This means that places like Victoria and Gastown, that are normally jammed with foreign tourists off of cruise ships, are suddenly accessible. Our provincial parks are still busy, but there’s a lot more room for locals than normal. It’s also a great time to hop on a bike, or into the car, or onto a SkyTrain and explore new neighbourhoods. to-own programs effectively solve one of the biggest impediments to homeownership for many middle-income families who are faced with the daunting challenge of having to balance between extraordinarily high cost of living and saving up to buy a property.”. Concord Pacific hosts cooking class with Vikram Vij at ARC SkyLounge In a special online event for Indian Summer Festival, Vikram Vij gave a masterclass in Indian cuisine at the ARC SkyLounge amenity space downtown Vancouver, creating a seasonal plant-based meal together with guests in real time. The Leo Award-winning actor Agam Darshi played host, drawing out Vikram’s life story, and the deeper things that a cuisine
signifies – culture, gathering, affection, and relationships. The menu featured three seasonal plant-based dishes: Sprouted Lentil, Bell Pepper and Carrot Salad, Zucchini, Squash & Potato Sauté, and Spicy Rice Pilaf with Local Vegetables. The event was part interview and part cooking class, followed by a dinner party for those purchasing the special package option.
design and post-Covid-19 considerations
This two-part webinar series explored re-designing and re-imagining developments and housing projects in the post-COVID world. The expert panel, consisting of Virendra Kallianpur, an Associate Principal at Perkins + Will; Marin Rahn, of Bosa Properties; and Nicholas Desert, of MCM Interiors; gave their insights about what can be introduced in the short-term to facilitate COVID-19 regulations. The panel shared their insights on how are shared spaces going to be re-imagined, adapting building design, increasing functionality while maintaining the same unit size, and increasing livability in current building designs. Other topics included hygiene and sanitation: how to design or modify surfaces in a cost-effective way, that are durable enough to withstand frequent cleaning procedures. The lively discussion was moderated by UDI President and CEO Anne McMullin.

They wrapped up the evening with the Grand Georgie Award for Residential Renovator of the Year. Graeme Huguet, My House Design/Build’s owner, was understandably happy with the event. “I think it went over really well”, he said. “Our awards were very diverse, which means that everyone in the company was
involved in some way, and our clients were really thrilled.” One of their most interesting wins was the Best Certified Whole House Renovation, which actually went to their eco-conscious renovation of a condominium, build before Expo ’86. “It was a two-and-a-half year project, and the whole first year was planning and getting the permits,” he explains. The project also won for Best Condo Renovation over $250,000, and is emblematic of the quality of work My House Design/Build is known for. “Renovations used to be mostly aesthetic,” he says, “ But now we do more holistic renos. We focus on creating a more functional,

DIRTY APRON CHEF DAVID ROBERTSON ON THE PERFECT CONDO KITCHEN by STEPHANIE MACDONALD
Though Carrie Bradshaw famously used her oven as extra clothes storage on “Sex and the City,” most people think a fancy, functional kitchen is the most sexy thing about a new condo. High on the list of those people is Dirty Apron Cooking School and Delicatessen co-founder, chef and cookbook author David Robertson. You may be familiar with the charming and jovial Chef Robertson from his frequent appearances on Global News, CTV, CBC and other local stations, whipping up delicacies from Sake Miso Sablefish to Westcoast Panzanella Salad in promotion of his two excellent cookbooks, The Dirty Apron Cookbook and his latest, Gather. Now he can add “kitchen design consultant” to his list of talents, as he has teamed up with Vertex Developments
on their new project called The Hillcrest by Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver. “I got to know the team at Vertex through some charitable events we did together,” says Chef Robertson, “And this seemed like a good collaboration. It’s more of a professional-style kitchen, with good flow, lots of workspace and open, clean lines. I think the kitchen is at least as important as the master bedroom.” The kitchens feature Bosch appliances, and thoughtful details like under-counter microwaves and silent dishwashers. “Teaming up with David Robertson to design The Hillcrest Kitchen has been a game-changer for us,” said Vertex Developments Principal, Graham Carter. “David scrutinized and approved each element of the professionally-
curated and considered kitchen, making the heart of our homes ideal whether you’re a foodie or a beginner home cook.” Each buyer will also receive a free class at David Robertson’s Dirty Apron Cooking School, as well as a Dirty Apron gift box including a signed copy of David’s new cookbook Gather. The package will help residents make the most of their exceptional kitchen. “The Hillcrest also has a communal herb garden in the courtyard, which shows that Vertex has a real commitment to both the community of families who live there, and also to the culinary inspiration we put into the kitchens,” says Chef Robertson. With recent global events, people have been spending more time in the kitchen than ever, and in times like these, maybe even the Carrie Bradshaws of the world will see that ovens are for more than designer sweaters. Chef Robertson is determined to make that happen, and through his smart kitchen design, fun cooking classes, and inspiring books, he is well on his way.

Summer’s here and it’s not just the temperature that’s rising in the Fraser Valley. Real estate sales are skyrocketing as people discover the many benefits this area offers as a place to call home. This issue, Gord MacPherson, president of Elevate Development, discusses some of the reasons he’s bullish about living east of Vancouver.
Plus, it’s much easier to find a desirable work/ life balance. You’re close to fishing, skiing, hiking, and canoeing. There are lakes on both sides — something most people don’t know. impacted, certainly, but average townhouses, condos, and houses are still selling — and selling well. In fact, the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board just posted June statistics and the numbers are up significantly over June last year: 3,308 listings and 1,601 sales in June 2020 versus 2,799 listings and 1,304 sales in 2019. Those numbers shocked me and a lot of others as well. NHCG: What’s the Fraser Valley’s appeal? GM: Number one is affordability. Affordability means that’s where the population will move.
Look at somewhere like Mission where we’re building right now. You can buy a beautiful house for about $550,000, a brand new condo with all the bells and whistles for around $300,000. And even though Covid has brought a heightened awareness to the fact telecommuting is possible, if you do work in Vancouver, the West Coast Express takes you right to Waterfront Station without having to consider variables like traffic or weather. So you’re getting a downtown salary, but your mortgage is half that of your co-workers. 30

But it’s also got the amenities people need. People who live here can shop here — and they do. The Langley Staples is one of their busiest stores in the country. A friend of mine owns an insurance agency with 17 offices, and their top producer is also in Langley. Ask someone who lives in Abbotsford when they last went into Vancouver and they’ll most likely look at you like you’re crazy and say: “Why would I want to go there when I’ve got everything I need right here?”

When I decided to tackle my backyard, I felt overwhelmed. There was so much to do! Can you relate? After much deliberation, I chose to put in a new concrete patio, creating a clean slate for the backyard. This really was the jumping-off point for the entire design. It was my vision to have three different zones (dining, lounging and food prep), and concrete served as a great way to separate the spaces. Once I had decided on the dimensions of the new concrete areas, I needed to measure the spaces for furniture. I had fallen in love with an 8-ft. reclaimed teak table, but it was too big for my side yard. That didn’t stop me! Last minute, I decided to increase the area of the concrete patio to accommodate the table. I just couldn’t live without it. When choosing the sectional for the lounge area, I knew I needed something that would be durable and weather-proof but comfortable as well. The South Beach three-piece aluminum outdoor sectional seating set from
Home Depot was a perfect choice. It has an aluminum frame, so it’s lightweight and rustproof, and is completely covered in Sunbrella fabric so it’s UV resistant and weatherproof, too. Once the furniture was in place, it was time to accessorize. This is the most important step if you want your outdoor living space to feel like an extension of your indoors. My biggest tip? Use lots of pillows and tons of throw blankets (check out bouclair.com for a great selection). This not only looks cosy and comfortable but makes for an extremely inviting area. Anyone can put patio furniture in their backyard, but accessories can help completely personalize the space. For lighting, I used stringed lights and low-lying lanterns to create an intimate outdoor feel (cost effective as well). Plus, they look pretty. And last but not least, incorporating splashes of colour
here and there (I chose a sapphire blue Weber barbecue and lots of greenery) can bring a backyard to life. I’m thrilled with my backyard retreat, and I hope it can inspire your own makeover. Everything Is Going To Be Alright. For years, the neon sign atop the rennie and associates head office has been a much-loved icon in Vancouver’s Chinatown. The six words epitomize Bob Rennie’s outlook on life — through good times and bad. And when the Condo King addressed members of the Urban Development Institute (UDI) via Zoom, even the realities of Covid-19 couldn’t destroy his fundamental sense of optimism. Sales, he predicted, will continue to ramp up. The 11,000 Amazon employees scheduled to be transfered from Seattle to Vancouver, will still arrive, most of them working primarily from home. And a two-tower residential project in Surrey is anticipated to launch, as planned, in mid-September. In fact, Surrey is one of two hot spots Rennie has his eye on, the second is Squamish. He cited Surrey’s existing and upcoming transit, heavy investment in educational infrastructure, and the decision to locate a stateof-the-art City Hall in the Surrey City Centre neighbourhood as the main reasons the municipality is becoming the region’s second downtown. In Squamish, it’s access to the instant, outdoor lifestyle those 11,000 Amazon employees are looking for. “I think one of the perks at Amazon USA will soon be telling an employee ‘we’ll transfer you to Vancouver.’ This is a very special place on the planet — and I believe the world agrees.” 40

Overall, Rennie anticipates post pandemic, society will enjoy life more conservatively. “We’ll spend more on the activities we like, but do fewer things. We’ll own few cars, but drive what we want.” Not such a bad idea. Well known for his outsidethe-box problem solving techniques, Rennie also proposed one solution to the notoriously lengthy building approval process, a process he quipped can sometimes take longer than the actual construction. It’s a simple concept if perhaps controversial: get federal and
provincial governments to create incentives for cities who reduce bureaucratic red tape. How? Instigate quotas, then give municipalities $10,000 per door for every rental created, $15,000 per door of every social housing unit, and $7,500 per door for market condos under $1 million in Vancouver and under $750,000 east of Boundary Road. But there’s a condition: unless the time from application to entitlements approval (that establishes what can be built on a specific site) is under 12 months, the city will not only receive nothing, they will have some other funding reduced. Addressing design, Rennie cautioned against incorporating often expensive Covid-centric features that won’t be needed later — features like two extra elevators that become redundant once capacity is no longer restricted to two people. He also came out strongly against facial recognition systems that eliminate touching elevator doors and panels. “The privacy issues are huge. But for sure we will be using our iPhones and tablets to open, access, and run those elevators.” In closing, Rennie offered a personal reflection. “History is going to be extremely kind to Bonnie Henry. History will not be kind to Mr. Trump. But we are all going to come out of this. And even though we can’t hug or shake hands, let people know you’d like to, because the most valuable currency we have is still our relationships. Keep those relationships strong.”
