A new reality is dawning upon us in these days of the pandemic-induced lockdown. There is a new normal now, where staying apart is the only way we can be whole again. Social distancing remains the name of the game, and the only way – the fastest way – we can emerge from this situation is by adhering to those tenets. Edmonton’s homebuilders are contributing to flattening the curve and avoiding the spread of the viral contagion by offering virtual alternatives to viewing show homes. Many homebuilder websites are equipped with 3D virtual walk-through technology that allows us to experience the show home without setting foot in them. Which is for the best for the time being. Although this may be the only way to experience new show homes at the moment, it’s another example of how an industry can quickly adapt to meet our new needs. Doing just that is our cover feature, Ridgecrest at Glennriding Ravine by Rohit Land Developments. Their website is a portal to all the seven show homes now available in this new southwest community. Below are some helpful updates from Edmonton and area’s builders that are adapting to a new way of showing us their beautiful homes. Bedrock Homes’ new website has the ability to schedule private one-on-one showhome tours and video FaceTime calls. Extra precautions are also being taken within showhomes by sanitizing door handles, desks and washrooms, as well as asking clients to hand sanitize or wash their hands before they tour a showhome. In addition to ensuring enhanced cleaning protocols, they are also holding phone meetings, and FaceTime tours (or whatever platform is needed). EXCITEMENT GROWS FOR RIDGECREST AT GLENRIDDING RAVINE There’s a new energy coursing through southwest Edmonton these days, and the new community of Ridgecrest at Glenridding Ravine is adding to this with its best-of-bothworlds location and new home opportunities that span the market. Rohit Land Development is responsible for much of this newfound vitality, and it cannot contain its excitement in introducing their newest development just off Rabbit Hill Road and 170th St. S.W. THIS SPRING BRING HOUSE CLEANING TO THE FORE by PEPPER RODRIGUEZ Seems like the Covid-19 lockdown may have some silver lining after all. We can flatten the curve and clean the home at the same time! We now have time on our hands to do a more thorough job for spring cleaning. The yearly routine we do to de-clutter and reorganize the home has a new – maybe even life-saving - purpose. Having clean, disinfected surroundings is all that more important now. But beyond the essentials, here are a few other ways that we can achieve Zen through spring cleaning. We spoke to Christina Loc, a home design expert and owner of Metro Elements design studio for this feature. “A clear, clean home does help reduce stress and welcome positive energy,” she says. 28 New Home + Condo Guide |

The first step is to make a list of projects to stay focused. “Taking things incrementally will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed.” With list in hand, be sure to have a bucket of cleaning supplies. For a greener method of cleaning, make your own all-purpose cleaner with one cup of water and one cup of vinegar inside a spray bottle. Add a few drops of essential oil like lemon, orange or lavender for a nice scent. “Castile soap is another great product to have in your cleaning bucket, along with a few other items including microfiber clothes and paper towels.” At the top of that list to clean are those storage spaces like the freezer, pantry, linen closet, other closets, drawers and under-thesink cabinets. “Just because these

storage spaces may be enclosed, these spaces should still be just as aesthetically pleasing as the rest of your home,” Christina says. To help you get your storage spaces organized, start by taking everything out. “Go through every item and decide whether to keep, recycle, donate or discard. Give the shelves a good wipe before placing the items you keep back in. Categorize by type, colour and/ or size. Throw out expired items in your pantry, freezer and medicine cabinet,” Christina says. With smaller items or items that don’t sit so well, especially on typical builder’s grade wire shelving, invest in some storage containers, she adds. “Purchasing containers should be done after you’ve categorized everything as

this will determine what size and shape you will need.” Christina says she loves Mason glass jars as they come in a variety of sizes, are see-through, inexpensive, can easily be found at Canadian Tire or Superstore, and free of the controversial health concerns associated with plastic. “They are great for the pantry as they are airtight and you can transfer everything that came in shapeless plastic bags in to them.” Baskets and storage bins are another must have. Use baskets in closets to store t-shirts, socks, undergarments, scarves and toys. Store away winter clothes in storage bins. Categorize your clothes by type of garment, and then by colour to create a functional method of retrieving your items while making it pleasing to the eyes. Under the bathroom sink, use different baskets to organize bath and body products, she advices. In the pantry, use baskets to store snacks and bulk foods. Keep all of your baking decorations together in a bin. Opaque bins are handy for a quick glance. Labels are also convenient. Whether you use a labeler machine or go to the dollar store for hand written tags, they both do a great job. Have fun with labels. Get creative with descriptions and find pretty ribbon to hang your tags that compliment your newly polished storage space. For items that expire, put a purchase date on the label. Once you have decluttered and organized your belongings, the scrubbing and dusting begins. Popular projects and items often overlooked include: Ŕ dusting light fixtures, the top of windows and fridge Ŕ sweeping under the fridge and stove

maintain this feel throughout the year, create small and automatic habits that will save you time in the end. “My mother always says, ‘Christina, if you just spend that extra 30 seconds hanging up your coat or putting your cereal bowl directly in to the dishwasher, things will not accumulate...’ Mothers always right!” Cleaning your space from top to bottom and decluttering will give you an extra spring in your step, but establishing a cleaning pattern throughout the year makes it less of a chore.

JAYMAN BUILT CHARITY TO BENEFIT ALBERTA’S HOMELESS by PEPPER RODRIGUEZ Alberta-based company Jayman BUILT (Jayman) has launched an initiative to celebrate their 40th year in business with a goal of raising $2 million to support the communities they serve, including charities helping the homeless in Edmonton. Through Jayman, in partnership with the Westman Charitable Foundation, four Alberta organizations, including Homeward Trust Edmonton, will benefit from a fundraising campaign supporting ending homelessness in our Province. Jayman BUILT will be donating $1,000 for each home it sells this year to raise funds. “With our milestone anniversary, it is important to remember where we started and how we got here by giving back to the communities we live and work in,” says Jay Westman, Chairman and CEO, Jayman BUILT. “We are aiming to raise a formidable amount to support Alberta-based charities and are confident we will reach our goal.” Homeward Trust Edmonton says nearly 2,000 Edmontonians today are experiencing homelessness and thousands more at risk. The Edmonton-based non-profit is one of the beneficiaries of the Jayman initiative, which also include the MS Society Research, the Hotchkiss Brain Trust Institute, and Calgary’s Homespace Society. “Our responsibility in the home building industry is to ensure we are not only providing housing for those who want, but also those who need, which is why we 36

Homeward Trust Edmonton will target the funds towards housing initiatives for Edmontonians currently experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness. “Edmonton has made great strides in reducing homelessness through Housing First programs, however we are still in desperate

need of Permanent Supportive Housing and Affordable Housing options for our city’s most vulnerable,” says Susan McGee, CEO of Homeward Trust. “This commitment from Jayman is so timely as it will be directed towards increasing the number of appropriate units for those in need of housing.” Edmonton has housed over 10,000 people since 2008 through Housing First programs. Edmonton’s By- Name List currently stands at just over 1,700 people experiencing homelessness, with the goal being to reach functional zero homelessness in the next year.
