It may seem like there’s a lot of uncertainty, with all the economic and market challenges brought on by COVID-19. But there’s also plenty of reasons to be upbeat about housing. Case in point, as our story on page 14 illustrates, home price growth in Ontario continues to surge – even in the face of the pandemic. And it’s not just in Toronto or the GTA. The strong performance is virtually provincewide. Be it in large, traditional markets, or in areas where adult-lifestyle communities are gaining popularity, such as Simcoe County and Grey County, Port Perry, Peterborough, Collingwood or Niagara, real estate in this province is leading the country. Indeed, of the 25 Ontario markets studied in the Royal LePage House Price Survey and Market Survey Forecast, none of them suffered declines in aggregate median home prices in the third quarter of this year. None of them. On either a quarter-to-quarter basis, or year-to-year. During the pandemic. In fact, home price growth in Ontario is among the strongest in all of Canada. Why? In a word desirability – in the fact so many people want to come and live and work in the province. Strong and diverse economies produce employment opportunities, which lead to population growth, which means healthy real estate markets. Those looking for active-adult communities – such as those featured in this issue – whether for a lifestyle change or transition to retirement, need not worry that these developments might be located in smaller, more remote areas. Ontario once again is proving its mettle in real estate.

Changes are coming in the film industry in the new normal
If COVID-19 has done anything, it’s convinced some homebuyers that more is necessary. Bigger homes, larger lots, more privacy and personal space. Or, as Mark Palumbo, sales manager at Democrat Homes’ Forest Heights Estates development, describes it, life without being “squished on top of one another.”
A dramatically altered new normal is coming to the film business – in how and who makes the films and how and why we will watch them. But, as film critic Bruce Kirkland writes, the seeds of change were sown in film before COVID-19 began its deadly spread.

Not even a second wave of the pandemic is enough to put the brakes on price appreciation in Canadian real estate markets, according to the latest Royal LePage House Price Survey and Market Survey Forecast. And Ontario, as has been the case most of the year, continues to be the star performer. Royal LePage expects the housing market hold onto gains achieved this quarter, and that prices will end 2020 seven per cent higher than in 2019 – including an 8.5-per-cent hike in the GTA. The aggregate price of a home in Canada increased 8.6 per cent year-over-year to $692,964 in the third quarter, as high demand and low inventory continued to fuel a seller’s market. When broken out by housing type, the median price of a standard two-storey home rose 10 per cent year-over-year to $819,906, while bungalows increased seven per cent to $570,701, and condominiums 5.3 per cent to $510,365. Price data includes both resale and new build.

EMPLOYEES LESS MOTIVATED AT WORK SINCE PANDEMIC: STUDY monthly podcast series’ – featuring your favourite in-the-know lifestyle experts
NEW CONTESTS CHANGE IN WORKPLACE ROUTINE
Changes in physical workplace and routine are having a significant impact on Canadian employees’ mental health. Individuals who recently returned to the jobsite had a lower mental health score (-11.0), than those who either remained at the worksite (-7.1) or had always been and continued to work from home (-8.6). Those with the lowest scores are employees who are working from home as a result of the pandemic (-11.4) and those who are both working from home and at the jobsite (-12.9). The pandemic is also impacting employee productivity. Almost four in 10 (36 per cent) of employees indicated that they are finding it more difficult to feel motivated to work and 34 per cent of respondents said they
find it more difficult now than before the pandemic to concentrate on work. “Motivation is impacted by ongoing strain,” says Paula Allen, senior vicepresident of research, analytics and innovation. “A decline in motivation suggests emotional exhaustion. Right now, we have two main things driving that exhaustion. We are often not balancing work with fun, social contact and exploration. Rest is also important, but we need more than rest to have balance. Additionally, some are working more, and others are experiencing work as more draining because of concerns about job security or needing to deal with multiple mental and situational distractions, on top of the actual work. Both types of issues can be helped with planning and getting coaching or counselling.”

Video calling apps double in use since last year Many Canadians are responding to the challenges of the pandemic by turning to technology – namely video calling apps. And in no age group is this more true than those 55 years of age and older, says a new study from Angus Reid Institute. Among this demographic, usage of video calling apps has increased from 36 per cent to 55 per cent during the pandemic. Forty-seven per cent of respondents say it makes them feel more connected to friends and family, and 47 per cent also say it’s simply better than nothing.

Strained mental health of Canadians may be here for the long term, driven by concerns about the second wave of the pandemic, lockdown restrictions and continued uncertainties regarding when things may settle, and what life may look like. This, according to the latest Mental Health Index report from Morneau Shepell, a leading provider of total wellbeing, mental health and digital mental health services. “The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic is well underway, with case counts rapidly increasing and many provinces seriously assessing the need to revert back to previous lockdown measures,” says Stephen Liptrap, president and chief executive officer. “As we look to the coming months, it’s critical that governments and organizations recognize the risk that the impending isolation will have on Canadians’ well-being and take proactive action. If Canadians’ mental health and wellbeing needs are not addressed, the resilience of our country will face a significant longterm threat.” The Mental Health Index score is -10, highlighting an uneven pattern since the beginning of the pandemic. The survey reported modest increases from April to July, a decline in August and a return to July’s score (-10) in September. The score measures the improvement or decline in mental health from the pre-2020 benchmark of 75. The Index also tracks sub-scores against the benchmark, measuring financial risk (3.1), psychological health (-1.9), isolation (-9.7), work productivity (-10.8), anxiety (-11.5), depression (-11.8) and optimism (-12.3). Financial risk stands out with a decline after several months of improvement. 16 Active Life | Nov. 7, 2020–Feb. 27, 2021

ENHANCED SAFETY MEASURES A SUCCESS FOR ST. LAWRENCE CRUISE LINES St. Lawrence Cruise Lines has safely completed its 2020 fall cruise schedule, and the future looks bright for fans of small ship river cruising. The cruise line operated a series of four-night, five-day cruises on the St. Lawrence River in September and October. As a result, the line received a positive response from Canadian travellers who were eager to experience the spectacular fall colours of Eastern Ontario and the Thousand Islands region. “During the planning of our fall schedule, the well-being of our passengers and crew was our number one consideration, and we spared no expense in addressing health and safety for everyone on
board,” says Jason Clark, president of St. Lawrence Cruise Lines. “We believe that the success of our fall cruise schedule proves that we can deliver a wonderful vacation on the St. Lawrence River with the highest levels of hospitality, while maintaining equally high standards of COVID-19 safety measures for everyone on board.” The decision to offer the condensed fall schedule was driven by consumer demand and followed months of research and preparation on behalf of the cruise line to meet federal, provincial and municipal pandemic guidelines. COVID-19 safety measures were present in all aspects of the cruising experience,
including guest screening, reduced passenger loads, physical distancing and mask protocols, as well as a hospital-grade electrostatic disinfectant regime. “With 40 years of cruising experience, we have been able to develop strong partnerships that help us ensure that our cruises are safe and healthy for everyone,” says Clark. “Our crew was committed to our safety initiatives, and all of our partners – suppliers, bus companies, performers and attractions – worked with us to go above and beyond in the name of safe and healthy cruising. Ninety-eight per cent of passengers surveyed after the cruise said they would travel with us again.”

With the holiday shopping season approaching, it might be time to upgrade that aging smartphone, but as more features are added and screen sizes seem to get bigger, so often does the bulk and the price. However, Hong Kong-based TCL doesn’t seem to think so. A long-established company yet recent entrant into the Canadian smart TV market, TCL Canada unveiled a pair of premium-featured yet affordable Android-based fivecamera mobile phones, including the entry-level TCL 10L. Entry-level is certainly an understatement.
With virtually no front frame, it packs a tall and narrow full highdefinition 6.53-in. screen (1,080 by 2,340 pixels at 395 pixels per in.) into a sleek, yet stylish 180-gram body, so it’s large enough to watch movies and snap family selfies but compact enough for your pocket or purse. It’s complemented by a glossy, 3D holographic blue back that features four rear cameras and a dual flash so you can leave your “real” camera in the drawer. Just below them is a convenient fingerprint unlock sensor for quick secure access. The beauty of this phone is its ability to enhance your visual experience – something generally reserved for big screen TVs. Through TCL’s NXTVISION technology, you’ll notice sharper colours, brighter highlights, more prominent shadows and better contrast images and video appear as real life as possible. Other notable features include: • A display option for better readability in direct sunlight • A reading mode that converts the screen to monochromatic like a newspaper, making it easier on the eyes, and an • Eye Comfort mode that eliminates two-thirds of the blue light emitted from the screen, which is known to hinder your sleep FIVE CAMERAS ALLOW FOR ALMOST ANY TYPE OF PICTURE TAKING
You can also shoot 4K video at 30 frames per second for playback on a big-screen TV. There are a number of shooting modes and options that you can have fun with and easily get lost in for days. Two notable features are light trace mode, where the camera leaves trails of light for visual effect, and pro mode, where you can adjust settings such as ISO, aperture and shutter speed, giving you the feel of a traditional camera. But if you prefer auto settings, which in most cases will do the trick, the camera’s technology will help you along. BOTTOM LINE: THE TCL 10L EMPHASIZES THE VISUAL EXPERIENCE
Battery life is rated at up to 27 hours talk time on 4G and requires 2.5 hours for a full recharge. With mixed use, it can last all day, significantly better than the iPhone 8. The camera yields more than acceptable results and can capture some pretty amazing images. However, at times I found some photos overly vivid and others weren’t as crisp, especially in low light mode, as higher-priced competitors such as the iPhone 11. Similarly, also missing

ADVICE | FITNESS
STAYING FIT
IN THE SAFETY OF YOUR HOME DEFINE YOUR WORKOUT STYLE:
“These are unprecedented times.” How often have you heard this phrase over the past months? Due to the reality of what it truly means to our physical and mental selves, we must take action. In my article titled “Coping with stress in troubled times” in the Aug. 29–Nov.7, 2020 edition of Active Life, I discussed ways to combat those feelings of stress and anxiety. One suggestion was exercise. Most health care professionals would tell you that exercise is, in fact, the number one action you can take. But how can we accomplish our usual exercise routines given gyms, condo facilities and exercise studios have largely been closed? And when they do reopen, how confident do you feel to go to them? Especially if you are considered in the high-risk category. Clearly, this was the first of many challenges to staying fit in these times. The solution generally evolved into having to become self-directed, and to work out from home. But where to start? 22
Active Life |
First and foremost, there is no point in starting something you don’t enjoy. Set yourself up for success! Choose something you like. Many of us at the start of the pandemic vowed to take the extra time to become super fit; it turns out motivation is a factor. IN ORDER TO STAY MOTIVATED:
• Pick an activity you like, for example, an aerobic workout DVD (see sidebar) • Schedule it into your perhaps, almost empty, calendar • Keep a journal showing your success • Make sure the active portion of the workout is upbeat with either an instructor giving positive messaging, or great music if you are self-directed • Have a family member or someone in your bubble work out with you. It will be more fun and you’ll be far more likely to stick to your schedule.
FITNESS DVDs IF YOU HAVE LIMITATIONS:
• Stronger Seniors (great reviews) • Gentle Yoga or Yoga for Seniors with Jane Adams NO IMPACT, NO EQUIPMENT NECESSARY:
• PiYo Workout DVD Set WANT A CHALLENGE?
• Zumba High Intensity Cardio and Tone (only if you have a DVD player, the code for computers doesn’t work in Canada)
MAKE SURE YOU ARE REALISTIC:
Similarly, if you have never run around the block, don’t be thinking you can train for a marathon. Proper form is also critical, as you don’t want to injure yourself. If you

have never lifted weights, be sure to educate yourself on proper techniques. Additionally, it may be difficult to purchase exercise equipment, as there are shortages. Access the resources that are available. Although the format from Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons has changed from VHS to DVD to online, there are several options available. So, dust off the DVD player, go to your online purchasing app of choice and invest in a couple that pique your interest. You may be thinking it’s all easier said than done, with so many options out there. See the sidebar for various recommendations based on your lifestyle. Remember to check with your family doctor to make sure you’re suited for your activity of choice. And don’t forget to just go outside for walks! I recommend this a lot – because open sky and fresh air are wonderful mood enhancers. However, if you aren’t breaking a sweat during your walk, make sure you get that workout in at least three times a week.

The holiday season is near, and it is highly likely that you are decorating out of doors for the season. If you like the natural look, versus icicle lights or a blow-up Santa and reindeer, we have some advice for you that will look great and save you money. There are many natural items in your garden that lend themselves to a seasonal look that can be extremely attractive. 24

2. EVERGREEN BRANCHES. This is big
business. You can go to your local retailer and buy pine, fir, cedar and spruce branches at considerable expense, or you can cut your own. Again, no harm done to your trees. There is no magic in this, just cut
with a sharp pair of pruners and get creative with the use of the stems inside and out. Pruned branches will produce new growth over the following few years. 3. BERRIES. Many plants produce berries or berry-like fruit in late fall. For the most part, they remain on the plant until late winter when foraging birds clean them off come February and March. Crabapples, mountain ash, bittersweet vine, euonymus and even roses can produce great look ing fruit that is useful outdoors in containers and as decoration on the Christmas table.
4. DOGWOOD. The red twig dogwood
is an invasive plant to many farmers as it grows almost anywhere that you find lingering moisture, especially in low land. When you cut native dogwood down by a metre or so, it grows back up aggressively in a year. The bright red bark of dogwood stands out in an outdoor arrangement, will not wither, and stands up to any amount of frost. It is one versatile decorating accessory. PHOTOS: ISTOCKPHOTO.COM
MARK AND BEN CULLEN
Check this out: 1. HOLLY. Holly and ivy are not figments of some songwriter’s imagination, they actually exist. Winter hardy, blue holly has been around for a generation now and is a staple in many Canadian gardens. Don’t be afraid to cut stems this time of year, as no harm will be done.
Again, there is no magic in the birch branches that you find at retailers this time of year. They are cut from two- to three-year-old trees, and then plants are dug up and replanted. Like a Christmas tree crop, they are sustainable and renewable.
5. BIRCH. This one is a bit tricky, as
we wouldn’t recommend you cutting down your birch tree just to decorate at your front door. Unless, of course, you were cutting it down anyway.
6. WILLOW. Another fast grower. Pussy willow and Arctic willow both provide the raw material of a great display out of doors. They are unique in that they are very flexible. If you are clever, you can twist and weave them into wreaths, baskets or just braid them into a rope that will look great on the fireplace mantle.
Neither of us are proponents of foraging for decorating materials in the wild. Conservation areas and public forests have enough problems with humans taking liberties with their assets. However, a neighbour may have some of these plants on their property who would be pleased if you did some free pruning of their mature landscape. Or you may know a farmer who would welcome your interest in controlling their dogwood problem. Always with permission from the landowner. The holly, ivy and evergreen boughs (not to mention live Christmas trees) are, well, evergreen. The message here? That the message of Christmas does not die. It will not go away. We celebrate the season year after year for personal reasons that come back to one thing. Peace. Peace to you.

Did our homebuyer guides help you find your new home?
HOW TO GET THE RIGHT MORTGAGE WHILE RATES ARE AT ALL-TIME LOWS and mortgages offer them. For example, features to consider include portability, prepayment privileges and prepayment penalties. Each of these factors is helpful when comparing lenders, and offer a host of benefits that could save you more money in the long term. Although low rates can be enticing, having a full featured mortgage will give you better flexibility and offer more ways to utilize your money in the future.
JESSE ABRAMS
WHICH MORTGAGE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
In this type of environment, you’ll often find that lenders promote their competitive rates in order to stand out. However, before you make any decisions, it’s a good idea to speak to

an unbiased mortgage advisor who can explain the difference between rates, educate you on key mortgage features and give you the full picture of various lenders in the marketplace. Having someone to walk you through this process will help you make a well-informed decision and choose a mortgage option that best suits your circumstances and long-term goals.
WHY ARE RATES SO LOW?
The low interest rates are a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the fear of its impact on the Canadian housing market. To protect the economy, the government of Canada stepped in to stimulate homebuying activity, which resulted in this significant drop in rates. With banks and other financial institutions lending at such low rates, this has made homeownership more attainable.
If so, this giveaway is for you!
KEY FEATURES TO LOOK FOR
While searching for a low rate is a common place to start, it’s not the only factor to take into consideration. In some cases, a lender may have a low rate but high penalties for changing or breaking a mortgage early. If refinancing or making a lump sum prepayment is something you intend to do, you could find yourself paying up to $20,000 to $30,000 in penalties. It’s important to note that with certain lenders, penalties can be much smaller. Often more than two to three times lower. To avoid this scenario entirely, it’s critical to understand the different mortgage features and how you can benefit, as well as which lenders
Many people assume that getting a mortgage with the big banks is the best option, but that’s often not the case. No two lenders are ever the same, and by broadening your search, you can increase your chances of finding a mortgage that best suits your unique situation and saves you the most money. Over the last few months, our team at Homewise has been incredibly busy offering unbiased advice and helping homebuyers explore their options and shop different lenders. Working with more than 30 banks and lenders, our advisors walk people through the process of understanding all of the options and features available, so they can find what’s right for them and get the most out of their mortgage.

Mortgage rates have hit an all-time low, with many dropping below two per cent. This has sparked a lot of interest and homebuying activity in Canadian real estate markets. However, it’s important to emphasize that the lowest rate option isn’t always the best mortgage option. If you’re in the market to buy a home right now, look beyond just the rate and understand how to properly navigate this environment. You would be surprised how many lender options and mortgage features are available that can save you thousands of dollars over the long term.

During non-COVID times, of course. But there’s a lot more happening in this part of Simcoe County, situated on the Nottawasaga Bay at the southern Georgian Bay Region. A beautiful natural location will do that. TRANSITIONING FOR THE FUTURE
Economically, it’s fair to say that Collingwood is an area in transition. The town’s traditional industrial base has been in decline for years, though the waterfront Collingwood Terminals grain elevators remain standing as a reminder of this heritage. Some view the massive grey structure, dormant for more than 25 years, as an eyesore for such an area blessed with natural surroundings. The Town is said to be considering selling, preserving or even dismantling the landmark silos. All of this underlines the growing importance of Collingwood to maximize its potential as a four-season recreation destination, blessed with
mountains on one side and Georgian Bay on the other, while developing new economic opportunities. And to do it all at a pace and size that doesn’t result in the loss of greenspace or the “small-town feeling” that residents and visitors alike have come to love. In a July 2020 poll conducted by the Town, the overwhelming majority of respondents (63 per cent) believe the municipality should focus on growing the knowledge-based industry. There is already a strong and growing tech industry in town, including the only deuterium producer in Canada, the largest industrial glass manufacturer in North America, and a maker of advanced underwater communications. The survey also revealed that just 29 per cent of respondents said job growth in Collingwood should focus on tourism, highlighting a local concern that the town relies too heavily on that sector.
PHOTOS: (TOP LEFT) JOANN MCHARDY; (RIGHT) ANDREA HAMLIN
Collingwood has long been a popular vacation destination, chiefly as a weekend winter getaway to tackle some of the best skiing in Ontario at The Blue Mountains. Summertime, too, has seen increasing activity, as residents from the GTA and elsewhere head to “Blue” for cycling, golf and many of the other activities and festivals in the area.
PHOTOS: (TOP) BIGSTOCKPHOTO.COM; (BELOW) BRUCEGREY SIMCOE
by WAYNE KARL
The survey further revealed that residents prefer any new home development focus on the multi-family category, such as condominiums and other mixed-use buildings on smaller lots, as well as Green housing. Given the area’s popularity as a playground destination, real estate in Collingwood sometimes shows the fluctuations that typify the recreational property market. Residential sales for the Southern Georgian Bay region jumped 57.6 per cent to 594 units in July 2020, compared to last year, according to the Southern Georgian Bay Association of Realtors. This was a new sales record not just for the month of July, but for any month in history. Home sales in the Western Region, which includes Collingwood as well as Wasaga Beach, Clearview Township, The Blue Mountains, Meaford and Grey Highlands, jumped 70.8 per cent in July to 369 units from July 2019, again establishing new sales records. Average prices, on the other hand, are showing different results. Detached home prices are up 26 per cent to $857,000 from $680,000 a year ago. Townhome prices are down 22 per cent to $515,000 from $659,000, while condos are off 28 per cent to $391,000 from $545,000. Many recent buyers are residents from the GTA purchasing vacation properties, or cashing out their primary residences in the city and moving north for retirement, reflected in the older demographic in town.
Still, given the prized location and blessed natural abundance in Collingwood, it’s no surprise that new home development is taking place to cater to the growing demand. Streetcar Development Inc. is planning Harbour House, a collection of luxury lowrise condos, while Sherwood Homes has two communities planned: The Masters at Lora Bay, detached homes at The Blue Mountains; and Royal Windsor at Balmoral Village, featuring a pair of five-storey condo buildings. NATURE LOVER’S PARADISE
At any time of year, Collingwood is a nature lover’s paradise. Of course, there’s expert skiing at Blue Mountain in winter, as well as countless snowshoeing, snowmobiling or crosscountry skiing options. In the warmer months, hit the links at any one of the handful of championship courses in the area, from the semi-private Cranberry Golf Resort, to Monterra at Blue Mountain Resort, to the Georgian Bay Club and more. Or book a breathtaking treetop canopy walk, or zipline adventure, or just hit the beach for a swim or canoe or kayak rental. And if you’ve never been, head over to Wasaga Beach, the world’s longest freshwater beach, a short distance away. Festivals? You want festivals? Collingwood’s got lots of them, from Collingwood Whiskylicious, the Peak to Shore Music Festival, Keys to Collingwood Street Piano Festival and the famous annual Elvis Festival. All, of course, COVID permitting.

OPPORTUNITIES ARE WAITING FOR YOU DESIGN YOUR FUTURE LIFESTYLE BY RIGHTSIZING WITH INTENTION Here is a breakdown of three of the main options at your doorstep: MASTER-PLANNED COMMUNITIES
Before March, Edward and Judy couldn’t have imagined that a global pandemic would bring about the lifestyle change that they had been dreaming about. After living in a large family home in Toronto for the past 30 years, the couple knew it was time to move but had been dreading the conversation about downsizing, despite their children’s constant inquiries. When COVID-19 started making major upheavals in everyone’s
32 Active Life | Nov. 7, 2020–Feb. 27, 2021
110720_ActiveLife_Ontario_Edit_45.indd 32-33
lives, the last thing they wanted to do was think about moving when everything felt so out of control. If this is a story that resonates with you, you’re not alone. A lot of adults with empty nests don’t want to think about downsizing even in the best of times. However, when it comes to the transition to a new lifestyle, you have more control than you think, especially now. Transitions Realty was created to guide empty nesters and
retirees through this process, to help build their dream lifestyle and give them confidence and clarity on their future – it’s called Lifestyle by Design. Founder Keisha Telfer says although things around you may be uncertain, this is the best time to start that rightsizing conversation. “The pandemic is fueling demand for detached, single-family homes to accommodate the new normal of working and learning at home for growing families,” she says. “They need more space for home offices, study areas and outdoor recreation. This presents a unique opportunity to unlock the value in your home and design your future.” If you’ve been considering downsizing, you probably know there are lots of options, developments and communities to choose from. But, with so many choices, how do you know which one is right for you? “You have to do your research and really think about what you want in your future,” Telfer says. “Space to entertain for the holidays, or access to outdoor living – it’s all up to you.”
On the surface, these might seem the same as lifestyle or active adult communities – mainly because most lifestyle or active adult communities are planned. However, master-planned communities are not specifically geared toward empty nesters and retirees, but instead appeal to residents of all ages, lifestyles and family composition. Because a portion of the residents are young families and working couples, they tend to offer activities and amenities that appeal to families with children. The familyoriented activities ensure young visitors are easily entertained and will keep them coming back. This makes them good options for empty nesters who still wish to be part of a diverse community, host gatherings and have family visit. Of course, many of the communities typically offer traditional adult activities such as golfing, hiking, biking and skating, as well. Braestone Estates in Oro-Medonte, as featured in the previous issue, is a prime example of a master-planned community that attracts residents of all types from working couples, to families to empty nesters and retirees. The community is nestled among rolling hills with stunning views and the easygoing feel of country living. The houses are newly built with ample square footage and the latest technology.
ACTIVE ADULT LIFESTYLE COMMUNITIES
These modern communities are more in line with what we might traditionally think of as a retirement community. But this is not your grandma’s retirement home – these are built and planned with adults and their active lifestyle in mind. They are geared towards people who want to enjoy a carefree, active life with people of a similar age. As the name suggests, the amenities within the communities are suited for adults and include popular year-round activities such as golf, tennis, skiing, snowshoeing and hiking. Cobble Beach, just outside of Owen Sound, is an active lifestyle community designed to feel like a golf resort and beach club. The focus of the community is the world-class Cobble Beach Golf Links and spa. Residents have full access to the steam room, whirlpool and tennis courts, as well as the fitness centre and outdoor plunge pool. It truly feels like living in a resort.

TRADITIONAL DOWNSIZING
This is the option that most people are familiar with and is exactly as it sounds. It’s the process of moving to another, often smaller home. It’s the option that provides the most freedom in your choices. As you can imagine, the possibilities are endless and you have total control over the type of home you buy – anything from a one-bedroom condo in downtown Toronto to a custom-built dream home in the country. All of these options have pros and cons, and can be found in cities and towns throughout Ontario. With so many choices, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. To help you get started, Transitions has developed a tool to identify opportunities so you can envision your future. If you are ready to create your Lifestyle by Design, visit the website at downsizingexperts.ca and download the free Rightsizing Workbook.

Has the pandemic indefinitely changed the way you live and dress? Casual wear has become de rigueur, with pyjama and sweatpants breaking sales records this year. And, with so many working from home and spending more time inside, many homeowners are rethinking how they can make their spaces more organized, functional and relaxed. We have entered a new age of comfort. When the outside world seems daunting, we want our homes to be a source of solace, our clothes to be unrestrictive and unapologetic. As the winter bears down on us and restrictions change weekly, sheltering in place should be a time to slow down and surround ourselves with life’s little pleasures. It could be mastering the art of sour dough bread, curling up by a fire with family or snuggling in a super soft throw – whatever comfort means to you, embrace it and let it carry you through the pandemic.

Soon, this year will come to an end, and that usually signifies the release of exciting new paint colours and trends for the new year ahead. But before we close off 2020, we should discuss one trend that we have seen for a while now that will continue. In the last few years, we have seen the resurgence of wood in design. Everything from beautifully textured reclaimed wood to light, airy and modern white oak. In cabinetry, accent pieces, countertops and flooring, warm wood has inspired us, and it will continue to do so. However, not everyone warms up to wood equally. Working with our clients, we have experienced everything from minimal touches of wood accents, to having to edit an overload of wood in a space. So, the question remains: How to inject the warmth and cosiness if you’re not a big lover of heavy wood grains, colours or texture. The answer is… there are lots of ways to incorporate this design trend into your home without feeling that you are being dominated by wood. Look at kitchen design, for instance. Kitchen trends for 2021 will see the movement towards warmer colours and wood cabinetry; this might be a
little difficult for those who really do not enjoy the look of wood cabinets. The nice thing is, there are so many other wonderful ways to inject warm wood tones into your kitchen. A beautiful wood countertop would be a lovely addition, or if that is too much for you, a simple wood detail added to your counter might be the way to go. Perhaps a custom wood range hood might be more to your liking, or make your kitchen island the wood feature while the rest of your cabinetry remains a paint finish. Wood cabinetry hardware and lighting fixtures will be huge in the coming year. These would be a great way to stay on trend while remaining modern and minimalist, if that is your more your style. Add character to your traditional or contemporary all-white kitchen
with wooden barstools. For a more minimalistic approach, something as simple as wood accessories such as cutting boards, bowls and storage containers will do the trick. There are fantastic wood-inspired tiles that can create a stunning backsplash, not to mention open shelving done in all wood. These are all great ways to add as much or as little of this organic, natural feel to your space. The inspirations for adding touches of wood to your kitchen are seemingly easy and endless, and it does not need to be as overpowering a feature as you may first think. Whichever way you feel inspired, do not shy away from incorporating this lovely finish in your kitchen design. The warm and inviting vibe that is created by adding the simplest of wood details can be just the touch you need to elevate your space!

INSPIRATION | BIG STYLE, SMALL SPACES
FIND THE RIGHT POSITIONING
If possible, hang mirrors opposite windows to take advantage of gorgeous natural light. But if you don’t have a window in a room, position a mirror near a light fixture, and it will achieve a very similar effect. FRONT FOYER OR A HIGH-TRAFFIC DOOR
BIGGER IS BETTER
How to choose a
MIRROR
for every room
by LISA ROGERS
Mirrors are one of my favourite accessories for the home because they can add the illusion of space and light. A wall mirror can also add a lovely decorative look to your room, and it makes an ideal focal point for your space. The trick to choosing the right mirror for your room really depends on the look you want to create. However, there are always some tried and tested rules that never fail you when you select the right style, size and shape. Here’s how I would choose a mirror for every room in my home: 42 Active Life | Nov. 7, 2020–Feb. 27, 2021
110720_ActiveLife_Ontario_Edit_45.indd 40-41
First, ask yourself how large you want it to be. The size of the mirror should be determined by a couple of factors: The size of the wall you plan to hang it on, plus how impactful you want the mirror to be. I suggest going one size larger than you initially thought. When you go bigger in scale, it makes it look so much more dramatic and works to expand the space.
It’s fairly common for a front entryway to be dark. A large mirror will enhance the light you do have and can make the narrow space feel larger. Place a mirror near the door you use most, and make sure to hang the mirror 60 in. from the floor to the centre of the mirror so people can see themselves. Whether this is your entryway or beside your true front door, a mirror will let you take one last look at yourself before you walk out. DINING ROOM
Adding a mirror to the dining room can help the space appear bigger and reflect beautiful light, but it can also be a little bit awkward. No one wants to sit down to a meal and look at their reflection in a big mirror opposite them. Opt for a mirror with an antiqued or smoky finish, so the reflection is more subdued.
SHAPE MATTERS
There are endless possibilities when it comes to mirror shapes, but they can generally be put into three categories: Square, abstract and round. Square and round mirrors are functional – they look great in hallways, living rooms and bedrooms. Abstract styles – geometric, triangular or teardrop – are decorative and lend themselves to the spaces in your homes, whereby mirrors are more about making a style statement than anything else. For a mirror that can go anywhere, look for one that is bordered by a mirrored frame, but never skip a frame entirely. Frameless mirrors can make a room look unfinished.
LIVING ROOM
There are many options for the living room: • A single small mirror on a large wall will look lost, so choose a size that is appropriate for the wall you have selected. • If you want the mirror to be a focal point in your room, ensure it is large enough to stand out, but also define it by choosing a frame that will make it more noticeable. • If you prefer to have the mirror as part of the background, select one that is extra-large so that its function is solely to make your space appear larger.
“
A leaning mirror is really easy to find, and looks more modern than a flushmounted mirror.
BEDROOM
”
A full-length mirror is a necessity in the bedroom so you’re able to dress and look at yourself properly, and a leaning floor mirror is really easy to find. It looks more modern than a flush-mounted mirror, and you can still secure the top of the mirror with a wall anchor to prevent it from tipping.
BATHROOM
Naturally, a good mirror in this room is essential, so when choosing the right size, consider not just the function but also proportion. You want to remember that balance is key, so think about the size of your mirror in relation to that of your vanity. Traditionally, vanity mirrors are no larger than the vanity itself, and a common approach is to make the mirror the same width, so they line up perfectly together. If you prefer not to go the same width entirely, another approach is to think about the mirror being 80 per cent as wide as the vanity, so it appears proportionally smaller.

BRAESTONE INSPIRED HOMES FROM GEORGIAN COMMUNITIES As one of the most reputable land developers and builders in the Simcoe and Grey County Regions, Georgian Communities deliberately establishes neighbourhoods that are purposeful and meaningful. The company’s awardwinning real estate projects have created quite the buzz – a passion for nature and community have influenced its vision for three, current unique neighbourhoods and expanding to brand new upcoming communities as it continually invests in the future of southern Ontario and its rich culture. The beauty in simplicity is the core of every one of Georgian’s communities. Everything comes back to nature, and the intrinsic value in a more simplistic lifestyle. From planning 48 Active Life | Nov. 7, 2020–Feb. 27, 2021
110720_ActiveLife_Ontario_Edit_45.indd 48-49
and construction to purchasing and decor selections, Georgian works hard to keep things simple, thoughtful and reliable. The company works with local trades to build their communities. Volunteer for community initiatives. Sponsor sports leagues. By deliberately investing in neighbourhoods to foster meaningful life, Georgian invests in the future of the land and the families who will live there. This is what sets Georgian apart, making it one of the most trusted developers in Ontario. From the classic homes of Windfall and chic chalets of Mountain House in Blue Mountain to the charming farmhouse-inspired homes of Braestone, each of Georgian’s communities reflect its surroundings.
Braestone moves away from the mountains and into the classic setting of Oro-Medonte, where rolling fields and gentle woodlands seem painted right out of a storybook. Nestled among this picturesque location is a community of timeless farmhouse estates, with a series of amenities unbelievable in their scope, all focused on wellness, togetherness and nature. Braestone Club is a welcoming 18-hole Golf Club just minutes from Braestone, inspired by the rolling hills and glorious sunsets that grace the region, creating a course so in tune with its surroundings that it becomes a timeless part of the land. With its farmhouse-styled Clubhouse and “The Ktchn” restaurant, Braestone
Club upholds the values of nature, community, and wellness that one expects from the Braestone branding. By cultivating this brand across Oro-Medonte, a clear image has been made of Georgian International, its values and passion. Braestone started with a farm. As the backbones of our country, farms cultivate life. As homes sprouted from the rich earth, homeowners drawn to the idyllic lifestyle that Braestone’s remarkable amenities offer, this community grew into something bigger. Classic farmhouse architecture returning to the roots of the region. A golf club, where sunny mornings on the green are surrounded by the whispers of the wind in the trees as the sun breaks
the horizon. Food comes from the earth straight to your table, the stars shine brightly overhead at night – best viewed from Starfall, the hilltop observatory of Braestone – and every day brings a new adventure in the rolling fields and winding trails. All of this can be followed back to Georgian Communities and its passion for creating meaningful lifestyles across Ontario, growing into something greater than the sum of their parts. The uniquely meaningful communities that Georgian creates are something you’ll never find elsewhere. Nature-inspired amenities such as
an apiary are not likely to be found in a city. Wellness is an afterthought to many developers, and small town Canada seems like a thing of the past to those who don’t dream of shady woodlands and friendly neighbours. Georgian Communities knows that small town Canada holds the secret to life – the way it is meant to be lived. Urban communities have their appeal, but will never have the charm and inspiration that lives up at Blue Mountain, or within Oro-Medonte. These are places where living has new meaning, and it can be found at a fraction of the price of inner-city communities.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS YOU’LL FIND BOTH IN NIAGARA WITH BLYTHWOOD HOMES Niagara has always been a draw to those who hail from big urban centres. The area offers all the amenities and conveniences of big city living, but with so many unique perks exclusive to the Niagara experience: Countless wineries, farms and orchards, greenhouses, parks, open spaces, trails and so much more. With these uncertain times comes
an even greater need to move from clustered and congested communities to those that are close knit, friendly, caring and sustainable. Niagara housing is very much in high demand. It continues to be a strong real estate investment which experts don’t consider in the proverbial bubble territory they warn about in the Toronto market.
THINKING OF MAKING THE MOVE TO NIAGARA?
If you’re looking to downsize, perhaps near retirement, turn your empty nester lifestyle to one of true rest and relaxation. An adult lifestyle community can be the answer for you. THIS IS WHERE BLYTHWOOD HOMES COMES IN.
Choose an award-winning builder with a reputation for excellence. Blythwood Homes is an awardwinning new home builder that has been developing rewarding, adult lifestyle communities for more than 20 years. The company excels in building neighbourhoods appealing to the 55-plus market, with home designs specifically developed for comfort and lifestyle, and located in communities of unique distinction. In Niagara, Blythwood translated its experience and dedication into vibrant adult lifestyle communities inspired by their surroundings in historic communities such as Niagara-onThe-Lake, St. David’s and Ridgeway. 50 Active Life | Nov. 7, 2020–Feb. 27, 2021
110720_ActiveLife_Ontario_Edit_45.indd 50-51
Rob Mills, founder and president of Blythwood Homes, was originally developing new communities in several rapidly growing Ontario towns, but soon decided to focus exclusively on building homes in the Niagara Region because of the natural beauty of the area. Amenities such as wineries, restaurants and an abundance of natural features, including lake views and trails, make Niagara a unique and wonderful destination that homebuyers quickly fall in love with. Blythwood’s first community in Niagara was Butlers Creek in Niagaraon-the-Lake, followed by Ridgeway by the Lake in Ridgeway, and Tanbark Trail in St. David’s. The company now has two communities on offer: The Vintages in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and The Oaks in Ridgeway. THE OAKS AT SIX MILE CREEK
Located at Niagara’s “south coast” and set beside an expansive 20acre original forest and designated permanent conservation area, The Oaks at Six Mile Creek is destined to be one of Niagara’s most soughtafter adult oriented communities. Located in historic Ridgeway and within walking distance of its quaint and thriving downtown, The Oaks
offers exceptional curb appeal and outstanding value. The Oaks at Six Mile Creek presents a rare opportunity to enjoy a robust and fulfilling lifestyle while enjoying architectural excellence and the highest construction standards. The majestic shores of Lake Erie are only a short stroll away, including Crystal Beach and Bay Beach, ever popular for all ages. The Peace Bridge is a mere 10-minute drive, opening up a fabulous world of big city sports and entertainment, shopping and, of course, authentic Buffalo chicken wings. THE VINTAGES AT FOUR MILE CREEK
One of Ontario’s most sought after addresses, Niagara-on-the-Lake offers its residents a gracious, elegant lifestyle. Whether it’s theatre (most notably the world-famous Shaw Festival), fine dining, award-winning wineries, fresh markets, shopping, golf or a myriad of other amenities, all can be found within 15 minutes of The Vintages at Four Mile Creek Community. Proximity to the QEW ensures that you’re only about an hour from the Greater Toronto Area, and the U.S. border is even much closer. The Vintages offers both townhomes and detached bungalow opportunities. The bungalows – on stately 50-ft.
wide lots – back onto Four Mile Creek and a charming vineyard, offering homeowners an intimate connection to Niagara’s rich roots. WHAT MAKES A BLYTHWOOD HOME UNIQUE?
Blythwood townhomes include everything buyers have on their wish list such as: • Energy Star-certified homes • Triple glazed windows • Paving stone driveways • Lavish landscaping and irrigation • High ceilings in Great Room • Luxury bathrooms with tapered glass shower enclosures • Quality counters and hardwood flooring Detached bungalow home features vary considerably, as Blythwood offers extensive customizations in everything from added covered terraces, wine rooms, spa-like ensuite bathrooms, custom floor-to-ceiling cabinets, custom fireplaces and more. If that special feature has always been on your dream home radar, Blythwood will do its best to accommodate it.

As I write this, the U.S. election is days away. When you read this, assuming there is no constitutional crisis heading to the Supreme Court of the United States, we will know who will live in the White House for the next four years. And whether Twitter blasts will shoot out of the president’s bedroom in the witching hours. But the gut-wrenching truth is that, no matter who is president, the result will not fix what is broken about that country: Systemic racism, open violence, no gun control, religious extremism, abject poverty, healthcare problems and the killing fields of the pandemic. Nor will the satirical film I am about to recommend unite a deeply divided and dysfunctional superpower and make it a better neighbour for Canadians. Of course, Joe Biden cannot help but be a better president. No one has ever been worse than Donald Trump. Yet, watching from north of the 49th parallel, I cannot help but remember what famed American filmmaker Ken Burns said to me in 2011 on the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. “It is the Rosetta Stone of American experience,” Burns explained, as he connected it to the re-release of his own masterful 1990 documentary miniseries, The Civil War. “It is always there. Everything before led up to it. Everything since has been a consequence of it. And it is so interesting how aspects of the Civil War are present in our national life – for good and for ill.” 66 Active Life | Nov. 7, 2020–Feb. 27, 2021

A YEAR ROUND WATERFRONT COMMUNITY
Sacha Baron Cohen in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
The demonic “ill” transcends the “good” in today’s America and is easy to find. Sacha Baron Cohen had little trouble uncovering it in his savage new satire, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. Cohen, as producer, cowriter and co-star, resurrected the fictional Kazakh character of journalist Borat Sagdiyev, the geek who so memorably shocked and awed in the original Borat in 2006. This time, facing shame in his native Kazakhstan, and after bloody shenanigans involving Johnny the Monkey (don’t ask) on the way to America, Borat decides to “gift” his 15-year-old daughter Tutar to Mike Spence. English actor Cohen reprises the bombastic Borat character, while the scene-stealing and charismatic Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova turns Tutar into a cult figure. Her entrapment of creepy Trump attorney Rudy Guliani is a thing of cringeworthy fascination. As a mockumentary, the new film has Cohen and Bakalova interacting with real Americans who believe they are involved with an actual foreign
Ken Burns
journalist and his daughter. Quickly, they tap into the psychotic underbelly of the U.S. south, where many people are gun-toting, right-wing bigots who subscribe to outlandish conspiracy theories. Racism, especially anti-Semitism, is so banal that it is an everyday occurrence. Ditto for the staggering level of stupidity unmasked. Among the few good people depicted is babysitter Jeanise Jones, who dispenses sage advice to Tutar (and later admitted she felt “betrayed” by the movie). Another is Holocaust survivor Judith Dim Evans (who died after filming, with her launching an unsuccessful lawsuit). Overall, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is rude and crude. Some audiences might find it distasteful at times. Yet, as a portrait of America in crisis, it is brilliant as campy satire, just as Ken Burns’ The Civil War is brilliant as sombre historical documentation. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
Bruce Kirkland’s career spans more than four decades, working for The Toronto Star, The Ottawa Journal and finally, as the senior film critic, for 36 years at The Toronto Sun. bruce.kirkland@hotmail.com
