WILL 2017 EQUAL THIS YEAR in terms of housing market performance in Edmonton and elsewhere in Alberta? Of course, 2016 year was not the best of years, thanks to the prolonged slump in the oil and gas sector and resulting economic challenges. And judging from a number of forecasts, 2017 might not exactly be the year of the rebound, but we can see it on the horizon. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. says in its 2017 Housing Market Outlook that with slight economic growth in 2017, employment is projected to stabilize and then show modest growth later in the year. However, it won’t likely be until 2018 that employment growth exceeds one per cent. With lower levels of demand, builders scaled back slightly on new home production this year, but housing starts should begin to inch up toward the latter half of 2017, CMHC says. In terms of prices, ReMax Canada’s 2017 Housing Market Outlook is forecasting average prices in Edmonton will be flat next year, at about $364,000. This may not sound like great news, but it follows a two-per-cent decline from 2015 to 2016.

Canadian Home Builders’ Association - Edmonton Region introduces new president THE CANADIAN HOME BUILDERS’

Association Canadian Home Builders’ Association - Edmonton Region (CHBA-ER) has announced Colin Wiebe as its 45th president. Wiebe succeeds Steve Ruggiero, president of Kimberley Homes Group. Wiebe has been an integral member of the CHBA-ER over the past five years. A law school graduate from the University of Kent in Canterbury, he serves on both the Edmonton Region and Alberta CHBA boards, including most recently as the vice-president, Edmonton Region. As a member of the All Weather Windows ownership group, Wiebe has advanced through the company in a variety of operational and leadership positions during his 16 years with the company. Launched in 1978 by a group of Edmonton entrepreneurs, All Weather Windows has nine branches across Canada, is a member of the CHBA on a national level and a member of 18 other local home builder’s associations nationwide. “Our Association is about to face the most stringent year of regulation in modern time, not only in Edmonton, not only in Alberta, but nationally,” says Wiebe. “The question becomes what will we do in 2017 to address this? Advocacy is a key strategic imperative for 2017. This will be one of our major goals to leverage the relationships that we re-built over the past four years to achieve results for our industry, association, and ultimately, our members.

Wiebe was elected president at the Association’s recent annual general meeting. Looking ahead, Wiebe says collaboration will continue to be key within the industry when facing a number of challenges in the coming year. Rohit Group: Baskets of Hope ON MONDAY NOV. 7, Rohit Group of

Companies held the seventh annual Baskets of Hope event in support of WIN House. Offering “winter cheer, sinful goodies and an opportunity to mingle with beautiful like-spirited women,” the event focused on filling empty baskets with special items for women in need. Rohit Group of Companies is a proud supporter of WIN House, a deserving local charity that helps women and children escape abusive situations. Established in 2010 by Dianne Young and Krishna Gupta, vice-president of Rohit Group, Baskets of Hope is meant to provide comforting items such as lotions, cosy socks, scarves and chocolates to help make this time of year a little more special for the women who sacrifice personal indulges for the protection of her family. If you could have it all, what elements would you include in your kitchen? Custom cabinets, waterfall quartz island, multiple islands, schonbek chandelier - these are just a few of many gorgeous designer options. I always set the bar high, especially in interior design: For my clients, I want them to be able to choose what is absolutely essential and what are luxury items, by offering all the options at the start, they choose what best fits their budget and needs. But in your dream kitchen, you can have it all — and more. Here are my top 10 must haves in my dream kitchen 1. CUSTOM CABINETRY Use a cabinetry supplier that can give me a custom look with stock cabinetry. These are suppliers that will custom stain or custom paint, custom fits and they will provide numerous elevations to be absolutely sure of your kitchens design and function. 2. QUARTZ COUNTERTOPS Quartz is my preferred countertop choice for many reasons. It is more durable, more consistent in colour, especially in sample swatches, and it is environmentally friendly. 3. TRUE COUNTER-DEPTH FRIDGE The kitchen is the busiest place in your home, I want clean, simple linear lines to 26 YPNEXTHOME.CA

minimize the clutter. Some suppliers offer a 24” counter depth fridge which offers that clean flush look. Beware, some models sold as “counter depth” still stick out a bit past the typical 24” counter depth, check your dimensions. 4. DRAWER DISHWASHERS Besides looking smart, a drawer dishwasher opens up new intelligent functions. Goodbye to waiting an extra day to wash the dishes in my dream home, one of these are definitely going in my rec room bar area! 5. DEEP SINK Typical sinks are often only 8 inches deep, my must have is 10 inches deep or more, especially with a wide sink, makes for luxurious ease of use. Deeper sinks also apply to your smaller bar or prep sinks – consider this option as well for your dream kitchen. 6. HIDDEN RANGE HOOD Designer choice for hood fans are quietly hidden away to allow for the other features in my dream kitchen to speak uninterrupted.

8. PRO-STYLE GAS RANGE Nothing beats the look and power of chef’skitchen-style burners. Your only decision should be cook top or full oven, 6 burners or 8, and do we want two oven doors or just one – pure luxury I can’t live without. 9. CABINETRY ORGANIZATION No more walk in or walk through pantries for this designer. I’m putting my money on organizational inserts and pantry pull-outs. I’d much rather have a larger mudroom than a walk-in pantry. 10. SLAB BACKSPLASH How do you say luxury? I say, Slab Backsplash! Easy to clean without all the grout lines of custom mosaic tiles, simplifies the lines and makes any space look and feel bigger, brighter and luxurious!
