely be to have a relaxing, soothing, color. Cool blues, greens and lavender are great choices because they have a calming effect. It is generally thought that the darker the hue, the more calming the effect. In general darker colors make a room appear more intimate and lighter colors make a room look larger. The next time you’re looking at an endless supply of paint chips and perhaps feeling overwhelmed, keep this article handy. There is a lot more to picking a color than simply liking it.

QUICK FACTS ON THE LIGHT BULB ›› Uses 84 per cent less energy than a typical incandescent. ›› Based on Cree LED bulb 60-watt replacements at 9.5 watt, $0.11 per kilowatt-hour, 25,000 hour lifetime and average usage of 6 hours per day.
How do you bring your love of the environment to the set of Vampire Diaries? These LEDs will be in every socket on the Vampire Diaries set and we have 365,000 sq. ft. of space, which is massive. This company is a game changer in the world of lighting, which ultimately bleeds into a multitude of facets of our life – saving energy, improving air quality and public health. I want to be a part of that and share that with everyone. What are your goals for this "game changing" light bulb? It’s my goal that every single school in North America will have these LED bulbs. It's about getting out there and explaining that this company exists and letting them know they can cut their energy consumption and save money. For instance, the light bulbs that are around, where do they go? We just throw it away, but where is away? There is no away. It ends up in landfills – which ends up in our water supply and else where. Cree Inc. has eliminated the toxic element and they have provided a consumer based product that you can feel good about, save money and also reducing the impact on our resource pool. What drives you to do all of this? I can’t imagine doing anything else. I think if you have this much access to the public, then it’s your social responsibility to take the information you have with products and relationships you have and allow that information to be free flowing. And if you are activated and empowered by this information, share it, that is how things get done. At the end of the day, it’s about consumer education, public education – it's the only way information travels and we have changed the game with social media and all the free flowing information that is available. What do you do to spread the word? I tweet like a maniac and share with my fans the information that I have and I find, hopefully reaching all different kinds of people. Follow Ian at @iansomerhalder

DESIGN INSPIRATION

HD&R CHATS WITH KIRSTEN KORHANI, chief designer and creative director at Korhani Home, who has been leading the way in merging style and fashion for home. Her innovative designs, affordable floor coverings and decorative accent pieces have driven the brand to create products that have become statement pieces in homes across the globe.
What role does design play in your life? Design plays a huge role in my life. I’m always looking for inspiration for our next collection which can come from anywhere — through my travels, movies, the latest fashion trends, and magazines.
colour guides for each theme in the collection that we feel will be on trend for the following season. The rug qualities and designs are based primarily on the time of year. For example, our fall/winter ’13 collection, we focused on qualities such as wool and heavier shags, and worked with a deep colour palette. As for spring/summer ’14, I can’t give too much away but expect to see bright, bold colours and patterns made with qualities like flat weave and plastics. Once we have finalized our collections and style guide, we go to work on the individual designs. And then from there, final drawings are sent to our manufacturing facility in Sorel, Quebec to begin production.

Q
You’ve married into the Korhani family company, what is it like working with your husband? Some people may find it challenging to be around each other that much, but for us it just works. We are always brainstorming together, and constantly pushing each other creatively. Some of our best ideas have come from a drive to the cottage for the weekend, or over a glass of wine and a movie.
Q
Can you take us through the design process of creating a collection of rugs? The design process starts with an inspiration meeting with myself and the Korhani Home design team. We come up with conceptual items, mood boards and

You masterfully marry fashion and décor together for your runway presentation during World MasterCard Toronto Fashion Week and it’s a huge hit each season, why do you think fashion and décor go hand-in-hand, and how hard is it to make rugs into fashion garments? I’ve always felt that home and fashion were a natural fit. If you choose to dress fashionably in your everyday life, why wouldn’t you look at your home in the same way? Why not change your area rugs the same way you do your clothes and accessories each season? Our runway shows are an opportunity for us to showcase collections based on what will be on trend in home décor the following season.
I’d be lying to you if I said it wasn’t challenging to create garments out of rugs. It takes a full team and around six to eight months to create a runway collection from beginning to end. The process starts with collecting inspiration, choosing themes, designing the rugs and of course, sewing and accessorizing the outfits. Sometimes you have this great idea and you really want it to work, but you don’t have the same flexibility with rugs as you do with fabric.
WIN HIS! T
Q
How important is a rug’s role to the design of the room? An area rug anchors and finishes a room. I tend to think of area rugs as the fashionista of floors. It really pulls together your living space and completes the look and feel. It’s a statement piece that gives you an opportunity to have more fun with patterns and colour. Couches and larger pieces in a room tend to be more neutral so don’t be afraid to put something more colourful under your feet
Q
What is inspiring to you at the moment? I’m really inspired right now by Mediterranean style. I love its use of exotic and vibrant colours, light, natural texture, and of course its European charm.
Q
Where do you see rug design heading in terms of trends next year? For 2014 expect to see a lot of colour, colour, and more colour. The trend is to move away from the beiges and browns, and go for cooler and deeper tones like greys. You are going to find that area rugs are going to be the new art. So, expect to start mixing and matching with bold colours and prints.
Q
If you could describe your home’s style in three words, what would they be? Eclectic, ultra-modern, mixed with antiques.
Q
What does it mean to you to be able to produce affordable rugs? It’s extremely important for us to provide our customers with accessible price points. We strive to give our customers the freedom to be able to update their living space without feeling like they are breaking the bank. We actually just recently expanded into home accessories such as cushions, throw blankets, picture frames, candles and accent pieces. We want to make it possible for you to change out your rugs and home accessories seasonally the same way you would with your wardrobe. The one way to do that is to ensure that our products are affordable, fashionable, and of course, high quality.

SHELL BUSEY: ASK A PRO
Are you ready for Fall and Winter by SHELL BUSEY
SHORTER DAYS, COOLER NIGHTS,
it’s time to do some preventative maintenance in and around your house. It won’t take weeks or months and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune but if you take care of the basics you may well save yourself hundreds of dollars in costly repairs for such things as winter damage and heat loss. Most people can do their own work, and it need not be a back breaking regimen of chores.
Here are some tips and ideas to help you with this process. 1. Check and install new weather-strip as needed. You do not want to “heat the neighborhood” because of poor or insufficient weather stripping. Why waste hundreds of dollars on heating bills when around $50 will cover the cost of weather stripping most homes. 2. Check attic insulation. Many homes have insufficient insulation and draft proofing, both sources of heat loss. An average home should have between R-28 (8 inches) to R-50 (16.75 inches) of insulation in the attic, more in colder climates. New breakthroughs in insulation feature recycled rock as an environmental alternative. 3. Caulk any gaps on the exterior of your home around windows and doors, especially stucco homes with trimless windows. 4. If you have single pane glass windows install storm windows or upgrade to new energy efficient windows. OCT - NOV 2013 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS 59
5. Clean gutters and install gutter guards to protect from heavy rain damage and overflowing gutters due to plugging from falling leaves and needles. 6. You should change your furnace filter at least 4 times each year. I prefer the pleated type furnace filters as opposed to the washable furnace filters. Look for the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating on the filter; the higher the MERV rating, the better the filtration. During the winter, when your furnace is working overtime, a clean filter will help keep your furnace operating as efficiently as possible. Furnace ducts should be cleaned every 3-5 years, every two years if you have any animals in the home. Your furnace should be inspected by a licensed gasfitter once a year. I suggest having this done in the early fall to avoid the rush as soon as the weather turns cold. 7. Shut off outside faucets and drain back water to prevent frozen pipes or install frost free hose bibs. 8. Dolomite lime your lawn and add some fall-winter fertilizer. This will keep it healthy during the winter.
12.Close off foundation vents in crawl spaces to prevent heat loss from your home by plugging the vents with rigid foam insulation. 13. Check your household smoke and carbon monoxide alarms with the test button and change the batteries. Any alarm older than five years should be replaced. 14. Empty gas from lawnmower or put in gas additive for easier start-up in the spring.
9. Drain and store your garden hose. Leaving hoses out all winter will cause freezing and may crack the hose.
15. Depending on where you live stock up on safety salt, snow shovels, windshield washer fluid, ice scrapers and antifreeze. These items are at a premium when the first unexpected snowfall hits.
10. Check roof shingles, flashings and chimney bricks for leaks.
16. Another important note as we get older let the young folks do all the heavy snow shovelling!
11. If you have a wood burning fireplace it is very important to have your chimney cleaned. Last winter’s fires will have left a lot of creosote behind. Be sure to have the cleaning done before you plan to start using the fireplace. If you are not using your fireplace consider installing a Draftstopper. This is an inflatable polyurethane ‘pillow’ that is designed to seal the fireplace when it is not being used reducing heat loss up the chimney.
