Excel Homes is breaking out the champagne in a big way in 2023, as the renowned Alberta homebuilder celebrates its 35th anniversary – and they are inviting everyone to join the party.
For three-and-a-half decades, Excel Homes has been part of the homebuilding fabric of the province, and it plans to be an even bigger part of it in the coming years.
“Since we first began in 1988, we’ve built over 13,000 homes in over 80 communities and we have received over 50 awards for design and industry excellence,” says Excel Homes Marketing Manager, Kristina
Plank. “Excel Homes is proud to not only build new communities in Calgary and surrounding areas, but to be a part of the community. We look forward to sharing many more years together.”
In 2023, Excel Homes has some exciting surprises planned, including new releases such as new anniversary models, new specifications, and more! “We have lots of fun special events planned this coming year, as well as giveaways and more. Stay tuned for all the exciting details!” Plank says.
The past year had seen Excel Homes beef up its presence in
communities throughout the Calgary Metropolitan Area. It opened new showhomes in several new and exciting communities, including in Creekstone by Apex Developments in the southwest, in Rangeview by Genstar in the southeast, and also in Cobblestone Creek by Melcor in Airdrie.
“Despite the challenges facing the home building industry this past year, Excel Homes had a strong year,” Plank says. “Our sales were strong and with the help of our industry and trade partners, we were able to help our customers make their dreams of owning a new home a reality.“
Today, Excel Homes is even better positioned for a massive 2023. Several new models will be introduced this year to commemorate its 35th anniversary, including two front drive homes, one laned and two duplex models.
The first anniversary model released will be The Bennett, a 2,045 square-foot front drive family home, with three bedrooms and two-anda-half baths. This model has just been released and is now available in most of its Calgary and area communities.
“The Bennett will be the new show home opening in Silver Spruce later this year. If you want a home that grows with you, The Bennett model offers the versatility and functionality that you are looking for with a main floor flex room, walk-thru pantry into the kitchen and a large bonus room upstairs. There is room to grow in this home,” Plank says.
That is just the tip of the iceberg as far as Excel’s anniversary celebration models are concerned. “We have more beautiful new models and new selections coming this spring, plus special anniversary pricing and bonuses” she adds.
Excel also plans to make the community at large part of its celebrations, as Plank says this relationship has held the key to the company’s success.
“We plan on celebrating with our customers, industry partners and with everyone in the community, with lots of fun events, giveaways and sponsorships planned throughout the year. We could not have made it to 35 years without them, and we want to give back to express our heartfelt gratitude,” she says.
Excel Homes will be rolling out special offers, bonuses and pricing just for its anniversary.
“Plus, we will be hosting a customer appreciation day this summer to say thank you to our Excel homeowners, who have helped us achieve this milestone.”
Great Room in Newbrook RangeviewCurrent Excel Homes communities include Cobblestone Creek and Chinook Gate in Airdrie; Livingston, and Carrington South in the northwest; Homestead, and Savanna in the northeast; and Mahogany, Rangeview, and Walden in the southeast. Creekstone is the sole southwest community Excel builds in, but it will be joined by Silver Spruce later this year.
Although the challenges of high inflation and elevated interest rates might be seen as headwinds against growth in the coming year, Excel believes that the opportunity remains for significant progress in 2023.
Excel believes that there are plenty of positive indicators that point to a strong 2023, including the low unemployment rate in Alberta and the growing number of people migrating to the province. “Alberta is a very desirable place to live and the demand for new housing continues to grow,” Plank says.
She adds that even with the higher interest rates, it would be better to buy a new home now than to wait later.
“Buying a new home now gives you the ability to lock in your interest rate with a rate hold, which gives you some protection from future rate increases,” she explains. “In addition, the cost of land, labour and supplies is expected to increase in 2023–buying now locks in the best price for you.”
And buyers can significantly get an advantage through Excel’s anniversary promotions. “Excel Homes wants to celebrate its milestone anniversary with you, the buyer! This means that there will be brand new models, new specifications, and special anniversary bonuses and pricing. There’s no better time to buy than in 2023!”

InsideCalgary
by PEPPER RODRIGUEZ CalgaryWHAT’S HAPPENING Homes by Avi celebrated its 25-year partnership with Jack James High School last month by announcing a bursary program that will support its students into their post-secondary education at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT).
Since 1998, Homes by Avi has worked with Jack James High School to support its experiential learning programs where students take a hands-on approach in the homebuilding trade. Over 3,000 students have gone through this program building 25 homes throughout Calgary.
“It is our responsibility to support our industry with future tradespeople, “says Vered Amir, Sponsorship and Community Engagement with Homes by Avi. The multi-awarded homebuilder is announcing a $1 Million contribution to the School of Construction at SAIT and NAIT over the course of five years, which benefits students of Jack James.
Get ready for Silver Spruce
Apex Developments is starting to get the word out for its latest community, Silver Spruce in the southwest.
Located next door to the wellestablished neighbourhood of Silverado, just off Sheriff King St. SW, Silver Spruce will provide a muchneeded opportunity to buy new-build homes in an area that had long been built out.
“We are starting presales in spring 2023,” says Apex Developments Development Coordinator, Michelle Wilken.
Silver Spruce will have approximately 369 homes across 16.8 hectares (41.4 acres). “The vision for Silver Spruce is a residential neighbourhood that reflects the existing character of Silverado by creating an environment where residents can live in their dream homes while being well-connected park spaces within close walking distance,” she says.
The first phase of the development will feature front-drive homes from Brookfield Residential and Excel
Homes. Go to silversprucecalgary.com for more information.

Calgary set a new record for coldest day on December 21, 2022, when temperatures dipped to minus-32 C with windchill feeling like minus-45 C. The previous record was minus-21 C in 2000.
Trico Homes announces new executive leadership
After its successful 30th anniversary celebrations in 2022, Trico Homes is shaking things up again in 2023 as the renowned homebuilder announces changes to its executive leadership.
Trico Homes’ founder and longtime CEO, Wayne Chiu, announced he is stepping down and will be taking on the role of Executive Chairman of the Trico Group of Companies. He also says that current president, Michael Brown, will be taking over as President and CEO. While Patrick Chiu will transition to President of Trico Communities from his current role as General Manager of The Trico Group of Companies and Trico Communities.
“As Executive Chair, I will continue to have a very active role in the company in the areas of investment,
planning, guidance, and the general oversight of future operations,” Chiu says.
Hopewell’s paired homes in Hotchkiss impress
Hopewell Residential Marketing Manager, Marvin Coronia, says their paired showhomes – The Cari and The Rayn - have been getting amazing feedback since they opened.
Hopewell Residential’s line of paired homes have been capturing hearts and minds of homebuyers in the new southeast community of Hotchkiss. With their signature style and affordability, it’s not hard to see why.
The Cari, he says was intentionally designed to provide everything a young family or couple would need at a price that would appeal to both first-time homebuyers and moveup buyers. “We have received many compliments on our redesigned basement suites which were thoughtfully designed to include functional spaces that maximize the square footage while keeping the mechanical room separated from the suite.”
Coronia says The Rayn has been their best-seller because of its versatility. “This home can
accommodate up to five bedrooms (3 upstairs and 2 in the basement), five full bathrooms, an upstairs bonus room, and a main floor flex room. Quite a unique plan for a paired home!”
“Many of our new designs can accommodate the features homeowners have been asking for. This includes a separate entrance to the basement, basement suite options, as well as main floor bedrooms where possible,” he tells Inside Calgary. “Further, we didn’t just retrofit our previous home models to accommodate these features, our team redesigned our floorplans with these features in mind to create a space that flows incredibly well.”

CALGARY HOME DESIGN TRENDS IN 2023
by PEPPER RODRIGUEZLike everything in life, home designs evolve. It changes with the homebuyers needs, market conditions and lifestyle demands. Calgary’s homebuilders have always been agile in developing their different home styles to conform with changing needs, and at the start of 2023, Calgary New Home + Condo Guide takes a look at the new designs for townhomes, duplexes, laned homes and front-drive garage (FDG) homes.
TOWNHOMES
Townhomes are offered in a wide variety of styles that work for different kinds of lifestyles. They may be stacked on top of each other; or sitting side-by-side in a row; they can offer single-level living or a threestorey lifestyle; they can have condo fees and there are those that don’t. StreetSide Developments is one of the most reliable townhome builders in the city offering traditional and no-condo fee models. They are
gearing for 2023 with a slate of new townhome designs.
Kim Orr, senior marketing coordinator, says StreetSide is introducing three new models in their popular Evanston Park townhomes in the northwest. It’s the final phase of this popular development and the final opportunity to get into a newbuild home in Evanston.
“These models appeal to a wide target with three- to four-bedrooms, single and double car garage models
and come with our most popular upgrades made standard,” she adds. New showhomes will be introduced here in the summer.
As for new design, Orr says StreetSide has been focusing on creating kitchens that offer more flexibility. “We’ve been focusing on our kitchens as the focal point of the home by creating workable spaces for families to gather with an abundance of counterspace, storage, and large breakfast bars.”
StreetSide is also launching in February its newest model in Red Embers Point in Redstone – which is also similarly the final opportunity to buy a new home in this northeast community.
“Our Executive No condo fee townhomes are proving to continue to be very popular in Hudson in Pine Creek and Harmony which offer large square footages and detached 2 & 3 car garages.”
Find out more of what they offer at streetsidecalgary.com.
DUPLEX HOMES
A duplex (also called semi-attached, or paired home) is a single structure featuring two residences, each with its own private entrance and one shared wall (there is a gap between homes to lessen sound transfer). Each home is individually owned, and unlike townhomes, have no condo fees. It’s twice the nice at half the price.
Cedarglen Homes has always distinguished itself in its innovative processes and their new line of paired homes in the northwest community of Glacier Ridge sets the bar even higher.
“Our paired homes are perfect for growing families as all of our models feature three bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms and plenty of functional entertaining space on the main floor,” says Glacier Ridge area manager, Crystal Chu. “With the opportunity choose a walk-out basement lot and add a detached garage, these homes are able to check off every box on a new homebuyers’ checklist while still staying priced starting around the $500,000 mark.”
Cedarglen Homes’ paired homes here range from 1,321 to 1,816 square-feet, a very good size for what many choose as their first home.
The Clyde 17 showhome’s kitchen just sparkles with ingenuity, as the galley layout with lots of storage options leaves plenty of functional space to work in. The larger Columbia 17 brings an added lifestyle component to the layout.
Find out more from Cedarglen Homes at cedarglenhomes.com.
LANED HOMES
Laned homes have often been referred to as the Goldilocks of homes. They’re not too small, they’re not too big – they are just right. No wonder it’s the home type that many first-time homebuyers, young families, and even those with changing lifestyles choose.
Laned homes are detached singlefamily homes with rear detached parking backing onto a laneway, and they are red hot in Calgary’s surging new home market.
Trico Homes has provided some of the most exciting laned home designs in the city with versatile and flexible plans that accommodate different needs.
Their new laned homes can come with flex rooms that can be used as a home office or even as a fourth bedroom with full bathroom suite. Spice kitchens are available, as are extra loft space.
StreetSide – Creekstone Cedarglen HomesSpice kitchens are available, as are extra loft space. Side or rear entrance to give developed basement suites extra privacy, and functional floorplans that come standard with large windows, wide hallways and large bedrooms.
THE BRAVO, TRICO’S 30TH ANNIVERSARY MODEL RELEASED LAST YEAR, IS MAKING WAVES.
“We have created this model with multiple options to accommodate different demographic needs,” says Trico Homes director of Marketing, glenda Schwartz. “The base plan started off at 1,600 square-feet and have options that could expand the living space. Base plan featured a long 10-foot island and a pantry room and large window at the stairwell, upper floor with large walkin closet to master bedroom with dual vanity ensuite.”
The Bravo can come with a spice kitchen. “This enclosed second kitchen accommodates cultural cooking to contain all fragrance and
oil from the rest of the living space,” she says.
The Bravo can also come with main floor bedroom & full bath option. “This is designed for multi generation living and big family or simply a guest bedroom. A third option is to give additional space for family gathering. Having the stairwell located at rear allows for easy access to the basement for the Secondary suite – Secondary suite features 2 bedrooms, kitchen with living area and in-suite laundry area.”
Trico’s laned homes are found in Seton, and Wolf Willow in the southeast; Glacier Ridge in the northwest; Cornerbrook and Homestead in the northeast; Midtown in Airdrie; and in Dawson Landing’s and Chelsea in Chestermere. “We are building new laned homes in Seton – the Bravo and our current best-seller, the Raeya,” Schwartz says.

FRONT-DRIVE GARAGE HOMES
The front-drive garage (FDG) home is as ubiquitous as the suburbs they are generally found in. They are at the apex of the home-buying cycle. It is the home most everyone who has lived in an apartment suite, a duplex, or a townhome, aspire to live in eventually. Especially when they have children, and they see their families grow.
FDG homes come in many forms. In Calgary, they are usually two storey homes with three-bedrooms, twoand-a-half baths, and a basement development options, and of course, a garage to fit two cars – or more.
For more than four decades, Shane Homes has been building some of Calgary’s most distinguished homes and their line of FDG homes are designed to answer the family’s wants and needs.
Duc Le, Senior Architectural Technologist/Designer at Shane Homes says flexibility is key in the design of their FDG homes.
“There is always plenty of rooms for growing families, main floor
lifestyle room and powder room can be customized to grandparents bedroom with full bath. Walk through pantry with spice kitchen options are available. All our new models designed with side entrance in mind for future legal basement suite. There are many options to ‘Love it or Customize it’ to your needs.”
For 2023, Shane Homes is introducing the Saffron II. “This has been created with customers desires in mind – large sitting room by the foyer for a family gathering, builtin full bath suite on main which is connected the Lifestyle/Bedroom. Four- to five-bedrooms home with four full bathrooms is standard for this model,” Le says.
Also popular at The Emerald and The Moraine. “The Emerald has four- to five bedrooms with a family room between the owners’ suite and the children’s bedrooms. “It has a spacious kitchen with island overlooking the dining nook area, and
brings the architectural feature of the stair in place.”
While The Moraine is a traditional three-bedroom home but each one has its own walk-in closet. “The family room is symmetrical with the U-shape stair which creates a larger space with a vaulted ceiling that can be added. Dining nook and living room side-byside are perfect for a family gathering.”
Shane Homes’ FDG homes can be found in Belmont, and Aspen Spring Estates in the southwest; Cornerstone in the northeast; Glacier Ridge, and
Ambleton in the northwest; and Cobblestone Creek, and Midtown in Airdrie. Go to shanehomes.com for more. Shane Homes Trico Homes – Bravo Trico Homes – Cornerbrook1. SADDLESTONE

TRAVELLING THIS WINTER? FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO
PROTECT YOUR HOME!
cameras which you can monitor from your smartphone
CODY BATTERSHILLThe last few years have been anything but easy, especially for snowbirds who love escaping the cold winters we’re used to here in Alberta. But now, thankfully, we can hop on a plane to almost anywhere we would have prior to 2020.
Many of us have spent much time making our homes as comfortable as possible over the past few years. So then, what are some of the best actions to take to protect your home while on your next lengthy snowbird trip?
Here are several ways to protect your home for the cold winter ahead and not fret about your property while away on vacation.
1 – MAKE IT LOOK LIKE SOMEONE IS HOME
Calgary is a relatively safe city, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make it look like someone is home to prevent others from getting any ideas:
know well, and ask if they can pick up packages and mail that may be left at your front door
your sidewalk and front steps after snowfall
along walkways and doors and set up interior light timers to go on when the sun isn’t shining
deadbolts and security-type hinges. Consider using the equivalent mechanisms for windows, such as slide locks.
media channels for the time being –waiting until you’re home is best
and exciting experiences with the world, at least make sure your privacy settings are up to par to only allow close friends and family members see your content
insurance provider for any rules about leaving your home vacant while on a longer holiday
3 – KEEP YOUR HOME WARMER THAN YOU THINK IS NEEDED
Many snowbirds think it’s a good idea to reduce the thermostat’s temperature to save on energy costs. However, they should exercise caution:
2
– AVOID WATER DAMAGE TO YOUR HOME
number one threat to your home when on an extended vacation. Do yourself a favour, and do your due diligence long before travel day arrives:
significant damage to your home. off your water supply and draining the pipes.
older-style system, consult a local heating professional to determine if it is safe to turn off the water supply and ask how to properly drain the system to prevent ice build-up or other types of damage
appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers, to avoid leaks and broken hoses while you’re away
are sealed properly, as leaks can significantly affect the efficiency of your home heating system
maintenance on all systems before you go, essentially giving your property an “oil change” before an extended leave of absence
have a smart thermometer to help assist in regulating your home’s temperature either through unique settings or a smartphone app –which makes snowbird life easy.
piping in unheated areas such as crawl spaces, garages and attics with the appropriate insulation
department store specialist for more information and how to go about that appropriately.
an exhaustive list-- you can do more to protect your home while on an extended vacation over winter.
Wishing you all the best with your travels this winter and an excellent 2023!

REMAINS A FAVOURITE FOR NEW CALGARIANS
by PEPPER RODRIGUEZCalgary’s population is growing fast, increasing by 22,200 people from April 2021 to April 2022, according to the City of Calgary. And it is expected to grow even more in the next four years. And one of the best places for these newcomers to the city to find a home is in the northeast.
The signs of growth are everywhere in northeast Calgary. Someone who hasn’t been in the area over the last 10 years might even find it unrecognizable with all the new commercial and residential developments. And more are underway.
What was once a lonely stretch of prairie country road, Country Hills Boulevard – one of the main thoroughfares in the area – has become emblematic of the explosive growth of what has been termed Calgary’s “New North.”
Indeed, the appellation works. The northeast has ever been the area for new beginnings, as it has been favoured by new immigrants to the city for its affordable housing options. And it’s not just immigrants, but anyone who wants to become a homeowner – especially first-time-
buyers - will find something within their budget in the myriad of new communities that have fuelled the sector’s growth.
RAPID GROWTH
The northeast has been so popular that Skyview Ranch and Redstone are all but built out – the latter only has townhomes from StreetSide Development left, as far as new build homes are concerned. The hottest communities for new homes in the northeast currently are Homestead by Partners Development Group, Cornerbrook by WestCreek Developments and Savanna by Genstar.
“There’s definitely some exciting stuff going on in Homestead as we head into the new year,” says Partners Marketing Manager, Cale Marklund.
“We’re excited to now be offering paired homes in Homestead, further broadening our product offering. These homes will be built by Partners and will feature a gorgeous streetscape that is unique to the community. The paired homes are offered in Phases 3, 4 and 5 of the community, and allow us to now
offer four different home styles (front garage, laned, street towns, paired) as we try to accommodate multiple lifestyles and stages.”
The Phase 3 paired homes have the idyllic location, directly across the street from the first community playground – perfect for young families. Two showhomes will be opening around spring 2023 for the paired homes. “We are mostly sold through Phases 1-3, Phase 5 will begin sales early in the new year with laned, front garage and paired homes.”
Homestead will also soon have its own commercial development – Homestead Landing. “This commercial area will feature a gas bar/convenience store, grocery store, food and drink options, childcare, and so much more,” Marklund says. Construction on the first phase of the commercial section will commence in April 2023.
Homestead will also have a further connection to the rest of the northeast with the construction of the 80th Avenue overpass. “Construction is underway, and will be complete October 2023 allowing for city
transit, emergency services and bike/ pedestrian traffic only,” he adds.
A MECCA FOR NEW HOMEOWNERS
Newcomers to the city have indeed found a home here. Recent census data reveal that Wards 5 and 10, both in the northeast, had the highest proportion of people who identify as visible minorities compared to the overall population of each region. More than 80 per cent of those in Ward 5, encompassing areas such as Falconridge, Martindale and SaddleRidge, identify as a visible minority. In Ward 10, which includes Abbeydale, Marlborough, Mayland Heights and Rundle, it is at 58 per cent of the population.
The most common ethnicities are South Asian, Chinese and Filipino. One doesn’t even need those stats to know this truth. One can tell simply by noticing all the supermarkets and restaurants that serve those particular segments of the demographic doing brisk business in the area.
AMENITY-RICH AREA
The venerable T&T supermarket on 36 St. NE gets crowded every Chinese New Year; Basha International Foods along Barlow Tr. is the go-to spot for fresh ingredients for South Asian dishes; and, the most recent addition, Seafood City just off Sunridge Blvd. draws Filipino shoppers from as far away as Saskatchewan.
The newly renovated Sunridge Mall continues to be the commercial mecca of the northeast and the new Daily Fresh Produce area combines the traditional shopping mall with a farmer’s market offering local produce.
Families love the northeast as it offers several inexpensive ways to engage young children. The Prairie Winds Park along Castleridge Drive, just east of 52nd Street NE, has become a lovely four-season outdoor playground for residents living in the surrounding communities. The cityrun Village Square recreation centre is a great option, as well.
Then there is the magical Genesis Centre, a 225,000 square foot
multi-purpose complex dedicated to enriching the health, wellness, and unity of northeast Calgary. It has two indoor filed houses, a community gymnasium. The Saddletowne YMCA and the Calgary Public Library are at its wings.
With all those amenities – not to mention the plentiful schools and places of worship– it is no wonder that the northeast is known as a very welcoming place. Then there are the family-friendly new communities that abound.

SMART
IS THE NEW SEXY IN NEW HOMES
by PEPPER RODRIGUEZIt used to be that the handclapactivated light fixture was the extent of home automation, but now everything can be controlled from your smart phone, as Siri and Alexa increasingly form the matrix of home life.
Thermostats, door locks, security cameras, even the window blinds can all be controlled by a simple voice command, as the power to control every facet of home life is at your fingertips. Today more homebuyers are opting for smart home installations as technology becomes more powerful, plentiful, advanced and affordable.
Homebuyers now can get all the bells and whistles of a smart home
when they move into their new home, or they can choose to make it a DIY project with the easy availability of smart home technology.
Blair Deault, Smart Home Technology Consultant at Jayman BUILT says it makes perfect sense to incorporate smart technology in home life for increased safety and comfort.
Having smart home technology gives homeowners the power to know what is happening in the home when they are away, he tells Calgary New Home + Condo Guide. “Is my door open? Is my garage door open? Is someone inside the home? Is there a water leak? Did I leave lights on? Is my door locked? Now, you can find
out and set your mind at ease while you’re away on vacation.”
He adds that smart home technology also has the ability to increase energy savings by shutting off lights that are not in use, schedule thermostat to low when no one’s at home. “You get the added comfort of always having the right temperature when you’re at home, lighting levels, and even natural light by controlling the blinds. You also get the added security of knowing when packages arrive at your front door or who is at your home.”
Jayman BUILT has included smart home technology as part of their standard package since 2020, and homebuyers are responding very
favourably. And why not when a simple press of a button or voice command can get your home functioning the way you want it to.
Deault says having home automation a standard was important to them, and that buyers have responded well to the initiative.
“Home automation makes our homes safer, healthier, and we are able to leverage home technology for greater energy efficiency,” he says.
“Making smart home technology benefits available to everyone - from starter homes to our luxury homes... taking something that was once only affordable by a few and making it available to all. Every homeowner should be able to leverage this technology to live safer, healthier, smarter and more energy efficient using this technology,” he adds.
Jayman BUILT includes the following as standards now with every home purchase:
• Smart Door Lock –Schlage Encode
• Smart Thermostat – Ecobee Smart Thermostat
• Smart Lighting – Kasa Smart Switches & Dimmers
• Smart Security – Ring Video Doorbell & Floodlight Camera
• Smart Display – Amazon Echo Show 5, which is the hub or integrator that connects all the devices listed.
• Smart Garage Door Opener –Linear Smart Garage Door Opener (when applicable)
“Our standard smart home technology package is included in our spec homes, showhomes and pre-sale homes. Every Jayman BUILT home includes this!” Deault says. He adds that it’s easy enough to add to this package to suit each lifestyle, like putting in additional smart light switches, light fixtures, and more smart speakers or security cameras.
“Jayman tested, negotiated direct with manufacturers to select best in class equipment and manufacturers, complete compatibility and
integration with no monthly monitoring costs. The system can easily be upgraded, enhanced for decades to come,” he adds.
Deault says Jayman BUILT has been able to keep costs low with their massive purchasing power and that there isn’t a lot of difference between the price of a Jayman BUILT home with all these standard home automation features, and a home that doesn’t.

CALGARY WELCOMES SEBASTIAN CLOVIS AT THE 2023
RENOVATION SHOW
by PEPPER RODRIGUEZIt has been a long, strange, and wonderful journey for Sebastian Clovis – from being a Grey Cup champ to one of today’s hottest HGTV Canada stars. That journey continues as he makes his first home show appearance in Calgary at the Calgary Renovation Show this January.
Clovis tells Calgary New Home + Condo Guide that he is excited for the opportunity. “This will be my first time presenting in Calgary, so I’m pretty excited. I haven’t been to Calgary since I played against the (Calgary) Stampeders many moons ago.”
He says he will be sharing some tips he learned during his journey on the Main Stage of the show. “I’ll be speaking about my journey into building, how I got into renovation TV,
and some things homeowners should consider before starting a renovation.”
Clovis, 43, is a former Canadian Football League player who played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and also as free safety for the BC Lions in their Grey Cup championship run in 2006. But he always had a passion for building and creating.
“The saying ‘necessity is the mother of invention’ was used often in my childhood home. Although my mother was a nurse, she sewed many of our clothes and blankets, and my father, a teacher, built a lot of the furniture around our house. As a result, I was exposed to different types of tools early in life and developed an affinity for building and creating things,” he says.
“I remember walking home from school and sitting outside renovation sites to watch the builders work. My parents recognized my interest in
building, and when they hired a builder to come and renovate our kitchen, they convinced him to take me on as a helper. I worked with that builder every summer from the age of 14 until I left home on my football scholarship. I learned much of the fundamentals of home renovation before graduating high school, so when my football career ended, it was a natural transition back to the tool belt.”
Today, Clovis is one of HGTV Canada’s most beloved personalities,
and has enjoyed nearly a decade on the air waves as host of Save My Reno and Tackle My Reno on top of being an indelible part of hit ensemble series’ Home To Win and Family Home Overhaul. Sebastian is also the proud creator and executive producer of the new series, Gut Job.
But presenting live on stage is something new for him. “I’m a relative baby on the home show circuit, so I’m excited to tell an intriguing story to a fun audience and meet some HGTV
and CFL fans from another part of the country,” he says.
The Calgary Renovation Show runs from January 13-15 at the BMO Centre on the Stampede grounds. The show attracts about 19,000 visitors in its annual weekend run. Clovis is just one of a bevy of experts who are speaking at the Sleep Country Main Stage, including DIYer, Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault, and Neil Harding from Sleep Country.
The Calgary Renovation Show is perfectly timed to kick off the year right for home improvement, says Casey Matulic, Show Manager, Calgary Home Shows for MarketPlace Events.
“It really comes at such a perfect time for homeowners and we’re always proud to bring them the best inspiration and advice to help them kick-start their New Year’s home improvement projects off of the right foot.”
Visitors can expect over 200 exhibitors along with a slew of great new features and a few really great industry professionals speaking on the Sleep Country Main Stage. Whether you’re a DIYer looking for tips to take a project from amateur to pro or are searching for the best local talent to start a home improvement project –the show has it all.
“We take a lot of pride in producing a really dynamic marketplace for attendees, including bringing popular speakers and unique features. The curated group of exhibitors is also really beneficial for attendees and we’re proud to truly be a one-stop shop for all types of homeowners,” Matulic adds.

Winter cheer for your houseplants
by MARK & BEN CULLENWith the days now noticeably shorter, we turn to our interior greenscapes to lift our spirits through the dark days of winter.
While houseplant companions cheer up our homes, they too are feeling the effects of shorter days. Nobody understands this better than Darryl Cheng, author of The New Plant Parent. An engineer who has studied the relationship between houseplants and light, Cheng writes: “The impact of light cannot be overstated: No special fertilizer, distilled water or humidifiers will improve a houseplant in a poorly lit environment.”
Here are our top tips for ensuring the well-being of your cherished plants through the winter:
Light
Light is the big one during this limited-daylight time of year. Placing your tropical plants in south-facing, unobstructed windows is ideal, but there is also nothing wrong with adding artificial light. However, take note: Cheng advises that many agricultural-grade grow lights are likely overkill. “Most of the tropicals people are growing as houseplants have a lower light demand than the high-yielding vegetable crops those
lights are built for,” he writes. “If you have a regular white LED bulb, your plants will get enough spectrum at enough intensity to survive.” Bear in mind this supplemental LED lighting is lower intensity than the sun, which can be compensated for with longer exposure — up to 12 hours a day won’t hurt — and with the efficiency of LED lights, there shouldn’t be too much cause for concern on your hydro bill.
Less moisture
The biggest cause for houseplant failure is too much love in the form of watering. Waterlogged potting soil will lead to root rot. If your plants are looking yellow or black and wilted, check to see if the soil is too wet by pushing your finger into the soil about three centimetres deep. Remove the dead foliage and repot into fresh, dry soil if necessary.
More moisture
Many of the tropical plants we enjoy in our home are native to humid, rainforest-like environments – basically the opposite of our dry Canadian homes during the winter. Orchids, majesty palm, begonias, and Boston fern are some that will benefit from a daily misting with room temperature water in a fine spray bottle, generally when the soil starts to appear dry. Keep an eye out for brown or dry leaf
tips. Important note: Succulents, fiddle leaf fig, and spider plants are among those that do not benefit from misting and can end up with the symptoms of overwatering when misted. The easiest way to decide whether to mist your houseplants or not is to consider where they came from. Those native to the Mediterranean and Africa typically enjoy drier conditions than the lush tropical plants hailing from the rainforests of Southeast Asia and South America.
New Year diet program
Like many of us, the new year is a good time for indoor plants to cut back their food intake. Pay close attention — if there is new growth, continue fertilizing at a reduced rate. Most common houseplants slow down in the winter, so you can hold off fertilizing completely until early spring when you notice growth picking up again. In extreme cases, fertilizing in winter can turn soil salty and burn roots however, most often it is just a waste – the expensive fertilizer will end up flowing right through the soil.
The right steps
Canadian winters are hard on us all, but when we take the right steps to take care of our houseplants, they will in turn look after us.
