Please excuse the loose reference to a provincial slogan, but Ontario is not only yours to discover, it’s yours to appreciate. In no context is this modified tagline more true than when it comes to real estate – specifically, home price appreciation. Indeed, homes in the province – and particularly those in the lowrise category – were star performers in Canada in terms of price growth in 2020. We’re only a couple months into 2021, and there’s plenty of evidence to suggest this year will see similar results. Take the latest stats from the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD), released in late January, for example. For December 2020, benchmark pricing for new homes in the GTA reached all-time highs: $1.025 million for new condominium units, up 11.9 per cent over the last 12 months; $1.32 million for new single-family homes, an increase of 21.4 per cent. In the resale market, for which the statistics are usually one month ahead of new homes, the average selling price for January 2021 was up by 15.5 per cent year-over-year to $967,885. In its Market Year in Review and Outlook 2021 Report, released Feb. 8, the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board (TRREB) forecasts strong buying intentions, near-record sales of more than 100,000 units and a record average selling price. In 2021, the overall selling price for all home types and areas combined will eclipse the $1-million mark for the first time, reaching $1.025 million, and representing a year-over-year increase of 10 per cent. All of this, of course, during a pandemic. But wait, you might think... These figures apply to the GTA, whereas many markets that apply to Active Life new home options – Collingwood and Niagara, for example – aren’t captured in these summaries. Would you believe that many of those areas are performing even better? Consider the focus of our Destinations Ontario feature this issue – Niagara. According to the latest Royal LePage House Price Survey, for the fourth quarter of 2020, aggregate median home prices in Niagara-St. Catharines were $538,391. This is up 4.4 per cent from $515,812 in the third quarter of 2020, and 19.4 per cent from $450,898 in the fourth quarter of 2019. This year-over-year price growth is in the top three not just in Ontario, but in all of Canada. And in its 2021 Housing Market Outlook Report, ReMax Canada projects average residential sale prices in Niagara will grow another 12 per cent this year, to $597,181. Residents and homebuyers in Ontario long ago discovered the prosperity and strength of the province. Now they’re appreciating the performance of its real estate markets.

ONTARIO LOWRISE HOMES LEAD NATIONAL PRICE GROWTH Homes in Ontario – and particularly those in the lowrise category – continue to be the star performers in Canada in terms of home price growth. According to the latest Royal LePage House Price Survey, the aggregate price of a home in Canada increased 9.7 per cent year-overyear to $708,842 in the fourth quarter of 2020, as strong sellers’ market conditions continued to shape real estate markets through the end of the year. The significant year-over-year increase in aggregate price was driven by price gains for larger properties. When broken out by housing type, the median price of a standard twostorey home rose 11.2 per cent yearover-year to $840,628, bungalows increased 10 per cent to $592,899. Condominiums, meanwhile, rose 3.9 per cent to $509,239. Price data

includes both resale and new build. “In April 2020, we issued our pandemic period forecast for Canadian real estate, the principal prediction being that unexpectedly soft spring home prices, historically low interest rates, and years of pentup demand would trigger a sharp recovery of sales volumes and rising property prices in the second half of the year,” says Phil Soper, president and CEO of Royal LePage. Ontario posted the highest year-over-year aggregate home price gains in dollar value during the fourth quarter. In Markham, for example, aggregate prices increased $133,932 to $1.1 million, the highest dollar value increase. Markham was followed by Vaughan, which increased by $132,699 to $1.13 million; Burlington increased by $115,475 to $950,796; Pickering by $110,905 to $856,725; and Oakville

prices increased by $109,912 to $1.21 million. The aggregate price of a home in the GTA increased 10.4 per cent year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2020, to $936,510. Standard twostorey home prices rose 11.9 per cent to $1.1 million, bungalows 12.8 per cent to $923,047 and condos 3.6 per cent to $593,811. With the exception of condominiums, similar strong home price gains were seen in Toronto, where the aggregate price of a home rose 7.4 per cent year-overyear to $960,368 in the fourth quarter. Standard two-storey homes increased 10.6 per cent to $1.44 million, bungalows 12.3 per cent to $1 million and condos grew 1.4 per cent to $634,081. Royal LePage projects that the aggregate price of GTA homes will increase 5.75 per cent in 2021.

STRONG DEMAND, RECORD PRICES FORECAST FOR GTA IN 2021: TRREB Continuing on from the strong finish last year, 2021 will be another healthy one for the GTA real estate market, with strong buying intentions, a nearrecord sales forecast of more than 100,000 and a record average selling price more than $1 million. “The pandemic certainly resulted in an unprecedented year for real estate in 2020, but it hasn’t put a damper on the overall demand,” says Jason Mercer, chief market analyst of the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board. “Looking ahead, a strengthening economy and renewed GTA population growth following widespread vaccinations will support the continued demand for both ownership and rental housing. But over the long run, the

14  Active Life  |   Feb. 27–Apr. 24, 2021

supply of listings will remain an issue, particularly in lowrise segments.” Strong sales growth will be supported by continued economic recovery, including jobs and record or near-record lows for borrowing costs. In 2021, the overall average selling price for all home types and areas

combined will eclipse the $1-million mark for the first time, reaching $1.025 million and representing a year-over-year increase of 10 per cent. January home sales were up by more than 50 per cent compared to January 2020, across all major segments and GTA regions.

THINKING OF BUYING A REC PROPERTY? THE MARKET IS IN YOUR FAVOUR If you’re thinking of buying a recreation property in Canada, here’s some good news for you: The market is booming. Yes, even last year, and during the pandemic, with more growth forecast this year. Canada’s recreational property markets soared during the first nine months of 2020, driven by Canadians’ ability to work remotely during COVID-19, according to Royal LePage. The aggregate price of a singlefamily home in Canada’s recreational market rose 11.5 per cent to $453,046, while condominiums increased 9.7 per cent to $280,830 and waterfront properties 13.5 per cent to $498,111. “The pandemic has effected enormous economic and health challenges upon the nation; it has also opened a world of possibility for thousands of Canadians,” says Phil Soper, president and CEO of Royal LePage. “On lake and on sea, upon soaring mountain tops and on expansive farmlands, many Canadians are embracing a bold, new workfrom-home doctrine: ‘I can live anywhere in this huge land.’ “In addition to the new wave of pandemic-era buyers, simple demographics have been buoying the exurban market as more and more of the giant Baby Boom generation retire. Interest in all types of recreational property is soaring, and I have never seen the number of cottages, cabins, chalets and farmhouses for sale at such a low level relative to demand.” Fifty-four per cent of regions Royal LePage surveyed across Canada reported a significant increase in buyers who sought to purchase a primary residence in a recreational market, enabled by their ability to work remotely. As expected, retiree buyers are an active demographic in recreational property markets – more so than usual – as the pandemic has caused many

16  Active Life  |   Feb. 27–Apr. 24, 2021

of them to advance their plans to improve their quality of life by moving to cottage country. Sixty-eight per cent of regions reported an increase in retiree buyers, compared to last year. For 2021, Royal LePage is forecasting national recreational property price growth of eight per cent over last year. ONTARIO RECREATION PROPERTY MARKET

Like in the residential segment, Ontario’s recreation property markets are on fire. During the first nine months of 2020, for example, the aggregate price of a single-family home in Ontario’s recreational property market increased 20 per cent year-over-year to $450,127, while waterfront properties grew 16.7 per cent to $571,266. Condominium prices increased 17.6 per cent to $253,055. One of Ontario’s most soughtafter destinations for recreational properties is Muskoka. Bob Clarke, real estate professional, Royal LePage Lakes of Muskoka, says the region has been booming for several years, and COVID-19 has only amplified the demand. “Retiring Baby Boomers have been putting upward pressure on

prices and reducing inventory for the last few years,” says Clarke. “Retirees are now finding themselves competing against remote workers. Both demographics have seen their savings grow through less travel and entertainment during the pandemic. We are also seeing an increase in current Muskoka owners who are looking to purchase larger properties, as their children have returned after job loss or the ability to work remotely. The most common question used to be, ‘Is the property West-facing?’ Now my clients’ biggest concern is Internet quality.” Most regions surveyed in Ontario reported an increase in buyers seeking a property where they could work remotely. Seventy-three per cent of the surveyed regions saw a significant increase in buyers seeking to purchase a recreational property as a primary residence. While retirees are historically a sizeable demographic of recreational property buyers, 83 per cent of the surveyed regions reported an increase in retirees looking to purchase. Royal LePage is forecasting the average price of a recreational property in Ontario will increase 10 per cent in 2021.

10 CANADIAN ALTERNATIVE LOCATIONS FOR

SNOWBIRDS With non-essential travel outside the country limited due to COVID-19, many of the one million-plus retired and semi-retired Canadians are thinking about homegrown alternatives. Florida’s natural white, sandy beaches… Arizona’s stunning desert scenery and peaceful vistas… California’s ocean fronts, dreamy views and amazing outdoor activities… These are just some of the sunny locations and luxurious conveniences that snowbirds can now only dream of. Google Analytics, for example, shows searches for houses for rent in Florida were down 70 per cent last year compared to 2019, and for apartments for rent in Arizona, off 75 per cent. Many Canadian snowbirds are hoping to make the most of the situation by looking within the 18  Active Life  |   Feb. 27–Apr. 24, 2021

country’s borders, according to point2homes.com. Five cities in Ontario, four in BC and one in Nova Scotia appear to be the favoured destinations for snowbirds. British Columbia is the place to be in Canada during the winter. Whether snowbirds look at minimum and maximum temperatures, number of days with snowfall or the actual quantity of snow in the area, Victoria, Vancouver, Abbotsford and Kelowna are the top options. Near Ontario’s southern border and overlooking Lake Ontario, Toronto, Oshawa, St. Catharines and Hamilton have the temperatures and peaceful, relaxing water views that will help snowbirds get through the winter. Alternatively, for snowbirds who would love to leave everything behind, Halifax offers reasonable temperatures, and plenty of wooded areas, trails and beaches.

EATING FOR ENERGY THREE RULES TO KEEP YOU ON TRACK RULE ONE

AGNES RAMSAY It’s been 11 years since I was fortunate enough to grace the cover of what was then called Active Adult magazine. I was doubly honoured by being asked to write the cover story, a four-page spread on eating for energy. During these challenging times, I reflect on a career that has spanned from being a registered nurse on a busy oncology floor (so grateful to all the health care workers in these difficult times), to working in television, writing, among other shows, a 12part series chronicling a weight loss challenge, to private personal training and wellness coaching, to specializing in whole body electric muscle stimulation training. What has not changed significantly over all this time are my eating habits or advice in this regard; staying true to the three rules I recommended in my article in 2010. Now, more than ever, we must watch what we eat. We live in a land of plenty, and given that many of us are home, we’ve either reawakened our inner chef, or struggle with the temptation of immediate access to our pantry, even when we aren’t actually hungry. The problem with over consumption or consuming the wrong calories is weight gain, lethargy, brain fog, various health problems and possibly depression. Follow my three rules (supporting them with enough sleep, no smoking and limited alcohol intake), and you will have good energy and be more capable of coping with the stresses of these difficult times.

20  Active Life  |   Feb. 27–Apr. 24, 2021

Buy fresh, whole foods. Perhaps not as easy as it was. We now need to limit social interactions, which includes trips to the grocery store. However, it doesn’t mean you need to purchase unhealthy, premade foods full of preservatives and fillers. If you can’t buy fresh, frozen is a great alternative, and sometimes even better, as vegetables, for example, are picked ripe in the field and flash frozen, thereby keeping their nutrients intact. Refined and packaged foods are often full of either sugar or bad fats to give them lots of flavour and to preserve their shelf life. These “foods” are not easily broken down by the body and need to be detoxified instead, taxing our organs in the process. They also don’t provide us with the good nutrients our body requires for optimal health. So, make your challenge in the kitchen all about healthy eating! There are so many great recipes online, as well as wonderful cookbooks if you want to go old school. I love the Looney Spoons series. RULE TWO

Well balanced meals. This one is easy – every meal should have a lean protein, a complex carbohydrate (see sidebar), and vegetables, most often, the green kind. RULE THREE

Exercise portion control. Palmsized portions of both protein and carbohydrates and twice as many vegetables should populate your plate. There are three rules within this rule: One – eat mindfully – eat only when you are hungry; two – enjoy your food, eat slowly, savour every bite. Don’t eat “healthy” food you don’t like since you will end up

Complex carbohydrates: Carbs provide your body with energy. Otherwise, it will break down muscle which will ultimately leave you tired and moody. Simple carbs such as sugar and white breads will not give you sustained energy, and instead convert easily to fat. Instead, choose: • Steel cut cats • Sweet potatoes • Broccoli, asparagus, bell peppers, mushrooms, all leafy greens • Legumes — chickpeas, lentils, black beans (a good source of protein) • Barley, brown rice, quinoa, seeds • Fruits such as all berries, apples, citrus (eat the whole fruit, do not juice them, as you need the fibre to slow down their absorption).

binging later; and three – wait before getting seconds. Let the food get to your stomach, then decide if you are still hungry. As always, I urge you to get outside, walk briskly for at least 30 minutes and when you get home, put on the kettle, make a nice cup of tea and once in a while, enjoy one cookie or one slice of sourdough bread. Then celebrate your success by looking up your next healthy recipe challenge! REAL ESTATE TAXES ON CLOSING… WILL YOU RECEIVE AN ADJUSTMENT?

PATRICK SQUIRE & JAYSON SCHWARZ, LLM

You have moved into your new home, your finances have stabilized… and months later, you get a surprising set of property tax bills. When closing on a new build condominium or freehold property, you should always be aware that at the time of closing, the taxing authority has not yet assessed your property, so there is no tax being billed or collected on your new home. Months will pass before roll numbers are created for each new property. When the roll numbers are issued to the local municipality, a tax bill will be issued. This includes property tax charges back to the creation date of the new property, so you will receive what are called omit or supplementary tax bills. These charges can often include 12 to 18 months worth of tax obligations. You will also receive a tax bill for the current cycle as well. Most lawyers will brace their clients for this day of tax reckoning. If you are aware that this is coming, you will recall having been advised that both yourself and the builder signed an “undertaking to readjust” on closing. This is an agreement to adjust any financial matters set out in the statement of adjustments that require correction or adjustment after closing. It is our experience that the property taxes are ripe for adjustment when the accounts are finally issued. At closing, the builder

will make an educated guess on the current and future tax situation and adjust accordingly. As a buyer, you are responsible for property taxes from the day of closing, and the prior owner (the builder) is responsible for property taxes up to the day before closing. When you receive these bills, you have to check your closing documents to make sure that the builder has paid for their portion of the assessed taxes. In some cases, the builder will have taken a credit for payments it has not made or simply adjusted on land value, with an expectation that an adjustment will be called for. The situation will vary, but the point is that you have to check your closing documents against the tax bills to make sure that the builder has paid their share. For those who do this every day, it is quite simple to determine the correct adjustment once the bills

are issued, so most lawyers will welcome calls from their clients to help navigate the situation. A call to the municipal tax department is often required. If it is determined that an adjustment is necessary, builders tend to deal with it very quickly and efficiently with either a payment direct to the tax authority or reimbursement to you, the owner. It is important to pay attention to tax bills on your new build purchases, and make sure that you are not leaving money on the table. Often, you are entitled to money back. ADVICE | IN THE GARDEN

HOW TO GROW YOUR OWN TIPS FOR STARTING YOUR OWN SEEDS BUY QUALITY

MARK AND BEN CULLEN

As we wade out of the deep freeze of a Canadian winter, we begin to dream about working in the garden. We are reminded that spring is not all that far away when we look at the list of seeds that need starting this time of year. Some of the favourites you might want to consider sowing include pansies, impatiens, geraniums and petunias (not to mention tuberous begonias, but that’s another story). Starting seeds indoors is a lot of fun and a great way to engage kids in the hobby of gardening at virtually any age.

22  Active Life  |   Feb. 27–Apr. 24, 2021

Successful seed starting combines quality materials and good timing. And, of course, seeds! Be sure to sow each variety of plant according to its needs. To do this, it’s important that you check the instructions carefully to ensure you’re not jumping the gun. Most often, there is an indication of recommended sowing times on the packet. Sowing seeds too early will result in “leggy” plants longing for the outdoors. We are reminded that many popular seed varieties sold out early last year, with Canadians sequestered home during the early days of the pandemic. We recommend that you buy your seeds as early as possible this season in case there is a repeat of

this situation. We have every reason to think there will be. Sowing seeds indoors too late can result in small plants that may not reach maturity during your growing season. Sowing too early can result in leggy unproductive plants come spring and summer. For the best success rate in starting seeds, use high quality seeds, clean seeding trays and a seed-start germination mix. Use a lightweight potting mix, such as ProMix Seed Starting Mix, to promote optimum seedling growth. Seed starting mixes are formulated to maximize water retention while they drain well. When growing vegetables and annuals from seed you get a head start on the season, save some money (versus buying them as transplants later in spring) and you have a great opportunity to try new varieties.

this nature. Just give the surface of the soil several squirts every day to keep the seeds moist and water more thoroughly from a watering can when the soil becomes dry. Seed racks in the stores are filled with a great selection this time of year. We recommend that you look them over now and make your selection while the selection of seeds is at its best. A sunny window (south or west facing) can provide sufficient light. Or you may opt for supplemental grow lights, set about 12 cm above the surface of the soil. As the seedlings mature, move the lights up, keeping them about 12 cm from the top most leaves all of the time. If you’re using a florescent light fixture to grow your seeds under, keep in mind that the light is strongest in the middle of the bulb. So, move your trays of seedlings around every few days to share the highest intensity between them.

Plastic-domed mini greenhouses have a humidity dome to help seal in moisture and encourage germination. If you see any of your new seedlings beginning to wilt, it most likely is for one of two reasons – overwatering or damping off. Either way, cut back on the watering, allowing the surface of the soil to dry slightly between watering, and either prop up the greenhouse top or remove it altogether. If young seedlings collapse at the main stem at the surface of the soil, this is caused by a fungus and commonly called damping off. To prevent further damage cut back on watering and spray with a sulphur solution. Improving the air circulation around the plants can help a great deal with mildew problems. A small oscillating fan can work wonders in this regard. Planning your own 100-metre diet or the best flower garden ever begins with some planning and seed sowing this time of year!

SURFACE SOWING OR BENEATH THE SOIL?

Pansies, geraniums and petunias need to be sown on the surface of the soil (not buried) and moistened. Then place a barrier over them, such as a couple of sheets of newspaper, to keep them moist and in the dark until germination. Impatiens require light to germinate and should be sown directly on the surface of the soil. A handheld spray mister of tepid water is very handy for small projects of

COVER STORY

Ed Lucchetta, left, and brother Rob, partners in Lucchetta Homes.

LUCCHETTA HOMES FOCUSED ON TOP QUALITY AND EXCEPTIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE by WAYNE KARL

It’s no secret more and more homebuyers are heading out of the GTA to points west, including the Niagara Region. For Lucchetta Homes in Welland, Ont., the appeal of this area is nothing new. In fact, the homebuilder has focused on delivering top-quality construction, design, value and exceptional customer service for more than 60 years. Second generation principals Rob and Ed Lucchetta discuss proudly carrying on the tradition of their father, Ugo.

into their home, from educating them on the systems and addressing any issues in a timely manner. We focus on excellent customer service as part of our success story, since there’s no better referral than a satisfied customer.

How’s business at Lucchetta Homes these days? How are you building differently now than you were, say, 10 or 20 years ago?

ED LUCCHETTA: Our father, Ugo Lucchetta, was trained by European craftsmen as a furniture maker. In the late 1950s, dad emigrated from northern Italy to the Niagara Region to join in a small homebuilding company of a relative. Over the years, after going on his own, he gained a reputation as a builder of quality homes, building one home at a time. My brother and I joined the firm in the late 1980s following dad’s retirement. We began investing in unique and special enclaves to build our own sites. Working with a great team of consultants and staff, we’ve had some very successful projects. We have also teamed up with reputable developers for larger communities.

ROB LUCCHETTA: As a boutique builder in Niagara, we have always tried to stay true to our roots by giving our customers a white glove experience when putting together the endless combinations available in a home. Building a home can be very stressful, and our team of designers and concierges work hard to make the experience an exceptional one. We have become more environmentally conscious. Leaving a smaller carbon footprint is important. We are doing our part through building science. We have always tried to stay ahead of the building code and home science technology. All our homes are built and certified to Energy Star levels and higher. We offer Net Zero and Net Zero-ready performance for those who want tomorrow’s technology today. Making our customers’ experience exceptional doesn’t end once they purchase. It continues when they move

24  Active Life  |   Feb. 27–Apr. 24, 2021

Lucchetta Homes has been building in the Niagara Region for more than 60 years… an area which is seeing increasing interest, as buyers move westward out of the GTA in search of affordability and value.

And how you do foresee this market performing over the next few years? ED LUCCHETTA: The influx of homebuyers from the GTA has meant a big change to the region. The area has a lot to offer – wineries, casinos, excellent shopping close to the border – it’s all here, minus the traffic and congestion.

PORTFOLIO DAVIS HEIGHTS Fonthill Only a few remain LUSSO URBAN TOWNS St. Catharines Register now RIVERSIDE AT HUNTERS POINTE Niagara Now open

For empty nesters, Niagara offers great value. Our Hunters Pointe site, for example, has 1,400-sq.-ft. townhomes starting in the $500,000s, and singles in the $600,000s. This is excellent value. We see strong sales continuing, as long as the price gap between the GTA and Niagara continues. What about the Niagara Region and Lucchetta Homes would you want prospective new-home buyers to know? ED LUCCHETTA: Niagara is the perfect place to call home. We have easy access to great shopping, fun events, it’s close to Toronto and the GTA. We have more than 130 wineries and more than 30 golf courses in the area. There’s less traffic, so as you come here, you feel the stress just slip away. Lucchetta Homes is the premier award-winning boutique builder of the Niagara Region. We offer a quality and experience like no other. Our team of sales specialists, architectural designers, interior design specialists and purchasers all work together to help buyers customize their home just the way they want it. We offer great locations with different lifestyles. Hunter’s Pointe, our active adult lifestyle community, offers a full community centre complete with an indoor swimming pool and library, banquet facilities and a fitness centre. All this with singles and towns, all bungalow style. It has won a number of provincial and local awards and has been named Canada’s Community of the Year by Canadian Home Builders’ Association. Our flagship site, national and provincial award-winning Davis Heights in Fonthill, features opulent finishes with soaring 10-ft. ceilings, metal and copper roofs and stone stucco fronts, linear fireplaces, engineered hardwood floors and spa-like ensuites with a large tiled shower. The quality and standards are exceptional.

New home supply and affordability, due to land availability and approval processes, have been a hot topic over the last few years in the GTA. How are things on that front in the Niagara Region?

ROB LUCCHETTA: The Niagara region is open for business.

The influx of GTA homebuyers who were driven out of the GTA by rising or unreachable home prices have flocked here and found better value and quality of life. With expanding GO train service and a new hospital planned for southern Niagara Falls, this area will have even more to offer. As a unique and environmentally sensitive area, with large Greenbelt areas and fruit lands, Niagara’s regional government and local municipalities have a lot to contend with. We also have a two-tiered system in Niagara, so developers have to deal with both the regional government and the local municipality. However, there truly is a cultural change occurring here. The region wants to see growth and intensification, and some municipalities have opened their doors to help streamline the process. Land is available, and it’s less expensive than the GTA. You’ve had some success in home science, in terms of building Net Zero homes. How readily available, on a production basis, is such new home technology… without adding too much to the purchase price of these homes? ROB LUCCHETTA: Lucchetta Homes is one of the leaders

of advanced technology for the Canadian homebuilding industry. We are a certified builder of Net Zero, R2000 and Energy Star homes. We built the first Net Zero-ready home for the Canadian Home Builders’ Association pilot program in 2017. To get there, we teamed with Enbridge Utilities and its “savings by design” program to help create and implement a higher standard for all of our homes – while adding only a few thousand dollars to the cost and achieving 20-per-cent increase in energy efficiency. We build Net Zero housing on a made-to-order basis. In many cases, customers will opt out of the full certification but get the better triple-pane windows or air source heat pumps to boost their home’s efficiency. As our energy costs continue to rise and better methods and products come to the market, Net Zero-ready homes will become the norm. lucchettahomes.com nexthome.ca | myhomepage.ca  25

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF TORONTO BIG G PROGRAM Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto (BBBST) is a prevention and intervention agent that works with youth, families and strategic partners to provide support for at-risk youth. The youth (Littles) we work with are aged seven to 16 and are matched with a mentor (a Big) based on mutual experiences and shared interests. Research shows that a quality mentoring relationship has the power to effect positive results on young people in all facets of their lives, ranging from personal, to academic and to professional.

Our work is proven to help break the cycles of violence, drug abuse, poverty and inequality. BBBST recognizes that the intergenerational relationship is a special one. It is a relationship that offers growth, opportunity and wisdom to those who are a part of it. This is why the organization started its Big G (grandparent) program, funded by the Allan Slaight Seniors Fund through the United Way Greater Toronto. The Big G program is geared towards individuals who are 55-plus and are looking for a new way to become engaged in their community. For as little as an hour a week, the programming offers a chance for you to mentor a young person in a variety of settings – either in the community or in the school. You and your match will develop a meaningful relationship that will truly make a difference in both of your lives. Get to know one of the matches in the Big G program: Sheila is a Big G ambassador and has been matched with her Little Layla (not her real name) for two years now. Layla has

a passion for make-up and Sheila happily provides her an opportunity to express her creativity. Sheila says that she loves the variety of activities they’re able to participate in and that the program keeps her feeling young. Over the years Sheila and Layla have developed a wonderful relationship and Layla often says she appreciates how she can always turn to Sheila, no matter what. As a volunteer at BBBST, you will be provided with a match support coordinator. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought on challenges for all. That is why your coordinator is here to assist you wherever they can in providing advice, guidance, and support as you navigate your new match. Again, a blessing of location, Niagara is within 800 km of two provinces, nine states and 130 million people on both sides of the border. This means opportunities for business. The trade that flows across Niagara’s borders totals more than $100 billion annually, and supports hundreds of thousands of jobs across Canada and the U.S. The infrastructure network to support this trade activity comprises five international bridges, multiple railways and the Welland Canal, linking Lake Erie into the St. Lawrence Seaway system. All of this is conducive to growth potential for the region’s manufacturing and transportation and logistics sectors, to complement the historical strength in agriculture and tourism. Niagara’s economy has shown steady growth in a number of areas, particularly in job creation and new investment, but still lags slightly behind Ontario averages. The Niagara economic

development department confirms the area still has challenges in higher unemployment, lower participation rate and lower household income per capita. But that’s changing, as the region continues to draw more investment. In 2018 alone, for example, Niagara had $1.7 billion in construction, and from 2015 to 2018, such investment in the area grew by 56 per cent, compared to 19 per cent for Ontario overall. new HOme develOpmenT

As the economy grows and affords people more opportunity to live and work in Niagara – or close by – newhome development is following. Much of the housing growth is in the lowrise category, as buyers from the GTA find the lot sizes and price points far more appealing and affordable. But that, too, is changing, as some consumers prefer the condo lifestyle, even in a nature-rich area such as Niagara. Developers are responding

in kind, with several new condo projects, many of them midrise or boutique condominiums. Part of the appeal for homebuyers in Niagara, of course, is affordability relative to Toronto and other parts of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. And from the ReMax 2021 Housing Market Outlook Report, the realty firm noted that average residential sale prices in Niagara increased by 19 per cent, from $449,410 in 2019 to $533,198 in 2020. ReMax also projects another 12-per-cent growth in average home prices for 2021, to $597,181.

More and more people have already “cut the cord” when it comes to home entertainment, so why not make life more convenient and easier on your ears with your smartphones and tablets, as well? If you’re the active type and happen to be a modern Android user, then the Pixel Buds 2 by Google might be for you. listening experience, incorporating features, some that Google is known for, that you may expect only to be available for use in your home or office. They feature an aesthetically pleasing button-shaped top with winged rubber tips with stabilizer arcs that gently press up on the inside edge of your ear for a nice, snug fit. They’re also sweat-proof and watersplash resistant, in case you’re caught up in the rain. And, unlike clunky headphones, they’re compact and easy to carry around and store in a charging case that is smaller than the palm of your hand. The case incorporates built-in magnets, which allows you to quickly drop your buds in, and they fall properly into place. All totalled, the package weighs a mere 67grams.

They’re also easy to use. Autoparing allows you to simply open the case, and your phone autodetects your Pixel Buds. They can be controlled a number of ways, including simple taps or swipes on the buds themselves. You can also use Google Assistant, which you can trigger by pressing and holding either earbud, or simply say something like, “Hey Google, what’s the temperature?” The companion Pixel Buds app gives you further functionality, including monitoring the battery level, as well as your case, so you know at a glance how much power you have left, as well as additional controls to configure or toggle on or off. One of these features is “find my buds,” where you can determine

their location or send them a signal that causes them to ring. Another is in-ear detection, which pauses your audio when you remove them from your ear, and resumes when you put them back in. The adaptive sound feature casually and automatically adjusts the volume, depending on your environment. This can be particularly handy when you move from, let’s say, a quiet place to a noisy street. It is important to note that the design of the buds themselves allows for some noise reduction for spatial awareness – such as a car horn – but do not have active noise cancellation like Apple AirPods, which have designed circuits to eliminate outside noise. Beyond listening, Pixel Buds 2 are also optimized for making phone calls. Amazingly, their dual beamforming microphones are able to zero in on your voice. Meanwhile, the voice-detecting accelerometre senses sounds resonating from your jawbone to differentiate them from background noise. Earbud battery life is average – rated at up to five hours of listening time or 2.5 hours of talk time. With a fully charged case, you can get up to 24 hours of listening

time and 12 hours talking without recharging. If you run out of juice at an inconvenient time, a quick 10-minute charge will keep you going for another two hours listening or one hour talking. Google Pixel Buds 2 are designed for use with later model Android devices running 6.0 or later. They work quite well on an iPhone or iPad, but you will not be able to take full advantage of many of the advanced features if you are an iOS user. Retail price in Canada is $239, including the earbuds, ear-tips with three size options for a good fit, a Qi compatible wireless charging case (which can also be used wired) and a USB cable. For more info you can check out the Google Store of wherever Google products are sold. Available in three colours: Clearly White, Almost Black and Quite Mint. REDEFINING DOWNSIZING IMAGINING YOUR LIFESTYLE BY DESIGN

When John Lennon wrote Imagine, he was envisioning a better world and hoping to inspire a different outcome for the people listening to his music. This idea of redefining the future was brought to life by a generation of Baby Boomers that redefined everything from clothes to careers to philanthropy and politics. The Baby Boom generation carved such a creative and dynamic path through the world that they are the healthiest, wealthiest and most educated generation of 55-plus humans the world has ever seen. 36  Active Life  |   Feb. 27–Apr. 24, 2021

That brings us to retirement and downsizing, the next thing that Baby Boomers are redefining, and a big step in that process is imagining a better future. Where previous generations of seniors have notoriously been tied to their easy chairs and inactive habits, Baby Boomers are rejecting that life, choosing to imagine their next chapter and pursue their passions and renewed purpose into a third age. One of the biggest lifestyle trends amongst Boomers is downsizing earlier than the previous generation. Boomers are downsizing with

intention, choosing to leverage the equity in their home to fund their new lifestyle and renewed purpose. While it may start with a splurge on a big purchase or travel adventure, it often shifts into longer term purpose driven activities such as volunteering, mentoring or family. Aligning their real estate choices with their life choices is the core of our process. Whatever they choose, now it’s their time. FinanciaL BeneFitS

“The global pandemic has been devastating for many, however, it has provided a great opportunity

for Baby Boomers,” says Vincent Côté, CEO and broker at Transitions Realty. “As young families seek more space to work from home and accommodate virtual school, there is now a tight seller’s market for larger detached homes. This means that Boomers may have an amazing opportunity to sell at premium prices, which can be an extra bonus to their retirement nest-egg.” The decision to downsize space is not always a financial one, although many Baby Boomers admit it’s the first thing they think about. “The redefinition of downsizing means that people are not just looking at their physical space, but doing more planning around their social life, health and wellness and financial needs,” says Côté.

is so important to ensure that your home addresses both your active lifestyle and your future needs. Joe and Jen purchased a preconstruction townhome from a developer as their downsizing property without thinking about the mobility issues they might have. While the property was being built, they approached us at Transitions. We reassessed their long-term needs, and they realized it was not a suitable age-in-place home. We then worked with them to transition to another home that better suited their long-term goals of community connection, health concerns, and physical independence. “Keisha helped us see that our four-level townhome was not the best house to age in place,” the couple says.

There’s been a lot of news recently about Boomers choosing to age in place. At Transitions, we believe it’s not just about aging in place, but about aging in the right place and, equally important, the right community. It

PreParatiOn and PLanninG are KeY

There are a multitude of downsizing companies that will pack up your house for you, and help you put things into storage or auction off your belongings. What’s

missing from this formulaic approach, however, is the mental, emotional, and intellectual aspects of uprooting your life. What we’ve learned from talking to other Boomers is they aren’t prepared for the transition. Every Baby Boomer we’ve worked with or spoken with in our business has struggled with the process of transitioning. This is mostly due to the transactional nature of the current downsizing approach. We believe it goes deeper than just a transaction. The Transitions model is a fullservice concierge style approach for clients interested in downsizing. While real estate is at the heart of what we do, Transitions believes helping Baby Boomers create a lifestyle by design is the best way to be prepared and fully enjoy the process. As Lennon inspired us to do, it starts with imagining your future. To get started, Transitions has developed a tool for Baby Boomers to start working on what that future looks like. If you are ready to create your Lifestyle by Design, visit downsizingexperts.ca and download the free Rightsizing Workbook.

COURTS OF CANTERBURY PORT PERRY THREE REASONS BUYERS CHOOSE GERANIUM’S PREMIER ADULT-LIFESTYLE COMMUNITY Geranium’s award-winning Courts of Canterbury is a premier adult-lifestyle community nestled in the heart of Port Perry, and has been drawing interest from potential homebuyers across the province. The town of Port Perry itself is among the top three reasons recent homeowners chose Courts of Canterbury for their right-sizing move. The historic Main Street offers boutique shops and convenient services, such as banking, meat shops, bakeries, a cheese shop and a fine array of dining options. Residents of the town also enjoy the beautiful lakefront, offering on-water activities and a central marina. The waterfront 38  Active Life  |   Feb. 27–Apr. 24, 2021

trail is a pleasant 20-minute stroll and brief bicycle ride from Courts of Canterbury to downtown. The town also has a variety of recreation activities, such as fishing, hiking and winter sports at nearby ski hills, as well as a robust arts and theatre community. With a population of slightly more than 9,500, Port Perry is small-town living with the amenities of a much larger town or city, including the local Lakeridge Health hospital, which provides excellent and friendly personal care from a central location. Courts of Canterbury residents Lynette and Dave Scott moved into their new bungalow last October, and

love Port Perry’s convenient location, situated midway between Toronto and cottage country. Dave’s occupation requires him to be on the road. “I’m pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to reach Hwy. 407 using the direct route from home via Hwy. 115,” he says. “I can also quickly connect to Hwy. 400 for travelling to appointments north and south, making location a prime reason to move.” The second reason is Geranium’s imaginative bungalow and bungalowloft designs, providing choices for purchasers to find a home that is perfect for their way of living and has led to a complete sell-out of the first phase.

New residents Kelly Cairns and Jamie Bell describe what sold them on Courts of Canterbury: “The Cavendish design has everything we need. It is bright and full of light, and it’s all on one floor, which is perfect for us.” Now selling, Phase 2 offers even more options for those seeking a freer, easier lifestyle. The selection of homes range in size from 1,423 to 2,587 sq. ft. on 42- and 50-ft. lots, with two-, three- and four-bedroom layouts, modern open-concept living spaces, a main floor master bedroom retreat and deluxe ensuite bathroom, convenient main floor laundry and a double-car garage. The third reason, but certainly not the least, is the luxurious features and finishes. The Cairns & Bell family and the Scotts were extremely impressed with the excellent standard finishes included in their home. Features include nine-ft. ceiling heights and soaring windows on the main floor; kitchens with beautiful cabinetry and elegant granite or quartz stone countertops; contemporary ceramic tile and exceptionally durable prefinished Torlys laminate flooring.

Homeowners also enjoy the longlasting and energy-saving advantages of Geranium’s stringent construction methods and materials that exceed Ontario’s Building Code. All Courts of Canterbury homes are delivered Greywater-ready. Buying a home that is newly constructed provides peace-of-mind, with reduced maintenance requirements and added protection through Tarion Warranty Corp. Cradled in an established, mature setting, Courts of Canterbury includes membership in the residents-only Canterbury Commons’ clubhouse. Here, homeowners can swim laps in the outdoor pool, participate in a multitude of social and fitness activities, and join planned community excursions.

Homebuyers will also have confidence knowing that they are purchasing from a builder that has a well-earned reputation. Since 1977, Geranium has welcomed more than 8,500 families to its new home communities.

NORTH OR SOUTH NIAGARA? BOTH HAVE THEIR CHARMS, AND BLYTHWOOD HOMES COVERS THEM BOTH Whether it’s the abundance of nature trails, sandy beaches, historic architecture, or the wealth of wineries, The Niagara Peninsula offers lifestyle advantages that truly stand out from other Southern Ontario communities. If you are considering the move to Niagara, you’ll have great options for the lifestyle that suits you best and you won’t be alone. Niagara housing is very much in high demand, a strong real estate investment which experts see as part of a long-term trend as the GTA grows and work routines change. Niagara-on-the-Lake (to the north) and Ridgeway (to the south) are two of the most appealing 40  Active Life  |   Feb. 27–Apr. 24, 2021

destinations for home buyers new to Niagara. One award-winning builder, Blythwood Homes, is currently developing neighbourhoods in both these communities, earning a strong reputation along the way. ST. DAVID’S IN NIAGARA-ON-THELAKE – CONVENIENCE WITH CHARM

In this sought-after development, only two bungalows and nine townhomes are still available (at time of publishing). The Vintages at Four Mile Creek, which is located in the village of St. David’s, it’s a fantastic home base to enjoy so many nearby amenities. There’s the world-famous Shaw

Festival, fine dining, award-winning wineries, fresh markets, shopping at the fabulous Outlet mall, golf and a myriad of other amenities. People who call The Vintages home have the best of both worlds: The charm of living in Niagara-on-theLake, the convenient food shopping in Niagara Falls and dining at nearby wineries. It’s only about an hour to Toronto, and the U.S. border is only about 12 minutes away. The Vintages offers townhomes with charming court yards and detached bungalows facing the Five Rows Vineyard. Towns and detached bungalows start at $735,000 and go up to the low millions.

RIDGEWAY – SURROUNDED BY NATURE

The Oaks at Six Mile Creek in Ridgeway, situated beside an expansive 20-acre original forest conservation area, is destined to be one of Niagara’s most sought-after adult oriented communities. The community delivers a fulfilling lifestyle just a short stroll away from Lake Erie. A few kms to the west, you find the sandy shores of Crystal Beach known for beautiful sand and clear waters. It’s also walking distance to one of Niagara’s best kept secrets: Downtown Ridgeway, a charming main street of eclectic boutiques, restaurants, spas, arts and culture. Cyclists will adore the nearby Friendship Trail, a 24km trail from the Welland Canal in Port Colborne to the Niagara Parkway, much of it along a rustic path carved along a decommissioned rail line. Phase 1 of The Oaks at Six Mile Creek is nearly sold out of detached lots, and less than one quarter of the Phase 1 townhomes are still available. Towns start at $659,000 and singles range from $659,000 to $789,500. THE BLYTHWOOD VISION

The Oaks at Six Mile Creek and The Vintages at Four Mile Creek are in different ends of the peninsula, but they share many common bonds thanks to Blythwood’s unifying vision when building communities. With nearly 30 years of experience, Blythwood Homes excels in building neighborhoods that appeal to the 55plus market, with home designs specifically developed for comfort and lifestyle.

QUALITY HOMES THAT EXCEED EXPECTATIONS

Recognizing that its homebuyers are discerning in taste and demanding in quality, Blythwood Homes goes out of its way to exceed all expectations. As an Energy Star builder, its homes are better for the environment, better on utility bills and more comfortable to live in than most other homes. Blythwood’s towns have more space and amenities than many detached homes on the market. The towns include complete lush landscaping with irrigation, paving stone driveways and privacy screens. Garden maintenance and snow removal are handled by the condo corporations. This makes these bungalows ideal for buyers who want to travel or stay down south in the winter. For buyers of detached bungalows, Blythwood offers extensive customizations such as wine cellars, spa-like bathrooms and stone fireplaces. If that special feature has always been on your dream home radar, Blythwood will do its best to accommodate it. For more information visit blythwoodhomes.ca nexthome.ca | myhomepage.ca  41

IN CONVERSATION WITH...

SAMANTHA SANNELLA MANAGING DIRECTOR OF STRATEGIC CONSULTING, CUSHMAN & WAKEFIELD… AND ASPIRING ARTIST by WAYNE KARL

Lockdowns, limited social opportunities, stringent safety protocols… COVID-19 is certainly testing everyone’s strength and resolve these days. But it’s also pushing their limits – in a good way. For those working at home, sometimes a welcome break comes from some of life’s simple pleasures… taking on a new hobby or revisiting an old one. Indeed, be it learning a musical instrument, baking up a storm or hosting an online book club, embracing your creativity can provide all the break you need. For Samantha Sannella, time at home has allowed her to explore two long-time passions – painting and poetry. In addition to her day job, it turns out she’s quite the aspiring artist.

46  Active Life  |   Feb. 27–Apr. 24, 2021

You have quite an expansive resume, with many varied positions and fields. What led you to transition from one to the next? Good question! I am an architect and designer, and I spent many of my younger career days with HOK, the design, architecture and engineering firm, working on many high-profile projects all over the world. After having my first child, who will be 21 this year, I decided a more sane job would be better for my family, so I left HOK to teach interior design at Ryerson. From there I went on to become CEO of the Design Exchange, Canada’s National Design Centre. I truly believe design contributes to our economy, environment and quality of life. It is part of every experience. After leaving, I opened my own company, Urban Retreat Homes. Working on someone’s personal residence combines my love of human behaviour and detailed design aesthetic. However, as any business owner can attest, the stress of owning your own business is significant, so I decided to venture back into the corporate world, and eventually joined Cushman and Wakefield as Managing Director of Strategic Consulting Canada. I love my job, as it combines everything that I value. In your current capacity, it sounds like you focus mostly on commercial real estate, but you have also spent time in the residential category in the past. How do you see the residential market unfolding this year? It will remain strong in Toronto, as it is fuelled by immigrants and high-

tech job growth, which will continue after COVID. However, due to the pandemic, many people have been seeking larger homes, housing with greenspace or they have embraced working from home full time and are looking to move out of the city. This has affected the condo market, and we have seen a slight decrease in pricing. I believe it will bounce back within two years. However, I am certain that design will shift to accommodate new preferences driven by our time in social isolation. For example, condos with no balconies will be less desirable. More outdoor space, whether on green roofs or communal spaces, will see greater demand. The desire to be out of a condo will continue for a portion of the market, and we may see an increase in affordable laneway housing. When it comes to seniors’ housing, this model needs to be rethought, from density of residents to quality of environment. I hope the government will rethink how seniors’ housing is funded and built, to create more innovative solutions. Moreover, due to COVID, we will see innovation in material science – more antimicrobial surfaces and touchless fixtures. The aesthetic may shift to “easy to clean” with more clean modern lines in residential spaces. And for the active adult category? This period of social isolation may drive more innovation in communities – from urban planning to the way in which technology

connects us to our neighbours. For example, I hope we see the scale and form of housing shift to allow more social interaction from the street. Front porches, gathering nodes within neighbourhoods, smaller communities within developments, more unique character within the built form. Typically, when society faces challenges that cause it to retreat psychologically, we see a yearning for nostalgia in design. While I shy away from recommending historic replication, I do believe we should take the best lessons learned from our past and incorporate them into the future. One of the trends experts see unfolding is more working from home, which of course would impact demand for office space. What’s your take on this? We are predicting that as much as 30 per cent of the population will continue to work from home, long-term. Additionally, the majority of the remaining 70 per cent will want flexibility, with one or more days at home during the week. This greatly affects the way we look at commercial real estate. While some companies are using this as a catalyst to shed space, others are looking at how to redeploy space to be more effective. For example, if less “heads down” work is done at the office, the office may become more of a social or collaborative

space. We know that innovation happens when disparate ideas are brought together. The quickest way to do that is to foster serendipitous meetings at work. While Toronto has seen an increase in subleases due to COVID, our overall market before the pandemic was extremely tight. Some of the subleases on the market now will allow emerging companies to relocate downtown. How did you get started in the arts… painting and poetry? Do you have any formal training or background? I have been painting and writing my entire life. My father was an artist and poet, and while he kept that side of him somewhat private, the glimpses I did get intrigued me. I wanted to be an artist when I was a child, but he asked me to get a more practical degree. My undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Fine Arts in interior design. My university combined art and architecture into one school. Therefore, I received a foundation in fine art classes such as painting, drawing and sculpture. My Masters is in architecture, and it was more technical, but the essence of interior design and architecture relies on an arts foundation. What, or who, are your inspirations for your creative works? What an interesting question! It’s simple. I paint what makes me happy.

How have you made your work commercially available… gallery showings, published a book…? The ArtBank Collective in Clarksburg, Ont. carries my framed paintings. People can also purchase them through my website – watercoloursandwords.com. I am currently working on a book. I have enough poems and painting for several volumes, as I typically create one each day. What advice would you have for people looking to branch out into creative hobbies like you have? There is no time like the present! We are not promised tomorrow. How has pursuing your creative side helped you during COVID? Last year was one of my happiest years ever – due directly to painting and writing. It’s therapeutic. I’m a strong believe in art therapy – and painting and writing is self-therapy. What’s next for you – both professionally and personally? I’m hoping to create a place outside Toronto where guests can come to relax, rejuvenate and rejoice. This will be a B&B, but offer cooking classes, traditional southern food (I’m originally from from Arkansas) and workshops in writing and painting. I want to make it a place where someone can find their soul again.

Japandi style

A marriage of simple Japanese aesthetic and modern Scandinavian design, the Japandi style brings together the best of these two design worlds. The look is minimal, functional and inviting. Think neutral colour schemes and non-fussy decor. This style started gaining popularity in 2020, and Pinterest (and its 400 million users) predicts this design trend will be big this year, as well. We couldn’t agree more! Here are some of our favourite items to achieve that Japandi look at home.

Join us in planting 2 million trees near the 401 Highway of Heroes in honour of the Canadian men and women who served during times of war, and the 117,000 who sacrificed their lives.

If you have a hectare or more of land, within 15km of the Highway of Heroes (401 from Trenton to Toronto), you may be eligible to plant trees for as little as 10 cents/tree. Trees add value to your property. They act as natural wind and snow breaks while mitigating the effects of climate change, cleaning and cooling the air, and maintaining water.

CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER CONSUMMATE ACTOR AND CHERISHED FRIEND

BRUCE kIRklAND Christopher Plummer knew this was coming: For most of the 56 years since he starred in one of Hollywood’s most popular musicals, he could predict the headlines that would eventually accompany his obituary: “Actor from The Sound of Music passes away.” That is what happened when the Toronto-born Plummer died Feb. 5, aged 91, in Weston, Conn., where he lived with his third wife, comedy actress Elaine Taylor. The musical was ranked over everything else. That includes Plummer’s legendary stage work and even his Oscar-winning work in a more recent film. I can now conjure a fantasy scene of Plummer, after death, scanning his obits with a rueful smile and a glass of sublime single malt scotch in hand. Then he would snap off a witty aside about the absurdity of life, fame and the sting of being identified for only one thing. Then Elaine, who married Plummer in 1970 in Montreal, would laugh and say: “Yes, dear!” The sting is real. After all, this Canadian acting legend has created a rich tapestry of triumphs in both theatre and film history. Working diligently in Canada, Great Britain, the U.S. and anywhere else in the world a film set might take him, Plummer could lay claim to being one of the most significant actors in the English language (and he was also fluent in French). In 1946, he debuted as Mr. Darcy in a Montreal high school production

of Pride and Prejudice, earning his first rave review. All these decades later, Plummer was still acting. He died before he could again play the lead in King Lear, this time for a film version planned by director Desmond McAnuff. Both men are alumni of Canada’s Stratford Festival, and they worked together there in stage-to-screen productions of Shaw’s Caesar and Cleopatra and Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Plummer’s film credits are also significant, even later in life. He was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor award three times from 2009 to 2019 for The Last Station, Beginners and All the Money in the World. He won his only Oscar for Beginners, going down in Oscar lore as the oldest person (at 82) to win an acting Academy Award. His final nom earned him the nod as the oldest person (at 88) to even be nominated in an acting category.

What that says – loudly – is that Plummer remained on his game, with full faculties, until his dying day. So, it is no wonder he embraced the mythology that he resented his connection to The Sound of Music. Except, as his even more famous co-star in the musical once told me, it was a myth. “I do not think he feels that way now,” Julie Andrews explained when we discussed the 40th anniversary of the film. “I actually believe he has warmed up to the idea that this is a wonderful film – and he is wonderful in it!” Plummer and Andrews remained dear friends throughout, no matter how much the myth persisted. When Plummer died, she issued a heartfelt statement: “The world has lost a consummate actor today and I have lost a cherished friend. I treasure the memories of our work together and all the humour and fun we shared through the years.”

Bruce Kirkland’s career spans more than four decades, working for The Toronto Star, The Ottawa Journal and finally, as the senior film critic, for 36 years at The Toronto Sun. bruce.kirkland@hotmail.com
